Can’t turn Windows Firewall On, Internet access blocked, other services not starting

Q: Can’t turn Windows Firewall On, Internet access blocked, other services not starting

The Hijack this log and Services.msc info is at the bottom of post.

Some Background: Problems began after installing Avast! (AVG was already installed and not disabled.) Re-started computer and Avast! automatically started a full scan. The scan was taking ages so left it running over-night. In the morning presented with a black screen with text: Hard disk error. Insert disk and press any key to continue.
Pushing any key the Windows failed to load with the following error message: Missing or corrupted file System32\Drivers\isapnp.sys.

Searched on Google (on another computer) and found how to fix this problem using the System disk.

Windows loaded now but further problems emerged:
- not able to turn Windows Firewall On
- internet access blocked

Couldnt open Avast!, just got an error message.
Uninstalled AVG in case this was the problem.
Was then able to open Avast! but decided to uninstall it (in case this was the reason for the problems). Nothing changed however with Firewall or Internet access.

Tried System Restore:
- appeared to work but ultimately advised that System Restore was unsuccessful for all restore points attempted. I tried several restore points from 1, 2 and 3 days before problems started to a few weeks ago all were unsuccessful.

Internet Access issues:
- IP address is all entered correctly under Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) properties.
- under local area connection status says Connected on the one tab (regardless of whether the modem is switched on or off), but on the other tab info for 'Connection status' has all IP address details blank.

For Windows Firewall:
- tried Run cmd, and Netsh winsock reset followed by re-start but no change.
- typed firewall.cpl in Run and got the following error message:
Windows firewall settings cannot be displayed because the associated service is not running. Do you want to start the Windows Firewall/Internet Connection Service?
Selecting Yes = 'Windows cannot start the Windows Firewall/Internet Connection Service'

Installed and ran Anti-Malware from Malwarebytes.
Identified 4 infections.
Removed them and re-started computer.
On re-start Windows Firewall was now On, but when I opened Internet Explorer still no internet access, and then received a message saying that the Windows Firewall was now Off again. I couldnt turn the Firewall On again.
Ran Anti-malware again but no infections detected.

Re-installed Avast! and ran a thorough scan, but no infections detected.
When re-booting the computer I receive the following four error messages for Avast!
Avast!: Mail Scanner warning.
Avast! will not be able to protect incoming mail (IMAP protocol)
Error 10050
- as above but for (NNTP protocol), (POP3 protocol) and outgoing mail (SMTP protocol).

Ran Services.msc.

A number of Automatic Services had not started. Tried to start them manually and received the following error messages:

DHCP Client Could not start DHCP Client on the Local Computer. Error 1068: The dependency service or group failed to start.

DNS Client Could not start DNS Client on the Local Computer. Error 1068: The dependency service or group failed to start.

Google Software Updater was able to start manually, but then it automatically stops moments later.

IPSEC Services Could not start IPSEC Services on the Local Computer. Error 1068: The dependency service or group failed to start.

NVIDIA Driver Helper Service ..started then stopped. Some services stop if they have no work to do

Windows Firewall/Internet Connection Sharing (ICS) could not start Windows Firewall/Internet Connection Sharing (ICS) on the Local computer. Error 2: The system cannot find the specified file.

Preferred Solution: Can’t turn Windows Firewall On, Internet access blocked, other services not starting

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

Hey peeps. I found out about this site from google, while searching for an answer regarding my firewall issues, and I happened on an old thread that discussed similar problems. I downloaded and ran the Farbar Service Scanner, and it created a Notepad file, and it said this:

A:Multiple virus infection, DHCP & Themes services not starting automatically, Windows update site blocked.

I am also having this exact same issue (DHCP, themes, pop-ups, etc), I have placed a batch file in the startup with "net start DHCP" which seems to reinitialise the DHCP client *most* of the time, however it is very very slow starting the service.

So far I have tried combofix, superantispyware, MBAM, microsoft security essentials, regrun reanimator but with no luck.

I'm going to try a repair install later on tonight, in the meantime did anyone find a solution?

Could someone please tell me what that means was trying to do remotely with my computer?

My ZoneAlarm firewall very very frequently gives me messages that it has blocked traffic to (and from) What/who IS that anyway?(

I did a ZoneWatch back search and that appears to come from Southern California, and does it have to do with assigning or monitoring Domains???? (it said something about domains)

Please tell me what all that is, please?
And should I keep blocking it? (ZoneAlarm never gives me a choice...it just notifies me that it has been blocked.

Please help me with all this???

So, this is the second time in the last week I've had this problem. After removing Vista Antivirus 2012 (or some variant of it) the firewall will not turn on. In the control panel, under the Windows Firewall tab, it says: Windows Firewall is not using the recommended settings to protect your computer. If I click Update settings now I get an error message that says: Windows Firewall was unable to make the requested updates. If I go to the Services tool the Windows Firewall and Windows Defender entries are missing. If I type "netsh firewall reset" it says "The service has not been started." I ran the Windows Firewall Fixer tool and it fail. I ran an FSS Scan, here is a link to the results(would it be better to post them here?): http://pastebin.com/EEMCH0WJ I was reading a thread where someone had a similar issue (Here) but I don't get the error number. The last time I had this issue it was on a Windows 7 machine and I just re-installed the OS. I could re-install the OS on this computer as well but I would rather not, and I would like to know if there is another way to fix this issue. My OS is Windows Vista Home Premium. It's an HP Compaq Presario F700 Laptop. Is there any other info I should post? I really appreciate the help.

Hello,I have the paid version of AVG 9. My computer is 64 bit, running Windows 7. I mostly use FireFox as my browser, but also I.E. for work from home.Today I found that by going to Tools you can see the Firewall settings in AVG. Why this is not available within the Firewall component is beyond me.In a nutshell, the following "System services and protocols" are blocked by default and I want to know if they NEED to be.Internet Information ServicesPPTP VPNDNS ServerAH ProtocolESP ProtocolGRE ProtocolWindows Remote ManagementBranchCache/Windows Remote Managment (Compatability Mode)Novell NetwareReally funny thing is (that's sarcasm) I was trying to set up a HOME network recently and had no clue all of this was blocked. I wrote AVG, prior to coming here, to ask why each are blocked...just to see what they say.I want to eventually set up the network between my wired LAN desktop (7) and my wireless laptop (vista). So I am thinking I need to allow some/all/who knows of these??Now in researching this I am seeing all sorts of criticism toward AVG. Luckily I only have 3 more months before my license expires. I also got a "false positive" virus pop-up yesterday. That was fun! Lately I've also been having a lot of issues with FireFox. One day it was fine (after the 3.6.6 update that is) and now I can't change themes. This might not be related?!I am very frustrated. When you PAY for a program, you shouldn't have to do this kind of investigative work to use it. ... Read more

A:AVG Firewall blocked services/protocols

Hello and welcome to the BleepingComputer

The list of services you have posted consists of servers and VPN protocols of different type - that open ports for outside access. These should be blocked unless you are specifically wanting to run the related service.

If you have paid for AVG, then you should stick to it. Personally, I prefer avast! which is light on resources and very fast and free antivirus.

Help guys!

I think I got a virus - I can't change the firewall settings anymore, on avast - my real time shields status is unknown and it won't let me turn it on. When I try to turn it on it says "Unable to start the file system shield! Shield unreachable."

ALso I can't access the internet. I get the computer icon with the exclamation mark and when I try to diagnose, it says "Windows could not automatically detect this network's proxy settings."

I scanned with spyware doctor, malwarebytes, adware, super antispyware already and now scanning with avast. The previous ones removed alot of viruses but I still think there are some remaining.

I can't even use restore point cause it always fails :/ Please help!

Over the past week I've had Comodo Firewall blocking network access to a couple of Windows services and I can't understand why. On Monday it went and blocked three svchost.exe inbound connections, on Wednesday it blocked a MSASCui.exe inbound request (Windows Defender. It keeps turning itself on even though I disabled multiple times a week) and within the last hour I've had it block a outbound request from "Windows Operating System". I've unblocked all of them.

Any reason for this? System applications, files and processes should be trusted by Comodo so I can't understand the reason why the firewall is blocking network access to them. I also haven't a clue what svchost would be receiving with its inbound requests or what Windows Operating System would be sending with its outbound request.

I'm using Windows 7 if that's any help. I'm off to work but shall respond to any questions or queries once I return.

I installed ZoneAlarm free version several days back and got this alert from ZoneAlarm a few days later:

ZoneAlarm Security Alert
The firewall has blocked Internet access to Carol.netgear.com ( (TCP Port 445) from your computer [TCP Flags: S]

All local IPs are in the 192.168.xxx.xxx range, including the "Carol" computer.

I did a little research via Google and came up with the following text on a web page. I used those instructions and the alert came back today with the same IP number. The first alert was several days ago. By the way, Windows Updates is disabled and I have manually done none since following the below instructions:
You receive an alert from ZoneAlarm SiteAdvisor as follows:

The firewall has blocked Internet access to whatever.com (xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx) (HTTP) from your computer (TCP Flags: S)

Why this alert:

Windows Update has updated (changed) the files used for networking and internet access and ZA does not recognize the new files. The file names and locations may match; but, the new file sizes and checksums don't.

To solve this, just reset the ZA database:

- Boot your computer into the Safe Mode.
- Navigate to the c:\windows\internet logs folder.
- Delete backup.rdb, iamdb.rdb, *.ldb and the tvDebug files.
- Empty the Recycle Bin.
- Reboot to Normal Mode. You may see a 'new network found' alert. Set it to "Trusted". Then do as follows:

yesterday I noticed that my Windows Firewall service was stopped and I couldn't even turn it on through the Control Panel (error 08x007042c). Going to the advanced settings I got error 0x6D9. I googled the topic and on some pages there were solutions which seemed to help most people BUT me.

this for example

I further read that this might be because of a virus but first wanted to try the other solutions people offered.

Now I downloaded a Kaspersky trial and it found the Zero Access Rootkit which was mentioned a couple of times in relation to my problem.

Kaspersky apparently deleted the files but the Firewall service still won't start.

What can I try to do to get out of this situation?

I am having a problem with Windows 8 64 bit system's Firewall. It is stopped, when I click run in services it says ---------------------------
Windows could not start the Windows Firewall on Local Computer. For more information, review the System Event Log. If this is a non-Microsoft service, contact the service vendor, and refer to service-specific error code 5.
dependencies are
Base Filtering Engine
microsoft Windows Filtering Platform

I am running ESET 5 Antivirus

I was worried about Windows Command Processor. I keep getting a mysterious CMD window that would pop up everything I'd log into Windows. I was toying around with disabling all non Windows services and restarting to isolate the cause. It was when I went back to a normal boot that I had this happen. Ideas? Thanks in advance

Ok so this last week I've been going through a series of unfortunate events. I'll briefly describe the story, telling of what I know to avoid misinforming anyone who wishes to help me.

A few days ago, I got a virus called AV Protection 2011. If you don't know what that is, its a fake virus that implements itself in your system giving off fake readings of viruses invading your computer. It aims to steal your credit card number and your money, hoping you will buy it to prevent future viruses. I ran my computer in safe mode and ran Malwarebytes AntiMalware to get right of this threat.

A day or so after, I think leftovers of this virus and still had a program called ping.exe infesting my computer, as well as ad popups. Ping.exe can't be deleted in normal mode. When deleted in task manager, it will reform itself in a continuous cycle. This virus takes up alot of computer usage. To solve this problem, I went into safe mode and deleted the ping.exe and ping6.exe in the system32 file. After going back to normal mode, I had no more ad popups or ping.exe occurrences. Currently, this was nighttime. To end the night, I wanted to make sure ping.exe was gone so I ran TDSSKiller to check for any dangerous rootkits. If you've used TDSSKiller, you know you need to restart for the complete cure of the rootkit. I found a dangerous rootkit, cured it, and had to restart my computer. As I was hopping into bed, the computer screen showed a blue screen, displaying some sort of updates on my comput... Read more

Hello. First off, thank you very much for the time and expertise you donate via this website.

The issue began last week with a program that showed up on my computer called Guard Online. It may have been named AV Guard Online as well. A Windows Security alert popped up, stating there were security issues that were compromised. It also showed my avast! antivirus was turned off, and when I tried to turn it back on, the antivirus would not turn on. When I reluctantly clicked on the notice about Windows Security, it showed Windows Firewall was turned off, as well as Windows Malware. I tried to turn on Firewall, but it stated I wasn't able to access it and it had to be turned on manually. When I tried to do this, another message said that it couldn't be accessed or it couldn't be started. I use Firefox for my main browser, and I have had instances with link redirects from Google searches and websites that will change to another website at random.

I have run SuperAntiVirus and got rid of some items. Any assistance is greatly appreciated.

One or more of the identified infections is a backdoor trojan/rootkit.

This type of infection allows hackers to remotely control your computer, log keystrokes, steal critical system information, and download and execute files without your knowledge.

If you do any banking or other financial transactions on the PC or if it should contain any other sensitive information, please get to a known clean computer and change all passwords where applicable, and it would be wise to contact those same financial institutions to apprise them of your situation.

Please refer to Microsoft's Online Safety article for tips on creating a strong password.

Do not change passwords or do any transactions from the infected computer until it has been cleaned.

Please note that these fixes are not instantaneous. Most infections require more than one round to properly eradicate.

I posted this on Windows 8 forum and was told to post here by LunarLander as follows:

"The most likely cause of the problem is that removal of the PUP's didn't go the extra mile to fix the broken connection problem. Some times, removal of malware breaks things, as the malware configured Windows to work differently. Go to the Malware Removal sub-forum and post a message there."

Can't download TSG SysInfo as have no browser. Machine won't start in Safe Mode. F8 makes no difference.

"I am a newbie. I've got some knowledge, but not an expert by any means.

A friend's daughter's HP Stream NoteBook PC 13 stopped working. Win 8.1 64bit.

Error Message (As far as I can remember) 'Windows has blocked access to the internet as IP address has been corrupted'.
It also blocked access to everything else, but have got past that.

Was able to run MalwareBytes and got rid of 4,578 PUPs, but apparently no viruses.

The browser, IE 10, has disappeared and I have had no luck in downloading a copy onto a memory stick from a different machine and installing it on the NoteBook.

Have got WiFi connection to internet, but always 'Page cannot be displayed' or 'You are not connected to the internet'.

Strangely Windows can still update Weather and MSN News in real time, so the connection works.

Can the Windows block be removed so that I can get back online."

Hope you can help.

You guys helped me out many years ago and did an awesome job. I have been clean till now

I first started noticing problems a few weeks ago when my Security Essentials stopped updating, then I noticed I couldn't get to updates.microsoft.com or anything similar.

I am now getting a program called WhiteSmoke that installs itself after I run SpyBot and Malewarebytes which has worked well for me in the past.

I was unable to successfully run a GMER scan. Getting blue screen of death mid scan. I have been unable to successfully reboot my machine but if I mess around with it I can boot up in Safe Mode or Regular mode.

I get these errors randomly:
RUNDLL "Error loading c:\windows\uwuhidonokecikot.dll Access is denied."

I also get a Win32 error that asks me to close down a svchost process. generally after that i am unable to get my firewall back up.

Hey. My firewall (Zone Alarm Free Edition) has blocked over 16,000 access attempts today. I ran Ad-ware, and Spybot and I have no spyware. I'm running an online anti-virus scan right now (Panda) and so far its clean (its not done scanning yet) but i'm kind of worried... my firewall has never blocked 16,000 attempts in one day before. Why is it doing this?

Hi everyone

Im having an issue with windows vista. I cant turn on my firewall or access the internet via my wireless router. I can connect to the network, but I get a limited connectivity message and cant use the internet. I try to manually start the firewall, but it wont work.

Norton 360 came pre-installed on my laptop. I used it for the 90 day free subscription. Then i kept getting popups to renew it. And without thinking, I went to control panel and deleted it this past monday. Ever since I have had problems turning on my firewall and accessing the internet via a wireless router (using my brothers computer to write this.)

I did a system restore for 3 days before i deleted norton, and it looked like norton came back. But when I tried to run it under the security window on vista....it acts like its not there. I try to turn on norton via the .exe button, via windows security center, and my mouse gives the working sign but nothing happens. I try to turn the firewall on manually and it wont work.

Is there a way I can fix this because i have a feeling i dont have internet access because the firewall is not enabled. but what can i do if i cant manually turn it on? should i uninstall norton again???

Thanks everyone for your help

So on Thursday night my computer got a bunch of spyware, malware, things of that nature on it. I ran Spybot and did a virus scan and I was able to get everything off except 4 things. The next morning I was able to get the rest of the items off my computer but when I tried to get online neither Opera, nor FireFox could load any page.

I use a wireless connection and it says Im connected but I cant perform anything related to the internet. I did all the usual things that I normally would to fix the problem, but it didnt work this time. I connected my laptop directly to the modem but that didnt help. I thought I may have accidently deleted something important so I did a system restore and still nothing.

I ran winsockfix but whenever I do it keeps saying something likeError 53 and it was unsuccessful. Ive searched and tried everything I can find. Ive tried all the netsh winsock things in command prompt and netsh int ip resetand the other things related to that, but it did nothing.
Ive tried a couple other thing I cant remember at the moment but nothings worked. Any help would be appreciated.

Also not sure if this helps

Recently, I started have trouble with my Internet-related system services. I'm able to connect to the Internet fine, but my Internet connection icon in the system tray has a big red X. When I hover over the icon, I see the following notice:

"Connection status: unknown

The dependency service or group failed to start."

When I go into Services, I see that a bunch of the Internet-related services have not been started, even though some of them are set to Automatic. For instance, the DHCP Client service is not running, but it is set to Automatic. The same holds true for the Diagnostic Policy Service listed below the DHCP Client service. If I try to start either of these service, I receive the following notice:

"Windows could not start the DHCP Client (or DPS) service on Local Computer.

Error 5: Access is denied."

My user account has administrative rights. I've search around the Internet for a resolution to this issue. A lot of people seem to have encountered this situation, but I haven't found anyone who has been able to resolve the problem. Hopefully, someone in this forum can help.

Hi there it sounds as though you may have something nasty lurking from within and you may need to run some malware programs and anti spyware, but first of all if you go to the site that i have shown here Black Viper's Web Site it shows you a full list of all services that you have rtunning in what ever OS you have, it lists from default right through to the tweaked versions, it also tells you how to stop and restart your services if your having problems, so give it a go failing that pop back to the forums and see if there's any other solutions to help you. But i would also like to point out that if BV's site does help after doing everything and resetting your services i would still run some malware and anti spyware programs aswell to see if your infected in any way. Good Luck mblack

All right, so, this problem began yesterday when my dear computer froze while I was attempting to log in to my Windows account.

I, always the foolish one, decided to turn the poor dear off by hitting the power button. I left it alone for a while, and when I came back and it had been turned on and logged in, the taskbar was missing, which I normally attribute to explorer.exe screwing up, but the desktop icons were showing and explorer seemed to be running. I then opened Firefox, went to a school site, clicked on a .doc file, and opened it. Microsoft Word greeted me with:

"This document could not be registered. It will not be possible to create links from other documents to this document. (C:\DOCUME~1\...\[filename].doc)"

It goes on to work normally, and I can save the document (its first choice is the Temp folder), so...yeah.

I got a briefing on the problems today.

When it was last turned on, a message came on screen involving the words "Invalid security ID"; I don't know exactly what it said, but it did SOMETHING (please don't blame me for the vagueness, I got this information secondhand) that took a long time. I don't know WHAT, but yeah. My mother also tried something that gave her "five seconds to press a key" but no one bothered to write down the message as her boyfriend wasn't there.

Basically, now:

I have experienced almost the exact same problem right down to the port 443 message. I have tried all fixes I can locate such as remedies for error code 0x800720efd which is the error you also probably get if you attempt to check for windows updates, none of the remedies worked.

Two recent things that may have something to do with the issue: When running a scan via Norton Internet Security, it had discovered a trojan horse, apparently NIS can't just fix this when you "apply actions" to it ?

Another was attempting to download and use the video phone/chat program called OOVOO. My problems started when I attempted to uninstall this program.

Remove all stored wireless profiles on the machine and search for the network and connect.

If that doesn't do it, try it with no encryption on the router and see if you can connect that way. If so, updating the drivers on the laptop may be the answer. Of course, you should also have the latest updates for XP as well.

Hi, I'm hoping someone can help with this.

I have a PC running Windows XP Pro SP3, and I can't access the internet at all. I've tried different browsers, like Firefox & Chrome, with the same result. I can't even access the setup page for my DSL modem, which is connected via Ethernet cable. Device Manager says my network card is working properly and connected.

Now here's the weird bit: some programs CAN access the internet on my computer. I have a MagicJack (a VOIP telephone jack that connects to my computer via USB, so the computer has to be on and connected to the internet in order to make calls), and it works to make & take calls just fine. I also tried running fss.exe, and it reports that both Yahoo and Google IP addresses are accessible.

The part about Windows services actually started (or at least I first noticed it) with my printer. I kept getting errors when trying to print that the print spooler service was not running. I had to go into services.msc and turn it on manually. I've had to do that several times. So I'm wondering if the problem with the internet is also a services issue, but I don't know which services to look at. I also tried using Driveimage XML to do a backup of my hard drive on an external HDD but the Windows Shadow Services is not running so DIX reports that the backup may be corrupted. I tried manually restarting Shadow Services in services.msc but it will only run for less than a minute and then... Read more

I was wondering if someone here knew how to turn off ALL remote access applications and services (the ones for poeple to control your desktop, remote assistance, etc). I know Windows 7 calls itself "trying to make tech support easier" but I have very sensitive information on my computer and I don't want my computer sending out undisclosed guest invitations for anybody to use to connect to my computer and access my personal files. I don't even want tech support connecting without my consent.
I don't want remote assistance now, and probably never will. The only thing I want to stay on "remotely" is Windows error reporting.

Hope someone knows how to do this.

Hi there guys.

A mate of mine is having a problem with his internet connection. About a week ago he found himself unable to connect to the internet. We checked, and he no longer has a connection listed in Network Connections. Attempting to add one using the wizard does not work as the option button for adding a dialup connection is greyed out.

Have tried to add a new connection via Internet Options in the control panel. We get "Error 711 Cannot load Remote Access Service Connection Manager."
At this point I checked the services relating to his network connections. The Remote Access Connection manager and a few of its dependants were stopped.

When attempting to restart the Remote Access Connection Manager service I got "Could not start the Remote Access Connection Manager service on Local Computer. Error 5: Access is denied". We had logged in as administrator by the way so should have full access permissions. Also got errors when attempting to start any of the other services relating to network connections. Even when set to automatic these services do not start.
Now I have done a bit of research and come up with a couple of workarounds. I have followed Microsoft's instructions as can be seen here:
We tried:
- re-installing Windows XP (only an upgrade over the top, as he had files that he did not want to lose)

I use windows Xp and the other noticed some random popups, so I ran a combination of anti virus programs to see what was going on (AVG, Malwarebytes, and Spy bot) Anyways malwarebytes identified rogue.securitysuite and trojan.hiloti and removed them. Now when I try to use internet explorer I get the windows cannot display this page screen. When I hit the run network diagnostics button I get the following message:

Windows cannot connect to the internet using HTTP, HTTPS, or FTP. This is probably caused by firewall settings on this computer. Check firewall ssettings for HTTP port(80), HTTPS port(443), and FTP port(21).

I called my ISP and they said everything was good on their end and I have checked all wires and restarted. I have also found it only happens when I am long in as my user on the computer. I tried going in on safe mode and when I went in as the default administrator log in I could use internet explorer and I can also use internet explorer in normal mode when I am logged in as a guest on the computer.

I also attempted turning off the windows firewall completly(turned back on now) when I was under my user name but still could not use internet explorer. To my knowledge I have no other firewalls and this computer is not networked to any others.

I attached the diagnostics logs from when I ran the network diagnostics

Please give suggestions as to what I should do

I am deploying 10 brand new Dell Optiplex 755 machines with Vista Business. However, every single machine, after being OK for awhile, will eventually have problems starting services, such as DHCP, Event Viewerand Firewall (in total it's about 12 services that won't start, but I believe that is because of a cascading effect). You get Error 5: Access is Denied in Event log, or if you try to manually start the service.

The network connection status does not work, you get "The service or dependency failed to start" and just a red X through the icon. Other things won't work like remote desktop, some audio functions (eg in webcams), etc.

This problem is driving me crazy and I have done everything under the sun to fix it.

See http://support.microsoft.com/kb/943996/en-us as it describes the problem pretty well, however, the solution does NOT work in my case.

I have reinstalled machines, system restored machines (which sometimes works, sometimes doesn't), NOT installed windows updates, installed windows updates.
I should tell you I am joining these machines to a domain (windows 2003 server). We also had a Windows 2000 server as a DC and I thought that was the cause of the problem, however I asked our system analyst to remove that server as a DC. So now only the Windows 2003 server is the DC, but the problem is still there.

I will deploy the computer to the user, they will be fine for awhile, then after a little while if they ... Read more

out of curiosity, what happens if you "reserve' an ip for one of the failed machines in DHCP? Some of our Vista machines will randomly fail to pull a DHCP address, thus causing major issues with GPO's not running. In these cases, as a test, I setup reserved ip addresses for the mac address in dhcp and the issue resolved. Not sure why it happens though.

I have been having issues today trying to connect to the internet. Contacted my SP and they weren't much help, except for BIG money! Anyway, I have Windows XP. I ran a scan on my desktop and came up with 20 viruses which had been quarenteened. I emptied the quarenteen.
I called my local computer store who recommended Combo Fix. I have a laptop that I was able to load the program onto a USB. I inserted it into the desktop, started the whole thing going, it ran it's report etc but I am still unable to connect to the internet on a continual basis. It lets me in for a few minutes and then the latest message I got was the one in my topic title.......what should I do next?

A:A Program Was Blocked from using the internet, "Generic Host Process for WIN32 services

I would suggest a combination of Superantispyware and Malwarebytes. Then you might want to make sure that you arent being proxied to somewhere else (Open Internet Explorer>Tools>Internet Options>Connection tab>LAN Settings>Uncheck use proxy).

Everytime I open IE an error messeage gets displayed. I clicked the "Diagnose Connection Problems" button and the a box appeared saying "Windows confirmed that www.yahoo.com is currenly online, but is not responding to connection attemps at this time. This usually means that a irewall is runng somewhere between the wo computers and is blocking World Wide web servie (HTTP). Windows has confirmed that indows Firewall on this computer is correctly configured to allow this conection. However, a remote firewall mightbe blocking your connection." If you have access to this firewall then configure the firewall to allow connection through TCP port80. If you don't have acess contact your network aministrator or internet service provider. What should I do?

I don't know what to do now.

A:Internet Connection being blocked by remote firewall.

what it means is do you have your own firewall installed? other than windows own , by remote it means third party such as Norton , Kaspersky something like that.

could you goto start orb/programs/acessories/command prompt (but right click command prompt and choose run as administrator)

in the resulting box type ping www.g oogle.com then hit return (with a space between ping and the address)

it will send 4 packets of info and if your not blocked from the internet should look something like this

C:\Users\Darren>ping www.google.com

Pinging www.l.google.com [] with 32 bytes of data:
Reply from bytes=32 time=55ms TTL=44
Reply from bytes=32 time=55ms TTL=44
Reply from bytes=32 time=54ms TTL=44
Reply from bytes=32 time=54ms TTL=44

Ping statistics for
Packets: Sent = 4, Received = 4, Lost = 0 (0% loss),
Approximate round trip times in milli-seconds:
Minimum = 54ms, Maximum = 55ms, Average = 54ms
let us know what happens , the issue may just be with IE

Hello and welcome to TSF

Open up Zone Alarm and click on Program Control, then click on the tab Programs, select Internet Explore, and set under 'Access and set all the options to allow, they will then have a green tick in the box. The under 'Server' do the same thing.

Do you have these problems in any other browsers? Please try one of the below (both are free):

I have this very annoying pop up that is trying ot highlight these problems on my system, but i know its a rogue virus that is trying ot get me to buy their antivirus software by pretending to be a legit warning.

I downloaded 'search & destroy' and it did a great job as it found other problems, but this problem keeps popping up and not allowing me to use the internet.

It comes up with other false problems too, and I have been to other sites that say to delete these ceratin files, but I havent got the skills for that, and I dont know where to look or how to delete them.

I am using windows 7 and its a Novateck tablet.

Be grateful if anybody can help with this one.

What do you think of Windows own firewall? Does it also stop outbound connections?

What is it like compared to Zone Alarm? Is ZA in itself any good?

Also, is there a tool similar to ZA's internet lock where you can temporarily enable / disable internet access?

A:Windows Firewall or ZoneAlarm Free and stop internet access?

Personally speaking I have never bothered with software firewalls. I've always used the Windows one and the hardware firewall included in your router.

Been having an issue where McAfee firewall repeatedly turns off. I can turn it back on manually but it only stays on for around 30 seconds to 1 min. When the firewall is off the internet connection is seemingly blocked. On chrome I receive the message

"Google Chrome is having trouble accessing the network.
This may be because your firewall or antivirus software wrongly thinks that Google Chrome is an intruder on your computer and is blocking it from connecting to the Internet."

If I manually turn the firewall back on the internet connection resumes but only for the 30 seconds that the firewall stays on.

I'm assuming this is some sort of malware? I'm unsure what to do.
Scanning with McAfee and MBAM leads to no results.
Have previously scanned with TDSSkiller but that too reports no results.

Thanks for any help.

This morning on July 26th, I has an intrusion attempt blocked by Norton Internet Security Firewall. At the time, I had Interet Explorer open on two websites: aircanada.com and wrestlecrap.com. Both are legitimate websites. Wrestlecrap.com I've had no problems with in the past. Aircanada.com I had an issue with a few months back where the website would load and then suddenly, an error screen would come up saying that it could not connect to the site (not the blue screen). I let it go for a few weeks and then came back to the site and there was no problem. This morning, I had two tabs open on IE. Wrestlecrap.com had loaded and aircanada.com was in the process of loading when the firewall went off and then the error screen for IE came up on the tab I had opened for aircanada.com. Then the popups for Norton came up, so I pulled them up and found out that two intrusion attempts had been blocked.I immediately closed IE and began a full system scan with Norton. It found 25 tracking cookies which I deleted once the scan completed. I then ran scans with: TDSSKiller (no threats found) MBAM Anti-Malware on quick scan (no threats found) Super Anti-Spyware (53 tracking cookies found, all deleted). So far, nothing else has surfaced. IE and my PC still works. I'm wondering if there was anything with the intrusion attempts. I have yet to try those two sites again and don't plan on it anytime soon.So is there anything else I need to do and is there any cause for concern? The alerts according t... Read more

Hello sevenforums

After having absolutely no issues when I shut the computer down, to the computer acting strange and having several issues at the next startup. The issues are mainly related to the network, but not limited to it, so I decided to post it here, but unsure if it is the correct forum.

Note: I'm translating all messages from Danish to English, so they might not be completely accurate.

Issues are currently that I am not able to connect to the internet with the message: "service or group dependency failed to start". I'm unable to turn on the firewall with the following error: "Error 0x8007042c". Several services are't starting and I am unable to start them, I get "Error 5: Access denied", I was able to fix this on the diagnostic politic service, by editing permission in the registry editor at two folders called WMI and DPS. I'm currently scanning the computer with MSE, but I somewhat feel this is going to be a waste of time, but it is currently my last resort, except repair with Win7 CD or formatting of course. In my my task manager there is currently nothing taking CPU power at all, yet CPU use is at 30-50%, I'm guessing MSE is using CPU power, but why is it not listed?

So far I have tried the following:
sfc /scannow (Found no issues)
netsh reset
Changing permission in registry to get diagnostic tools working (Which then found no issues or where unable to fix it)

Any ideas or suggestions?

A:Services disabled and unable to start, no internet, no firewall, etc.

Do you have a Restore Point from before the issue? It sounds like it can't hurt to run it if so. Also I would try a full scan with Malwarebytes Antimalware if the Restore Point doesn't eliminate the problem.

Edit: MBAM free version is just fine for scanning.
