Windows 7 strange security level-related behavior

Q: Windows 7 strange security level-related behavior

So I really didn't know how to get a better title for this issue I have and it's started bothering me. I'll describe the symptoms:

- WinRAR drag&drop not working. Access Denied error, basically cannot write to temp folder
- some apps cannot update, such as Opera
- some files are asking again and again for permission to be ran, even though I have unchecked "Always ask before opening this file". Message is "Publisher couldn't be verified etc." Might be unrelated.

I can obviously solve these issues by running Opera or WinRAR as administrator, but I have installed Win 7 quite a few times ago, this behavior is not normal.

Can you help me bringing things back to normal?
Thanks.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Have you ran all your security software, e.g. Spyware/Anti-Virus/Malware? Have you tried running a sfc/scannow to check for and possibly repair any corrupted system files? SFC /SCANNOW Command - System File Checker
How long ago did this start? Do you have a system restore point you could use and have you tried it?

After the latest update from WSE (today, 6, July) WSE will not start up it's window, either from the taskbar pinned icon, or, by asking the file to open.

I have checked with the "troubleshooter" and no problems are listed.

Checking system security, states that everything is fine.

To repeat, nothing seems to open the WSE window, even tho' my system says everything is okay.

All the files are there, seen by checking with explorer.

Has anyone else experienced this problem?

Plus, any advice appreciated.

Thanks in advance for your help.

Howdy--

Desktop's acting a little strange and I'd like to eliminate a security issue. Basically, after running any app for a while it'll freeze up (not all the time, but maybe once every two days). I end the process and it disappears from the process list, but the screen for the app stays there, locked up. While it sits there with that app locked up, I can run any proggy except the one that is sitting locked up just fine. When I log off and on again, I have internet, but no network, so I have to restart it. I'm not the best at reading HijackThis Logs, I didn't see anything, but that doesn't mean there isn't anything.

If it isn't security, what might it be?

Thanks

I hope someone can help me work this out, it's driving me crazy!
I'll try to explain it in as few words as possible!
There is a website we need to access on which we're having trouble getting some of the buttons to display.  In short it works when the internet zone is set to "Medium" but not when it's "Medium-High" (I have added it to trusted sites
but in properties it shows as "Unknown Zone (Mixed)" so seems to use the "Internet Zone" settings.)
I am trying to track down which security setting is causing the issue.  To do this my plan was to make a note of all the settings that differ between Medium and Medium-High.  However if I set it to medium-high and manually change all the settings
to be identical to medium it still doesn't work... yet if I use the "Reset to: Medium" option at the bottom it does work!  This doesn't make any sense to me.
Are there other hidden stetting affected by the "Reset to" option that I can't change manually.
Any help would really be appreciated!  Thanks!

Hello I'm having some very frustrating issues with my Dell Inspiron laptop. Most of my problem comes from using programs that uses audio or plays any sound at all. I have 2 very annoying issues and i'll describe them the best way I can.

First I have a problem with typing. When I type anything, even as I type this message now, the characters delay to show up on screen. Sometimes I can type a full sentence then stop, and actually see the letters come in one by one and sometimes suddenly catch up to my typing. I have tried reinstalling the driver for my keyboard, checking for the "PCMService" process, and have done system restore quite a few times but no luck. I have no idea why my pc is doing this.

My second issue is much more frustrating. I know that most pc's will once in a while have an issue with a program or windows itself not responding, but my pc seems to do this only when im not playing music or any audio. When windows stops responding, it feels like it only affects programs that play sound such as Internet Explorer or Windows Media Player. When I open a program that uses no sound at all, it works fine. I feel like I have to open up Media Player or iTunes and play a song as soon as windows starts to keep windows from freezing up. I try task manager to end the non-responding program and it stays there. I have tried reinstalling the sound driver (sigmatel audio) and updating it from dell support but still no luck.

Please help!!

Its been app 15-16 months since 1st stable Win 10 released. In this time period, I have faced a strange Win 10 behavior 3 times.

I dont know what triggers the behavior? No Windows Updates were there.

The strange behavior happened 3 times.
2 times - When I restarted the system, I got "Windows is getting ready, Dont turn off your system". The process took app 30-40 mins. After restart, Win 10 was back to default i.e all my data, programs were intact BUT Win 10 layout i.e every options/settings/Win 10 look was back to default i.e like you have just installed Win 10.

3rd time was today - I restarted the system & got "Windows is getting ready, Dont turn off your system". The process took app 30-40 mins. BUT this time, after restart, the system was like it was before the process i.e I dont notice any changes.

Any info on this?

sounds like it could be something as simple as rebuilding the MBR,
have you tried that ? It could be that that is where the bug is.
If you don't know the MBR commands just google them but resetting
and rebuilding the MBR is easy and safe. I would try it seeing it takes
about 5min to do and see if that clears it up ?

Hi guys,

OK, first i'll admin i'm a bit of an old f'rt having used Windows and DOS since not long after fire was invented, but the fluoride dumping may be getting to my brain, as I cannot figure out why DOS is behaving this way....

At a DOS prompt, I should always be able to see the current directory, but something seems to be magically changing me to C:\windows\system32 instead (and back again! Hobbits beware!)

I noticed this sometime recently when I was getting a directory list of files and somehow it magically changed directories. I have to say I know this was not the normal behavior, but cannot attribute any changes on the PC to this problem.

In the attached picture you see I was in the C:\bin folder and performed a dos DIR command when low and behold I get a list of file (file not found in this case) for the c:\windows\system32 folder instead.
I change directory (CD) back to C:\bin and think to myself, strange... what if I just press enter?
Low and behold, pressing enter has the strange behavior of toggling me between these two folders.

WHAT THE Fine operating environment is going on here? SOMETHING needs to be fixed.

Windows 7 Pro 64-bit

UPDATE: This only seems to happen when I configure properties to specify my "start in" directory of C:\bin

This is so weird. My windows 7 has been doing the strangest things. The first thing I noticed was when I created a folder and it wouldn't show up unless I exited the current folder and reopened it. Sometimes I can't click on anything. For example, I right click to copy and it just flashes then closes. Logging off and back on temporarily solves the problem but then it starts happening again after a while.
This type of thing happens a lot. When it wont let me click on anything, I press the windows key to open the start menu, then everything works okay for a few seconds. When i use ctrl for anything like cntrl + f to find something, the start menu opens.
At first I thought w7 was doing it on purpose because my copy of windows has detected itself as not genuine (even though it is - this is a known issue with microsoft) But there are other unexplainable behaviors. For example my bios screen has changed from a graphic version to a text version, and I really have no way of explaining that. Another seriously strange thing is that it was occasionally failing at the boot screen and restarting itself over and over without booting. Installing a copy of linux on another partition and reinstalling the bootloader temporarily fixed this problem until it happened again, but fortunately it hasn't happened in a while. I've heard there are boot-sector viruses so that concerns me. I really am in need of some help from a pro and I'd appeciate it a lot.

I just re-installed Windows 7 Home Edition x64 and I'm experiencing a strange problem. After a certain amount of time (hard to gauge) the refresh stops working properly. You can drag something to the desktop or a folder but it won't show until you manually do a refresh. Same thing with deleting a file, or creating a text file. It just doesn't disappear or appear without a refresh. At the same time, if you try to do a shutdown the system hangs and you have to manually hit the reset or power button.

Does anyone know why this is happening and how to resolve it? It's very annoying, and since it's a brand new install (only a week old) I really don't want to re-install all over again. Any help is appreciated.

I have a Windows 8 Professional machine that is acting very strange. The owner has no discernment when downloading or running programs, spends a LOT of time on Facebook, etc. and the PC just doesn't act right. Symantec Endpoint is throwing error messages (mslldp.sys has been prevented from running). His Excel doesn't detect that files have changed and just closes. Yesterday the time in the system tray stopped updating, his video stops responding...etc.

I KNOW it has to do with something he's done to the PC. The hardware is brand new. But I've scanned it with the latest Spybot, Malwarebytes, and Microsoft Antiwpyware tools and found nothing. Symantec also turned up nothing. I've got Windows 8 on an identical machine and I have no trouble with mine so I know he's gone and corrupted or infected something.

From what I've read- ComboFix isn't ready for Windows 8 yet so I'm unsure of what else to run.

Appreciate any help anyone can provide.

I did some research on the Web and found a solution to a problem I was having saving power schemes on my notebook computer. Basically, you have to go into Windows Power Options, select a custom power scheme that you created, delete it, and then save a new power scheme using a different name. Problem solved!

There is still a problem that I have not solved, however. I am running Windows XP Service Pack 2 with all the current updates and patches on my DELL Inspiron 5100 notebook computer. I am having a problem saving desktop themes. Also, I cannot delete any desktop themes that I have created!

As to my problem saving desktop themes on my notebook computer, I did a little poking around in the registry. I did a registry search as "Themes" and found this registry address:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Current Version\Explorer\ComDlg32\OpenSaveMRU\*

Also, the \Themes sub-directory under the OpenSaveMRU sub-directory.

In both places, there were several desktop themes listed, with keys a through h, as well as an "OpenSaveMRU list" key that read something like "aedcbfgh," which I presume is the order of the themes themselves.

I tried deleting all these keys in both places (all the information in the right side of the registry editor), keeping the "OpenSaveMRU" directory and sub-directories intact, then re-booting and trying to save a Desktop Theme again. Still no luck!

It is interesting to note that after doing this regist... Read more

Hi,

I'm running Windows XP Pro with three user accounts. Two accounts don't have a logon password and one does. What I have been experiencing lately, after an expensive virus cleanup from Norton which cost me $100, is that the two user accounts without passwords are prompted for a password and leaving the password field blank doesn't work. The account with a password has a password that doesn't work anymore. I have to reboot/power down and the system is back to normal and the accounts behave normally. When the virus was cleaned, I ran sfc /scannow. I'm also running Kaspersky Internet Security(KIS) 7.0. I don't if KIS has something to do with it. Currently, my computer is virus free.

Thanks for any replies.

I am having a problem with the way Windows Explorer displays one of my folders. The folder is stored under Documents>Personal. The title of the folder is LETTERS. The folder, until a few days ago, contained a subfolder called "Spain". All letters pertaining to Spain were stored in the subfolder; all other letters were stored by themselves in LETTERS. A few days ago I found all letters that were in the Spain subfolder were now combined with all other letters. The subfolder Spain no longer existed. It took me many hours to get this straightened out. For one thing, I could no longer create a new folder within the LETTERS folder. A computer technician I contacted told me that was because the LETTERS folder was READ-ONLY. Unchecking this property didn't help, so I created another dummy folder to transfer all the files in LETTERS to the dummy folder, delete LETTERS and rename the dummy folder as LETTERS. This apparently solved the problem until today: the subfolder Spain is now gone again and all letters are now combined in one folder. Just out of curiosity I brought up the DOS command and looked in USERS...DOCUMENTS>PERSONAL DOCUMENTS>LETTERS. A dir command showed the SPAIN subdirectory plus all the non-SPAIN letters, exactly the way it should be. My question: why doesn't Windows Explorer show the SPAIN subfolder and why does it combine all letters--SPAIN and non-SPAIN--together?

I run Vista Basic x64. I've been having having this intermittent problem for the last few weeks with Windows Mail. Every now and then, when I open it up to check my mail, any messages that I had previously saved in folders I created, are gone. The title of them is still there but there's no message body, just "Message cannot be found"

Also today, and I'm sure this is tied into whatever is going on, when I opened up Windows Mail, it just immediately said "no messages" without even checking the server. I thought this was odd and opened up accounts and saw that there were none in there, so I had to re-enter everything.

Maybe it's time to switch to the new Eudora!

I recently had to reinstall Windows 7 on my main PC. Before that my sound was fine. Now, I get 'zaps', pulses of intense static, whenever I (for instance) play a system sound - usually at the beginning or end, but nor precisely repeatable.

I moved my speakers from my sound card to the motherboard audio, and I get the same behavior. So I don't think this is hardware-related; if it were electrical noise I would have heard it before the Windows reinstall, and if it were driver related (for the sound card) I wouldn't hear it through the motherboard audio. I've updated all drivers anyway.

I did reinstall various codecs, but that seems to have had no effect at all.

If I use, say, Windows Media Player, I hear the little zaps at various times; perhaps at low audio levels, but I think mainly at the border between songs. It kind of feels like some startup transient, but I can't be sure of that. All the internet searching I've done hasn't led to much - mainly because most problems/solutions seem to be (say) sound-card specific.

The machine is a 64-bit CyberPowerPC, Windows 7 has all it's updates, all the drivers should be the newest stable drivers, there are no other problems with the machine. I've played with pretty much all the sound settings I can to try to get things to work - I don't think it's a clipping problem, for instance, as I've set the output levels to be fairly low.

Any help, ideas, suggestions, prayer... Read more

Hello.
Since about two days I have been experiencing a strange windows behavior while starting the system.
When powering the PC up, it goes through the post operations fine.
Then, it gets to the windows loading screen, the one with the colored lights orbiting.

The problem is that, when the logon screen should light up, i get a black screen. The display acts like it hasn't got an input signal (switching between digital and analog several times, then powering down; power led blinking).

The system stays in this state for about 90-100 seconds, then the logon screen appears and everything works fine.

I was wondering if I need to start worrying about some hardware which may be failing, or if it is something in the windows startup process that is creating trouble.

I can say that I went through the event logs, and there are no errors. In the system ones, there is only a strangely long time (abt two mins) between the kernel-cpu events and the "plug and play service running" one. The nvidia display driver seems to be working fine.

Any suggestions?
Thanks,
Mark

A:Strange behavior on windows startup

Did you make any changes to Windows lately? New Updates or any new program installs? PCs tend to get bloated over time- mine is similar in that W7 takes about 3-5 minutes to boot now due to bloat and age(my XP computer takes less than 30 seconds to boot)

Might not hurt to run a test on your hard drive's health, in case sectors are going bad, plus some malware scans and maybe some RAN tests. Go through your startup processes and see if anything new/unusual has been added lately.

I'm using Vista Basic x64 and some messages that have downloaded into Windows Mail, even ones from a few days ago, are not showing the message in the preview pane after initially showing it when it first downloaded. It's like it's disappearing on it's own. I'm getting that "Message cannot be found" error.

What's even stranger is that sometimes, by playing around with the message or maybe moving it to another folder it does appear, then it disappears again, all on it's own!

Maybe it's time to switch to Thunderbird!

Hello everyone,

I'v got a ASUS N73SV laptop on which i upgraded 3 months ago from Windows7 to W10
From now I had no special issues with it, but since 2 days my computer has a abnormal behavior at startups, and depending the startup mode:

- When I shutdown it 'normally', at the next reboot Windows startups normally BUT at any applications, I have NO right*click menu allowable (it looks like it loads it but it stops as quickly).
No way to use the computer normally, no copy/paste allowable (eg. a Google search), not possible to type some admin commands in DOS huhhu...
Nothing could could be done normally
- When I restart it (related button 'restart' / hard reboot (!)), before the W10 startup the BIOS prompts me on what disk I want to startup (the laptop got intially 2 disks and 1 DVD device).
I have to choose one otherwhise nothing happens.
I then choose the first disk (default on), Windows 10 startups normally and I DON'T have the right-click issue with a normal startup (see above for a description). All the computer is fine and could be normally used

I've looked for a malware (malware bytes), virus (avast), adw cleaner. Nothing found
Ran Wise Disk Cleaner. nothing better after
Did a system restore before the last Windows update schedule 3 das before. Same behavior.
Did a SFC /SCANNOW then a DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Scanhealth. Nothing found

A:Strange Windows 10 behavior at startup

Hi, I note
"the BIOS prompts me on what disk I want to startup (the laptop got intially 2 disks and 1 DVD device).
I have to choose one otherwise nothing happens."

I would guess your second disk may in the past have had an OS on it, and you may have to examine its characteristics in diskmgmt.msc.

Please post a screenshot as follows:
Windows key + R to open the run box
Type
diskmgmt.msc

and post a screenshot of that.

========================
If you remove the second disk, does your PC boot normally?
========================
Finally if not, as you've tried system restore unsuccessfully, I would first

Check your hard disk.
From an admin command prompt (I'll assume you can open one else research how as I'm not sure which route is limited for you)
run
chkdsk C: /F

If clear, then try a very good repair technique, one of the best features of Win 10 (I think):
Repair Install Windows 10 with an In-place Upgrade - Windows 10 Forums

This
- keeps all your programs and most settings
- creates Windows.old
- can take a long time, depending on your hardware (it's virtually a Windows installation)
- turns off system restore
- means you have to redo Win updates from November (perhaps total 3 or so)
- may mean you have to set up or Wifi connection again (if you have Wifi)

It's very useful to keep a bootable version of Win 10 for this and other reasons.

I recommend for safety that you create a disk image of what you have now BEFORE doing this, and maintain your disk image ... Read more

As I was researching what to do, I discovered that Windows 7 Enterprise and Professional have the ability to recognize RAW files in many digital cameras. Hi
please sit well on your chair:
IN LOGON SCREEN, WINDOWS TYPES USERNAME & PASSWORD AND ENTERS ONE OF 2 ACCOUNTS AUTOMATICALLY !!!

It started since i installed CyberCaf'e Pro client and remobed it

What is CyberCaf'e Pro?
When you enter cybercaf'e for computer use -
There is this "master" computer which the receptionist is sitting at, and a bunch of "user" computers (for customers). The user computers are normally locked - kinda like screensaver and no user input allowed. The only way to use them is to activate them via the master computer. So when you go to the cybercafe and tell the receptionist you want to use a PC, she uses the master pc to unlock one of the user PCs for your use. The user pc, on purpose, automatically enters to the account it is installed on, to prevent you using other accounts When your time is up, you go to pay and leave, and the receptionist re-locks the computer.
The problem:
although i removed the client, restart follows me straight to the account which CyberCaf'e Pro client was installed on. When i changed the account password - i get password mismach. Something still types username & password.
How can i roll back? system restore, unfortunately, was disabled in installation

A:Strange windows behavior. experts please!

I presume you only removed the client software from the client PC. Were you able to remove the software from the master PC as well?

I've been using WLM ver. 9 for many years, but some functions, like the "undo" arrow, ceased working. So I just installed WLM 12. Strange thing happened to the Contacts; not all, but 98% of my contacts appear 3 times. I.e., there are two duplicates for every contact. When I open the Contacts folder, only one address exists there for each contact.

I started deleting the 2 duplicates, but I run a small business off this computer and have ~600 addresses in the Contacts folder. Now I have 1800 (!!), so I have to delete 12oo of them. That will quickly give me "typers cramp", so I'm wondering if there's any way to make WLM show only one address for each person. And, of course, the main question is why is WLM showing 3 of almost everybody???

P.S. Just observed another unexplainable thing. If I go to create a new e-mail and click "To:", the address list has NO duplicates. Only see the dups when I open Contacts from the WLM mail window. ??????????

Windows 7, 64 bit

I think this started the other day when I accidentally dislodged the power cable to my hard drive (I don't have the side back on my tower yet ). I had to do a repair which sort of fixed the problems I caused, but not quite. Now my mouse only intermittently works. Sometimes I'll be able to minimize/maximize/close windows, click in text entry windows, click on buttons... (in other words, normal behavior), then, without warning, the mouse will be unable to do any of the above. I can still navigate between windows with alt-tab and tab and enter works sometimes to activate buttons, but the mouse has no effect on text entry windows, buttons... I have to ctrl-alt-del and the mouse usually will work there to restart the computer. I ran a Malwarebytes scan and scanned my whole system for viruses (Panda AV Free). I did a checkdisk, tried to repair with the Windows 7 disk. I am working to back up my computer because I fear I will have to reformat. Is there anything else I should try before getting that drastic? I'm pretty sure it's not a mouse issue (like dead battery or something) because the mouse moves around the screen, clicking the button just has no effect. Sometimes if I wait a few minutes it will start responding normally for a few minutes.

Hi All

I am experiencing a weird issue on an XP machine I use for work.

Despite having the windows taskbar 'locked', all my apps open up with their minimise/maximise/close buttons hidden behind this taskbar.

I am one of those who choose to locate the taskbar at the top of the screen rather than on the bottom.

So, if I want to move an app, or resize the window - quite simply, I can't do this without first moving the system taskbar to the left or right position - which then gives me access to the top bar of any running application. I can then access and thus move/adjust the application position.

Does anyone know why I might be experiencing this weird behavior and if so, how I reset it back to default please?

I have tried turning the machine off and restarting - to no avail.

Many thanks all.

Hi folks, I am starting to suspect the presence of malware on my machine, due to some odd behavior of Windows Update, as well as issues with the Action Center.  If I look at my Update History, it will give a blank list and perpetually state "You have not tried to install any updates".  However, if I instead look at my "Installed Updates" list, it will show many older items.

When I start the Windows Update Troubleshooter, it will return a message stating it found and repaired a problem with update ("Potential Windows Update Database error detected 0x80070490"), but the behavior of Windows Update doesn't change (and the troubleshooter will re-find the same problem each time re-run).

Norton 360, Norton's Bootable Recovery Tool, Windows Defender Offline, Malwarebytes, and ESET's online scanner all give a clean bill of health.  Any suggestions on how to proceed, short of a format and re-install?

Hello All,

A while back, probably about a month ago, my computer got infected. After some work, and frustration I was able to clean it up by running MBAM. I believe it was similar to the Smart Security or Security Defender virus. I thought I lost all files, but turns out they were just set to hidden. I went through both sets of instructions again, MBAM did not find anything.

The issue is, programs that were installed when the computer got infected are not able to run. I had Firefox and Chrome installed, neither would run after I got it cleaned up. Internet Explorer would run. I was using Microsoft Security Essentials for AV. After cleaning up, it was not able to connect to download new updates.

I downloaded Avast after that, and was able to receive new updates, so I've been using that. I've tried to install Google Chrome and it's still the same behavior. It will not launch.

Any advice is appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Hi guys,
I'm not even completely certain how to describe this problem. My friend has a win 7 system running without trouble (updated antivirus program running).
A month or so ago, he shut down his system while he went for vacation. When he returned, the computer had reverted to a previous time. List a lot of documents, some programs etc. I couldn't find anything wrong. Antivirus scan was negative. No system restore options worked (I tried but each attempt ended in "unable to restore - try another point").
We moved on until yesterday, after completing a marathon MS office word session using Teamviewer to remotely collaborate. Before he could email me the document (we ran a Verizon FiOS optimizer program), the program completed with a reboot. After the reboot, his computer had reverted to a period PRIOR to the last problem time. Ie when an previous screen saver ran. He lost the critical document we had worked on for 4 hrs.
There never was any reboot screen that sounds at all like a system restore. He did not "click" any options post (or pre for that matter) boot.
I'm not near him to look more closely at his system. He isn't at all tech savvy. Any insights would be appreciated. I haven't got a clue what's going on. I've never seen this before.
Thanks
Doug

Hi everyone. My Thinkpad (Yoga 12.5, WINDOWS 10) screen acting strangely. It works, then touch function stops. It starts working again when I do enable/disable HID touchscreen in device manager. Works sometimes 10 minutes, sometimes an hour or more, then stops again. Power saving option is OFF on this device. Drivers are all updated to the latest through Lenovo driver update process.Since it is partially fixed by driver enable / disable function, I suspect it is software and not hardware issue, however can not pinpoint it. Other clues to solve this mistery: 1)It is plugged in (not on battery) 2) HID-compliant touch screen driver is Microsoft version (10.0.16299.15) Driver date 6/21/2006 (Maybe old?) I hope somebody can help.Thank you.

On Friday, I had no Internet connection, and the upper-right-corner Comodo window showed an hourglass where the Comodo secure programs window should have been. I did a System Restore, and turned on Windows Defender. Then, after 50 minutes on the phone with AT&T, I had Internet access through IE8 only on Windows XP. However, everything else acts like there's a TDSSserv.sys rootkit: I cannot update security software, and Firefox, Chrome and Safari have no Internet connection. I looked under Show Hidden Devices and Non-Plug and Play Drivers, but no sign of an enabled TDSSserv.sys was to be found. TDSSserv.sys is not there either. The virus vaults of Malwarebytes and AVG are now empty. However, I am not being redirected on IE8. Whatever it is, is hiding from Kapersky TDSSKiller, SUPERAntiSpywarePro, etc.
Thank you.

I am Elle and I will be helping you out with your problem. Firstly, you should know that we are working with specific tools which are used to identify the possible threats present on your system so I will analyze the results they produce.

The current state of the files on your system might have changed so we need to get a clear look on that aspect. DO NOT bring any changes to the system except the ones I tell you to as that may produce more damage than helping us.

Does something seem odd with this file structure?

There's a ton of files listed in the top level directory that I would normally think should be down in the Windows level.

The view here is with hidden files and folders OFF.

I recently had an infection located in this same folder with a similar type of file name ( .sys )

Inside each of these folders, there's another folder with a long Alpha numeric name. In that folder is an application that matches the name of the first folder.

I've never seen this before.

The .sys files are drivers and should probably be in folder C:\Windows\System32 or SysWOW64. It means some owner/parent rules got trashed or a problem with the disk indexes. You might want to run SPF /SCANNOW.

SFC /SCANNOW Command - System File Checker

Hello,

I'm using IE 6 (Build 6.0.2800.1106.xpsp2.021108-1929 to be exact).

I have configured it to prompt for passwords and to save logins and and passwords....

However, it never seems to store them ... and it alway prompts for passwords again even for logins for which passwords have been prompted for and stored earlier...

Also, there is another irritation which I remember encountering before on some other computer... when I do Control N to open a new window... the status bar does not show... it has to be manually enabled in View/Status Bar each time to show it....

This is in a new computer with Win XP Tablet PC edition Version 2002 Service Pack 1. On my other computer which has Win 98 with IE 5, I don't have any of these problems for the logins / passwords etc...

*Sigh*... the good old days @@

Thanks in Advance...

A:Strange behavior from IE 6

Have a look here:

OLEXP: Your Dial up Password Is Not Retained in Windows 2000 or Windows XP (Q264672)

As for the Status bar issue:

1) With (only one) IE open, click View, select: Status Bar
2) Right-click on IE's Toolbar and select: "Lock the Toolbar"
3) Hold down the Ctrl key and click the close button (upper right)
4) Open Windows Explorer, click View, select: Status Bar
5) Right-click on Explorer's Toolbar and select: "Lock the Toolbar"
6) Click Tools | Folder Options | View tab
7) Click the "Apply to all folders" button.
8) Hold down the Ctrl key and click the close button (upper right)

Cheers,

Hi all
First post, so hello everyone,

I have a basic mp3 player ( ALBA ) 1 gb. The player works well and I've had it nearly 6 years.

But when I connect it to my laptop (running Vista Ultra) via usb and format it there's 996mb of free space.

Lately when adding an audiobook which is, say 185mb long, it will only load two thirds of the audiobook and a small window appears saying can't create no.178 (or stops transfering at 178 when theres 240 parts to the audiobook.

Another strange thing is that I've had "Harry Potter and The Deathly Hallows" (995mbs) on the player and it loaded without a hitch. (May have been magically shortened to get it all on) some how I don't think thats the case.

But why does it accept a large audiobook and then wont even accept just over 100 mbs.

I was thinking that the formatting application on Vista is at fault.

Any ideas on this one please.

Thanks.

When I visit a website, and I check my active connections on computer
(netstat)
it shows numerous TIME_WAIT connections to that site's IP address
Doesn't on all, but for a few.

Its gotten to the point that my computer(s) are registering so many connections to their server, they think I am ping hammering them or soemthing, and then denying my IP address.
A release/renew of my ISP's ip address ( using DSL so it changes everytime ) allows me to get back on to that site, but after about 1 - 3 mins, it auto blocks my IP address again.

Scanned comptuer(s) with numerous programs and nothing found

This is happening on a XP computer and a VISTA computer on my network
Does any one have any idea what could be causing this behavior ? or find a program that can tell me ( monitor )
