Why is Windows showing less volume for an external monitor's speakers?

Q: Why is Windows showing less volume for an external monitor's speakers?

When a friend's laptop was connected to an external HDMI monitor with integrated speakers, the volume attainable through the laptop speakers was louder than that attainable through the external monitor.
Hardware differences could easily account for the volume differences.

But what was odd was the Windows 7 sound control panel. The image below is an example of that control panel (but on their system, Headphones would be replaced by the external monitor's speakers).

Even though all volumes were turned up to 100%, when the laptop's speakers were set as the default, the green level indicators would fill all the bars (during loud sounds), but when the external monitor's speakers were set as the default, the green level indicators would never fill more than half the bars.

Why is this, and can anything be done to improve the volume on the external monitor?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

A: Why is Windows showing less volume for an external monitor's speakers?

When HDMI connection is used, the HDMI sound is generated separately from the regular PC audio. The HDMI audio, in almost all cases, is either generated internally in the video card or generated from an S/PDIF (digital) connection. Then you have the difference in the audio system in the external monitor. Thus comparing the regular PC audio to HDMI isn't a good comparison.

When I connect speakers to my laptop the volume is initially high but then reduces automatically within a few seconds.

My laptop is a TOSHIBA Satellite L50-C-1FQ

This is problematic because even if I increase my volume to 100%, I still only get 3 bars maximum when I connect speakers as per the 2nd image attached. How can I prevent this?

Thanks

When tested on other devices, the sound system blows the roof off. On my laptop, it doesn't (max level on computer controls, media player and speakers knob is lower). I'm pretty sure it's not the soundboard, but I've desperately fiddled with drivers with no avail.
Sound actually starts being heard only after the knob goes past the quarter mark, and does not increase in level too much between 3rd quarter and max setting. Works fine when on my tablet, for example, though.

Edit: Also, volume is lower on right speaker

Hi! I have external Altec Lansing speakers that I use to connect to my iPhone and laptop to listen to music. When I first got the speakers, they worked fine and there was no problem. I've only used them a couple times. Now, they are fine when they are at a very low volume, but when I turn the volume up they start a high "screeching" sound, and as I turn the volume louder, the sound gets lower in tone and louder. I can turn the volume up loud enough to eliminate the sound, but then the speakers are really loud. The sound is VERY loud. This happens no matter if I have a device connected to the speakers or not. Can anyone help? These were expensive speakers, and I'd like to use them longer! Thanks!

on 2/17/16 [Personal information removed] and again on 2/26/16 had live chats with HP to correct the issue with no longer getting sound thru my HP 750-114 to my Dell Monitor S2415H.   Sound thru the monitor works perfectly until I use some of my programs or an upload appears.  Both times the HP tech had to uninstall sound driver and reinstall the driver.  Each time I spent at least 1.5 hours on live chat while they corrected the issue.  The last correction lasted less than 24 hours and the red X at the speaker on the task bar appeared which told me to connect external speakers.  The sound works with external speakers connected but I am not happy with that solution as originally it worked fine for at least two months using my monitor. The last technician even had my dell monitor set as the default sound monitor. Even with the external speakers plugged in if I insert a CD I do not get any sound!!!!!. I am extremely frustrated with HP and Windows 10 regarding this on going issue.  My last HP has less problems over the 6 years I had it compared to this new computer.  Unfortunately I know just enough to get myself in trouble with the computer so unless I get step by step instructions I am reluctant to uninstall the driver and re install the sound driver myself. FRUSTRATED BEYOND BELIEF!! Regards, Bobby-left

Hi,The screen to my laptop has been shattered for quite some time now and I've been trying to figure out how to be able to view the BIOS on an external monitor. I've tried pressing f2, f8, f10, and esc on startup and trying to use f4 to switch the display to no avail. As a side note, when I press f10 if I try to press any of the f keys afterwards my computer makes a high pitched beep, I don't know if that means anything but I feel like it's worth mentioning. I use an external keyboard so I don't have an fn key, if that matters at all. Lastly, I've tried to disconnect the lcd before but my attempts at taking apart my laptop in the past haven't exactly gone well and I don't trust myself to do it without ruining things further. Is there anything I can do about this, or am I out of luck?

Hey guys

I will keep it quite short.
Basically I have an ACER aspire 5684WLMI laptop
A few months ago I took a few long airplane journeys with it and after a week I noticed a strange issue with the laptop.
The BIOS just doesnt show. Its a completely black screen as if I didnt turn on the laptop at all. The laptop does boot into windows fine and the screen comes on. But within windows I can not use an external monitor. I tried it with several differnt monitors but it says there is no incomming signal even though the laptop is supposedly fine. Switching the main displays didn't do anything.

I have tried several things
Hard resetting the laptop (holding power button for a minute without a battery or power source)
Reinstalling the graphics drivers.

Stats
ACER aspire 5684WLMI laptop
Core 2 duo
Geforce go 7600
2gb ddr2 ram
160gb HDD

I suspect something has gone pop in my travels but it would be nice to fix as it was handy to take the laptop to friends houses and pop on a movie. Hopefully it is something simple that I have yet to try

Thanks in advance.

I've searched but can't find anything relative. I wanted to watch a film through the external monitor port connected to a projector. I could see all on the big screen except the film itself.
I checked the laptop screen and the film is being shown on it but it's not being cloned - I just get the media player border and buttons but it's only showing a black screen, not the film.

I tried a friend?s Tecra 9000 and it shows the film perfectly. What gives?
The BIOS is updated and I have the latest Toshiba supplied drivers and followed all guides for TV out, monitor cloning, setting resolutions etc, just haven't found the magic combination.

Maybe the Video Card can only output Overlays to one Display at a time.

Go into the nVidia control panel and look for the Overlay settings, you should be able to set Overlays to the external monitor/projector.

The Volume Mixer in Windows 7 is supposed to show applications that are running sound, right? Well, mine shows some applications, like Firefox and Guild Wars 2 and Mozilla Thunderbird and KMPlayer. But it doesn't show volume for other applications that use sound like Winamp and ePSXe (playstation emulator).

I'm playing Final Fantasy VIII on ePSXe and the game doesn't have a volume control itself for, say, music and/or sound effects. And I'd like to be able to turn down the sound on the emulator game so that the game volume doesn't intermingle with my music in the background played by Winamp.

Is there a way I can add these applications to the Volume Mixer? Or, alternatively, is there a freeware/opensource program that will allow me to adjust the volume of individual programs?

I am new here so hopefully I have done everything right. I was going to try to list my system specs here in this thread but I followed the link at the top of this Post New Thread page and filled out my System Specs according to the walkthrough.

With Dell Support Assist microphone test -- earphone playback is good, on-board speaker is terribly scratchy. The sound card lists as "ATI high Definition Audio Device" and "IDT High Definition Audio CODEC."
The laptop is Dell Studio 15 (1555) running windows 7 Professional, 236GB used, 214GB free space, Intel P8700 2.53 GHz Processor, 64 bit OS, 4GB memoryThe built-in speakers used to sound good but now they are too scratchy to understand. However the headset and external speakers (both 3.5 mm jack interface) sound good and a HDMI connected projector sounds good.
I will appreciate advice.

A:On-board speakers are scratchy but external speakers & headphones sound good?

Hello. As a test, switch from the IDT audio driver to the Windows native audio driver.
1. Open the Device Manager (find it in the Control Panel, or type devmgmt.msc into the search box).2. Expand the "Sound, video & game controllers" and right click on "IDT High Definition Audio Device".3. Select to "Update Driver Software".4. Click on "Browse my computer for driver software".5. Click "Let me pick from a list of drivers on my computer".6. Put a check in the box "Show compatible hardware" if not already checked.7. In the list of devices, click "High Definition Audio" (the native driver).8. Click "Next".9. On the Update Driver Warning box, click "Yes" (install the driver). 10. Restart the laptop if prompted. If not prompted, then no need to restart.[To get back to the IDT driver, do it again but reverse the names in steps 2 and 7.]
If you get the noise while using the native driver then it is not a driver issue, which would mean there is a strong chance of speaker failure, particularly since the noise is not in headphones. If you would like to replace the speakers I can point you to the service manual.

I have a new Acer Laptop running Windows 7 Home Premium. My internal speakers work fine. I have 2 different sets of external speakers that work just fine on my other computers running on Windows XP. Both sets of speakers are plug n play so there are no drivers. I've seen postings all over the internet about this problem. Contacted Microsoft Windows about it and they say I must pay them $49 for 30 minutes to work on the problem when in fact they CAUSED the problems with Windows 7. I've had responses from MS techs that assume I don't know what I am doing. They suggest things that do not work and their final suggestion has been "make sure they are plugged in". My gosh, where do these techs come from? I believe the only ones with the real fix is Microsoft but it will take them TIME, and then they'll have to have a Update Fix somewhere down the road.

I recently got a new HP zBook 15 with the slim docking station and am experiencing an issue related to the speaker output. If I plug my external powered Bose speakers into the line out of the docking station I get sound out of both the external Bose speakers and the internal laptop speakers at the same time. In addition the sound from the Bose speakers sounds horrible...tinny and completely lacking any bass. If I plug the Bose speakers into the headphone jack on the side of the laptop (not the docking station) then I get great sound and ONLY the Bose speakers produce sound (which is what I want). Is there a fix to get only the external speakers to play when plugged into the docking station audio out? I've uninstalled and re-installed the Conexent ISST Audio drivers twice...no change. I've tried messing with the B&O Sound Control panel, but it doesn't have any configuration for the audio ports. I've messed around in the Windows Playback devices control panel, but can't seem to find a way to shut off the internal laptop speakers. FYI, this is a fresh install of Windows 10 Pro. All Mircosoft updates installed. All HP updates installed via the HP Support Assistant. Latest laptop BIOS installed. Help! The sound output sounds HORRIBLE through the docking station. There must be a fix.

I just changed from Bose Companion 3 speakers to Companion 5 because the 3 died. The 3 system used a stereo jack plugged into the headphone jack and worked fine until the Bose power supply(?) failed. The 5 uses a USB to connect.

I have an HDMI cable from my TV set top box to computer. Selecting the HDMI input shows only full screen TV display on computer. Also there is a coax cable from set top box to TV tuner card in computer. This allows TV to be displayed via Media Center in an adjustable window and I can open other windows (a browser, for instance) simultaneously. I choose which connection to use on my computer.

Previously with the Companion 3 speakers all sound came from them no matter the source. Now with the 5 speakers the HDMI TV source the sound comes from computer speakers not the Bose speakers. But if I play my music files (using Media Player) or TV (using Media Center) the sound does come from Bose speakers. Also sound from internet (YouTube, news videos, etc.) comes through Bose speakers.

Maybe someone has had this problem and knows a solution.

I'm confused on where you plug in your hdmi set top box. Into your DISPLAY directly using and HDMI in port or some other HDMI in on your PC (like a graphics card?)

Also you have external computer speakers? do they plug in to your pc analog style? I know you said the Bose 5's are with usb.

Right click enable/disable Hide/unhide

Hi,

The next threads say it's not possible by the hardware:
techspot.com/vb/topic140707.html
techspot.com/vb/topic130170.html
They're closed, so I can't comment on them.

BUT when I dual boot to Ubuntu (using the same hardware), I can easily choose to mute the internal speakers, or the jack, or none at all. So why can't it be possible on Vista?

You answered your own question... It's a software/OS issue. If Vista's Realtek options in the Control Panel don't give you the same options as in Ubuntu, you're out of luck

I've removed the poll, as it did not pertain to this thread. Also, you are going to have to give us more info, such as the make/model of the external drive, has it ever worked, size of it, error messages (if any), etc.

thanks,

v

I have two monitors. Both worked fine with this pc.The video card fried and I haven?tbeen able to get both working with my pc since. One is a Dell 1901FP (monitor #1).The other is a Viewsonic GS790 (Monitor #2).

In Windows 7 (64 bit) Monitor #1 works fine. Monitor #2 shows up in the Windows screenresolution screen but nothing shows up on it.

I have tried two different video cards both EVGA. Neither worked, both had the same issue. One was a GeForce GT 730 2GB while the otherwas a GeForce 8400 GS.

The Viewsonic monitor works fine with other PC?s including onewith Windows 7 enterprise.

The motherboard is a Gigayte 970A-G46.

I suspect that it is driver related since multiple videocards have the same issue and the monitor works on another pc fine. In addition this monitor worked with this PCin the past.

Any help to get this going would be really appreciated.

Hey,

I have a Windows 10 Education edition OS. Recently, out of no where, I was playing a game of League of Legends and the computer just switched off. The light stays on on power which is weird and i can hear the fan. The monitor then goes completely black and the power on the monitor slowly flashes. The thing is there is a signal going to the monitor because if I take the HDMI cord or DVI cord out (I've tried both) the "no signal" sign comes on the monitor.

I have been able to reset the windows to no avail. I run the OS on a SSD. Tried it in safe mode but everytime i get in it goes into this weird black screen, power on state.

Any suggestions guys? Thank you sincerely.

I recently noticed there was no sound when using my desktop and when I clicked on the sound icon (bottom right) was told no speakers were connected. I checked all the connections between the tower and the monitor but nothing obvious was disconnected. There are built-in speakers on my HP 2009v monitor so I couldn't figure out what was going on. The monitor is connected to the desktop, although it doesn't show as existing on the HP Support assistant. After a lot of searching on websites and downloading updates from microsoft and HP  I found advice on your forum to download software updates on Windows 8.x. Did this and now my headphones work but the built-in speakers still don't work. Help please! The monitor has it's own set of controls and menu and I get the impression that something there may not sit well with Windows 10 - when I've tried to use the Auto function and the menu on the monitor all sound has previously disappeared (I got as far as sound in the headphones previuosly).  I'm not touching that set of controls now, in case I go back to no sound at all! Any detailed suggestions please? - I don't know lots about computers so I'm a bit intimidated by things like opening in safe mode etc Cheers

Hi: See if installing this W10 IDT audio driver gets the sound to work again. Install and restart the PC. This package provides the IDT Tempo High Definition Audio Driver for supported desktop models that are running a supported operating system. File name: sp71717.exe

I am using Windows XP SP3.

My external hard drive isn't showing up in windows explorer. It does show up in the disk manager and it says healthy.

I have tried changing the drive letter and that didn't work. I have also tried plugging it into a different usb port.

It has never done this before. What is going on?

Post the data reflected in Disk Management for this drive, please.

Both from the upper and lower levels of the Disk Management screen.

I decided to move of my music files onto one external hard drive. The drive (FAT32) has a capacity of 372 Gb and properties show 58.9 Gb has been used.

However I can only see 5Gb of files - the others are taking up the disk space but I just can't see them. I've tried searching, refreshing, etc. Any ideas on how I can gain access to the files??

Thanks in advance

People have been able to recover from "drive gone unallocated" by using MiniTool Partition Wizard.
Download here: Best Free Partition Manager Freeware and free partition magic for Windows 7, Windows 8, Windows Vista and Windows XP 32 bit & 64 bit. MiniTool Free Partition Manager Software Home Edition.
You can install the program in Windows, or run it off a Bootable CD or flash drive.

You then use the tool to Rebuild the MBR (assuming the disk was originally initiated MBR and not GPT.)
Directions here: How to Rebuild MBR with partition magic? Partition Wizard Rebuild MBR Video Help.

If the rebuild is successful then you need to give the partition(s) a drive letter, which you can do in PW also.

See if that works.

I am having a strange problem with my external hard drive for my backups. When I plug the drive in, it does not show up in Windows Explorer. I can make it show up by going into disk management and assigning it a drive letter, but the next time I plug it in, I have the same problem again. Any ideas why this might be occurring?
Edit: Turns out this is not limited to my backup drive. Once I assign a letter, the drives work fine. They will even keep the letter if I eject them and re-insert the USB connection, but any external media I plug in fails to assign a drive letter automatically the first time it is plugged in. While I do not see this as a huge problem, it bothers me that Windows is not working as it used to nor as it should.

Edit2: After reading some of the related forums, I realize I should be clear about a couple things. I am having this problem with drives that have already had their drivers installed in Windows. I do not get a dialog saying that Windows is installing these devices because the devices have already been installed. For some reason, their volume letter has been forgotten by Windows and I have to re-assign it. I am being careful not to use the same letter more than once. I am plugging the drives in while Windows is already running.
Any help would be greatly appreciated so that Windows will automatically assign a drive letter to a device instead of me having to manually do it when Windows forgets what letter it had assigned.

A:External hard drive not showing up in Windows Explorer

Windows 7 x64 Quit Assigning Drive Letters Automatically helped me solve my problem. Ran an Elevated Command Prompt and typed the following commands.mountvol.exe /n
mountvol.exe /eGuess it just needed to be reset by disabling auto mounting and re-enabling it.

I have an office with dual monitors, when they try to print something, the dialog box for the printer shows up on the 2nd monitor, we really want to have it show up on the Primary monitor. I have tried to drag it over and close it, or try to click print on the primary monitor. No matter what I have tried it keeps showing up on the 2nd monitor. I am just curious if anyone has any ideas as to how to get it over to the primary monitor and make it show up there all the time.

Thanks.

I have the ordinary internal speakers (2) playing music on my laptop and they work fine, but I have a pair of (not old) wireless speakers and I though is there a way were possibly a setting could allow me to play music through all of them, it would be great to have my laptop and some speakers in another room playing music.

I've looked deep, but I thought maybe some experts know the trick.
