Random Program crashes & restricted Browsing

Q: Random Program crashes & restricted Browsing

Hi,

I have recently experienced some strange behavior on my Win XP Pro machine. I had a 'corrupt or missing' hal.dll file that required a repair in order to start back up. Upon start up things have progressively gotten worse.
-My Windows Firewall would randomly get turned 'Off'
-Google Installer and ViewMgr would 'encounter a problem' and then close

Sensing something was clearly wrong, I rebooted and ran MacAfee. MacAfee found elements of the TDS Trojan which were then deleted. The behavior still persisted.

At present, I cannot go to any websites that offer 'online virus scans'. My browsers (IE and Firefox) say the websites are unavailable. I was finally able to load HiJackThis in safemode after renaming the install file.

I have attached the outputs in Safe Mode and after a Normal Boot up.

I appreciate any help/advice that you may be able to provide. Thank you.

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

A: Random Program crashes & restricted Browsing

I wanted to apologize for not following the specific instructions in my initial post. I have now run the Gmer and DDS tools (had to rename them as well!). Please let me know if you need any additional information. Thank you in advance!

Recently, my computer has started freezing while I'm browsing the web. No BSOD or resetting, it just freezes and I have to hold the power button to get it back.

I don't think it's over heating, or memory or any of that because I can happily play games hour hours with no issues. I can watch films, or streaming media for hours and it's fine. It only crashes while surfing or talking on Steam.

MSI P67C45 (still haven't got my B3 replacement :O)
i5 2500k (standard clock, with the 'turobo boost' ability engaged)
4gb (2x2) G.Skill Ripjaws X (I think. Can't remember freqs but I'll dig it out if somehow important)
Nvidia GTX260
Corsair F240 SSD (lucky competition win ) with the OS on
1TB HDD - got the pagefile set up on this drive so I don't burn the SSD

Don't know what else to add, but let me know if I've missed anything important.

Thanks for (potentially) helping!

Hello.
I am having some crazy BSODs and crashes in my PC since like one month ago. I've even bought a new PSU and reinstalled Windows (less than 24 hours ago), but nothing has changed. Actually, It just gets worse. When I play games, most games that require a good PC crash, like Team Fortress and CoD MW3 (hl2.exe has stopped working/iw5mp.exe has stopped working), and BSOD while playing Diablo III and GTA IV. These are like the only games I'm playing nowadays.

My PC Specs:
AMD Phenom II X4 965 Black Edition (Age: ≃ 8 months)
2x2 4GB DDR3 RAM (Age: ≃ 8 months)
Motherboard Biostar TA890GXB HD (Age: ≃ 8 months)
PSU Corsair TX650M (Age: ≃ 24 hours)
Graphics Card ATI Radeon HD 5770 VAPOR-X SAPPHIRE 1GB DDR5 (Age: ≃ 2-years-old)

The graphics card is the oldest component and I have had some BSODs that mentioned AMD .dll files, so I think it could be the problem, but anyway... Can any of you analyze it, please?

Hello Muggie and welcome to Sevenforums.

BSOD Report

There's a few things to look out for here, hopefully I'll get some conclusions on them.

Your BIOS64, is a Biostar product. I have yet no experience with this product, but it seems like it's some sort of an I/O driver. See if you're able to update it. BIOSTAR :: Download
Kaspersky, klif.sys, is a known BSOD causer. If you want a stable security software, you should go for software like MSE. Use the Kaspersky Uninstall Utility. If you have purchased Kaspersky, consider contacting their Support.

In the last few months, my homebuilt system has begin crashing / BSing at seemingly random times: web browsing, document editing, etc. It will occasionally come out of standby on its own, and crash sometime during the night. Many times it will simply crash with a scrambled screen (not BSOD) and the reboot two or three times on its own before completely booting into windows. It will also go days, sometimes weeks, without a crash. Attached is my zip file. It may not have a lot of collected data, as I ran CCleaner recently, but hopefully it is helpful. Thank you for any assistance with this.

Hello and welcome udunnnome Mate have you run any security scans yet? either with your main AV or others if not these are well worth a try for starters

http://www.malwarebytes.org/products/malwarebytes_free/

http://www.superantispyware.com/

Another test you can run is a RAM test with Memtest86+ - Advanced Memory Diagnostic Tool

you will need to make a bootable disk and set the BIOS to boot from the optical drive but try the scans first as this one takes a while to do.

oh and some system specs mate is always helpful - mobo HDD RAM etc etc

Hi everyone,

My computer freezes after playing, tipically Fallout4, with a glitchy sound continuous (buzzing) and requires hard reset.
Before starting to blame various components I installed months ago other 8 gb of RAM, different brand, so I did memtest for roughly 8 hour and no problem, also fumark 1080p test no problem, prime blend test no problem.
So I read that the graphics drivers might be problem, so I unistall them and install them again and I was able to play for 2 hours with no problems than it happened again and ,after 10 minutes of gaming, again.
Happened also, just once, with GTA5 and COD that's why I thought it could be a systematic problematic.

I also have general problems with my SO (windows 8.1) automatic restart almost never works (freezing while restarting logo rolls in the blu screen), opening browsers may cause random freezing (possibly flash player?), this things happened also before, while the gaming part is new.

So my idea now is to unistall Fallout 4 and reinstall, maybe it corrupted some files, install windows 10 since they told me you have to install new drivers again, and check if it happens again.
Just wanna ask if this are the signs of a possible dying component of my rig, GC is 4 month old, the rest roughly 1 year.

Enable Driver Verifier. Enabling this should hopefully crash your system and then point to the faulty driver that is causing problems. However before you do, it is advised that you create a system restore point and backup first.

You have McAfee installed, is that correct? At least to test, uninstall it and install MSE (Microsoft Security Essentials) instead.

These drivers can be found by searching them in Google and then finding the associated software or driver. Finally, find the latest version of this driver or software and download and install it. Some of the drivers may also be found here (if the driver says 'Windows Update' simply make sure all Windows Updates are installed).

You should also update any other drivers you can think of including graphics, audio, chipset etc.

Hi there,

I have tried to fix this problem myself. Problem started several days ago and I cannot remember installing any new programs that would have caused this (possibly an automatic windows update?).

I've tried scanning the disk for errors, cleaning registry, virus/spyware scanning and updating a few major drivers with no luck.

I've used blue screen view and the driver wdf01000.sys keeps on popping up but after a bit of reading I don't think that is the root of the problem.

I have a sneaking suspision that it may be a security program called Folder Lock, however I have had this program installed for several months with out problems.

I have attached the .dmp file from my last crash (they all seem fairly similar). Any help would be much appreciated.

Cheers
Josh

So far the programs that have crashed are:

iTunes
WinRAR
IE9
uxtheme service

They happen at random points in time, and apparently with all programs. Why does this happen?

This sounds like it could be an overheating problem. Are your fans all working?

Could try a chkdsk. Or a system restore to before problems started.

After install of Vista Ultimate 64x I have been getting random program crashes and BSOD's with no explanation. I browsed Asus' website and saw that sometimes memory voltage can be the cause of system instability. I went into my bios and set the dram voltage to 2.1V, the required voltage by my OCZ Gold DDR2 1066 4G kit (OCZ2G10664GK). Doing this changed nothing so I figured my memory was incompatible with my mobo because it wasn't listed as compatible in the mobo's QVL. I downloaded memtest86 and tested my memory receiving errors when I manually set the voltage but none when the voltage was set to auto. I figured I would go out and buy memory on the compatability list just to confirm and tested receiving the same results in memtest86. I left the voltage on auto and ran my system with the new memory but to no avail. I am completely stumped as to what the problem could be so any help is appreciated.

A few weeks ago, I installed a USB media card reader in my system, soon thereafter, I began experiencing some problems with programs acting strangely and crashing, etc. I unplugged the card reader since I rarely use it anyway. The problems seemed to stop for about a week or so. Then the computer would just randomly restart in the middle of a game or when left running idle for a long time, such as overnight or while I'm at work. I thought that maybe my 420w psu was reaching its limits with 3 HDDs and 2 optical drives plugged in. I unplugged a single HDD and now the crashes happen less often, but still happen. The crashes are more likely to happen when playing a game, but the programs include the game itself, or winamp, trillian, skype, firefox, or "truevector service". Those are usually about the only programs I have running at all. Twice so far I have encountered the blue screen of death, which I hadn't seen I think since SP1 was released...

I have a suspicion that it might be my memory, but I have not yet run memtest86, because I have not gotten around to buying a new spindle of CDs. Hi everyone,

Since I've had my recent reformat and installed my newest hardware upgrade, I've experienced some random Windows crashes.

Here's my hardware configuration :

Asus P5KC Motherboard
Intel Core 2 Duo E6750 @ 2666 MHz
Crucial Ballistix DDR2-1033 2x1gb
eVGA 8800 GTS Superclocked 320mb DDR3 (60 degrees)
A few S-ATA HDs
Audigy 2
OCZ GameXstream 600w

So, I'm getting random and strange crashes while I'm playing games (HL2, WoW), and also BSOD's.
All drivers are up to date.

Oh, in addition, I've launched CPU-Z to check my setup and it was said that my ram was running at 6400 instead of 8500, why is that? CPU-Z detects that it can be runned at 1033, so the ram is fine, but when I try to change it in the bios, my CPU boots and it says "Overclocking Failed".

Thanks in advance.

I have taken it to a computer shops, and they informed it was in working order and after starting up. yah you guessed it.

I installed a fresh legit windows 7 32-bit now. still bsod's

I'm attaching all my dump files if someone would look at it.

Thanks in advance

heres the dump files.

ok so i ran memtest for 9 cycles with no errors, ran driver verifier with no blue screens.(checked everything except microsoft programs)

If this is pointing to the cpu or motherboard as the culprit please let me know as i can probably get it replaced for free.

the culprit of the bsod's is mostly ntoskrnl.exe and ntkrnlmp.exe after alot of windows updates. although the bluescreens started after a fresh installation

i can upload new dumps if anyone is interested in this problem.

also my cpu temp is around 50 dont know if thats normal?

im pretty much baffled

G'day guys...

I recently (almost two months ago) purchased a new laptop on feebay (if you're going to post anti purchasing off ebay replies...don't....i already know). It's a LG e500 SAP20A

Specs:
vista home premium 32bit.
Intel Core 2 Duo 2.2ghz T7500
two DDR2 667mhz 2gb RAM Sodimm pc5300 RAM modules (obviously being only 32bit, only 3gb is recognized)
NVIDIA geforce 8400M 128Mb

The extra RAM didn't come standard on it, it was added by the store i purchased it from. It's brand new and still covered by manufacteror warranty.

Now the problem; random blue screens during normal running of the PC. It worked fine for the first few weeks, no problems what so ever. how ever about three weeks ago i got a blue screen of death whilst running word (from office 2003). i restarted the computer and it was fine for another week or so. then i got another, and then another and another. Now it will only sometimes run fine in normal mode (i'm currently in safe mode which has had no blue screens to date). the BSOD's don't come at any particular time, or during any particular program.

apart from the BSOD's i get a lot of program crashes. mainly firefox (which i uninstalled) as well as windows explorer, superfetch (what ever that is) and a list of other programs.

The error messages i've been getting are as follows:
PAGE FAULT IN NONPAGED AREA 0x00000050
MEMORY MANAGEMENT 0x0000001A

My computer has been experiencing random crashes usually while I use Avira or after being on for a little while when running some programs. I have just done a fresh install but I am still running into problems
Im sorry if I'm not supposed to post the following information in the first post but i saw alot of the time it was needed so I'll post it here. If it is helpful i can try to move it to a separate post though also i have the BSOD dump logs if those would help as well.

Edit:
I have also noticed that as time goes on while the computer is on that if i have a program playing such as vlc which uses sound that it will decrease in volume as time randomly goes on but that all of the sound options will say it has not changed.

I have also recently found that one way to get the computer to blue screen faster is by using the magnifying glass. With it my computer goes from having maybe an hour or two between crashes to only having 20 minutes between them. Also programs seem to have trouble installing especially steam.

edit: Also I have noticed that my video card seems to be constantly over 70 degrees Celsius and often gets to over 80 when the computer is about to crash. Sometimes it will stay at 80 for a long time without crashing though so I am unsure if this is related.

I'm hvaing two very random problems with my windows XP pro SP1 on an AMD processor with a gig of RAM.

first problem: random explorer crashes. I don't mean windows exploere as in the file browser, but rather the explorer.exe process, the shell. On my account, the taskbar occasionally dissappears but programs keep running, I can press ctrl-alt-del, start new task, type "explorer" and everyhting continues as normal. This happen maybe once a week. One other account is hexed by teh computer simply going to a black screen and being totally unresponsive after cliking "log off". I assume this is an explorer crash too. Three other accoutns are fine.

problem number two: When closing some programs (photoshop, 3dsmax, iTunes), I get an error somehting like the following:

first I get a box titled "Photoshop.exe - Application Error" which says "The exception unknown software exception (0x0eedfade) occured in hte application at location 0x77e73887"

immediately following I get a window titled "Error" which states "Runtime error 217 at 13D5F452"

The locations in the messages change fomr instance to instance.

I've found o soltions yet. Googling prompted me to investigate the windows event viewer, but i found its information a little cryptic. By searching these forums I discoverd some stuff about a program called look2me-destroyer. Does anyone know if using this diagnostic would be helpful? Also I can run hijacthis... Read more

Got a new MSI GT780DXR laptop around a month ago, intel i7 CPU, NVIDIA GTX570M VGA/1.5 GB GDDR5, 8GB of RAM, Windows 7 x64

It worked fine for 2-3 weeks and then suddenly developed problems. It always starts by crashing Skype, if I reopen it crashes again after a few minutes normally. Once or twice Skype has instantly crashed on startup.

It then crashes a programme called Holdem Manager 2 (data gathering program for online poker sites that outputs to an on-screen HUD) and again if I try to restart it quickly crashes.

This is normally followed by a BSOD, I have had several different error messages with the BSOD.

If I leave the laptop running without opening skype or holdem manager on startup, I still eventually get the BSOD. Sometimes after a BSOD Skype crashes instantly upon restart as well as some other random things (THX audio etc).

If I run a quick scan with Malware Bytes Anti Malware it comes back fine, same for quick scan with Microsoft Security Essentials however if I do a full scan with either program the laptop BSODs everytime. I can however do a full scan with both programs in safe mode and it doesnt return any problems.

I have also run Intel processor diagnostic scanner and it reported no errors (and didnt induce a BSOD in normal startup mode).

I looked up most of the BSOD error numbers on faultwire and they all mentioned potential Graphic... Read more

Hi
Let start with testing the hardware
Since we don't know the cause of it and events you have posted don't tell much

1) Run memtest on your machine download it from the link in my signature
burn it on CD and boot your machine with it
Make sure to only have one stick of RAM in your system when you are running then test and run it for 8-11 passes
Then turn off the PC and replace that RAM stick which was just tested with the other one run the same process again

Download HWmonitor and post the temps under full load and idle

Also I personally do not like Driver updating software from 3rd parties
so If i were you to download the drivers from Asrock's website for your motherboard model as well as for your video card from Nvidia's website
Use Driver sweeper to uninstall the current drivers
Reboot
install the just downloaded drivers

Also do as this thread says and post the files

I started having issues about 5 days ago, I had a couple of games crash but it was hours/days apart. On Sunday watching Netflix, Firefox crashed repeatedly. Over the course of two hours I had about 4 or 5, and a bluescreen.
Then games started crashing more regularly and firefox kept up its crashes. It also had regular page crashes. VLC/WMP also crashed on opening video files. Switching output, to OpenGL from Auto fixed this.

I made sure GPU drivers were up to date, even wiped them and clean installed. I did a memtest, no issues. I tried using Chrome and it has the same problems.

I just formatted and reinstalled and am having the same issues again, but they seem reduced.
Any ideas on what could be causing it how to fix it?

It started about 2-3 weeks ago and is getting worse. I can no longer leave my pc on overnight or it freezes. If I run more than 2-3 programs it freezes. I was watching a video once with headphones on and heard a loud noise then freeze. I at first thought it was just one of my hard drives dying because I had similar symptoms before I removed it. Is there a way to specify certain windows not to occupy a certain area of the screen? For example, when you maximize a window, the bottom edge does not exceed the taskbar at the bottom. Also I have a program at work that does the same thing so I guess its built into some programs. However, I recently got an app called RocketDock (its amazing). Its basically a better taskbar and you can set it for always on top but you cant stop full screen windows from going behind it. Are there apps out there that restrict a space certain program windows can take up and allow the space for others? I searched Google but a program like that is not easy to find. Thanks for your help!

Also I have attached a screen shot the Rocketdock app (looks really cool) and I maximized Wordpad and as you can see, it hides behind Rocketdock. I have two monitors so you can see what it looks like on both.

1) Windows Installation : Various files cannot be copied and/or not copied correctly. Giving blue screen of [enter] retry, [esc] skip or F3 to abort installation. Files constantly failing to copy : cyycoins or something, lots of .chm files, too many to mention. Curious thing is, same problems for both optical drives and both HDDs, varying both for many installations.

Eventually I held down [enter] and the files went in, well some didn't but Windows booted fine.

2) Warhammer Dawn of War : Winter Assault. wh40k.cab is corrupt. Changed optical drives during installtion, installed fine. Could be hardware issue with my cdrom?

3) Same game, when playing will crash to desktop. No error message sometimes, no indication of crash (no freezing or warning sounds or stuttering, just flat out BOOM, .exe gone. Sometimes error message appears to send error report, sometimes doesn't. Occurs while under load (heavy gameplay) and while idle (like leaving it in menu for ages. Hi folks,

Thought I may need to start a new thread, I noticed other threads have similar issues to what I'm seeing and didn't want to confuse by re-posting in the same thread.

I have Windows 7 Enterprise and just started having many random windows blue screens. I think it started as soon as I tried to run a trainer for a game Company of Heroes, since McAfee said it was a trojan and I tried to restore it after seeing online by other folks that the file was legit.

Anyway, since then I think, i started to see many BSoDs, not always the same BSoD message and they would occur during normal windows usage, a few times in Safe mode with networking. But most of the time, usually within 5 to 30min of running normally.

Anyways, I ran the McAfee virusscan and it found a few viruses, also ran spybot and malware bytes, and Stinger. I ran them from safe mode and was able to clean out the affected files.

I still see fewer BSoDs, but mainly now my google chrome browser won't work. I've tried uninstall/reinstall and every time I load it, it never works. sometimes freezes and I have to do a hard power off/on on my laptop. I have a lenovo w510.

Other problems is that my windows randomly freezes. Also, so far I can use Internet Explorer and Firefox, not able to install Opera. But when using Firefox or IE, i sometimes get random redirects.

I have ran hijackthis and can provide the log file. I can also provide the windows minidump files.

Please help! I greatly appreciate... Read more

Hello all,

recently my windows xp(sp2) has just encountered a massive set of problems that all started appearing all at around the same time.
1. I cannot install/uninstall any programs, ANY programs, be it warcraft 3, firefox, or word processing applications or anything. What happens is the installer starts up, then when it starts to install or uninstall, it just hangs there completely.
2. Programs that are in use on the computer crash randomly. MSN messenger randomly crashes and just locks up itself and all conversation windows. IE sometimes hard locks itself without prior provocation. Firefox, ms word, windows media player... anything and everything hangs at random intervals.
3. Interestingly enough, when any program hangs, even taskmanager (ctrlaltdel) is unable to close the locked up program. It is stated there as not responding, but when i click end task either of two things happen: a) taskmgr ignores my request entirely b) taskmgr ITSELF hangs (the title says "windows task manager (not responding)"
4. Computer cannot shut down. Clicking the shut down icon on the windows menu lags the entire computer and the menu to restart shutdown or log off never appears. As a result i have taken to manually pulling the plug. Obviously this cannot continue.

I have avast4 which is updated and there doesn't seem to be any viruses or spyware. Also when a program hangs, it doesn't take up more cpu than normal; cpu usage always remains the same (around 0 to 10 for me)... Read more

On a new computer I installed windows XP pro onto a seagate 200gb sata hard drive. I have a 160 gb western digital IDE hard drive installed. I also installed all windows updates and installed basic software, such as Office XP, McAfee, Firefox, etc.

Whenever I open My Computer or windows explorer and browse through folders, after a little while explorer crashes and then restarts. This also sometimes happens when I open the start menu. Occasionally, Dr Watson postmortem debugger is triggered and the computer freezes until I end the process from the task manager.

Using a windows explorer substitute, ExplorerXP, has no problems when I browse the directories on my hard drives. Any ideas? Does explorer crash with large SATA hard drives?

Thanks

Hi there people,

I've got a strange problem: any setup window (no matter what installation it is) crashes when I try to select another folder than the default one to install the software in. I already scanned for virusses and spyware, but there were no results. The ironic thing is that just this morning I performed a clean windows-installation...
Ever since I installed nothing special on it but the very generic programs using the default installation directory (i.e. MS Office, Nero, Panda Antivirus, Hitman Pro, WinRAR, Java, Ghost, some drivers for specific hardware which worked fine on this PC before and some Windows-updates).
Does anyone have an idea what could have harmed my system? I appreciate any suggestions.

Thanks in advance

A:Setup crashes when browsing for a folder

Alrighty, I managed to fix the problem myself...
It was the notorious problem with the MS KB908531 patch which caused my setups to lock up when browsing for a different folder. Since Panda Antivirus hid the verclsid.exe from listing in my task manager for some kinda strange reason, I couldn't have noticed it and thus didn't see what was wrong.

Eventually I noticed the verclsid by accident when trying to install firefox (a setup in which the error occured) without Panda running to see whether it made any difference... when it crashed, I noticed all the verclsid's in my task manager and googled for it.

I uninstalled the patch and now I'm awaiting the patch for the patch (which is probably gonna be patched again due to another patch failure sooner or later), while setting up my dual boot with Linux

Hello, I'm hoping someone may be able to help me out. I carefully read the Preparation Guide and started the Cobian Backup; I was unable to download DDS due to compatibility mode (?)
I know very little about computers so I apologize in advance if I do not understand something or don't know what I'm doing here. I have not opened any folders, adjusted settings or deleted any files. I've only performed the two aforementioned tasks; DDS download unsuccessfully. I will wait until given instruction on how to proceed.

Brief description of issues- I notice in the Task Manager my computer will often be at 99% CPU due to Google Chrome. Also, while browsing websites sometimes I've clicked on something -not an ad but a legitimate button within the site- another browser tab opens up of some random online gaming ad. Most always I will be on a site and there's an extreme delay or stall, or it will completely freeze up, and nothing on the page will open or respond. Experiencing random crashes. I use Google Chrome and sites will not properly load, or many of the above mentioned issues are exacerbated when using different browsers (Internet Explorer. Firefox, Chrome).

Hi guys, I bought this laptop as per description, I bought it refurbished since I wanted a cheap and light laptop to carry around. The laptop worked flawlessly for 8-9 month then suddenly it started to have problems. At the beginning it started to freeze when using it (screen freezes and that's it), I had to power it off with the power button and then restart it.After 2-3 months of this it started to refuse booting, sometimes it boot, sometimes it doesn't; all the LED are on (power and HD) but the screen is off, it doesn't even show the BIOS screen. The laptop boot about 30% of the times I try to start it, the other 70% nothing but the LED as described above, sometimes it freezes during use but again all of this is completely random, I have no idea why it happens. What I know is this:- I'm pretty sure it's not the LCD panel, I tried to connect an external monitor but it's the same erratic behavior all over again- I'm pretty sure it's not the HD since I tried with a new one, same story...- According to he LENOVO user manual it can be one of these two things (in order of probability): 1 RAM Failure - 2 Motherboard failure. Well, I hope it's the RAM of course (because it's 30 Euros and easy to change), if it's the MB I can pretty much kiss it goodbye because it would be cheaper to buy an other one than buying the MB.Now it has been working for two hours running Memtest86+ to test the RAM, I'm already at the second pass but it detected no errors: "Pass com...
