Request to enable scrolling and middle click functionality at same time in Trackpoint's mid button

Q: Request to enable scrolling and middle click functionality at same time in Trackpoint's mid button

Hi Lenovo, Currently the Trackpoint's middle button can only do either scrolling or middle mouse button click in Windows. This behavior can be set in lenovo vantage or mouse settings. Could you provide option to enable both scrolling and middle mouse click functions at same time? In linux this is already supported out of the box for a long time. The only workaround in windows is by using third party software called TPMiddle, but this software only works with Synaptics trackpoint, it doesn't work with Elan or ALPS trackpoint.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Currently my TrackPoint middle button does scrolling as desired but when I release it, it pops up a right-click menu.  I can't figure out how to turn off the right-click functionality.  Any ideas? I believe I have fully explored the entire Mouse properties dialog from Control Panel, including the advanced one with the special TrackPoint options.  I tried any option that looked even vaguely related, and nothing helped. Thanks in advance!

Yes, there was a post several years ago describing this same issue which was supposedly fixed with an update of the Synaptics driver.  However, I am seeing this issue again on my X270 Windows 10 x64 Pro with latest driver version 19.3.4.219. If I set the mouse pointer size to something larger than default "1" it stays at the larger size until I use the trackpoint middle button to scroll.  the pointer then shrinks back down to size "1".  Just as with the previous report of this issue if I set the middle button function to "click" rather than "scroll" the pointer retains its larger size.  I constantly use trackpoint scrolling so that is not really a fix for me. Has anyone else seen this issue recently and perhaps found a fix that allows continued use of trackpoint scrolling with a larger pointer? Thanks.

I just got my brand new L13 Yoga, and so far I'm liking it.However, as someone who frequently uses the middle mouse button to open new tabs, I was quite disappointed to find, that this isn't supported here. I did reinstall Windows right when I got it, but I ran the Lenovo Bridge and Updater just after to get all the latest drivers. There is simply no way to enable middle mouse click in the software and I hate it. The button is currenly only used to scroll with the knob. I suppose this is more of a feature request, so I'm sorry if this is the wrong place. Any help is appreciated though. Kind regardsZitrooone

Hello, Is there a way to have both - scrolling with trackpoint while holding the middle mouse button - and - being able do a middle click with the middle mouse button? I can accomplish this easily under Linux like it is described here. But under Windows it seems to be impossible. I can only have either middle clicking or trackpoint scrolling. I need both.  If anyone knows a solution to this please let me know. Walter (I have a X200s and Windows 7 x64 installed)

After all the automatic Windows updates it stopped working. I tried uninstalling the driver and downloading fresh lenovo new one, but nothing... can someone here please help me? Hi Everyone, A couple days ago I noticed that my middle mouse button which I use for scrolling started to activate the Context Menu (aka anytime you right-click, a menu pops up). Then I noticed that my right-button will also activate scrolling as well. Is this a hardware issue? I've already tried reinstalling the drivers and played around with the settings to no avail!  Anyone experience a similar issue? Cheers,

Hey folks, The middle button for trackpoint doesn't work. All drivers are up to date. Middle button is enabled for scrolling, not clicking. Middle button works when switched over for clicking. I guess I need to stop installing drivers...  I unstalled the latest Synaptics UltraNav drivers for my X1 yoga today as advertised by System Update (Thinkvantage and companion).  Now it's super-finicky, difficult to scroll on the trackpad, but even worse I can't set the middle button on the trackpoint to scroll anymore!  It just resets to "middle-click" in Lenovo Settings.  I'm a bit beside myself because now I have a yoga that does not yoga (touchscreen does not work after updates) and now I can't even consistantly scroll  I tried to uninstall it as per the readme that came with the update but that does not even work, complaining that a dll file is not a valid windows application.

Hi,

On my X1Y3 it started about a month ago.  Bascially after anywhere from 5-30 minutes of the computer turning on my trackpoint icon gets stuck with the middle scrolling point icon anytime im in a text field.  It acts like the middle track point buttoin is depressed even when its not.  see below picture circled in yellow.  This is not related to a specific browser.  It happens in Chrome, IE and Edge.  Synaptics driver version 19.3.4.224.  I updated to the current driver about 3 weeks ago when this problem 1st started.  It happened on the prior driver too.

I dont know whether this post belongs in hardware or software section but here goes...

When I use the laptop, the most I miss is the middle mouse button. The one which makes me open webpages in a new tabs while using firefox in a jiffy. Is there anyway I can get that function in a laptop? Some program which can sense some combination of keystrokes as the middle button Eg: Ctrl+Left button on the touchpad?

(I do have a USB mouse which I do connect to the laptop at home, but at work it is a pain without it.)

Any ideas?

A:Middle mouse button functionality in a laptop

I searched a lot for the answer to this problem and at last I figured it out.

You have the middle mouse button and more in your laptop. You must have to unlock all of these features. Go to control panel and then select mouse. Here go to the last option on the left "device settings". Then inside the device settings you will see "settings". Now explore all the options and you will see that you can do so many things with your touchpad including th middle mouse function

On my X1 Carbon 5th gen (Windows 10), when changing 'Mouse Properties' => ThinkPad (tab) => TrackPoint => 'Middle Button Action' to be 'Use as middle click' (instead of 'Use for scrolling'), it works for a few minutes, but then, without me doing anything, reverts back to 'Use for scolling' automatically. I tried this solution: https://forums.lenovo.com/t5/Windows-10/FIXED-Middle-Click-Functionality-Disabled-on-Windows-10-upgr... (namely: use regedit to change "TrackPointMode" from 00001214 to 00002214 under HKEY_USERS\S-1-5-21-<....numbers...>\SOFTWARE\Synaptics\SynTPEnh\UltraNavPS2). The effect was that, after a reboot, I manage to get the "Use as middle click" behaviour, but, then, again, only for a few minutes, after which it indepndently goes back "Use for scrolling". Any idea how to make the "use as middle click" behaviour stick? Thanks!

For years this icon, called "scrolling icon", has appeared on the middle-button click on TrackPad buttons ? providing for a useful visual feedback:  For some reason, this has been removed on X1 Extreme Synaptics driver. Until November 2018 I have successfully managed to install Synaptics 19.3.4.201 on X1 Extreme so as to get a proper Control Panel management for Synaptics instead of an awkward Windows Universal App AND a scrolling icon working, too. This driver 19.3.x.x (not only 201, but all other consequitve version) has stopped working after certain BIOS and Synaptics Firmware upgrade: installing 19.3.x.x instead of 19.5.19.33 gives TrackPoint and TouchPad halt since November 2018. There is a registry key which allows to turn OFF the scrolling icon on drivers 19.3.x.x: https://superuser.com/questions/473325/disable-scrolling-icon . It does NOT help to turn it ON for 19.5.x.x. Any help on either getting the icon back or installing the 19.3.x.x drivers would be awesome. The latter would be more preferrable as I have trying out older drivers in a hope of getting rid of Trackpoint drift ? unsucessfully and only until they've broken 19.3.x.x drivers to work on X1 Extreme.

I just want to report that the newest touchpad driver brakes native windows middle-click scrolling. What I'm talking is this:1. Swich off all advanced features in the TouchPoint setting to get back a middle button. BTW, how on earth it is possible that the default setting "steals" the middle button. Going for the Nr. 1. PC maker and forgetting a stupid default settings in a Synaptics driver is a joke.  2. Now, try scrolling in any native windows application like Chrome, Firefox, etc. The quick way of scrolling is to push the middle button while scrolling. It had always worked before. Now this way is broken. Now, the only way for scrolling is to the:1. push middle button to enter scolling mode2. move mouse3. push again to exit scrolling mode This scolling mode has never been a good way to scroll, but the quick way is broken with the latest driver. I'm using a W520 with Windows 7, 64-bit. Broken driver: Version 16.2.5.0

I have a similar problem as the OP: after today's update, my Touchpad is not functioning properly anymore. Scrolling of any sort on the Touchpad seems to have been disabled. As I do not have a mouse attached, I am forced to use the Trackpoint set's middle button and then move my cursor around to scroll. I checked my Control Panel settings and both two-finger and single-finger Touchpad scrolling are enabled via the settings. Also I don't know if this is relevant, but it seems like the option to double-tap to bring up Lenovo SimpleTap has also randomly been disabled... W530, Windows 7 x64.

Hi Everyone, I see that some changes were made to the TrackPoint in the newest UltraNav drivers package -- namely, there are no more customized options for stick scrolling with the TrackPoint. Is there any way to reset the middle button to perform a middle click rather than stick scrolling? I see that the Registry options are in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Synaptics, but there are so many options! Is there anyone out there who can help me with this? Thanks in advance! Side note: I considered the older UltraNav driver, but that doesn't have the Windows 8 charm bar feature. I also considered the latest driver from the Synaptics website, but it doesn't have the "prioritize for trackpoint" option and I feel that the palm rejection is inferior to that provided by the Lenovo one. Side note #2: My main reason for requesting this is to improve the scrolling experience with my ThinkPad. I've been able to optimize my touchpad scrolling with a modified version of TwoFingerScroll, and really need to do the same with my trackpoint. For the trackpoint in Windows 7, I liked DragToScroll, which I feel provides more sensitive scrolling than the one in the UltraNav driver in most applications.

Hi, hendhess

I'm not sure about fixing the issue through the registry, though I did find two threads on this issue that may be able to help you solve the issue. There's this one started by zsero that has some suggestions and the like. There is also this thread which is linked from zsero's. According to some, if every former Synaptics driver is removed and then the new one is installed, the middle-click functionality is restored, though this isn't universal.

Hope it helps,
Adam

I've never seen any other posts with that same problem so it may be intentionally built-in to that particular mouse to prevent others using your PC when you're away from it. Read it's instructions if you got any with it, it should tell you if it's got a built-in mouse lock, although that feature usually requires additional third-party mouse software to be installed to recognise when the appropriate buttons have been pressed.

If no instructions were supplied, go to it's manufacturer's website to see if it's mentioned there.

One of the more persistent (of several) problems plaguing my P50 (20EN) is the spastic, herky-jerky scrolling when using the TrackPoint with middle button. This is far and away the worst trackpoint I have ever used, and I've used a lot of trackpoints over the last 20 years. There are only two TrackPoint settings on this machine, and neither is relevant to this issue:? The 'ThinkPad' tab in the Windows 10 'Mouse Properties' panel has a checkbox to enable and disable TrackPoint globally and radio buttons to select the middle button function.? The Synaptics Control Panel has a slider for controlling the TrackPoint scrolling speed. TrackPoint has always stood out on my list of reasons for buying ThinkPads in the first place, so this is issue particularly poignant for me, and, frankly, I'm close to my wit's end on this one. Please, someone tell me there exists a solution.

Hi guys,my X250 laptop just got a factory repair, in wich they reset the whole system. Now I have a problem: When I try to scroll using my trackpoint and the scrolling button, it only works in some instances. I can scroll on websites in Firefox, but in lists it doesn't work anymore. Lists like my settings or the file explorer. That is pretty annoying. I guess it has something to do with the mouse being on a linked item. As the problem also appears in Firefox as long as my curser is over a clickable item wich contains a link. On items that are clickable, but don't "contain a link" in the sense that by right clicking it gives me options like "open link in another tab", scrolling still seems to work. That theory kind of contradicts that, in the file explorer, it doesn't seem to make any difference wether or not the curser is over something clickable or not. I think I have another clue: I am not sure about this, but I think the symbol that appears by the curser while using the scrolling key also changed. Advice would be greatly appreciated,David

When scrolling with the trackpoint, I find that the pages don't roll as smooth as the older Thinkpads did. My T410 scrolls much more smoothly than my X250, and I'm thinking that it is a driver issue. Has anyone fixed it? Also, as an aside, I've found that I could not play FPS games with trackpoint. The left and right buttons don't click immediately after typing. The settings for the Microsoft Precision Touchpad on my T470s include the option to reverse the normalling scrolling direction, called "natural scrolling".However, I do not see a similar option to do so for scrolling using the Trackpoint: I have gotten used to reverse-scrolling or "natural scrolling" thanks to my iOS devices, the option to reverse in Windows, and it messes with me when I have to think about it when using the Trackpoint. Is there a way to reverse the scrolling, perhaps via a registry key? Before Windows 10 introduced the feature for trackpads and mice, there was a way to enable reverse scrolling via scripting. I may have to try that for this. Should we ask Lenovo to include this optionin a driver update for Trackpoint devices?

A:Reverse scrolling direction when using Trackpoint

I can report that installing AutoHotkey and then using the following script: WheelUp::Send {WheelDown}ReturnWheelDown::Send {WheelUp}Return You can effectively reverse the scrolling direction on the Trackpoint. Install AutoHotkey and save the above as AutoHotkey.ahk in your Documents folder or where you install AutoHotkey. I would still prefer to have the option in the driver though.

Hello everyone, I searched a bit both these forums and others but haven't found the solution to this problem I'm experiencing. I recently bought a used T430 and I've been using it for the last couple of days, trying to get used to trackpoint and all. I performed a clean windows install and installed a Win 10 education my university provides. I followed the advice on Lenovo webpage about letting Windows update do its thing first and then run the Lenovo System Update utility to update drivers as necessary. Everything's working nicely other than some issues with the trackpoint buttons (the 3 buttons just below the space bar are called the trackpoint buttons I guess?)  Anyway, the issue is that before I did a fresh install, the middle button when pushed entered the scroll mode which then let me scroll using the trackpoint. Now it still enters the scroll mode but also does a right-click when I let go. This leads to an issue where a right-click is performed at every scroll step(if that makes sense) which leads to wonky scrolling. One other issue is that the right button does nothing at all. I expected the middle button to only have scroll functionality and the right button to simply right-click.  Things I've tried so far: - Manually removed the pointer device and ran Lenovo system update again to update the UltraNav drive, and also disabled auto-driver installation of windows update. The driver version installed by System Update is 19.0.17.115.&nb... Read more

I'm using the ultranav middle button to scroll (I live for this feature which is why I've been buying thinkpads since time immemorial) However, on the t460, scolling with the middle button/nubbin is painfully slow in Word 2007, and Adobe Acrobat/Reader is a nightmare. In Word its just slow and you have to use a lot of pressure on the nubbin (there appears to be no setting to change this). In Acrobat, it's agonizingly slow (in both Reader and Pro) and will "stick" on if you try to go to fast and just scrolling for multiple seconds after you release the button.  Stragely, the trackpad scrolling works fine in Word, though it is still bad in Acrobat.  In addition, the middle button scrolling will frequently slip and stop scrolling, sending the pointer to the bottom of the page.  Nubbin/middle button scrolling works (oddly) extremely well in Microsoft Edge... Please help! Middle button scrollig with the nubbin is the best feature on these machines.  Using: T460 Windows 10 64-bit with the latest drivers.

Good morning,

I'm trying to help my mother with her computer, which in the last day has developed an issue with pointing, clicking and highlighting text.

A few examples:
1. Left clicking on the right hand side scroll bar is inconsistent at best, and the only way to get a web page (or word document) to scroll down is to use the wheel on the mouse. Moving up leads to the same issues.
2. Clicking is delayed and/or improperly executed. Trying to press "send" on an email will take 2 or 3 times, for example. Or a click you made previously will execute a couple seconds later.
3. Highlighting text is also disjointed and/or disconnected from the movements of the mouse. It appears to be less impacted dragging and highlighting while moving the mouse from left to right than vice versa, but it still is not functioning properly. You can highlight parts of words, sentences or paragraphs, but it will let up or stop before you intend to.
4. Overall, she's reporting that the computer is moving slower.

In the last 12 hours, I've run Windows' version of a computer scan, and it came up with 12 errors and 6 that could not be fixed, but of course it doesn't list them for you (the fixed ones or the remaining issues). It also said there were over 200 registry items, but only 190 or so were repaired. Again, no details.

I also ran her AVG, which came up clean, and I downloaded Ad-Aware, which came up with what seemed to be 12 innocuous items and removed them all (mino... Read more

A:Mouse functionality with scrolling and highlighting impaired

Check your operating system's mouse pointer settings in Control Panel and try lowering the speed under the Pointer Options tab. When set too fast, the mouse may jump all over the desktop at the slightest touch. If you have a wireless mouse, low batteries can result in weak, mixed or no signals that can affect its functionality so start by replacing them. If you are using a ball mouse, remove it and clean the rollers as dirt and gunk will cause erratic behavior. If its an optical mouse, "jumpiness" and "jerky" movements can result if using it on a glossy surface or reflective mouse pad. In some cases using multiple or uneven mouse pads can produce the same results. As a test, try placing it on a piece of newspaper or rubberized pad to see if that resolves the problem. If that does not help, confirm that the mouse works on another machine. It is possible the mouse could be defective or has gone bad. Another thing to try is to use a different mouse or a PS2 adapter if its a USB mouse.

Hi all,

I am working on a project for elderly and people with disability. The project is on "re-adjusting" a normal computer mouse. Some of these folks can not double-click, nor hold the left-click down for dragging files/folders. I found the following codes for changing the middle-click to left-double-click. One is written in C# the other in CPP.

http://www.codeproject.com/KB/cs/MBtn2DblClick.aspx

http://www.codeproject.com/KB/cpp/MBtn2DblClickVC.aspx

This program would be very handy for them.

Regarding the 2nd part, what I am looking for, should work like the following:

1. Move the pointer on a file/folder
2. Press and release the Middle/Wheel Click
3. Move the pointer and it moves/drags the file/folder.
4. Press and release the click again and the pointer releases the file/ folder

This should work for the Windows environment. Does the description make sense?

Does anybody know if such a code has been written?

Thanks,

-Farzad

Last night (4/6/2017) an automatic Windows update just now decided to install the most recent Synaptics driver (titled Synaptics - Mouse - 1/11/2017 12:00:00 AM - 19.3.4.66), which apparently is nearly 3 months old at this point.  One thing this update seems to have fixed is an issue I?ve been having with my ThinkPads for upwards of 7 years ? randomly it resets my mouse wheel 'number of lines scrolled per notch' option back to 1 (I prefer 3) pretty much daily, which is a HUGE annoyance, so I?m very grateful for this update and I?d like to keep it. However, it also completely disabled middle click scrolling with my TrackPoint (yes, I have ?Use for scrolling? checked under the TrackPoint settings).  The middle button does nothing now, unless I check ?Use as middle click?.  Rolling back the Synaptics driver to the previous one fixes this issue. Confoundingly, the TrackPoint scrolling with my ThinkPad Bluetooth keyboard still works fine. Has anyone else experienced this problem?  Any ideas how to re-enable TrackPoint scrolling on this newest driver? System details:ThinkPad P50 ?
