Preferred Solution: Computer freezes up

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hi all,For several months my PC has been frustratingly slow. However, I have dealt with it. Now however, when I click on "start" my PC will completely freeze, not allowing me to access anything. When closing programs, the desktop slowly scrolls back onto the screen instead of instantly appearing. I wish there was more details to share but there is none to my knowledge. I have recently ran spybot S&D and ran a virus scan but it has not helped. I have followed the instructions on the preparation post and here is the data in the DDS log. I am attaching the other log files as well. Thanks for your help in advance. I am experiencing this problem in all browsers, Firefox, IE and Chrome. Functionality to many computer programs will cease to work, shut down and restart do not respond and a hard reboot is necessary. For the past few weeks, about 1/2 hour after booting my computer up in the morning, whatever program I'm using at the moment will stop responding. If I continue to try to get it to respond, its screen will dim and I get the message "Not responding". The disk activity light goes on 100%. To a certain extent I can still get to other programs that are already running, but I can't open new ones. Usually, if I just sit and wait, after about 30-60 sec everything will be ok again; other times nothing will happen for several minutes after which I'll get a BSOD with the message "Windows was shut down..." and
Collecting data for crash dump ...
Initializing disk for crash dump ...

Because of this, I've been running Process Explorer. When the problem occurs I can switch to it if it's on the second screen of my dual-screen system. When I do so, almost everything seems normal:
CPU 1.5%
System Commit 3.46 GB
Physical Memory 3.0 GB
I/0 2 kB
Network 400 B
Disk 0 kB
The abnormal indication is that the disk shows 0 kB even though the disk activity indicator is on 100% of the time. The list of processes shows Avast (anti-virus program) and System to have overwhelmingly the largest I/O Read Bytes, but this doesn't seem abnormal.

I use the program WhoCrashed to check dump files. Some time ago I used it to cause a deliberate crash to check that dump files were bei... Read more

Hello,I really need some help! My computer had a virus that made the fake Windows XP antivirus popup appear where they want you to download the bogus antispyware program, and the desktop background changed to blue with a message that read " WARNING! Spyware detected on your computer. Please install an antispyware...." Blah, Blah Blah! And it would act like it was restarting and go to a blue screen, but if I pressed F8 it would go back. So I followed some steps I had read on here from other people, and that part of it is gone. I am now able to change my desktop background. Now the problem is that every time I try to go on to the internet, Google or whatever other search engine I use will come up, but then when you try to go to another site, it just says " Loading, internet browser redirecting." And I get redirected to another site, usally ADT (weird) or another antispyware site which I believe is just part of the virus. Also, the computer will freeze up completely to where I can't do ANYTHING. Even CTRL+ALT+Delete doesn't work. So we end up just unplugging it (I know that is probably REALLY bad!) I downloaded spybot S&D from my other computer and put it on the bad one, and it did find a couple things and I deleted them, but it didn't help. So I got hijackthis from my other computer also and dowloaded it to the messed up one and obtained my log. I had to do this in safe mode and allow networking to even get my computer to keep running, so... Read more

My computer, early in boot-up, freezes up randomly, mostly when firefox is used for more than 5 minutes (sometimes even before firefox shows up), and in some boots, Vista won't even open anything, then later freezes,Theres pretty much a 1/50 of a working boot up, but I've been trying since about 3:00 AM EST (posted this at 1:28 PM EST) today after it eventually froze up from printing from Acrobat Reader, with no luck (and even one boot, didn't even show the Compaq splash screen), previously, on working boots, I've done virus scans with Malware Bytes' Pro, with no results, never (this computer only got a virus once).I'm forced to boot in safe mode for the computer to work, im afraid its some sort of virus thats unknown by Malware Bytes', so im posting a HiJack This log (later, when i try to run normal mode again) with my DxDiag (please note, my brother installed a facemoods.com thing on this computer, since i think its spyware, i deleted all the traces of it i spotted). I'm using a unmodified Presario CQ50 209WM on the lastest version of Vista, which had already had one reinstall after getting hacked while a relative was using it.Please hurry i just rented a 3 Day Elite weapon in Battlefield Play4Free yesterday which set me back over 100 games worth of getting credits for.

A:Computer freezes up randomly, mostly when using firefox, some boots, computer refuses to open up programs

First of all, MalwareBytes is not an anti virus app. Do you have an av installed? If so, have you run a full scan with that? If not, and since you think it's malware related, you should probably post in the Am I Infected forum.

Hey all,

I was unable to get GMER to run the full scan without an error popping up halfway saying that the .exe has stopped working. I tried it twice and lost patience so I will try again later and try to make it work. For now I'm just putting this post up there to at least get something by the end of today hopefully, so I just want to point out first that my GMER log is not included. Sorry about it! If the GMER log is absolutely necessary along with Hijack and DDS logs for you guys to diagnose what is wrong with my computer, do let me know. Also, if you guys could, any advice on how to get GMER working would be appreciated. I was unclear through the instructions if I should uncheck the IAT/EAT box and check the C: drive box (the GMER tool did not warn me about rootkit activity, but I went ahead and unchecked IAT/EAT and checked C: drive anyway, assuming that the drive that is most important to scan would be C: drive).

As the title said, my computer freezes during games. When it freezes the screen just stop at the last frame (so no black screen or anything like that) and I can hear the game for about a second before it turns to a low clicking sound. At which point I have to manually shut down the computer and restart it. Nothing else works. Then I get the usual question of how I want to start the computer, I always pick “start normally” and it’s like it never happened.

I think it’s because the GPU is overheating, because that’s the only component that’s really hot. When I check the temp while playing it’s usually building up to about 60C (24-30C on idle) and stays around that number. And it fells really hot when I touch it after it’s happened. The only problem with that theory is that I can play every game out there usually on the best setting (haven’t tried every powerful game out there) and not a single problem with lag or such. Then again, I’ve never had that problem with MW3, and the temp stays around 50C on that. Not to say that the GPU is really that great. It’s average at best, but I’m not a hardcore gamer or anything so figured I didn’t need the best.
I built the computer myself in June 2011. And it went fine without any problems until maybe 6 months ago, not really sure when it happened.

Here’s what I’ve done so far

Ok well, my computer is pretty old, but its not THAT old, it has always worked very well, and all of a sudden one day it froze and i tried turning it off but when i went to press the power button it wouldnt turn off, no matter how many times i pressed the power button. so i had to turn off the power switch in the back of the computer. it did this consistently so i decided to format my computer and delete the partition stuff like that, but it still did it, and i even virus checked and there were no viruses.

my computer freezes out of nowhere at random spots (startup, windows, my desktop, etc) and when i try to turn it off the power button doesnt work so i have to turn it off by turning off the switch at the back of the computer, please help me, i don't know whats going on!

A:URGENT PROBLEM: Computer freezes, but can not turn computer off

Try holding the power switch in for at least 4 seconds. There is a entry in BIOS for instant off and 4 second delay. Yours is probably set to 4 seconds. Delay is good as it prevents accidential power offs from hitting the switch by mistake.

If you are hiolding the switch in and it isn't powering down there are two possibilties. Switch is defective or connector has came off the header.

Since you say the system "partially" freezes during a memtest, I would like to understand more about that. Can you post a screenshot of what you are seeing when it's partially frozen?

Hi!Hope I am posting at the right place. I am really panicking and don't know what to do. I just got my computer for a few days. At first, everything seems alright, and all of a sudden I can't turn off my computer properly. My computer freezes up when I try to "turn off" my computer, or to "log off", but I can't switch user properly. Currently, I have Norton Antivirus installed, Spyguard, and Spyblaster. However, whenever, I try to update definitions for Spyguard, my computer freezes as well. I tried to download spybot, and my computer freezes again when I am downloading new definitions.Below is a copy of my Hijack this log: Thank you !Logfile of HijackThis v1.99.1Scan saved at 2:15:36 PM, on 9/24/2005Platform: Windows XP SP2 (WinNT 5.01.2600)MSIE: Internet Explorer v6.00 SP2 (6.00.2900.2180)Running processes:C:\WINDOWS\System32\smss.exeC:\WINDOWS\system32\winlogon.exeC:\WINDOWS\system32\services.exeC:\WINDOWS\system32\lsass.exeC:\WINDOWS\system32\svchost.exeC:\WINDOWS\System32\svchost.exeC:\Program Files\Intel\Wireless\Bin\EvtEng.exeC:\Program Files\Intel\Wireless\Bin\S24EvMon.exeC:\Program Files\Common Files\Symantec Shared\ccProxy.exeC:\Program Files\Common Files\Symantec Shared\ccSetMgr.exeC:\Program Files\Norton Internet Security\ISSVC.exeC:... A:computer freezes and unable to turnoff computer

Hello dolphin1349 and welcome to the BC HijackThis forum. I do not see any problems with viruses or malware at this time. The HijackThis log is clean.

It sounds more like a configuration or ISP issue. I would suggest posting a question in the Windows XP forum or the Internet Browising forum and see what they have to say.

Cheers.

Have you tried the Lask Known Good Configuration option?

I think it might be a Mozillla issue (damaged), calling for the uninstall/reinstall routine.

Hello,
OK I am having a HUGE problem with me computer. While I'm working on it in regular mode Windows freezes. I can move the mouse around and the keyboard responds, but when I so to my task bar I just get that circle thing that says it's thinking. If I leave it alone for a few mins, then the whole computer stops responding and I have to do a hard shutdown. I have tried to Google this problem many times but I can't find an answer as to what may be causing it. I thought it might be a virus, but when I try to run and virus scanner, the computer stops in the midsts of it. I can work in Safe Mode with no hangups so I think it might be one of my programs that runs in regular mode. Does anyone know what is going on with my computer? Do you think I should try and reset it to factory settings? Any advice would be grateful seeing as how I am going nuts trying to figure out what's wrong. Thanks for any help you can give me!!!

A:Need help from computer genius - computer freezes

It sounds to me like you have what's called bad sectors on your hard drive. This is physical damage on a hard drive so that when the laptop is trying to access the hard drive it can't see this data due to the damage and crashes.

The only way to be sure is to take the drive out of the machine and run a sector scan using HDTune on the hard drive externally, you could use a boot disk but I'm not familar with the rules, so won't post the name, some forums don't like people using them.

Worst case, your looking at a replacement hard drive. If you need more detailed intructions please PM me.

Hi,

I have a problem with my computer freezing. I am using the Windows XP. The freezing occurs kind of randomly, but when it occurs, I have to push the power button on my computer to shut everything down. There is no error message, everything just stops.

I think it is related to programs that display graphics. It seems to freeze very often, or much more quickly if I am playing a video game. For example, I purchased the Sims video game, and the computer would usually freeze within 10 minutes always of starting this program. If I don't play a video game, then the computer may or may not just freeze randomly (but it usually doesn't freeze for hours in this case). After a freeze from the video game, the computer freezes once or twice during startup before I can get a startup that lets me do things again. I have noticed the last couple of times I started up after freezing, the screen goes black just after I can see the desktop and when I click the mouse, the screen comes back and the resolution has been reset to the lowest possible setting, even though I did not reset it myself.

I have tried scanning for viruses with the AVG Free program. I have tried scanning for spyware with Lavasoft's Ad-Aware. I have tried scanning my computer for errors with a program called CCleaner. I have tried Defragmentation. I have tried turning off every other process in Task Manager except essential system processes. As a last resort, I did the Destructive System Restoration where ... For example, when she presses reply to an email it goes to the log in screen. I have noticed the cursor jump around as if i pressed the TAB key but to random places on the screen. It has jumped around twice since I started to write this thread. She did have a virus before from an spoofed email which crashed the computer after opening it. I cant find it in any of the quarantines though. Supposedly the guys at Staples took care of it but she is still having some problems. The computer starts up fine and is running pretty decent now for a couple hours.

Hello.. i was wondering if anyone can help me with a problem that has been a real pain the last several days, my compter keeps freezing up A LOT each time i try to work on windows.
It frezees up when i try to install something (anything), when i open a video or something similar, and lately even when windows starts, it does not even make it to the user logon screen. The funny thing is that when i boot up in Safe Mode everything works just fine, i work for hours and nothing happens. The one thing i notice is that when i boot up in safe mode the video card drivers dont seem to load, so this has brought to a conclussion that it can be the vid card. But im not sure, any help you can give me would be really aprreciated. THX

My PC has:
P4 3.6 Ghz Processor
VIA 8237 Motherboard Aud/LAN/Modm Integrated
Vid Card is a ATI Radeon 9200
1 GB Ram

Thx in advance!

A:Computer Freezes

Has nothing to do with it. Safe Mode is specifically designed to not load the video card drivers. It loads standard VGA drivers. In fact, you will also find that your hard drive is slow (because standard BIOS drivers are loaded), any advanced mouse or keyboard abilities don't work (because standard mouse and keyboard drivers are loaded), etc.... That's why it's called Safe Mode.

Start by disabling unnecessary services and programs. Check the Event Log. Look at what's being loaded using the Task Manager.

Bottom line: It's impossible for anyone on this forum to diagnose your problem without a lot of specific information. We can only give you advice on where to look.

I recently had to rebuild my BF's PC after he dropped tea all over it. (I built it 4 months earlier)
After the Incident displays wouldn't work replacing the PSU and motherboard fixed that so now it starts. One beep at the beginning and then a few seconds into running it freezes I can not enter bios and if I do somehow manage it it freezes.
I have tried one ram at a time, removing bits at a time, rebuilding, cmos jumping (?) Taking the battery out and even replacing with the old one since this was the same board I didn't think it would matter.
I have spent hours trying to fix it now and now joy just when I think it's working freeze time.
I have tried unplugging all externals, tried to get it to boot from cd but it still freezes. What am I missing?

If it was running at the time of spill I wouldn't have high hopes for that MB. If that tea had sugar, cream or lemon in it, it could be even worse. I repaired couple of laptops by taking out MB, washing it with distilled water and alcohol mixture using a soft paint brush and let them dry in the sun for couple of days. Since you did everything else, there's nothing to loose trying that.
