Semaphore Timeout has Expired

Q: Semaphore Timeout has Expired

Good Morning All,

I am having issues installing Windows updates, they have been failing upon install for the past 3-4 months.  I get the error code 80070079, "The Semaphore timeout has expired".  So I tried backing up my data to just wipe it and reload the OS, the backup fails as well, same error message.  Then I tried moving files manually to an external drive and that as well timeouts on the larger files.  I have searched the Internet and it many people seem to have this issue and it relates to the network adapter, but I am not trying to do anything over the network (Updates are already downloaded just waiting to install), so I feel it is something else.  Does anyone know of a fix or possible solution?  I searched semaphore through the registry and there are a lot of entries, but not sure if i need to change any of them or not?

Any insight would be greatly appreciated.

Machine is a Dell Optiplex 780, Windows 7 32-Bit, 4GB Ram, 800GB HDD, Broadcomm Network Adapter.

Thanks,
Brent

Preferred Solution: Semaphore Timeout has Expired

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I would boot to a linux cd or usb stick, and copy your files that way.

Check the health of the hard drive maybe, with hdtune or gsmartcontrol

He puts in his SD card and trys to acsess the drive D: since that is the slot for the sd card
Then the window locks up for a few min then he gets a pop up message saying:
"The semaphore timeout period has expired."
He has already tried other camera cards with no change.
Any ideas?

When deleting a file from a local drive, that I have permissions to the local folder on, I'm getting the Semaphore timeout period has expired error.

I've tried to make it as simple as possible for the system, after doing a clean boot, and it still failing, I'm currently in safe mode, without networking, and am still seeing the error.  Anybody have a suggestion or work around?  Files in other
folders are not having this issue.

hello again...

dang this thing is a pain!!

new issue today, trying to save a tiny .rtf file to external USB drive, and get "semaphore timeout period has expired" message and have to save to local drive instead. also get the message if i drag and drop into the desired location.

perhaps related to the issue i occasionally have: the machine loses connection to the external drive and either the folder shows empty (it's not!) or doesn't show as even being connected. little blue light on the drive will sometimes go out, sometimes not, but still no access...

EDIT: i have two verbatim USB drive attached... one or the other of them will occasional disappear from This PC and when i look at device manager there is an error on that drive. i disconnect and reconnect and the drives show up and the error in device manger goes away... there doesn't seem to be any rhyme or reason as to why this happens. when it does and i try to save something to the drive, that's when i get the "semaphore timeout period has expired"

i have tried to update drivers using windows search online and it always says i have the best drivers loaded....

the drives have been checked for errors and windows reports none... there is still quite a bit of available space on them (80+ gigs on each) and when they are connected and live, i can access files with no problem... it just decides to seemingly drop the drive randomly...

thanks for any help...

I maintain some software that makes a tcp socket connection to a different piece of software and sends data back and forth (pretty basic stuff there). We use boost asio to handle reading and writing of data over the socket connection. We have a client that
has deployed this software on Windows7. The client has been having issues with our software not being able to maintain a reliable socket connection. One thing I have noticed is that quite often the networking callback are receiving the error: The semaphore
timeout period has expired.

This error is not coming from anywhere in our code (or the boost code). I've done some research on it and I found a Microsoft Knowledge base article on this error for Windows XP (support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/325487). I've seen a few people ask questions about
this error on Windows7, but they're all in regards to moving files to different drives, nothing regarding network connections.

What does this error mean in regards to Windows7? Does the knowledge base article I mentioned still apply to Windows7?

Hello Ady,

Thanks for your post!

This issue may be a little complex and require some steps to troubleshoot:

1.    Update the driver of wireless network adapters in both of your computers.
2.    Temporarily disable all the firewalls and anti-virus applications, then check the issue again.
3.    To exclude the factors from other services and applications, do a clean boot to check the issue and perform Step 4.(KB929135) How to troubleshoot a problem by performing a clean boot in Windows Vistahttp://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;929135
4.    With clean boot, try to apply the hotfixes contained in the following KB articles:(KB932045) Error message when you use a network connection to copy a large file from one Windows Vista-based computer to another Windows Vista-based computer: "The connection has been lost"
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;932045(KB932063) Several problems occur on a Windows Vista-based computer when you work in a wireless network environment
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;932063
If problem still persists after steps above, this issue is very possibly due to network devices or configurations, please let me know:

1.    Whether this problem occurs in wired network?
2.    If strengthening the network signals, the problem can be changed?
3.    What size of files will lead to this error.
4.    Does this error terminate the copy process?

Greetings,

My environment is: Win'7, Visual Studio 2010, C#

There is another message on these forums with almost exactly the same title. It's closed, so I couldn't post there.

I'm getting that exact same response from Win'7 in a try /catch scheme.

i.e., "...The semaphore timeout period has expired..."

I am quite confident that the serial port is really there, as he will open and will transfer data from time to time.

It's the whims of the hardware that have me so confused.

The exact same code worked perfectly last night. In fact, it has worked for weeks.

The statement which I believe is causing the error is...
TheUsersChosenSerialPort.Open();

Much like the other thread mentioned, the port is a BlueTooth connector, and Win'7 is reporting him okay, and so on.

I welcome responses from those with useful knowledge on this topic.

Wired or WIFI?

Are you using an Internet Security Suite or ZoneAlarm?
This may also be thr problem....
This can happen when the total path length of the source file
and the total path length of the destination file are greater than a given
value, 128 I believe. When this occures in windows, it results in a Path

Hi, I use Windows XP Pro and I am getting this error message in the system event log everytime I log in. Now I only get one, but just recently there are like 3 or 4 in a row many times during the initial log in to the internet network.

I have tried to search everywhere and google and yahoo for an answer but never was able to get a clear solution.

Luckily, I am able to get online just fine but the idea of this showing up constantly bothers me. It was fine, for about 4 months it stopped showing up after I did no changes to my system but its now back.

Also for a while I was getting something about user cancelled something but I have not seen that in a long time.

I tried to unplug the modem and cables to reset the IP , but that doesnt help. Also not that my service uses a Dynamic IP and I cant switch to static IP.

I have x1 Desktop and x1 Laptop.
They are both on Win XP Pro and are fully updated.
I have always networked them using Cat5 cables and an active hub and had a shared Internet connection on the Desktop and had no massive problems.

one day recently I plugged in the Laptop and turned it on. Not only could I not connect to the net but neither PC could access the other.

I have run the Network setup wizard on the Desktop and then on the Laptop and managed to mess with things so the ICS is now working again. But neither PC can see the other.

I get the error message:

\\Desktop is not accessible. (sometimes this part says: 'MSHome is not accessible')

You might not have permission to use this network resource. Contact the administrator of this server to find out if you have access permissions.

The network path was not found. (sometimes this part says: 'the semaphore timeout period has expired' or 'The list of servers for this workgroup is not currently available')

There is only one user on each PC, ME.

I have opened command prompt and ran ipconfig and then ran 'ping'. Both PC's can ping each other with no problems but I can still not access files on each PC. I HAVE shared folders on both and they should be seen.

So I did a search and found nothing definitive regarding this particular error in my application.

I have a Dell laptop with an i7 processor, an SSD drive and 8g of ram, running Win7 Pro 64 bit.

I put a 128G micro sd card into the sd card adapter and slapped into the slot. When I try to move files to the card, I get the error.

I formatted the card just for grins. It won't format NTFS, but it did format exFat @ default allocation unit size.

The only file that didn't copy was one that's 21 megs in size. Everything else was smaller and copied over fine.

Donno what to do from here. Any help would be appreciated.

Hello :
I am very new to ODBC connectivity, but i know sql fairly well:

What can generate a Native State Error: Native State S1T00: timeout expired on a SQL 2000 database; NT4 OS Server??

I am running sql database dependent applications on this server: 3 to be exact.

e.g. I have an application which transports data that was entered to the SQL database located on this Server via a LAN user. This application then dynamically takes this data and transports it to another device located on the same sub-net as the Server for data recognition and other functionalities. This is performed in milliseconds hence it may be utilizing the (winmm.dll) file to accomplish this. But the error message:

"Warning State: S1T00,Native:0, Origin: [Microsoft][ODBC
SQL Server Driver] timeout expired"

causes this process to fail along with other ODBC and SQL dependent applictions.

Can someone please help/ inform me what can cause this and how to prevent this??

Can a modem dial-in access cause this?? though it was running fine with modem access in the past, and no change in its configs.??

Thank you in advance

A:ODBC Native State S1T00: timeout expired

ODBC connections do have a set timout I believe and ODBC connections from your connection string in the web page can also expire if the returned data doesn't get back to the browser in time. IIS also has a set timeout for scripts of 60 seconds I believe and can also cause errors. There are 3 likely places these errors are being generated from but I would suspect the connection string on your web page first and then IIS's timout for scripts....if you are using ASP and IIS

What the heck is error 0x80070079 " Semaphore time out period has expired" ?
This happens to me when I try to send large files to my Buffalo network attached storage device. The other three PC's on my network do not have this issue ruling out the network and the NAS device. Also, sometimes after getting the above error Windows Explores stops working and restarts. My wireless network card also looses its connection to the wireless router when getting the above error. The other three computers on the network never loose connection with the router also ruling out the router.
Any suggestions?

hi all,
as ucan see this s my 1st post in this fantastic help forum..

well, ive a weired prob., its all about strange ping replies we got from any
client within our small switched network, we're currenly ve a 1Mb ADSL,
clients linked with 3 dlink switches and one Thomson 500 adsl router..
pinging to any domain would result in this very weired behaviour..
btw: we didnt expirienced this b4 imean this's a new thing we're facing,
and sometimes the replies come so normal..

any clues?? can it be the dsl provider itself??

A:wiered pings! 300ms..timeout..300ms..timeout!!

Somewhere between you and 216.109.112.135 about 1 packet in 6 is being lost or delayed beyond ping's threshold. Maybe the destination site is busy, maybe your ISP is busy, maybe general network congestion. Not desirable, but not so weired either.

Hello i am new here. My problem is, everytime i right click on a file some error box appears, saying :

"You temporary key has expired. If you believe this message is in error, please contact the programs author." i can either click cancel or click Ok. Theres nothing on the message about what program it belongs to and i dont know which program couses this.

When i click Ok, another box appears asking me a username and a serial key, with buttons ok, cancel, and Buy Now! Accessing my right click menu is only avalible by clicking cancel anyway... When i click Buy Now button it takes me to www.backup2001.com. But i have never downloaded anything from here or any backup programs for the matter. I searched my hard disk and registiry files the words "backup2001" and "sedo" (the company name) but no result. I have deleted like 90% of the programs on my computer (including winrar, thought it might couse the problem) i deleted everything suspicous with RegCleaner program and i did virus scans with 3 diffrent programs (panda, avg and norton) and had run scans with spyware programs, but its still there.

i copy pasted the error on google. It seems that other people recieve the exact message with more than one program, but they all know which program it belongs to and it doesnt happen to them on every file. When i right click My Copmuter the error wont show but any other regular file it ha... Read more

Q: EXPIRED

????????? ????? ?? ??? ??????  ?????? ???????? ?? ???? ????  My computer out the warranty expired What is the solution Thanks

A:EXPIRED

Done is done. If it is expired, the warranty period is over. The free factory warranty is for a period of one year. Does that match the purchase date information? If it is incorrect, you can dispute that with an online form. Use the following link.http://support.hp.com/us-en/document/c05084516

Greetings. My brother-in-law has a computer that he only uses for games. Never connects to the internet but it has windows XP for the O/S. He now gets a pop-up that says windows XP has expired and nothing further. Can't play the games anymore. What happened.?

A:XP Expired??

Please give more precise details of the sequence here, is this when Windows starts or from the desktop when he tries to play games? If it's the Windows XP End of Support alert popup, checking "Don't show this message again" and OK will prevent it from appearing, and operation will continue as normal, but it doesn't sound like that's the issue.

If it is a suite of games that are refusing to run, but other functions in the OS still work, then it's possible the games were programmed with a hard limit date so they could not be used on XP after the support cutoff date.

I just got a new laptop and its been working fine except when i go on the internet and i press the back button i usually get a message saying this webpage has expired. This never used to happen. Please help.

A:Expired webpages

If the same webpage also tells you to reload the webpage, the problem isn't your computer, but instructions from the webpage (prevents the man-in-the-middle attack). You will almost always get this on secure websites. However, if you are getting it from sites like Google, you have another problem involving the security settings in your browser.

I work for a construction subcontractor. We have our main office and we have a job site office. At the job site, we use the general contractors network as a guest to be able to get to the internet and to remote into our own HQ. Lately when I go to the internet from the job site I get a message that the SSL Certificate has expired. It makes no difference if I go to my company website, google or any other website I still get the same notice. All of my Certificates are current and up to date. What is causing this? And how do I fix it?

I am a rookie when it comes to the SSL Certificates.

Thank you in advance.

A:SSL Certificate Expired?

Make sure the time and date on your computer is correct. Otherwise, I have no ideas on this issue.

A:NAV expired...looking for better option

I got rid of NAV 2003 using only Add/Remove and a Registry cleaner (RegSupreme), but some people seem to have more difficulty.

Symantec provide removal tools and the one you need depends on the version you have. This is for 2003 and earlier; http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/nav.nsf/docid/2001092114452606 and this is for 2004 and later versions; http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPOR...sf&view=docid&dtype=&prod=&ver=&osv=&osv_lvl=
(although I see it refers to 2003 as well as the later versions?)

Better options would include AVG and Avast if you are happy with free programs or NOD32 or Kapersky if you are happy to pay. Have a look here; http://www.av-comparatives.org/ Click on 'Comparatives' and have a look at the February and May online results.

I was never given the option to upgrade to 8.1 official from the preview. Now the preview has just told me it expired and will reboot itself every couple hours. I'm in the middle of a huge project right now. Does anyone have any ideas? I was actually planning to buy a new computer in the next week or so but I was hoping to gradually move things over to it.

I have a 2 yr old DELL Inspiron 530s with XP and McAfee which I JUST found out expired 12/31/09.

The PC has been progressively slowing down and since a week or two before Christmas it would freeze about 5-15 minutes after start up and have to be turned off by pressing & holding down the power buttton. The mouse still moved but all of the programs would freeze. A few days ago shortly after the computer froze and we were still typing the tower started making a loud long BEEEEP until we shut it down by holding the button.

I tried a restore to a point before it started freezing. No luck

I tried running McAfee but it would lock up during the scan ...

All along I would get messages that the PC was not protected and clicking the "FIX" button didn't work ... I even uninstalled and reinstalled McAfee because it told me to.

I ran the PC in safe mode, nothing

I decided to download a free version of AVG. If forced me to uninstall McAfee ... McAfee forced a restart ... after the PC restarted I re-down-loaded the AVG trial version and ran their full virus scan. It took almost an hour. But the system did not freeze even once. The scan produced no threats!

The PC seems fine now but I am afraid to reload the McAfee.

Does anyone know if it is McAfee causing the sluggish response time and freezing? How do I fix this? I am assuming that the free trial of AVG is not going to last so I am going to need virus protection soon.

Is it because McAfee nee... Read more

Hi and welcome to the forum

There is a free AVG, not a trial, available here:

http://download.cnet.com/AVG-Anti-Vi...dlPid=11014801

There is more info here on free A/V, firewalls, etc, here:

Remember that you can not have more than one Anti Virus or one firewall installed.

I purchased a W7 professional upgrade DVD from MS. Did a clean install and activated it. Windows activation shows that my version is activated.
I wanted to start a support call on the MS support web-site. One step is to provide my Windows PID what I did, but I got a message that my PID has expired.
How can that be but still show activated?
With the W7 updates I had also installed the "check for genuine version", ran it and got a confirmation that i have a genuine W7 version.
So what do I need to do to have an valid PID?

A:Windows PID has expired

Call MS tech support and they will sort it out for you. You could be typing in an incorrect character, or there is a flaw in the system.

When you speak with MS, if asked tell them you had the old qualifying XP or Vista (you have one, right?) on the HD at the time you clean installed with Upgrade version or they may send you back to do it over again. (Been happenin lately, for some reason - which is ironic since they were giving out the registry workaround in Oct.)

I'm using the RSS feed to populate a box on my main site with news articles. This works for the most part, with one glaring exception. If I set an article to expire, the headline remains visible in the feed, but when you click the link to read more, it brings you to a completely blank page. This obviously will make people think my site is broken, and they feel obligated to let me know. Frequently.

So, is there a fix, other than manually removing "dead" news articles completely, to get the RSS feed to show only active, non-expired articles? Failing that, is there a way to force a "no article by that name" view in the main window or something? A totally blank page simply makes me look bad

I too have tried to rid my screen of the pop up security alert. Read the previous advice posted, went in and unchecked the boxes I thought were appropriate. Was looking at the posting by Kcsuz on 9-3-07. says it was not resolved by checking the boxes in internet options. It is the LLMetricsWrapper.exe. HELP. Its making me crazy. WHAT CAN I DO TO BE RID OF IT/ AND WHO IS CAUSING THIS PROBLEM?
