Internet Access + Network Access drops for 10 seconds at random times

Q: Internet Access + Network Access drops for 10 seconds at random times

Hi, we have a bunch of computers(70 aprox) connected to a domain. Since couple weeks ago very strange issues started occuring, internet and network access(path to network share is lost) would come up at random times and on different machines and would last for about 10-20 seconds it would re-connect again.
All the computers are using private addresses.

Most machines are windows 7, some are xp.

Using Windows server 2003 as dc.

Since the occurance is so random it's very hard to pin point the cause, hopefully someone has come accross this issue in the past.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I have a problem where out of nowhere, the internet goes out, i cant even access the 192.168.1.1, my router address. the thing is, that my macbook that's connected to the router wirelessly, never loses connection, when my desktop that's wired loses connection, the macbook is still fine...

virus scan found a trojan yesterday, but i deleted the files that Active Virus Shield found.
after doing a scan today, i found none on the virus scan.

A:Random internet drops, can't even access router sometimes.

You have a variant of the SDbot virus showing in your log. Even though the Virus has been identified and can be killed, because of it's backdoor functionality, there is no way to be sure what information has been stolen from your system. If you do any banking or have recently paid for goods or services online you will need to change all passwords where applicable and it would be wise to contact your bank or credit card company to inform them of your situation. This also applies to passwords for any confidential sites you use such as Paypal, Ebay, Email etc... The infection you have has the ability to download and execute files, log keystrokes, Redirect connections, Sniff sent packets for information & Steal personal information so it is a very serious threat.

Should you have any questions, please feel free to ask.

Download SDFix and save it to your Desktop.

Double click SDFix.exe and it will extract the files to %systemdrive%
(Drive that contains the Windows Directory, typically C:\SDFix)

Please then reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following :Restart your computer
After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, tap the F8 key continually;
Instead of Windows loading as normal, the Advanced Options Menu should appear;
Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode, then press Enter.
Choose your usual account.

Hi

I'm currently running Windows XP Home Edition with Service Pack 3.

Currently using firefox 3.5.5. On random occasions ,random pages will randomly not load with the loading circle spinning but nothing happening. When I click refresh, the page might load or might not. Sometimes i have to end up closing the browser and that seems to fix the problem for some time. The problem will randomly occur again shortly after.

For Msn, i have version Windows live Messenger 2009. On random occasions, i will not receive or my messages will not be sent out. The problem will go away and come back consistently.

I have shaw high speed internet directly connected to the modem. I tried calling them and letting them take a look into my computer through the internet. When they were searching theought, the problem did not occur at that moment, therefor i couldn't not prove that i have a problem.

I tried scanning my computer with Avira AntiVir Personal- Free version and Malwarebytes' Anit-Malware Free version all uptodate, but nothing gets picked up.

This problem started to occur 2-3 weeks ago, and i could not occur what i did during that time.

Thanks for your time.

Hi there. First off thank you very much for taking the time to read this! I have an Acer Aspire 5560 laptop. A month or so ago I started having the occassional problem with Blue Screens. There does not seem to be a specific time in which they come up it just seems to happen randomly. As of late it has been happening much more frequently. Also, though my menu bar says I have wireless access I constantly get the "Can not connect to a network" error message. I cannot click on the view networks options from the menu bar or from the control panel even though every other option in the control panel works fine. I have tried troubleshooting my internet connectiong and nothing ever comes up. I am using Google Chrome. I am currently running my laptop on safemode with networking in order to post on this site. Thank you very much for the help!!

If you are running the ZoneAlarm Anti-Virus program then having MSE running at the same time could be the problem as two Anti-Virus programs can and do mess up a lot of your computers functions. Use one or the other and uninstall the one you don't want and see how it goes.

OS: Windows 7
Hardware: Sony VAIO
Powered by: AC
History: The computer is about 2 years old and the symptoms described below started either abruptly or gradually some 2-3 months ago.

Symptoms: The network access icon in the right of my task bar will show 4-5 bars of signal strength. I'll leave the computer for several hours and when I come back, it shows 0 bars with a red x over it. I click it, select troubleshoot and the Windows Network Diagnostics window pops up and says "Problems found"; A network cable is not properly plugged in or may be broken" - Detected; "Problem with wireless adapter or access point" - Fixed, upon which the icon goes back to 4 or 5 bars and I resume my network connectivity. This takes all of one minute or less.

However, if I need to do a lengthy download, this unexpected action will stop the download in the middle of the night.

TROUBLESHOOTING STEPS:
1) I tried a side-by-side comparison with another laptop and the Sony VAIO lost the network connection in the manner described above while the other computer didn't.
2) I went to Manage Wireless Networks, removed all networks (including my home network) and then rebuilt the wireless networks by re-entering my home network. I was then able to access my network. However, the wireless network adapter still shut off in the middle of the night.
3) I went to Power Settings/Change advanced power settings/Advanced settings/Wireless Adapter Settings/Power Saving Mode and obse... Read more

This might help - the following commands restore Windows IP and Winsock to known good values

Open an Elevated Command Prompt

   Tip
Standard keyboard shortcuts for Copy (Ctrl-C) and Paste (Ctrl-V) shortcuts do not work in Command Prompt.

Enabling the Quick Edit Mode in Command Prompt makes Copy and Paste operations easier.
See step 4 in Command Prompt - Copy to Clipboard to enable it.

Copy in Command Prompt: hightlight the text you want to copy, then press ENTER.
Paste in Command Prompt: right click with your mouse.

In the elevated command Prompt window type the following commands
Alternatively, you can copy the commands, one line at a time and paste it in the Command Prompt Window

ipconfig /release
ipconfig /renew
ipconfig /flushdns
netsh winsock reset all
netsh int ipv4 reset all
netsh int ipv6 reset all

weve got a small network at work, an 8 port linksys router, dsl serivce through a local provider. it seems as though we get dropped alot. at first it was always out in the AM. the provider wouldnt help much, we replaced the router (netgear) with the new linksys one and the dsl provider installed a new modem. things seemed ok for a while. now, it seems as though it drops out everyday at about 6PM, worked today up to 5:48, then at 6-6:20 it wouldnt work. heres what we have to do each and everytime.
we just open the router (192.168.1.1) right on the front page we make absolutely NO changes, just hit the save changes button at the bottom and TADA!! it works for another day.
do i have some communication problem? the service tech that the dsl provider sent out said somethng about putting out id and password into the modem not the router, but didnt leave any info on this.

BTW, were set up as PPPoe and need that pass and id to get access, Linksys provided the setup and it seems to work besides that.

any guesses???

thanks

Linksys products are great IMO. I would bet it is a problem with your ISP. Try hooking the modem up directly to a computer, run the internet connection wizard, and see if it loses connection.

Hi.

I've posted about this problem before but haven't had any luck in getting it solved.

Basically, every now and again my computer will BSOD. It seems to be random as I have never found a common trigger.

Although not happening as much as of late, after the BSOD, when booting back up, it seems as though my SSD with Windows installed on is not recognised. After a reboot, this has always been fixed.

I also find that at times, one of my drives is slow to access; I can actually hear it click in and then I can access things on it. People have said that this drive is failing, but it has been doing it for months and I have checked with various pieces of software to find that it is healthy.

My spec is:

CPU: i7 2600K @ 3.4 GHz
16GB RAM
GPU: Radeon HD 6900
MOBO: Gigabyte Z68A-D3H-B3

I've also attached details from the SF diag tool.

Cheers,

Eliot

A:Random BSOD - HDD also takes a while to access at times

Hi mynameiseliot.

The zip you uploaded does not contain any crash dump.

Follow it: Dump Files - Configure Windows to Create on BSOD
Go to Option Two, Point 2. Download the .reg file and merge it in registry by double clicking it.

Now wait for another BSOD. When it occurred, search the .dmp files manually in the default path: C:\Windows\Minidump or %SystemRoot%\Minidump. See if the crash dump is recorded or not (hopefully it will be recorded).Post it following the Blue Screen of Death (BSOD) Posting Instructions.

Also, make it sure that the OCZ-VERTEX3 SSD is running with the up-to date firmware.

Hello,

I know this is a long shot. I'm staying in what's basically a hotel for the next couple months. I was on their free wireless networks up until a couple of days ago, when it just cut off my internet access all of a sudden.

They have confirmed it's nothing on their end. My roommates have had steady access on their computers no problem, my iPhone as well.

I obviously have no access to their modem, to make issues more difficult, when I right-click any of the network connections, a dialog box will appear, but all the menu options are blank. I can't do anything to the connections except rename them. Anything else yields a message box with no message.

if there's any other way to access the TCP/IP properties that would be great. Right-clicking the connection and clicking properties is the only way I know of.

I have tried winsock repair, uninstalling/reinstalling wireless driver, and just about everything else I could think of.

ipconfig /all gives me the following output:

Hi All,
I have established a Virtual Wifi Miniport and would like to share my laptops internet via the Miniport. Whenever I connect my android phone with this access point, it works perfectly for a few minutes and then all of a sudden there is no internet on the phone. The phone remains connected to the laptop hotspot but the internet access is no more there. Now at this point if I disconnect the connection between my phone and the hotspot and then again try to reconnect back again, it wont even connect. The phone will keep on searching and shows connecting status but can never connect. I have tried all sorts of softwares connectify, virtual router, intel mywifi and even tried to create a hotspot from the cmd using netsh command. All the hotspots work in the exact same way intially works perfect but maybe after half an hour internet is gone. I have completed all the steps properly even changed the settings in the laptop adapter with interet access to allow other networks to connect but nothing seems to work. I have a Windows 7 Machine and my wireless adapter is Intel(R) Centrino(R) Wireless N-100 and the drivers are up to date according to windows. I know that its a problem with my laptop/OS or something because my android phone can connect and remain connected( without losing internet ) to the connectify hotspot in my wifi enabled desktop PC.I am breaking my head over this for the past 15 days even formatted my system once but no use. Please help if you can..please!

It's difficult if not impossible to nail this reoccurring problem down to any one thing as there are many possible causes and solutions.

Many of the solutions are covered in the link below, the comments show many other possible solutions that may help. I would read them all carefully and see if one of the solutions applies in your case.

I tried to find a relevant thread but no luck..

I have a small network at home that consists of 2 laptops in the same workgroup accessing the cable modem/gateway wirelessly and 1 desktop in a different workgroup accessing via ethernet cable.

The laptops have printer and file sharing enabled so that my wife and I can share files....duh

My daughter uses the desktop exclusively and I want her to have internet connectivity (which she currently does) but I don't want her having any access to the laptops.

Will this setup prevent infection of the other 2 machines if she gets a virus/spyware or otherwise downloads something unsavory?

I don't know if it matters but we also have a network printer with a static IP that we all can access.

Thank you for your help

I am running Win 8.0 with the StartIsBack overlay and a wireless Motorola SBG6580 Wireless Cable Modem Gateway. I am 12 feet from the gateway and usually have 4 bars in signal strength but as I use the internet I drop to 3 bars and my web pages don't update. Within 1 minute after that I get No Internet Access on my wireless. I disconnect and reconnect and everything is good again for about 3 to 5 minutes then it happens again. If I reboot the gateway all seems good for a longer time. My wife runs Win 7.0 and does not have any problems. I am running a secure WEP wireless. My next door neighbor has an unsecured Motorola SB6800 gateway that I can connect to and am not dropped ever. If I connect an Ethernet cable to the gateway it works great. I am betting this must be a config problem in my laptop (Dell inspiron X14) - anybody have any solution to this?

A:Win 8 /Motorola gateway drops internet access frequently

The SB6580 is notorious for wifi drops. You are better off getting a SB6141, a wired router like the TP-Link TL-R600VPN, and an Access Point. I use the Engenius ECB-350 with no issues.

When your provider loads their firmware on the SB6580. There is something in there that causes wifi to become very poor in stability.

Hi All,

I've got an older Acer Timeline 4810t running Windows 7. We recently switched from Cox Cable internet to AT&T U-Verse, and I've started noticing that my internet connection will randomly go out when I am connected. This occurs whether I am on a wired or wireless connection. Specifically, I will be browsing the web and, randomly, when I try to pull up a website, I get an error indicating that I cannot connect to that website because I am not connected to the internet. When I check the status of my connection in the bottom right corner, it will show that I am connected to the internet. If I disconnect the ethernet cable (or disconnect and reconnect to the wifi network), the internet service is restored, although it continues to randomly lose connection.

I initially thought that it was a U-Verse issue, so AT&T came out and replaced the router. Unfortunately, I still got the random drops. I then thought it was a Windows issue, so I reformatted by hard drive and reinstalled Windows - still having that issue.

My wife has an older Macbook and does not have this problem. We also do not have this problem with any of the tablets or phones that connect to the network wirelessly.

I am beyond frustrated and do not know what to do. I also don't know if this is a sign that my laptop is at the end of its life, which would be unfortunate since I've only owned the laptop for about 3 years (my last laptop, a Dell, is on year 7 and still churning).

A:Internet Access Randomly Drops on Wired & Wireless Connection

Forgot to mention that I've got an Intel 5100 wifi card and an Atheros ethernet controller.

After further research, it may appear that the wifi disonnection issue is a known issue regarding this wifi card (Intel WiFi Link 5100 AGN problem - disconnecting). Just weird because I only recently had this problem pop up; this also does not explain why my wired connection randomly drops.

I'll play around with the router, driver and the settings some more tonight to see if I can figure out what's wrong.

I've tried calling my ISP and the Netgear tech support (the maker of my router) and after a gruelling bout of them telling me step by step to assign a static ip address, change some settings and etc. they both told me there was nothing more they could do for me.

My indicators in the system tray will show full signal, and my router shows up in the available wireless connections list, yet I cannot connect to anything. This is what I have when the connection is working:

Hello all,

First of all, I am very computer and Windows 7 savvy, but this issue has me stumped. My normal inclination is to just clean install, but I really would like to figure out what is going on.

My system's Internet seems to just stop working after some time, ranging from a few hours to a day. Rebooting normally fixes it. Sometimes it slowly stops working by sometimes not connecting to hosts or sometimes sites will load but images will not. It's very strange.

I have disabled Windows Firewall and don't run anything else. Background tasks are at a bare minimum, and Spybot, Windows Defender, MalwareBytes, and Super Anti-Spyware all report the system is clean.

The HOSTS file is also clean.

I have also set up the NIC to use OpenDNS.

When Internet dies, in Google Chrome 14, IE 9, or Firefox 6, the browser will give me a "cannot connect" page, but in Command Prompt, I can ping both the domain name, or the IP address successfully. I can also successfully perform a traceroute on the domain, but back to the browser, it will continue to give me "can't connect" messages. Since I can ping the domain, it doesn't seem like DNS issues. Because all browsers do it, it doesn't seem like a browser cache issue (I have cleared them).

Sometimes, I can keep hitting F5 to refresh and after a dozen or so attempts, the page will load, but the next attempt will not.

I don't think it is an ISP issue because it will happen on this system connected to an... Read more

Seemingly a pointless thing granted, but would save unplugging and walking off with the router to prevent younger brother spending entire night on bebo.
Looking for a program that prevents a computer accessing a wireless network outside of set times, say 10pm to 8am connection is not possible. Couldnt make windows do this, or find anything on download.com, so google found this site. Im hoping someones got a suggestion.

Im unsure of its relevance, but all PC's running windows XP with various processor speeds, from 450Mhz to 1.7Ghz. Connecting through a 3com router.

p.s. program would need to have a password built into it as far as i know

Thanks in advance

Hi guys,

I recently had a Trojan Malware virus on my desktop. I successfully removed it using some other forums help, however now I can't access my internet at all or if I can it times out after 5 mins. I have done the following already:

In Command Prompt window, type in following commands, and hit Enter after each one:
ipconfig /flushdns
ipconfig /registerdns
ipconfig /release
ipconfig /renew
net stop "dns client"
net start "dns client"

netsh int ip reset reset.log
Hit Enter.
Type in:
netsh winsock reset catalog
Hit Enter.

When I ping 127.0.0.1 it came successful...but I'm not sure what to do. My laptop can connect but my desktop can't.

I have a question, I am setting up a home network I am wanting to set one computer up strictly as a print server (my wireless router does not have print server capabilities). Is there a way with PC Cillin that I can configure the firewall to block all internet traffic to that computer but still let the other computers access for printing? The computer I will be using for a print server is an old Dell Dimension running Win 98. The others are 2 laptops, 1 with XP and 1 with Vista and a Dual G5 Tower (MAC) running OS 10 tiger Thank You

A:Internet access vs Network access

I don't use PC Cillin firewall, but the principle is the same as configuring any firewall. First you want to make sure that your laptops and Mac tower always use the same ip. If they use DHCP to automatically obtain an ip address, then you should make them use static IPs. Then in the firewall, you put in an allow incomming rule for each of your PCs. eg Allow 192.168.0.42 inbound. After those rules you put a Block ALL rule as the last rule.

Hey sorry if I mess something up I'm new.

anyway for most of the day my internet has this pattern of dropping out for half a second or longer every few seconds. This happens on all my devices, and the router is only three months old. I've phoned my provider and they seem to think that I'm overloading my internet but that can't be the case as the disconnections are independent to the times that I'm using it. Every once in a while (more rarely) it drops out completely maybe for a minute or two to fifteen or so minutes which I could understand as overloading it, (though I still don't think it is) but there's no way to explain these smaller drops in my internet?..

I've attached a picture of me pinging google which shows the random delays in response. My plan's download speed should be 10mbps.

Thank you very much for the help!

My internet will just drop out briefly so that whatever I am doing on the internet will stop working, for example streaming a video, it will play fine, until two minutes in it stops, I then have to reload the page to continue playing. This happens over and over very regularly until I decide to turn off my computer. The only exception is Skype; I can be in a call with someone whilst playing a video, the video will stop but I am still chatting with the person on Skype.

Although my internet speed is not the greatest it should not just drop out every 2minute interval. It is a home internet so there are various things using it. It is only a recent problem and would love to fix it

If anyone can help it would be great, thank you for your time.

I need to load an internet browser multiple times to get internet access after the computer has been on for a period of time. The longer the the time the computer has been on, the more times I need to load the browser. This problem has existed for several months. It existed before and after downloading Windows XP Service Pack 2.

For example, I left the computer on overnight last night. I needed to load Microsoft Internet Explorer thirteen times the first twelve of which displayed the message "The page cannot be dispayed." On the thirteenth attempt I received access to my home page on the internet. When I turn off the computer and restart it, I get internet access on the first load of a browser.

I have internet access with email and other programs which are browser independent. It seems to make no difference in results whether I use dial up or a DSL line. It also makes no difference which internet browser I use. I get the same result with Internet Explorer, Maxthon or Firefox.

The computer that has the internet access problem is running Windows XP Pro with all updates installed. I have a DSL router with 4 computers attached, two with Windows 98 SE operating systems, a laptop with Windows XP Pro operating system and the problem computer which is hardwired to the computer. So I've been having on and off issues with my computer for a while that became really bad after I set up my XBOX 360 as an Extender a couple of weeks ago (I have since undone that), Windows Media Player started to regularly crash and I'd noticed that every now and again my network adapter would just drop the connection, only to instantly reconnect. Ran MBAM a few times over and used eset's online scanner. Spybot S&D and MSE as well.

Found a few win32/opencandy, a couple of listings for boaxxe.g trojan and BELIEVE I've cleaned it out. I should mention my MBAM is now the pro edition in an attempt to help with this.

So I've cleaned out several infected files over the past few days and I just can't seem to fix this last bit, and it's really starting to interfere in regular life.

Recently, I switched ISPs from Fios to Comcast and I've been having more consistent issues with my internet on a wired connection. On Fios, the internet was completely stable, but with Comcast the internet randomly drops for a few seconds at a time. It can be fine for hours, then go out 5 times in the next 10 minutes. Just to be clear, when I say the internet drops, all of the lights on the router remain lit indicating the connection is fine, but my computer loses the connection.

With that being said, I'm not sure if it's directly related to switching ISPs. A comcast tech has said that signal levels are fine and the wiring shouldn't be an issue either.

Also, I haven't been able to confirm this, but the issue might be isolated to the computer that is on a wired connection. I can't seem to recall having any issues on devices connected via Wifi. Basically, the connection might be perfectly fine, but something may have happened on my computer recently that has caused these issues. However, I've ran scans to check for viruses, but they have all came back clean.

Are there any troubleshooting steps I can take to narrow down the specific cause of this issue.

New laptop, connected to my home network which is very stable and has no history of connection issues. After about 10 seconds the laptop drops the connection. Sometimes it'll come back for a while sometimes not, haven't observed any pattern in this yet

All I've done since starting the computer for the first time is installed all the junk that comes with it (Nero stuff mostly) and installed all windows updates (there were over 60 of them) and AVG Free edition. Before doing all that the connection was still not right but it did hold for a lot longer than 10 seconds. It held for over an hour downloading programs like Itunes, AVG and Firefox

Going to control panel > network sharing centre when the connection is down I see the yellow exclamation mark between my computer and my network. Troubleshooting this resets the network adapter, gives me the error 'The default gateway is not available' and says that it is fixed. The connection then works again for about 10 seconds and drops once more.

From setting up the network I think the default gateway is the router IP address?

The internet on the other computers on the network (one desktop one laptop) is fine and uninterrupted

I can't get the connection to hold for long enough to download SysInfo but this is the laptop:

This has been going on for about a year now while I've been on helpdesk tickets with the router, modem, and even my ISP. The problem is that on any large or long downloads my network drops. This happens on wired or wireless, windows or mac and occurs about the same time in the download. Let's say I need to update windows, I hit the update button and right on 65% the download stops and my router shows that my network just got killed. However, If I run a speedtest it still shows good speed, and I can still watch movies or browse the internet just fine. The download just stops right there and won't pick back up. If I restart the PC then it does the same thing, stops at 65%. Next I tried doing another type of large download, a game, Borderlands 2 through steam. It stops right at 55% and the network drops, so I restart that computer(wired) and same thing. Then I pause the download, restart the modem and the router, and hit resume, still won't download, but the speedtest shows it's just fine and my other computers are surfing the net like a champ. Then it must be a problem with the router or modem right? Well I've tried it out on two different modems and two different routers, both brand new and not cheap by any means(Details below). So if the same thing happens when I switch out the hardware, then it must be the ISP, but again, the speedtest and everything else looks like they are fine and my ISP(Comcast) has two tickets on this and can't see any... So I've had this issue for about 3 months now, my computer will stop loading internet every hour which in order to be fixed needs a restart. My setup is Modem->Netgear router(current firmware)-> Windows XP(wired). All other devices in my house run perfectly fine off the internet.

Also, there other related issues. ICS 90% of the time doesn't start, and when I turn on the computer and log in the theme is windows classic instead of the Windows XP theme.

And there is another issue, which I think is the main culprit, my default gateway,DHCP server, and DNS server all have the same address. I've tried setting it to static instead of auto obtain, but then my IP address drops completely(0.0.0.0).

For the record, I've ran multiple virus scanners, Chkdsk, and reinstalled Winsock. Any ideas would be great to hear

I'm constantly having to disconnect the power wait 5 minutes and reconnect the power to get everything back online.
From what i can tell the main problem is the DIR-300 router, ive checked it has the latest firmware, reset the router from factory, tested it with less connections, called up my ISP and checked everything was good on there end but to no avail.

My Knowledge in this field is very limited so good directions would be very much appreciated.

For the past 3 months my internet connection has been dropping 3-4 times per day. I never have problems in the morning. Problems are usually at their worst in the afternoon. It will drop 2-3 times in the afternoon and sometimes once or twice in the evening. Whenever the internet disconnects I get a "Limited or no connectivity". 99% of the time I do not have to unplug the power cables on the router/modem, the connection usually reconnects itself within 2 minutes at most. I have 3 laptops at my house and all are connected wirelessly. All of them lose connection when the internet disconnects. I have called my ISP a couple of times and they said the problem wasn't from them.

My ISP is comcast. I am currently using a Cisco DPC3000 DOCSIS 3.0 cable modem. My router is Netgear WNDR3300. I've changed my modem (was using a motorola surfboard before) and that didn't help. I've played with the channels, MTU size, static/dynamic IP, pretty much everything that I have read in other threads. I do believe that my problem deals with a minor change, but I just don't know what to do anymore. Please help, thanks!

Common one this one, but in our case it wasn't a driver issue - it was a DNS issue!

For us, this problem all seems to centre around DNS. Windows 10 seems to occasionally and randomly change which network adaptor it's going to route DNS requests to. For those who don't know - DNS is a system whereby a name like Google gets converted to a unique machine address such as 182.43.11.202. DNS servers are external computers that provide this service. If this service doesn't work properly, you won't be able to browse any websites properly.

One solution if you're using WiFi is to disable your Ethernet adaptor in Windows by going into Control Panel -> Network Connections:

This will force Windows to always use your WiFi connection for DNS requests.

So how about if you use your Local Area Connection for something else - maybe for NAS (Network Attached Storage such as an external hard drive)? My father has such a set-up, with a static IP address at each end, so that he can access shared storage. However for some reason Windows was asking this connection for DNS, which obviously wouldn't work!

(You can confirm this by opening a Windows command window and typing nslookup and pressing Enter. If it shows the IP address of your LAN adaptor instead of the Wireless adaptor, this is what's happening.)

The fix is to go into your Local Area Network adaptor Properties (same menu as shown in the picture above), then go to Internet Protocol Version 4 and click Properties, then ... Read more

now, we run a firewall, and use websense.
My firewall is pointing all traffic to go through websense.
websense has www.google.com listed as "Unfiltered"

Still no joy.

the only way I have found of being able to access the pages is if I turn off web filtering on the firewall (scary) so that would suggest the issue is on the firewall, but as all web traffic points to websense why would that be?

Windows Server 2003. Firewall is a Netscreen 25. websense version 6.2

Any suggestions?

Initially the network icon and sharing center were correctly indicating network connection status.  After the third windows update session in 4 days it now is constantly stating that I do not have network or internet access.  This is not the case as IE and Firefox, Outlook 07 and Thunderbird all can get online without issues.  Also network commands (ping, tracert, ipconfig) work from the command line and show positive connections and even IP addresses. If anyone has suggestions on what is wrong or better yet can help me solve this please say so.CB

A:Network and Sharing Center falsely reports no network or internet access

No I do not have two network cards - only the on board LAN connector.  This network device works fine without issues in Device Manager (no bangs or red stop icons) and shows that the correct 'signed' driver is present.Right now I have re-installed the card from device manager (right click on network card listed, choose uninstall) then re-scan for new hardware and it is up and running again.  Same driver (latest) installed and the Network Places icon is showing correct information as well as the sharing center.  As soon as the computer enters standby, sleep or hibernate or I have to restart (warm or cold boot) this will change back to 'No Internet Access' in both the icon on the taskbar and in network sharing center.Again this appears to be an issue with Rhine PHY and Windows 7.
Hi CBThis may be associated with a known bug in Windows 7 with the Sleep/Hibernate components.
The bug appears when a hardware/software component fails to re-initialize when the system resumes from Sleep or Hibernation or will not enter the suspend state.
These bugs have only been seen on specific systems that have combinations of certain hardware/software installed. The only way we have to deal with these issues in the RC build is to try and avoid using the Sleep/Hibernate functions as much as possible. If you experience this bug and still need to use the Sleep or Hibernate functions be aware that you could possibly lose any unsaved information in applications. The latest information we have is ...
