Old Dell Inspiron 5100 - need to keep running for machine controller that cannot use newer than Windows XP

Q: Old Dell Inspiron 5100 - need to keep running for machine controller that cannot use newer than Windows XP

Hello:I had a hard drive crash on an Inspiron 5100 running WIndows XP Pro, replaced it with a newer computer, but now need to upgrade a separate machine controller PC that was running W98. That hardware cannot be upgraded past Windows XP.So I formatted the crashed drive from the Inspiron 5100 along with a 2nd hard drive and proceeded to install XP Pro SP2 from an OEM install kit. I installed the product code that came with the OEM kit, but afterward wondered if I should have used the product code that was on the Inspiron 5100 case. I wasn't sure the OEM pack would like a different product code, and I only mention this in case it has anything to do with the setup problems I am having with reincarnating the Inspiron 5100.

The BIOS is A03 (2006) and it has a Dell-unique appearance and operation compared to the generic Phoenix and other common BIOS found on non-Dell many motherboards. The Dell MB will run diagnostics on one of the drives but not the other, after successfully wiping and running diagnostics on them with 3rd party resources (UBCD). The Dell says no boot drive found initially but pressing F1 allowed Windows to load anyway.I pulled the CMOS battery hoping it would forget its past life, replaced it with a new one and it's even less educated than before...it fails a floppy seek test. I tried to install a floppy drive, but realized there is no FDC cable present, and I haven't found an FDC port on the MB (yet). I aborted the FD install goal and now just live with the F1 to get Windows XP to load.It would be nice to get rid of that minor nuisance, but if it's because the BIOS doesn't like a 250 or 300 GB SATA drive, flashing the BIOS may be more trouble than its worth. So now, if I go to Device Manager, the only apparent problem is one entry for Other devices (Ethernet Controller, PCI Device, SM Bus Controller, Video Controller and Video Controller (VGA Compatible). An older forum post here (now closed, refers me to open a new post) with similar problems has links to drivers. So, at last, my question...If I select the Inspiron 5100 drivers I want to download, on a separate PC that has internet capability, I seem to be running into a problem that the download list wants to auto-install after download. Of course I don't want those to install on a Toshiba laptop. Is there a way to just burn the drivers to a CD and install them on the Dell, or can I only download them directly to the Dell machine? The 5100 doesn't have a network card at the moment (I don't remember removing it, but apparently did. Where it is intended to be installed, I cannot conveniently run a CAT 5/6 cable so I may go out & get a wireless NIC. I hope that doesn't present another driver problem.Question #2: I have never found a use to date for a PCI-buss slot on a PC, but now see there are various NIC's, including wireless, that can use the PCI-E buss slot. However, there are apparently other parameters to worry about: -1, -8, -16 variants, etc. Is the Inspiron 5100 motherboard with A03 BIOS to old to deal with a more modern wireless NIC, and I should just pick up a basic PCI slot wireless NIC?Question #3: If anything I said above about avoiding BIOS updating is making my effort more difficult, please advise if I overlooked a simpler approach.Even if I have to live with the F1 to boot into Windows quirk, the only remaining functionality I need for this machine controller application is network access...so I feel close to finished. Thanks for reading and any advice.

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

Hi,
I received a Dell Inspiron 27 7000 all-in-one pc early this week. I have used it in the last couple of nights (very light usage). The machine randomly goes black screen quite a few times every day. I can only force shut down the machine in order to reboot when the problem occurs. What's even worse, there are different issues when I try to start it again. Sometimes it complains I am using a non-genuine AC power adapter but of course I am. Other times it just shows different colors in full screen mode. Then the only way to start the machine is by unpluging it from the powerpoint for a few minutes so it somehow restarts from scratch.
Another interesting observable was: When I was doing skype screen sharing with my friend last night, it suddently had the black screen problem. I could still talk to my friend but no longer able to see the screen. Because I was sharing the screen, my friend saw the error message on my screen: Power surge on USB Port. Not sure if it's relevant but I looked it up online . Tried reinstall all the USB controllers but did not help.
I have also done all the windows updates, dell updates, drive updates but the problem remains unfixed.
I am an IT professional so good at troubleshooting most of the problems. This one seems to be a defect in the hardware/drivers.
Can any one please help?Thank you in advance.
Regards

Some of the newer systems, such as my XPS 9365 have something called modern standby.  If you are not aware a system will seem to behave strangely.
To find out if you have it, open an Admin command prompt and type powercfg /a to see if it is capable of normal sleep.  If it says connected standby in the first set of listings, it will behave differently.

I have just bought a new Inspiron 15 5100 with running Ubuntu with the plan of installing Win 7 which I have a DVD for.
I found that my new machine has no DVD drive so I made a USB with the Win 7 .iso
I have wiped the hard drive, created new partition, fixed MBR and am getting to a point in the Win 7 installation process where it is asking me for missing device drivers. I have downloaded all drivers on Dell.com for my machine and put on another USB stick but I cannot browse to them during the installation process. So I don't even know if I have the required drivers or not.
Can anyone help please? I'm sure someone else has successfully installed Win 7 over an Ubuntu installation. If so please let me know if you had similar problems and how you got past them.
Please help if you have. Thank you.

A:Inspiron 15 5100 - I am having trouble instaling Win 7 on my new machine because of missing drivers.

It has nothing to do with Ubuntu being on there. Try putting the drivers on the SAME USB you are installing with, but 99% of the time the missing CD driver message is because of bad installation media. If you downloaded the Windows 7 ISO, I would start by download it again.

There is a registry hack to allow XP to receive security updates but it is not recommended using it.

If you do not want XP on the computer consider installing a small linux distro. The computer came with 512MB of RAM according to the Specs. That is pushing it for XP let alone Vista. I doubt you would have a good experience with Vista on the D830 and perhaps that is why somebody installed XP.

Hello, I really need help with this one.
I bought this broken laptop it will not post.
Just a black screen, when I try and boot it up all three lights on the front come on for a sec then just the power light is on

I tried to turn on the Numlock but the light wont toggle for the keyboard.
I hear the fans and I can hear the HD spinning up.

I tried to plug in a monitor into the external port but its still black.

It has 2 memory slots both filled with 256megs each I removed one switched them around, still nothing

The thing seems to charge when plugged in the charging light on the front comes on and blinks.

The DVD or CD drive seems to spin up and read a disk when its in there.
Of course you cant see anything but?

I am running out of Ideas.

I wouldnt think that both Memorys could be hosed.

Only thing I can think of is The processor,,Mother board,, Maybe the video card?

Are there any known issues with these that could highlight one of these 3 possiblitys?

Any help on this would be great thanks in advance

I had a problem resolved about three months ago. It's outlined herehttp://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/t/129285/red-circle-white-x-ultimate-defender/Since that problem was fixed, my computer has been doing weird things. I will get the occasional "blue screen o death" for no apparent rhyme or reason. It'll just happen without any consistent pretext to it. Second, sometimes my computer won't boot. I'll turn it on, and nothing will happen. Nothing. It'll go "beep beep beep.......beep" and the caps lock light will either blink or come on steady. If I turn the computer off and try again, it'll eventually boot normally. I replaced the hard drive about 4 months ago (the old one went bad). It's a Dell Inspiron 5100 with Win XP. It's five years old. The hardware profile is the same as it was in the link. Go ahead guys -- you tell me what you need, and I'll get it posted.{MOD EDIT: I moved this here from infected,~~boopme}

I need to know how Dell inspiron 5100 2.66Ghz CPU could be possibly overclocked. Is there anyone who done the overclocking to this kind of laptops before or have some helpful tips on how to do that?

A:Overclocking the Dell Inspiron 5100

Overclocking this unit is not wise. It cannot handle much overclocking, and has a very high failure rate when you try to bypass the protections against it. Your computer will definitely be at risk of a shorter life if you are successful in boosting the clock.

My laptop crashed last month and would not boot up since then. I kept getting an error message that said "missing ntldr" or something like that. So I dug up my old XP Pro disc and tried to repair but was unsuccessful. So I reinstalled and chose the option to leave my memory unchanged. So now it starts and my memory is still there under my old Administrator name but nothing is active. None of my old programs, drivers, or software will operate. Is there a way to restore any of that to work right again without reinstalling everything?

In all probability, your drive is dying.A dvd drive has two lasers, one for cd and the other for dvd.Perhaps the laser reading/writing cd has gone kaput. If that is the case, the other laser for dvd may follow suit shortly.
Even oyherwise also, depending upon usage, 3 years is a pretty reasonable life span for a dvd drive.Stsrt looking for another drive

A:Dell Inspiron 5100 boots but hangs

Ok, lets talk a minute about your windows xp load on your hard drive... How old is it? I mean how long have you been running this install of Windows xp? How did it run? Any viruses or issues with file curruptions now or in the past? How did it (your laptop) function just before all this happened?

Assuming your xp is microsoft legit, I would attempt to reinstall Windows and system drivers.. Yup, a full reformat and reload of your hard drive... The benefits here is that during the format portion in this procedure, the format tool will check your hard drive health by looking for dead sectors... If you have too many dead sectors Windows install will come to a hault, this is a sign that your hard drives life span has come to an end.... But if you have no hard drive bad sector issues you might just need a full, fresh, install of Windows...

I give this advice not knowing some key details like how old your system is, any previous problems with your systems windows health or previous hardware issues... Also, my advisery aboved is based on the fact that you are still unable to get your current windows to load and run...

If you don't know or you are unfamiliar with re-loading Windows and system drivers you should either research it, and also make sure you have all the software you will need, atleast your Windows xp cd and you Nic/ethernet drivers... Dell is pretty good at providing online drivers, or see a pc tech/ or a pc store if this is too much for you...

I decided to at least run ComboFix initially. Results are posted below.

A:Dell inspiron 5100 laptop overheating.

First off, welcome to techspot!

Now on to your question.

Now you didnt mention what make/model your CPU was and how you were getting the temp. Is that temp at idle?

Notebook CPUs are cooled with a small cooler in a very confined place. Heat will naturally get high, and if your CPU will get pretty toasty under load. (Gaming, ripping music etc) and there is not that much you can do to cool it down, but you can try

A. elevating the notebook. I put mine on bottle caps when I game and I notice a couple of degree difference.
B. Buying a aftermarket cooler to put on the bottom of the laptop. I have never used one so I can not say if they work or not. But the reviews on newegg seem to be positive. An example of these coolers can be found here
C. You could go as far as removing the panel under your CPU or even reapplying thermal paste on the CPU heatsink but that would void the warranty of the laptop and should only be done if you know how to apply thermal paste properly.

hope this helps!

Sean

PS. Speedfan is a great utility but it has some chipsets/CPUs that it simply will not work on, my laptop being one of those as well.

My son was using my laptop a few months ago and put a boot password on it. I went to get into yesterday and he can't remember the password. Help.

A:Dell Inspiron 5100 HDD password lost

This might help

Can you still access the CMOS? If you can do that it is usually possible to tell it not to use a password on boot. Well maybe, but it is worth a try. It depends on how the password was invoked. If it was as a user in windows with admin privilages it could be tough.
I am not sure if you mean a password that is only for the software program such as windows or it if is not going to let you boot the computer at all. The cmos password can be removed usually as I said earlier. The one in windows boot could be a bigger problem and I think there are programs that can help fine it for you, but I will have to ask around. I always have to write mine down especially now that I am getting older.
Now if this is a Cmos password and you cannot seem to get into Cmos it might be necessary to clear the cmos. This will not be the end of the world but you will have to install all the drivers for the devices again. This might work well from your supplied disks if you were given any. I do not want you to reinstall windows as that will erase all your data. Clearing cmos will necessitate going into the laptop to remove for a min or so the cmos battery and of course first of all, the reglular laptop battery for this to work. I can understand you might be afraid to do this so you might want to take it to a tech that is not. It is not a hard thing to do and would take only min I would assume. This resets cmos and does not affect what is on the hard drive and in windows.

Hi,

I just reformatted an old Dell Inspiron 5100 with XP SP3.
All drivers are installed and there are no exclamation marks in the Driver Manager.

The network card is a Broadcom 440x 10/100 Integrated Controller.
When I connect my network cable to the machine it doesnt not detect the connection. I tried the same cable in another computer and it is working fine so I know that there is a connection, however, in this machines it does not detect it.

Any ideas on this issue or how to identify the problem?

A:Does not detect network connection in Dell Inspiron 5100

You've confirmed that the network adapter driver is installed and the network adapter is working properly, and you've confirmed that the CAT5 cable isn't bad, so neither of those is the problem.

Try resetting the cable modem and then restarting the computer.

I have a Dell Inspiron 5100 laptop with a Radeon Mobility 7500 video card and a Sigma Tel Audio sound card.

Hi Need some help, I have an inspiron 5100 that I bought couple of year ago. few month back I noticed that the machine is not charging the battery when the laptop is on. as sson as I shut down and turn off teh laptop, teh charger stats working on the battery. So I don't beleive it is a battery problem but rather a charger one, I'm wondering if someone know if it is a software related and how to fix it.

thanks

A:Dell Inspiron 5100 Battery Charger not working

Check very carefully for full contact from the charger points, and the best way to clean them is with a pencil eraser, followed by denatured alcohol and a queue tip. The contacts do become weak or bent, which can cause the problem.
There is no software that affects that model, but there is a chip in the battery that counts the number of full charges. Onces it reaches that magic number, it stops further charging even though good otherwise. This is to prevent fire and other damage as the battery ages.
Otherwise, you need someone with experience using a soldering iron, to replace a couple of doohickies inside the case.

You will find all the info here including manuals.

As you have no fans running this sounds like a power supply failure which could be internal.

Post Windows 10 Creators Update, there have been several issues affecting the Dell Inspiron 7567.

I've made several posts on this forum and the Nvidia forum outlining my issues:
CPU throttling while system is being stressed (Aida64: CPU+GPU stress test replicates this issue within the first 2 minutes).  See the attached video demoing the issue:
www.youtube.com/watch
I've discovered with the assistance of Yan(MELSunny) from this forum (a user who recently purchased the i7 variant of this laptop) that the throttling is caused by the later builds of Windows 10 (creators update).  WIN10 build 14393 is confirmed to be working without these issues.
If you expect to play any video games on this "gaming" laptop, you CANNOT update your operating system.  If you enable windows update, Microsoft will pull the latest build immediately causing your system to become unstable and throttle for no reason.
I HOPE Dell reads this and works with Microsoft to address this in future Win10 builds.  If any of you are experiencing this issue, roll back your OS or reformat.

To disable windows updates do the following:

Hi Turboman750,Thanks for posting. In researching this, I found that upgrading the BIOS may resolve this issue,  please try updating your system BIOS to version 1.0.3 or later.  Thanks.

Hi,
I'm looking for driver for Intel SD Host Controller device, a part of Dell Inspiron 14 3452, for Windows 7 x64
Device ID: ACPI\VEN_8086&DEV_0F14 or ACPI\80860F14 as it appears in Windows 10 installed there now.
Hardware identifier apps detect that that's part of Braswell chipset.

Please help with finding the driver.

What I checked:
1. Intel and Dell driver download resources, including www.dell.com/.../advanced drivers for chipset, including extraction of drivers from all relevant driver packages.
2. Intel's and Dell's Update apps to find drivers.
3. Whatever Windows 7 installation app gets from the internet when pointed to go online at the start of Windows 7 installation, as there is an option to get drivers from internet at the beginning if Widows 7 installation is running from under Windows 10.
4. Alternative websites and forums for drivers.
5. Driver packages from other vendors for their laptops using likely the same hardware.
6. Drivers for Windows 10 and Windows 8.
7. Dell's support including phone based ones.
8. Intel community.
9. BIOS update - done, didn't help.
Nothing helped.

Details:
I can't get drivers for Windows 7 using Windows Update as now I have Windows 10 installed on that laptop. I can't use any kind of driver downloader app as now I have Windows 10 on a laptop I need drivers for, and that downloaders can get drivers only for OS version they are installed on. A:Dell Inspiron running Windows XP

First -- NO ONE should be using XP online for any purpose -- it's been over three years since that OS saw any security updates.
That said, it sounds like the problem is with the networking stack on the system - if you must use it, try reinstalling the network drivers.
That community service organization should be made to understand the potential liabilities of running an insecure OS online -- it isn't hard to imagine personal data being easily compromised if that system is used online.

I have a Dell Inspiron 1545 running Windows 7. I try to turn on my computer, it goes through the Dell logo screen and comes up to a black screen with a blinking white cursor in the upper left corner and will not go any further. I have pushed F2 and F12 during the Dell logo screen, but nothing there will help me in anyway. I have run the diagnostics for my computer, but it reports no errors, everything passes. I have also tried hitting the F8 and Ctrl+F11 keys during the Dell logo screen, but neither of these do anything, I have the OS disc for reinstallation, but because of the computer not going past the black screen with the white blinking cursor in the upper left corner, I cannot reinstall Windows because it will not restart correctly. What do I do?

A:My Dell Inspiron 1545 running Windows 7 won't boot. What do I do?

If you have not run the extended (takes a couple of hours) hard drive test, that's first. F12 at powerup.  IF the drive passes the extended test, then you will likely be faced with a manual install of Windows.  Start by ordering a Windows disc:

I recently bought a Dell Inspiron 531 at a garage sale. It came with a version of Vista that was cluttered up, full of viruses and in general full of problems. I don't like Vista anyway (I generally run Kubuntu or Mint for most of my computing), and I have a generic MS Windows XP sp2 install pack laying around. After installing XP, I loaded my linux OS's as usual, with no problems. The problem is with the XP install. It appears that Dell, in it's wisdom, made the Inspiron 531 specifically for Vista and the standard drivers available on Dell's site don't function well with XP (can't connect with the Web, graphics "roll-over" with the bottom showing at the top of the screen, and generally don't work well with the onboard graphics card 'Nvidia GeForce 6150'). Does anyone know a scource for drivers that will 'work-around' this issue? I know that the order the drivers are installed is important, so I wiped the drive and made a fresh install of Windows with no changes. The system setup is: Dell Inspiron 531 with AMD Athlon 64X2 Dual Core Processor 3800+ running at 2.0 Ghz with 4Gbs memory. I am set up for triple boot on two HDDs running Kubuntu 12.10 and Linux Mint Maya on one 260gb Hd and Windows XP Home edition Sp2 on a 40Gb Hd. I've searched this site and seen mention of a couple of users with XP running on this model, but no mention of the preferred drivers. Dell has been no help, as this is a discontinued model. Thanks ... Read more

Hi gang.
Thanks for all your useful help in the past.

Here is my latest problem:

My daughter,s old acer aspire one, (The little 10 inch screen model), is dead and I have bought a newer one on ebay.
The old machine ran XP and the new one has windows 7 installed.

I want to transfer all her files,(Nope, she never backed anything up to an external hard drive), onto the newer machine.

I was thinking that I could maybe, pop the hard drive from the old machine into the new one. Copy all her files onto an external Hd. Put the newer HD back into the newer machine, then copy the files onto it from the external HD.
STOP ME RIGHT NOW IF I AM WRONG PLEASE!!! (I wont attempt anything until I,ve read at least one reply).

It seems like a logical solution to me,(Not being a techy), but I dont want to risk wrecking the newer machine.

Any advice on recovering files from the old HD much appreciated.

I have run into an incredibly odd issue with my inspiron n17110 while running windows 10. It appears that the dell drivers are malfunctioning, and the result is not pretty.

The graphic driver is not the issue. Dell's software is. I have eliminated both graphic cards from the cause.
What got me to point the finger at dell is that when I press the physical button on the top right of the base that turns off the screen (sort of like a "force to screensaver") is pressed and then the screen woken up, the issue is immediately resolved. I'm fairly disappointing that a device that is less that 4 years old has still not had a critical issue like this resolved yet.
I guess my question is, has anyone else experienced this, and is there any way to fix it for the time being? Thanks!

Unfortunately, Dell does not have any Windows 10 drivers available for this computer. It has not been tested for the Windows 10 upgrade. You may have issues with the hardware on this computer if you have no Windows 10 drivers.

hi there,

i am a new user, and since past week my laptop has not been operating correctly. I am not a techie person, but feel I am fairly good with computers in general, but this problem I have is a strange one.

I am using a Dell Inspiron on Vista, and recently every time I start up my laptop, I see the big Dell logo load up as normal, and then it goes to the blue updates screen, and then runs the timer saying 'update 1 of 3' and it will run up to nearly 100% complete for the first update and then the laptop will turn off by itself, restart and then its back to the same updates screen again. This will keep happening continuously each time I switch the system on. Its nothing to do with the power either as this happens even when its plugged in.

One time I actually switched it on (after it being off for 3 days) and it loaded onto the normal Windows menu screen, and I instantly loaded my Kaspersky software to run a scan, which it started, and then the laptop shut down and then again back to the blue updates screen, which it has been doing constantly since then.

I even tried the Diagnostics scan which you do on start up by pressing F12 (I think), which didn't come up with any problems, and then when Diagnostics scan was finished, it again went back to the blue updates screen.

I even tried pressing Ctrl + F11 on switching on the laptop, trying to get it to erase everything and go back to factory standard, but even that wasn't working. I don't mind losing ... Read more

Hi,

Can you boot into safe mode?

Switch on your laptop and instantly start tapping F8, if you get to the selection screen, select Safe Mode.

If this works trying restoring your laptop back to a day or two before you downloaded the latest updates for now.

Just bought an Inspiron 5759 from Dell Canada.
Touchpad is very squirrelly - move around and it randomly perceives a click hence starts moving or invoking stuff.  Try to click left or right button (bottom left or right of touchpad) and the cursor moves so I can click on wrong thing easily.  Looked for Touchpad settings under Control Panel Mouse.  Nothing there specific to touchpad - just generic mouse settings.  Looked in Device Manager - Mouse and Pointing Devices - see HIID compliant mouse and PS2 compatible mouse.   Driver for either is from Microsoft dated 2006.
Ok - load newest driver from dell.com.  Claims it installs ok - wrong.  The Dev Mgr shows same Microsoft drivers.  Manually force driver to Synaptics - Dell TouchPad.  Looks like it succeeds.  Now, Dev Mgr shows two mouse devices: Dell Touchpad and PS2 Compatible mouse.  Try control panel - Mouse.  Now I see a Dell Touchpad tab but the only field - Change Dell Touchpad settings - does nothing.
Spent 6 hours trying to get help from Dell Support - worst experience with any support organisation (other than HP who managed to toast a notebook via remote control while trying to install a printer driver - never did work.)  Absolutely no improvement in situation.  Four times put on hold and line drops.  Considering strongly returning the notebook.
Went to BestBuy and looked at 8 Inspiron  and XPS computers on demo.  Not a sin... Read more

A:Inspiron and XPS laptops running Windows 10 cannot install Dell/Synaptics Touchpad driver

With Win 10, touchpad drivers are found in the Win 10 Settings, selected in the Start Menu. In addition, many newer laptops are using a Precision touchpad, a Microsoft inspired pad. The driver is incorporated in Windows itself, and a regular driver will not work. This is why you don't see anything in the "old" Windows Control Panel app or in the Device Manager.

Have reinstalled XP on a friend's Dell Inspiron 510m and got it onto the Internet via a Belkin USB Adapter.
While on the internet I've downloaded and installed all Microsoft updates and updated drivers.
I have got the correct location (U.K.) Network Adapters:
Intel Pro/100 VE Network Connection
and also downloaded Dell R83099 TrueMobile 1300 WLAN Mini-PCI Card and installed.
The wireless does not work or appear in Device Manager.
Yellow question mark in Device Manager shows Other Devices > Network Controller.
I cannot find a driver for this anywhere.
The Dell site does not recognise the Service Tag and I'm at a loss as to where to look next....
I've found plenty of references to others experiencing exactly this issue but have not seen a solution.
Really need some help on this,
TIA

---------
Use Speccy to provide details of your computer's configuration.

Download, http://209.62.107.107/speccy/download/standard , install, and run.
After Speccy has finished gathering information, click File > Publish Snapshot.
Click Yes. A web address will be displayed.
Click Copy to Clipboard and paste it in your next post.
Include your computer's manufacturer and model number, if available.
