Yoga 2 Pro + Windows 10 = External Monitor not working via micro HDMI

Q: Yoga 2 Pro + Windows 10 = External Monitor not working via micro HDMI

I upgraded to Windows 10 last week and everything was smooth. Today when rebooting my system, the unit no longer can see my external display. I have tried multiple other displays and none seem to work. I have the latest video drivers for Win10 from the support site installed but it still doesn't work. Any thoughts?

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

I experienced the same - and also inconsistently that the system is going sluggish/lagging heavily. To fix problem with HDMI downgrade to drivers for Win8.1 - it works but hopefully Lenovo will fix this issue with Win10 drivers!? Overall upgrading to Win10 has been a bad experience (regarding the lagging of the system which usually occurs after 20-30 min after logging on). I've tried removing all third-party startup programs (including Lenovos) - but to no help. The frustration is increasing - any tips will be appreciated :-)

I purchased an external monitor on Friday.  It worked on Friday and Saturday. Sunday when I booted up, the external monitor no longer worked. The history appears to show an automatic update occurred overnight.  I was running Windows 8.1.  I upgraded to 10.  I have uninstalled and reinstalled the intel video driver, I reinstalled the chipset driver.  I have trimmed the micro HDMI cord as suggested in one of the posts.  I have seen enough posts on the various boards to know my issue does not seem to be an isolated case... but I haven't been able to find an explanation of the cause or a reliable solution.  Any help is appreciated.

Hello, I have a Yoga 2 13 laptop with Win 10 and wanted to use an external monitor. So I got a micro HDMI to HDMI cable and hooked it up to my monitor, but surprise, it does not work.I already tested the micro HDMI to HDMI cable and the monitor with my Sony A6000 camera,it worked fine, first time and every time.Already read the Yoga 2 Pro thread about cutting a bit of plastic off the micro HDMI cable, not neccessary, measuread the depth of the micro HDMI port on the laptop, 5.2 mm,and the length of the metal part of the micro HDMi cable, 5.5 mm. When I plug in,I can hear and feel the click-in-place of the cable in the port, it goes all the way, and thereis still a bit of room, 0.3mm, left on the outside, so definitely not a metal part length problem.Already tried un- and re-installing both the Lenovo and the Intel driver for the Intel VGAdisplay card, no fix.Basically it behaves like this, when I plug the cable, the monitor wakes up, but immediatelysays "Entering Power Save Mode" and goes back to sleep, like it recognizes a connectionbut there is no video signal coming. On the laptop there is no sign of a connection,in the Display settings, when I press Detect, I get "Didn't detect another display."Also tried changing the order of plugging the cable and powering up the monitor,no solution.Tried giggling a little bit the cable inside the port, nothing. What else can I try? What can I debug ?Anyone else is using this setup?, does ot have similar problems ?Thank you so much.

I have a Yoga 11s that started having hdmi connection issues about a year ago and has recently quit connecting to an external monitor via HDMI completely. We tried upgrading to Windows 10 to see if that would overwrite any software issues - no luck. The HDMI port actually appears loose. I did an extensive search of the forum and found posts that recommended cutting down the rubber around the base of the hdmi cord - tried that and at least I had a little activitiy - in the upper right hand corner of the external monitor up popped a box that says DVI then VGA then HDMI - but then says No Signal. Tried the graphics card update recommended on a post from long time ago and a popup indicated I had a newer version already installed. I have taken it to a laptop repair place - said they couldn't get parts from Lenovo. I found an "authorized" Lenovo repair shop locally - when I called they said they only work on business machines Called Lenovo and they told me to take it to Best Buy - however since I purchased this directly from Lenovo, Best Buy said they can't work on it. I would rather not send it into Lenovo because they tried to charge my hubby hundreds of dollars when his 15 day brand new laptop quit working, claiming damage - luckily extensive pictures taken and dated prior to sending it in thwarted that attempt at extortion. Does anyone have any suggestions? I need to be able to do presentations and work remotely with this so it is no... Read more

I have a Lenovo G50 running Win8 32bit. I have two external monitors both Asus with VGA ports. I successfully configured one of the monitors to the VGA port. However I have not been able to successfully get my 2nd external monitor connected using the HDMI port. I have a VGA to HDMI adapter for the monitor but it's not working. To rule out any issue with the 2nd monitor, I was able to get it to work by disconnecting the VGA cable from the first monitor and connecting it to the 2nd monitor. But again, no luck using the HDMI port with a VGA to HDMI adapter. So I'm fresh out of ideas. Had anyone been able to resolve this successfully with this setup? And if so, how? Thanks in advance! Leslie

I have a HP Spectre 13 Ultrabook (Model No. F5C93EA#ABU) originally shipped with Windows 8.1 64 bit.About 2 months ago it was updated to Windows 10 64-bit with no great problems (update in place).Recently I observed that the external HDMI port no longer works when trying to connect to a TV. I have since tested many combinations of external monitors and cables together with other laptops and proved the problem is with this laptop, We have updated windows 10 to the latest aniversary update to attempt to fix the problem and have also uninstalled and reinstalled the Intel Gaphics Driver which is currently at version 10.18.15.4248. This the latest driver is as posted at the HP website and tends to the be the version that is also automatically installed via windows update.  I notice that actual baseline release date of 10.18.15.4248 is August last year. Intel have many later non-OEM versions but this is the latest HP OEM version. I am at a loss on how to fix the problem and have had to resort to a plugabble USB3 to HDMI adapter to provide external monitor support.

I recently bought a new monitor (ASUS ve248h) to use as a dual monitor along side my own laptop however upon connecting the HDMI cable with the monitor it doesn't appear to work. I have tried updating the drivers and the hdmi port does work while I am connecting to my LG tv using the hdmi port. I have used various cables including the one that connects it to the tv however so far without success.

I am a bit clueless as to why it would work with the tv and not the monitor also my brothers laptop (which has Ubuntu) does successfully connect to the monitor.

Hello I have been fighting issues with my external monitor not turning back on after sleep. I have it set to hybrid mode, I understand the other fix is to set it to discrete mode but my other laptop of the same type does wake up after moving the mouse in hybrid mode. I tried multiple things. 1.) Updated Intel Management Drivers and Software 2.) Updated Thunderbolt Software 3.) Used Graphic Driver Uninstaller and to no avail.  I also installed every update for Windows 10 on their web site. The other fix is to enable and disable the NVIDIA driver in the and that wakes up the HDMI port it seems, but that should not be the case, I would like it to just turn on with the flick of the mouse or button like my other laptop. Is it a failing graphic card of Nvidia or Intels end? I do notice after the monitor sleeps the NVIDIA drivers control panel settings go missing. I already uninstalled completely and reinstalled the drivers but my computer is still having this problem. Are their any suggestions on Lenovo's end or fixes? I bought this laptop from Amazon and I also joined a 3 year support service from them.

Have you compared the Power Option settings on the two laptops to see if they match as well?Do the two systems share the same monitor, and if not, how is your monitor configured, does it have an option to set the input source to HDMI vs. automatically detecting the source? When in the mode where the screen does not turn back on, what happens if you press the following key combination Windows Key + Shift + Ctrl + B  (forces a reset of graphics cards) do you hear a beep and your screen wake up?     That key combination sometimes works to wake the monitors, and while not a solution, it may be a work around until you find a permanent one. Best of luck,

Ever since updating to Windows 10, my Yoga 2 Pro (model name 20266, Mfg Date 14/08/2014) is unable to connect to an external monitor. Tried a few TVs and a projector using the micro HDMI port. I've connected other computers to each of the monitors so I know they work. I understand how to use WIndows intimately (35 year old software engineer at Google, been using WIndows 20+ years), trust me, this is not a case of me forgetting to use Windows key + P or anything like that. The mirco HDMI port itself (physically) is fine and was working great until the day I downloaded Windows 10. So unless it happened to spontaneously stop working on the exact same day i upgraded to WIndows 10, it's not a hardware issue either. The issue is that the external monitor is simply not detected, no matter my attempts to play with the display options.I have also run the Intel driver update utilty, but it refuses to update the driver because it says it's detected manufacturer drivers and tells me I should get the manufacturer drivers. Ok, so I went to the Lenovo Yoga 2 support website, the latest driver they offer on that site is 10.18.15.4240. The driver update doesn'tmake a difference. Now, if you go to Device Manager > Display Adapters > Intel(R) HD Graphics Family, right click and selected "Update driver software..." it will download an even newer version (10.18.15.4279). This doesn't work either. I've search all around the web and cannot find a solution. I'm debating in... Read more

I have had my Yoga 2 Pro for about a week now. Slowly adapting to the ins and outs of the device. Just recently acquired a micro-HDMi to HDMi adapter to connect the Yoga 2 to my TV. Needless to say I was a bit dismayed when I noticed that the adapter worked, but only if I tugged on the connection (towards the front of the machine). When I let go, the screen would disconnect and I would have no picture. This angered me a bit. I read a bit about others having the same issues.I slept on the issue one night and then in the morning I decided to take matters into my own hands. Grabbed a nail file I had laying around and shaved off about a nail file's width off of the end of the micro-HDMi connector. I could barely see any difference in the cable connector. Then I tried plugging it in and voila. No issues whatsoever. Tried angling the connector towards the back, down, up, front. No interruptions...I know it is a bit frustrating, but I like the rubbery feel of the Yoga 2 body and was willing to do a bit of DIY to make this work. Took about 5 minutes in total. Now am happy again...Give this a try if you have a problem with the connection.Just thought I'd share... lootzius

I have looked through all the documentation from Lenovo and on these forums and have not been able to determine which version of the HDMI spec (1.4 or 2.0) the micro-HDMI port supports. Although this laptop has a 4K display, I wouldn't necessarily expect that the micro HDMI port to be 2.0 but it would make since and would be a smart thing to do.

Thanks,

Hi and welcome to the forum.

Have you made sure your graphics card driver is up to date?

Have you tried starting your PC up in safe mode and seeing if the problem still persists?

Please ensure you have done both of these and then post back; it would also be helpful if we knew your system specifications which you can fill in under 'User CP'.

Also does the task bar appear on the primary monitor or secondary monitor?

Hi all, I've just taken ownership of the ThinkPad Yoga 370 and suspect that the Micro SD slot is faulty.  Basically, the card gets sticker into the slot once pushed in and it'll take a long time to slowly pull out the card from the slot. Also, the notebook doesn't detect the card when it's in.  Im pretty sure I got the right side of the card into the slot.  Can anyone confirm if the slot is suppose to eject the card with a "spring" motion? I am having issues that are evidently common to the Yoga 720, namely that I cannot connect to an external monitor via a USB-C to HDMI. I have tried several suggestions to no avail (e.g., suggestions under the following topics):https://forums.lenovo.com/t5/Lenovo-Yoga-Series-Notebooks/Yoga-720-USB-C-to-HDMI-Not-Working/td-p/39...https://forums.lenovo.com/t5/Lenovo-Yoga-Series-Notebooks/Lenovo-Yoga-720-USB-C-to-HDMI/m-p/3877361#... Specifically, I have updated all drivers, tried both USB-C ports, and tried two different USB-C to HDMI adapters (TRENDnet and CableMatters USB-C to HDMI). I am using a usb-c to hdmi adapter to output to a TV but the black levels look washed out. I had no issues with the same TV and a previous laptop that had a dedicated hdmi port. In the intel graphics settings usually there is a "quantization range" setting to change color space between RGB Limited and RGB Full if the intel graphics is driving the hdmi port. However, in this case, there is no hdmi port but instead a usb-c to hdmi adapter, thus the quantization range setting is missing. I've had the same issue before on a previous laptop with usb-c. I've tried installing thel atest drivers, including the non-validated ones from the intel website, but none give me the quantization range setting.

My Thinkpad Yoga 15 has a problem, which may or may not be related to the BIOS update recently performed. When booting, the bootup screen only appears on an external monitor via the HDMI output. When performing the hardware tests in the BIOS, tests are done on the HDMI-connected display, the internal display does not seem to be recognized. I verified this using both Linux and Windows. It does not seem to be a hardware failure; I have been able to get the display on the internal LCD a few times, by powering down the laptop, holding the power button for about 20 seconds, then powering back on while pressing F1. The laptop will then function for a while, but loses its display after coming out of sleep. Needless to say, this is unworkable. Does anyone have any tips on how this could be fixed in a more permanent fashion or any indication to cause? BIOS does not allow me to turn off NVIDIA, or its opposite, to enable it exclusively. I also tried different drivers, from both Lenovo as well as NVIDIA and Intel, but to no avail. Any pointers appreciated.

Hello,

Yesterday my new laptop arrived, Windows 7 (64-Bit) pre-installed, I've downloaded all the updates; there are no other issues with this computer.

The only problem I'm having has to do with the external monitor; it's a IBM (6332) E74 monitor. Windows 7 detects and correctly names the external monitor E74, but the monitor just flashes no signal. I also located and downloaded the the IBM E74 drivers .zip file, but Windows 7 , says it is already using the latest drivers and ignores them.

Any suggestions would be great, thanks.

www.zdnet.com/product/dell-optiplex-9030/
According to this forum (but on the 9010) it is not possible:
"...I would like to inform you that both VGA and HDMI ports on the system are TV out connection... you won't be able to use this system as display only for a different system or laptop...."
en.community.dell.com/support-forums/desktop/f/3514/t/19508673
Is it that the 9010 does not have HDMI IN and the 9030 does have HDMI IN (and hence the 9030) does work as an external monitor?
Thank you in advance for your help!

A:Can I Use the OptiPlex 9030 as an (External) Monitor via HDMI IN?

The setup guide shows you have one 19-pin HDMI-input port (#11) on back of the monitor so you should be able to connect an external video source, assuming the source puts out a compatible HDMI signal.
You may need to use the On-Screen Display (OSD) buttons (#6) to configure the display to accept the signal from the HDMI-input. The setup guide doesn't list the OSD options so you may have to figure those out yourself. The OSD buttons are on the right edge of the screen just below the optical drive.

My just arrived XPS 15 9550 which I have updated to the currently newest drivers (BIOS, Chipset, Video, Audio) does not detect any external display via HDMI. It says no external display has been detected. My previous Dell notebook had no issues at all.
Any ideas what the problem might be and how to fix it?
Many thanks in advance!

Hello, when I connect my AOC F22 external monitor via HDMI to my Spectre, the computer nearly freezes and the monitor doesn't come on. Thoughts?  P.S. the monitor works fine on my other computers. Thanks.

I have an Aspire V17 and i connected an external monitor to it (via HDMI). The external display does show something, although the settings (duplicate or expand screen) are fine and the monitor works great if i connect it with the same cable to a different Laptop. Are there any drivers i need to download to the pretty new, WIN 10 operated Acer Aspire Laptop?

Oftenly, I was using my y700 with an external LG monitor conneted via HDMI cable. Sometimes the signal was lost for a few second when I accidentely touched or moved the cable, but I thought it was the cable's fault. The problem reappeared with an increasing frequency until yesterday when the signal was completely lost and I coulnd't bring it back. Today I managed to have an image for a few seconds until I adjusted the cable and it went blank again. So I tried a different HDMI cable, but it didn't helped. I also connected the monitor to my old PC and it was working fine with both cables. I tried to reinstall the Intel drivers, but it didn't helped. Both device menager and the Intel control panel are detecting the monitor and the monitor itself doesnt seem to be in the saving mode either, however, there is no image at all.Is the HDMI port broken then? The monitor and the cable are working fine with a different PC.
