Lenovo u410 no sound from internal speaker

Q: Lenovo u410 no sound from internal speaker

Hi, I've been searching google thin and tried numerous fixes and nothing so far has worked. I just bought an used Lenovo ideapad u410 and a week later the internal speakers suddenly stopped working. External/headphones still work flawlessly, but the internal speakers won't make a sound. So far I've tried these things:Updating drivers manually.Deleting drivers and let windows update them itself.Deleting drivers and installing the default windows drivers.Checking the internal speakers is set as standard, not muted and that the jackstick isn't stuck or jammed.Restoring the computer to factory settings.Restart audio services.I probably tried some other stuff too that I forgot. When I got the computer there was windows 10 installed, so I tried to do a clean install of windows 8.1. This made the sound come back for a few days, then it disappeared again like with windows 10. I then tried upgrading back to windows 10, didn't work. Rolled back to 8.1, didn't work. I'm considering doing a clean install of windows 7 at this point, because I'm desperate. At the momemt I got 8.1 installed and I have tried installing and deleting the drivers numerous times, with no success.Anyone got any ideas as to what I can do next besides doing a clean install of windows 7?

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

If you right click on the speaker icon in the tray and select playback devices, do your internal speakers show up there with a Green check mark, and if not, if you right click in the Playback window and select Show Disabled Devices and Show Disconnected Devices. do your internal speakers show as disabled? If so, right click on them and select enable and then set them as the default. Also try disabling the other playback devices (unplug them too) to see if that helps. It sounds like yoiu may have already checked that, and it is not the issue, espeically since it sounds like (no pun intented) ,that you have restored the system, but it never hurts to check. Drivers and software aside, most sound card jacks mechanically mute the internal speakers when an external jack is pugged in, so perhaps the jack itself is broken and is not switching back to the internal speakers when the headphones are unplugged. .

hi dharamc,

Welcome to Lenovo Community Forums!

Have you tried checking this issue under the BIOS mode.
Power ON the computer and start hitting F2.

If the problem is visible under BIOS, then don't mind the driver as the problem might be the GPU or the LCD screen.
to isolate the issue further you can use an external monitor.

If the problem is not visible under an external monitor, then you have a problem with the GPU

Let us know your findings
Cheers!

I, too, have had the same issue that users in this thread are reporting. I have a U410 bought in the spring of 2014. There was a break at the hinge and the screen is separating from the lid. I've never dropped the computer, this issue arose one day after general, every day use. I've attached photos of the issue for others to reference.

Sent to the 'authorized' repair centre in NOrth Bay Canada. Turn around time is 7 business days. All I get is a message - waiting for parts.  This is terrible when a large company like Lenovo can't get parts where needed.I am going through a very rough time as my business is affected

tiru1973I would like to know is window 8.1 is compatible to dell inspiron n5010 or not
Hello. Dell does not support Win8.1 on the Inspiron 15 N5010, however, the audio should work.
Your laptop has IDT audio hardware on the motherboard, but there is not a Win8.1 audio driver available for it, so install the IDT Win7 audio driver into Win8.1, by using compatibility mode.
1. Download and save the audio driver to your desktop or any convenient location on the hard drive.  2. Double click on the new folder to extract (unzip) the driver files.3. The extractor wizard will create a new folder for the driver files. It will be at "c:\dell\drivers\xxxxxx". Write down the exact location that the wizard creates. 4. If the driver begins to install automatically, halt (cancel) the installation.5. Browse to the driver files on the hard drive (the location you wrote down).6. Find the "setup.exe" file.7. Right click on setup.exe to open the context menu.8. Select the Properties.9. Select the Compatibility tab.10. Check the box "run this program in compatibility mode for"... Win7.
If the speakers still do not work after installing the IDT driver, revert the laptop back to Windows 7 if possible.
If the speakers still do not work after reverting to Win7, test the speakers for failure by running either the audio test in the ePSA test, or by failing the color bar test in  the PSA test {Your laptop will have either the ePSA test or the older PSA test.) Instruc... Read more

the case speaker doesnt rely on your sound card, all it provides is basically beeps and such. For sound from your sund card you need external speakers connected to the sound card sockets.

sound on external speaker.

Please help

A:No internal or external speaker sound

first go to control panel and check the audio option of your computer and see if the computer recognizes a sound card.

after clicking audio go ahead and check the settings. if everything is grayed out it means you don't have sound card installed, you need to check device manager and see if you have your sound card there and if see if it's installed with the correct driver.

check also if the external speakers are connected to the right audio port at the back of pc.

hope this helps!

I have this old computer which I dont use anymore, but there is something about it that left me quite confused

It has a sound card, but the external spreakers produce no sound. Instead, the internal speaker produces all the sounds (which gives terrible quality because the case is closed, and its a crappy speaker anyways). I never changed any of the computers settings, but one day it was like that and never changed back.

Any explanations (I dont use the computer and prolly wont (it doesnt even have an OS installed (ready for trash))?

Just want to figure this one out. Its an old compaq p-i with < 128 RAM (I think its like 32MB)

To make a long story short, I've been asked to help fix a friends mom's U410 laptop which wasnt activiting Windows 8.1 properly (Was Windows 8 OOB). After struggling with the activation for a few hours, I backed up the data and decided to just run the Lenovo one key recovery. During the recovery process, the installation had failed. When I attemped to reboot, no Lenovo splash screen was loading - just a black screen (although i can hear the cooling fan start, and hear the harddrive spin up. I tried to access the boot menu thru the novo button, and nothing would load; still a black screen. After researching for a few more hours, I had found multiple threads about bios updates required to be able to access bios with windows 8, and other threads about gpus on these units booting to a second screen (which i did test, and the second monitor does indicate a signal). None of the solutions on those threads have given positive results.   Basically, I've run out of options and am looking for some suggestions. The only thing that shows up on the display at anytime is the small blue novo menu when the button is pressed (normal start up, bios setup, boot menu, system recovery - all of which just leave a black screen). Thanks.

Hi I just got a new Lenovo Yoga 710 14IKB today and i've been noticing that sometimes when I'm watching video's on Youtube the sound only starts playing after 5 seconds. So the video is already playing but the sound starts at 0:05 (the delay is always the same amount of time). I don't have this problem with every video, it seems to be a random thing and it only happens when watching videos on speaker, the problem does not happen when I'm listening through my earphones. It's not a major problem but it's still quite annoying. Is there a way I can fix this myself? I'm not realy knowledgeable when it comes to these kind of things, the only thing I know how to do is reinstall the drivers.

I am running Windows 10 Professional with current up-to-date updates on my Dell Inspiron Laptop.

Several days ago I noticed that plugging in current headset no longer muted the internal speaker. I know that it is not the headset as it works perfectly on another computer.

Doing a web search has not resulted in finding the problem, let alone a solution. Further my anti-virus is up-to-date, as are the microphone and speaker drivers.

Pointers in the direction of a solution will be much appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

A:External Speaker Fails to Mute Internal Speaker

What audio codec does your laptop use?

It will be listed in device manager. The VEN DEV combo will be enough information.

You'll find it in the device properties details tab, specifically, the "Hardware IDs" section.

It will resemble this:

Code:
HDAUDIO\FUNC_01&VEN_10EC&DEV_0288&SUBSYS_10EC0191&REV_1000
Usually the audio codec chip itself will detect an external speaker is plugged in. Have you checked your audio device's configuration software? It should have a shortcut in the classic control panel.

Hello Sorry If this is in the wrong place but I couldn't find a board for IdeaPad 700. I've had this laptop for a decent while (almost a year) and although it hasn't really bothered me much in the past, it's really starting to bother me now as I'm now usually in an area with more people (libraries, lecture theatres etc.). Everytime I start up my laptop, I can hear a constant crackling sound (which would continue until I shut down the laptop but would continue again right as I turned it back on) and sometimes a beep or two but mainly from underneath my laptop where the fans are located or where my right speakers are located. I'm not sure if it is a sound card issue or a driver issue as I don't hear anything like that through my headphones and the sound is perfect, however, the crackling noise still continues on my laptop itself. When I play music or watch any video through my speakers, the sound from the left speaker seems fine but the sound from the right speakers sometimes becomes distorted and you can hear like a quiet mumbling sound of the music or video underneath. I've also noticed that when I am using my scroll wheel on my mouse or scrolling using my touch pad, the crackling gets louder but as soon as I stop scrolling, it goes back to its "normal" crackling sound. I'm not sure if this is enough information but I really have no other idea of how to accurately describe the sound. I've also tried changing driver versions but it did not seem to work or do anything... Read more

Hi VinceZent ,

Welcome to the Community Forums.

Try booting on the BIOS using the Novo key (item6 page6) to turn on and press a bit on the scrolling on the touchpad.
Check if same sound appears booting on another live media is available.

Reviewing the placement of the touchpad to the systemfan and right speakers , I think mechanically is an issue with the fan. Pressure can be done by the touchpad passing it to the fan and underlying structure including the speakers as ,maybe just a cable on the wrong place since expected that it would be silent on this model.

You don't have to change on the softwares but I would encourage you giving technical support a call for in warranty service and option that you can decide on.

Hope this help answer your query.

Hi-

Device manager shows: 2 high definition audio devices (not realtek). One for the rear jacks and the other for ATPI Inernal ATPI jack. No playback device listed for the front jacks.

I tried uninstalling and reinstalling the devices but the front jacks wont install

Any suggestions would be appreciated! Thanks!

A:HP400 sound from internal speaker and rear jacks but not front jacks

High Definition Audio Drivers are only the generic, basic function, Windows installed sound drivers. They are not the full feature drivers that the hardware drivers provide. Check HP for a correct sound driver, if available.

ATPI (ATAPI) suggests this is an old Windows XP PC that was upgraded. There may not be any better drivers than the generic ones you have now.

Also check the front panel audio connection to the motherboard (reseat the connector).

I would hear a crackling sound emitted from the speakers sometimes when I scrolled with the touchpad or the touchscreen. I do seem to be able to get sound when plugging in headphones (but the sound quality isn't good and there is static interference sound). Troubleshooting steps I have already taken: (Not listed in specific order, have retried many steps in different combinations) Static Discharge: I disconnected the AC power cord, turned off machine etc, then pressed down the power button and held for 30 seconds.Installed LSB: Conducted all diagnostic scans for hardware and software. I was not able to get sound from my speakers regardless of which sound drivers were installed. I also implemented the suggested changes to my sound settings (i.e disabling sound effects, dolbi audio effects, etc)Downloading and reinstalling all firmware/software from Lenovo: Installed up to date BIOS updates, chipset, audio controllers, drivers, etc.Inspected the internals: MOBO, wiring. Everything appears fine.Purchased and installed a new set of speakers- Just to ensure it was not a hardware related issue.Factory resetAs of today, the speaker popping/cracking sound is gone but I still am not able to get any sound. Does anybody have any additional suggestions? Fn+F12 doesn't even change the message at startup screen. I suspect there is something to do with Windows 8 installation in UEFI mode. Since then I have this BIOS problem. Trying to disconnect BIOS battery along with all other power source. It shows a checksum error and message "press F2 for boot options." So I press F2, but it just goes back to Windows again. After that, there is no more error message but the problem is still there. Welcome To Lenovo Community

For U410 the default option to enter Bios is Fn +F2 if it is set to hotkey mode under bios
If it is set to legacy mode you need to use F2 ,

Since you have tried both the options , now other way of checking will be to disconnect hard drive and ssd  from the system and check by pressing Fn+F2  or F2

It is recommended to visit nearest Lenovo local service center to have system verified

Hope This Helps

Hi, I bought a Lenovo U410 sometime in July 2012 (bought it back home in Malaysia). About a week or two after I bought it, the laptop sleeve cover came off, causing the laptop to fall to the floor. But fortunately, other than a small dent (pictured) at one corner of the laptop, everything seems to work okay. [well, if you plug in an earphone, only the right side would play but I'm not too concerned about that] I've enjoyed using the laptop, everything works fine & easy for me. I use it mainly for my studies (I'm a rising junior in Madison) and occassionally some photos & video processing. Other than The Sims, I never actually used my laptop for 'gaming' stuff (was planning to soon though). But recently, in the past few months, I realized that there's something wrong with the laptop. It connects to WiFi just fine and everything, but whenever I connect my external hard drive to my laptop, my Wifi would disconnect automatically & wouldn't reconnect until I remove the hard drive. This happen even when I connect a USB port to the laptop, but doesn't happen when I connect a small USB pendrive or my phone (Samsung Note 4) or a bluetooth speaker. Not sure what's the problem with it, and I'm a noob when it comes to things like this, so I would really appreciate your help. Thanks in advance!

Hello to all, The Keyboard of my lenovo U410 suddenly stopped working properly. It's not like the whole keyboard doesn't work, but some keys do work, and some don't. (on the top row, only 5 & 6 work. below that only t & y work. But below that all the keys a to l work!)I tried to download the drivers from the Lenovo website already, but these are the same as the drivers that were already on my computer I believe. That doesn't work. System recovery (to the system status of a week ago) doesn't work either.Does anyone have any ideas? it might be that this is a hardware problem, but I've had several problems with my touchpad in the past too. And then in the end with a lot of trying, it worked again. So before I will have the keyboard replaced, can anyone help me with ideas, how to possibly fix this? I'm also fine with recovering the whole system while I have a backup of all my files. I just don't really know how to do this without loosing windows really. Thanks in advance. Regards,Onnea

I have a question about upgrading my U410. I currently have installed the 24 gb mSATA SSD that came with the system and it is being utilized as a cache using the intel rapid storage setup and the 2.5 slot is occupied with the 1TB HDD that came with the system. I now want to purchase a Samsung 850 Evo and realize that it comes in both Sata and mSata variants. My question is on the U410 system would there be any speed benefit (assuming the same specs for the two variants of the Samsung SSD) in going with the mSata vs Sata version? Specfically, assuming all other variables equal, is the mSata pcie port slower than the Sata? And am I correct in assuming that the mSata pcie port will operate at Sata III speeds given an mSata drive that supports this output spec? And thus there is no benefit in choosing the Sata version vs the mSata? I would like to keep my 1TB HDD and install a 256gb mSata EVO drive to run the OS and main programs on, but will elect to replace the 2.5 HDD instead and get the Sata version of the EVO drive if the mSata pcie port will not equal the performance of the 2.5 Sata port. Thanks!

Hi there, I've repaired a broken Lenovo "U410 Touch" with "U410"-parts (LCD, backcover, hinges, and front bezel had to be replaced). Everything went fine, but there's still the loose, ripped up cable that was already loose before my repair.I see only two options for the cable: the white 2-pin socket "CN21", where I couldn't find out what should be connected there, or the 2nd antenna-cable. But the cable does not really look like an antenna cable, it seems to have no shield. Please help me identify the cable or the connector. I've searched a lot for images, no luck.  You can see the large LCD-connector for orientation:??

Hello everyone, I would like to share my Lenovo Customer Service experience. While on holidays in Poland last August, I decided to buy a new laptop in one of the big electronic stores. The laptop, however, developed a fault on the second day. I thought it was a case of bad drivers causing the problem. After I returned from my holidays, the fault was still there.  I contacted the Lenovo Customer Service who requested a proof of purchase. I explained that the laptop was bought in Poland on holidays and sent them on the receipt. A day later, I got an email saying: "Your machine has been booked in for a full repair at our service centre. Thank you for your proof of purchase. In 2-3 working days you will receive a letter containing instructions regarding the booking of your collection. The letter will also contain very important terms and conditions in particular with regards to data loss. Please follow the instructions and your machine will be repaired under warranty." A few days later the machine was taken off me by a DPD courier for almost 2 weeks. In the meantime I had no other option but to use my father's laptop to do my final year college project. I was delighted when I got the email: "We have completed the servicing of your item.Your item is now being packed and prepared for dispatch. You can track your package online..." However, 30 mins after using the "newly repaired" laptop, the stripy screen came back! Needless to... Read more

A:Truly Terrible Customer Service- Problems With Lenovo U410

I find it absolutely deplorable of Lenovo that there has been no posted response to this customer service issue. I have been trying to decide for a while now if it was worth purchasing a Yoga 2 Pro as it looked to have all the specs of a PC Hybrid I was hoping for. Well....how wrong could I have been...I had no idea how appalling the customer service is from this company! Firstly, in the UK...there have been some nightmare stories of faulty items and ridiculous product shipping delays that just seem to keep changing without any thought for the consumer in explaining what the hold up is. If you want to see a fantastic daily updated example of this alone just have a look at the Lenovo UK Facebook product page. Just reading it for ten minutes is tragic. There are so many upset customers in there that it almost seems comical.  The shipping delays are pathetic, they will glady take people's money (including warranties on items that arent there!) and hold it in the Lenovo bank accounts but the slow service and response to those with faults displays a complete disregard for the consumer. I can understand a company being unable to keep up with high demand of a product if it is very good and in demand but this needs to be addressed with admission in communication. Simply advertising a product that people cannot access and dealing with the irate customer-in-waiting afterwards is not acceptable. Let it be known that Lenovo through their own incompetence have lost a c... Hi, I have bought a U41 series. It gave me the problem as U410 well having the hinge giving me cracking sign if the lid was closed fully and to be open up again. The problem came in JUST AFTER the warranty and the operator also told me that is will not be cover under warranty. I mean, it is a manufacturing defect, where I have never dropped my laptop before, why would it not be cover under warranty? And should all Lenovo user expect ALL Lenovo products to only function as much time as the warranty (1 year)? I am very disappointed with Lenovo products, the way you resolve my inquiry and not taking any responsibility towards the manufacturing defects. For your reference of U410 defects please refer to this link below:https://forums.lenovo.com/t5/Lenovo-U-and-S-Series-Notebooks/Re-Lenovo-Ideapad-U410-and-U410-Touch-b... Also, the issue was not resolved as no satisfactory answer has been given to the thread shown.

Hello all, I am recently having some inconsistent display issues with my Lenovo U410 laptop i7 1TB with a Windows 8 PRO upgrade (came with windows 7).  When I press the Power Button on my laptop to put it to sleep, the Screen turns black as if it is off, but the Power & Battery LEDs on the front of the laptop remain on, as well as the LED on the power button.  However, when I try to wake my laptop, there is no response on the screen (remaining black as if it is off).  The internal fan is running, however I receive no feedback when "blindly" trying to input my password. I've tried to turn the power off and back on to no avail.  I've also removed the power source and held the power button for a couple of seconds and that did not solve the issue either. I've tried connecting the laptop to a screen via HDMI (since there is no other AV port on the device), but there was no signal being sent through.  This is an inconsistent issue that began yesterday 6/11/2013.  When the laptop is left alone for a little and is turned on again, the display works, but after closing the lid (sleep) or pressing the button, the display fails to turn on upon awakening. In most recent circumstances, Today (6/12/2013) I was installing a Windows update that required my computer to restart.  When the update configured perfectly BEFORE it was restarting, but AFTER the restart, my internal fan began to work, but the display was not on. Does...
