I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Disconnect the drive and tell us what the computer then reports. Your HLDS optical drive is among the most basic of all drives installed by Dell, but it has an extremely high failure rate.

I have WD 1 TB drive that was working fine. I noticed it had 3 partitions on it so I removed 2 of them with AOMEI Partition Assistant.
Aomei competed the operations and now my box will not recognize the drive. I tried it on my desktop and it also will not recognize the drive.
When I connect the drive, on either machine, it makes that "beep/bump" sound that lets me know something has been inserted but that is it.

Any ideas.

Also:
I went into device manager and told it to scan for hardware changes, that did nothing.
I tried to update drivers but that never completed. The progress bar just kept looking and did not find anything.

Hi all, well this is a long shot now to post a question about my prety old mp3 player(Rio Chiba 128). The thing is that I have a good amount of good music I would like to copy off of it. Anyways I have Vista Home Premium 32bit and when I plug in the mp3 player, it recognizes it as being a Rio Chiba device but can not find any available drivers for it. I already tried the following:-changed the cable-directed the "New Device" wizard to look for drivers in C:\Windows\INF , C:\Windows\winsxs-copied different copies of "usbstor.inf" & "usbstor.PNF" into C:\Windows\INF and different locations but none of those have worked-I have even tried deleting INFCACHE.1 and nothing. -went to: http://www.digitalnetworksna.com/support/r....asp?prodID=109 which is Rio's support page for this device but they claim it doesnt need a driver as the OS should read it as a mass storage device. The mp3 player still works fine and plays music as it should it just doesnt want to be recognized in either vista or xp. any help or suggestions is really appreciate it as Im very little away from giving up on it. Thanks all!

With it plugged in go to the Control Panel>Administrative Tool>Computer Management. Double-click on Storage. Double-click on disk Management.
On the top, click on Action and select Refresh

If it doesn't show, go to your Device Manager and see if there are any yellow exclamation points by the USB Root Hub Controllers

Hi there!

I need some help because it is driving me *nuts* not being able to find out why this is happening.
I can't copy to my USB flash disk (Kingston Data Traveler 8GB) or my external hard drive - Toshiba 2.5'' 160 GB HDD in a USB powered external enclosure.

I can copy very small files to the flash drive - like 500-800 kb. Anything bigger results in a "preparing to copy" window with a scrolling bar. Nothing happens if i wait...
The first time i plugged in the USB hard drive, Windows recognized it and tried installing drivers for it but it just hung on "Windows is installing drivers for this device" and i had to unplug the drive since nothing was happening. Now nothing happens, i don't even get the previously mentioned balloon in the bottom right corner, though the hard drive powers up.

And to make this even crazier, my USB mouse and keyboard work just fine, no matter of what USB i connect them (front panel, back).
I tried uninstalling them from Device Manager, enabling/disabling Legacy USB Support from the BIOS (was set to BIOS Setup Only), plugging them in all the USB port i have, including front panel.

There is nothing wrong with both the USB flash drive and the USB hard drive - they work perfectly on my laptop the second i plug them in.

Please help - i really need the use of these two devices...

I lost the drivers to my USB stick aka Flash Drive aka USB Mass Storage Device. Googling around, it became apparent that this is not unusual, and with a variety of suggestions, some of which are a bit extreme. What fixed it for me, and what seems a sensible place for anyone to start is to reinstall the driver. To do this...

Put the USB stick into a USB port and when the Add New Hardware wizard appears Browse your way to C:\windows\inf then let the wizard complete the installation process. This may take a while as it works it way through all the options.

If the wizard does not appear then open "Device Manager" look for the Flash Drive, which will have a yellow fault icon, right click it, select properties, and do the Install Driver procedure, browsing to C:\windows\inf.

I'm fairly sure (but not certain) that the file needed is usbstor.inf so you may wish to just select that to see if it speeds things up.

I hope this is some help i getting you out of what seems like a very deep hole when you're in it!

I am trying to give mysyelf a mass storage device, and so far it hasn't worked. First, I tried a 640G Hitchahci USB hard drive, but I received error messages during data transfer. I replaced it with a Hammer 640G USB unit. The same thing happened. I also noticed that the packaking (AC adaptor, etc USB cable, etc) were identical, except the Hammer was $10 more. So I figured MicroCenter (where I get my hardware) got a shipment of USB drives from the same manufacturer just with different housing and brand name (Hammer and Hitachi). I exchamged the second one for a Maxtor OneTouch4 1TB USB drive at MicoCenter. The same thing happens: I plug it in and XP doesn't find it. I tried every USB slot on my box, and it still doesn'r work. This should be the easiest thing in the world to do, plug in a USB mard drive and have it work.

All ideas and opinions are more than welcome. Thanks!

Hi

I am running Vista on a HP laptop.

My USB mass storage device is no longer showing up as an icon, meaning I can not save or retrieve files. I have tried other drives and the icon is also missing.

What puzzles me is the drivers are installed and the laptop recognizes the device when plugged in, I can safely remove it and also see it correctly named under devices. I just can not access it.

I have tried to assign a new drive letter to the drive under My Computer Management but the option to assign a drive icon is greyed out.

I have checked other mass storage devices on this laptop and the same problem occurs; the machine recognizes the device just does not allow me to access it as a drive. I have also tested the drive on another machine and it is fine.

My lap top over heated and closed down a few weeks ago and I wonder if another driver or system file was corrupted?

Can any one help me?

Thanks!

I have an old Lumix digital DSLR camera that uses an SD card. i don't have a USB cable for the camera so I've been using a USB adapter for the SD card. I'm usually very avid about ejecting the SD card / USB drives properly, but I think I might have forgotten when I was in a hurry once.

Now I get the message that I need to format the drive before it can be read. I have already tried formatting the SD card with the camera and with the computer using the USB adapter. However, at other times I have managed to get it to copy the images. once I even got the error message "data error (cyclic redundancy check)" but I have not been able to reproduce that message.

The SD card works perfectly fine on my husband's computer with the same USB adapter.

I have also tried using a different digital camera to transfer the pictures. Now when I use this other digital camera (Sony Cybershot), it seems to be trying to mount it 3 times. The first two times I get the message that no new images were found. The last time it copies the new images just fine.

I believe it's some sort of drive recognition error rather than a problem with the SD card since it works in other camera's and computers.

I've already tried deleting the mass storage drive from devices, and setting Windows back using system restore. Other USB sticks work just fine.

I'm running Windows 7 on a 64 bit computer, with two front built in USB ports.

any ideas on how I can fix this?

I need advise about my 'puter please

A bit of history of what has happened:
My old Maxtor mini external HDD that I used for daily back ups of "C" drive crashed and died last week.
The external drive was connected to computer through a USB 2 port on back of case and is run by a back up program called Acronis True Image 2012.

The system I have runs Windows XP with a:
Floppy drive @ A,
Internal HDD (250 Gb) @ C,
DVD R/W @ D,
DVD R/W @ E and
2Tb external HDD @ G (this is the new Seagate one I just bought to replace the dead Maxtor Mini external HDD)

I have 8 USB 2 ports on the back and the only things connected to them are my 2 Lexmark printers:
A Lexmark X8300 on USB 002 described as Virtual Printer Port for USB, &
A Lexmark Z12 on USB 003 described as Virtual Printer Port for USB

I also have a 4 port USB 3 expansion card installed, but my new Seagate 2Tb external HDD is the only thing connected to the USB 3 expansion card ports

I think there is nothing connected at Drive F !!

When old external HDD died - it locked up computer and the only way I could shut down / turn off was to turn off at power point. I then disconnected the old dead external HDD and on restart, Windows XP had the "wobbles" and had a message that there were problems with the last shut down and would only restart if I selected ?Start with last known good session?. I have two drives, Win98se on C and Winxpsp3 on D. D is default boot. I also have a USB2 mass storage drive, 400gb hard drive. It is connected to my PC through a 5.25" USB enclosure.

I had some problems with my PC lately and have had my external drive had to be replaced. I kept the same enclosure. While this was going on this desktop pc was off and not being used. I have been using my laptop for the last couple of weeks. The original and the replacement were both 400gb Seagate IDE's. I think they're slightly different models. I reconnected my usb mass storage drive and now it doesn't want to show up.

Its configured properly as a Master. Before the drive was replaced everything was fine.

It is configures as a master properly. When I plug it in it shows up as seeing something but is unable to complete the install.

Is this something that will eventually fix itself or do I need a new USB enclosure or is something else wrong, like in the Device Manager or something? I can't connect it to my laptop either, same problem. It starts to recognize something but doesn't want to complete the install.

A:External USB2 mass Storage Drive Doesn't Want to show up

I've had this problem a few times. Usually, when you have a USB Mass Storage Device somewhere, you absolutely have to "Safely Remove Hardware" - because even Linux won't read a drive that hasn't been "Safely" removed from a Windows system. You should do this even if you're leaving it attached when shutting down.

Now, here's what I had to do...No guarantees, and it may take several times to get it to go properly from that point forward.

While the unfinished detection of the drive is listed in Device Manager...
Uninstall any and all USB devices relating to it. Mine was "WDC WD15EADS-xxxxxx USB Device" This includes also anything relating to "USB Device" under the Disk Drives in the DM, as well as under "USB Serial Bus Controllers" USB Mass Storage Controller is another thing to look for.

Refresh the Device manager WHILE the drive is still connected. Uninstall them all over again, disconnect the drive, reboot, wait till Windows loads back up again, and reattach it.

After about 3 times doing that, it finally started working. That's how I got MINE to work. Hopefully someone else has a better battle plan, but this is what did it for me.

Hiya, hope someone can help. XP has decided not to assign a drive letter to any flash card reader/USB drive I use in my PC (previously used drives no longer have a drive letter in Explorer)

Going into Computer Management/Disk Management the drives are detected with no drive letter, I can give them a letter and access them but the letter doesn't stick, nor is it seen in Explorer (ie remove drive and replug, no letter, no auto open options and no sign of it in Explorer)

I've tried going into regedit, mounted devices and deleting all letters (apart from A-floppy, C-Main HD, D-Optical drive obviously) to try to force XP to assign a letter.

I don't want to do a system restore (all drives worked before) as I've just managed to instal SP3 RC2 after a lot of hassle plus I suspect this has nothing to do with my new/odd USB drive problem.

All other USB peripherals work perfectly, tis just Mass Storage Devices won't display, I tried a new drive and XP went through the New hardware bit, recognised it, said it was ready but didn't assign it a letter/ open it.

Any ideas how I can force Explorer to open the drives ? (going through Admin Tools is a pain after all)

I recently purchased a 32 GB San Disk Flash Drive. The security files pre-installed on the drive were junk, and I could not delete them so I formatted the drive to remove them. This cleaned the disk, and it holds data, but I'm not sure if this is part of my problem. I am trying to load my copy of windows 7 onto this disk, and using the Windows 7 USB/DVD Download tool, I can select my ISO file, but when I go to select my USB drive, my computer does not recognize the flash drive as a flash drive. Is there a way to change the Flash Drive so Windows will recognize my Flash Drive as removable media? Smaller USB drives still work on my computer, so its not the computer. Anyone have any suggestions?

Let's start with this: can you post a screenshot of your Disk Management window, expanded so we can read everything, with the USB stick installed?

You also might check in Device Manager to see if the stick shows up as a USB device, or a hard disk.

Hallo, I really hope te find some help here!
(English is not my language, so I apologize if it sounds a bit ?bumpy?)

Sinds a few months I have a Satellite C40-C-10Q, 32 GB flash drive.

With it I bought Office 365 including 1 TB on OneDrive.

So beside Windows 10 (pre installed) and Office 365 and the AVG Internet Security (installed by me) there is hardly anything else on the laptop.

But it obviously is more than the laptop can handle: There is NOT even enough space for the Win 10 update coming up automatically, nor for the AVG updates! (I only use OneDrive)
That is ridiculess! It also means that the laptop is terribly slow.

What can I do?

I called Toshiba Support in the Netherlands and was told that I could place the recovery partition on a USB stick, giving me some 5 GB extra storage.
I haven?t done that yet, because I found some warning message on the Toshiba site involving WinBoot. I do not know what that is, so ??. (http://aps2.toshiba-tro.de/kb0/TSB5703RQ0000R01NL.htm)
However, if it is something that can be done with this laptop, I would like to know how I must go about it to make it happen!

There also seems to be another ?trick? using a SD card ? and sorry, I don?t remember what that is about.
I did buy a SD card, but only then saw that it?s the micro version and I will have to have whatever it takes to make it bigger and fit into the opening in the laptop

Have an asus laptop that i will be no longer using after i get my new sager laptop. I have files that are on my current laptop that i save in my documents that include important documents, then you have music files i downloaded and video files. I also have a really old usb kingston flash drive that i bought many years ago thats only 4gb. Currently theres not much space left due to me having the documents, music files and maybe just 1-2 videos. I cannot put much more music album or video like that as there wouldn't be enough space.

Thus all the videos that i have, its pretty much in my laptop only. There are videos that i downloaded and kept and i keep most of it on adrive.com. Someone mentioned thats a site where you could store up to 50gb data. They said if you wanted more, you could create another account as its not a big deal.

When i get my sager laptop, it won't have a dvd drive. So if i want to format it in the future, i cant put the dvd in it. I read here that i would have to download windows 7 64 bit iso file on a usb drive had i wanted to install windows myself but i had xoticpc do it. Well the thing is if i need to format it again, i know i need to have an iso file downloaded on flash drive. I also read that its 3.1gb and since my flash drive is only 4gb... and its smaller than that as you know.

That means im going to have to get another flash drive then right in case i need to format? If so, should i be getting a 16gb or 32gb flash drive? Or is 32gb ... Read more

A:Usb Flash Drive and Storage Online Sites

Also, do most of you use those storage sites to keep files? And if you do, do you feel its more reliable than a flash drive as backup? The thing is as long as you remember your username and password and email associated with it, then thats actually better than a usb flash drive right since you can always lose the flash drive?

Also could you download almost any file and upload it to adrive? I only done videos but i'm pretty sure word documents and any document or pdf file and music songs work there as well? If so, is there a reason why it seem like most ppl never heard of it? Because it offers 50gb of space and that is a lot. But has anyone heard of it being hacked or files get lost or corrupted? I heard about icloud and i hear its basically the same thing as adrive except its for ios and macs. Is that true?

I'm curious besides the laptop or computer you are using, whats the 2nd, 3rd etc place you back up your important documents, pictures and files? I would figure its computer 1st, then a storage site, then a flash drive in that order? Is there another option? Because there are some documents that i want to make sure is there and i won't lose it etc.

Also are those sites safe to store passwords for sites? I have lot of password for sites and i keep my username/password in my laptop and in the small usb flash drive i use. I can't get the Kingston Data Travler (DT1/1GB) to be recognized in the front USB ports. This happens on two machines running XP Pro. It says new hardware found, then unknown usb device then message that it is not recognized rather then the message that it will run in USB 1. The memory stick works fine in the rear port.
I tried it in two machines running W2K and it works in front and back.
I installed the drivers from the mother board CD and updated to SP2 for XP but no help.
The flast drive uses 50ma in the rear port. I know the front ports are ok as I can use two other flast drives in either of the ports and a Logitech camera that uses 100ma.
Anyone have an idea? I'm tired of looking for the port in the back under my desk.

A:Flash drive not recognized with XP

Its possible the front USB ports are just faulty.

But try the solution posted here by Johnwill: http://forums.techguy.org/hardware/467982-mass-storage-blackout.html?highlight=usb+device+manager

An easy work around would be to buy an USB extension cable, connect it into the back port and then bring it up front to connect the USB key too.

Is there someplace that will do a virus scan of the drive cheap? I wouldn't plug it into a friend's computer to test it because if there's a virus on it they may not be a friend much longer.

I'd say the possibilities are:

a) something physical in the drive. They are not the most rugged. Electronic stuff may be intermittently connected.

b) the drive picked up a virus

c) the USB port or system you are plugging into is flaky.

First thing I'd do is try to get it tested for virus at a PC store and while they are at it maybe run some other tests, that is if the place doesn't charge a lot for that service.

Once you rule out the virus then you may try some diagnostics like plugging it into a different PC.

jterry,

Right click on My Computer, select Manage. Click Disk Management. Look and see if your dive is listed in the lower/right pane. If it is, see if it has a drive letter assigned. If no drive letter, right click the drive and select Change drive letter and path and then assign your usb drive a letter.

Hi, I've got a flash drive with some document from my collegue few days ago. When I plugged the flash drive for the first time everything went well. I did what I needed and then ejected and unplugged the drive. After few hours when I connected it again Windows did not show anything and after few minutes it showed a disc with an grey icon and impossible to use or explore.

So far there are three flash drives I've tested. Kingston DataTraveler 4GB, brand new A-DATA 16GB and GOODRAM 16GB. All three are working perfectly fine on an older pc with Windows XP and on a laptop with Windows 7 32-bit. On my pc A-DATA is the one taking long time to appear and then working fine (shown and possible to explore) and GOODRAM is the same case. Kingston appears only with a grey icon after probably same amount of time and it's not possible to work with. In the disk management A-DATA and GOODRAM are shown normally. Kingston is shown but without the memory information. It shows G: as a letter of a drive but there is "no medium" sign.

It does not matter whether I connect the flash drives to both usb ports in the front panel or any from the rear panel.
I've been using the GOODRAM mainly in the past and it worked without any problem. The flash drive was shown immediately I connected it to the pc. Then there could have been a month I haven't used any flash drive because I somehow didn't need to. And then those problems started to appear. Meanwhile I've ins... Read more

I have a Cruzer Mini and I know for a fact it needs drivers in 98, so you may try dling their drivers for 98 and installing them. ME and 98 are very similar.

Using a Compaq computer running Windows Vista Home Premium, when I load a flash drive into either of the ports, I get a message saying:

"USB device not recognized" I have tried reinstalling the device with the same result. There is power to the device.

When I open "My Computer" it does not display the device, only the DVD drive "E"

In "System (tools?)" I can open the "Universal Serial Bus controller" which tells me that no drivers are installed for this device.

The Flashdrive is not corrupt or defective, it works just fine in other computers.

I would like to be able to access the files on this device from this computer. Any help in doing so would be very much appreciated. Please keep it very simple - step by step is best.

If I need to install some software to run this device, where can I find it? Safely, and preferably for free.

Thanks in advance.

It sounds as if your pc doesn't have the drivers for your flash-drive. Try looking at the website of the manufacturer of your flash-drive or if no luck there then the Windows support website. Once these are installed your pc should recognise and be able to work with it.

Hello,

Any USB flash drive that I have purchased, my computer hp-1040n with XP will not recognize. You don't hear the USB noise when you plug them into the port. I've tried plugging them into every USB port, but it still never shows it. The lights on the Flash drive will flash at first, then nothing.

All of these do work on my laptop with XP.

The USB ports on the HP 1040n do recognize my mp3 player, joy stick, epson printer, Hp scanner, and other usb devices. So the ports are working.

I also have tried an extrenal hard drive, the HP 1040n will not recognized that either, but again, my lap top does.

It appears that it doesn't like storage drives.

Any sugguestions?

Thanks

I have noticed a similar post elsewhere in the group
http://www.techspot.com/vb/topic55187.html
and the answer was...

Go into Device manager and remove all items related to USB such as Root Hub and USB controller, do this by right clicking each item and choosing uninstall,

Once all done, reboot and let Windows find the USB items, then try your USB stick.

Incidentally if you see anything with a Yellow Exclamation mark then remove that as well it might be the USB stick after it had failed install, and as such wont be redetected when plugged in.

Might work for you as well.

I have three different USB flashdrives. I can read and write to them from two of my computers, but my Compaq does not recognize them. This happens from time to time and the last fix was made by formatting the drives to FAT and then reformatting them to NTFS if you want to. However, given that there are 3 drives all with the same symptoms you should check that the USB ports are not showing a fault in device manager (Control Panel > System > Hardware > Device Manager). Do other USB devices work OK in the Compaq?
I am assuming that the Compaq does not show the drives in Explorer?

Googled all day and no answer to my specific question.

I have some software that requires the USB pen drive to be inserted for the software to work. The chinese I bought it from have some how made the drive INVISIBLE.

I mean it does not show in MY COMPUTER, it does not show in DISK MANAGEMENT. Tried various CMD lines, tried various software INC TWEAKUI and others. No joy. As I say its a working drive as its needed to run my software. It seems the chinese are doing this often now as I have bought other items from china and all have these silly drives with the software you buy.

I just want to be able to read whats on the drive so I can clone it in case it breaks on me in the future. Or better still copy whats on it onto my HDD so that the software works without the damn FLASH DRIVE. I hate to have to always have a pen drive sticking out my laptop.

Today I bought a Kingston 512MB DataTraveler Flash Drive. I have a Dell desktop with OS Windows XP and also a Dell notebook with OS Windows Vista. I used the flash drive with my notebook to save a document I was working on. It worked fine. Then I plugged the flash drive into desktop and saved several other documents and pictures to it. I proceeded to plug my flash drive back into my notebook to transfer the files to it. Before the F drive had been displaying KINGSTON(F: ). Now, when I go to My Computer(on both the desktop & notebook) the F drive displays REMOVABLE DISK(F: ). And when I click on it to open my flash drive or to save to it, an error message appears saying: Please insert a disk into Removable Drive(F: )

-The new Kingston flash drive IS compatible with both Vista & XP.
-I also have an older Memorex flash drive that I have used to transfer files from my desktop to notebook. It has worked just fine.
-I have no idea what is wrong.

Any help would be greatly appreciated, as I am using the flash drive for my college classes and need it this week.

I'm having a problem with one specific USB flash drive. I've read hundreds of posts about this topic and have attempted many of the suggested solutions, but alas no luck. I have a Windows 7 (64 bit) laptop.

The USB drive in question is made by Dane Elec. It has a 1Gb capacity. It is compatible with Win 7 (64 bit) according to the Windows website. Whenever I attempt to use the drive in the laptop, I get a message from Windows that the drive has malfunctioned and the driver was not loaded. This happens on any of the 3 usb ports. However, other usb flash drives operate flawlessly in any of the ports. In addition, the usb flash drive in question DOES work on other computers (Windows XP desktop, Windows XP laptop, Windows 7 (64 bit) HP All-in-One PC).

I have updated the BIOS and Intel chipset drivers, and the USB drivers are up to date. I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling the USB controller in Device Manager. I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling the usb drive (Windows reports that the drive in question is an "Unknown Device") without success. I have tried the "power off" trick mentioned in several places on the internet. In addition, I have changed many of the applicable Windows 7 services that would interface with usb drives from "manual" to "automatic."

I read one post (perhaps on this forum) that suggested a registry tweak to one of the timeout parameters, but I haven't been able to find this post again. At... Read more

I have a problem with a USB thumb drive.

Machine is an old laptop, PII, running W2K. I have just done a complete re-install of the OS. I have a D-Link USB 2.0 PCMCIA card

When I plug the flash drive in, the computer recognizes it, goes through the usual "finding new hardware"... then I open My Computer, and it shows up as a removable disk. so far, so good.

When I open the disk, several things happen: first, it shows me the contents of the drive, and usually pauses long enough to let me select a file. Then I simultaneously get a "Sytem Settings Change" box "Windows 200 has finished installing new devices. You must restart..." and the "Unsafe Removal of Device" box, warning me that I unplugged a device without stopping it.

Following this double message, windows can no longer access the drive, claiming that it is not formatted and offering to format it. Sometimes, if I follow through with the format, it can see it again, but not always.

Any suggestions?
