Preferred Solution: Computer freezes up

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hi all,For several months my PC has been frustratingly slow. However, I have dealt with it. Now however, when I click on "start" my PC will completely freeze, not allowing me to access anything. When closing programs, the desktop slowly scrolls back onto the screen instead of instantly appearing. I wish there was more details to share but there is none to my knowledge. I have recently ran spybot S&D and ran a virus scan but it has not helped. I have followed the instructions on the preparation post and here is the data in the DDS log. I am attaching the other log files as well. Thanks for your help in advance. Welcome to the BleepingComputer Forums. Since it has been a few days since you scanned your computer with HijackThis, we will need a new HijackThis log. For the past few weeks, about 1/2 hour after booting my computer up in the morning, whatever program I'm using at the moment will stop responding. If I continue to try to get it to respond, its screen will dim and I get the message "Not responding". The disk activity light goes on 100%. To a certain extent I can still get to other programs that are already running, but I can't open new ones. Usually, if I just sit and wait, after about 30-60 sec everything will be ok again; other times nothing will happen for several minutes after which I'll get a BSOD with the message "Windows was shut down..." and
Collecting data for crash dump ...
Initializing disk for crash dump ...

Because of this, I've been running Process Explorer. When the problem occurs I can switch to it if it's on the second screen of my dual-screen system. When I do so, almost everything seems normal:
CPU 1.5%
System Commit 3.46 GB
Physical Memory 3.0 GB
I/0 2 kB
Network 400 B
Disk 0 kB
The abnormal indication is that the disk shows 0 kB even though the disk activity indicator is on 100% of the time. The list of processes shows Avast (anti-virus program) and System to have overwhelmingly the largest I/O Read Bytes, but this doesn't seem abnormal.

I use the program WhoCrashed to check dump files. Some time ago I used it to cause a deliberate crash to check that dump files were bei... Read more

Hello,I really need some help! My computer had a virus that made the fake Windows XP antivirus popup appear where they want you to download the bogus antispyware program, and the desktop background changed to blue with a message that read " WARNING! Spyware detected on your computer. Please install an antispyware...." Blah, Blah Blah! And it would act like it was restarting and go to a blue screen, but if I pressed F8 it would go back. So I followed some steps I had read on here from other people, and that part of it is gone. I am now able to change my desktop background. Now the problem is that every time I try to go on to the internet, Google or whatever other search engine I use will come up, but then when you try to go to another site, it just says " Loading, internet browser redirecting." And I get redirected to another site, usally ADT (weird) or another antispyware site which I believe is just part of the virus. Also, the computer will freeze up completely to where I can't do ANYTHING. Even CTRL+ALT+Delete doesn't work. So we end up just unplugging it (I know that is probably REALLY bad!) I downloaded spybot S&D from my other computer and put it on the bad one, and it did find a couple things and I deleted them, but it didn't help. So I got hijackthis from my other computer also and dowloaded it to the messed up one and obtained my log. I had to do this in safe mode and allow networking to even get my computer to keep running, so... Read more

My computer, early in boot-up, freezes up randomly, mostly when firefox is used for more than 5 minutes (sometimes even before firefox shows up), and in some boots, Vista won't even open anything, then later freezes,Theres pretty much a 1/50 of a working boot up, but I've been trying since about 3:00 AM EST (posted this at 1:28 PM EST) today after it eventually froze up from printing from Acrobat Reader, with no luck (and even one boot, didn't even show the Compaq splash screen), previously, on working boots, I've done virus scans with Malware Bytes' Pro, with no results, never (this computer only got a virus once).I'm forced to boot in safe mode for the computer to work, im afraid its some sort of virus thats unknown by Malware Bytes', so im posting a HiJack This log (later, when i try to run normal mode again) with my DxDiag (please note, my brother installed a facemoods.com thing on this computer, since i think its spyware, i deleted all the traces of it i spotted). I'm using a unmodified Presario CQ50 209WM on the lastest version of Vista, which had already had one reinstall after getting hacked while a relative was using it.Please hurry i just rented a 3 Day Elite weapon in Battlefield Play4Free yesterday which set me back over 100 games worth of getting credits for.

A:Computer freezes up randomly, mostly when using firefox, some boots, computer refuses to open up programs

First of all, MalwareBytes is not an anti virus app. Do you have an av installed? If so, have you run a full scan with that? If not, and since you think it's malware related, you should probably post in the Am I Infected forum.

Hey all,

I was unable to get GMER to run the full scan without an error popping up halfway saying that the .exe has stopped working. I tried it twice and lost patience so I will try again later and try to make it work. For now I'm just putting this post up there to at least get something by the end of today hopefully, so I just want to point out first that my GMER log is not included. Sorry about it! If the GMER log is absolutely necessary along with Hijack and DDS logs for you guys to diagnose what is wrong with my computer, do let me know. Also, if you guys could, any advice on how to get GMER working would be appreciated. I was unclear through the instructions if I should uncheck the IAT/EAT box and check the C: drive box (the GMER tool did not warn me about rootkit activity, but I went ahead and unchecked IAT/EAT and checked C: drive anyway, assuming that the drive that is most important to scan would be C: drive).

As the title said, my computer freezes during games. When it freezes the screen just stop at the last frame (so no black screen or anything like that) and I can hear the game for about a second before it turns to a low clicking sound. At which point I have to manually shut down the computer and restart it. Nothing else works. Then I get the usual question of how I want to start the computer, I always pick “start normally” and it’s like it never happened.

I think it’s because the GPU is overheating, because that’s the only component that’s really hot. When I check the temp while playing it’s usually building up to about 60C (24-30C on idle) and stays around that number. And it fells really hot when I touch it after it’s happened. The only problem with that theory is that I can play every game out there usually on the best setting (haven’t tried every powerful game out there) and not a single problem with lag or such. Then again, I’ve never had that problem with MW3, and the temp stays around 50C on that. Not to say that the GPU is really that great. It’s average at best, but I’m not a hardcore gamer or anything so figured I didn’t need the best.
I built the computer myself in June 2011. And it went fine without any problems until maybe 6 months ago, not really sure when it happened.

Here’s what I’ve done so far

Ok well, my computer is pretty old, but its not THAT old, it has always worked very well, and all of a sudden one day it froze and i tried turning it off but when i went to press the power button it wouldnt turn off, no matter how many times i pressed the power button. so i had to turn off the power switch in the back of the computer. it did this consistently so i decided to format my computer and delete the partition stuff like that, but it still did it, and i even virus checked and there were no viruses.

my computer freezes out of nowhere at random spots (startup, windows, my desktop, etc) and when i try to turn it off the power button doesnt work so i have to turn it off by turning off the switch at the back of the computer, please help me, i don't know whats going on!

A:URGENT PROBLEM: Computer freezes, but can not turn computer off

Try holding the power switch in for at least 4 seconds. There is a entry in BIOS for instant off and 4 second delay. Yours is probably set to 4 seconds. Delay is good as it prevents accidential power offs from hitting the switch by mistake.

If you are hiolding the switch in and it isn't powering down there are two possibilties. Switch is defective or connector has came off the header.

The hdd light should only light while the disk is being read or written to. It is normal for the hdd light to not be on all the time.

Since you say the system "partially" freezes during a memtest, I would like to understand more about that. Can you post a screenshot of what you are seeing when it's partially frozen?

Have you tried the Lask Known Good Configuration option?

I think it might be a Mozillla issue (damaged), calling for the uninstall/reinstall routine.

OK I am having a HUGE problem with me computer. While I'm working on it in regular mode Windows freezes. I can move the mouse around and the keyboard responds, but when I so to my task bar I just get that circle thing that says it's thinking. If I leave it alone for a few mins, then the whole computer stops responding and I have to do a hard shutdown. I have tried to Google this problem many times but I can't find an answer as to what may be causing it. I thought it might be a virus, but when I try to run and virus scanner, the computer stops in the midsts of it. I can work in Safe Mode with no hangups so I think it might be one of my programs that runs in regular mode. Does anyone know what is going on with my computer? Do you think I should try and reset it to factory settings? Any advice would be grateful seeing as how I am going nuts trying to figure out what's wrong. Thanks for any help you can give me!!!

A:Need help from computer genius - computer freezes

It sounds to me like you have what's called bad sectors on your hard drive. This is physical damage on a hard drive so that when the laptop is trying to access the hard drive it can't see this data due to the damage and crashes.

The only way to be sure is to take the drive out of the machine and run a sector scan using HDTune on the hard drive externally, you could use a boot disk but I'm not familar with the rules, so won't post the name, some forums don't like people using them.

Worst case, your looking at a replacement hard drive. If you need more detailed intructions please PM me.

I have had my computer since 2009. I'm running Vista home premium 64bit. In the past week it started to freeze up shortly after startup. I have done a system restore to a previous configuration that I know worked from about a month ago. I have ran ms security essentials full scan and found nothing. I have changed the msconfig startup to the diag setting to eliminate any unnecessary programs in the startup process. Nothing I have done seems to help and I am stumped.

A:Computer Freezes

Lets see how it works in safe mode
Download and make a full updated scan with malwarebytes
Follow the clean boot procedure (although probably similar to what you did, we cannot take a chance to rule out the true cause)
Report back

Possible causes
Check memory with memtest86
Make sure that you are not over heating.
Try in safe mode; report back if it works properly.
Try a clean boot
Make sure PSU is working properly
If overclocking, restore to original
Test hard drive at company website.

Check back and I will get you some links that you can use for the above

Me Bad!
Almost forgot. Type event viewer, in search (by start button) and look for errors that may show the cause of the problem.
Go into event viewer and look for critical errors relating to the problem

You want to look for critical errors (they have red in the left column ).
When you find them you want to look for critical errors that say app hang, app crash, or anything that relates to the problem.

This seems like a lot, but go slow, ask questiions and you will be up and running

do you get any error message? if your CD rom runs on driver (incase it is not ATAPI compliant), I do suggest that you try reloading the driver for it, lso consider disabling the auto-insert notification, this is under DEVICE MANAGER, then CD ROM, Properties, then remove the check mark.

Ok, so my computer freezes periodically no matter what I'm doing. When it freezes it will not react to any keyboard and mouse controls. Also during the freeze when I click it makes that "bong" noise and if I was browsing when it happened, the top of the browser that's blue when you're on it, turns gray. If it freezes during a game. I can still use my mouse to control things.

I am having a weird problem where my computer will completely freeze, including mouse, and will require a restart. This only happens when I open IE7 and is sporadic. Also, when I use IE7 and it hasn't freezed yet, when I switch to another program, the key do not respond correctly. It seems that an extended key is pressed. If I can type, like in notepad, it will respond with non-supported characters displayed as a block. I can reset the funky key problem by pressing Alt-Ctrl-Delete and then pressing cancel . My computer's hd crashed and this started after a clean install. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Ok so basically the error is this: when I am playing most games my computer crashes. Sometimes the whole screen flickers and I can still here sound but eventually the screen freezes and I eventually get sent the Blue Screen of Death. When my computer is restarted I get an error message popping up on my desktop telling me that I had the "Bluescreen" error and other information. However, sometimes rather than the screen flickering etc... the whole computer will simply freeze and I must hold in the power button to restart and the same erroe will appear and tell me I had a "Bluescreen" error.

I get this error on a variety of games and sometimes when watching video files like movies, dvds etc. The games it happens on are World of Warcraft, most source engine games, Mount and Blade, Men of War and League of Legends. These are just the games that it does the most often though it has done it on most games I own once or twice.

A variety of things have been done to fix it but sadly none have helped. I have tried reinstalling my OS as I used to run Windows Vista and I now run Windows 7 64 bit. I also used to have 8GB of RAM and that was reduced to 4GB but it did not help. My power supply was also recently replaced which did nothing. Drivers have been reinstalled and did not fix it. I also know that this is not an overheating problem as Speedfan tells me the temperature is fine.

I am quite computer illetarate so if you do have any suggestions, could you pleas... Read more

I just got this issue today and i have no idea what cause it this time.
All i did to this computer today was the usual downloading and installed avast IS. next thing i knew, as i was using my computer longer, freezes started to occur. The sequence of the freeze was pretty consistent where i would be palying songs on windows media player and surfing on mozilla and as i would be on say a site like youtube, when it starts loading or palying my media player would freeze followed by mozilla. The way it freezes however is abit intriguing for my media player would stop playing any sound, but the program is still running (im able to pause stop rewind etc etc) and the progress bar would still move. Mozilla however would just go into a (not responding) state and freeze for a minue or so and everything will go back to normal again.

Other things i realized as well is that the computer would still be useable, it would just be mozilla and media players side effect (inclusive of skype) that would freeze. The taskbar would still eb clickable, windows will minimize and maximize, explorer still works, programs like visio technical still work too. I have absolutely no idea what i did :S

if there is any additional info you think i could provide i would be glad to supply them.

The computer am using is a Pesario CQ40

any help is greatly appreciated ]:

Hey. I think the answer to your problem is in the above sentence. Antivirus, when not working correctly, can exhibit the symptoms you speak of. Try uninstalling Avast to see how it goes.

I would recommend that you go here; read and follow the instructions very carefully; then, post all the requested logs and information; as instructed, to here. (Just click on the coloured links.)

Once done, please be patient, as the Security Team Analysts are usually very busy; one of them will answer your request as soon as they can.

Good luck

Hi Porta-Chaves !

Run (start => run) eventvwr.msc /s and see if you find any errors at the times the computer freezes (check the different sections : security, application, system, ...).

You should also test your memory : download and burn memtest86+ iso image on a CD (you'll have to use a burning software that's able to burn .iso files, don't just do it from windows explorer) then boot on the CD : insert the CD, reboot the computer then enter the bios by pressing the del key during startup and change the boot order to CD-rom first. Let memtest run 3 full passes on your memory and report if it finds errors.
It's advised you repeat the operation with windiag as it can find errors overlooked by memtest, and vice-versa. Leave it running for an hour or two.

Install everest or sensorsviewpro to monitor your temperatures, fan speeds and voltages. Check that your computer is not overheating or that your voltages are not fluctuating at the times of the freezes.
Read those guides about using those softwares :

My computer started freezing, after using it for a while or running a lot of programs.

I cleaned the fan coil and made sure the fans are working. It started asking to do a disk check and never finished, until it wouldn't get passed the windows xp loading screen.

I have a windows xp sp3 disk but it doesn't come on until windows loads so I can't repair it.

I checked my hard drive connected to another computer and all my stuff is still there and was able to finish running a disk check and run a virus scan, but when I put it as a master it still freezes before Windows loads.

Is there a way to run the repair disk before windows xp loads or a way to do it as a slave on someone else's computer, or any other suggestions someone might have.

Hello all

My computer is getting old and is slowly falling apart...
I'd love some tips on how to make my system function (at least close to) like it used to...

You see, I have this problem: My computer somtimes freezes up, but in the weirdest way: it totally freezes for 10 seconds, then unfreezes (lets you move or continues playing music) for like 2 secs, then freezes again...
Sometimes, plugging out my ext harddrive makes it stop, but then again sometimes it doesnt...

A couple of minutes ago, my computer rebooted out of nothing and now the 'Internet Explorer' shortcut on my 'Quick Launch'-pannel doesnt work (i use mozilla nyway) and browsing through my folders goes soooo slow... I think there's something wrong with my windows (ie explorer)

So summary:
1. Computer is getting slower
2. Temporary freezes (maybe related to my ext HD)
3. Something worng with my windows

So... any help?

Let me apologize in advance if I have posted this in the wrong forum, and if I am providing insufficient information. However, I am at my wit's ends! For a while now my computer seems to inexplicably freeze for no good reason, and I'm beginning to think it may be a video card or video driver problem. Here's what I've noticed:
- The problem doesn't seem to occur when I'm in safe mode
- It seems to happen most often when I'm actively online (i.e. - downloading or on the net)
- The computer is totally unresponsive (including Ctl+Alt+Del), but the mouse still moves around, the animation on the mouse is active, and the NUM LOCK key on the keyboard works.

I have reinstalled Windows XP Pro a couple of times, but the problem persists. I have an ATI Saphire (RADEON) X300SE video card, an AMD Athlon 64 bit 3000+ (1.8 GH) CPU and 1 Gig of DDR Ram.

Can anyone offer any suggestions? Thanks!

Computer freezes every now and then. I don't know what is the cause of this I thought it was the graphics card but I've formated my computer twice now and tried both new and old drivers for my graphics card so that shouldn't be it right?

It can freeze at what seems like any time really. The little light on the computer that blinks alot starts glowing and just stays that way while nothing happens on my screen.

What could cause this? Probably a number of things with this little information but please tell me what to give you and I will do my best to provide it.
