Pulling the Plug on Windows Vista

Q: Pulling the Plug on Windows Vista

Say I buy a computer package form Cirucit City with a Compaq SR5050NX computer that I return yesterday (mentioned in my last post). The system has windows Vista on the SATA hard drive. I set up that system and then make a backup disk. The I disconnect the orginal SATA hard drive with Vista on it and install my two EIDE drives in the computer. Then I install XP and then install my second data hard drive. I use that sytem for a year or more. After a period of time I decide to try Vista. I diconnect the IDE drives and then install the orginal SAtA drive with Win Vista. I don't think that would violate any copywrite rules. Would Windows Vista work or would I have to try to activiate windows VISTA again (ie if that is possable??).
Would Vista work after its hard drive has been disconnected for a period of time?? Not having my old software not running on Vista is a big issue.

I have looked at some tigerdirect barebones systems but I don't think it matches
the Circuit City package deal and all of its extras. Can any make any suggestions on this
thank you,

Preferred Solution: Pulling the Plug on Windows Vista

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

No reason that should not work. If for any reason it would not activate, then do it by telephone is all.

Last night in a sleepy stupor I unplugged my Hp pavilion without shutting it down usually no problem right? This morning I tried starting it up and got a flashing green light on the back of psu. It doesn't go away until after about 2 minutes of it being unplugged. If I plug in the PSU without the mobo cord plugged in the light is a steady light like everything is working. Someone told me to take an eletrical wire and put on end into a black psu wire and the other into the green mobo connector wire.(terminated wire into terminator) Does anyone have any other advice it's really my friends computer and I was wondering if there's a fix or do I have to shell out for a new psu.

Of course, the fix would depend on what is actually wrong the PC. It could be the power supply but my money is on a fried motherboard.

Microsoft is pulling the plug on Internet Explorer 8, 9, and 10 next Tuesday

Microsoft is ending support for Internet Explorer 8, 9, and 10 next week on January 12th, releasing a final patch encouraging users to upgrade to one of the company's more recent browsers. The end of support means that these older versions of Internet Explorer will no longer receive security updates or technical support, making anyone who uses them much more vulnerable to hackers. A recently-announced patch will deliver the last few bug fixes, as well as an "End of Life" notification telling users to upgrade to IE 11 or Microsoft Edge ? the company's successor to Internet Explorer, built for Windows 10.

This move has a been a long time coming, with Microsoft announcing the end of support for IE 8, 9, and 10 back in August 2014. And in March last year, the company relegated IE to "legacy" status, meaning that the browser will be kept around mostly for the sake of enterprise compatibility. Despite this, though, there are still thought to be several hundred million users using soon-to-be-obsolete versions of Internet Explorer. Those users are about to become a security risk, so Microsoft must be hoping that its "End of Life" warning encourages at least few million to upgrade. Then again, they might just switch to another browser altogether.

It happened yesterday night. My USB mouse sometimes stops working, and I see USB device not recognized. Searching on google showed me to take AC plug off when computer is off, I have a laptop and took the power off, and the battery, and let it sit for about 30 minutes. It worked the first time. However, today morning after using it for a while it happened again. I tried the same thing and fixed it. But at evening it happened again. Is there a way to fix this?

Hi everyone,

I purchased a new MSI Radeon HD 7770 graphics card a few days ago and installed it into my pc.

Every time I try to complete simple tasks like, installing new software or playing games I get the same blue screen. Recently, It has started to flash before crashing, like the screen will go black, re-appear not allowing me to have any control and then it goes black again. This happens a few times until it shows the 0x116 BSOD.

It is either a blue screen or my monitor goes fuzzy and it completely freezes, forcing me to hold the power button or pulling the plug.

I've searched EVERYWHERE but I can't seem to find a suitable solution for my problem.

First, post it following the Blue Screen of Death (BSOD) Posting Instructions.

Second, stress test the Graphics Card using Furmark.

Every time my computer goes into stand-by mode, my internet goes from (Network 3 - Access: Local and Internet) to (Netowrk 2 - Access: Local).
I have to unplug my modem everytime Vista comes out of stand-by in order to connect to the internet. Why is it doing this?

A:Vista is pulling a 169

Hi. . .

Are you connected via Ethernet or wifi? Does "stand-by" = sleep?

Go into Device Manager (START | devmgmt.msc), expand the Network tree and un-install all - right-click on each, un-install. Then re-boot. Vista will re-install drivers.

I am currently running Windows Vista with 32bits. I run World of Warcraft and i am getting lag, about 9 frames per second. I want to know how to enter the BIOS on Vista and pull more memory? i have on board memory, which i know is crappy but im broke at the moment so bare with me...

You can pick up a cheap graphics card and ram at Play. If you make a mistake while changing settings in your BIOS, your computer may become unbootable, so it would be a good idea to shop around for bargains before editing BIOS settings.

I have a xp pro pc in one room, custom built in my room, and a acer desktop running vista home premium in the living room belonging to my mom. I am having a nightmare trying to set up both pcs on the same network. What I wanted to do is allow her to print on my laser printer over the network. So I enabled the printer sharing option on my pc. The laser is a new brother, and is vista compatible.

When I went into computer and device list on her computer, my pc was showing up. I tried to connect to it, and it said "cannot logon, user restriction". I did some looking and I read both computers need to have the same workgroup name, which was diffrent since vista set the default to a new name. So I set both pcs to workgroup;"workgroup" and restarted, after the reboot, it all went downhil from there. My pc is showing up in the network map on her pc, but not on the computer and device list. I can also ping my computer from her pc, but cannot ping her pc from my computer. I turned off both windows firewall and the avast! antivirus firewall, and tried to ping her pc again, this time, it seems like one or 2 packets get through, but the others time out.

I am good with computers, but networking is not my expertise.

Please help.

I need to see a gmer log in order to help you.

Download GMER Rootkit Scanner from here and Save it to your Desktop. Double-click gmer.exe to run it. If asked to allow gmer.sys driver to load, please consent.
First, gmer will run a short, initial scan.
If it gives you a warning about rootkit activity and asks if you want to run scan...click on NO.

Click the image to enlarge it
In the right panel, you will see several boxes that have been checked. Ensure the following are UNCHECKED ...IAT/EAT
Drives/Partition other than Systemdrive (typically C:\)
Show All (don't miss this one)

Then click the Scan button & wait for it to finish.
Once done click on the [Save..] button, and in the File name area, type in "Gmer.txt" or it will save as a .log file which cannot be uploaded to your post.
Save it where you can easily find it, such as your desktop, and attach it to your next reply.

Is the Integrated Audio (or may be labeled HD Audio) in the BIOS enabled?

Also, when you first installed Win 7, many motherboards require "chipset drivers" and the chipset drivers usually need to be installed BEFORE installing sound drivers. One of the main things the chipset drivers do is define (identify) all the devices on the motherboard. Basically it's (1) Install OS (2) Install chipset drivers (3) Install device drivers.

Hi Everyone,

My Win 7 Home laptop was working fine a couple days ago. Didn't do anything different, didn't download or install anything.

Last night I noticed the fan was running constantly and saw one of the svchosts (the one for windows updates, forgot the name) was consistently at 70% usage. I have updates to notify me of new updates, but let me install.

I manually clicked windows update and saw 36 updates available (no windows update shield in notification area btw). I try to install the updates but it just sits at 0% for a while then I canceled.

I try various ways to fix Windows Update, from MSfixit, various hot fixes, reset and re-register, and running a script that clears all Windows Updates.

I manually try to do Windows Updates again, shows no updates (as history was wiped) And search for updates. The blue bar runs and runs, and just keeps searching.

I ran Cccleaner, Antspyware scans, anti virus scans, spybot, and a few other stuff and still nothing. Any ideas?

So the good ole Windows Update on my laptop that I didn't need and couldn't exit from did it's thing for like two hours and of course screwed up my computer. But that's a whole other gripe unto itself. But what it did was affect my music editing program Cubase. I had to uninstall and reinstall it and a result the install won't complete itself. It starts off fine with a bunch of green bars doing their thing but then the box that says "Windows Installer......preparing to install" pops up and nothing happens. It just sits there. I've wasted a good 3 hours trying to solve this problem to no avail. If anyone can point me in the right direction it would be hugely appreciated.

Thanks -

OK, here's the deal... I've cloned the HDD onto an SSD, but I can't get it to boot.-- keep getting a notice to install the OS.  I know the clone is (should be) ok, because this is the SEVENTH SSD I've cloned over the past three weeks.  The only difference with this one is that it has the UEFI interface (with Windows 7 Pro 64-bit), and for some reason it won't recognize the OS on the SSD. The UEFI is set for: "Legacy Boot with Secure Boot disabled" (when booting either drive). The original drive is MBR.  I tried cloning the drive as MBR and GPT, but neither will boot.I tried cloning a different SSD to make sure it wasn't the SSD.I tried disabling the "UEFI Boot order"  (by unchecking it), but that didn't do anything. What I did notice was... When the original HDD is installed the UEFI BOOT MENU shows the drive in the list TWICE, once as UEFI (#2), and once as Legacy (#4) (with DVDRW as UEFI #1, and Legacy #3, then Boot from file as #5). HOWEVER, when the SSD is installed, the only option it gives me is UEFI.  If I DISABLE (uncheck the option) for the "UEFI Boot order", all it will show is the Legacy CDRW in the Boot Menu. I remembered having a similar problem with about a year ago on my own Windows 10 laptop having the same issue when installing a cloned SSD and then I was able to use the Windows Repair to fix it.  So I created a Windows 7 repair disk (CD), but it won't boot from the disk (it just comes to a blank screen--I've f... Hey all.

I can't track down the exact thing that changed, but many of my internet plug-ins (QuickTime, Silverlight, Air) won't work properly. I will install the plug-in, then when I go to a site that requires it, it says it's not installed, despite clearly being the Program registry.

When I use QuickTime, I can go to various sites that have QT movies and they load fine, but if I go to Apple.com, it says I need to grab the newest QuickTime.

Silverlight apps won't load at all.

Any time I go to Adobe's marketplace for AIR apps, despite having one running, it says that I need to install Air.

This is in both IE7 and Firefox.

Summary: Java works fine in Firefox 3, doesn't work at all in IE7.

I've installed the JRE 6u7 from Sun's webpage. At the end of the installation, I tell it to install plugins for both IE and Mozilla (checking the Java Control Panel later verifies that both browsers are checked). Applets work in Firefox, but in IE they don't appear (I get the red X icon). When I open up Tools/Internet Options and go to the Advanced tab, there are no Java-related options, which I believe are supposed to be there after I install the JRE.

Also, isn't the Java folder supposed to be added to my system PATH? When I open a command window and type "java" I get a "not recognized as a command etc" error. I wouldn't be surprised if UAC (which I have in "quiet mode" using TweakUAC, never had issues w/ that before though) is having some kind of hissy-fit and keeping the installer from doing what it needs to do. So, if that's the case, what do I do about it?

A:IE7 won't recognize Java plug-in on Vista x64

When you click tools, internet options, programs tab, and click manage add-ons, do you see the java plug-in listed anywhere in there?
BTW do you get a choice between Internet Explorer 64-bit and Internet Explorer 32-bit? I think Java is for the 32-bit version only (I could be wrong though)

This issue is so simplistic.. I shouldn't even have to be posting about it. Unfortunately, it's a little too frustrating to dwell upon, so I'll seek the words of others.

I plug in my EP Surfboard 4.0gb USB flash drive, and immediately I get a prompt to install software. This device is USB plug and play. It works fine on my laptop [XP Pro]; it just pops right up. Why am I getting this prompt? I also have a 512mb drive that I use on both computers, and it pops up fine.

Vista searches my computer, and searches online, and still can't find the driver, named "USB Mass Storage Device".. I already have external HDD disks and other "mass storage" running off this desktop PC, so why does Vista suddenly need software for this measly flash drive? It won't even assign it a drive letter until it gets some sort of software.

I tried using the driver in my \Windows\System32\Drivers folder, but it says there are no suitable drivers..

A friend handed me his computer (Vista Home Premium on a Dell Inspiron 530s) because of some spyware trouble. I've done the usual stuff, but I haven't gotten rid of everything. So far, I ran malwarebytes, spybot, and an Avast boot-time scan.

The DCOM and Plug and Play services crash every now and then, which forces the machine into a reboot. I tried to install Vista SP2, but it resulted in a "Configuring Updates" screen which causes the machine to restart and loop endlessly (I was able to recover by replacing some registry files and deleting c:\windows\winsxs\pending.xml). I believe Google searches still result in being redirected to ad sites, but I haven't seen this in the last day or so.

I've also had to deal with a STOP 7B blue screen error (recovered by fixing registry files), though I do not know if this is related.

Hi all, Some time ago my Ideapad U530 Touch fell from my desk. It hit perfectly on the ac power supply plug-in and it broke the male connector on the cord and it appears that the female connector on the laptop is damaged as well. The pictures attached are the best I could do. The plug on the laptop may or may not be ruined, I'm not sure but I think I remember a small metallic part that broke off of it. The "damage" that is visible in the pictures looks to me like just scratches on the paint/color but I'm not sure.  Like I said this was a while ago and I'm just now getting around to fix it. I was looking for parts just now, first for the cord to see if that would be all that I needed, but I was also looking for a schematic to find the part on the laptop and to see if it was a part of the motherboard so I could have an idea of what this was going to cost me. I discovered that there is no schematic (that I could find.) The cords offered for this laptop all had "expired" labeled on them and the cart button was greyed out and not functioning so I couldn't even price it. Can someone let me know how I might proceed with repairing my laptop? It is almost three years old. I have an external hard drive Seagate backup plus 1 tb working fine with Sony vaio E15136 win 8.1 64 bit 4gb Ram. As long as I change the power supply i.e either plug in or plug out the power supply of my laptop, external drive is re-detected.
The external drive draws power from laptop. No external power source.
In case of USB pen drives this thing didn't happen.

I have an almost fresh install of xp on my desktop and want to avoid cluttering the hard drive with stuff to slow it down. One of the things I have noticed is that media players seem to reproduce like rabbits...media player comes with windows...then some website will say that it can't live without having real player installed...and then another one...my favorite is VLC...and of course, itunes....

I noticed that there is a plug-in to make Firefox work with VLC I think there are also other plug-ins for other media players as well. What exactly do these things do? If I have the plug-in do I have to install the software? Do they improve the ease of use of the media player? the quality of the sound? do they reduce the cpu load?

A:[SOLVED] Plug it in, plug it in...and media players

Media plugins allow the browser to play audio and video files in different formats on websites.

They are not all in use at the same time (just called on when needed by a website's embedded media player), so they don't slow down your computer or fill up your hard drive.

I have desktop computers in 2 remote sites, that were all from the same image.  The image was made at the regional headquarters.  Both sites have a wsus mirror server on site that they are reporting to, but they are usually (not always) pulling
their updates via branchcache from a non wsus server at the regional headquarters (and eating up a lot of bandwidth).  Computers not made from this image do not have this issue.

I've already tried doing a 'netsh branchcache reset' on all the desktops with this image, but it has not had any effect.

-any other commands I can run on the desktops or the non-wsus server that would fix this?

In fact, when I push it into place, it barely makes contact and if I move it ever so slightly, the picture on the other monitor begins to flicker. Is there an adapter or something that I can use?

Yesterday when I turned on my computer I received a message inviting me to install a new update to Java (Version 7 Update 25). After doing a precautionary search via Google that this was a legitimate update, I proceeded with the installation process. At the time I was using the Firefox browser (although I also use IE 9). At the end of the process I received a prompt at the bottom of the Firefox browser asking me to install the Java Plug-in. I then visited the "Verify Java Version" page which confirmed that I had the recommended version of Java installed (Version 7 Update 25). As Java recommend that users should uninstall older versions of Java from their computer, I ran the Java Uninstall Tool, but that confirmed that there were no older versions of Java on my computer.

I then opened IE9 but when I went to the same web page to verify my Java version I got a pop-up message saying that"Java plug-in 10.25.2 is not installed properly. Java plug-in detected JRE collision." That was followed by a further pop-up saying "Java Plug-in Warning - Applet(s) in this HMTL page requires a version of Java different from the one the browser is currently using. In order to run the applet(s) in this HTML page a new browser session is required. Close all the Netscape browser sessions and start a new browser session to run the HTML page."

I closed IE9 and reopened it but when I visited the Java verify page I received the same error messages.

Basically, I have a HP Pavilion laptop, only 4 months old, pretty good specs, running on windows vista. At first, it was working like a dream, and I didnt believe what I was hearing about problems with vista. However, recently, I have noticed that anything I plug in2 any of the usb drives (be it ipod, external hard drive, or even a brand new printer) isnt installing. They are recognised alright, but instead of installing automatically, I am prompted for a disc, and even for things which I do have the disc (eg printer), it still does not work. Things that were used before this problem cropped up, eg another ipod, another printer, a mouse, are working fine. I have spoken to HP, Microsoft, the printer manufacturers, tech guys, everyone, and the best advice I got was to backup my data and wipe everything and start again. But seeing as I can't use an external hard drive, this could prove tedious and frustrating. I would be eternally gr8ful to any1 who could offer me anything to help me out of this bind!

So everything was working fine yesterday. Woke up today and no usb device i plugged in would be detected. The only way they work is if they are plugged in on boot, but usb hard drvies, flash drives etc do not show up once i log in.

I searched the web already and got no real answers aside from system restore, which i tried and it said it completed it successfully, but it didn't actually restore to the point i selected. Everything stayed exactly the same as it was when it stopped working.

It's to the point where I'm just about to format my hard drive and reinstall the os. But thats a last ditch effort as i will lost everything I have that is not already backed up.

Specs (custom pc)
Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit
Inter(R)Core i7 CPU
6 gig's of ram
Gigabyte GA-X58A-UD5 Rev 1 motherboard.

If any other spec's needed let me know.
Thank you in advanced for any help.

A:Nothing happens when i plug in usb device. Windows 7

With your USB device plugged in, go to Start/Search and type devmgmt.msc Right click the devmgmt results and Run As Administrator. In the Elevated Device Manager do you see any devices with yellow flags? Or under Universal Serial Bus Controllers, do you see an Unknown Device? if so, right click it and Uninstall it, remove the device from the computer end and restart the computer. Once you log in, plug in the device and you should get a new hardware found.

Approx a month ago, maybe two, I contacted HP because of a different problem (which I still don't have a solution for: Windows Explorer has stopped working....). I tried contacting HP today via online chat, but their system doesn't seem to be working, so I sent an email. Don't expect to hear back til at least Mon or Tues. So I thought I'd post this here in case someone has run into it.

So, back when I contacted them before, I beleive their "fix" was to update a driver. I don't remember which one. It did not fix the problem, but it is intermittent, so I kind of just decided to live with it.

Current Problem
For some time now, we have been watching dvd's through our notebook, on our new lcd tv. It has worked great, then suddenly it stopped working. The message on our TV says "No Signal." Strangely though, the RGB-PC input option for the tv settings is illuminated (not greyed out), so there is SOME signal, but the tv is reporting "No Signal" and we can't see the pc screen through the tv. Today on a lark, we decided to buy a new cable to see if that was the problem. It didn't fix the problem. Now i'm wondering if the port on either the pc or tv is to blame.

Could this be it? Any ideas? Has anyone had this happen? I'm sorry I can't give more information, just thought if someone had it before it might ring a bell and be a quicker fix than waiting for HP to respond to my email. Thank... Read more

CHeck if your HP laptop has a Blue "Fn" button.
Then if it does check your Function keys have a button with something relating to the display, look at F8 first, it is usually this one, but might be elsewhere on the keuboard. It could be a picture of a Screen or a word like "display" or similar.
Maybe the driver update reset your monitor settings.
The HP's that I support at work are sometimes used for meetings with presentations and the users of the laptops usually switch between the projector and laptop screen by pressing the Fn+F8(or other key) key together to switch between the settings.
Check it out on yours

My computer keeps giving me an error message that the scanner is not plugged in when I try to scan something (USB). So I unplug it and plug it right back into the same port and it works like normal. Then I'll go to do another scan not one minute later and it give me the same error message. Un-plug and re-plug and it's fine again. Then the error message... you get the idea. I have another USB port and that does the same thing.

Any ideas? Thanks!

Recently attempted to install new Canon Multifunction printer. When nearly finished with installation (after I had connected the USB plug to computer and turned on printer) the computer when black and froze. I tried a second time, same thing. Computer went black before boot up even ended. Finally discovered that I needed to unplug the printer in order to get Windows working again.

Endless call with Canon determined that my plug and play feature is not working. (We installed the printer on my 6-year old laptop without difficulty, so we know the software disk is OK.) Can't figure out how to get help from Microsoft-Windows XP - no luck with knowledge base. Can anyone give me suggestions for repairing plug and play (it was working 4 months ago) or how to speak to someone at Microsoft?

Many Thanks

Hello all,

I've recently homebuilt a beefy system, and I'm running XP Pro 64 on it.

Just today, it's started throwing out massive Plug-and-Play errors - barely anything inside Control Panel works, I can't find a service in Services that doesn't complain about Plug-and-Play not being installed, etc, etc. ("Configuration Manager: The Plug and Play service or another required service is not available.") My ATI Radeon HD 3850's drivers refuse to recognise the card, I can't plug in a USB drive and expect it to work - the system has to be booted up with pendrive already inserted to be able to read it!

Basically, what it amounts to is that the plug and play service refuses to start and, what is more, the field into which I could type the executable's path (which it seems to have forgotten) is greyed out.

Does anyone know how I might force the plug and play executable to start, or how I might restore its entry under Services in Control Panel -> Administrative Tools?

Many thanks for any help that anyone can offer.

Since I installed tvants software Windows media player was acting weird. When I restarted it crashed over and over again. I removed TVants and now WMP is working but the plug in/add on in IE7 won't load, so I can't play anything that needs WMP to run.

I'm using Vista Ultimate, IE7 and WMP11.0.6

Does someone know how to reactivate this control. In the list of add-ons it's shown as ENABLED. So I don't know what to do further.

Thank you,

Hello Andre,

TVants is a recognised P2P program, and we do not support P2P programs at TSF, under The TSF Rules that you agreed to abide by when you registered.

Here is a quote (in Part of the Rules)...

We believe that the main purpose of P2P programs is to illegally download and use copyrighted material of whatever description. We further understand that there may be legal uses for P2P, but as we are not able to assess a user's intent when he/ she asks for help, we do not support P2P software and we will not assist any user in this regard. This includes but is not limited to Bearshare, Kazaa and many others.

You need to re-read The TSF Rules here. (Click on the coloured link)

Is your USB working properly? Do other devices for USB work on that port, such as Digital Cameras?

Also, are you booting with the USB drive/IPod attached? Only put it in the USB slot after Windows loads.

If all of the above fail to work, go to Start>Run and type "sfc /scannow" w/o the quotes. This will tell you if you have any damaged Windows files, such as those that may run USB.

If that also fails, you may want to check your USB drivers. First, make sure you have the driver cd for your PC. It should say something like "Motherboard Drivers" or etc. You may also need to dl the drivers from the net. Go Start, Control Panel, System, Hardware, Device Manager. Look for any yellow symbols. Double click on them and go to driver tab. There should be an option to install/update driver. Insert driver cd or driver from the net and let it do its thing.
