I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hi all,For several months my PC has been frustratingly slow. However, I have dealt with it. Now however, when I click on "start" my PC will completely freeze, not allowing me to access anything. When closing programs, the desktop slowly scrolls back onto the screen instead of instantly appearing. I wish there was more details to share but there is none to my knowledge. I have recently ran spybot S&D and ran a virus scan but it has not helped. I have followed the instructions on the preparation post and here is the data in the DDS log. I am attaching the other log files as well. Thanks for your help in advance. For the past few weeks, about 1/2 hour after booting my computer up in the morning, whatever program I'm using at the moment will stop responding. If I continue to try to get it to respond, its screen will dim and I get the message "Not responding". The disk activity light goes on 100%. To a certain extent I can still get to other programs that are already running, but I can't open new ones. Usually, if I just sit and wait, after about 30-60 sec everything will be ok again; other times nothing will happen for several minutes after which I'll get a BSOD with the message "Windows was shut down..." and
Collecting data for crash dump ...
Initializing disk for crash dump ...

Because of this, I've been running Process Explorer. When the problem occurs I can switch to it if it's on the second screen of my dual-screen system. When I do so, almost everything seems normal:
CPU 1.5%
System Commit 3.46 GB
Physical Memory 3.0 GB
I/0 2 kB
Network 400 B
Disk 0 kB
The abnormal indication is that the disk shows 0 kB even though the disk activity indicator is on 100% of the time. The list of processes shows Avast (anti-virus program) and System to have overwhelmingly the largest I/O Read Bytes, but this doesn't seem abnormal.

I use the program WhoCrashed to check dump files. Some time ago I used it to cause a deliberate crash to check that dump files were bei... Read more

Hello,I really need some help! My computer had a virus that made the fake Windows XP antivirus popup appear where they want you to download the bogus antispyware program, and the desktop background changed to blue with a message that read " WARNING! Spyware detected on your computer. Please install an antispyware...." Blah, Blah Blah! And it would act like it was restarting and go to a blue screen, but if I pressed F8 it would go back. So I followed some steps I had read on here from other people, and that part of it is gone. I am now able to change my desktop background. Now the problem is that every time I try to go on to the internet, Google or whatever other search engine I use will come up, but then when you try to go to another site, it just says " Loading, internet browser redirecting." And I get redirected to another site, usally ADT (weird) or another antispyware site which I believe is just part of the virus. Also, the computer will freeze up completely to where I can't do ANYTHING. Even CTRL+ALT+Delete doesn't work. So we end up just unplugging it (I know that is probably REALLY bad!) I downloaded spybot S&D from my other computer and put it on the bad one, and it did find a couple things and I deleted them, but it didn't help. So I got hijackthis from my other computer also and dowloaded it to the messed up one and obtained my log. I had to do this in safe mode and allow networking to even get my computer to keep running, so... Read more

My computer, early in boot-up, freezes up randomly, mostly when firefox is used for more than 5 minutes (sometimes even before firefox shows up), and in some boots, Vista won't even open anything, then later freezes,Theres pretty much a 1/50 of a working boot up, but I've been trying since about 3:00 AM EST (posted this at 1:28 PM EST) today after it eventually froze up from printing from Acrobat Reader, with no luck (and even one boot, didn't even show the Compaq splash screen), previously, on working boots, I've done virus scans with Malware Bytes' Pro, with no results, never (this computer only got a virus once).I'm forced to boot in safe mode for the computer to work, im afraid its some sort of virus thats unknown by Malware Bytes', so im posting a HiJack This log (later, when i try to run normal mode again) with my DxDiag (please note, my brother installed a facemoods.com thing on this computer, since i think its spyware, i deleted all the traces of it i spotted). I'm using a unmodified Presario CQ50 209WM on the lastest version of Vista, which had already had one reinstall after getting hacked while a relative was using it.Please hurry i just rented a 3 Day Elite weapon in Battlefield Play4Free yesterday which set me back over 100 games worth of getting credits for.

A:Computer freezes up randomly, mostly when using firefox, some boots, computer refuses to open up programs

First of all, MalwareBytes is not an anti virus app. Do you have an av installed? If so, have you run a full scan with that? If not, and since you think it's malware related, you should probably post in the Am I Infected forum.

Hey all,

I was unable to get GMER to run the full scan without an error popping up halfway saying that the .exe has stopped working. I tried it twice and lost patience so I will try again later and try to make it work. For now I'm just putting this post up there to at least get something by the end of today hopefully, so I just want to point out first that my GMER log is not included. Sorry about it! If the GMER log is absolutely necessary along with Hijack and DDS logs for you guys to diagnose what is wrong with my computer, do let me know. Also, if you guys could, any advice on how to get GMER working would be appreciated. I was unclear through the instructions if I should uncheck the IAT/EAT box and check the C: drive box (the GMER tool did not warn me about rootkit activity, but I went ahead and unchecked IAT/EAT and checked C: drive anyway, assuming that the drive that is most important to scan would be C: drive).

Ok well, my computer is pretty old, but its not THAT old, it has always worked very well, and all of a sudden one day it froze and i tried turning it off but when i went to press the power button it wouldnt turn off, no matter how many times i pressed the power button. so i had to turn off the power switch in the back of the computer. it did this consistently so i decided to format my computer and delete the partition stuff like that, but it still did it, and i even virus checked and there were no viruses.

my computer freezes out of nowhere at random spots (startup, windows, my desktop, etc) and when i try to turn it off the power button doesnt work so i have to turn it off by turning off the switch at the back of the computer, please help me, i don't know whats going on!

A:URGENT PROBLEM: Computer freezes, but can not turn computer off

Try holding the power switch in for at least 4 seconds. There is a entry in BIOS for instant off and 4 second delay. Yours is probably set to 4 seconds. Delay is good as it prevents accidential power offs from hitting the switch by mistake.

If you are hiolding the switch in and it isn't powering down there are two possibilties. Switch is defective or connector has came off the header.

As the title said, my computer freezes during games. When it freezes the screen just stop at the last frame (so no black screen or anything like that) and I can hear the game for about a second before it turns to a low clicking sound. At which point I have to manually shut down the computer and restart it. Nothing else works. Then I get the usual question of how I want to start the computer, I always pick “start normally” and it’s like it never happened.

I think it’s because the GPU is overheating, because that’s the only component that’s really hot. When I check the temp while playing it’s usually building up to about 60C (24-30C on idle) and stays around that number. And it fells really hot when I touch it after it’s happened. The only problem with that theory is that I can play every game out there usually on the best setting (haven’t tried every powerful game out there) and not a single problem with lag or such. Then again, I’ve never had that problem with MW3, and the temp stays around 50C on that. Not to say that the GPU is really that great. It’s average at best, but I’m not a hardcore gamer or anything so figured I didn’t need the best.
I built the computer myself in June 2011. And it went fine without any problems until maybe 6 months ago, not really sure when it happened.

Here’s what I’ve done so far

The hdd light should only light while the disk is being read or written to. It is normal for the hdd light to not be on all the time.

Since you say the system "partially" freezes during a memtest, I would like to understand more about that. Can you post a screenshot of what you are seeing when it's partially frozen?

Have you tried the Lask Known Good Configuration option?

I think it might be a Mozillla issue (damaged), calling for the uninstall/reinstall routine.

OK I am having a HUGE problem with me computer. While I'm working on it in regular mode Windows freezes. I can move the mouse around and the keyboard responds, but when I so to my task bar I just get that circle thing that says it's thinking. If I leave it alone for a few mins, then the whole computer stops responding and I have to do a hard shutdown. I have tried to Google this problem many times but I can't find an answer as to what may be causing it. I thought it might be a virus, but when I try to run and virus scanner, the computer stops in the midsts of it. I can work in Safe Mode with no hangups so I think it might be one of my programs that runs in regular mode. Does anyone know what is going on with my computer? Do you think I should try and reset it to factory settings? Any advice would be grateful seeing as how I am going nuts trying to figure out what's wrong. Thanks for any help you can give me!!!

A:Need help from computer genius - computer freezes

It sounds to me like you have what's called bad sectors on your hard drive. This is physical damage on a hard drive so that when the laptop is trying to access the hard drive it can't see this data due to the damage and crashes.

The only way to be sure is to take the drive out of the machine and run a sector scan using HDTune on the hard drive externally, you could use a boot disk but I'm not familar with the rules, so won't post the name, some forums don't like people using them.

Worst case, your looking at a replacement hard drive. If you need more detailed intructions please PM me.

After I managed to fix my computer due to a memory problem my computer started to freeze when either playing games or watching video. It freezes and sometimes the sound gets messed up and loops. I have to restart to get it to work again. This occurs with near 100% frequencyt after an hour or so of use. It almost never fails to freeze after an hour. It seems to be getting worse since it used to take longer to freeze up and wouldn't always do so.

I suspect it might be my video card. What is strange that I used to get a different video card error with similar frequency but it would not freeze. Instead I would get these multicolored artifacts on screen and it would later return to normal. Usually an error messoge would pop up for my graphics cards saying that it has reset. This would occur no matter what was happening. Actually artifacts would occur most often when viewing images, video, or games. This no longer occurs. Instead it simply freezes. I am not sure if it is related.

I have a HP Pavilion a1250n, 1.5 gigs of RAM, an ATI Radeon x1600 video card, and AMD dual core 3800 processors.

I have an HP Pavilion dv5 computer and for some reason it keeps freezing. I can happen a few minutes into start-up or I can work on it for a while and Windows freezes. I can move the mouse around and the keyboard works but no programs respond. I am hoping that someone can please help me with this problem because I am VERY frustrated!! When it freezes I try control+alt+delete but I get an error message that says Log-in error. I thought that maybe my computer was overheating because I live in a hot country, but even my external fan isn't helping the problem. Also, something else that is weird is that I can use my computer as long as it runs on my battery, if I plug in the A/C power cord it freezes within 5 mins. Does anyone have any ideas what might be happening and how I might be able to fix it. I really don't want to get a new computer if I can help it. Any and all suggestions are VERY much appreciated!! Thanks for the help!
Oh, and it doesn't seem to be a virus because I've run multiple scans and nothing comes up.

Hello everyone. I am new to this list, not very good with computers and desperate for help. The screen on my 3year old computer freezes randomly. I am using XP Professional but this happens in other programmes as well. The ctrl/alt/delete keys do nothing, neither does the mouse or keyboard. I have to reboot in order to get it going again. It will last for a few minutes or half a day and then go again. I have scanned with everything I have ie Norton/adaware/Spysweeper to no avail, also done all the routine housekeeping. I have plent of memory. I have tried starting in Safe Mode and the same happens - but not so frequently.
I am in the middle of writing a family history book so you can imagine my irritation. Can anyone please give me any advise. Thank you

I made a post in the HijackThis! portion of the forum that had a HJT log in it, but the more I see out of this computer, the more I think it isn't related to spyware/adware.

I came home yesterday afternoon to find my computer frozen at the login screen. My sister was logged on, but the screensaver shows the welcome screen after a period of time (like the screensaver goes away, it turns the monitor back on, and the welcome screen pops up; but that's another problem, not worried about it right now though). So the computer was at the welcome screen and frozen solid. CRTL + ALT + DEL failed, so a reset button was my only option.

So it restarted like normal, and just before the welcome screen showed, everything stopped and it froze. I reset again, same result. So I booted into Safe Mode (works every time), ran virus scans, adware scans, etc. Nothing serious showed. So I rebooted. This time it made it to the login screen fine, but to be on the safe side, I tried again. It locked up.

I repeated this procedure to get back to windows normal mode and ran the HJT scan and posted it. I'm still waiting to hear about that. Then I played with it some more, restarting and such, finding it okay. So I booted into normal mode and signed my sister back on. I came back about 40 minutes later to find it frozen again, and reset was only option.

Then this morning (after I'd turned off the thing in frustration), my mom needed to use it to pay a bill. I told her it was a futil... Read more

Computer freezes during virus scan. I had AVG and uninstalled and reinstalled, but freezes about 2 minutes into scan. I uninstalled it again and installed VIPRE but had same issue. Tried running it in safe mode but it also freezes. There is no way to unfreeze except holding in powering button and powering down.

If I try to open multiple windows, usually more than 2, it wont open.

An error message comes up sometimes when trying to from one website to another and when I click on "click here for solution" no solution appears.

My PC started freezing about a week or so ago, no response to CTRL+ALT+DEL, no mouse, nothing. I have to do forced turn off (keep the switch pressed for 4 secs.) or click the reset button.

I'm not sure if this is a software (trojan, worm, malware, etc.) or hardware issue. As my system was extremely stable until a few days ago, I guess it must be a hijack problem. Here's my HJT log:

Welcome to TSF.

Did you by any chance install Kaspersky or AVG a few days ago? You shouldn't have more than one antivirus program on the same computer. They might conflict each other. So uninstall one of them now.

Please print the below instructions or copy them to Notepad.

Run a scan in HijackThis. Check each of the following if they still exist and hit 'Fix Checked' after you checked the last one:

O20 - Winlogon Notify: winmbj32 - winmbj32.dll (file missing)

Restart. Perform an online scan with Internet Explorer at Panda ActiveScan http://www.pandasoftware.com/products/activescan.htm

* Click on 'Scan your PC' button. There should be a popup - if you have a pop-up blocker, make sure it's not blocking it.
* Click 'Check Now' & a pop-up window will appear.
* Enter your Country, State and E-mail Address & click 'Scan Now' - begin downloading Panda's ActiveX controls (8 MB size).
* Begin the scan by selecting My Computer.
* If it finds any malware, it will offer you a report. Ignore any entry it finds (since it wants you to buy the program for removal) as we will address this later.
* Click on see report. Then click Save report.
* Post that log in your next reply along with a new HijackThis log.

Let me apologize in advance if I have posted this in the wrong forum, and if I am providing insufficient information. However, I am at my wit's ends! For a while now my computer seems to inexplicably freeze for no good reason, and I'm beginning to think it may be a video card or video driver problem. Here's what I've noticed:
- The problem doesn't seem to occur when I'm in safe mode
- It seems to happen most often when I'm actively online (i.e. - downloading or on the net)
- The computer is totally unresponsive (including Ctl+Alt+Del), but the mouse still moves around, the animation on the mouse is active, and the NUM LOCK key on the keyboard works.

I have reinstalled Windows XP Pro a couple of times, but the problem persists. I have an ATI Saphire (RADEON) X300SE video card, an AMD Athlon 64 bit 3000+ (1.8 GH) CPU and 1 Gig of DDR Ram.

Can anyone offer any suggestions? Thanks!

As far as I know, Google Earth and Full Tilt Poker are ON the internet. So that is not the problem. Delete your Browsing History in your browser.
If that doesn't work, Uninstall AVG with Revo Uninstaller be sure to use the Advanced method and delete the Registry Files as well. After rebooting, do a search for all AVG files and delete them and empty your Recycle bin. Open your browser and clean out the Browsing History. Once you have internet then try installing AVG again.

A:Computer freezes up

Go to Safe Mode (by repeatively press F8 on Windows startup)

Then do the following:

Please try this:

Manual steps to run Chkdsk from My Computer or Windows Explorer

Open My Computer, and then right-click the hard disk that you want to check.
Click Properties, and then click Tools.
Under Error-checking, click Check Now. A dialog box that shows the Check disk options is displayed
Use one of the following procedures:

? To run Chkdsk in read-only mode, click Start.
? (tick) To repair errors without scanning the volume for bad sectors, select the Automatically fix file system errors check box.
? To repair errors, locate bad sectors, and recover readable information, select the Scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors check box.

Note If one or more of the files on the hard disk are open, you will receive the following message:

The disk check could not be performed because the disk check utility needs exclusive access to some Windows files on the disk. These files can be accessed by restarting Windows. Do you want to schedule the disk check to occur the next time you restart the computer?Click to expand...

Click Yes to schedule the disk check, and then restart your computer to start the disk check.

Wait until Chkdsk finishes Checking / Repairing any faults
Windows will then either restart your computer or continue loading Normally.
