Connection to 2.4GHz, but not 5 GHz, using dual-band gaming adapter for X360

Q: Connection to 2.4GHz, but not 5 GHz, using dual-band gaming adapter for X360

Hello everyone, I definitely need some help here.

I have been using my WGA600N Linksys Gaming Adapter to connect my Xbox 360 S to my wireless router two floors above for years now. The main reason I bought it was to give the 360 access to the 5 GHz frequency on my dual-band routers, which I have heard (and experienced) is better for wireless gaming than a 2.4 frequency.

However, after switching routers from the old Linksys E3000 to the new EA4500, I can no longer access the 5 GHz connection through this adapter, or on the Xbox at all it seems. I have tried nearly everything I can think of that worked in the past (which seems to be anything except the lousy setup CD), mainly connecting the WGA600n to my laptop with an ethernet and accessing its setup utility using a static IP address (I hope I said that correctly). For example:
setting the 5 and 2.4 Ghz frequencies to either the same or different SSIDs
setting the password to these frequencies to matching and non-matching passcodes
changing the visibility of the 5GHz network from non-broadcasting to a broadcasting signal
setting the adapter to search for 5GHz only, not mixed 2.4/5
Those are the most obvious that I can think of, but there are probably more in the hours I have wasted on this. The strange thing is...
the adapter can connect to the 2.4 frequency, not the 5.

How do I know this? When trying to connect to a 'mixed' signal, the adapter constantly searches for channels (as far as I can tell). When connecting to a 2.4 GHz channel (3, 6, etc.) the status of the device on the setup utility reads 'Associated with [SSID]'. Then, when the channel switches to a 5 GHz (40, 149, etc.) the status switches to 'Not associated with any AP'. The flashing lights are also indicative of this: when there are clear differences in the lights between 'associated' (connected) and 'not associated'.

I have also tried just connecting to the 2.4 frequency, but the connection is just awful (which I assume is the result of using many wireless devices from the loft to the basement). On a side note, when connected, the 360 typically recommends switching the NAT type from 'Moderate' to 'Open'. On the router setup, there is an option to enable or disable NAT, the latter of which causes the entire network to lose internet connectivity.

I am probably leaving out some other important detail, but that's quite a long read. Any thoughts on this??

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hi,

I have a N600 Wireless Dual Band Router model WNDR3400. My question(s) is that if I connect with a wired cable, will I be connected to the 5ghz and avoid interference with those on the 2.4ghz connection?

For example, I have a wired connection with my Playstation 3 but i believe the Playstation 3 incapable of detecting the 5ghz when I do a wireless scan. Does this mean when I connect with a wired cable with the ps3 I use the 2.4ghz connection with other users and getting interference if they're doing something like streaming?

And finally, if my Laptop is unable to detect the 5.ghz connection does that mean I need some sort of adapter? Or does it have to do something with the settings. Its enabled and is on the default channel.
[Sorry one more question, where do I go to see who is currently using the internet connection in the setup]

Hello, I bought a new Cisco Linksys E2500, Advanced Dual-Band N Router. I am going to convert from wired ports around the house to wireless. And received a new tablet and I must go wireless now. I have not set up the new tablet as yet. The new router has a 5Ghz band and 2.4 GHz band. I gave each band it's own user name and password. However, my wireless signal can only bring up the 2.4GHz. I called Linksys and they said the 5GHz was for heavy gaming and the 2.4 was for every day wireless use. I am not a gamer. Would there be a reason to keep this split type of gigahertz? I have tried to connect to the 5GHz band but it automatically defaults to the 2.4 band. Is the speed slower on the 2.4GHz band? Thank you!

A:Cisco Linksys E2500, Advanced Dual-Band N Router (2.4GHz only works)

Hi Aurora,

It all depends on the receiver each device has. Some devices have 2.4GHz and some have 5GHz.

For example, my phone can pick up 5GHz, whilst my PC can only pick up 2.4GHz.

Just want to add to the compatability discussion....... I just successfully replaced stock  RTL3290 adapter in my HP Pavilion n-010dx X360 Win10 64-bit (ver.1607) with an Intel AC-7260.  I added a second antenna to inside of the laptop display chassis and the card connected to  my SonicWall TZ-217 Wireless N NSA at 300mbps without any fuss. Bluetooth 4.0 works flawlessly with my Jabra STEALTH (v.1.25.0.1) headset (headphone and microphone).  Using the stock HP BIOS (updated) and Intel drivers BT_19.10.1635_64_Win10 (64 bit) & Wireless_19.10.0_PROSet64_Win10.  Speedtest.net pulls 51.51/5.42 on my 50/5 connection. Totally screams. Have fun!

I would appreciate some help deciding on the best purchase of a USB wireless adapter for my Windows 8 computer.

I use a Netgear WNDR3700v4 dual band Router, but sadly have discovered that my Windows 8 computer's network adapter only receives 2.4Ghz. Thanks to our cordless phones - I lose the internet every time the phone is used (only on the Windows 8 computer - 7 hums along just fine).

So - I guess I shell out some more money for a USB wireless adapter with 5Ghz capability. I would prefer a mini dongle, but if that's not a good choice I'll live with the stick poking out.

Anyone care to suggest a brand of USB adapter with 5G that plays well with Windows 8? Does it matter if it's USB 2.0 or 3.0?

Cases that my network adapter connects to my computer:
1.) After restart
2.) When the network adapter successfully starts and then shut the computer down then start it again

Cases that my network adapter does not connect to my computer:
1.) Turning the computer on after a few hours from the last shutdown

I have done the following things:
1.) Update the driver
2.) Not allowing the computer to turn off the network adapter
3.) Uninstall and reinstall network adapter
4.) Release and renew IPv4 address
5.) Disable Proset services
6.) Disable Bluetooth driver and services
7.) Set WLAN AutoConfig to automatically start

Is this a hardware related problem or a driver problem? Do you know how to fix this?

Thanks!

Unfortunately, at my school you need a dual band wireless adapter in order to connect to the internet. With my current laptop, there are certain requirements it must meet in order for it to work.
it must be a full height card. An adapter will not work as the antenna wires won't go that far.
It needs to have 2 antenna ports. I have found a few ones which fit all the other specifications, but they appear to have 3 ports.
Obviously it must be PCIe-mini and dual band, as stated in the title
Does anyone know what one to get, or even if there is one that meets those specifications?

A:buying laptop PCIe mini dual band adapter

Your post is confusing for a few reasons:
Laptops do not have expansion slots, PCIe or otherwise. Everything is expanded through the external ports.
Very few laptops are made with dual band adapters right now. It is curious that a school would require something that is only available on top end laptops.
Wires? Network connectivity is done through CAT5 or 6 Ethernet wiring or wirelessly.
Dual band refers to the frequency of the wireless signal: 2.4GHz or 5GHz.
The antennas on a wireless device correspond to the channels that the wireless signal is sent out on. 2 antennae do not equal dual band.
Full height or half height cards are only configurations. The configuration of a card has nothing to do with performance. Where are you going to put a full height card for desktop PC in a laptop?
PCIe-mini makes a little more sense, but contradicts the earlier need for a full height card. These are opposites.
Perhaps it would be better to explain what you are trying to do.

I have the same problem. I have an HP Pavilion 17Z-g000 CTO Touch running Windows 10 Pro with Intel dual-band wireless AC 3165.  The wireless connection continues to randomly drop internet connection.
When I first bought the computer it would crash Win 10 with a blue screen.  After several driver updates, it now just loses connection to the internet.  Clicking on the wireless icon, the network shows it as connected to my wireless router, but with no internet access.  After a while, wi-fi shows as being off, and can't be turned back on, and finally, wi-fi shows as disconnected with no available connections.  If I try to reboot, or shut down, the computer will hang indefinitely until I manually shut down by holding in the power key.
When I turn the computer back on, the wi-fi will show as not connected and will not show any available networks.  To restore the network connection, I have to diable the network controller in device manager, restart the computer, and re-enable the network controller.  This problem occurs both after waking from sleep and after a powerup.  The time it takes for the problem to arise can vary from a  few minutes, to a few hours after logging in.
I have tried the latest drvier from HP, 18.30.0.9, and also the latest from Intel 18.40.0.9, but the problem still persists.  HP support says this is a software problem, and since my computer is more than 90 days old, I will have to pay for support.  I told ... Read more

Yo! As the title says I have in my possession an Asus RT-N56U Dual Band Wireless Router. A friend gave it to me, since the 2.4 GHz Band stopped working. He says that the Antenna could have melted because he tried resetting the device, upgrading its firmware, and verifying that the Router's page had the spectrum enabled.

I also tried those steps to verify it to no avail.

Any suggestions?

Thanks!

A:Asus RT-N56U (Wireless Router) isn't broadcasting 2.4GHz Band

1st, check that the 2.4 antennae is on and that the 2.4 SSID is broadcast in the wireless setup page of the router.

If that all good, you could try to update the firmware

Networking - RT-N56U
Manuals are under Manuals & Document
Firmware is under Drivers and Tools (skip the beta version and grab the nexy one - Version 3.0.0.4.374.979

Hi there!

So about 2 months ago, I purchased the AC53 when I moved in to a house share.
We have Virgin Media SuperHub that does both 2.4ghz and 5ghz.
When I installed it, it worked fine and connected excellently to the 5G band, a few days ago however the 5G connection disappeared off my list and now it always connects me to the 2.4ghz band.

Tried resetting my SuperHub and re-installing the drivers and software utility for the AC53 but alas it doesn't show. My phone however can find and connect to the 5G band.

I'm a bit confused as where to go from here!

Any help would be much appreciated!

In the command prompt window type ipconfig /all and press enter.
Next right click within the command prompt and select "Select All" press enter.

OK, this is my first time being a part of or using a tech related forum so here it goes:

I'm trying to help save a neighbor some money by fixing their wireless network.

WNDR3700 Dual band Netgear router.

2.4ghz wireless b/g/n with enabled SSID broadcast, channel=auto, mode set to 130Mbps
WPA-TKIP + WPA2-AES. wireless isolation is not enabled.

5Ghz wireless a/n enabled SSID broadcast, channel = 44, Mode is up to 300Mbps
No security encription. (i know...bad, but the lady has lots of kids and family members coming
and going from the house so she doesn't want one encripted). Video network enabled

Both Radio frequencies are enabled, fragment and CTS/RTS set to max

WPS settings = keep existing.

IPv6 not enabled, No repeating is enabled, No guest networks are enabled(however ssid broadcast is enabled for guest profile 1)
The problem, and reason for fixing the problem is that the 2.4 Ghz band light on the router is ON however the SSID is not being seen by any client in the house. the netgear interface says it is on and working. the neighbor needs the 2.4ghz band to work because the printer is wireless and will only recognize 2.4Ghz SSIDs. Also they have older nintendo DS clients they would like to use on the network.

During the day the 5 Ghz band works with very seldom (1-2) disconnects while the 2.4 Ghz band wont be visible to any device. in the evening both bands will come online, and very often will every computer get disconnected from either, the 5Ghz band wi... Read more

At times, when I click to open the list of available networks, 2.4GHz may appear momentarily only and then disappears; thus I can not choose it for connection. I would appreciate any help to resolve this issue so that my OMEN laptop shows both the bands in the list of available networks so as to choose either one for connection.

N600 Wireless Dual Band Router WNDR3400.

I am trying to get a signal out in my garage at the opposite end of my router location. I am getting 1 bar and "poor" signal. I downloaded inSSIDer to analyse my signal and I notice that my "Wireless Network (5GHz a/n)" is not broadcasting anything. The checkbox for "Enable SSID Broadcast" is checked.

I have very limited knowledge of this stuff but it seems to me that if it is a dual band that I should be seeing 2 different signals, right?

All I see is this: Wireless Network (2.4GHz b/g/n)

I have attached screenshot of my settings

Can someone help me out with this? Thanks, Joe

When my Carbon 5th is connected to 5 GHz Wifi it randomly resets (drops) after several hours (connection is being lost, Windows reports "Cannot connect to the network"). Sometimes it is possible to connect again manually, sometimes only reboot makes it work again. Connection to 2.4 GHz Wifi always works totally fine. I've seen several similar topics on Intel forums with the same issue, looks like it touches several Intel WiFi adapters. No solution have been found except using only old 2.4 GHz protocols or external WiFi adaptors. I tried different drivers and many parameter sets on my router - nothing solves this issue. It is very sad to have only 20mbps with 2.4 GHz while new standards offer more than 100mbps. Did you face this issue? Any ideas to solve it out?

Hello, I just got my E560 on 9/27/16. It has windows 7, 64 pro installed. I plugged in the battery and waited an hour or so before turning the system on. Everything booted ok and I entered my hidden router for my wifi. Unfortuanly, it would not connect. I finally dug out an old ethernet cable to hook up and test the system and download some software. I then unhid my router and still was not able to find it. Everyones router in the neigborhood showed up but mine. I call tech support but they claimed that it was my routers software. I have 4 other devices working just fine on the wifi and I even set my printer up for wifi while the router was hidden with no problem. I checked the Lenovo site for updates but the system said everything was up to date. I went to the Intel site and downloaded their current driver for this card. The laptop finally noticed the router while it was unhidden and I again hid the router and rebooted my Laptop. This cured the problem. However, I was displeased with Customer service they tried to tell me it was a problem with my router and not the system and all my drivers shipped from the factory were up to date. I hope this will help anyone who has a similar problem.

Try searching for the Ralink RT61 (RT256x/RT266x) driver on Windows 8.1. That has worked for some people. That unit was EOL (End of Life), as of around 2011.

I have an HP Spectre X360.  It has power adapter, with a right angle end (blue tip) that plugs into computer.I HATE THE RIGHT ANGLE !!!  if I'm on the couch, it points down, gets extra pressure on it.if I'm on a table, it points front or back, and puts pressure because the cord wants to go to the side of the computer does anyone know of a patch cord, that would allow that adapter end to plug into, and then have a STRAIGHT blue-tip adapter end on it, so that I can relieve the pressure on this cord wire when I use it? any assistance appreciated

My internet connection has been very iffy in the last year or so. There's another connection from across the street I can access but it's also not a good connection. (I live on a school campus with wireless campus set up).

IT guy said I should be sure I am connecting with Wireless N - not a/b/g.

How can I tell? I can't remember.

I have a dell laptop and it's not that old. It says in the hardware manager that it is capable of N. How do I check how it's connecting?

I have broadband internet with a router that has wireless built in. I connect wirelessly.

Thanks

Carla

Hi all, this is my first post so I really appreciate all of the help and I can't tell you how much I've benefitted from the things I've read while lurking here over the last few days. Now, on to the show...

I have an HP workstation with a Q35 based mother board that had a 2.4GHz Core 2 Duo in it (E6550), and I wanted to put the processor into my new rig, but still want to use the old comp. I have a Cedar Mill core Pentium 4 3.4GHz HT that's also socket 775 and I thought I'd just stick that in the HP since it doesn't need the better processor. Now, when I try to boot the HP, I get a couple of beeps and the fan just goes on overdrive and stays that way until I shut the thing off, but it never boots.

What's weird is that I can stick the Core 2 Duo back in and everything boots up just fine, but the thing just hates on that P4 like no tomorrow. Now I've used the P4 in my new rig just to make sure it wasn't shot, and it works like a charm. It's just in that workstation with the Q35 mother board that I'm getting nowhere. Any thoughts?

A:Cedar Mill P4 3.4Ghz in Q35 mobo won't boot. Swapped in for C2D E6650 2.4Ghz

Your workstation motherboard probably does not support that P4 processor. Just because it is socket 775 doesn't mean it is compatible.

I thought I had a double NAT problem, online somewhere it said go into Bridge Mode, CSR said the ISP router is already in that mode.

I have a cable router as my ISP, hooked up to a ASUS router (2.4GHz and 5GHz) for the house. Have 10 devices on the ASUS. On the Cisco ISP router, I got my Desktop computer in port 2 running to my Ethernet port on the back of my computer, and ASUS in port 1 which goes to the blue input port on the ASUS. I turned off the WiFi on the Cisco router.

The question I have is how can I log into my ASUS router when hard-wired into port 2 on the CISCO router.
CISCO is 192.168.0.1 - ASUS is using port one 192.168.0.10, Computer is using port two 192.168.1.194
ASUS is 192.168.1.1 - Can only access this router when connected to it via WiFi.

Well I am connected to both now - the WiFi on the ASUS and hardwired to the CISCO.
I have both routers open. ASUS 192.168.1.1 and Cisco 192.168.0.1
This problem seems to be artificially solved.
