I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Please Help! I ran the Lenovo BIOS Upgrade for Thinkpad E540 for Windows 7; it didn?t work. (?Failure to Read BIOS?) So I downloaded the ISO version, and burned it to a CD. My laptop boots up ONLY from the CD. Now exactly what do I do now, in simple instructions, to upgrade from the ISO CD to the new updated BIOS so that it would be on my laptop (instead of having to boot from the CD every time)? Thanks!

A:How do I Lenovo BIOS Upgrade for Thinkpad E540 for Windows 7 from ISO CD?

Welcome to the forum!

If you boot from the CD (and the ISO was correctly burned on the CD), you only need to follow the instructions on the screen. If I remember correctly you need to press Enter once, (eventually confirm by pressing the "Y" key) and then the BIOS will be updated. After that you can remove the CD and boot normally.

You need to be connected to the AC and have a full charged battery before the update.

Hope this helps...

I bought an E540 for my wife many years ago. She didn't really get the hang of it so it was put into a cupboard and has collected dust for many years. My kids are getting to the age where they can start to use a computer so I want to get it going again. I have found the cable and powered it up, but the password is locked and my wife cannot remember it! I have tried re-booting from the partition at start-up using F11, but it does not work. This machine is running Windows 8 and was only used for a very brief period before it was abandoned. No one has ever re-installed anything or otherwise fiddled with the operating system.  As far as I can see, we have none of the original software or accessories that came with it, other than the power cord  Any thoughts on how I might be able to get it going would be greatly appreciated.

HelloI have a thinkpad e540, bios J9ET92WW 2.12  with a 1TB Hdd.I want a additional ssd and boot from it.Is this possible? Any clues wwith this?Thank you

A:Thinkpad e540 is it possible to ad a m2.2242 ssd and boot from it

I don't have one to try, but there is a slot for a WWAN card or a 2242 M.2 SSD that is easy to access.  Remove the big cover and it is visible.  If you lay the machine down with the memory slots and the HDD toward you, it is above the HDD, to the left of the CPU.  The other thinkpads of that generation (T440, T540, W540) will all boot fine from the drive.

I did the bios upgrade to version 2.23, now I cannot sleep, hibernate or shutdown my laptop. All these actions just result in it rebooting. I tried to rollback, disabled the rollback protection and flashed the old bios firmware but it doesn't seem to be sticking. It still shows 2.23 as the version despite the bios firmware flash completing successfully. Suffice to say this is very very inconvenient.

Hello. I would like to resolve my problem with my E540 with OneLink Dock Pro.  When dock is connected to my notebook and I press power button, backlight of display lights up, but display stays black, no lenovo logo, nothing... Sometimes it shows logo but it freezes on this logo too. When I disconnect dock, notebook boots up normally. I tryed to disconnect monitor, keyboard and mouse from dock too, but it has no effect. This "freezing" seems to be happening only when dock is connected. On charger notebook boots up normally. And last note, this is happening only on "cold" start, restart works normaly. Problems started just after flashing new firmware to dock (v. 2.30) and BIOS update (v. 2.23). I do not know what made this problems, because I was doing these updates together. Thanks for any answer...

When the set's BIOS graphics NVIDIA does not remember the time. Other values remain set.Can you handle it?Thank you.

Hi,I am shopping for a new laptop and am looking at the E440, E540, T440, and T440s. I would like to know the maximum RAM that can be installed in the E440 and E540. I can't find this information anywhere. Also, this is called the "E Series" on the website, but here it says "Edge". I assume this is the same thing?  I also went to Crucial.com to look at memory and see how much the maximum was, but they do not show the E Series, only the Edge. Thanks,Kkb

Hi,

Welcome to Lenovo Community Forums!

The maximum memory that can be installed in a Lenovo ThinkPad E440 and E540 is 16GB.
The E stands for Edge series.

I am having problems with a Lenovo ThinkPad E540 and the Synaptic Touchpad driver in Windows 10 64 Bit. What is happening is the cursor is showing with a vertical scroll rather than just the standard windows arrorw and I am unable to remove it. I have tried a number of different drivers 19.0.17.2, but this just auto updates to 19.0.17.27. I have also downloaded the recommended driver from the Lenovo Support website which is version, 19.0.10.0 and again it updates to 19.0.17.27. I have managed to leave the laptop with just 19.0.17.2 installed and stop the 19.0.17.27 from downloading via windows update, but this only lasted a few weeks and I had the same issue. I have also uninstalled Synaptic software and remove it from device manager, however after rebooting it installs again. Can anyone help and supply solution to this annoying mouse issue?

hey guys - I bought a laptop second hand that came pre-installed witn win 7. Without testing it on win 7 - i made the immediate reformat to upgrade to win 10 home (since the laptop alrdy carried a valied win 7 home license. I wasn't sure if that entitled me to a win 10 pro but was pretty sure it would at least be legit for a win 10 home license but that's not the issue. Upon a full reformat - in which i upgraded the HDD to an SSD in the 2.5 inch bay - i proceeeded to install the typical drivers required and also update the bios the the latest version (which was last updated in 2016) C'mon I am typing this on an X220 which has no official win10 support yet i have the latest Spectre/Meltdown Patch that was released Apr 2018! Anyway - my first test was to conduct a number a benchmark tests to see how the gpu performs. This included 3DMark and aslo the standard Passmark benchmarks (all free versions) I started with the Passmark only to have a message come up from windows saying "Passmark has been denied acces to utilise dGPU" this is not the exact wordings but it conveys the message. I checked the bios and there were only 2 options which was either use - 1)igpu only2)Optmus dGpu It had Optimus selected by default which made sense.  I then proceeded to manual enable the dGPU via the Nvidia control panel in the Physix section and it is then I noticed the screen was displaying frayed/glitchy images - which was not very obvious u... I just got an E540 and upon a Windows install, after updating the AHCI driver, the screen glitches out (crazy colors, lines, etc) and the system locks up. After a reboot, during Windows startup, the screen glitches out again and it completely powers off. System restore removes the driver and restores the ability to boot.
I've installed the driver from both Lenovo and a newer one from Intel and get the same result.
Windows has the driver already and I'm not opposed to leaving it the way it is, I'm just really wondering about this issue and would like to eventually update.
This happens on both Windows 7 and Windows 10, by the way.

Thanks in advance!

-Randy

Apologies if this is reprising and earlier question on this topic. I have recently acquired an old-ish second-hand ThinkPad X230 [2325SWK build with a G2ET91WW (2.51) BIOS], accompanied by a ThinkPad UltraBase Series 3 docking station [P/N 0B67692] which has an empty 2" bay.I need advice on the following issues:1    The X230 currently has an SSD installed [Samsung 128GB MZ7TD128HAFV-000L1] which will not be large enough for the programs and program data that I have planned to install.  I would like to upgrade to a 1 1TB SSD, and I propose to clone the contents of the existing 128 GB drive to a 1 TB Samsung 850 Evo [MZ-75E1T0B].  Are there any SATA or other firmware issues that I should be aware of before acquiring the 1 TB drive, arranging for its cloning and for the replacement of the current 128 GB drive?2    I would like to populate the empty 2" bay on the UltraBase Series 3 docking station with an HDD, and the model I have in mind is a 2 TB Seagate BarraCuda Hard Drive [ST2000LM015].  Again, I'd like to know if there are any hardware, firmware or other issues before acquisition and installation.I'd be grateful for any help on either of these two issues in an Australian context.

Is there a solution for this. I faced the issue last week; and 30 minutes ago. Now it is fine. Not sure when this will fail. I would like to know if there is a solution for this. Been two years. After a couple months of flawless use, I'm having trouble with my display on this old model.

For a day or so, the display would go dark at random times, requiring a restart, after which it was fine for awhile.

Now it has gone out completely.

The funny thing is is that it's not "completely" out. I can still make out, but just barely, the display. It's too dark to read or navigate, but I can tell the desktop is there somewhere.

I've plugged an external monitor into it and it has worked fine.

I'm hoping it's a simple fix. The battery is very old and won't charge over 15%, and if that is the problem I'll be glad, but this is with it plugged into the ac adapter.

Any thoughts?

Thanks!

Hey everyone,
I recently ran into the issue that the backlight on my Lenovo Thinkpad W520 for the display wont light up ( i took the LCD and shined a flashlight behind it to ensure that it was being digitized which it was). It worked fine one day until I turned on the laptop and the screen was black. I have reseated all the RAM, bought new cables for the display, a new inverter for the display, and even a new screen. I have unplugged the CMOS battery to reset the BIOS, and tried holding the power button for long amounts of time with the battery and power cord disconnected. Holding the power button down and restarting fixed my Thinkpad T410 when the same issue happened 3 times before, but it wont fix this issue. All of this never happened on the T410 for the 2 years I had Windows 7 on it but now both machines run Windows 10 Pro. I removed the hard drive from the W520 just in case it was a problem with the drive. Also I am testing the screen with the laptop display assembly disassembled. Please help, I am lost as to what I can do.

I have an old ThinkPad T500 that I was planning to give to my younger brother so he can do school work.  Running Windows Vista Ultimate.  A few months back, the internal display was acting intermittently, meaning it would not display anything (dark screen) but if you connected an external monitor, it would work fine.  After a second or third reboot, the internal display would come on. This morning I turned it on and the monitor had parallel color lines in various patterns.  I can hear the laptop running and booting up.   After a couple of minutes, I plugged in an external monitor - nothing.  I rebooted the machine and the same color pattern was displaying on the internal display.  This time, the external monitor came on and booted up in 800 x 600 mode.  When I went into Device Manager > Display it shows "Standard VGA Adapter".  I recall that this laptop comes with switchable graphics between the Intel GMA 4500MHD and ATI Mobility Radeon HD 3650 (256 MB).  Is the video card bad or is it just the actual display?

I don't remember by heart the BIOS settings in the T500, but please try going to the BIOS (press F1 right after turning on the laptop) and go to "Config" and "Display", select only the integrated graph, save and reboot.  Keep us posted how it goes...

Hopefully that would fix the screen problems...

I was told that the display on a laptop is very fragil, and that you should never, NEVER touch it with anything. What is a safe way of cleaning the TFT display? I work in a pretty dusty environment and the TFT is developing a "crust" which I want to remove before it gets any worse. Any ideas out there?
