Windows 7 computer (Shared) loses connection

Q: Windows 7 computer (Shared) loses connection

Hi
I have had a Xp based network for years with no problems. Remote desktop connection to a shared computer. The same shared computer would have various drives that were shared and I could map network drives from it or remote desktop to it without issues.
I recently upgraded my office laptop to a newer computer and it is running windows 7 Pro.
Upgraded the shared computer( named Grunt) with shared drives to windows 7 at the same time.
Ever since changing my computers to Windows 7 I have a problem that has been reoccurring.
The Grunt will disappear from the network, the mapped drives will stop working(in the middle of streaming or copying a file) or/and the remote desktop connection will disconnect.
Very frustrating.
All computers same workgroup.
Windows 7 computers same homegroup
Looked online and saw that other people have had similar issues for years.
Some fixes on the internet said to edit the registry
HKLM\system\CurrentControlSet\S....etc
Problem is I have no HKLM section in MY registry...
What can I do to fix this problem?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

We have an office with about 30 people in it and I set up a "server" computer running Windows 7 Professional x64. The company cannot afford to purchase a real server, so I'm trying to make do with our existing hardware. Here is some more info and the symptoms
of the problem:

The connection will intermittently drop out and only some people are able to access the shared folder.
Shared folder is mapped on all other computers on the network (I did this by going to Computer > Map Network Drive and mapped the shared folder to Z:\)
We have a Ricoh multi-function printer with scanner/copier/fax that we use to scan in documents and save them to the shared folder's
Scans folder. The copier is suddenly unable to scan to the Scans folder.

The only solution I've been able to come up with is constantly rebooting the computer hosting the shared folder.
I have set the autodisconnect to 1 minute by running this command: net config server /autodisconnect:1 and also added a DWORD value to the shared folder computer's registry (can't remember off the top of my head what it was).
Any ideas would be much appreciated!!

I wanted to post an update to this issue. On another thread, I found a solution that (so far) seems to have worked:

Start > begin typing Device Manager and click on Device Manager.
View > Show hidden devices
Expand the section Network
Devices
Right-click > Uninstall (be sure to check the box that says 'also delete driver'
Click OK
Continue doing this on all entries under Network Devices (some entries won't do anything when you click uninstall, not sure why, but it's all good as long as you click on each one and select Uninstall)
Restart your computer
Log in to Windows, and the computer should connect to Windows Update and download a compatible driver for each network device.

I'm guessing that the logic behind doing the above is that you install the most compatible Windows driver and reset all the settings for your NIC. If I encounter issues with accessing the network shared drive again, I'll re-post on this thread.

If this solution worked for you, please leave a comment, thanks.dmatranga

I have a home network of 3 wired and 2 wireless connections. One of the wired connections has started to lose connection to the network off and on.The other connections are fine. I have changed the cable and also plugged to another port on my router but this has not helped. Sometimes it will reconnect on its own and other times It will reconnect if I unplug and replug the connection from the router. Does this sound like an internet card going bad? Any other ideas?

I'm not sure if I am posting this in the right area, but none of the others seemed likely either. There are two issues.

A week ago both of my computers were running fine, no problems at all. I left for 5 days to house sit, and upon returning, I can no longer maintain an internet connection when ripping or burning DVDs on my desktop.

Also, it was previously taking about 20 minutes to rip or burn a DVD and now it is taking over an hour for each one.

I am on a dial-up connection- my only other option is satellite and I can't afford it.

I use DVD Fab for ripping and Roxio for burning.

No one had access to my desktop computer while I was gone, and it was not connected to the internet during that time.

As long as I am not doing anything resource intensive I have no problems maintaining a connection. Could it be my DVD drive is going out?

The second is with my laptop- I took it with me while I was house sitting, and was using the high speed internet at their house while I was there. Upon returning home, when I connect to the internet, I get the following message within 30 seconds of connecting- "Link to (connection name) lost." and the connection is broken.

Any ideas on either of these issues?

This problem is pretty annoying and has been going on for a long time.

I'll explain and give details as best I can.

I run frequent Spybot, Ad-Aware, NortonAV scans, SpywareGuard/Blaster on-board use CCleaner regularly.
Recently checked a HJT logfile with no problem found.

The computer will be running fine, able to connect to the Internet either with Firefox or IE (mostly using Firefox).
I have the PopPeeper email notifyer checking for new mail every 10 minutes.

I leave the computer on 24/7 except for times requiring reboot (install a new program, after Spybot, CCleaner, etc. or in any case where prompted to do a restart).

Problem: I'll be away from the computer for an hour or so and when I return I see that PopPeeper has failed to check mail (yellow error message is shown for all (3) accounts) and Firefox pages have stopped refreshing.
If I check mail at this time using my OE it will also return errors (not able to connect to servers).

The connection Icon (double computer monitors) in the System Tray (Local Area Connection 5 - Speed 100.0 Mbps)>Properties shows "Connect using CNET Pro200WL PCI Fast Ethernet".

If I restart the Computer (as I had to do a few minutes ago) then everything returns to a normal state and all connections are ok. The mail notifyer runs normally and the mail is automatically checked and the OE mailbox upda... Read more

Today I woke up and went to use the internet. No bueno. It didn't work. Now what I found odd was that other devices connected to my router still worked (xbox 360). I fidgetted around with a few things and eventually connected my pc directly to my modem and am still getting the same problem. No internet connection for my pc. When I troubleshoot this is what I get "Your computer appears to be correctly configured, but the device or resource (www.microsoft.com) is not responding." I tried multiple things and nothing worked. Unplugging my modem and plugging it back in causes the internet to work for roughly 2-3 minutes and then it dies out again. I've googled around (very frustrating because I need to reboot my modem every 2-3 minutes lol) and have not found a fix. I tried updating drivers for my network card. Not fixed. I tried changing my DNS servers and it didn't work. I talked to my ISP (comcast) and explained the problem. I was told well the modem is working correctly it's not our end so we cannot help you. I've been sitting in my computer chair for roughly 6 hours now trying to figure out what is going on, but cannot find anything. Another thing to note after restarting the modem I get the error ""Local Area Connection" does not have a valid ip configuration". It fixes this problem and then the internet works for 2-3 minutes and I have to repeat the process.

2/ i tried connecting the ethernet cable to another computer n it still works so it's not the cable or the router

3/ i dl lspfix but i dont know how to run it; am i supposed to highlight the tcp/ip option and click to remove it?

4/ i tried uninstalling and reinstalling tcp/ip but no luck

i had the same problem before and i think it was related to sygate firewall but i performed the same procedure i had done before (which didn't work this time)

please help!

thanks in advance

A:win2k pro computer loses network connection

if you are getting a 169.254.xxx.xxx IP then the DHCP server on the router is not assigning an IP address to that computer. Check the router and see if maybe you are only allowing for one less computer than you have connected to your router. That could be the cause. By any chance when you tried the same cable on another computer, was that cable on the same router port that this cable is on? Maybe its a bad port

I have a shared computer (XP Pro, IE7) at work that keeps booting us off. I ran Ad Aware and Spybot S&D. Did not help.
In Explorer, it will frequently come up with Internet Explorer can not display webpage message. We also use computer for electronic time clock and repair orders and that program also keeps losing connection.
I've included a HJT logfile, but am wondering if it's actually the connection, internal to the computer, or a virus of some sort.
We are on a server, but this is the only computer booting us off.

If someone could look at my logfile and give an opinion, I'd surely appreciate it.

Hi,

I'm currently using a Lenovo V360 and my issue is that my computer, which connects via wi-fi, disconnects from the network randomly. The network will be completely removed from the list of available networks. The other networks available will still be visible. I tried turning off the wi-fi button on my laptop and turning it back on, but the list of available networks still does not include the network I was recently connected to. The only way to see the network on my Lenovo is to restart the computer. The connection works perfectly after I restart. It is definitely not the network's problem because I am still connected to the same network with my other laptop.

If necessary, my laptop runs Windows 7, my router is a D-Link, and the encryption is WPA.

Thanks.

Hi there,

I have 2 computers (+ a laptop sometimes). Both computers are ethernet hard wired to a belkin wireless router & the laptop uses 'wireless' connection.

Both computers often remain on for hours; the main one (with the router installed on it) will very often fail to connect to the internet via explorer, O/E or even any updater (avg etc.) after being on for several hours. A reboot cures the problem.

However, the other computer never loses its connection. (Nor does the laptop). All run the XP o.s.

All suggestions for a cure gratefully accepted please.

Many thanks in anticipation.

Hi, I'm new to these forums so I hope I do this right. I recently built a new computer with pretty standard parts (Asus P4P800E mobo, P4 3.2E) and everything has been going smoothly. I was able to install Windows XP Pro onto it, and even install some other programs like messengers and virus protection. One day after I restarted it though, I lost my connection to the internet and was unable to connect. I connect through a linksys router, and I know it's my ISP because I'm still able to connect with other computers in the network. The only way I'm able to restore my internet is to use the system restore option and set it back a few checkpoints before I lost the connection. It's really become a hassle because it's sporadic on when it'll drop the connection. I went a few days installing the rest of my programs and restarting with no problem, and then all of a sudden it would drop the connection, I'd have to restore, and start over again. This probably has something to do with changes to the settings, but I have no idea what it could be. If you need any more info, let me know, and thanks in advance!

I've been having a problem with this computer since I first got it, where (seemingly randomly) I will lose internet connection, then while it tries to reconnect, the computer freezes, becoming completely unresponsive. The the only way I have found to get any functionality back has been a hard shut down with the power key, then powering on the computer again.I've read around this is usually caused by a system overheat, but nowhere on the PC is it even warm, so I'm not sure where to look. Any help you can provide is appreciated. NOTE: I am using a wireless connection, haven't tried a wired connection because its incredibly annoying to get one up and running, but I do have that option.

This is my setup:

1. I have a internet gateway(modem/router combo Super G) in the living room. I am using U-verse.
2. I have desktop that has a USB wireless n adapter in my room.
3. Windows 7 Pro 64 bit, Norton internet security 2012
Here is my issue:

When my android phone connects to the router by turning on wifi mode, my computer loses its connection, but the phone connects and works fine.
This only happens when I turn wifi on near the computer, or turn wifi on and enter in my room. When the devices are somewhat far apart, the computer doesn't lose its connection. For example, turing wifi on in the living room and stay there, my computer stay connected.
And it happens only when I use a USB wireless n adapter. A USB wireless g adapter doesn't show this problem.
By the way, my android phone is wifi b,g,n compatible.

To test, I turned my laptop on, which is wifi b,g,n compatible, next to my desktop computer and both worked fine. However, when I turn wifi on on my phone, my desktop loses it connection, but my laptop stay connected.

I've check the ip on all the devices, and the devices show different ip addresses so, the router assigned or recognized the devices correctly, I would assume.

So, what seems be the problem? Does anyone know? Thanks.

This is an on-going annoyance. I have a Home Group running on WiFi with two computers. All too often, when I run the Home Group troubleshooter I get a message that there is a new unshared printer, and installing it will let everyone use it.

This happened again this morning. My computer woke up to run its daily SuperAntiSpyware task, went back to sleep, and woke up when I got up. Later, instead of going to sleep after two hours, as set in Power Options, it was still awake after four hours--that is what caused me to run the troubleshooter. When I get this message, it says to click on the install button.

All this time, the other computer was in hibernation. (That's another story: I use hibernation as I've been unable to restore sleep on that machine.)

There's no pattern to this: I'll get the unshared printer message on one or the other computer, or, as today, on both. Clicking on the install button often hangs the Control Panel Home group on my computer for a while; sometimes, this fixes it after a while. A few days ago, I did not even try that, just rebooted, and that fixed it. That did not work today, but I did get rid of it, only to find it on the other computer--and clicking the install button made the message go away immediately.

Suggestions to cure this malady, if available and shareable, would be appreciated.

What firewall or security suite is, or ever was, on the system?

TCP/IP stack repair options for use with Vista through 10.

Start - All Programs - Accessories and right click on Command Prompt, select "Run as Administrator" to open a command prompt. [For Windows 8 thru 10: <Windows Logo> + x - Command Prompt(Admin)]

Reset WINSOCK entries to installation defaults: netsh winsock reset catalog

Reset IPv4 TCP/IP stack to installation defaults. netsh int ipv4 reset reset.log

Reset IPv6 TCP/IP stack to installation defaults. netsh int ipv6 reset reset.log

Good news is, that up to now, the network troubleshooter, has been pretty good about fixing the issue. It usually just resets the local area connection, and walla, I am back on the network. Still, can't help thinking that I never had this issue with previous versions of windows, or any other computer for that matter.

Before you ask, yes, my nic drivers are all as up to date as they can be at the moment..

I have a Windows Vista 64-bit desktop with a USB attached Brother laser printer. I've shared the printer on my home network and been printing from 4 PCs for over 2-years. I recently got a Windows 7 64-bit laptop. I installed the printer fine as a network attached printer and can print on it. However, always, eventually, the Windows 7 laptop drops connectivity to the printer. It won't print on it and I tried to reach it via, printers, add a printer and got - Cannot connect to the printer, error code 0x00000002. If I restart the laptop then all prints fine for a while.

Appreciate any ideas on why the Win7 machine loses this connection. I can still access all other shared folders on the Vista machine, so network isn't the issue.
Thanks!

NOTHING else has changed since the update. If I reboot, it works for less than 30 minutes and then the connection switches to "limited connectivity" with no way to revert it back to the usual status. If I reboot the computer, it works fine again for a little bit. Oddly enough, if I connect the computer to the exact same router using wireless, it does not seem to be dropping the connection.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

I'm using a Dell Studio XPS 8100 with the factory Broadcom Netlink Gigabit Ethernet adapter.

So far, I have:
disabled, reenabled the device (PC seems to hang when I do this as well)
reinstalled the drivers after removing them
verified there is no proxy or weird DNS settings setup on the connection

Thoughts?

A:Windows 8.1 loses wired internet connection

I have an XPS8100 with the same symptoms and same Broadcom Ethernet Net Link driver.

I haven't found a solution either.

Have switched to wireless in the mean time, no problem with it.

So every once in a while my PC will change to the Windows 98 theme (gray menus, etc) and my connection will be automatically lost. The only way to connect back to the internet is to restart the entire PC. I've tried searching all around and have tried using tons of software and NOTHING works. I don't have the CDs that came with my PC otherwise I would have restored anything by now.

Edit: I'm using Windows XP HE SP1.

A:PC changes to Windows 98 theme and loses connection... will not stop!

So, it's interesting that your PC reverts to Windows Classic at the same time as you loose network connectivity.

First, do you receive any error messages when this happens. Second, why are you still using SP1?

Hi, I have a Windows XP computer that shows the volume control greyed out and says "no playback device found." But when I reboot, the sound is fine for a few minutes (basically, until it's done with all the post-reboot activity that ties up the computer for another few minutes), and then the audio device dissapears again.

But, when I look in Device Manager, my audio device and drivers are they and in good standinging.

Did a complete virus scan that just found adware in cookies.

Any suggestions?
thank you

Welcome to TSG...That audio device-could you tell us what it is? Perhaps a specialized sound card with a mixer program installed alongside? Also make and model of computer, and tell us about any hardware or software you've added or removed recently.

Hi everyone,

I am trying to set up a VPN from my Windows 7 desktop to my Windows 8 laptop for file sharing.
I can make the connection work and all that.
But for some reason, when I connect to my host via VPN, my host loses internet connection. The connection status is still active but no webpages load.
This is all when both the laptop and desktop is in the same LAN. Since I am not at my desktop when they are on two different routers, I cant test what happens when I am remote.
I read that guests can sometimes lose connection because of the "Use host's default gateway" option but since my host is losing connection, I am not sure what it is.

Do I need 2 network interfaces to properly set up a VPN? I am currently just using my motherboards ethernet port (Asus P8P67)

Any insight would be much appreciated.
Thanks!

A:Windows 7 Host loses internet connection when connected to VPN

This is the only answer I see for this type of problem.

Sounds like you need to disable the option Use default gateway on remote network. You can find this by clicking the Advanced button in the properties page of Internet Protocol Version 4 (or 6) of your VPN connection.

I am running Windows 2003 Server. From time to time, all workstations and the server machine will lose internet connectivity (including email into the mail server). Problem is resolved by restarting the server. System may be up for weeks without a problem or for only hours. No real pattern.

Broadband connection comes directly into the back of the server. ISA firewall is running. Comes out of the machine into a 16 port switch.

Problem has persisted since installing the new server 12 months ago.

Any suggestions on where to start looking? Nothing obvious to me in the log files.

Hello everyone,
I searched everywhere for an answer to this problem, for several hours now but with no luck. I'd be more than happy if someone has a quick answer, but I doubt it.

My problem: Shared network drive (folder), when accessed over wireless from more than 1 PC (2 or 3) simultaneously, drops everywhere with a "The specified network name is no longer available" (in Windows Explorer), or "File cannot be read" (in a program). And I don't mean accessing the same file; yes, the files I've tried with are in the same folder, but when the connection is lost a)one client is streaming video from one file and b)another client is copying over some other file to the same folder. It even happens, for example, when one client is transferring a file, and another tries to list the folder. The connection for the file transfer is immediately lost.

My setup: Home network. 4 clients (3 laptops - 2 running XP and one running windows 7, and a desktop, running windows XP). 1 server, running windows server 2003 Enterprise Edition, 2Gb RAM, 2.66 Celeron CPU, and with a 1.3 TB Shared drive partition. The idea is to use the server as a NAS. The desktop and the server are connected via 100MBit UTP/Ethernet, to a DLINK DI-604 Router (WAN port of the router used for Internet). To another one of the LAN ports is connected a Wireless router, NETGEAR WGT624 v3. Wireless connection for the laptops is established at 54 Mbits. The share is mainly used for movies and... This is a strange one.  I can see where others are having the same issue but I have not found an answer yet so hence this post.

This issue is happening on a Win 7 Pro system.  As far as I know we are not having this issue on any XP systems.

Problem:  I have at least one Windows 7 system that every so often will lose access to network shares on our network.  It does not lose access to all mapped drives or shares just to a couple and one server in particular
- other shares are still working fine.

I have logged on as another user to test the profile but it has the same issue.  It doesn't matter if I try to access the mapped drive or browse directly to the share.  It will not connect.

Once I reboot the computer, access is restored like it should be.  It will work for a few hours and then go bonkers again.   HELP!!

A:Windows 7 Pro randomly loses connection to some network drives/shares.

I have not tried PK's suggestion yet.  I applied Win 7 SP1 on the system having the problem and am waiting to see if this resolves the issue.  I hate to make a change to my server that has been running without issue for the last 3 years.
I will look at the forum you referenced and repost with results.  thanks

Wife has small Acer laptop running 8.1 and running wirelessly. It keeps on losing internet connection although shows full wi-fi signal. Icon shows asterisk and network connection shows 'limited'. Acer suggested complete reset which has been done several
times and then have installed new motherboard but it still has the problem. Have checked for and installed network adapter driver (Realtek) updates but problem still persists. It works ok for about 1 or 2 weeks after a reset but then it all happens again.
TalkTalk changed the router to eliminate that.  My desktop runs without any problems wired or wirelessly as do two other laptops (all now updated to Windows 10) and two Android phones. Dare not update Acer to Win 10 until I know it is not Acer problem
as guarantee about to run out. Spent 6 months trying to sort it.

hi all, a recent problem has occurred with my computer. whilst playing games, i can play for a few minutes, and then a black screen appears, with sound looping and the screen status colour changes from solid green to flickering green. This is XP Professional by the way.My system is as follows:P5N-E Sli MoboC2D E750 2.66ghz2.0 gb ramXFX 8800GTS 320mbThe games in which this occur are as follows:Team Fortress 2Grand Theft Auto: San AndreasThe Elder Scrolls IV: OblivionGuild WarsHowever, what is strikingly odd about this problem is that it only occurs about 80% of the time. Yesterday, I managed to play Guild Wars, Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic 2, Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas and The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion absolutely perfectly.I have searched forums, and it seems this can be linked to overheating, but my temperature gauge on the front of the computer says I run at about 30 C most of the time, and the computer itself is not hot inside at all. All fans are spinning fine, no dust.I have heard other issues such as graphics card drivers, and i have tried 3 different drivers, all of which did not overcome this problem.Could it possibly be sound drivers? Or possibly something wrong with the motherboard? Thanks in advance.Mod Edit: Topic moved to more appropriate forum~ TMacK

XPS 8700, Windows 7, using an Ethernet cable.
The Internet Access icon (in the system tray) will display a red X, then the icon will show spinning, then the icon will appear normal. It takes about 10-seconds for the entire process to occur.
During this time, connectivity to the Internet is lost. I'm using an Ethernet cable to connect.
Typically, it occurs when I'm asking for lots of data rapidly (e.g., flipping through online photos quickly or streaming a large video).
It always fixes itself. But, it's disruptive to my surfing... and annoying.
How might I fix this? Thanks.

Hello there,

I have a pc with win. vista 32bit who has attached to it a Konika Minolta Bizhub 163 copier (who does not have a network card).
All computers on the network that are running windows xp or vista, 32bit or 64bit are connecting and printing without problems but the machines that are running windows 7 32bit or 64bit are not.
Windows 7 machines, are able to connect to the shares on that machine, read or write files, can see the shared printer but when it comes to connecting to it they all fail with the same error: Could not connect to printer, error 0x0000000d.

I've tried defining a local port with the name address of the printer, ip port with the ip of the print server, i have been searching the microsoft database and nothing i found so far didn't help me.

The fun part is that they all worked fine before but suddenly windows 7 machines stopped printing.
In that day or previous days, the print server did not installed any updates (has updating feature turned off), nobody did anything to it, neither to the other machines (actually they all had updating feature turned off, because we do not love microsoft "fixes" and blue screens).

So, any suggestions for me from the community?

You might try to uninstall any recent Windows 7 updates that may have been recently installed.

I can't think of any other reason why this problem would just appear.

Hello People,

I have recently upgraded a computer system from xp to windows 7 via vista (along way I know and not my personal choice).

The pc is connected via ethernet to a windows server 2008 r2, from where it has access to various documents they use.

After the upgrade, the access time to load / edit these files is very slow compared to what it was under Windows XP.

Has anyone here had a similar experience, or maybe know of a tweak to make the file access quicker ?

A:Slow connection to shared files on Windows 2008 Server R2

Yep, sure have. The problem is that the machine was XP to Vista to Windows 7. The only fix we found for this was to WIPE the drive and install Windows 7 from scratch on the machine. Wish I had better news. -WS

i have had this problem for a while but i've ignored it but i thought i might as well send it here. My Shared Documents folder doesnt show up on any of the accounts or anywhere on the computer as "Shared Documents" but rather as simply "Documents". I'm not sure what i have to change in the registry or whether i should.
I've recently done the HJT log file scan and sent it to the forum and used all the usual spyware and virus removal things that is customary so its not any kind of malware and i dont have any other serious problems.

I have three computers all Win 7 Home Premium and sharing (Homegroup). Side not I also had them sharing with out Homegroup and still same issue. Also This occurs regardless if PC3 is connected via wire or wireless. Additional notes AV was also disable to rule out. That is the only thing running on PC3 and nothing is running background wise on PC1 or PC2.

PC1 can easily view contents of Shared PC2 instantly.

PC2 can easily view contents of Shared PC1 instantly.

PC3 can easily view contents of Shared PC1 & PC2 instantly.

PC1 & PC2 can not view contents of Shared PC3 instantly; it takes approximately 35 seconds to view contents of main shared folder and same for each additional sub-folder. Also if copying a file initially it takes awhile before it starts and then stars off slow around 585KB/s copying over from PC1 or PC2 to PC3 before it jumps up to around 10MB/s+. However if I copy the same file from PC3 to PC1 or PC2 no speed issues what so ever. Speeds actually get well up into 70MB/s.

Any thoughts?

I've had AOL "forever" with no problems. All of a sudden when I log on the message "AOL has lost connection, the computer has lost connection with AOL....." Error AC-0000, Error AC-0015.

I can get online via Internet Explorer with out any problems -- it's obviously an AOL issue. Probably some stupid setting that I don't know about is off and I'm probably one click away from resolution but I don't know what to do.

I tried all the suggestions AOL put out on their "one click fix" suggestions -- I even unistalled and reinstalled the latest version: AOL 9.5 but the "connection" error persists. I am on a Dell with Windows XP, services pack 3.
I know AOL isn't the greatest thing out there, but my wife and daughter are very comfortable and used to it so I'd really like to get it back for their sakes.

Can anyone help?
Thanks so much!

Well, I am not really a tech guy so I don't really know how to descibe this, but I will try my best.
Lately, my internet connection has been well...losing connection. On the Modem first the DSL Light goes out, and then the internet light turns red. It gains connection back automatically, but it takes anywhere from 30 seconds to 5 minutes for it to find a connection. And when it finds connection, first the DSL light goes back on then the internet light turns green again.

It seems to lose connection more often based on how long I've been on the internet, it can vary from once every hour, or once every minute or so.

I'll try to give you guys any information I can if you ask, hope you guys can help.

Thanks

I shared a Canon Pixma MP170 printer on a Windows 7 Home Premium machine. I can see the shared printer name over the network from the XP machine within Add Printer Wizard screen. When I try to add the shared Canon printer on a Windows XP SP3 computer it says it will connect to the printer to download drivers but than it says no drivers are available.
Then it opens up a screen that asks me to provide an unnamed INF file. I put the install CD for the Pixma in the CD tray and pointed it to all Canon INF files located on the CD (one at a time) but it will not go any further. I also found same type of Canon printer INF files within the Program Files/Canon printer folder, but it would not use those either to complete printer add.

Am I missing some procedure that is needed to add a shared printer on a Windows XP computer from a different operating system such as Windows 7 Home Premium?

The Canon MP170 works both when plugged into XP machine and Win7 machine through USB port

Thanks for any help that someone can provide

Using the NetShell utility. Run this from the command line then reboot.

netsh int ip reset c:\tcpiprebuild.log

See if this fixes it. If not, post some more info, such as OS, router, apps running, and network card settings.

Sometimes my 4G modem (X1 Carbon) loses connection. It then whines about missing or wrong APN (even though the one I've always used is still there and is "applied"). A reboot didn't work, but later when I started the machine up again it magically worked again. There didn't seem to be any new driver updates....so what to do? And don't say delete the APN and type it in again. That has been tried....many many times.
