T450s Product Recovery Failed

Q: T450s Product Recovery Failed

Recently I decided to upgrade the internal hard drive of myThinkPad T450s to a Crucial MX300 275GB SSD. I wanted to start afresh with the SSD, so I decided to re-install the operating system with the Windows Recovery Media I have downloaded from Lenovo's Support website (https://pcsupport.lenovo.com/us/en/lenovorecovery).When trying to create a bootable USB drive with the USB Recovery Creator tool, the program copies the files successfully, but says failed validation after reaching 100% validation.I tried to install the OS on the SSD anyway. On booting up the recovery program, after allowing it to format all drives, the program stops saying "Product Recovery Failed".I'm not sure as to whether it is the SSD or the failed validation that is causing the problem. The digital media was untouched, I kept the files exactly the way I received it. And I have restored the system before with the exact same RMF as before, and it completed the process successfully. Then I've decided to restore the recovery media to the original HDD the product came with, and that fails too. I don't know why that is happening. That means the SSD is definitely not the problem.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Last week, I purchased a new Lenovo X260 (Type 20F6-006AUS). Packaging said it came with Windows 10, but when I fired it up it booted into Windows 7. After searching for the Windows 10 media or files, finally succumbed and contacted Lenovo support. The agent said the Windows 10 files are available by request and come on separate media, so I made the request.  This afternoon, a thumb drive with the Windows 10 Product Recovery arrived.  (Rhetorical: Can it really be Product Recovery if the laptop was represented as having Windows 10 installed, but was not actually installed?) I followed the instructions. Now when it boots to the thumb drive, I click past the Acceptance of Terms and conditions, acknowledge it'll wipe out all my personal data and watch the recovery start. About 1 minute in, I get a pop-up with the window banner "Product Recovery" and the message "Recovery failed." The recovery process must have gotten far enough that it wiped out the boot sector on the SSD, because I can neither boot to the original factory SSD or to the Product Recovery USB they shipped. I've searched around and found no solutions for this specific problem. Some have speculated it may be because they didn't have factory installed HDD, but I've swapped nothing out from how it came shrink-wrapped. Any suggestions?

It sounds to me like your rescue and recovery partition may be corrupted. My recommendations is to get the rescue and recovery CD's from Lenovo. I had to purchase some for an old T40 and it cost me like $45, but after you have them you can have piece of mind that you can replace the hard drive and still restore back to Factory settings. After you get the recovery CD's I would recommend reinstalling rescue and recovery.

I am trying to format my laptop back to how it came from the factory (I got a nasty virus), but the boot manager wont run the cbd_drive that I made some months ago to do system restore...  and when I try to do the Full Product Recovery, after selecting "I agree to these terms and conditions" and clicking "Next" I get a window that says "Recovery Failed" What do I do?

A:Product Recovery Failed...? (Windows 7)

Hi, Nimvoker
Exactly which method are you using to attempt to recover your system? Also, I am unfamiliar with the term "cbd_drive." Could you possibly explain what you mean by this?
Thanks in advance,

Hello, after replacing a damaged hard drive with a new one I could not locate the product key information.  I told the owner of the laptop to purchase the recovery disk from HP which she did. When I tried to install with the new recovery disk I received a message stating "recovery failed" when installing the recovery software to the hard drive. How can I retrieve the product ID key for this laptop also the recovery disk that she purchased did not work is there an update to this issue any help will be greatly appreciated thank you so much. The laptop is HP Pavilion X 360 with originally Windows 8.1 installed.

A:Recovery Failed issue and Lost Product Key

Hello, Welcome to the HP Support forum. Please, refer to these official articles about troubleshooting recovery process failures: > http://support.hp.com/us-en/document/c04942983  (Win 10)> http://support.hp.com/us-en/document/c03483233  (Win 8) Read them both and follow the advice based on the specific error the user of the PC received. PCs with Windows 8 , 8.1 and 10 do not ship with product key available for the users. It does not have COE sticker like Windows XP, Vista or 7 used to have > http://www.cnet.com/news/windows-8-moves-to-bios-based-product-keys/What you ask for is officially not supported. For the recovery discs to work:- ensure the new HDD is working and correctly installed- no other major hardware changes have been performed- new HDD must with the very same size (or bigger in size) as the original HDD - smaller HDD or SSD (smaller in capacity) will not work- check with HP or the vendor you received the media from if they sent you the correct version of the discs/media for the correct PC model.

HELP! So we recently purchased an X240 for a user and it's been nothing but issues. Shortly have installing the applications he needed, the machine has been having this weird problem of unresponsiveness for no reason. You'd start up Excel and then shortly after that the machine just "pauses" for many seconds before the mouse moves again. Anyway, after trying to figure out the cause I gave up and decided to restore the machine to its factory settings. Problem is, pressing F11 and booting into recovery the process stops about 1/8th of the way and says "Recovery failed." Does anyone know what this means exactly under all of this GUI interface? There's no details as to what or where it failed. I've even created a USB recovery disk to restore from, but it bombs out at the same place... I've asked Lenovo to send me recovery disks, but that's going to take time to receive and guess what... it's coming as a DVD when this machine has no DVD drive! HELP!

Hello guys. My ThinkPad 450S was all working fine until I switched it off last night before going to sleep. On wake-up I tried to switch it on and find it not responding. I tried to plug the power adapter only to find it not responding too (normally on plugging the power adapter, the red light on lid's ThinkPad flashes and the green light on the power buttom also flashes). This morning they were all dormant when I plug in the power adapter. Before I switched it off, the batteries were full (100%) as it has two batteries internal and external one. I didn't try to open it or do anything about it, may be this evening. What might be the problem and possible solution to it? Please help me out.  Regards, Cathbert.

I have the T450s 20BX ThinkPad and have had several Short Scan failures on the SSD (SanDisk SSD U110 16GB - 14.91 GBs). I haven't resolved anything because after running the test a few more times, it passed. My latest test failed again and I started researching the issue. I downloaded SanDisk SSD Dashboard to diagnose the problem and it also failed the test, and showed the SSD had no data on it, and that the entire disk was unallocated. Since their is no data on the disk, is it necessary? Do I need to replace the SSD? Any known fixes? What would be most best/most reliable replacement SSD?  Thanks for any thoughts, guidance, advice.

I have had to put a new hard drive in my laptop after the original one failed.
I then reinstalled Vista using the product recovery CD that came with the laptop (not the recovery cds i made as these did not work!)

I tried the key from the bottom of the laptop, but this does not work.

What to i do?

The Windows product key on the bottom side of your notebook is an OEM license key. That means this can?t be used with other Windows versions.

Hey guys, my T450s 's harddrive is starting to give me problems and I am thinking about replacing it. My plan was to [1] backup all data externally, [2] replace the HDD, [3] recover OS and system setting with the recovery disk and [4] reload my externally-backed-up data. However, my concern is that I am not sure where the recovery disk is located, and my worry is that by replacing the HDD, I would have removed the recovery disk too. (In which case I may need something like Acronis to capture an image). Does anyone know if the recovery drive is tied to the HDD? Have a T450S  and the HDD  is corrupted so  I cannot do Fsomething to get a restore and need to therfore get it going afresh , so  - need to get Windows recovery / install ISOs/USB/Discs - HOW? I put my serial number into the Lenovo site that handles this and it said my laptop is not eligible for something , presumably getting it from MS. In the old days, they'd give you the disks, then they wanted to save $ and no disks, but you cd go to MS and get it as long as you give a valid product id. WHen I did this, it said this is a Windows from a premade machine; contact your manufacturer.

A:have a T450S - need to get Windows recovery / install ISOs/USB/Discs - HOW?

If your system came installed with Windows 8.1 or 10, your product ID is stored in the BIOS, so just skip by the part where it asks you to enter the PID and it will complete the install, and activate automatically.   If you have Windows 7, there should be a product key label on the bottom or under the battery. You can download Windows  and create installation media from Microsoft for free at the link belowhttps://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/15088/windows-create-installation-media If you are in the US,  and want to order recovery media to restore the  drive and all its partitions to the factory state, you need to call Lenovo Support at 877-453-6686  and they will send you the media (for a price of course).     Good Luck,

I would greatly appreciate advice on the following.

My Sat Pro M70-220 (PSM75E-00D008G3), laptop has 4 partitions created by Acronis Disk Director Suit v9:

C: OS-Win XP Pro SP3
D: Programs
E: Data& Downloads

After booting the laptop into Win XP, I inserted the Toshiba Product Recovery CD into the DVD-RAM drive
and navigated to BMP folder, R:\G_INST\BMP, where I found the file "menu.bmp" which gives 2 Recovery

Factory pre-installed software will be installed.

*2. Expert Recovery Mode Warning:*

My questions are with respect to using the "Expert Recovery Mode" :
- will I be able to use the "Expert Recovery Mode" of the Recovery CD to reinstall the Win XP Pro (factory pre-installed software) onto my C: partition, whilst not affecting the D, E & F partitions ?
- will I be able to format the C: partition, using the "Expert Recovery Mode", without formatting the other partitions ?
- what is the exact "Expert Recovery Mode" procedure ?
- where can I find further info on the "Expert Recovery Mode" procedure ?

>will I be able to use the "Expert Recovery Mode" of the Recovery CD to reinstall the Win XP Pro (factory pre-installed software) onto my C: partition, whilst not affecting the D, E & F partitions

Yes, this should be possible. Using the Expert Recovery Mode you should get the Ghost window in which you could select the partition where the OS should be installed. In such case only this partition would be formatted.

> will I be able to format the C: partition, using the "Expert Recovery Mode", without formatting the other partitions?

Yes, theoretically this should be possible.

> what is the exact "Expert Recovery Mode" procedure ?
As I mentioned above, this mode allows you to restore the OS on a certain partition and only this partition will be formatted.

My two-year old Satellite C75-A-14X suffered a major hard drive crash a few weeks ago. My data has been backed up, but I've been unable to repair my PC, and as I hadn't created any recovery media, I bought a system recovery USB stick from Toshiba. I received the USB stick today and attempted to restore my laptop to its factory default settings. I left my laptop to perform the recovery for about an hour or so. When I returned, the screen said that there was an error (I didn't make a note of the error code) and the recovery had failed. Now, when I restart my laptop I get a blue screen with the following text:

Your PC needs to be repaired

A required device isn't connected or can't be accessed.

Error code: 0xc000000f

You'll need to use the recovery tools on your installation media. If you don't have any installation media (like a disc or USB device), contact your system administrator or PC manufacturer.

Press Enter to try again
Press F8 for Startup Settings
Press Esc for UEFI Firmware Settings"

When I press Enter or F8, my laptop remains on the blue screen with the above text. Pressing Esc is the only option at this screen that works. How can I re-attempt restoring factory settings from the recovery USB stick?

Hi - I have several older Lenovo ThinkCentre workstations running Windows 7 Professional that I would like to restore and distribute to my employees since we will be moving to Windows 10 workstations and these workstations are in great shape.  I successfully created the Recovery CD's using the Recovery Partition for this particular workstation.  After going through the recovery process using these disks, I got a BSOD and got stuck in a boot loop.  I then ran through the entire process again only to get a 'Recovery Failed', 3 times.  I cannot recreate the recovery media as it now tells me there is file missing.  Am I stuck?  Do you only get one chance to recover a PC? This particular workstation does not have a Windows 7 Product Key sticker on the case so I followed the procedure using this article https://support.lenovo.com/us/en/solutions/ht500032 to get the product key.  Since the recovery using the Lenovo Recovery disks failed, I installed Windows 7 Professional 64-bit using an OEM CD that I have.  When I go to activate Windows, I get a message that Windows cannot be activated!  Of course, there is also no method of contacting Microsoft on the activation window either. What am I supposed to do with these workstations?  I cannot use recovery media and I cannot activate Windows.  Are these junk? Thank you in advance for your help!

A:Recovery Failed Using Lenovo Recovery Disks

What model is the Thinkstation?
I work mostly on laptops, but the process should be the same.  First, I have had better luck recovering windows 7 from DVDs if the HDD is empty, so I use some tool to remove all the partitions from the disk.  The recovery disks should build what they need.  You can use whatever tool you like, but I have used Active KillDisk, free edition.  It should have the option to create an iso.  Once it starts and gets to 1% or something like it, you can cancel the process unless you are worried about security and private info on the machines.  In that case, you can let it finish.  Restore again from the DVDs you created.
I asked about the model because it appears to me that microsoft is letting machines with windows 7 and 8.x licenses activate windows 10 without charge.  They don't advertise that and I cannot guarantee or speak for MS, but that has been my experience.  People have been running windows 10 on many older models, if they are not too old.  I think installing win 7 at this point is a poor idea on most hardware.  You can download win 10 here:
you said you have win7 pro now, so choose win 10 pro 64-bit during the install and at the point it asks for a key, select the option that says "I don't have a key" or something like that.  It will activate automatically from the SLIC win 7 marker in the BIOS.

Hello I have done many Win 10 upgrades without any problems but my current problem has taken 2 days out of my life!! without a solution. Here is the situation.
I created a USB media drive using the Media Creation tool and have used it this week to successfully upgrade Win 8.1 systems so I know it works just fine. So yesterday wanted to upgrade a Win 8.1 system which is a full retail set up and has been activated for 2 years and still shows up as activated. I inserted the USB stick and ran the SETUP.exe file as usual to start the upgrade process and yes, the USB files were for the correct edition, after the usual pre-amble I got the message "Something Happened ---failed to validate the product key"---and of course it all stopped. Did this several times with same result. So to really verify that the Win 8.1 installation was OK I got the installation verified by Microsoft and it was just fine.
First question----- why is it rejected ? any fixes ? as I see it many times on the Forums etc.
I now tried booting from the USB and doing the upgrade that way and selected the Upgrade route for installation declining to enter a product key and this then started to behave normally. Now I did not have enough time to do anything more so terminated the installation process after a few seconds. I was asked if I wanted to quit and said yes. I then returned to the Win 8.1 system and turned the PC off . Today I decided to do the installation and Booted from the USB again and went... Read more

A:Failed to validate product key problem strikes again

A couple of "first things first".

You can't do an upgrade by booting from the USB flash drive. You can only do an upgrade from running setup.exe from within Windows.

Second, in your current Windows 8.1, open an elevated ("run as administrator") command prompt. Run:

slmgr /dlv

Post the result window here, we might see the problem there. It will not contain any unique identification information so you don't have to blank anything out.

Good morning all,

I am trying to upgrade one of our Laptops in our lab to Windows 10 Pro. It currently has Windows 7 Pro on it, and when I attempt to use the DVD copy I burned I am getting the dreaded "Setup has failed to validate the product key".

I went back to my settings and re-entered my product key again just to ensure that was not the problem and Windows 7 accepted it (again!) and activated my copy. However, when I ran the setup again it gave me the same error message and I am not able to continue with the install. And yes, I have tried using administrative credentials to no avail.

It's not defective media as I have already used this disk to upgrade another system to Windows 10 (however, the other system was a HOME install, not a PRO install). Further to that I tried using this disk on another Win 7 Pro install and it worked without incident. So I know it has something to do with the system or Win 7 Pro install itself on this PC.

When I try installing from boot it will not allow me to upgrade the current system - it tells me to boot into windows to complete an upgrade.

Any ideas? I checked the system logs and there is no mention as to why the install is failing. I'd prefer to do an upgrade as opposed to a full install as I have a lot of configs and settings that would be a major PITA to redo.

Hi guys,So my friends hard drive failed and unfortunetly he has lost everything.I've replaced the broken hard drive for him and reinstalled Windows 10. However when I went to check if the OS was activated, it was showing as not been activated?? I thought machines after Windows 8 had their licance saved in the BIOS so we didn't have this issue? Also there is no sticker on the back or under the battery containing the product key for Windows.I also spoke to Microsoft but they were uable to help.Any help is appreciated! Thanks.

Recently I posted a thread concerning Zone Alarm and my problems with that program. I was told that Black Ice was a good alternative, so I got it. Now, the program doesn't seem to want to work at all and when I try to uninstall it I get the message:

"Failed to get product version from C:\WINDOWS\biversion.dll.Code: -1"

I would really appreciate it if someone could help me get this stinking program off my computer. Thanks.

My wife's PC started generating a BSOD with an error reference to a boot file. So I am attempting to use the recovery disks to repair the install. I ran the install and now the BSOD is gone and windows is attempting to start in repair mode but after the Wk2 loading screen I get the following prompt:

The file "NT5INF.CAT" on Window 2000 Professional CD-ROM is needed.

Type the path where the file is located and then click OK."

There is a drive pulldown with the title "Copy from this:" and the default is "GLOBALROOT\DEVICE\CDROM1\I386" The pulldown menu also has the option of "G:\"

If I click OK nothing happens. I moved the CD over to this PC and found that the file is under the following directory on the CD I386\NT5INF.CAT. The two optical drives are F and G, so I tried typing G:\I386\NT5INF.CAT or F:I386\NT5INF.CAT and switching the CD from each of the drives, but although the drives light up on boot and when the CD is inserted, they are not responding these drive paths when I click OK at this prompt.

Does any have any ideas? Shouldn't this just be a drive path? Is there a special command I missing?

Hi guys, bit of a problem. I have a machine that was running win7, a couple of weeks back I upgraded for free to win 10 but today the hard drive has failed. I don't have any record of the product key so I'm not sure how I'm going to be able to install and activate windows again.

Is there any way of retrieving a product key from a dead drive? I've tried accessing the drive from another computer and it spins up then stops.

Windows 10 activates by your hardware. If you are going to reinstall windows 10 you may need to contact microsoft. If you are looking for the key for window 7 it should be on the side of the computer. If this is a retail computer.

KeyFinder | Magical Jelly Bean This may help you with win 7 If you buy chance get the hard drive to work long enough to get your key.

WARNING ! Against MS Product Key downloads. This is 2ce it has bit me.My bad.

Brand spanking new Dell Inspiron 660 W7, 64bit machine nekkid on the inside. Purchased Office 2013 Pro Product Key. Failure to install. I spent an hour before calling Microsoft - they gave up after 1 1/2 hours. They will call me back!! I hope? The MS download install by product key is pathalogically flawed to prevent installation.

1. I follow directions - www.office.com/setup
2. created userid and password for this machine
3. Filled in all the blanks and the product key
4. begin install and filled out the silly little junky key
5. Continue
6. Message - An email has been sent to the address noted, open email and follow instructions.
there is no other option to continue
Can you believe this?
8. I go to another machine and remote into the server to get email
9.email says click her to verify our email
10 I click to verify and browser opens and begins installing MS Office - ON THE WRONG MACHINE
12. I close out and go to the new machine and go to the new machine and sign on as to download and reload Office
11. Dialog box - AN ERROR HAS OCCURRED - and can't get any further.
12. after 1 1/2 hours and much wrangling and trying I cannot get it installed.

A:Solved: MS Office 2013 Pro Product Key Failed Install

Hi there,

I feel your pain here. What you have experienced is Microsoft's new 'click to run' (C2R) install process, which streams the install over the internet. The idea is that it will be quick and you can start using the application(s) before they're completely installed, just not all of the features. But, like I said that's the idea, and it sometimes doesn't work that way. Personally I hate it and always ask for the MSI (downloadable file you can run locally), although I have got it to work myself. In fact I don't know anyone who has actually been pleased by this process.

While I don't have a solution for you, I did want to post so you knew you weren't alone in the frustrating process described. That being said, I do think Office 2013 is their greatest achievement yet and is by far the best piece of Office software they've released.

I have an IBM A21p 2629HTU Thinkpad. I ran an IBM diagnostic test called a Drive Fitness Testing which indicated "one or more bad sectors found". I was directed to utilize the Erase Disk Utility to repair the drive. This would entail the use of a Product Recovery CD. I called the IBM HelpCenter and they said that they no longer provide this item for windows 2000NT. Any hints as to where I can legally obtain this item. Apparently it contains the OS and all appropriate drivers.

Hi, Generally, and I am speaking of the regular full size hard drives, one bad spot is not going to kill anything, at least right away. Windows when it comes across a bad sector, will pull any data from it, and save the data as best it can.....it may be something needed, but if you have not seen any software errors or other file indications, then it is probably nothing needed.
The bad spot is then marked so, and not used by Windows again.

A full format sometimes can fix the spot, for some filesystem error, but if it is actual physical damage, then it will be marked so during a format (or a repair or recovery utility you were advised about) and not used, but you may still run OK that way. Depending on where the bad spot is, you might stay good for quite some time.

I have a hard drive with 8 bad spots, running win98, and the drive has been that way for 5 years.
The bad sectors/spots can increase, and that is a sure sign of trouble, so do not just let it go on, as it may crash totally at any time. I've read that defrag is not good to do in this situation.
Whether that is true or not, I can't say.

You can have some amazing luck on Ebay, search the Laptop or Notebook posts for that same model of ThinkPad, but, it would have to be exactly the same to work, you might find used ones for sale that come with the Recovery disks you need, for not much cost.

I have reloaded IBM ThinkPads with a regular install of win98SE and then been able to download and add the driver... Read more

Hello, I have a Dell XPS 8700 desktop I'm working on. after Hard Drive failed, I installed a new one. The computer boots to a black screen... SATA 0 installed SATA 1 installed 2-5 blank.
I have attempted to installed windows 7 via USB, and Windows 10. All goes well until the product key is required. I have also attempted the Dell OS Recovery and Dell Key Creator. All failed due to no back up or product key. When I enter the Service tag Dell OS Recovery says "No Recovery found for this device"
I do not have any backups. I have contacted Dell and they are no help. I can enter the BIOS, and when I attempted to install windows 10 I was able to get to the system recovery menu. Attempted every option in that list and nothing found. Now I can enter command prompt from this menu. I was told by Dell there is no command or solution to recover the Product key off the motherboard, they said I have to send the motherboard in to have it repaired. Is there anything I can do. I have been racking my brain for days trying to find a solution. Any help or advice is appreciated.

Is there any way to recover your product key? I have Win7 retail for 3 computers. I have just installed on the last computer (the first two were installed a year or so ago) and I don't have the product key. I think I tossed it out as it was on a card IN THE BOX rather than a sticker on the end like every other frigin MS product I have seen. I must have saw the card and just tossed it out thinking it was just another ad trying to sell me something else. Seeing the sticker (but not looking close) just assumed it had the product key.

Hi all,

I'm in need of some help.

My stepdads computer stopped applying Windows updates after getting the following error: "Update Windows license and product key tokens failed with 0x80070005."

I've followed various advice and I'm now in a situation where Windows thinks it's unlicensed! I can assure you the PC has been licensed and trouble free for the past three years or so until this happened. I know the computer was taken away to a specialist and they removed some software in my absence, my step dad isn't very computer literate so getting exact information and timings is impossible.

The PC is still working, but this is a blocker to resolving another issue, so I really hope you guys can sort me out.

I've run chkdsk and scandisk, no problems there.

Thanks in advance
