YOGA 920 Thunderbolt/EGPU Issue -HP Omen egpu

Q: YOGA 920 Thunderbolt/EGPU Issue -HP Omen egpu

I have recently purchased a YOGA 920 and a HP Omen egpu enclosure. I am having problem connecting it to my laptop.

First, I tried both port, there's the sound of connect and disconnect, and nothing shows on the laptop, and the laptop is not charging.

I have tried with power cable connected, and now it was connected. The egpu still was not charging (no power delivery), and it only works one port 2 (port closer to touch pad) with charger connected to port 1. If I switch them, the laptop goes blue scree. I can remove the power after it is connected but then there is no power supply.

It is kind of similar to the issue as MrKnowNothing https://forums.lenovo.com/t5/Lenovo-Yoga-Series-Notebooks/YOGA-920-Thunderbolt-3-Port-No-devices-fou....

I have tried different drivers but all of them do not work. I have updated BIOS and Type-C firmware from Lenovo to the most recent version.

One more thing. Is it normal that thunderbolt controller is not showing up in device manager when nothing is connected?

I have tried it with my friend?s xps, it works perfectly, basically plug and play.

I think it is not supposed to work like this and the egpu should have power delivery to my laptop. Even if there is no power delivery, it should still connect without power adapter connected. Is this hardware problem or driver problem? Is there anyone else have similar problems?

Thanks!

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

I receintly purchased the x1 yoga 3rd gen to use with my  ASUS ROG XG Station 2 eGPU. Shortly after connecting the eGPU, the computer disconnects it, then reconnects. I've updated all drivers, firmware, and software, tried a different tb3 cable, tried it in the second tb3 port while the charger is plugged in, and confirmed the eGPU works on another machine.

I've had my x1 yoga 3rd gen for about a year now, and love it. I've been using a thunderbolt 3 eGPU dock (aorus 1070 gaming box) as a dock for about the same amount of time now, since it gives me the convenience power and portability. Other than the occasional visual glitches and restarts, I haven't had any issues when I unplug my laptop from the eGPU dock, or plugging it in. However, yesterday after I unplugged my laptop from the eGPU dock, my laptop kept making a "connected USB" and "disconnected USB" sound. It looked like my Thunderbolt 3 software app kept crashing and rebooting. I also noticed that none of my usb c/thunderbolt 3 ports were working; the laptop says it's charging with nothing plugged in, and when I tried plugging in a charger, it wouldn't charge. The only solution I found was to disable Thunderbolt 3 in the BIOS, but I'm not sure if this is a software issue, or if there's a part of my motherboard that's fried. Does anyone have any ideas or suggestions for troubleshooting?

I knocked together an eGPU for my Thinkpad Yoga 370 today with an AKiTiO Node, a NVidia GTX 1050 and a thunderbolt 3 cable.it was all literally plug & play. Spent:  Node eGPU box $240, Refurb NVidia 1050 card, $135, spare thunderbolt cable, $25, upgraded RAM to 16GB DDR4, $160. Put it all together, plugged in T3 cable from PC to Node Box, HDMI from Node box to Lenovo 4K monitior.  Windows recognized new GPU and I loaded the drivers from NVidia.  Windows users the eGPU to drive the external monitor at 2560x1440, Intel integrated GPU drives the laptop panel at the same time.  Works as advertised, no issues.   I tested the setup by rendering video with Corel Video Studio Pro 2018 and the eGPU doesn't even breathe hard.  Ran DCS world (combat flight sim) on Steam (which wouldn't even load prior) and it works flawlessly on high graphics settings.  I'm a terrible pilot, but the visuals are pretty amazing. If you have any questions let me know but this was super easy. Pictures at this link: https://photos.app.goo.gl/kJP4LXCXcxwyXBAC2

My Yoga works fine with Thunderbolt 3 eGPU when i put it on when Notebook is running. If I try to restart or turn Notebook on with eGPU Dock I get no signal for screen. Not on Notebook Display and not on external Display.  There is no way to get a signal on any Port or to change output. The only Way then is a Hard Reset. After that everything works finde, even the eGPU.I tried this with Razer Core X and HP Omen Accelerator and Razer support said its a Problem with the Thunderbolt3 Driver.Anybody had this Problem too?I tried Drivers from Lenovo and from Manufactures.

Hello,I'm interested in buying the new x1 yoga when it becomes available.  I'm a graduate student and my focus is in deep learning.  I'm aware that there are other options available (NVIDIA built in), but I am interested in the portability of the X1.  I'm also aware that transfer speeds can be a problem when using an eGPU but it's my understanding thunderbolt3 could be "fast enough" for this application.Would I be able to do cuda programming with the x1 and an eGPU like the razer core + titan x though the thunderbolt 3 port? Thanks!

Hello, I'll be getting the new Thinkpad P52 mobile workstation soon and wanted to know (as I couldn't find this anywhere and this model is really new) - will it support connection of external GPUs (egpu) through one of it's Thunderbolt 3 ports? If so, are there any significant performance or heating limitations relating to this sort of usage for example for high-end gaming or 3D modeling applications? (assuming I don't use the internal dedicated Quadro P2000 gpu for this), are there such limitations on the external GPU itself?  (type, compatability etc.) Thanks!

I've recently been looking into buying an eGPU Enclosure such as the AKiTiO Node or the Razer Core. I've updated all the firmware and now I am running Thunderbolt Software Version 16.1.47.275. The Node and Core both specify that the computer needs to both have Thunderbolt 3 (which I have) and be compatible with external graphics. What does this mean? I have Thunderbolt 3, so wouldn't it be theoretically possible to run external graphics provided the firmware was up to date?
So in summary, my main question is this: Will/can the Dell XPS 13 9350 be able to use eGPU enclosures over Thunderbolt 3 now (or in the future if there is firmware updates being planned)?

Folks - Just wanted to share the early results of my experiment with adding a Thunderbolt 3 eGPU enclosure to my T570 laptop. I just got this up and running, but everything operates mostly as expected so far. The only negative items so far are that my Ultradock does not have a Thunderbolt 3 port, so I must connect the TB3 cable directly to the laptop. Also, when cold booting with the laptop installed on the dock, the bitlocker password screen will not display on monitors attached to eGPU. The logon screen only displays on laptop screen (even when laptop is closed). My configuration is as follows: System specs Lenovo T570 Thinkpad LaptopIntelŽ Core? i5-7300U CPU @ 2.60GHz8.0 GB RAMIntel HD Graphics 620Machine Type Model: 20H9000PUSWindows 10 (64-bit) eGPU hardware Akitio Node EnclosureNvidia GTX 970 with 3 ea 1920 x 1080 monitors attached Installation stepsInstalled updatedThunderbolt drivers (16.3)Plugged in Akitio Node with GTX 970 installedInstalled Nvidia driversUpdated Akitio Node firmware Benchmarks Cinebench R15OpenGL with internal Intel HD Graphics 620 = 31.80 fpsCPU with internal graphics = 290 cbOpenGL with Akitio Node and GTX 970 eGPU = 98.4 fpsCPU with external graphics = 326 cb Now running 3 x 1920 by 1080 monitors on the GTX 970 plus the laptop display. Has anyone experienced this issue below? I disable my internal Quadro M1000M, I plug in my eGPU (AORUS 1070 Gaming Box) via Thunderbolt, use it for a while. Then when I'm done using it, I unplug it, re-enable my Quadro M1000M and plug in my external monitor via HDMI.   The display driver crashes for both my Quadro M1000M and my Intel HD Graphics 530 and the external monitor never works.  Microsoft starts a Microsoft Basic Display Driver. I tried disabling and re-enabling both display adapters but external monitor still won't work, it just crashes the adapters again. The only fix to this issue I have found is to uninstall the Quadro M1000M in the device manager and restart the computer. Then after it restarts, I can use the external monitor again with the Quadro M1000M. So it's easy to do and not a huge pain in the butt, but if anyone knows a way to fix this issue without needing to restart my computer, that would be a great help.

Hi alls,I'm aware of this thread and several reviewers on the net about eGPU, plus some highly praises for this AORUS Gaming Box.Initially, I was not interested in the subject of eGPU, as I'm not a gamer. So, eGPU would be a waste of money, at excessive high cost, and not necessary for this high-end Yoga 920.But . . . when I tried processing some videos, the GPU usage in Task Manager stayed upward in the 98% high. Too bad, that I do this task often.Hence, I wish to start this thread, with some initial (perhaps naive) questions as follows:. Does it harm the laptop to be in high GPU usage in long term ?. If a hardware change is needed, is there a solution with more reasonable cost ? and small size for portability ?Looking forward to see many great debates. Thanks.

The latop has two thunderbolt ports and if I connect the gaming box and the normal charger the laptop still won´t charge, if I then disconnect the gaing box leaving only the lenovo charger the laptop starts charging again.

Brand new X1 Yoga 3rd Gen with i7 8650 and Win 10 Pro - "Known good" Aorus 1070 eGPU box (and factory TB3 cable that might be 18" long. I have been using the Aorus1070 with my Dell XPS 15 but the 2 lanes of PCIe on my XPS warranted an upgrade. I really like the X1 Yoga and want to jump ship from Dell to Lenovo but not if the eGPU issues cant be fixed.(I haven't owned/used an IBM laptop since back in 2000 when it was still IBM) Issue 1 - eGPU won't power on.Issue 2 - Computer freezes (with or without BSOD)Issue 3 - False charging (not the common issue)Issue 4 - Mouse freeze  Issue 1 - The Aorus box has no power switch and should automatically turn on when the computer turns on. The Aorus box will only power on around 1 out of 5 restarts/power-ons. When the laptop is up and running I can try unplugging and plugging in the TB3 cable and maybe 1 in 10 attemps prompts the Aorus box to power on. Most of the attempts to plug in the Aorus box while the laptop is powered on results in an instant BSOD. Issue 2 - Whenever the 1 in 20 attemps to power on the Aorus box is successful and I can use the eGPU I can sometimes get anywhere from 2-4 hours of gameplay out of it before freezes - Sometimes there will be a BSOD but other times the image is just frozen and the last 0.5 second of audio re-re-re-re-re-re-re-peats until I hard kill the laptop. Issue 3- The charging issue is not the one that google loves to show me when I search for it. So I know the eGPU doesn't produce sufficient power to power the laptop(it does 30w, when the laptop wants 45 or 60w), but I don't understand why that'd potentially cause crashing. To clarify crashing still happens when I plug it into the thunderbolt 3 non-power port as well., I have gotten it to work SOME TIMES(enough to install Nvidia drivers, and the eGPU enclosure drivers), but most of the time it just crashes my system. And it happens almost immediately after plugging the egpu in. For further clarification, my Dell XPS 13(with far inferior specs... 4gb ram, 8250u), has no issues with the eGPU enclosure and works perfectly with it. I'd just obviously rather use the eGPU with the more powerful cpu and more ram... 4gb is rather restrictive, but that laptop serves the purpose as a travel theater anyways(good screen for movies, not so bad headphone dac, and with the 8250u an amazing battery life). Specs:X1 Yoga 3rd gen with 8650U & 16gb of ram, 1440p hdr displayOMEN Accelerator with ASUS GTX 1080 Strix

I'm in the market for a new laptop- and I'm in love with the Yoga 920. As a digital artist and architecture student everything looks like what I would want in a computer. I showed the specs to my advisor and he says it's a "no-go" because it has an integrated graphics card. That the computer would be unstable in the long run without a dedicated one. I don't really game on my computer- but I'd need something that could render 3D elements and potentially allow me to do VR walkthroughs. For me the wacoom tech screen for drawing is what's really selling it to me and I can't seem to find the best of both worlds. I thought about just buying a gaming laptop and then getting a cintiq to satisfy that aspect for me but I'd be dropping $2000-$3500 on the low end- which is quite a bit more than the prices I was looking at for just the Yoga Does anyone know if I can get a Yoga 920 with a dedicated driver or if it's compatible with an eGPU? I'm worried that an eGPU might affect the stability by plugging it in and out.

To be honest, T480s would be even better, as according to tests, it's able to utilize CPU fully, thanks to good cooling system (make sure to get iGPU-only version though). And thanks to undervolting, you'll be able to elimimate throttling under prolonged load. You'll find more information in article below (both X1's were also tested): https://www.notebookcheck.net/A-performance-comparison-of-all-new-ThinkPad-notebooks.286486.0.html

Black Edition Nitro systems will offer full thunderbolt 3 support, which should support this. Models that are not black edition will use either  USB 3.1 Type C Gen 2 (10 Gbps) while others only support Gen1 (5 Gbps) which would not provide this ability.

is it possible to use egpu external graphics with hp15-272wm

A:hp 15-272wm and egpu

eGPUs are interesting. I have very mixed opinions on them. But to start with you need a port to hook it to. Your laptop has none of the common ports used for eGPU. USB 3.0 is too slow. USB-C (also called Thunderbolt) is perfect but you do not have that. You also do not have an expresscard slot...have not seen those for 5 or 6 years. The only option is the mini-pcie port where the wireless card plugs in. We have seen reports that people have had success plugging in eGPU cables into that port and running them to an eGPU dock power supply and external monitor.  It requires that you run the laptop with the memory and WLAN cover off (see p. 31 of manual below) and you obviously can't have wireless going at the same time.  Manual Also bear in mind your laptop has a very low end "Bay Trail" processor which is not an ideal gaming platform even if you can get an eGPU working.  You need one of these: https://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=9SIA8RU3967582 You plug this dock ($128) into the wireless card slot, then you need a video card for the dock (say $200) and a desktop power supply (say $50) and a decent external monitor (say $125)...so like $500 for this setup.  If this is "the Answer" please click "Accept as SOlution" to help others find it.

Hi All, May i ask if it is possible to use an eGPU on this laptop? i am planning to buy a mini PCI-E dock and hook it up with gtx1060. Will it work or not? also, the mini PCI-E dock will go to the wireless lan slot, may i know what the card slot is (Mini PCI-E slot or NGFF slot)? Thanks......

Hi I'm toying with getting an X280 to replace my 5 year old MacBook Pro. A small form factor is important to me these days as I make music when I'm out and about, but when I am using it at home I'd also like to be able to use it with an external GPU (the Razer Core X for example) to do some low end graphics work, and occasionally play some games of course. Does anyone know if the X280 has the ability to run external graphics via the Thunderbolt 3 port? It's not necessarily a deal breaker for me, the kind of graphics work I want to do is very low-res, low-poly stuff, and maybe the internal graphics will handle this just fine. It would just be good to know going forward - I called tech support and they gave me a vague yes, based on the X280 having Thunderbolt 3. Any information/experiences with this would be greatly appreciated! Thanks
