Flickering Taskbar IBM T400 Thinkpad Win 7 32bit pro

Q: Flickering Taskbar IBM T400 Thinkpad Win 7 32bit pro

I have a IBM T400 Thinkpad win 7 32 bit pro OS and the taskbar just recently started flickering in "heartbeat" type of rhythm. I have updated the display drivers as the only solution I have been able to glean from this forum and the internet. The driver update has not worked to date.

I would appreciate any other suggestions to fix this issue

TIA

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

Is anything else flickering besides the taskbar?i also have a t400 but mine is running windows xp pro with no problems. it might be that the graphics or video cards have a problem or the laptop screen itself might be the culprit.you might want to have it checked out to see what the actual problem is and then go from there.

A:thinkpad T400 Ram Upgrade

RAM: You need a minimum of PC3-8500 1066MHz DDR3. However faster chips like PC3-10600 1333MHz DDR3 or PC3-12800 1600MHz DDR3 will work fine as well.

If there's little or no difference in price I'd buy the faster memory. The reason is that if I upgrade to a new(er) notebook it's more likely the RAM will work at full speed on that system.

Note also that while you can upgrade to a maximum of 8GB (2x 4GB) with a 32-bit OS like WinXP-32 you won't be able to utilize more than 3GB.

SSD: Any of the drives you've listed will work well.

Hi Punittiwari3353,

Welcome to Lenovo Community!

Have you checked it individually with battery and without battery?
Did you check with different power adapter or with different power socket?
Is the CPU fan running with regular speed?
Boot the system into ?Safe mode? and check if the issue persists there also?

Hope this helps. Do post back if the issue persists!

Best regards,

Hi, I've searched the forums and elsewhere online, and I can't find any real help for this issue. I'm running Win 7, and I have the most up-to-date drivers from the Lenovo site. I have turned on loudness equalization, but it has not helped the problem. This is an across-the-board problem. What I mean by that is, this problem persists regardless of the application, which I happen to be using. For instance, I use Media Player Classic: Home Cinema to watch movies. If the volume is at 0%, as I begin adjusting it upward, the volume level rises. However, as I reach about 70%, the volume stops increasing. There are audio adjustments w/in the application to boost the volume, but they serve to provide minimal effects. Overall, the volume is incredibly low. If you're sitting more than a few feet away from the laptop, it is inaudible. I don't know what else to do, and I was hoping that someone might offer some assistance. Thank you.  Jeff

I honestly have no clue what could have caused this!  I turned it on this morning & it was stuck on the booting screen. It read "ThinkPad" in large letters followed by "To interrupt normal start up, press the blue ThinkVantage button." I waited for about a half hour for it to boot & it never did. I of course pressed the ThinkVantage button & to my dismay...nothing happened. Afterwards, I unplugged it & removed the battery pack. I then plugged it back in & attempted to start it up again. Once again, nothing. I unplugged it again & attached the battery pack. At that point I tried starting it up again and N O T H I N G!  What do I do?!

Now, I suspect that the inverters are fine and I'm wondering about the LCD switch or LCD cable. I suppose I could just buy a cable, but before that, I wanted to take a step back and try to figure out if I'm overlooking anything. I've not been able to find a picture or location of the t400 lcd switch in either the lenovo hardware manual for the t400 or elsewhere online.Hi,I've got a thinkpad t400 with CCFL backlight. I recently replaced a bad LCD (the backlight was working at the time) with a new one. However, while the new screen works, it's backlight did not. I ordered a new inverter and plugged that in - still didn't work. I grabbed the old screen's backlight and tried it with both inverters - did not come on. I then grabbed another laptop I have and plugged in the old screen's backlight - it came on. Plugged in the new screen's backlight (while lcd was still plugged into the thinkpad), it's backlight came on.So, I know both backlights are fine, and suspected I just had a crappy inverter. I got a replacement new inverter and it still doesn't work. Tried new lcd and old backlight with all three again, no dice. Backlights still turn on when connected to spare laptop. So I now suspect the inverters are fine. I noticed that the laptop no longer goes to sleep or hibernation when the lid is closed. I changed the power settings so that it should sleep or hibernate, tried each power mode and it still refuses to do so. So I think the issue is with the switch that detects when t... Read more

I have a thinkpad T400. Couple of months ago the problem started. I could not shut it down it just keep re-booting. I had to press and hold the start button to shut it. Now it won't boot at all. It beeps 1-3-3-1 and just sits there. When I press start button all lights come ON for a while and after only battery , AC and Ready lights stay ON. Here are few things I did so far without any luck: 1. Removed battery and AC adaptor waited few minutes put it back - same problem2. Removed CMOS battery. DIMM cards waited for ten minutes replaced - same problem tried with swapping  DIMM cards - when I put only one card on top slot it says put the card on zero "bottom" position. After placing the Mem card on the bottom slot no thing happens. It beeps again and sit. When I checked in the manual it says either DIMM or System board. I do not know which one is giving me the problem. I just do not want to replace all parts without knowing. Can any body help please or had similar issue and solutions if you managed to solve it. Thank you. Roshni

It all started when I installed Win 7 after a Linux usage for a couple of months. First I thought it was uTorrent that screwed it up so I removed it but it still gave BSODs at least once a day. Haven't had the energy to do anything about it until now so now I'm asking you guys for advice how to get rid of it.
I have activated minidump in Control Panel > System > Advanced System Settings > Setting in Startup and Recovery > Small memory dump (256KB) under System failure.
Got a BSOD a couple of minutes ago but I didn't get a minidump output from it.

Attached the four debug reports I got from SF Diagnostic Tool.

Hi all -I know I am talking about a very old machine but I am hoping there is someone out there that would be willing and able to provide helpful  advice - some background -  in my dire need I purchased a 'refurb' Lenovo Thinkpad T400 from who now turns out to be an unreputable seller - I was silly enough not to worry about recovery disks or even a 30 day warranty - now I am paying dearly for my negligence.  This machine has had issues from day one that I thought I could work my way thru reading forums, Lenovo site etc. but nothing has worked.  My first challenge was trying to just get the right-click on touchpad to produce context menu - I searched and searched and reluctantly loaded 3rd party softwares to no avail.  I gave up on that only to discovered that when I loaded any antimalware program my cursor would not open that program nor would it open any other program on the machine. So I uninstalled the antimalware. So I can't really run to see if I have a virus.  To make a long story short right now NONE of the function keys work nor the THINKVANTAGE.  When I reboot and attempt to go to safe mode, bios utility I get nothing except opening up windows where sometimes the cursor will open a program or not and the trying to open programs from the start menu or the task bar is hit or miss same happens in the start menu and trying to open a browser.  I am running on Windows 7 Pro 64-bit and would like to go back to factory settings, but ag... Hi,

I have a T400 which has the following two display adapters:

ATI Mobility Radeon HD 3400 Series
Mobile Intel(R) 45 Express Chipset Family

After installing Windows 7 and checking device manager, the ATI adapter does show up under the "Display adapters' section, but it has a ! sign on it, and if I click for details, it says:

This device cannot start. (Code 10)

I tried downoading and installing this:

Lenovo Support & downloads - ThinkPad Switchable Graphics Driver for Windows Vista 32bit and 64bit - ThinkPad T400, R400, T500, W500

and when I rebooted, it went through some diagnostic tests in a cmd window to finish installation. But when I checked the device manager again, the ATI adapter still says it cannot start.

I also tried this:

ATI Catalyst? Mobility Display Driver

which I got to by selecting W7 32-bit > Mobility Radeon > Mobility Radeon HD 3000 series.

It seemed to install OK, but I got a message which I've gotten with previous attempts, which says:

"The Catalyst Control Center is not supported by the driver version of your enambled graphics adapter. Please update your ATI graphics driver, or enable your ATI adapter using the Displays manager."

I went to the device manager, right-clicked on the ATI adapter and did Update Driver, and it did at first find a better match but said it couldn't be installed with the same error message from above (Code 10). Now, when I try to update the driver again, it says... Read more

First, my t400 would only boot with power cord unplugged. Then it stopped booting altogether. I read to press the power button 10 times and hold it on the tenth time and to unscrew the palm rest to unplug the little battery for 30 seconds. That is the only way I can get it to boot now. I picked up a new regular battery today thinking it might be related but that hasn't solved it. Any ideas?

A:thinkpad t400 wont boot w/o reseting little battery behind palm rest

I looked at it closer and to get it to start i don't press the power button at all. I unplug the power cord and after unplugging the CMOS battery for awhile i just plug the power cord back in and it starts up. The first thing i see as it starts up is an error message about a bad CMOS checksum and then i have to change the date/time in the BIOS or it yells at me to do it. After all that it boots into windows 7. Once it is in windows no matter what i do to change the settings of what the power button does it still doesn't do anything. I can restart it fine but once i shut it down it the CMOS battery needs to be reset to get it going again.

Hello, for the past 2.5 years I've been in IT at a company that uses about 250 Lenovo Thinkpad Laptops (T440-T460) along with Thinkpad Pro docking stations. Since I've been here we've had issues with these docking stations just losing signal while the employee is working and their screen goes black multiple times a day. I've since been promoted to Desktop Engineer and put in charge of the fleet of laptops and equipment. We've tried swapping cables, laptops, etc. We finally narrowed it down the these docks. We're still getting BRAND NEW Lenovo docks that we've been purchasing out of the box that do this and the only thing that we've been able to do is warranty them and hope we don't get additional bad ones. We have to replace atleast one of these docks a week. Also trying the firmware update that Lenovo has provided for the docking stations has never worked for us.

Alright so.. I have no idea what I did or do to fix this annoying problem, I'm having, but my taskbar especially near the start button is glitching.. Not constantly but sometime's I notice when I go to click a tab down low or click something along the taskbar it get's glitchy for like a second.

Now this is weird.. I tried recording it and taking a screenshot of it, but even if it was happening the video capture would see it as not glitchy and I know I got a 100% great image of it but when I pasted it in paint to show here it was not effected with the glitchy part..

Which makes me think it's the cord? But how can it be? tried HDMI cord, MiniDP to HDMI on it and DVI hmm..

This problem just started happening recently.

Could it be Cataylst Control Center? Because I do have to set my screen to overscan to make it perfectly fit the edges.

I recently purchased a ThinkPad X270 with the 1920x1080 IPS non-touch display.  After only a very short time using it, I noticed that the display starting jumping and flickering very badly at random times.  The BIOS and all of the drivers were updated to what the Lenovo Companion tool recommended.  I captured some video of the behavior here: https://1drv.ms/v/s!AjP8R5t89zq2oXvMKmnuV_6l0fic I was hoping that this was just a bad individual unit.  I contacted support and explained the problem, and they set me up with a replacement.  Well, the replacement arrived yesterday and it's doing the exact same thing.  Videos of the new one exhibiting the problem are here: https://1drv.ms/f/s!AjP8R5t89zq2oXzhuWwFO34fh-s7 I've started the refund process for the new one because at this point, I suspect it is either a driver problem, a design problem, or a supply chain problem with the LCD panel.  I'm not sure what model I will ultimately upgrade to from my beloved x230 but unfortunately, I'm sure it's not the x270.

Hi,I recently bought a ThinkPad T570. However if I connect it to a second external screen with HDMI to HDMI I experienced a serious flickering. The screen goes black for 3-4 seconds and then ON for 15-20 seconds and so on. What I experienced is that if I start a game the problem is solved. I believe that is related to the fact that the Intel HD640 is beging deactived and the GeForce start to work. Magically, when I return to Windows the flickering restart. I also use the laptop in the office with the docking station but I did not experienced this issue, even if when I use Windows. I already tried to unistall and reinstall the latest driver, change the HDMI cable, tried the monitor with another laptop (the monitor is working perfectly) but nothing has changed.I am very disappointed because I can't use my second screen to work. Any solutions? Thanks in advance.

Once my Thinkpad W540 gets low on battery (like 35% or so), the right side of my screen starts to flicker, and doesn't stop till it's plugged back in. I tried updating the drivers on the Lenovo support site, but that hasn't helped, and I'm not sure what else to do.

every time i run Leap Motion apps, 3d coat 4.5, 3ds max, and blender, the software frame flickers, and the x button to close down the software looks like something is trying to close the program but cannot. i notice when i hover over the close x button it highlights red, so does the software when i load it up. i get no black screen or screen flickering only software. yes they are all legal software.

what i did, update drivers, uninstall intel drive, reinstall updated, changed resolutions, also same with nividia drivers, tried to uninstall p2 microsoft mouse driver and it reinstall itself back on. tried in safe mode but when i do a dis scan through command prompt it resets all my settings and re activates that cortona thing. when i go into safe mode it resets all my changes and resets cortona to be running on, when i want that thing completely off.

i even changed the flash count in registry, still flickering viciously. my windows 10 is acting allot like malware itself almost as if theirs a interface mask over win 10 actual os, in my opinion. i notice theres the usual setting to change everything but it you dig deep you'll see the original framework looking like gd o... HiThe notifications area of the taskbar has just started flickering (sort of). It seems that the icons are displayed with a bit of space between them and then it flickers and they are displayed more bunched up, and it cycles through this every second or so. It's very distracting but doesn't otherwise seem to be a problem. Nothing else on the screen nor on the taskbar flickers, just the icons like volume, keyboard, language, power, network connection...I have a Spectre x360 running Windows 10Help please.

I have got a problem on my Acer Aspire One AO751h. I don't exactly know how to describe it but it's like small rectangles flicker on my taskbar, also when I hover my mouse through items in my Start Menu, flickering kind of things appear on the borders of each item I mouse-over. But, when I mouse-over them in the taskbar, they disappear and reappear again. I tried to get a screenshot but the screenshot is normal! I just upgraded my OS to Windows 7 Home Basic four days ago. I think the problem started after I installed the Intel Graphics Media Accelerator 500, which is the latest version of the driver. The funny thing is, at times it flickers to the way I
scroll!!! It doesn't happen all the time, but most of the time! Sometimes it happens on the title bar of Windows explorer. I don't want to uninstall the driver 'cause without it my resolution goes down to 1024x768, which sucks! What do I do!?!

A:[SOLVED] Flickering Rectangles (mostly taskbar)

What site did you get the driver from? There's good and bad. With the old driver, what happened when you tried to increase (larger #s) the rez? Did you specify the driver or let the site automatically determine it? By answering the questions (post answers if necessary) you'll probably self solve the problem.

Hi... This time the problem isn't with my computer, but one of my housemate's. It's a Chinese computer (I think) and when she starts the computer up, it logs in as usual, but the taskbar and icons flash/flicker on and off and don't allow her to open the Start menu or click any of the icons. It stops after a while, but this time seems to vary.

Anyhoo, here's her HJT log...

Hi, I have the following issue since a couple of days (not sure it came with a recent windows/drivers upgrade): When I set the screen brightness to low, or the screen dims itself in a dark environment, it starts to flicker - there are flashes of white/blue as long as the brightness is low. Increasing the brightness gets rid of the problem. I tried disabling the panel self reflesh (PSR) which seemed to help others, but no success there. Anybody got the same issue and a possible solution? My specs: Windows 10 1709, Intel Graphics Drivers Version 21.20.16.4727 Video of the flickering:

Been searching on here on how to fix this issue, and I think I figured out how to fix it. At least, it is now working again for me.

1. Open regedit.exe
2. Navigate to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\Desktop
3. Locate ForegroundFlashCount
4. Change the value to 0
5. Close regedit

After I did this, my taskbar thumbnails quit flickering. Took it about 10 seconds for Windows to notice the registry change, and all has been well.

Nevermind, it only seemed to fix it for about 10 minutes, and then it reverted back.

Hi there,

I installed Windows 10 recently and everything was fine for a week.. Then I got a strange flickering line across part of the top of my screen. After a couple of reboots it seemed to go away.

Now the 'waiting' cursor & sometimes the task-bar keep flicking on and off at speed. This means when I go to open a Windows folder, or perform a function like shutting down, the menu disappears and I have to be really quick to do what I need to do.

When I try to play a streaming video & go to full screen, the 'fullscreen' message stays on the screen and the task-bar flickers constantly.

Weird. Thanks,
Lynne

A few weeks ago I did something rather stupid and downloaded a file that contained a bunch of malware. I was able to get rid of it, I thought---at least a bunch of malware detectors weren't turning anything up. But I realize I'm still having problems. There's one that's only a minor annoyance---sometimes windows won't minimize the way they're supposed to (like, I'll be playing something in Media Player Classic in windowed mode, but when I click away on my browser, the MPC window does't minimize.

But now I am trying to play a game and finding a real annoyance. The screen, I don't know how to say it, "flickers" off for just a second without the game being interupted every time I click, and furthermore the taskbar icon seems to disappear only to be instantly replaced with another sliding icon. I tried a clean boot, but that didn't seem to work.

A:Taskbar Icon Constantly Reloading/Window Flickering with Application

If you did a Clean Boot and this didn't resolve this issue this means that the problem isn't related to a Service.

You need to make sure that this computer is not still infected.  I will request that this topic be moved to the Am I Infected forum where the proper tools can be used to make sure it is cleaned.
