Slow XP, slow startup, and problems with Internet Explorer

Q: Slow XP, slow startup, and problems with Internet Explorer

My computer has been slow lately. It lags and I figure I have spyware and such on it. I have ZeroAds, The Ultimate Troubleshooter, Norton System Works, and Norton Antivirus. It's a little quicker since I installed and updated these, but still not much better. I wasn't sure if these programs got rid of spyware or anything or if I should try some different software. Also, I wasn't sure if having all these programs to try and clean up my computer would counteract eachother and slow down my computer. Also, the time it takes to boot up my computer is a lot longer than it ever has been. Finally, my Internet Explorer doesn't work right. If I use AOL, the internet usually works right, but when I try Internet Explorer (because I don't have AOL at school), I get tons of popups even though I have ZeroAds and then Explorer just freezes and eventually I have to CTRL ALT DELETE it. If anyone knows how to help me it'd be greatly appreciated.

Preferred Solution: Slow XP, slow startup, and problems with Internet Explorer

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Use Ad Aware (http://www.ad-aware.com) and Spybot S&D (http://www.safer-networking.org/en/index.html). Make sure you update them with their update feature.

When Computer restarts, everything freezes when loading back up again. Takes almost 15mins for start up. Also, Internet explorer freezes periodically. I have a Dell XPS with upgrades to most hardware for gaming. This started when using MindCraft Beta version prior to full version launch.

Thanks.

Hello,

I have for the last few weeks, experienced an exceptionally slow startup for internet explorer and media player. When I try to start explorer, it freezes for about one minute before you can click on any links on the page. It also does this when a new window or tab is opened. Once the page has opened and the approx. minute lag has passed, it functions normally and I can browse the web. Clicking on any link which opens a new window will again cause this lag, but only on the new page. I can click back to the already opened page and browse normally. I have upgraded to IE 7 but the problem is the same.

For Windows Media player, a movie will open but no controls become available for about 30 seconds. Once the controls are available, it functions normally. If I leave the program open, I can click on different movies and they will pop up and function normally without the lag which is present on the initial startup of the program.

In addition, my on-screen ibm controls for volume have ceased to be displayed and my touchpad/trackpoint won't retain changes made so that only the trackpoint is on, with the touchpad off. It reverts back to certain settings upon computer restart.

I have run Norton, Adaware, cwshredder, AVG, ATF cleaner, Ewido, Kaspersky, Panda, fixwareout, vundofix, registry cleaner, and many others including the ones listed in the preparation section of this site, but the problem persists. A few weeks ago, I would get the occasional pop-up from... Read more

Hi Tom and welcome to TSF.

My name is Iain and I will be helping you clean your system.

There's nothing showing in your log, so let's try an online scan. Could be more of a Windows problem.

Perform an online scan with Internet Explorer with Panda ActiveScan Click on located at the bottom of the page.
A "pop up" window will appear. * Please ensure that your pop up blocker doesn't block it *
Enter your e-mail address, country, and state & click "Free Online Scan" *The download of the 8 MB Panda's ActiveX control will take place*
Begin the scan by selecting If it finds any malware, it will offer you a report.
Please ignore any entry it finds and the offer to buy the program to remove the entry, as we will address this later.
Click on then click
* You needn't remain online while it's doing the scan but you have to re-connect after it has finished to see the report.
* Turn off the real time scanner of any existing antivirus program while performing the online scan

Post back the Panda log.

A:Problems With My Pc Going Slow And Internet Explorer

Use the application to quarantine all that it has found. All but the first instance appear to be tracking cookies which, while not something one wants, are not that harmful.
A sluggish computer may be caused by other things than malware. Have you performed maintenance on your computer recently? (cleaned unneeded files, reviewed applications that launch on start up, run checkdisk and defragmented your hard drive).

Hi,
This is my first post here, so I hope that I follow all of the rules. And thanks in advance for any help. My computer has been running slow for a while, and I think one of my kids might have gone to a website that allowed some malware in. My OS is Windows XP SP3. I have noticed a few things, 1. Had a problem with Adobe acrobat reader, it wouldn't update for some reason, and couldn't open PDF files for a while, after uninstalling and reinstalling several times, I think it is now working. Also noticed more recently when working in MS Word 03 every once in a while it won't let me save files. Now I am noticing that when I have Internet Explorer open for a while, IE tries to pop open a new window, to which the IP address is blocked by K9 web protection 91.212.226.6 is the IP. After googling this IP address, I found a few posts leading me to think there might be a trojan kicking around on my pc. I have run MBAM and Hijackthis in an attempt to find the culprit, but MBAM comes up clean, and I can't find it on Hijackthis. Any help woould be appreciated.
Thanks!

Hello Techspot!!!!

I have had my laptop for nearly 3 years but I wouldn't deem it to be a poor performance laptop. Recently I have been getting slow internet, poor keyboard response and slow scrolling, and it is very frustrating!!! I share the BT 3 homehub with good connection speed which was checked and found fine! My housemates laptop has started having the same problem as mine and I really want to fix this issue. The internet, keyboard and scrolling speeds vary everyday but overall are slow performers. I have looked through some of the threads and have seen people posting long threads of code etc :/ Is there anyone out there who has the time and patience to help me fix this problem? It would be most appreciated!!!

Many Thanks

Dan

Hi, i am new at this, so bear with me lol

We have just moved our XP computer into the living room, and connected it to a 58kb dial-up connection. We installed AVG 8 and everything was running fine

Now we've installed Windows Live OneCare Family safety on the machine so we can monitor my borther and sisters internet usage.

Now, the computer runs extremely slowely, Windows Explorer continually crashes, meaning we have great difficulty opening My Documents, and My Computer or anything that requires Explorer to open

As well as this, now the internet is majorly slow... even for bloomin dial-up, we used to get at least 9kbps, but now its shot down to between 2.5 and 1.5 kbps

AVG is now continuously scanning... even outside of scheduled scans, and constantly wants to update :S

And finally, i have now noticed that small files i dont use very frequently have begun to dissapear from the system!!! music files, images, word docs etc.

We have tried defragging it, scandisk, using AdAware SE Personal 2005, AVG Scans, and they all come up with negligeable results.

As well as this, now the pc wont install files for Trend Micro Online scans to run... so we cant even work it out that way :S

I have a suspicion this could be something to do with OneCare, or Multiple Viruses in the system that have somehow hidden themselves from AVG

PLEASE PLEASE HELP!!!

Hi guys, there's this problem I've been having lately and I can't seem to get a grasp of it. Normally my computer would start up very fast(once I logged in, it would have everything ready in under a minute) but as of recently, once I log in, all the process will run(I can open up task manager and watch everything running) but explorer will not boot for like 3 minutes. I only have 4 programs run on startup: Zonealarm, rainmeter, rocketdock, and msn and all antivirus scans show nothing, so anyone know what could be causing it to go so slow?

My problems are my pc is ridiculously slow - this includes web browsing and just generally doing anything on here; super-slow startups and shutdowns. I ran pc-cillin, no viruses or malware; ran lavasoft, had a couple of cookies I removed; spybot picked up nothing; panda picked up 3 instances of spyware but I didn't know what to do about it as it wanted me to buy it to remove them and I couldn't tell where they originated; etrust online scanner picked up nothing; windows defender picked up nothing. Hi there

I have XP sp2 and recently started observing slow system startup, slow application start up, slow system shut down and many times my video becomes very slow to refresh when running IE and any other application at the sametime. Almost seems like video memory is not being swapped correctly or maybe something I'm not aware of is running the the background stealing system resources.
I can see that I have many instances of SVCHOST running when opening the TaskManager.
I have run CCleaner and optimized the HD. Not sure where to go from here. I have also shut down/disabled most programs on startup.

Thanks for your help

Hi all.
My problem is that when my computer starts windows explorer freezes and my background turns white. I have to manually close explorer through task manager, by deleting the process, and then starting explorer again. In the first few minutes when started, my computer is acting really slow.

I am unable to do system restore to an earlier point (it says an error happened and it was unsuccessful). I have run kaspersky to delete virus, but that didn't help. I recently installed a program called SpeedFan. I uninstalled that, but it didn't solve the problem.

I'm running out of ideas on what to do, to fix this problem. I would like to avoid a full system recovery..

Is this a problem seen before? Could anyone help ?

Hello,my name is Will (William). I'm very new here(joined when this problem started occuring). I have a 1 year old computer with a serious issue on it. Since a windows update 5-6 days ago my computer is extremely slow in normal mode. First it just crashed all the time. I couldn't shut it down the normal way so I had to press the power button. Since I'm a quite impatient person I restarted it several times resulting in the same thing, Windows crashing. Realising that I had other things to do I left my computer for a while.

A few hours later I tried again. This time it worked. The computer was slower than usual at the start and I had to leave it working a while before a I could use it. But right after that I ran a scan. In both Microsoft Security Essentials and avast Antivirus. Microsoft Security Essentials found a virus. I think it was located somwhere in Win32. It deleted it automatically.

After that I was away for a few days but when I came back home it was even slower. Now it can't even load the desktop normally. Sometimes it shows all the icons, but nothing will open and windows crashes when I'm trying. Soetimes the icons doesn't load properly.
Weirdly enough safe mode works perfectly fine. I'm writing this thread in safe mode with network. I have opened my computer and blown away dust and such thinking that might cause some minor problems. Nothing happened.

Now I'm browsing for solutions to the problem. sfc /verifyonly finds nothing and neither does sfc ... Read more

While navigation on Internet Explorer or Google Chrome, system runs extrememly slow and/or crashes. When using applications such as Itunes, Email, or simply opening up Word and other applications, it runs very slow and almost seems to stop. The IE7 that was on the computer had changed to an operate with add-ons off as a result of the infection. I downloaded and reinstalled IE7 and this seems to have fixed that problem for the time being. MalwareBytes and SuperAntiSpy icons dissappeared from my desktop. When trying to use them from the Start / Menu options the programs no longer worked. I reinstalled them and they appear to work fine now. However, the system still seems to run very slow over all and its performance is greatly hindered.

Next, I ran free version of SuperAntiSpyware and all it detected was a couple Adware cookies. Secondly, I ran free version of Malware Bytes Anti-Malware and it detected PUP.GamePlayLab infections located in the Registry Key: HKLM\SOFTGWARE\Microsoft\Windows.... These files were removed and quarantined by MWB. Thirdly, I ran Old Timer's TFC and then rebooted the computer and it appeared to run a little faster, but still sluggish while using IE7. I went to my computer today, and it froze up. On attempt to open task manager, I got the blue screen and shut it down. When I started it up again, it took close to 45 minutes to an hour for it to start up fully. Explorer.exe brought up error messages constantly, then I also got a few from adobe, WerFault, and several AVG messages. Its finally up and running, and I was able to access the internet. I'm currently running a malware scan, but I doubt it will fix very much. I'm literally afraid to restart my computer again.

Ideas?
Thanks.

A:Extremely slow startup, explorer.exe running slowly and crashing

Yes, first as you state don't shut it down. Leaving it run won't hurt it, just shut off your monitor when you are finished for the evening.

Second, have you done any recent updating of drivers, etc.? If I read you correctly this is the first time this has happened, right?

How to find and post your Minidump Files:

My Computer > C Drive > Windows Folder > Minidump Folder > Minidump Files.

It is these files that we need (not the folder). Attach to your next post the five most recent dumps. Notice the Manage Attachments button at the bottom when you go to post the next time. You can Zip up to five files per Zip; if you only have one or two you don?t need to zip them, just attach as is. Please do us a favor and don?t Zip each one individually.

This has been going on for a while. I've done extensive search for this particular problem but have not come across anything like it. Can someone please help me trouble shoot? I think this problem would be quite interesting to get to the bottom of.

My specs are XP SP3 on a HP 6730b Laptop. I'm checking the other specs atm and just noticed another symptom. When I go to sys properties > general, where there would usually be the comp details, there is nothing showing for a few minutes. Now that it's loaded, I see that it is a P8400, 2.93(4)GB RAM. I'm running AVG, Ad-Aware and Spybot, all running scans throughout the day.

The first noticeable symptom is during the login screen. If I click the user and enter the password within 20 secs, there's no issue. After that time, it takes about 15 mins to bring up the password field after clicking the user.

Once the logged in startup begins, all the auto load programs are loaded very promptly. Though anything explorer related (start, explorer, taskbar) takes a long time to respond. Every other program is fine while these things are delayed. It's just a matter of getting to the other programs without explorer functionality.

Also, this is probably the biggest issue, task manager is totally non responsive. It will load after a min but does not respond. I have Google Desktop which has a resource monitor widget and I can see that there is very little load on the comp during all of this (I've tried dese... Read more

I have been recently experiencing problems with slow computer start up, it used to load up really fast but now it takes 5 minutes at least until the whole thing is ready to use. Also, when playing music and then opening another application of any kind on the computer at the same time the music slows down or fades and the whole computer goes slow. I have adaware checked it, spyware checked it, defragmented it and cleaned the registry but it is making no difference at all.

The computer is an AMD Athlon(ym) XP 2700+
2.6 GHz, 512 MB of RAM

Also I am only using 13.6GB of the 37.2 GB space there is on the C Drive.

A few months back there was a virus on the computer and no firewall for a short space of time but there is now a firewall and virus checks are constantly run as well as spyware and defragmenting.

I'm not that clued up on computers as most of you will be and so would be greatful of any advice, but I dont want to risk losing anything on my computer as its very important stuff and I need this computer for work!!

Thanks for any help. Sara

What spyware programs do you use?
Have you run Error-checking, and Defragmented lately?
Also remove any programs from running at startup, that aren't absolutely necessary,

Hey!
I've been using windows 7 ultimate for several times now...
Yesterday my hard disc's cable was loosen, so windows didnt work properly.
I ran all startup repair tools - nothing worked. the computer didn't come up.
my friend told me it might be that my cables are loosen, so i looked and there it was!
since then, every single boot is extremely slow, the windows sign is shimmering for 2 minutes, the windows is freezing, when I hit menu, it loads for a minute etc. I should mention that several minutes(10 minutes) after startup, the computer works properly.
I have use in my computer for 30 minutes during morning. That kind of startup would be unbearable.

How can I fix the problem?

Hey,About a week ago, I noticed quite suddenly in fact, that windows explorer was not starting normally when the computer started. I opened task manager and it showed explorer.exe already running. One of my friends suggested to try and end rundll.exe and when I did that my taskbar and icons appeared immediately. Also, the PC has been very slow lately and also freezing every now and then. I ran TrendMicro virus scanner, AVG free and also Spyware Doctor and found nothing much. I finally decided to download HijackThis and post a log file here. The log file generated has been attached.

Hello and and Welcome to BleepingcomputerPlease note we are very busy, so if I don't hear from you within 5 days the topic will be closed, If you have since resolvedyour issues I would appreciate if you would let me no so I can close this topic.I do not recommend that you have more than one anti virus product installed and running on your computer at a time. The reason for this is that if both products have their automatic (Real-Time) protection switched on, then those products which do not encrypt the virus strings within them can cause other anti virus products to cause "false alarms". It can also lead to a clash as both products fight for access to files which are opened again this is the resident/automatic protection. In general terms, the two programs may conflict and cause:1) False Alarms: When the anti virus software tells you that your PC has a virus when it actually doesn't.2) System Performance Problems: Your system may lock up due to both products attempting to access the same file at the same time. Therefore please go to add/remove in the control panel and remove either Trend Micro or AVG9.Download random's system information tool (RSIT) by random/random from here and save it to your desktop.Double click on RSIT.exe to run RSIT.Click Continue at the disclaimer screen.Once it has finished, two logs will open. Please post the contents of both log.txt (<Read more

Hi. I can't remember exactly when it started, but recently my internet has been very slow starting up, sometimes exceeding 10 minutes. It usually takes a while after clicking before anything happens, and once the IE window appears it'll be blank and unresponsive for another minute or two before it becomes useable. With Firefox the problem isn't quite as bad, but it does seem to take longer than it should most of the time.

I read some people were able to fix a slow internet startup problem by uninstalling the google toolbar, but that didn't seem to do much for me. I currently have Spybot, Spyware Guard, and Ad-Aware running on my system along with a version of Norton Antivirus and thought having multiple anti-virus/spyware apps might be causing the problem, but I've tried testing it with them off and the situation didn't seem to improve. (On a side note, is it a bad idea to have multiple programs of this type running simultaneously, and if so, which one should I use?)

I'm not sure, but it doesn't appear to be a spyware problem because the scans I've done have come back empty or nearly so and the programs haven't had trouble deleting the few detected objects. I don't know if it's linked or not, but the task manager always shows two iexplore.exe processes per window open, and occasionally two windows will appear after the long wait even though I only click the shortcut icon once.

Any help would be appreciated, and I was wonderin... Read more

So yesterday I was on my laptop and everything was fine. I went to open a minimized firefox browser and everything got really slow. After I finally got the all of the tabs and the browser closed things were still not right. I restarted. After that I opened firefox and closed it. I reopened and it said it was already running. I waited a few seconds and got the same message. I opened up task manager and it was still running. The computer was still slow so I decided to do a system restore to 11/1. When it restarted after doing the restore I got a black screen with the mouse pointer. The activity light wasn't flashing so I opened up task manager and shut it down. I restarted and it was really slow to start up. Now, everything worked except windows explorer was slow to respond and would take much longer to open than normal. (Libraries button on quick launch). I did a sfc /scannow and found nothing. Next, I backed up and ran avast, superantispyware, and malwarebytes and found nothing all on full scan. When I ran malwarebytes I was in safe mode and windows explorer still didn't come up like it should in safe mode. So I did another system restore to 10/26 and it hung at the black screen again but I let it sit for about 10 minutes and it finally came up (this time with a box saying it was successfully restored). Still have slow start up although that was when system res... Read more

HI. I'm using a vista home basic laptop, and have objectdock, AVG free and Spybot as my preferred background utilities.

However, it's taking my computer more than 6 minutes to startup... is there any utility to SAFELY check and remove any erroneous startup entries that might be slowing down my laptop?

Also, for some particular reason, Spybot keep repeating the same three notifications every startup- something about NeroFilterCheck. The messages just tell me that Spybot has allowed the change of the programs based on my white list- my problem with this is, this notification usually happens only once after I've allowed a change. This three notifications show up every time I start up- is this a bug? or does it mean that changed values are part of the startup ang are changed everytime?

One more gripe- I uninstalled Nero 8 essentials and opted for Nero Micro (didn't need all those software utils), but whenever I see the autoplay dialog box, there are still some options about opening the DVD or Audio cd with Nero Showtime (one of the those utilities that Nero Essentials had but Nero Micro doesn't have, thank God).

Hi

I have a fairly new (January) Windows 7 Ultra Mobile laptop, with 3GB memory and an Intel Pentium processor. The model is a Toshiba T110-107

I have noticed for a while that start up times are extremely slow, and can take 10-15 minutes before I can use the computer. I have cleaned the registry with CCleaner, removed unnecessary start up programs, defragmented the hard drive and other tune up's using Advanced System Care Pro. I have scanned for viruses using Norton 360, malwarebytes anti malware and Trend Micro house call with clear results.

Also, when I shut down my computer more often than not I will get a window alerting me the programs are still running and asking if I want to force shutdown. The thing is, normally when this message is displayed it shows what programs are running, but it is just blank in my case. I'll post a screenshot if I can.

I really don't know what to try next

I'd appreciate your help

Thanks

A:EXTREMELY slow startup problems

Bleeping Computer DOES NOT recommend the use of registry cleaners/optimizers for several reasons:? Registry cleaners are extremely powerful applications that can damage the registry by using aggressive cleaning routines and cause your computer to become unbootable. The Windows registry is a central repository (database) for storing configuration data, user settings and machine-dependent settings, and options for the operating system. It contains information and settings for all hardware, software, users, and preferences. Whenever a user makes changes to settings, file associations, system policies, or installed software, the changes are reflected and stored in this repository. The registry is a crucial component because it is where Windows "remembers" all this information, how it works together, how Windows boots the system and what files it uses when it does. The registry is also a vulnerable subsystem, in that relatively small changes done incorrectly can render the system inoperable. For a more detailed explanation, read Understanding The Registry.? Not all registry cleaners are created equal. There are a number of them available but they do not all work entirely the same way. Each vendor uses different criteria as to what constitutes a "bad entry". One cleaner may find entries on your system that will not cause problems when removed, another may not find the same entries, and still another may want to remove entries required for a program to work.? A:Solved: Slow startup and other problems

First off, let's try and deal with your slow startup and working speeds.

Try and see if there are any programs you can remove from the Start Up list, as this is one of the worst ways of slowing down your computer. When your computer turns on, it instantly wants to start loading a number of applications at once while in its booting process. To do this go to Start, All Programs, Look for Startup and remove appropriate applications.

Hold down the Windows Key and R. Type the following and press Enter: appwiz.cpl. Go thorugh the list and remove and software that you very rarely use or you don't need or use any longer, and you know they are not used by other applications. It's best you leave applications such as Adobe Acrobat Reader, Java and QuickTime installed (if already installed). Don't remove anything that you do not know or that you continue to use.

Try deleting files which you no longer need or try a Disk Defragmentation. However, please be careful and do not delete anything or change any settings that you do not know about.

Good luck
