PC turning itself off all on it's own

Q: PC turning itself off all on it's own

My PC has just started to turn itself off all on it's own ............. everything is fine whilst I am using it, but if I leave it for a while it just turns itself off and re-boots ..... it will do this whether or not there are any programs running or they are all closed down except for background processes

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Here is the issue, when my computer goes to sleep after it's on for a while when I move the mouse to get the screen back up it shows the backround no icons or anything to click.
Same if I turn it off and turn it back on. I have to turn it off and on many times then go to safe mode and shut down then turn it on again for it to work. Just now I had to turn it on/off 4 times for it to show the icons and task bar. Usually it is left blank with nothing to click having no choice but to turn it off.
Norton says no viruses.
My computer is HP with windows 7. I bought it in 2011.
This problem has been happening for a long time. Please help.

Hello squirrels and welcome to Seven Forums.

I think I'd start out by trying to do a startup repair. It's been suggested that the startup repair be done 3 times (regardless of what the notifications say) and the computer rebooted after each repair.

Hi there, i have some issues with my monitor (awhhh).

It's working fine like 10-20-30 minutes and then it's turning off (for no reason) while the cumputer is running and the flash/button goes pink. I don't know what's this colour stands for. Blue is when the monitor is active, yellow is when the monitor is turn to sleep and when i shut down my computer, but PINK? What's that, anyone?

The monitor is turning OFF, not in a sleep mode or something.
I must remove the cable and push back in every 20 minutes. That's wrong.

Maybe it's the cabel, maybe something with drivers and stuff...i don't know.

My other half and son were using the computer yesterday, and then left it on to do some other things, upon returning to the laptop noticed that the power button was solid blue (should be flashing orange when in standby mode), with nothing on the screen, moved the mouse with nothing happening as well as CTRL+ALT+DELETE.

Powered computer down by holding the on/off button for 5 seconds, restarted but noticed that I could hear the DVD drive power up but that is where it stops/hangs, nothing comes on the screen. Have done this numerous times, as well as removing the battery and starting with just mains power on?

Can anyone help with what might be going on ??

Can you enter Bios (f2 on startup) to check if the HDD recognized. Also, try to reinstall Windows with a recovery disk or Windows copy disk.

hello !   is it bad if i never turn off a desk-top console, or even a laptop computer, if the equipment is not going to be used for several hours ?  is it bad for a computer if the computer is left in the "turned-on mode" forever, without being turned off, ever ?  i guess that it is necessary to define "bad for the computer".  does the computer wear out faster if it is not turned off and turned on regularly ?  thank you.

Long story short, My computer suddenly shut off, And when i pressed the power button it would attempt to turn on then just fail and shut down completely[no signal to anything, only fans]
I cleaned out the pc and cleaned out the power supply, reassembled and it turned on as per normal. i used it for about 35 minutes, set it to sleep for an hour or two, turned it on, used it for about an hour and a half then it suddenly turned off again. When this happens it either powers on for 2 seconds then powers down, or it powers up all fans and mouse led but no signal to keyboard or screen whatsoever i assumed it was the power supply so i purchased a new one today and installed it, It turned on first try, i assumed it was fixed, i used it, set it to sleep as per normal and went to turn it on again and it turned on all fans but once again no power to anything else, just fans it seems. I tried everything[I have two sticks of ram so i switched them/used them singularly tried running without fans, Oddly it didn't beep even without video card or ram but nothing made a difference. I just borrowed a single 2gb stick of ram from a friend and it successfully powered on and I am using it normally.. But i just can't imagine the problem was just the ram and i expect it to power off again soon, Can anyone help?

Just few hours ago I was listening to songs on Napster. Then I played some online games. I had to reboot at one point since it was going slow on me.

For some reasons unknown, my computer turns off and tried to boot itself, but kept turning off and booted itself. Somehow it did that in a loop. I tried to wipe up some dirt from inside(it may not be completely wiped up). I even tried to rearrange the cables and such. Now, if I press the power button, it only shows the power indicator, but it won't boot. I'm just puttoping it to rest right now hoping that it would back up tomorrow when I turn it on.

I have Velocity Micro with Windows XP SP3 (update progression). Motherboard: ASUS. I posted this using my laptop. I appreciate any help or input.

Thanks,
G.

Let me clarify. My brother brought his computer over for me to recable it. Simple process right? Not so much. Before I get into details, let me give you specs. Keep in mind since I did not build the system, I do not have all the information I usually would.

Windows Vista
4 GB of RAM (unknown brand)
Abit motherboard (unknown serial number)
AMD athlon 64 3.0 GHZ processor
4 250GB harddrives (In raid configuration to look like 2 hard drives @ 500GB each)
Antec 550 watt power supply
Nvidia Geforce 8600 GT Video card

Okay, so when I recabled everything and powered the system on, it would not boot at all. Everything was on and running, but the bios was not doing anything, and everything was at a standstill. Not knowing if the raid configuation and the motherboard had anything to do with it, I started swtiching the sata connections into different configurations based on what I think the individual would have done. In doing this I accidentally pulled a jumper from the motherboard. Setting it aside and not thinking it was important, I plugged everything back in and attempted to power on the computer.

This is where it gets interesting. Instead of even powering on like it did last time, it powered up for MAYBE one second before shutting off. Any other attempts to power it on were futile, and resulted in nothing.

After this, I replaced the jumper where it was supposed to go, and powered on the system again. The same thing happened. I want to think the power supply is toast, but I wou... Read more

I turned it off and on again and this time it turns on for a couple of seconds before turning on again - repeatedly. No display or anything. I've tried removing the CMOS battery and putting it back, still nothing. I've had this PC for about 2 years now and haven't changed a thing except that I installed an SSD a few months ago.

We seems to have the save problem. When windows 7 starts MSE(Microsoft Security Essentials) icon is red. It stay some seconds ant then disapear. Try to launch, it doesn't.
In the same time I dsicover that in my navigators (internet explorer 8, Mozilla firefox 4) when I search something with google and click a link, I'm sometimes redirected to other links then those expected. Have to click two or three times to go on the link proposed by google.

The solution I find, wich let me suspects the intervention of one or more viruses, is to open the tasks mangaer and kill the rundll32 process wich use processor.
Then retry to launch. It don't want to start. I have to go in the services manager to make the process start "automatic" and launch the service.
Then my computer is protected. And I'm not redirect anymore. I just can't turn off my computer.
Try to find something whith "Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware". It found some potential attacks and droppped them.

Hi all. Once again I got another problem (and again another story ).

It started about 4 weeks ago, I woke up and my other pc was on and making a bad noise, as I looked at it the HD light was flashing in sync with the sound . So I tried to turn it off by holding in the power button inÖ.nothing so I went to the wall and switch off the power to it. I turned it back on and the pc started up but its self , so I thought I would locate the noise as it was on. The noise was coming form the PSU so I thought that was dead.

I told some what had happened and they told me that where the HD light was going that the HD was dead. I check the master and slave in an external HD case and they both work.

The new PSU came today so I put it into the pc wired it all up and switch the main power and again the pc starts up by it self (without any bad sounds this time), I turn the monitor on and all what happens is the light flashes on then off and so on and nothing on the screen.

I donít know what it could be. Anyone got any ideas?

If I am right you want "Wirelless detection" off & password protection on. Is that right?

Could you please explain a little more are you wanting sharing on for a a "Wire" connected network?

If so just do it in "Network and sharing"! Otherwise, I am lost as to what you really want to achieve.

Hi

I have recently purchased a new motherboard\cpu\ram & Hdd to upgrade my existing desktop computer. I have kept my exisiting PSU & AGP Card.

The system will bootup and allow start off the windows installtion but would then turn off after a few minutes. I then have to remove power cable and reconnect to get it to bootup again.

I can enter the BIOS setup without any pobs and it doesnt turn off whilst i in the BIOS setup but when i exit, instead of restarting the system goes off again. Sometimes i have to remove power cable for several minutes before reconnecting because if i reconnect straight away the machine will power on but the fan on the ATI X1950 Pro AGP card spins on full and there is no display on monitor. CPU fan and case fan also come on.

When i am able to boot into the windows setup the machine does POST but then goes off again around the same point of the windows installtion.

I have tried another AGP graphics card, memory modules but still have the same issue.

Does anyone have any suggestion on what the problem could be?

Look at the thermal past on your heatsink. It can be too thick as easily as it can be too thin.
Re-read all the manuals and trouble shooting which came with the Gigabyte board, and also search online for problems with that model.
Try another videographics card to see if the problem goes away.

ok...so my girlfriend's computer, she has two. one is hers and the other is her moms. hers wouldnt turn on, turned out to be a bad psu. her mom's wont turn on, i think it may just be the power button. because it sticks, and just doesn't seem to work the way it should. but i asked if she ever spilled any liquids in there, and she said that her dog once pee'd on it...so yea, after washing my hands, i figured that would be the problem, but just in case, do you think any other thing would contribute to the power not working? everything is hooked up to the motherboard correctly, and the psu i believe is working normal. either way, i replaced the psu with the one from my computer, that i know works, and it still didn't work.

I finally got round to putting all the bits of my new rig together yesterday. Heres my spec of what i built:

Asus A7V333 Mobo
AMD Athlon 2000+
256Mb Crucial DDR
3D Prophet II MX
300w Herolchi Electronic Co (hec) PSU (Brand New)

I got everything connected together and flicked on the PSU, but sadly, no air from back of fan? The single L.E.D that is on my mobo lit up, which gives me some hope, but the fan of the processor did not turn, and neither would the fan of the PSU?
Now ive tried all the obvious solutions, change Power Cable, plug in to a mains socket on its own, check, double-check, and triple check that PSU to mobo connection is correct. But hell if i know what could be the problem???? Apart from a faulty PSU that is  . Should the PSU fan work independant of connection to mobo? As it doesnt when i try it like that also?
Can you think of any suggestions that might help me get to the root of this? Some advice would be much appreciated...

^ Title.

Googled this, didn't find anything exactly like my problem. I have several fans in my PC, but just today only the top one started turning off and on randomly. It'll just abruptly turn itself off then come on either a few minutes later, or as long as a few hours later, making noises. None of the other fans do this. When this one shuts off, the rest are still running.

It's an obvious conclusion that the fan is potentially dying (already planning to replace it tomorrow), but I don't get why it keeps coming back on in that case? Shouldn't it just stay dead? Or is it possible for a fan to just keep turning on and off at will as it dies?

I should also note that this is the only fan in the PC that makes weird noises at random times, so that's a factor in my belief that it's the fan.

But, is it possible that the PSU is causing it? Or would that impact all the fans at once? Is there a way to know for certain?

Thanks in advance.

A:Not Turning On

Hi, From the description, this would sound like a hardware issue. As your notebook is only 9 months old, it will still be under warranty, so my best advice would be to contact HP and arrange to have the notebook repaired under warranty - If needed, you can check your warranty status Here. To contact HP regarding this, start on the link below. http://welcome.hp.com/country/w1/en/contact_us.html Regards, DP-K

Hi all! Hoping for some help with my laptop that decided to stop working! It was fine until yesterday when it suddenly went blank/lost all power. I restarted and it went fine the rest of the evening.  Checked it again this evening, it worked for an hour, then it shut down again, but now won't switch on.  It sits absolutely dead, except when I follow this pattern. I remove the power lead, then remove the battery, wait a few seconds then reconnect the battery. Now the flashing battery light is on. I reconnect the power lead, the light for it shows but very faintly. I then push the power or novo buttons, the laptop will start up but then immediately shut down again, less than 1/2 seconds later. If I press the power button again nothing happens, it's dead as a door nail!  There is no noise from the fan, it's clean and not overheated. I'm stumped,  does anybody have any suggestions?

Hi Bucketybuck ,

Welcome to the Community Forums.

How about if you remove the battery , unplug the charger , remove the harddrive , remove the RAM  then press down the power button for 12 seconds to power drain.

Check if the ac adapter is working ( or if you have a spare ac charger to test) .

Plug in the charger ( battery , ram and harddrive still outside) . Turn it on . How is the power LED ? It suppose to beep without the memory but should indicate power or activity.  If it does beep , then try to isolate RAM individually on the slot.

Update us how it goes .

Regards

I have a year and a half old Y40 that out of nowwhere went blank. It then kept hibernating and un hibernating on it's own and depending on where I moved the screen on the laptop it would try to boot. I was able to get it to stay up if I plugged into a monitor and thought it would be a good idea to do a hard boot. Now the laptop will not turn on at all. A lot of what I'm reading seems to point to a motherboard, but on a 1.5 year old laptop that I take good care of? Ideas? Solutions anyone?

this is a S.A.T.A. style mother board, never used one b 4, i think my inexperiance in that area is why i cant figure it out. but if you need the specs the motherboard is called "DFI LAN PARTY UT nF4 Ultra-D"
i would have firgured even if i messed up something compleatly terriable like not pluggin in the right thing, it would still turn on when i pused the botton, then

My sincere apogoly for (probably) posting this in the wrong section (if I did atleast).

I was playing a normal game of League of Legends a day or 4 ago with my friend on Skype, when suddenly my monitor's screen turned black saying there was no signal, my keyboard and mouse stopped giving light and there was no sound anymore either. My PC was still on (the light coming from my power button was still working), but I couldn't turn down my pc through the power button, so I forced it to shut down by pressing on the O button from the power supply. I pressed the button back to I, tried to turn my PC on again and nothing happend. There was literally no sign of life : The blue light that's supposed to come from my power button didn't work, I didn't hear any fan working, the PC does nothing at all. It's not making any beep sounds whatsoever.

So I was thinking of what the problem might have been. I thought it would've either been my motherboard that died on me or my power supply. I was testing if my power supply died by using a paper clip that was connected to the green and black wire. I did hear a boot sound but I didn't see any fan spin around. Is this a sign of a faulty power supply unit or could it still be my motherboard?

Well the only way to really tell is by using a dedicated PSU tester or another PSU which is known to be in good working order.
You can remove your PSU and take it to the local pc repairman, chances are they might do the testing for free.
However keep your finger crossed, because sometimes when a PSU goes bad, it can take the mobo with it.

I have a HP Pavilion Desktop and whenever I turn it on I can hear that the fan is moving inside and it seems like it doesn't have enough power to completely function.

It only opens when :
1) I let it sit for hours until it completely charge it's power ? I'm not sure if it really charges something.
2) I have to use my hair blower towards the back of my chasis and after few minutes I noticed the power button of my desktop lights up.

Please help me what to do

sounds like a faulty power unit....swap in a KNOWN good working unit to test it.

Just got a new Dell PC. I'm a complete novice on computer matters but I connected it up following the instructions to the letter. Everything turned on fine and Windows set up started. I put in passwords etc that were asked for and then suddenly the processor just turned itself off. The monitor screen went black but the power light on it was still lit. I tried turning processor back on but it started to 'crank up' for a few seconds and then just turned itself off again, tried several times to turn it on again but no joy. I have it connected to a surge protector and there is plenty of ventilation around the processor, but it was only ever on for 5 minutes at the most so don't think it can be overheating. ANy ideas before I call Dell plese?

A:New PC keeps turning itself off

The first thing Dell will say (if you tell them) is take it off the surge protector.

Can you boot into Bios (press whatever key is specified in your manual) and stay in there for any length of time?

Have you connected ANY other non-Dell devices via serial/parallel/USB port?

If you were provided with an OS install disk, will it boot up?
