T440p shuts down after closing the lid

Q: T440p shuts down after closing the lid

hi,I have a lenovo T440p laptop that i have been using for 6 months now. newly the laptop often and unexpectedly turns off rather then going into sleep mode after i close the lid. Also, sometimes, after i close the lid the display turns off and the laptop becomes irresponsive but do not enter sleep mode. the only way is to force reboot the laptop. i have installed all the required updates proposed by the thinkvantage utility but the problem is persisting.what could be the reason for this behaviour and how could it be solved?

Preferred Solution: T440p shuts down after closing the lid

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hello, I need some help!I just got a new T440p a couple months ago and I'm having trouble with the mouse.  The cursor will randomly jump to the top right corner of the screen and close programs.  It is a completely random problem; nothing ever seems to trigger it.  Yesterday I installed the newest Synaptics Pointing Device Driver and I still have the problem.  It even seemed to add a new problem where the cursor started flashing and the computer was beeping.  It wouldn't respond at all, even after me leaving it to sit and sort itself out and I eventually had to resort to shutting down with the power button and restarting.  That problem hasn't occured since, but the cursor jump to close programs continues to be a problem.I'm running Windows 7 Professional, 64-bit. Any suggestions??

A:T440p mouse erratic and closing programs

Did you find a solution to this? I have the same issue and need a solution! Are you also left-handed? I think it may be with the hand hitting the pad causing it to jump in the opposite corer. For right-handed people, this would be annoying but not cause as much havoc closing programs with no X in the top left corner. Never have had the issue with a wireless mouse when my hand is nowhere near the pad.

Let me start out by saysing that this is my second time making this thread. The first time the laptop overheated and shut down before I finished. Yes, its that bad. So, my t440p with a core i7 4600m and a GT 730m graphics card has been overheating constantly. I can't even browse the web without it shutting down. Temps on both the cpu and graphics chip reach 90 degrees celsius or more frequently. Any suggestions on whats wrong with the laptop?

Sometimes when I go to close a website page I've been on, it freezes and then will say "website not responding" next to Windows IE at the top. Then if I click it to close it again it closes ALL of my open sites and shuts down IE and I have to start over and get back online. It seems to be doing this more and more often.
I am using IE 8.0 with Aol (9.0?)
Win XP Prof. SP3
AMD Athlon 64
What's the problem and how do I fix this?

A:Closing a website shuts down IE 8

It seems that your IE is freezing. This may be because of many reasons. You should start with running IE8 without any add-ons. Right click on the IE shortcut on your desktop and select Start without Add-ons. Check if your IE still freezes.

If you have it set to do nothing in battery and plugged modes, then it should do nothing except blank the screen.

HI, I noticed this problem which seems like 3 weeks ago or so. I am running Windows 10 64 bit on my T450s, and when I start to close the screen, the screen will go black. The red light on the back will remain on, but as soon as I fully open the screen again, the computer will be completely turned off. My options are set to put the computer in sleep mode when the lid is closed, but this can happen when tilting just a few degrees. I am on BIOS version 1.22.  Any help would be appreciated.

I used to be able to close my lid on my laptop and it would go to sleep, then when I returned to use it I opened my lid and it would resume where I left off. (HP Pavilion, running VISTA).

Now when I close lid, it does abnormal shutdown of any open applications and Windows. Upon power up, a text screen advises of abnormal shutdown and prompts to start in safe mode or start normally. Not sure why this changed.
I have confirmed under CONTROL PANEL, POWER OPTIONS, SYSTEM SETTINGS that it is set to SLEEP when lid is closed. (both for A/C or battery). Any other suggestions????

Dell E6500 - few years old.  Now shuts down after closing the lid after several hours - at least when left closed over night - even when on AC power.
This behavior is new as for the longest time it would simply go to sleep as desired.
The close lid behavior is still set to sleep.    It must power down hard because when I lift the lid in the morning, Windows 7 wants to recover from unexpected shutdown.
Again, this happens after the lid is closed for some time while on AC power.   Frustrating as it is used to sleep and would wake up when I needed it to.

Please visit www.support.dell.com and download and install the latest video drivers and BIOS for your system from the Drivers and Downloads page. You must select the correct version of Operating System and then update relevant drivers.
Alternately, you can also click on the link mentioned below for the Drivers & Downloads Home page  :
Please ensure you do not have any external devices like a Printer, external hard drive, etc. connected to the system when updating BIOS. Also, please remove any dvd disks which may be in the DVD Drive prior to the BIOS update. The AC Adapter must be connected to the system during the update.
Hope this helps resolve the issue for you.

First of all, I'm Dutch and so is my Windows, so if some terms aren't quite as they should in English, I apologize and hope you still understand.

I recently reinstalled Windows 8 completely because I bought an SSD for in my laptop. I exported my power plans I used before the reset (when Windows was still on the HDD) and imported them again after the reset. In every power plan, Windows should go to sleep mode when closing the laptop lid, but that's not what's happening. Instead, Windows shuts down entirely, but the power light on my laptop indicates it's in sleep mode (flashing slowly). I also tried the built-in power plans (after just adjusting the appropriate setting), but the same happens. When i change the setting to do nothing (instead of going to sleep mode), it acts like it should: it does nothing.

Check your Power Settings for what happens when you close the lid. Usually the laptop sleeps, hibernates or shuts down when the lid is closed. No signal is sent to monitors when that happens.

Hello everyone, I'm having the issue noted above. BSODs attribute the crash to either one of two files: cdd.dll (most commonly) and win32k.sys (only once). Screen turns jagged, goes black and then BSOD but only occasionally. I've had this crashes happen to me only 4 times in a whole week already. World of Warcraft crashes were all succesive, but after updating Catalyst drivers it never happened again. PC was crash-free for 3 or 4 days (thought it may have solved the issue and I could stop worrying about faulty hardware components) but yesterday night closing Chrome it happened again. I turned off Aero desktop after that, just in case.

The problem is I can't find any Memory dump or minidump for those BSODs even though settings are on for that (maybe MEMORY.DMP is too large? I have 15 free Gb out of 320 on my boot drive. I changed it to minidumps just in case. Oh, also, it was already set to overwrite so no idea what's going on). Could not find them manually nor could SF Diagnostics tools which I just ran.

My rig is new, only about 3 months old and no hardware changes since. The only components coming from my older PC are the boot HDD and graphics card. The only thing that's happened is 3 or 4 power outages in December but BSODs started only last week. If any hardware components are malfunctioning they are luckily under warranty but I need to determine if that's the case.

Only other strange thing is that, when gathering my rig's data for this post, Everest shows my Motherboa... Read more

A:BSOD when resizing/closing World of Warcraft, also when closing Chrome

Hi Haxiel.

The zip you uploaded does not contain any crash dump.

Follow it: Dump Files - Configure Windows to Create on BSOD
Go to Option Two, Point 2. Download the .reg file and merge it in registry by double clicking it.

Now wait for another BSOD. When it occurred, search the .dmp files manually in the default path: C:\Windows\Minidump or %SystemRoot%\Minidump. See if the crash dump is recorded or not (hopefully it will be recorded).Post it following the Blue Screen of Death (BSOD) Posting Instructions.

Dont run any disc cleanup tool before you upload another zip.

A:Slow browser, IE closing, Outlook and Yahoo closing

Hi Elise,
thank you. I ended up getting rid of PC Tools Internet Security and switching to AVG Basic Free. I think most of the major problems went away.
Yahoo has stayed up, Outlook has stayed up, browser seems to work quickly, facebook didn't have floating text and pictures anymore, was able to do some posting, sent some large emails. But, and not exactly sure, IE has frozen up, but not as often. The dds program you had me run this morning froze and I had to do a hard shut off, task mgr didn't respond and the weirdest thing of all, the clock stopped. Can't say I have ever seen that. So I am not sure what exactly is going on, if it really is malware or some setting is messed up. I wasn't able to run video on a site last night. Major improvement since I got rid of PC tools, but not quite right. Sorry, nontechie.

About 2 weeks ago it was apparent that laptop #1 was infected with antispyware XP 2009. My husband tried to solve it himself without waiting for me, I'm the problem solver in the house. Anyway, he purchased Shield Dekuxe which didn't seem to work. He downloaded the trial version of StopZilla which found bad things and quarentined them. Things were working fine.

Today things are not working again. I can open IE and it will bring up the home page (google.com) but anything typed in the search box or clicked on from the drop down list of frequently visited sites just closes IE. I also cannot search. The window will open, but clicking on anything (files/folders, documents, etc) immediately closes the window. I also cannot find Windows Explorer.

Shield Deluxe is currently installed, StopZilla is uninstalled. We have Zone Alarm installed, possibly. I was doing online chat with Shield Deluxe to get it to work (the internet aspect) and they said to uninstall ZA as it would interfere with SD. I removed ZA using add/remove programs from the control panel, yet when I restarted the computer ZA started up. It is no longer listed in the add/remove programs list. However viewing All Programs from the start menu shows a folder for Zone Labs. Since I can't find Windows Explorer and I can't search I can't find the folder to delete its contents.

Laptop #1 is a Compaq Presario running Windows XP and currently cannot use the internet due to the above problem.

Obvious to anyone. You have three malware apps running live at the same time. You have Avast, Kaspersky, and AVG.

You need to remove them all and install Microsoft Security Essentials AT LEAST TO TEST.

If you continue to crash even after removing them upload the DMP file as you have old drivers that need updating.

Before I buy and install an M.2 card, I wanted to ask just what do I need to know or do before and after the installation. The installation itself is basically simple but I'm not real sure how to set it up or what it can be used for? Do I really need it? I've read several articles about this and found more confusion. Some claim to use it as a boot drive for storing Windows, while others claim it is only good for existing drive cache. I'm wondering if adding the M.2 will even be of any use or improvement to me. Does anyone know anything about this? Please keep it like me, very simple. I'm not even sure which one to get for my T440p. Hi,I recently purchased a used T440p, more specifically a model 20AW-S0RK03. Unfortuntatly it arrived damaged and, naive as I was, I accepted a small partial refund and figured it wouldn't be too much on an issue to replace it...However, it seems that this part is rather difficult to obtain and furthermore I now realize that the palmrest for the T440p exists with several different internal designs (number/placement of screw holes etc.).If possible I would much prefer not having to disassemble it twice - once to figure out the part number and once again when the part arrives - so if anyone can inform me what part number I need for my specific model (20AW-S0RK03), then that would be a huge help.Any tips on where to buy (if allowed) will also be greatly appreciated. Note that I'm a student, so both cost and delivery time (I'm in Europe) needs to be considered. Thanks in advance. I really hope that someone can assist me with this tiresome situation.Rasmus

Hi, Looking to replace the (broken) screen in my T440p (20AWS0DS08) with a FHD panel. I've read positive things about the AUO B140HAN01.2 but it seems this is now discontinued.  Just wondering if anyone has any experience with the newer B140HAN02.4 ?.  Comparing them side by side on panelook.com it seems the 01.2 has better color gamut,  response time and brightness, despite being an older model. Another panel I'm considering is the LP140WF1-SPK1.  Any thoughts or info much appreciated.

T440p keeps shutting off. Particularly when I start a game. No battery. What I've tried so far:Replace fan/heat sink.Replace i5-4210 with i7-4700mq.Thermal gel properly done.Tried four different brands of RAM.Swapped HDD.Installed MS Office 2013, and .NET framework 4.5 Both run without a hitch. Installed The Sims2, and it kicks off on launch. Same thing with Mass Effect 2. Still kicks off. It will run all day surfing the internet, running office, etc. Any suggestions?

sounds like overheating.  Can you install something to monitor temperatures, like TPFanControl?
Also, it works differently with no battery.  You should get one.
Do you have discrete or integrated graphics?  What is the rating of your power supply?

Hi, i have recently got a t440p and i have ran into a power throttling issue, this only happens when GPU is loaded the HD4600 and the cpu is utilized a bit, i have even undervolted but it seems to power throttle, is there any way to raise the tdp limit to 47 instead of 37 without flashing the bios? i have tried throttlestop's "Disable and Lock Turbo power limits" but it doesn't work.also my temperatures are not a problem and are quite far away from throttling temp.

Just gifted this computer:
Thinkpad T440p 20AN  00DEUS
S/N PC-*****
Only thing that Lenovo would give me was vague configuration on the 20AN. Was hoping someone could direct me to something more specific.
Also, will the WiFi card from a T400/420 work in the t440p?

Hello, I have a T440p. It has an SSD drive that it came with originally. Now I wish to secure erase it. I've tried with the ThinkPad Drive Erase Utility but when I try to boot with it I only get the following error message:ERROR: This utility works for Disk Encryption Drive or Solid State Drive only. I've confirmed that the SSD functions normally, so it's odd that the erase utility won't recognize it. The web page for the utility specifically says it supports T440p. I've also tried with Parted Magic, but it only says that the drive is "unsupported". Does anyone have any advise on what to do here?

Where can I read or compare motherboards Laptop t440p?namely 00HM985 00HM983 00HM981what differences they had, and where I can order their own, I had 00HM983, or want the same or better, but want to order directly rather than through managers or shops to avoid cheating in price

A:Motherboards for t440p

I don't have any direct experience with this but using your FRU numbers and The Google to cross to the 04X numbers listed here:  https://download.lenovo.com/parts/ThinkPad/t440p_fru_list_20140217.pdf
It looks like the differences are license (8 STD or PRO), AMT, and TPM.

I followed the directions to post my log files correctly, I'm hoping someone can analyze this soon? Thank you so much in advanced for your help! Bryan===========Hello While we understand your frustration at having to wait, please note that Bleeping Computer deals with several hundred requests for assistance such as yours on a daily basis. As a result, our backlog is quite large as are other comparable sites that help others with malware issues. Although our HJT Team members work on hundreds of requests each day, they are all volunteers who work logs when they can and are able to do so. No one is paid by Bleeping Computer for their assistance to our members.Further, our malware removal staff is comprised of team members with various levels of skill and expertise to deal with thousands of malware variants, some more complex than others. Although we try to take DDS/HJT logs in order (starting with the oldest), it is often the skill level of the particular helper and sometimes the operating system that dictates which logs get selected first. Some infections are more complicated than others and require a higher skill level to remove. Without that skill level attempted removal could result in disastrous results. In other instances, the helper may not be familiar with the operating system that you are using, since they use another. In either case, neither of us want someone to assist you who is not familiar with your issue and attempt to fix it.We ask that once you have posted... Read more

It all started when i opened some foreign file and it mustve been a virus or something. That triggered my computer to make these weird whirring clicky noises. Then my computer shut down. That day, i tryied to turn it on, it worked. However, the monitor didnt display anything. The computer was running but something to do with the bios just wasn't working.
Later on, my father fixed it.
However. NOW, the computer randomly shuts off by itself.
I'd start the computer on, and usually, the computer would start to make these noises similar to that of a computer reading a disc.
after the noises, the computer shuts off, and restarts by itself.
Anyone have any ideas?

Hi, I have a T440p thinkpad with a docking station. I am able to display 2 monitors fine (HP L2245wg). I have recently acquired a 3rd monitor (Dell P2214H) and would like to set it up. I have the DVI and VGA in the HP monitors and an SD port cable in the new monitor. However, when all 3 are plugged in, the DVI HP monitor fails to display anything. I went into the display settings on my laptop and it is reading the monitor is connected but not displaying anything. Am I missing a driver? Or are these monitors/laptops just not capable of displaying 3 monitors? If you could let me know I would very much appreciate it. Thanks
