Q: IE11 auto-open a downloaded file of specific type

Hello all,
im trying to make IE11 auto-open a specific file extension .tsv with a custom app we have.
currently, users need to download the file and then click open to launch the custom app (the .tsv extension is already associated with the custom app and it opens properly).

is there a way to allow a specific extension to launch an app automatically?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I'm trying to troubleshoot an issue with Internet Explorer and they way it handles opening file from the Internet. Sometimes it gives a prompt like this:

Which is great, I want to turn this on for all common document types (e.g. PDF, Word Docs, Zips). What I've found is you have to either untick the option 'Always ask before opening this type of file', or delete a registry key in
When I check my PC I find I don't have that option and the registry keys aren't present.

Could someone clarify this for me? I'm running IE11 and Windows 7.

A:Always ask before opening this type of file - IE11

In Windows 7, there is no the key AttachmentExecute by default. For this reason, Checkbox for "always ask before opening this type of file" is missing in the Download prompt window.
Actually, you can choose to add this key in your Registry by following txt, Copy them to notepad, then renamed as .reg file. After that, import to Registry.

I hope somebody can help me with hotmail.

I'm using XP SP2 with IE6.

When there is a text link on an e-mail (hotmail) page it sometimes won't open when I click on it. The green progress bar shoots quickly to the right and disappears but the screen remains the same. But sometimes on clicking a link it does go where it should.

I have noticed that the screen doesn't go anywhere when the small line of text immediately above the 'Start' button (lower left of screen) displays the following format of text when the cursor is hovering on the link itself:

However, if I copy and paste the link to the address bar of the browser and delete the javascript:0l(' section then the link will work. This is what I've been doing since I can remember.

If the small line of text above the start button has a different format to the above then the link works as it should. For example the following text format works:

Is there a solution to this? I have not installed Java into my computer and don't know whether this would solve this problem. I have looked for a Java entry in the advanced section of the IE tools tab but cannot find anything labelled 'Java'. If I do need to download Java, will it compromise security? Where do I download it from if I need it?

This has nothing to do with the firewall as I have tried disabling it and it makes no difference.

When I try to open it, I get just a very brief flash of the RealPlayer icon, then it goes

Any help much appreciated, I had quite a lot of stuff saved in it I don't want to lose.

A:Real Player downloaded some type of update now won't open

Might be something to do with the new mailbox set -up, check to see if your Anti virus is not blocking this device. 'Real Player' just send out something similar to what MSN do if your logged in to Instant Messenger and you receive an Email. You get sent a 'Pop up' and an audible notice (sound effect) of "news from Real Player" almost like a RSS feed although it's automated.

I had started a thread earlier here, called "Cannot change name of New Folder. Can't add Search Provider".

Well, I reset the system to a System Restore that was quite old, and the renaming of folders problem seems to have gone away (at least for now). However, what is really bothering me is that IE11 is keeping track of every file I open on my computer, and when I click on the entry in History, it opens the file!

I have disconnected the computer from the internet, but desperately need help in terms of what to do!!!

Hello all, today a user posed an interesting question to me:
"If this is a library, how do I set it to gather only a specific type of file?"
I thought this was a great question, so I hopped right on it.  When you make a new library, you are able to set which type of file it is optomized for, but I see no option to filter based on this.  In her case, she wanted to make a library of only
her Excel files, which could be stored in a variety of places.
At first, I Bing'd and found this link, also on the Technet Forums (Export Folder list from a Library), but ultimately found
nothing too useful there.  I eventually consulted the XML Schemas directory on the Microsoft site, and came across the

XML Schemas breakdown of the Library File type.  This too had some interesting stuff, but nothing that I was looking for.
My question is this, through registry entry, notepad file hacking or other cleverness, how does a user set a library to only have certain types of files in it?  For instance, one might want only .xlsx or .iso files in a particular folder. Currently,
adding a path will cause your library to populate with files of every type.  It is very hard to duplicate the built-in functionality of the default Pictures, Music and Video libraries.

A:Use libraries to gather only a specific type of file?

As far as I know, the library just can bring your stuff together in one place. However, it cannot specific a certain types of files. If you include a folder to library, it will show all files in this
However, you can achieve the task by copying all this type of files to one folder manually. To search doc files, type "kind:docs" without quotation in the Windows Explorer search box.
For more information about library, please refer:

Hi there!

I used many different file types each day, specially those related to image editors. I have many .psd and .ai files (documents for Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator). However, since I use other programs (GIMP and Inkscape), these files look pretty ugly. They are a white sheet of paper with low resolution GIMP/Inkscape logo. And that is awful

I think I did something with W7 like messing up with regedit in order to change that. I just want W10 to show those files with a proper icon file (.ico) I have in my computer.

Thank you very much!

I have several versions of an application (Adobe After Effects) installed (I help test out prerelease versions of the software - which is nice) and I'd like to be able to set the precise application / file type association.

If I get a file's properties and 'Change...' the 'Opens with:' and browse to the exact application I want it to open with (After Effects version 13.6x123), then Apply/OK it, when I open the file, it just loads up the oldest version of the app (After Effects version 13.2) that Windows can find. Is there a better way to set filetype associations than the broken method that Windows is clearly attempting to use?

I have four versions of this app currently installed, all in C:\Program Files\Adobe. 90% of the time, I want to use the latest version, but occasionally need to use an older (public release) version to check how certain bugs/behaviours have changed, so need to keep all those versions installed.

I can use the workaround of opening the specific app and File > opening the file from within it, but it would be nice if I could get Windows to behave properly. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

I was signing in to my Google account when suddenly my computer downloaded a file called "comments_ajax". It had a slightly modified icon, and looked a bit like the Windows icon. I want to prevent certain extensions/file types from appearing in the "recent items" list in Windows 7 64-bit professional.

I do NOT want to disable Recent items completely.

I do however want to exclude certain file types such as movies (I have playlists for that), and photos from the list.

I normally use a limited/standard account for my daily use, especially when watching movie files or looking at .JPGs. Lately .MP4 files are appearing in my recent items list again. I want to stop that.

Searching on this issue has yielded a suggestion of a program called "FileTypesMan"

However, while the .mp4 file type already has the checkbox to "don't add this type to "recent documents"" already checked, it does NOT work on my limited account, as they still appear in my "Recent Items" menu.

I solved this problem years ago, but I can't find the bookmark to how to fix it.

I think FileTypeMan fixes things for whatever user is currently using it, but it prompts for UAC elevation when you launch it, so I have to run it as an admin, not as my limited user account. How do I exclude .MP4 files from the "Recent Items" list in my limited account?

The only other thing I can find is this, which talks about an "editflags" entry that I cannot locate with RegEdit when logged in as an admin. Yet I already have some things excluded from my recent items, so how was that done?

I have Word 2002, SP3, for Windows Office XP Pro.

My problem is I want to permanently turn OFF the autocorrect options (all of them: correct initial capitals, correct first letters of days, etc etc, autoformat, as well as auto text and auto type).

Yes, I have unchecked all the boxes in Tools > Autocorrect Options, the problem is I have to painstakingly go though all the boxes every time I open Word and uncheck them. My setups are not remembered.

I can't figure out how to make these options stay set this way.

I've tried installing the Office Resource Kit and setting a system policy (though I am the only user on this PC), but no success.

I had to rebuild my system a month ago -- before that, I never had any problems, Word seemed to remember exactly my preferred set up and saved autocorrect options etc to the normal template.

I checked the normal template and it is in Doc Settings folder where it should be.

I searched the forums and Word help but can't seem to find any advice, mainly because most people usually run these options and they only wish to modify the instances where they apply, rather than permanently disable them.

Please help! Much appreciated! Thanks!

All keys/passwords from my programs were in a folder (named Software).
After buying a new program I tried to include it in the key.txt file in that folder
The file had disappeared
But a few days before I had uploaded the Software folder to Google Drive. So I downloaded it.
The key.txt file appeared but I could not open it.
There is a lens at the right of the file which when scanned upon, says "view file in folder"
When I click on it, a message, on a black background, says
Unable to locate document with ID "about 25 letters and numbers"
It does not admit a copy and paste and goes away after a couple of seconds.
So I painfully wrote down the whole string, about 4 characters at a time because the message would go away.
I entered all these characters in Google Search and got no answer (this has not been found).
How can I recover my programs passwords should the PC crash, or if I wish to reinstall or something, without having to contact the program manufacturer.
I cannot call the support telephone because I live in South America, and long distance calls are very expensive. And, many times, you cannot find a place in their sites for written support requests.
Could anybody help me with this, please?

I tried to download a WinRAR program using the google search bar.
The first link (actually an ad, but I was not being careful enough) was

I thought it was "legit" so clicked the download. I then started the installation but suddenly realized the file icon looked "unfamiliar". I stopped the installation half-way and cancelled it (I was prompted with "the installation is not complete" and asked if I really want to cancel it).
I went back to google search and saw the legitimate WinRAR from www.rarlab.com.

I've since deleted the "WinRAR" from software-watcher but am not sure if any adware has been installed and activated. As the program was installed in a company's computer (and I am NOT the administrator), I do not know if the computer is equipped with anti-adware programs.

I know it's possible to open a specific file type on a specific program (using default programs or "open with" context menu). But I was wondering if it's possible to apply that on a specific file, not file type.

For example, I have 4 videos (vid1.avi, vid2.avi, vid3.avi, vid4.avi) and I want vid1.avi to open in WMP (by default) while the other 3 in another video player like MPC (also by default). Is it possible?

A:Is it possible to set a specific file to open with another program?

Not by default, but you could do it using a new shortcut.

Create a shortcut to the player.

Then add the path to the file you want to play so the shortcut points to:

"C:\folder\player.exe" "D:\videos\avi1.avi"

Another option is to change the file extension to something unused e.g. .bvi instead of .avi and then associate the .bvi extension to the player you want for that file

Another option is to convert the file to another known format and associate that with the alternate player.

Go to Default Programs in Control Panel open it, select Set your Default Programs. First off you need to know the extension of this file you do not want any program to open, example, jpeg, gif..etc.. Select each program that can open this file and uncheck that extension for it, then would be back to unknown.

In explorer the file to be downloaded is SG33V10.zip and this becomes becomes SG33V10.pdf.In Firefox the downloaded file has added a 1.htm to the zip ending and than makes a mess of opening it -the file to be downloaded is SG33V10.zip and on downloading this becomes SG33V10.zip-1.htm which on opening is rubbish

Since I upgraded to IE8,
1)I can no longer open MS office attachments such as .doc or excel in Windows Mail
2) Many images on websites are no longer viewable, just show as a box with a red x. I click on the "compatability" button, but that doesnt work with either.

Any solutions?
I tried unclicking the dont allow attachments button, didnt work.

A:Downloaded IE8, and cannot open MS office file attchments in Windows mail

I work at an large ISP here in the states and we have TONS of problems with IE8, try the knowledge base on Microsoft Corporation of if you can uninstall and revert back to IE7. We have seen IE8 corrupt and force a full OS reinstall, so be careful.

I am getting a "Your current security settings do not allow this file to be download" error when I click on a intranet link that is supposed to open up a PDF file from
an IE web site.
So the link's detail is like this: http://192.168.x.x/pdf/i23424.pdf.

I have add the link http://192.168.x.x/* value
= 3 to the Site to Zone Assignment List in my GPO but it still does not work.
My GPO also allows File Download to happen for the trusted sites.
File download is disable in internet site's custom level.
Someone knows how to fix this please advise.

Well I downloaded the zbrush program and the install guide but they downloaded in .php format, because I used free download manager on the links instead of firefox. I know it downloaded the program and exe because it's the right size but I don't know how to change it from a .php extension file to an .exe so I can execute the program in windows xp.
Any advice would be great cause this file is really big and I really don't want to re-download it since dial up took hours and hours the first time.

A:How to open exe file that downloaded as a php file?

Change the file name extension to .exe.To do this, open My Computer, Go to Tools -> Folder Options -> View Tab. Under Advanced Settings, do not check Hide extensions for known file types. Then change to extension of the file. This only works in Windows XP.

What the title says - see screen shots

Be aware that is NOT just an issue with ZIP files - its an issue with the Choose default program option on EVERY file type.

I tried the Remove & Restore Open With registry patches from here, and rebooted - didn't fix

I tried minimal Safe Boot - still exists

I tried the Default Programs Editor - same error message - NB: I've been using this for years, long before this problem showed up.

I tried sfc scannow and System Restore back to a few days ago - no luck.

I'm not sure what broke it - I don't use the Choose default program very often, so it could have been like this for a while, as in a few months, not more than six though.

Aside : If you're wondering why I have Firefox in the Open With for zips. I'm damned if I know, why would I wanna do that I ask myself. But I would have added Peazip as it's my secondary archiver.

A:Can't add to Open With for any file type

I did a restore from my oldest (Dec 14 2013) system backup (macrium) looks like the problem was there then. I installed a couple of new things on October, gut feeling says it was one of them that caused this problem.

The next thing I'm thinking of trying is an inline repair of windows

Does anyone think an inline repair will NOT fix this problem - I'm not confident, but that's a gut feeling too.

I might as well do a new windows install to freshly formatted drive rather wast time on an inline repair and then find I have to do a fresh install anyway - I've not done a fresh install since I got this box in mid 2009.

Hello, I receive attachment in email as well as on CD's which when I attempt to open I get a message 'can not open file type do you want to search web to find application?' I have tried to open with application I have on my system everything from MicroSoft Word, Works Exel, to WordPerfect, QuarkXpress, Microsoft Explore, Firefox, Acrobat Reader, Microsoft Reader and nothing I have opens the file. When I go the Web to search for an application I get can not find file type. Is there some setting on my computer that I can change to have these files come in so I can open them. I have no trouble opening files that come in Word, WordPerfect, Asci, or Acrobat Reader, PDF files. The icon of the attached file looks like a page icon white with four dots in the center. Hope you can help. I can send you a copy if you think that would help. I am on XP Pro my email clients I use are Thunderbird and Outlook Express. The CD's come in with audio files which I can open. Thank you. Xandr

Win 8.1 (64 bit)

On start up, after all icons etc are in place, I get prompted with the message, "How do you want to open this type of file". If I just click anywhere on the Desktop, it disappears.

I have run sfc /scannow 3 times , I have run DISM and it fixed a few corrupt files. I have run cc cleaner on the registry. I have run Malwarebytes (with the latest updates) and it is still there.

The only process in Start-up is Windows Host Process (Rundll32)

Any thoughts, anyone?

Thanks in advance

A:[SOLVED] How to you want to open this type of file?

First off, never run CCleaner's registry cleaner. It can ruin your PC from usage and require a full reinstall.

Do you have a CD in your CD tray?

Having originally posted this in the Win 8.1 forum, I was advised to post here. (http://www.techsupportforum.com/foru...ml#post5277730).

On start up, after all icons etc are in place, I get prompted with the message, "How do you want to open this type of file". with the usual list of possible applications underneath.

Somewhat bizarrely I get the same issue with a clean boot.

I decided to choose Notepad from the list of applications that appeared and received the following message "Cannot find the C:\Program.txt file" Do you want to create a new file. This I did and rebooted and received the following information "You have to rename to it to C:\Program1 or Windows will not operate properly.

This I did with no apparent ill effects.

The computer operates as normal. In the C: folder I can see no files called Program, hidden or otherwise

Hoping someone can advise

Thanks in advance
