Black Screen when turning on Screen - Possible motherboard malfunction? Please help!

Q: Black Screen when turning on Screen - Possible motherboard malfunction? Please help!

Dear all, Happy new year and all

I wonder if you could help...

My husbands laptop this evening will not turn on AT ALL. It was working perfectly well a few days ago:

When the power button is turned on all that happens is the power light turns green. There is no sound coming from the hard drive (the hard drive light doesn't even show). In addition, there doesn't seem to be a fan working. And finally, there is a light strange noise (not a hard drive noise).

I am wondering whether it is a motherboard issue????
Woud creating a recovery bios boot CD help? Would like wipe the hard drive?

The major problem is that the laptop is used for all our business transactions and GASP.... we haven't backed it up, so we could potentially lose very important data
Many thanks and I do hope somebody is out there to help us.

Much geekness

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hello potential saviors,

My computer (HP Pavilion dv6700 running Windows Vista) was running without a problem when I noticed that my Symantec icon had a red exclamation point on it. I clicked on it to see that the first of two items (I cannot recall what they were called but they were the two types of protection that Symantec offers) was not working properly. (Side note: My Windows Security Center had been telling me for a couple of weeks that Symantec was reporting in a format that was not compatible with the Security Center, but Symantec itself was telling me that its protections were in place so I ignored the problem).

I tried to fix the problem but Symantec was only giving me the option to click on a button called "Options" and it didn't seem helpful, so I tried going to Windows Security Center to fix the problem there, but then my screen went black and didn't respond to Control Alt Delete or anything else I tried. I forced it to shut down, restarted it in safe mode, opened Symantec and tried to fix the problem but got an error message about my Symantec registration.

I restarted the computer normally and opened Symantec, but now both items were not working. At the top there was a message alerting me to the fact that both forms of protection were not working and there was a button saying "fix now". I clicked on that and nothing happened. I assumed that my computer had not fully started up at that point and clicked "fix now" again after ... Read more

A:Symantec malfunction, then start up to black screen

Get rid of the symantec. It doesn't work right with Vista, (as you can see), no matter WHAT they claim. Same with Norton, of course, since they are the same company and the same crappy results when used with Vista.

I went into the Bios Setup Utility and reset to factory defaults. I then changed the boot order so that I would boot from DVD before HDD. For some reason this did it. It now works. Maybe it just needed time to rest? Because this hardly sounds like the solution to my problem.

Hello everybody.  I am really sad cause I think will loose my entire information.  I just bought (with so much effort) a new laptop on October 2015. Now, seven months later, when I put the ON BUTTOM, it does not turn on. I just hear all the process of turning but the screen is black.  The MAYUS KEY blink with a white light: 3 times and a pause, 3 times and a pause... Wanna know what can I do. I am completely sad and angry at the same time. My way of living is all I have there.  PLEASE HELP ME! Thanks.

Hey there this is my first post here.

So I turned my laptop on as usual to an unexpected black screen and a frozen cursor at the top left. Nothing came on the screen prior. I then tried turning the machine off via the power button to no success so I had to pull the battery.

Now it no longer turns on at all! I've tried discharging it too and nothing

I'm using a Compaq presario. Any help will be seriously appreciated.

I have a Sony P93-A and it intermittently has a black screen when I turn it on the automatic mode. By this I mean I can't see anything on the LCD screen. I have sent it in to Sony repair 2x and they say nothing is wrong.

Am I missing something simple here? Has anyone else had the same problem?

The only variables would between the repair shop and me would be the memory stick and the batteries.

Could aging batteries cause this problem?

Thank you for any insight you might have.

I realized after doing this many times that if I leave it on this black screen after a good 10 to 15 min it goes onto the logon screen and I type in my password and it logs into the computer. Takes a while to start up so I try to run a virus scan and then it will restart the computer and nothing happens. Also I am able to log onto safe mode just fine but if I have to many things going on it freezes and I have to restart the computer and I am then back to square one.

i've got a little problem lately. It started first when i played Overlord II. The screen suddenly turned black, sound went on for a while and when i alt-tab'ed after a minute or so sound stopped and i could get back into the game. but it kept makin this problem every few minutes so the game got unplayable. thought i wait for a patch, maybe its a game problem...
then i installed call of duty 5, same problem, only i can't get back into the game... and its got the 1.4 patch installed.
all of this happened without any error, drivers are up to date (had the driver reset problem a while back but the latest nvidia drivers seemed to get rid of it).
overheating is not the problem, gc temperature is 64C according to everest, cpu rarely goes over 60C.
Any suggestions? other games like fallout 3, streetfighter 4, prototype, etc. work great. all of the games are set to 1650x1080, worked fine so far... changing settings didnt work either....

A:black screen indefinate when turning on

I left my laptop off over the weekend and it had the same symptoms. I swapped the hard disk out for another harddisk. The new hard disk has windows 7 on and the bios reported it couldn't boot. This was different because i could see something of the bios on the screen at least. Then i plugged my laptop hard disk back in and the screen worked and it booted to windows. I dont know why the laptop is now working. Very odd. I've never seen this on any previous laptops or desktops.

Before you read this, I am not very good with tech.

My computer is a HP PC with Windows 7. If someone could tell me how to get more information by typing something on the computer, that would be great.
I have avast!, I have 6GB Ram, Nividia Graphics Card (yet again, if someone could tell me how to get more info) and my computer has some problems.

When I turn my PC on, it takes around 5 minutes of the mouse in the middle of a black screen for it to get to the screen where you log in.

After that, the computer is okay. Recently, however, it has started to make a really loud noise, and is getting very very hot. It burns if I put my skin on it.

When I play games like LoL, Dota 2 and Arma 2, my screen sometimes goes black and the only way to fix it is by turning my PC on and off, and when it takes 10 minutes to get back to the point where I can open the game, this is very detrimental to my gameplay.

To be more specific, the screen has a little cut out where I can see a black screen with lines in it for a split second, then the screen goes black. I can still hear and talk to my friends in Teamspeak, but then, sometimes, after about 20 seconds, the sound cuts out and gets stuck on the sound last heard before it cut out.

Black Screen? My computer randomly turns off alot, and when it does, I am usually playing games.
Now, when I turn it back on, it loads up the HP screen, then it goes to a black screen with a mouse in the middle of it for what I timed as around 5 MINUTES. ... Read more

A:Screen Goes Black After Turning On Computer

If I read this correctly it seems as if even on another monitor it has a bit of an issue.  Have you tried getting into safe mode as you boot up?  Try tapping F8 repeatedly as it boots, if it works in safe mode that would rule out a hardware issue.

Hi Everyone,
The problem that I have been experiencing within the past week is very strange. I will just be happily using the computer, and all of a sudden, the screen goes black, and I can't do anything. I don't get a blue screen, no warning. It just happens. The most recent incident happened 10 minutes ago. I was burning a CD while listening to some music. The screen turned black, my music was frozen, the same 2 seconds, was playing over and over... nothing would work, the "working" light on the tower was blinking, and then stopped. Does anyone know what this would be caused by, or even if they have heard of anything like this happening to someone they know.
Thanks for any information.

A:Strange Problem...Screen Turning Black!

How long have you had your current screen? Also if you have a spare monitor does it work fine with that or do you still get a black screen?

This morning, when I turned the PC on, the monitor only showed a black screen. It was working well last night though. Th PC seems to work normally as it seems like it reaches the desktop part with start menu and all the short cut Icons. I know this because after waiting for a while, I press the windows button then press "U" two times(it's the hot key for shut down and turn off). The light around the power button of the monitor keeps on blinking instead of a consistent light(this thing usually happens after turning the PC on while there's still power on the monitor until the AVR is turned off). There were no beep sounds and such when turning the PC as it never had those kind of sounds even when things are okay.

If this helps, the fan for the video card is still working as other fans as well.

What could be the problem? Video Card? Monitor? Monitor to PC connection? I probably just need to know which is the problem for now.

EDIT: I'm not very knowledgeable on hardware terms and I'm not very good at this stuff as well so I probably won't try to do changes on my computer by my own.

Hi guysAbout an hour before, I tried turning on my laptop. Win 10 booted, and then hanged right at the login screen. The cursor wasn't moving and it was like that for a few minutes. Eventually I got fed up and pulled out the battery (a big mistake). Then the screen was black after I switched it on again. Lights were glowing, fan moving but nothing on the screen. I kept it like that for a few minutes. Then, I switched it off by holding the power button, removed battery, connected ac adapter and pressed the power button and it got switched on! It started working normally but then restarted suddenly. But this time, instead of booting all the way to the desktop, it stopped at windows logo and then gave me the blue screen of death. Some system file which I don't remember was 'lost' or had 'an error'. I restarted, This time again it loaded to login screen and then restarted. There was 'winload.exe' now instead of the previous file on the blue screen of death. Again restarted and now it won't show anything. Tried like 50 times already. Lights glowing, fan moving but no display. I guess the windows has been corrupted or something. But how do I acces bios now to launch installation cd or to usb boot? Thank you so much.

Any clues? My guess would be temps but they look fine on paper. Maybe the psu getting too hot? Can motherboards overheating cause this?

Hello again.

I recently purchased my parts and monitor about a few months back. I have a Samsung Syncmaster 226BW. It is in good condition and when it works, it works very well.

However, there are times when I start my PC, my monitor will only display content for a few minutes until it just turns black (and other times pink). The power button on the monitor says it's still on and not hibernating or turned off. I would then have to restart my computer to bring back the display. And it always works the second time I start my PC if this problem occurs.

Also, when it turns black or pink, I blindly type the restart sequence (windows key -> up arrow -> left key twice, ctrl+alt+delete doesn't restart my PC). Once it starts to restart the computer, often times the mouse arrow appears in front of the black/pink screen. Just thought it was unusual.

Does any of you have an answers for this? I updated my monitor driver but I forgot if I updated my video card driver to the most recent update. I am going to do that now. But I really want to know if there are any other solutions?

I'm not sure if this is in the right area or not.

I had my laptop on and running fine for a few hours accumulatively (because I did put it in sleep mode ocasionally) last night and then one time I turned it off and when I turned it back on it lit up but nothing came up on the screen.

I turned it back off by holding down the power button and decided to let it cool down. Later I turned it back on and it was working fine seemingly and then it would "turn off" because the screen went black but the lights were still on. Then it would refuse to turn on for a while. I let it set overnight and I turned it on and it seemed to work again but then it did that thing I mentioned where the screen goes black but the lights are still on and it won't turn back on now. Well, it will turn on because the lights will be on but nothing will show on the screen.

I also think there might be a chance there is a virus on it. My alert keeps popping up and telling me that there is but it says it's quarantined and infected or something. I don't really know how to explain it.

Few month ago motherboard of my 7720 inspiron decided to pass away. suddenly the laptop had turned on and when plugging the AC adapter the blue light indicator turned off. I've understood that the motherboard is broken (after discussing with some technicians as well). recently I've purchased new motherboard and hopped that my laptop will be back to life but it won't...
after replacing with the new motherboard the light indicators are turning on and even the quick access buttons are turning on as well but the screen remains black and blank without the fan working! I've tried the following:
1. turning off the laptop and pressing the power button for 15-20 sec without power plugged in.
it helped but the windows logo got freeze and after rebooting the laptop once again it has returned to the same black and blank position.
2. display check (long pressing D) is OK.
3. I've even ran the diagnostics check and it's OK as well.
can it be just a bios update issue?
please help me!

A:Black screen problem - new motherboard - Dell Vostro 3550

It's probably an Activation Problem. If it's a new Motherboard, it's new Hardware, even if it is the exact motherboard you replaced.

If you can pull up Task Manager from the black screen (If you have a mouse but nothing else) - Then you can stick your install disk into the Optical Drive and run Setup.exe- This will fix any activation problems. Run an In-Place Install which means just choose "Upgrade" from the choice of either upgrade or fresh install. I've had to do this twice.

Hi all,First post!  My Dad's Lenovo laptop goes to a black screen when starting up, so is unusable.I haven't seen it in the flesh yet but have started to research things for him and have found that 'black screen' shows up quite a lot for Windows 10 and Lenovo PCs! We were so impressed with my Dad's PC I've ended up with the same model myself:Lenovo YOGA 500 Convertible Laptop, Intel Core i7, 8GB RAM, 256GB SSD, 15.6" Touch Screen. Also labelled as: Yoga 500-15IBD Laptop (ideapad)  I see some people mentioning hardware failures and others device driver problems with the graphic card etc. but haven't read a definite cause/fix for this so far. I've just found this recent critical BIOS update for this PC which mentions the black screen problem:Software name: BDCN63WW Version 63[Important updates] Fix Win 10 lid close black screen issue.http://support.lenovo.com/gb/en/products/Laptops-and-netbooks/Yoga-Series/yoga-500-15ibd/downloads/D...I haven't seen this mentioned in the forums? Has anyone else used this?If the PC always boots to a black screen I'll obviously have trouble installing this! I'm hoping that it will boot in Safe Mode or I'm going to have some trouble installing it?! I don't know whether to install the BIOS update on my own machine which is running fine - I think I'll wait until I see my Dad's laptop first which will be in a few weeks. Has anyone had any experience of this BIOS update or other comments on this?Thanks. &nb... A:Yoga 500 'BLACK SCREEN' - BIOS update: "[Important updates] Fix Win 10 lid close black screen issue"

I'm still wondering about this... I've just updated the Lenovo Companion after seeing it mentioned in another thread. It looks like this s/w is supposed to scan the PC and recommend Lenovo updates - critical and nice to have ones. Initially the Companion was showing a critical update for Lenovo SHAREit and a recommended one for my BIOS. It says I'm currently on BDCN28WW and offered something like v61 and not the 63 I mentioned in my first post? After letting it update SHAREit and re-scanning the BIOS update is no longer being offered and still shows me on v28 ??? I'm not sure I trust this 'Companion' app!My laptop seems to be running fine so I don't want to break it updating the BIOS if it's not required. For all I know my Dad's broken one may be broken because it upgraded?! Does anyone else use/trust the Companion app?And has anyone else seen it change it's mind on recommended BIOS updates? Thanks.

I just bought this laptop for about 1 month, the laptop work fine before. But after...I don't know maybe after the windows update, the driver make the screen flickering and some dots appear on the screen, sometimes the screen lagging and went black. I'm pretty sure it's because of the driver because if I disable it, everything is fine, but that is just a temporary fix, every games is unplayable when I disable the driver. I tried to reinstall it using driver from Intel, Windows, Lenovo but none of them work(newest)

Hello!I recently ordered a new motherboard for my "Inspiron 7720 Special Edition" laptop because the old one failed. The laptop is out of warranty but I was told since I purchased the new motherboard that the new part (motherboard) has 2 years warranty. In the new motherboard the 1st graphics card (Intel HD4000) is causing display problems whereas the secondary one (Nvidia GT650M) is working flawlessly.I have included a screenshot of how the screen looks.I have tried the latest and older drivers and have also found out that there's a Kernel memory leak (via PoolMon).I am using W10 64bit and have the latest BIOS installed. The problem initiates when W10 is on the log on screen, just after the boot and loading.Screenshot of the problem:
I would like to thank you in advance!

My wife has a computer with an ASUS P5ND motherboard that's been failing to boot lately; I'm not sure what's causing it, but it may be a motherboard problem, so I'm posting here. Essentially, what happens is that the BIOS boots partially (including a successful sounding startup beep) and then the screen goes black. This had been occuring during the Windows boot process (I run Vista; the Windows logo would appear briefly, and then the screen would go blank and the booting process would hang), but now I'm getting a message saying that the BIOS post failed and then the screen goes black. I can then press delete to enter setup, but the screen blacks several seconds afterwards.

Admittedly, this may be a video card problem (feel free to move it if so), but my wife noticed no graphical artifacting or other signs of damage (other than a Skyrim crash to desktop, which is probably par for the course for the game). For what it's worth, she has a GeForce SLI setup of some kind (I'm not sure what, but if it would be helpful, I can check); I've tried reseating the cards and the bridge to no avail (though immediately after doing this, I *was* able to view the set-up screen successfully, without the screen going blank; further reboots led to the blanking set-up screen again).

Anyway, if anyone has any suggestions as to the nature of this problem before I take it in for repairs, I'd greatly appreciate them. I'm pretty mystified, and... Read more

It may very well be the motherboard or even the power supply... SLI setups require a lot of power

I'm getting the black screen with movable cursor or KSOD (Black Screen Of Death) on Windows Vista.

What happens:
The system powers on.
Start windows normally
Windows splash screen
-> Black screen <-

What I can do:
I CAN enter BIOS and have reset the default settings.
I CAN press F8 to give me advanced boot options, but all options have the same result, apart from "Repair your computer".
I CAN load the "Repair your computer" option.
I CAN move the mouse around the screen.
I CAN press shift 5 times to get a dialogue to appear, but no control panel.
I CAN press the power button to shut down the system.
I CAN start up in safe mode, which is exactly the same, but with lower resolution.

I CANNOT seem to do anything else.

However, there are workarounds to accessing the hard drive:

I CAN use MSDaRT or the System Recovery Tool.
I CAN use the hard drive as an external USB hard drive on another machine.

What I've tried:
Startup Repair - Could not detect a problem.
System Restore - No restore points.
Windows Complete PC Restore - A valid restore location could not be found.
Windows Memory Diagnostics - No errors.
SFC Scan - No problems.
Stand alone system sweeper - No problems.
Hotfix Uninstall - Nothing to uninstall.

I also COULD do a partial or full "Packard Bell Recovery", which is essentially like reinstalling windows. I DO NOT want to do this.

I'm sure this is just a simple software issue real... Read more

I think I saw this post aver at Toms but I also think you gave some additional info.
I think what may be going on it during the switch from the windows low res video driver to the driver used in normal mode.

Since you can get into safe mode try to go to device manager.
Start|right click computer|properties|device manager.
Look in the display adapter.
Is there a yellow exclamation mark there?
Or is it showing the video that you know should be there?
Please post the video that the machine uses and or the PB model.

Can you provide a few details [remember we can't see or touch your system] about the hardware and software?

I'm having a BIG problem with the computer screen. Pixels on my screen keep turning green & pink. It also keeps changing the screen resolution by itself. I tried installing the latest graphics driver from Compaq, unplugging my phone, neither worked. I've provided an image below:

Please, please, can you help me!

Hi everyone,

From last few weeks I'm having this strange and annoying blank screen of death. I could just see a blank screen (not a blue screen) while either waking up computer from sleep or while trying to turn on the display by moving cursor/typing something(waking up from power saver mode of display, I set display to be of after few minutes of inactivity). So essentially screen becomes total blank. Just once or twice I saw this BSOD "DRIVER POWER STATE FAILURE" but for all other times my screen is just blank. I could see the Hard Disk activity LED on during this blank screen. And almost after all subsequent boots, I could see "Windows has recovered from unexpected shutdown/serious error - Check for solution" message.

System - Windows 7 Pro x64 with all latest recommended and security updates
CPU - i7 2630QM
GPU - nVidia GT525M
MoBo - Factory default for Dell XPS L502X

First I suspected its because of my nVidia GT525M GPU drivers (I was using official latest drivers 320.49), so I completely uninstalled them with regular uninstall + DriverSweeper 2.1.0 from Guru3D.com. I did not install any nVidia/display drives since then. But just now I got another blank screen after it. Also I started connecting my PC to an old Sony Bravia TV with HDMI cable and that time the automatic installation of drivers failed. That is my second point of possible problem. I've been using CCleaner to clean the unwanted registry entries and revo uninstaller for almost every unin... Read more

The BSOD is caused by Intel(R) Centrino(R) Wireless-N 1030 driver.

Hey I need immediate help!

It's my sis' previously-formatted HP Pavilion dv5201tx! The problem is as the title above. I can go into safe mode. I've used system restore twice. And in Documents and Settings folder I noticed it has:

Administrator.computer description name
Administrator.computer description name.000

Is it creating more user folders? At some point Administrator.computer description name.000 wasn't there. Corrupted registry hive? I'm not sure! Restarted many times, used Last known good configuration, and it's still black after the boot screen. Please help quick, she uses it a lot. Thank anybody so much..

When I was playing a game the other day my DELL XPS 8500 froze turning the screen into green and yellow lines as well as freezing the sound into a continuous set of dissonant tomes. I turned the computer off using the power button. When restarting the computer wouldn't start properly.
On restart, the fan starts as usual and the computer appears to be starting normally for the first few seconds, then the HD lamp goes out and nothing more happens. The screen has power but is black all the time. Some USB slots seems to have stopped working while some still appears to work as lights go on on the items attached to them. The mouse seems to actually have been broke. Some lights on the mouse lights up but not the laser underneath. Testing the mouse in another computer gives the same result.
Opening the cover reveals an orange light lit up on the motherboard.
Any help in identifying the problem apreciated

A:XPS 8500 will not start, orange light on motherboard, will not boot, BIOS inaccessible, black screen

Orange LED on motherboard means absolutely nothing.  It only indicates that 5VSB power is available.
Green and Yellow Lines indicate GPU fan failure and overheat damage.
Disconnect the Data Line for the hard drive and turn on.
It should show failure at that point.
If it does not there are other problems.
