Q: Laptop generally unstable--browsers slow, freeze; high disk usage

Hello,
First post. I found a post that had similar problems to my own but it was very old. I did notice the poster was asked to download "mini tool box" and check four lists--I did this and will include with post. The Problem computer is HP Pavillion g6. Thank you,

Preferred Solution: Laptop generally unstable--browsers slow, freeze; high disk usage

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

My laptop is running slow. everything in task manager i.e. ram usage, processor usage are fine. but the hard disk usage i think is very high. Please look for attached pic.

Is it problem with hardware or any software related?

plz help me. should i change my hard disk.

A:Very high disk usage keeps laptop slow in normal operations also.

Look at the Task Manager Resource Monitor to see if you can tell what Processes are causing high disk activity.
Resource Monitor is a button the the Task Manager / Performance tab.

Here's an example of the window I'm talking about:

I seem to have a host of problems with my Windows 10 PC lately. Perhaps this isnt the right forum to get help with this so apologies if i've posted it in the wrong place.

A) he system shuts down for no apparant reason in the middle of using it, without any notification. This happens at least once a month.

Looking at the event veiwer, i have saved the details but here are some of the initial commands that keep coming up.

User Logoff Notification for Customer Experience Improvement Program 7002

DHCPv4 client received shutdown notification 50104

there are also some error logs in there too - unfortunately i don't understand it too well.

Alongside this is the issue that i have with 100% disk usage a lot, which carries on for a while after startup.

In general my system seems slow, programs hang and perhaps these aren't issues that i can fix via this forum.

Thought it was worth a try though. Failing that i might need a new one!

Cheers.

as subject states l get random high cpu usage while idle... the moment l move the mouse and start using the system things seem to go back to normal.. the only reason its noticeable is because my temps rise between 5 and 10C higher...

originally l thought it was down to indexing however since its disabled now it cant be the issue.. however one thing l have noticed is the issue only tends to appear after a reboot when windows update has been run and l install new updates as lm unable to check to see what process is causing it... reason being that leaving my system idle with the performance monitor running seems to not constitute as idle hence lm unable to determine the problem process so l can only assume its down to windows update since it only generally happens one reboot after installing updates (after a couple of reboots, touch wood things seem to be ok)

A:High cpu usage only while idle [generally after windows updates]

There is CPU usage because your computer is not idle.
It is doing work while you are not using the computer.

...Why is that a problem? Do you want it to do it while you are working or playing a game?

My computer is a Vista Home Premium from 2007 with service pack 2 and the latest java. It consistently has this "not responding" problem. This happens on all the programs I'm running, including the notepad, Microsoft Word, Internet Explorer, individual web pages, things in the computer like the system tray...it affects everything with a window. It will say at the top of the window the name of the program, and in parentheses, it will say (Not Responding). I'm getting warnings from Norton that say High Disk Usage from one thing or another. I looked at the Windows Task Manager and it said iexplore.exe was running and it also had several entries.

Sometimes I don't get the (Not Responding), IE will just slow down and go white and it can take up to 5 minutes for it to pull up a web page or respond. I've run the latest Malwarbyte's Antimalware, I've run CCCleaner, I've removed a number of unnecessary programs (although I have plenty of space on the hard drive), I've set a number of programs for delayed startup (and my computer does start up very quickly now).

The fan is running a lot sometimes. I can't really clean it out myself because it is a laptop. I do use compressed air in the vents. Is there an inexpensive way to clean it out, since I can't afford to pay someone to take it apart and clean it? I suspect this is part of the problem, but would dust be causing this much slowdown?

A:Slow /Not Responding/ High Disk Usage

Can you check safemode if it stops to a halt also? What laptop model is it? Regarding your current Norton antivirus, what software package is it? Another thing to try is to start a Vista clean boot http://support.microsoft.com/kb/331796 . By enabling half then one item on every reboot would see if any of the item is the culprit.

Hello & hope you might be able to help.

I have been trying to figure out what is causing the notebook to several slow down with very slow response to keyboard/mouse or any tasks.  I have a Lenovo Y550 notebook and have been trying to determine if this is a virus or software conflict for several months.

After using multiple tabs in Firefox or Chrome (ebay, photo's, lots of searches & facebook games), the system will start to slow down, cpu usage then goes to 80-85%, disk activity is completely solid in the Resource Monitor & the fan will run - usually until I shutdown the computer.
I have read many of your tutorials & removed software, changed anti-virus packages, ran checkdisk, and updated video drivers.
Running CCleaner about 4-5 times a day.
Malwarebytes, Avast & Defender have not found any problems at all - this is somewhat of a concern also.
Receiving no errors at all.
Even upgraded internet to Uverse 18Mbps - which has not helped.

I am not very technical - enough to be dangerous.  I have spent sooo much time trying to figure this out and realized I need help.   Thanks so much in advance !! :-)

Just curious, why did you Disable your Windows Defender? MBAM and SAS are not Anti-Virus apps. Do you have another Anti Virus app. on your system that does not show up on your PC details?

Hi guys,

I recently used your Malware Removal section of the forums to clean off a friend's laptop from a few issues. I've found that even after cleaning the system completely, getting startup entries culled, and uninstalling some bloatware, the system is still running very sluggish. The task manager is showing a constant 100% disk usage and the main culprit seems to be "System." She does have indexing turned on, but I wouldn't think that would cause it to be running 100% disk usage even at idle.

I have done a disk defrag using Defraggler, but it wasn't too fragmented to start with, so not much changed after that operation.

Any suggestions on getting this under control? I feel like the disk usage is the main cause to the laptop running slowly.

Thanks!
Edit: I've attached a screenshot for y'all to see.

my pc is so slow in internet browsing and gaming because of high disk usage.

i tried everything disabling show me tips about windows and superfetch, changing virtual memory, scanning for virus.

and then i found out page file caused the high disk usage so i disable it, then my pc became so fast and no high disk usage but i keep getting low memory error and crashes even though i'm only using 60%-70% of my ram.

so i checked resource monitor and found out more than half of my ram goes to standby and only 1 mb in free

so is there anyway to disable standby memory?

specs:
cpu: i5 4440
ram: 8gb 1600 ddr3
gpu: gtx 950 2gb

A:page file causes high disk usage and making my pc slow

I would let windows manage your physical memory and page file it's very good at that and put the page file back it can be important for physical memory allocation sometimes .

Windows 10 page file to ram compression allocated size is insignificant anyway .

You didn't mention if all this web browser drama was during multitasking ,what browser and how many tabs open or what other conditions are present like GTA 5 which can use up a decent Core X or AMD FX CPU on high settings ? all these variables can even stall (nearly so ) my Haswell core i5 @ 8 GB ram on an SDD if taken to an extreme .

OTOH an SSD with a windows boot drive would be a stonking good upgrade on a core i3,i5,i7 ,AMD FX or any PC (even on an old PC with only 300 GB/s SATA II maximums and move things along considerably faster with less stalling and hanging , rember also that SSD will speed up any data written to or cached to the SDD or fetched off a metal HDD like this Haswell Core i5 Sata III 6GB/s dual boot PC in my specs ,yours is ofc SATA III 6 GB/s potential also but not anthing close to half of that on metal here is my SDD I/O :

For the past few months i have noticed that my Vista HP Pavilion dvd6565us has been running really slow.  Typically to open an internet browser it takes a minute and then everything seems to happen in slow motion once it gets online.  Also the fan always seems to be running and the bottom of the laptop gets really hot.  Finally I have the free comcast version of Norton 365 and it is always telling me that I have high disk usage host process for windows services. Anyone know if there is something wrong with the computer.  I have run Comodo Dragon, Norton Anti Virus and Malware bytes with nothing being detected.  Also when I run a full scan on Comodo or Norton it can take over 24 hrs to run a full scan.
Thanks!

Hi,
It wasn't too long ago that I had a problem with my computer(hp 2000 notebook) making a grinding noise where the fan was and I had taken it upon my self to "fix" the issue of a wire poking into the fan area by taking it apart. I had put everything back together just the way it was but, after I had turned the computer back on after that, it was taking a long time to load up my applications and such. It was started to irritate me so much, I factory reset my computer twice, only saving a handful of my original programs. The factory resets did not help, and Norton reinstalled and continued telling me I had high disk usage and I'm just like "from what!?". So Iv'e tried pushing through these slower speeds but I find chrome freezing and my applications slowing down on me and it's the worst my laptop has been. My laptop is so far from being the best but, before it was an okay deal for just browsing or using animation software. I uninstalled Norton because I've read it's slows your pc's performance but, that has not even effected my computer a bit since it was uninstalled. I looked online for other solutions like checking task manager for suspicious disk usage but there's nothing there that looks threatening and I even stopped that superfetch thing but nothing happened either. When I gotten this pc like 3 or so years ago, it was nothing like it was now with the default programs and settings.

I provided some pc info and what would happen during a startup... Read more

A:High disk and memory usage slowing my laptop.

the taskmanager showing running software doesnt help very much at the top you can click on disk or cpu to sort the list if the disk is 100% click the disk so we can see whats taking all the usage.
The other thing is your running a 64 bit o/s with only 2 gig of ram to make use of a 64 bit you want 4 gig or more so a memory upgrade is the best option.
Are you running win8 or 8.1? Your best move is to do the free upgrade form 8.1 to win10 as its min memory for a 64 bit system is 2 gig so it will work a lot better for you

System has over the last several months continued to slow down.  IE after booting up will sometimes open, but will quickly hang with not responding message or restarting message.  When this occurs, the system slows to the point that no other programs will be usable.  if I wait long enough, it appears to have short restarts, but eventually I need to reboot.  Sometimes it is so bad need to do the "power button" reboot.

Downloaded Firefox to see if that helps, but same issue.  Reset IE to default and that appeared to help for a short period.(minutes, not days).

I note that the HD light flashes almost solid during the hang periods.  It seems like something is thrashing.  I check the disk and it does not appear to be fragmented.

When I run in safe mode, which I needed to do to get this post sent, everything appears to run normally.

Below is the output from FRST program.

Hi,
My laptop(Win7) takes a long time to bootup. First it takes me to the windows logo screen and then it goes to a black screen and stays there for atleast two minutes before it gives me the login screen and then it takes another two minutes or so to before the desktop is loaded up. Also when I scan the computer with bitdefender for viruses, it takes around a day to do a full system scan and did not find any viruses. I have downloaded iobit driver updater and updated all the drivers, but that did not fix the problem. I have also installed iobit malware fighter and malwarebytes anti-malware and both scan came back negetive, The iobit performance monitor shows that the ram useage is 61% or higher all the time.

Any suggestions to fix this would be greatly appreciated

Thanks

I'm posting for a computer that is not my own, so details of history are not always known. (This is my daughter's pc). I believe this may be a laptop we replaced a cracked screen on, but that should not be causing the problems it's having - as the problems cropped up weeks or months later...but I wanted to mention that on the off chance that it is still somehow the culprit.

The computer is an HP, says Altec, G62, AMD Turion II P540 Dual Core Processor, 3.00 GB of which, 162GB is free at the moment. Runs Windows 7.

This laptop shut down unexpectedly QUITE awhile ago (more than a year ago possibly two) and we weren't able to get it running again. It gave one CMOS Checksum error when we tried to revive it - The note I have here says 'invalid, CMOS reset 502', if that means anything to you. Then it went to a black screen but the mouse was visible - and after shut down a second time nothing came up and the pc would not boot up at all. This laptop was set aside and because of it's age we simply got my daughter a new one instead of paying tech people to look at it, since they couldn't guarantee they could fix it anyway.

However - I came upon this laptop in the moving box and being the hopeful type, I plugged it in one last time after pulling out the battery and holding down the power button. We'd already tried that trick a few dozen times so I've no clue why this computer is finally working now. I'd like to get it fully fu... Read more

Hi, this if my first post, so please forgive me if I leave out any important details. I just came across this site after trying to figure out what was wrong with my girlfriend's computer. It's a Dell Inspiron 1521 running on Vista, and she has had it for about a year and a half now. However, soon after she got it, she has had trouble with it being extremely slow on startup and while running normally. CPU usage when doing absolutely nothing can range anywhere from 10-35%, and when actually doing stuff, it'll hit 100%. Currntly, physical memory is 1917 MB total, 1326 MB cached, and 12 MB free. There are currently 60 processes running for all users, which strikes me as a bit high.

I read some forums a few months ago and thought that perhaps the McAfee that came pre-installed was the problem, so I uninstalled that an installed AVG Free edition instead - which I think helped slightly, but it still feels extremely slow. I downloaded HiJackThis tonight and gave it a run after reading about it on some other sites, and so I'm attaching the log. I know there are some worms/Trojans among these, but I'm not sure exactly which ones I should remove and how I should go about removing it. I read the guide for HiJackThis, and it said to post on one of these forums if I had no clue I was doing, so here I am.

If there's any other information I can provide that would be helpful, please let me know, and thanks for your help in advance.

So I have a HP G71 laptop running of Windows 7 with Intel Celeron. It has been getting slower over the last several month and is often running at a ridiculously high CPU usage rate. I have Norton running and ever time I do a full scan it finds nothing which seems unusual, since it is running so slow and also does strange glitchy things.
I'll be quite honest, I am not very computer savvy and I have been trying to figure out how to fix this for a while now with no luck. If anyone has any ideas of what to do, I would be extremely grateful!

Please help - I feel like I'm going in circles, and I will appreciate all help given.

About 3 months ago, I had a problem with Arcade Yum creating crazy popups, and I came here and someone helped me get rid of it.  In that process, he told me to download Avast, so I did.  It was downloaded for a trial period which just ran out in this last week.

About 3 weeks or a month ago, my laptop started slowing down, freezing and just generally being a pain where I couldn't navigate AT ALL!  It is constant and the fan in this laptop is constantly running.  I don't know much about all this stuff, but it feels like there are a whole set of other programs running in the background that my laptop can't keep up with.

I asked for help again, and this is the thread:      http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/t/550162/ugh-im-still-infected-i-need-help-again/page-2

The last entry from Broni tells me to do the DDS Logs and post a new topic here.  As soon as I started those steps, I got an error message telling me:  Your Current Security Settings Do Not Allow This File To Be Downloaded

It hit me that maybe it's this Avast thing I downloaded awhile back.  I tried to uninstall, but it doesn't show up on my list of installed programs.  I googled it and tried to do the AvastClear removal tool, but I got the same message as above:  Your Current Security Settings ...Blah Blah... A:Is Avast Making My Computer Slow, Freeze Up & Generally Be A Pain?!

Today, I've been getting messages constantly (even though I'm not doing anything and certainly not downloading anything) that say: Your Current Security Settings Do Not Allow This File To Be Downloaded   The message will just randomly pop up on the screen when I'm not even at the laptop!  There were two specific times when it popped up that I was doing something ... at one point, I tried to log on to Facebook, and it gave me that message.  Another time, I tried to open a picture in an email, and that message came up.

Not only has that been going on all day, but Avast has decided to go crazy ... during this last hour, it has given me no less than 10 popup warnings that certain websites are threats.  This was all going on while we were eating dinner - no one was at the computer navigating.  It was almost like someone somewhere was using my computer, and I couldn't see it, but I could see the warnings that Avast was giving me about the websites they were going to.

I did an MBAM scan again today and here is the log:

My daughters Asus k55n laptop (AMD a8-4500m 1.9 GHz 4GB memory 500GB hard drive, was win 8 then win 8.1 and now win 10, Kaspersky internet security) took sooo long to boot up. She has STEAM with saved games and photo's that she doesn't want me to delete. I started uninstalling a bunch of misc. programs that are not necessary at this time, just to clean things up a bit. Things DID run better, but still not acceptable.. I ran a Kaspersky scan and found nothing. I checked and ran a defrag (it didn't appear to need it, as it was only 3% fragmented), I downloaded a fresh version of Malwarebytes and updated, then ran. Monitoring the scan, noticed the time was ticking away but the files stopped counting up. I just let it do its thing and 20 minutes later, was at the same file and the file counter was the same. I tried to open a browser and it took a few minutes to open. Appears to have partitioned hard drive. (C:)141 GB used out of 207GB,  (D:) 126mb used out of 258 GB... I don't know why this would need a partition of almost half of the HD. Noticed in TASK MANAGER the CPU and the MEMORY were spiking very high at times. I'm thinking possible virus or some other "evil" lurking in this computer.... Would appreciate any help. Thanks

A:Slow laptop. noticed high CPU and memory usage

ALSO,   Assuming it's a good idea,  how would I get rid of the virtually unused (D:) drive or just make it a fraction of the present size since it appears to be wasted HD space and possible causing excessive "file swapping" in the (C:) drive ?

Good evening to you !

I am currently using an Asus Laptop X7BS (which is almost 4 years old, and is a "beta" version of the N-serie), running Windows 7, and having a couple of problems, meaning:
- images take a while to load on Opera (which may seem anecdotical, but quite often, they take a while (up to 30 seconds), or don't even load at all, without nonetheless displaying the typical "image link broken")
- all in all, he is getting slow. Slow in the sense I have framerate drops when starting Opera, not to mention games (like League of Legend, which does not ask for too high performance)
- of the four displayed processor kernels, the first tends to be at maximum even when the computer is idle ("idle" in the sense I'm not doing anything on it)
- it is thus running hot almost permanently (~70° according to SpeedFan)
Then, I got a message this afternoon from my antivirus, which is Avira Free version, saying that it has detected "ADWARE/iBryte.bxoq" right here:
C:\Windows\TEMP\tmp00004090\tmp0000001f
And not just once, but a forty-ish times.

Thus, right now, I am thinking about reinstalling my Windows 7 from scratch. However, I am wondering if there is a way to avoid doing so - as some programs are a real pain to reinstall (I am looking at you, Office 2010, PTC Creo, LabView).

Could some spare some time helping me ?

Thank you a lot,

Have a good night,
Icomenid

Hi there, in the past week, I've started to notice my laptop behave more sluggishly and become quite slow when it would have otherwise handled the amount of applications open etc without any problems.

Scans with antiviruses over the past few weeks have flagged up removed so called viruses/ trojans , so I'm not sure whether this may have lead to my laptop suddenly becoming quite slow?

Please help :) Below is the DDS scan result and attached are the other logs requested.

Starting a week ago, my desktop has started to freeze or lockup randomly. I can not do anything as audio cuts and keyboard/mouse does not work until I manually restart the PC. The times in which the freezes happen are completely random. One day it'll take approximately 54 minutes before it happens, the next time will be hours.

I thought it might be a hardware issue regarding heat from research and experience. All the fans are working correctly. CPU, GPU, and PSU are not hot to the touch and temp readings are in the normal ranges from what I have looked up.

I don't have any specific programs open when the freeze occurs nor is my CPU or RAM usage above 50%.
I have reinstalled recent windows and driver updates, cleared out any new programs/files I have installed in the past month as well as using various anti-virus software programs.

Currently, I have not had a freeze in the past 24 hrs, however, my RAM usage is now at a constant 25%-35% with only Chrome open (this has never been like this). Even after reboots my RAM spikes to the same range while my CPU stays at 5%-15%.

Also currently, without RAM or CPU usage going any higher than 50%-60%, any programs such as Chrome, Discord, Steam, Task Manager will stop responding for various amounts of time but will never be slow in use.

I stopped various services under svchost that could have been causing some spikes but still no change.

Added pictures for Task and Resource manager.

Any advice or help is appreciated... Read more

A:PC Freeze/Lockup | High RAM usage, Low CPU usage

Open up task manager and click the startup tab and see what programs are running at startup. Disable any that you don't need running at startup....this should help.

Secondly, I would add another 8 GB of RAM of the exact same make/model of your current RAM sticks. That is, if you ave the available slots for them.

Hi I have http://support.hp.com/hk-en/document/c04739031 this touchscreen HP Pavilion laptop...Quick stats 4gb ram, 1tb harddrive, originally windows 8 but now windows 10.I've had it around about a year (probably just longer) and it has been very lightly used - maybe once a week or less, on average. It's been getting steadily slower and now it's just taking the biscuit really... I googled around a bit and found how to check the task manager, which mostly shows 98 or 99% usage, when the biggest apps are using 3-7mb of disk. The memory is always around 40-80%, just from using firefox on the internet... This morning I did some more googling and found how to stop windows search and supersearch, which means that the memory is now showing either 0% or still 99% every couple of minutes. Fragmentation is normally really low, as is storage used. I only have a select few pieces of software on here (the most 'heavy' photoshop cs2, anaconda ipython notebook, netbeans ide), other than the norm (browsers, microsoft office, netflix, etc) It struggles to run a browser and microsoft word at the same time and this is a huge (very irritating) problem as I need to do research for my lab reports as I write them... and I need several of the python notebook things open for my coursework too. Does anyone have any ideas how I can spruce up my laptop to make it run faster? Is this disk usage likely to be a physical fault (that needs fixing)? Is it worth making it do a... Read more

mraynor778 Hello;Allow me to welcome you to the HP forums! When MS did the Win10 Upgrade, it overwrote your prior HP drivers with generic ones, and that can result in reduced performance, especially in video-intensive tasks.  One minor thing that might help a bit is checking the drivers you have installed against the ones for Win10 for your laptop on this page: http://support.hp.com/us-en/drivers/selfservice/HP-Pavilion-15-ab000-Notebook-PC-series-(Touch)/7777... I have an old HP DV6 and what improved its performance under Win10 the most was replacing the hard drive with an SSD, which gave me improvement in boot speed and application launch time. SSD price are coming down all the time and you can get a 500GB SSD today for what you would have paid for a 120GB model a year ago. Other than that, there's really not much you can do as you already have 4GB of system memory and adding more will not yield any noticeable performance improvement.

So, a few days ago my c drive got corrupted apparently, then it asked to repair a few times. The repairing happened very slowly, after which I noticed my disk usage kept spiking to 100%.
In order to fix it, I Googled a few solutions. This is what I've done to try to solve this problem:
1. Closed superfetch, windows search and disabled it.
2. Ran chkdsk.exe several times to try to fix my c drive. According to my laptop the drive's fine.
3. Tried sfc /scannow, after 15 or so hours it got stuck at 100%
4. Made a virtual memory for my c drive, double that of my RAM
My OS is Windows 8.1.
The main problem is that the hard disk usage is fine for a few minutes after I start the laptop, but then it gets stuck at 100% and things stop responding.
What do I do? Thanks for your help in advance.

I had just recently witnessed the 'Blue Screen of Death'. Ok, so that kinda pissed me off and I lost everything that was in my laptop. But in a way I was relieved because I figured everything would be faster now that there's nothing in the laptop (or so I think).

Everything runs smooth and fast as usual, except one thing (so far); and that's my Internet browser.

Whether it's Mozilla, I.E explorer or Opera I'm using, my CPU usage is always around 20% usage, which is ok. But when I start scrolling up and down (even if the page has no images or videos or anything huge to load), my CPU usage goes up to 80-100%. I really do need my browsers to run fast, it's the only thing I use my laptop for. I never had this problem before I got the 'Blue Screen Of Death'. Also, when I scroll up and down there's a wavy effect, really laggy looking. How can I fix this? Thanks.

We have a laptop on our domain which has apparently been getting very slow over the past few weeks/months but the user has only now raised it as a problem as it is taking a huge amount of time logging in, even in Safe Mode. The hard drive indicator is almost constantly lit but memory and CPU usage are low when I do eventually get logged in and am able to open Talk Manager.

I have tried using 'Last known good Configuration' without any effect.  Hard drive space in use is around 40%.

Although I have not timed it I have as I write this been waiting now about 30 minutes for it to load into Safe Mode from switch on.  At present I have a mouse pointer on a black screen, 'Safe Mode' in the four corners and 'Microsoft ® Windows ® (Build 7601: Service Pack 1) at the top of the screen.  There is presently no Task Bar or anything else on screen.  There is no hour-glass by the mouse pointer,  Just as I finished typing that sentence the Task Bar appeared.  After 5 minutes the 'Windows Help and Support' window opened and the desktop icons appeared.  The System Tray clock had not updated for the 5 minutes prior to the Help window opening.

The machine is a Dell Latitude E6410 running Windows 7 Professional x64.

There is a network share mapped to drive letter S: (with CSC-CACHE).

As of yesterday, Task Manager shows Service Host: Network Location Awareness with high CPU usage (15-25% - at top of list with nothing else running). IP Helper, SSDP Discovery, Quality Windows Audio Video Experience and Windows Management Instrumentation also bump up near the top of CPU usage, and I don't ever remember seeing any of those particular items before when checking CPU usage. If they were there before (and are not new), they were down in the pack where they were not noticed, running smaller amounts of usage normally.

Since noticing these differences in CPU usage, this laptop has slowed down exponentially, as if browser hanging wasn't bad enough (see below). Cooling fan is also running at high speed constantly - no pauses when not physically using computer - never stops now.

Hi everyone,

I'm not sure if this is the right place to start the thread, but I didn't know where else I should post it, so.

My laptop has become extremely slow during booting and regular use. I can easily get a cup of coffee across the street during booting time and by the time I come back, my laptop might still not be ready...

The booting itself is not the problem; the login screen shows up in about 40 seconds (in comparison to everything else, this is really fast). After logging in, actually, it takes almost 10 minutes before I can normally use the laptop. I tried opening programs earlier than the 10-min wait, but the laptop simply doesn't respond or opens the program 2 mins later (which immediately says 'doesn't respond').

Some specs:
Dell Inspiron 15 N5050
bought July 2012 (Windows 7), upgraded to Windows 10 in 2015
Processor: Intel (R) Celeron(R) CPU B815 @ 1.60 GHz
RAM: 3 GB
Hard Disk: 320 GB
64-bit Operating System

I ranAdwCleaner which had no result. I have AVG Free 2017 installed as AntiVirus program and ZoneAlarm as Firewall. I also ran Malwarebytes and the Sophos Virus Removal Tool; No threats were found.

Maybe the laptop is just getting old and I simply need to buy a new one? I hope someone can help me get the old thing back on track again, 'cause it still looks decent and other than the speed/performance issue, it always has worked fine!

Thanks in advance.

Yesterday, I click on an innocuous-looking story link (referral to a major website) and saw my command prompt window open briefly and then close. Subsequently, my IE said that security had been turned off. I turned it back on, but on every following request, the browser hesitated and I saw things like "waiting for atdht" and the like, which I understand to be spyware/tracking cookies? Over the past eight hours, the sluggishness has gotten much worse, to the point where the laptop freezes and needs to be hard rebooted. I ran several malware scans and came up empty and also installed Comodo firewall today, but that was after the apparent infection.DDS log is below. Attach is attached. The GMER Ark file took over two hours to run and is too large to attach or paste into the post (it crashes the reply). Not sure if this is due to the install of the Comodo firewall, but that name appears a lot in the file. About a year ago, I noticed that my computer was running slow (both online and off) and that the explorer.exe process listed in the Windows Task Manager was usually running very high. Windows Explorer seemed to crash a lot as well. A few months ago, I attempted to install Kaspersky Internet Security 7.0 on my computer and before the install completed a warning window popped up saying something like 'there is already another instance of Kaspersky running' (which was not the case since this was the first time I had ever attempted to install Kaspersky software) and the install failed. When I rebooted my computer, I got the blue screen of death for a few seconds and then Windows booted with a message saying that Windows had recovered from a serious problem. Since recovering from whatever happened after the failed Kaspersky install, my computer is slower than ever and the Task Manager still shows a high CPU usage even though the System Idle Process is high and there isn't any processes listed that are using much CPU time at all.

I just scanned my system with the latest updated versions of AdAware, Spybot S&D, SuperAntiSpyware, and Avira AntiVir. All of them found nothing. I then cleaned my computer with CCleaner and ran HijackThis.

Here is the log:

My friend, who has a very low income was given a Dell Optiplex GX240 running Win2K Pro. 512MB RAM

To help her out, I got rid of porn, viruses, and spyware using:

Ad-Aware, AVG spyware and AV free versions, Trend Micro House Call, Spybot

I checked the task manager, and has constant 100% CPU usage, avg memory usage

The system runs, but apps open slow, so I tried some freeware reg cleaners:

CCleaner, Eusing Free Registry Cleaner, Wise Registry cleaner

After hours of searching on web, the fixes I found don't work, so I give up. Can someone help. My friend doesn't have the money to pay someone to fix this, and she was so happy to get a new computer.

Can anyonre help???

Hello,
I am pretty sure I have some sort of virus, I don't know what it is but every now and then (this is getting more frequent) My computer fan runs at its highest possible rate the battery life goes from 8 hours to 1.5 ish and my computer is generally slower. I have tried various fixes (although I have no idea what I am doing really so I may have caused more harm than good). Is there a way someone could walk a tech idiot like myself through getting rid of something like this?
I have attached my process log (although items keep moving up and down the list) and have tried programs like CClean, AVG, Avast and Combo fix (which I know is frowned upon on here but I did it before I saw the warnings).
Combofix seems to work but only for a few days at most. After I have run it AVG says that it has identified a virus and would i like to remove it (of course I do) but this is the only time AVG reconizes anything.
I have attached my latest combofix log

Please help

Matt

This problem began yesterday. I noticed my CPU was at 90C constantly with very high CPU usage (>50%). I had no major programs running. I rebooted several times and the program persisted.

1. I went into safe mode and everything was normal. So this rules out hardware issues.
2. I reformatted and everything was normal..but then after installing these few programs, the problem began again.

Hello. First off, having utorrent effectively craps you out on this forum since it has a bad rep. Suggest you remove it and come back, start a new thread. That said, if you're familiar with Task Manager, check the CPU percentage on the processes tab (click CPU column to sort). This may help pinpoint which app(s) are whack.

Hi, I just got a brand new Asus K42JR laptop, running a trial version of Windows 7 Ultimate, and I have an as of yet unopened OEM System Builder Pack for Windows 7 Home Basic. I first installed a bunch of basic software, TuneUp Utilities 2010 and Daemon Tools. Then, when I got to installing AutoCAD 2011 I made the fatal mistake (at least that's what I think it is) of closing the laptop cover while the install was still running.

When I opened it again, the setup program was asking me for the install disk (it was an ISO image mounted in Daemon Tools) and I decided to cancel the setup and start from scratch again. First I clicked the cancel button and waited for around 3mins doing nothing, then I decided to try fiddling around, task switching and opening the start menu and the like, which I could do.

I finally got to close the setup with Task Manager, but the initial lag from the moment I clicked the cancel button never went away. I then tried to uninstall autocad, and I got a message that AutoCADSetup.res couldn't be found or something. Since then I've tried System Restore all the way back to since before I installed TuneUp, but the lag persisted.

A check in my Event Viewer showed me that I was experiencing a lot of iaStor Event ID 9 errors. I also tried booting into safe mode thinking that it would be lagless but it also lagged when I got into safe mode. Why is this happening and what can I do to fix it? A quick check on a forum post I saw said to run Chkdsk, ... Read more

Since the laptop is new, I'm assuming, you don't have much data to lose/backup.
I'd restore it to factory settings.

Hi,

I bought a new acer e1-510 laptop few months ago with no previous OS installed. I installed Win 7 x64 SP1 - clean installation, installed the drivers but it's lagging since.
I switched the whole graphic visualization to be high performance friendly so it looks like win 95 but t's still lagging, slow performance is still present.

I used those software like advance system care but no luck.

Any idea how to boost responsiveness?

A:Win7 is generally slow,new laptop,new installation,can't figure it out

Defragment the hard drive 3 to 4 times.

Run disk cleanup several times.

Do not use any software to boost Windows 7 performance.

Uninstall Advance System Care immediately.

Have you run all rounds of windows update yet ?

You have a Celeron, which is possibly the worst cpu you can have.

You only have 2 GB of memory, you need more. 8 GB total if possible would be ideal.

A laptop hard drive usually spins at only 5400 RPM, install windows to a solid state drive for the best performance.
