.avi files losing quality after transfer to external HDD

Q: .avi files losing quality after transfer to external HDD

I just got a WD 250 GB external HDD for storing video and music. After I copy .avi files to the external and then back on to my PC, I get blocks of color appearing in the video. The external drive is connected through firewire, and this only happens to .avi files

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Lose the Firewire. If it's a dual interface drive, try the USB connection.

I've had a number of systems (3 to be exact) that exhibited file corruption using Firewire for some reason. Different systems, different Firewire disks, same issue. I've since started using USB 2.0 all around (I have dual interface disks), and the problem has not reoccurred.

Hi everyone -
After my Dell laptop crashed, I was advised to get an external enclosure and transfer my old program files onto my new laptop. With lots of help from a local techie, I was successful in getting them all onto the desktop. Now I have an external enclosure for no really good use anymore (sold the old HD w/the broken laptop). A friend wants to create backup files & wants me to transfer them using this enclosure (PATA btw). I'm wondering if I can transfer the files from her old HD directly to disks or do I have to transfer them to her new computer and THEN to the disks? (she's getting a stack of CDRW's). Any help or friendly suggestions would be most appreciated!!!! THANK YOU!

Now that my computer is rebooted, when I try to bring my files in from my external harddrive, it says "Cannot Create or Copy: Access Denied--Make sure the disk is not full or write-protected and that the file is not currently in use". I can't figure out how to move my files, I have done this in the past and it worked perfectly. please help me!

My first thought would be perhaps the drive has an write-protect swich or parameter set and your trying to Cut and Paste rather than copy.

When you say reboot I guess you mean you formatted the system and have reinstalled Windows fresh?

Hi,

I have a Western Digital My Book external drive which is around 2 years old. In the last few months, I have been getting regular cyclic redundancy check errors when trying to access it. (I used to have a problem with pest infestation, so I suspect some little critters crawled inside the drive and caused trouble.) The drive is still usable, but I have to unplug it and let it rest whenever it acts up.

I now have a new external drive, and I need to transfer the files. Is there a faster way other than copy/paste? I tried to c & p a batch of folders last night (just a small portion of what's on the drive) and started getting the errors midway through.

Also--once I clear the original drive, would a reformat solve the problem?

Thanks for the help!

A:USB External Hard drive Taking Ages to Transfer files

Transferring that much data from USB to USB will take a long time. You'll be lucky to get 6Mbits/s since the bandwidth is shared. If you have other interrupt driven devices on USB, like a keyboard and/or mouse, it will drop even more.

If possible, try plugging the two drives into different hubs. Typically, the front panel and rear panel ports are on different hubs but not always. You'll need to check your hardware configuration to verify this. If your copy procedure is reoccurring, it might be worthwhile using eSATA ports or at least for one drive.

Hello. I'm ripping DVDs so that I can post snippets of scenes to put on Youtube videos within fair dealing laws. I'm trying to rip DVDs with Handbrake and it does create a file with playable videos, and there are no problems with the sound. However the picture quality comes out noticeably degraded. This might be a compression but I'm not sure.

I've tried adjusting the bar of the "Constant Quality -- RF" bar under the video section to increase image quality before downloading and adjusting over relevant variables but to no avail.

What do I need to do to resolve this issue?

My question is, how can I reduce the size of the video to maybe 320 X 240, or something near that size, without losing sound quality, and video quality? Or, is there something wrong in my code on my website, to where I can make it start playing earlier?

Hello,

Im trying to find a program (preferably freeware) that will resize video resolution without losing any quality.
I tried a program called videoenhancer, it seemed that it could do the job. it resized the video without making it pixelated.
but when i tried converting the resulting file was 18Gigs (from the original 190mb) and it didnt play with my media player complete with codecs.

A little help with the program or suggestions for other programs will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

A:making video resolution larger without losing quality

It's not possible to resize a video (especially make it larger) without losing video quality. Think about it. Your video has a certain amount of information to display the video. When you increase its size, you have to add more information. Result, crappy video.

That's why video (and pictures) are created in a larger size then reduced. It's also why HD and BlueRay exist.

I shoot all my footage on 16mm film which is then transferred to mini-DV by the film lab so I can import it into my hard drive for editing. Will the quality of the DV camera I use make any difference in the quality of picture I get? In other words, do the more expensive firewire DV cameras transfer a better quality picture? Or are all firewire transfers the same?

Since I'm not going to use the DV camera for shooting, is there a less expensive device I can buy that isn't a camera, yet will transfer mini-DV footage via firewire cable?

A:Best quality firewire transfer?

Absolutely not--the capture of digitized video is a lossless process over firewire.
God, I didn't know anyone was shooting 16mm regularly these days--I gave it up about five years ago--strictly digital now.

Hi , Im experiencing problems when transfering video from my Sony Handycam (DV) to my PC , or perhaps its better to say that the problem is with the quality of the video once burned. Whilst if connecting the camera to the TV gives great results on playback , I have found the picture quality is grainy if the video has been captured/encoded/burnt to DVD. I have used Sonys software , Nero and Roxio all with disappointing results. My PC has XP , and Im using the firewire cable that I was forced to buy as Sony didnt provide one.

Hi,
I bought a new laptop with Windows XP in it, I wanted to transfer some files from my Desktop PC which has Vista to my laptop with XP, I bought a Belkin USB Data Transfer Cable to transfer files with help of Windows Easy Transfer but when I installed the soft provided with it, it seemed that I can only transfer files from XP to Vista, but not the opposite. Is there a solution or must I go back to my retailer? Those unfinished Microsoft's products really annoy me.
Is there a soft which can do the same without changing the cable?
Thanks.

A:Transfer files from Vista to XP with Windows Easy Transfer

Did you install software on both?
Generally you will need to do so.

The simple approach if you have a router is just to make sure that the network name is same on both computers, then enable file and print sharing and make sure that the LAN and file and print sharing are not blocked by the firewalls on either machine and share the drive or folders you want and then you can see them in my network places , view workgroup computers on the other computer.

You can also do this with an ethernet crossover cable ,just connecting the ethernet cards of the two (*a crossover cable has the wires at opposite ends re arranged so the in wires on one end connect to the out on the other and vice versa)
Both windows and vista have file and settings transfer wizards and networking wizards designed to make this easier; but you can just do it all manually.

With your product did it say it was vista compatible?

I saved my files and settings from a previous installation of windows 7 to an external hard drive using windows easy transfer. Now when I try to transfer those files and setting to my new installation I get the following message:

I would like to purchase an external HD for use as a backup. I already have one external drive, a 250GB LaCie unit. I'm not particularly thrilled with it as it has a very annoying habit of losing it's synch with the system. I can be working and have the drive turned on, but there will be plenty of times where I go to the drive to access a file and the system doesn't show any files whatsoever. It will show main folders but none of the files within the folder. I have to shut the drive down and then restart it in order to view all the files again. As I said, very annoying. And so I don't really trust it that much and would like to have another drive as a backup.

The main use for the external drives is music (about 2300 CD's) and my most important files (documents and pictures).

I would like to have a minimum of 250GB available. Any suggestions? Thanks.

I have a 6GB internal harddrive on my notebook, and attached a 40GB external harddrive through a USB connection. I store all types of media on my external drive, particularly MP3's and AVI files. Everytime i play music being read off the external drive, while the music is playing, if the external drive reads or writes, which ever it is doing (everytime the activity light blinks) noise is heard. The song would play a little slower and loud scratchy static-like noise is heard. Why does this happen and is it possible to play music from the drive without hearing that other sound when ever other activity is occuring with the drive. Also, this only occurs when playing music, my MP3 files, not my video files.

I know it isn't my files, because I can play the ones on my internal drive just fine without hearing any unusual sounds while playing the music and doing other things that requires the drive to do other activities.

Let me add that if I'm playing music off my internal drive or playing a audio CD, and the external drive reads/writes (the activitity light blinks) I will hear the unusual sounds.

Please respond. Thank you.

A:External Hard Drive and Sound Quality

A USB external drive is probably the slowest drive ever created. I am assuming the lack of quality is from the very limited bandwidth that the USB 1.1 offers. Also the bandwidth is shared among all devises on the usb. Are you using a hub with other usb devises? I would try removing the other devises. See if that offers any help.
A USB drive is ok for extra storage, but I would copy the songs that you want to hear back to your original hard drive. GL

I have been installing all my drivers, everything seems to be functioning, except the USB 3.0 & 2.0 drives on the front of my desktop.
When I connect an external hard drive, it opens normally, but after a minute, the hard drive disconnects, the explorer window I had open closes, and a few seconds later it connects again, and I am able to open an explorer window again, and it just keeps doing that.

I have not encountered this problem with previous desktops, I'm not even sure what I would call this. I would appreciate your assistance.

I have searched for advice on the net and it seems like it needs re-formatting but there is a lot of data on the drive that I need and I do not want to delete it.
Is it possible to get the system to recognise the drive again without losing the files on there?
I really need help on this one as I have so many improtant files on there for me and my family....i feel like crying....and I am a guy....lol. Not a computer wiz but can fix if here are step by step troubleshooting solutions.
If anyone has a detailed step by step guide that won't delete anything will be so much appreciated.
Thanks.

It's sort of a weird problem, really. I have a mac with OS X connected to a vista PC through an ethernet cable. I'm able to access and copy folders with the pc, but when I do, only a small amount of the files are transferred. I'll tell it to copy a folder with several gigabytes, and it will successfully transfer like 100 mb. I need to transfer about 110 gb. I split it into a bunch of different folders, trying to do each one separately, but to no avail. No error message, or any other indication that there is a problem. It's as if vista simply ignores the majority of the files I'm trying to transfer. Any hints as to what might be happening? Thanks in advance <3

Well, nearly 10 hours have passed, so I'm going to shamelessly self-bump this thread. Sorry :[

I have just installed Windows 7 but have lost my FN F5 - External source - Projector functionality
It appears to work but a poor quality image comes to the screen and then is lost within a second

Are there any updated drivers for Windows 7 which I need or is it another issue?

Appreciate any help

Hello

Have you installed a display driver on your notebook? I doubt that you will find a driver for Windows 7 at the moment but in most cases the driver for Vista works on Windows 7 too.
Check this!!

Do you really need Windows 7 or you have installed it? It?s not released as yet and at the moment the driver support is not so good.

Hi all,

I recently bought an external usb hard-drive to use with my laptop. I formatted the drive, put my data from my old pc on to it, and then plugged it into my laptop.

There was no data on the new drive (nor on the pc). I rebooted the drive a few times and then I could see the data but not access it. Next time I switched it on there was no data again. Sometimes the data was there and sometimes not.

I decided to reformat it completely again and try it from scratch. I put some files on it, switched it off and waited a few minutes then back on again and the data was gone. After a couple of reboots the data was there again. Next time it was gone.

Does anyone know why it might be behaving so sporadically and how to fix it? I have already lost a lot of files so I am loathe to put anything on it until I know it works properly.

Many thanks, Phil.

A:External hard drive losing data?

What brand of drive did you purchase?

I would take the drive back if it is under warranty. It sounds like the hard drive itself is OK since you can see the files from time to time, but it sounds like there is a problem with the IDE to USB converting.

I saved my files and settings from a previous installation of windows 7 to an external hard drive using windows easy transfer. Now when I try to transfer those files and setting to my new installation I get the following message:

Windows Easy Transfer can't transfer your files and settings.

The message pops up only a few seconds after the transfer begins.
Why is this?! I need those files and windows has screwed me. Everything is basically the same as before I reinstalled. Same computer, same windows 7 installation just recovered to factory settings. Same system language as before. BTW I'm on a Toshiba L505 laptop running Windows 7 Home Premium.

I have tried all the usual suspects such as a clean boot and uninstalling my antivirus to rule out third party interference. I have more than enough space on both my computer and on the external hard drive. I have tried only transferring a user account a few MBs large. I have reinstalled the OS twice just in case something went wrong there. I have clicked on the .MIG file directly. All lead to the same error message. The transfer file seems to be intact and not currupt

Is there another software other than WET that can use the same transfer file that WET created to restore my files? Please help me solve this if you can or at least point me in the right direction because right now I'm clueless. I can't emphasize how important those files are to me. I've searched for solutions on several forums and it seems tha... Read more

I have two external drives that I'd like to share. I have them mapped as an X: and Y: drive.

I go into advanced sharing settings > permissions, and add Full Control for the group "Everyone".

I hit apply and it looks fine and dandy.

When I reboot my machine the sharing settings are lost.

When the computer initially starts up Auto Play opens for both drives. Not sure if this has anything to do with it though.

Any ideas on how to get my sharing settings to stick for both externals?

Have a look here.
Antivirus software may cause Event ID 2011

and if that doesn't help you can try manually altering the registry to be persistent through reboots.

Well, I finally gave up. I've scoured the internet for a solution. You'll probably find duplicates of this post all over. This has been a known software problem with Windows Easy Transfer for years and Microsoft has done nothing to fix it or warn users of the risks. Shameful!
Anyway, I managed to recover my files with this life saver of a program here>
MigRecover Utility for Microsoft’s Windows Easy Transfer | Visser Labs
MigRecover Utility for Microsoft's Windows Easy Transfer.
I can't express how grateful I am to the developer and the host for the download. You guys are the most awesomest people ever. Cheers.
Here's how you modify the syntax in commmand prompt if you used a password to protect the mig file in WET>
"Windows Easy Transfer couldn't open the file" on second attempt to recover files/settings
Just remember to change the source drive letter in "C:\SaveData.MIG" to the actual drive it's stored on if your MIG file is on an external drive like mine was; whether it's E:, F:, G: or whatever.
Good luck to anyone with the same issue who stumbles upon this post. I hope it helps you as it did me.

so i have a really high quality CD with .cda files on it.

windows media player lets me rip them as WAV and high quality mp3s at 192kbps.

can these .cda's be ripped to anything genuinely? like if i had a program that could rip to FLAC, would it really be FLAC?

i know you cant convert these things to anything genuine except for what it was from the start. except in a declining order of quality.

whats a good program to get FLAC files off this CD?

A:Question about getting best quality files off a CD

WAVs are every bit as good as FLAC. Both are lossless.

You could convert them from WAV to FLAC, but I don't know why you would other than to save space.

I'm not sure what you mean by "I know you can't convert these things to anything genuine...". If you convert a WAV to an MP3, it's a genuine MP3, etc.

I can't name a program that will rip directly to FLAC, but there may be some. The easiest thing for you is to rip to WAV and then convert to FLAC if you must.
