Internet Slow / Disconnects

Q: Internet Slow / Disconnects

Hey,
I have Verizon DSL rated for 1Mbps. Lately, when someone hangs up the phone in our house, the internet shuts off, and after about 15 seconds, it reconnects. After this disconnect my internet speed is slowed to 300kbps, and will not speed back up unless the modem is reset. I already called Verizon two times and both times they fixed the problem... till I hung up. They had me reset the modem both times. I have filters on all phones in the house. This just started 2-3 weeks ago, and have had the internet for over a year.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Recently like a few days ago, i've been experiencing weird slowdowns in my internet that has never happened before. For example, usually when i go to youtube or search up stuff on google it's relatively fast, but it's taking longer than usual and i have no idea what's the problem.

This also leads to the fact that sometimes like probably every hour or so i cant access the internet and my MSN disconnects and tries to log in but can't. This remains for a few minutes and then suddenly goes back to normal but still with the slow loading times.

I'm also wondering why in the network connections in the "activity" part of my connection status it sends more than it receives.

As said before this has never happened before and i have no P2P applications running that is causing such slow loadtimes and sometimes disconnecting my internet momentarily

This only started about 2 weeks ago- my internet connection used to be very fast. It is wireless and shares with 2 other computers. I noticed this when it started taking about 5 minutes for me to connect to Starcraft 2 and then when the internet would have to reconnect to my network. What could all of a sudden cause my internet to be so slow?

My computer has just gotten slower and slower in connecting and navigating on the internet, if it does at all. I will either get a message that the page can't be loaded or that the connection has been reset or disconnected. I have to try as many as ten times to get to where I want to go once. I have Trend Micro Internet Security Pro and Webroot Spysweeper and got a message that TPTray.exe from Compal Electronic, Inc was trying to change my files and I said not to allow it. In researching the file it seems that it might be malware and could be causing my problem. I have two files with TPTray. One is at C:\ProgramFiles\TOSHIVA\Touch Pad| and the other is in C:\Windows, which is the one that the article said could be malware. However, I don't know and have no idea how to get rid of it. I only know I really can't use my computer the way it is. I would appreciate any help. Keep in mind that I'm a beginner, so be specific.Edit: Moved topic from XP to the more appropriate forum. ~ Animal

From http://www.file.net/process/tptray.exe.html:The process TPTray Application belongs to the software TPTray Application or TouchPad On/Off Utility or Dance Praise by COMPAL ELECTRONIC INC (www.compal.com).Description: File TPTray.exe is located in a subfolder of "C:\Program Files" (generally C:\Program Files\TOSHIBA\TouchPad\). Known file sizes on Windows XP are 53,248 bytes (67% of all occurrence), 49,152 bytes, 45,056 bytes.File TPTray.exe is not a Windows core file. The program can be uninstalled in the Control Panel. The program is loaded during the Windows boot process (see Registry key: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run). TPTray.exe is able to monitor applications, record inputs. Important: Some malware camouflage themselves as TPTray.exe, particularly if they are located in c:\windows or c:\windows\system32 folder. Thus check the TPTray.exe process on your pc whether it is pest.LouisI will suggest that this thread be moved to one of our malware forums.

Okay, this will probably be long, and it is my first post, but I want to get everything covered.

I moved into a new apartment about a month ago. This apartment is set up with a wireless internet provider by the name of Airwave. I have a PC, so I had to get a wireless adapter. I chose the D-Link DWL-G510 Wireless PCI Adapter (rev. b), because Airwave recommended it because all the routers and such here in the complex are D-Link. I followed all of the install instructions, then put the wireless adapter in my PC. I went through the add new hardware wizard, and I was connected to the internet. And hour or two later though, I got disconnected. But then 30 minutes would pass, and I would reconnect. Now, during this disconnects, the network icon in the task bar would say my signal strength was excellent, and that I was still connected, yet all programs requiring internet (AIM, FireFox/IE, Thunderbird, etc...) would not function, as if there were no internet connection. This problem has persisted still to this day.

In addition, this Airwave was advertising "High Speed Internet" and to the contrary, I felt it would go rather slowly. Some internet speed tests (CNET and PcPitstop) would report usually between 200-300 kpbs. So after many calls to the service provider, I find out it should be running between 1500 and 3000 kbps. For some reason beyond me, I now find out I am running 10 times slower than I should be.

Today, one of the techs in this area called me, and walked me... Read more

I would really appreciate any advice anyone could give me, been having this problem for a good while now! I'm pretty sure its a virus/trojan or something...running windows vista, a few months ago something called antimalware doctor was installed onto my laptop, ever since i've been having crashes and my laptop freezes/becomes unresponsive. I've tried to get rid of the problem with antivirus software, but its not detecting anything. Also, computer seems disconnect regularly for about a half an hour, then reconnects, although the wireless connection is still o.k.
Thanks a million!

Hey everyone.

Well just recent I have noticed that I'm facing quite a few different problems. I'm not sure if it could be related to a newly installed WRT120N Linksys router or not because 2 other desktop computers in my household that are connected to it work perfectly fine.

Basically, my internet browser, Firefox, "lags" more than usual and has a very slow response time compared to normal. It takes awhile sometimes just to google search something. It should be quick (other 2 computer's internet connection working blazing fast) but it's not. (Speedtest shows that I should have around 20mb/s downloading speed, but actual use shows otherwise, as it is incredibly slow.) For some reason, Internet Explorer seems to outperform my Firefox too. And yes, I have also tried reinstalling Firefox.

At the same time, every few hours or so, my internet disconnects and the "Limited or no connectivity" warning shows at the bottom.

In addition to that, when I try to repair the connection, I can't because I get the error "Windows could not finish repairing the problem because the following action cannot be completed: Renewing your IP address" , so I'm unable to renew my IP too.

My ipconfig/all shows funky information too, with the dns servers and everything -ipconfig shown at bottom.

So far, I have tried a few things but have failed at fixing my internet connection. I have these methods already:

I have a question about a problem I encountered last night. Me and my cousin connect through a virtual LAN program called Hamachi so we could play games together. However, the Hamachi server kept disconnecting us earlier that day and our pings were massive around 1000 - 3000ms. When I got home that night we decided to try again, the pings were steady around 300ms, however, there would be a large spike after about 2 or 3 pings that would be 3000ms.

My cousin told me "It could be your computer doing stuff, my girlfriends was around 2ms until she opened something and it jumped to 112ms." I told him that I thought it was unlikely according to what I've been learning in class so far. Because if the definition of latency is the time it takes for data to propagate down the media, what would that have to do with the processor?
I told him that I thought it was something on Hamachi's end. And He tells me "Or it could be a processing spike that interrupts the speedflow of media to your networking controller." (which I honestly think he pulled off google or something) I have a feeling he is pulling my leg, because both him and one of my IT friends I believe like to pull my leg since I don't know as much as they do. So they can tell me whatever the want and I have to believe it.

So to test my theory I downloaded a benchmarking tool to put my processor on 100% load. I pinged cisco.com and got normal ping times, I pinged other computers on my network a... Read more

Register at DSLReports and run their Line Quality Tests. It's best to run this test with a direct wired connection to eliminate any wireless issues from the results. It's useful many times to run this test several times, and we'd like to see each of the results. Post the results link from the top of the test display page for each test run here.

The link to post is near the top of the page and looks like:

If you wish to post this result to a forum, please copy/paste this URL
http://www.dslreports.com/linequality/nil/2357195 <- sample only, yours will obviously be different!
and your IP will be disguised.

Copy/paste that link here.

Note: You will have to enable PING (ICMP) request response either in your router (if you have one), or in your computer's firewall for direct modem connections. This is very important to get the most important part of the test to run.
DSLReports

Here's also the Line Quality Tests FAQ to help you understand the results. This will answer some questions about the line quality display.

Hello I have embarq dsl service. I currently have 2 desktops and 1 laptop networked. The one desktop is hardwired in the other 2 pc's connect wirelessly. I have an Embarp 660 series modem and a linksys BEFW11S4 router. Constantly and I do mean at least once every 30 minutes, my internet connection drops and I have to reboot the router...not the modem only the router. When calling embarq I get the runaround and nothing is ever accomplished. I hate that I am payin money for something that is virtually unusable for anything. I am also having trouble opening ports on the desktop that is wired in. According to scans even port 80 is closed at times. I have no firewalls, not even windows firewall, enabled on any of the computers. Although I do use AVG on all 3. I have been dealing with this problem for 4 months and would appreciate any assistance. Thanks, Paula

The system says I am connected but browsers don't function until a soft restart. My PC is for personal use and is owned by me. I have recently added Spybot AV and previously used Windows Defender. McAfee in the distant past. None of them show much and if they do and the item is fixed, I still experience the same media disconnects.

Is there a solution for this with anyone, please.

Welcome to TSF.

We will take a look at your system for malware, but it's unlikely the cause of loss of connection. If we can't locate a problem, you will be encouraged to ask for advice in the Networking forum, here at TSF.

Download HiJackThis - this program will help us determine if there are any spyware/malware on your computer. Create a folder at C:\HJT and move HiJackThis.exe there. Double click on the program to run it.

1. If it gives you an intro screen, just choose [Do a system scan and save a logfile].
2. If you don't get the intro screen, just hit [Scan] and then click on [Save log].
3. Post the HiJackThis.log file here. Do not fix anything in HiJackThis since they may be harmless.

Hey guys,

As soon as I connect my VPN it disconnects the internet. I'm using a desktop with windows 7, connected to wifi via a Netgear 4600 router. I have two internet connections, one of which is not connected to the router, both connections are affected. Used to work fine and I don't think I have done anything that would cause this. I already looked online and didn't find anything that was helpful.

Any suggestions?

Thanks

My internet randomly disconnects for half a second. For instance, most of the time I have ventrilo and mIRC open, and sometimes (a lot of the time) an online game (TF2, CS etc) My internet will disconnect me from all of them at the same time, then I try to get back it and it lets me, so it seems its only disconnecting for like 1 second, then its back on.

hi Boltonsquad I have a similar sounding problem.
My connection to the network is reported as excellent but randomly the actual download speed drops away to nothing.
Does yours "mend " itself after a short while and start working again...or is yours off for good. I find rebooting the laptop resolves it faster than waiting for it to do it itself...until it does it again(not good).
I use a belkin router (number can be supplied when I get home if needed) ..maybe thats the common?

Hello, I just got a new computer and I'm having internet problems. I used to use an old XP desktop with direct connection and it stayed connected, used my vista laptop with direct connection and it stayed connected, and now with my new W7 desktop the internet does not stay connected. It just disconnects and reconnects in a split second. This interferes while I'm playing games (3 different games), it'll tell me I have lost connection, and when I check my internet connection it says I'm connected. Sometimes I see the little internet connection icon on the bottom say X then a little loading circle then back online in a second. It interferes when I'm streaming also. It happens every 10-30 min or so and it gets REALLY annoying. Anybody have similar problems? Any way to fix?

I updated the router firmware and it would fix it temporarily, but after a day it started again.

When I turn on the Internet (I have a modem), it works fine until I turn other programs on then the Internet basically turns off, but the computer says I'm still connected to the Internet. Why is this doing this and why is the Internet turning off?

If I'm downloading something off the Internet say a game demo or a game update the Internet would just turn off like I said before and then I would have to disconnect and then reconnect and try redownloading and sometimes this works and sometimes it doesn't.

I found a pattern or it's just coincidence, but when the downloading box isn't the main thing selected for a while the Internet turns off. Someone please help and don't tell me to ask my ISP he's the other word for donkey.

Hi,

First welcome to TSF!!!

Next I would try a couple of things. Start off with a power cycle of your equipment, and see if that helps. Next you would need to narrow it down to what is causing the problem. Does it only happen when you are using chrome or does it happen with other browsers, more to the point does it happen with other programs that use the internet like email, instant messaging, etc. Are you running any programs that allow you to torrent, that can cause issues with your connection.

Cheers!

Hi theriffs1

I have Verizon DSL also, I was receiving the Pop up ballon: An network cable has been unplugged about every hour.

I would need to physically reseat the ethernet cable, (are you using an ethernet connection or a USB connection?), finally I purchased a new ethernet cable and that problem went away.

I did call Verizon, they have a free upgrade from 1.5mb/368kbps to 3.0mb/768kbps, it was offered to me without my asking.

Have you tried an ipconfig/release, ipconfig/renew from a command window?

Start > Run
key in:
cmd /k ipconfig
Click: Enter
The information appearing will show you what your IP address is, and how long before it expires.
My IP address renews itself every 15 minutes.

At a command prompt in the same command window key in:
ipconfig/release
Enter
Then key in:
ipconfig/renew
Enter
Your IP address should be renewed.

Have you had any viruses that may have corrupted your Winsock?

Let us know if this makes a difference or not, and if you don't have the upgrade yet, call Verizon and get it!

If you're using a laptop or server, the network card may be configured to go into power saving mode releasing the IP address after a set amount of time of non-activity.

Which version of Windows Vista are you using? Vista is known to have plenty of networking issues on it's own so it may be worth searching Microsoft's KB (Knowledge Base) at www.microsoft.com if you're familiar with it.

Also your computer system mentions a Dell E-520 which appears to be a standard desktop PC, would you be able to confirm this?

Finally, if you could post the results of an "ipconfig /all" while the network is connected and then when it becomes unavailable, this would help troubleshoot the problem.

Roden

Hi, You might have another wifi signal very close to your house that is on 'your' channel, it happens.
You can only move your channel to one of three different frequencies, that is the lowest, the middle or the highest one. So say your current channel is 6, there is no point going to 7, it's still too close.
If the 'other' problem wifi channel near you is say '1' then you should try to go to the other end of the range.
You change your WiFi channel in your router, then your laptop will find it.
You don't need a website to do that, it's between your laptop and your router.
You make the changes through any web browser, and the details will probably be on the label of your router.
But this might not the problem, although it's a fairly easy one to 'fix' if it is.

But now Ive realised, that whenever I try to download a large file which takes several minutes, my computer will disconnect from the router and I have to let windows do its thing and it says its "Resetting Network card" After this I have to reboot the PC and yet again let windows do its thing where it tells me to let it reactivate my network card. When Ive done this Ill be connected to the internet again. Ive tried to let my PC run for several hours just to make sure its not random dc's but within 5 mins of me starting a download it dc's. I can browse around just fine and have tried countless of different solutions around the web and none have helped so far. Now I beg you to give me Every single possible solution that you guys can think of. Keep in mind that I have another PC running vista connected to the router and that one works just fine, and I never had this problem on XP.
Also please keep in mind that Im not all that techie when it comes to router settings and such, so keep it simple for the sake of my brain not overheating!

Thanks in advance.

Sounds like a network driver problem but I don't see any network driver downloads fro Windows 7 X86 or X64 on the ASUS site for the Gigabit network device.

As a test, remove the router from the setup and connect directly to the broadband modem. Try a download and see what happens. If it fails the same way then the router is definitely involved. If it doesn't fail then try swapping the port and cable the router is connected to with the one currently in use by the Vista computer then try the test again.

If it works then it is either the Ethernet cable or some problem with that specific port on the router. If it doesn't make any difference, then try deleting the Gigabit network device from Device Manager as follows:

Press WinKey+R to open a Run box.
Type devmgmt.msc and press Enter
Expand Network Adapters
Right click on the Gigabit device and select Uninstall
Reboot and wait while Windows 7 rediscovers the device and reloads the driver, see if that helps.

So I have an Actiontec C1000A modem from centurylink, it is a modem and a router at the same time. We had the internet installed about 3-4 months ago. I have DSL internet with speeds up to 10 mbps. We usually have about 3-4 connections to the router with laptops and phones and ipads. My connection is the only one who that plays games though. Lately in the past month the router will lose connection to the internet for about a minute then reconnects. It's really aggravating when trying to play games then have to start over what i was doing because I got disconnected from my game, I have lost countless hours of game play. Does anyone know what this issue may be? Could it be the too many connections? I have tried turning them off but every now and then it still may do it. Hey all, First time poster on these forums. I was hoping to get new insight as to what might be causing the issues I'm having.

About a couple weeks ago I started to experience some internet troubles. It would be every 10 minutes, or every couple hours but I would get disconnect from the internet.

To start with the tray icon, it would mostly show the triangle over the symbol when this happens, yet sometimes it would say it was connected perfectly fine. In both circumstances, during these periods it would not be able to connect to the internet.

On my network, maximum of three of us, I am the only one that is hardwired in to the router with an Ethernet cord. The other two are wireless. We had gotten a new router from Bright House, a Ubee modem/router, and were not satisfied at all when this started happening. We purchased a new router to get gigabit Ethernet ports, and to give us 5GHZ wireless channels. After installing the new router, and setting the UBEE to bridge mode, the problem persisted. When the UBEE is in bridge mode though, and I connect directly to the modem I haven't noticed the problem. Although I have never been directly connected to the modem for any extended period of time.

I have seriously tried every solution that threads have offered saying that it may be a windows 7 problem, and none seemed to do the trick. So I am finally trying to reach out to you guys to hopefully receive some help. I have tried calling Bright House and they sent ... Read more

A:Everyone randomly disconnects from Internet

The problem lies somewhere in between your ISP and PCs.

Is this how your routers are connected?
ISP ----- Ubee wireless modem/router (bridge mode) ---- 2nd wireless router

Make sure you only have one dhcp server and the routers are not operating in the same channel. You can disable the firewall of your 2nd wireless router keep the firewall on on your modem/router. You dont need to use DMZ unless you are hosting some service to be accessed through the internet.

Hi,

I have just restored my XP system to SP2 after a problem with the USB controller. That fixed, Windows decided to update to SP3 which went ahead with no problems.

Now, though, my internet connection (wired LAN) keeps dropping after about 10 minutes. The only way to get it back is to restart. I have installed the latest network card drivers, but still get "internet explorer cannot display the webpage". I have tried with IE 7 and Safari 3. Renewing the DHCP lease and/or setting the DNS to a manual address do not solve the issue either.

I can still ping hosts on my local network and on the internet like Google, Apple etc and get a full set of replies. However, when i try to ping this machine from another on my network, it fails.

Even though my connection is apparently not there, the LAN status icon says it is still connected. Repairing the connection doesn't affect it.

Any ideas would be appreciated.
