M58P - White dash trying install W10 via USB Boot

Q: M58P - White dash trying install W10 via USB Boot

Hi, Before anything, I would like to apogolize for my bad English, I?m like so many french guy bad at other languages ! I got a problem with my Thinkcentre 7635-W1n. It?s a computer I bought with W10 OEM pre-installed on a HDD. However, I wanted to replace this HDD by a SSD. So when I receive the computer I make the replacement and I erase the HDD for using as a save HDD. After create an USB boot with Rufus, the screen displays « Error 1962, no operating system found ». After many tries :Convert the SSD in GPT format and create an USB boot UEFI compatible (yes, I was able to use Gparted from live USB) ;Change thing in the BIOS : but there is no thing about Secure Boot/Legacy in the settings. But this recent tries don?t lead to boot on USB. Now, after try booting on USB, I have a white dash sign in the top left corner. I read that there is a problem with the Lenovo with an OEM OS but can?t find the solution myself. Thank you for reading my post and have a nice day

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

My computer, which was running windows 10 without much issue, is now completely unusable for reasons beyond my comprehension. After bios messages I now only have a blinking white dash on a black screen.

I have tried various repairs, with the windows recovery usb. All automatic repairs fail due to the disk "being locked", so i have tried a few guides which involved bcdboot commands which have failed to fix anything. One command was bcdboot g: which gave an error like failed copying boot files (i forget the exact wording) .

Could some kind soul point me towards a fix, im tearing my hair out! Many thanks!

Hey guys, here I am again with another failure.
Today morning I woke up to my windows refusing to boot. It just does the white dash blinking in the top left corner (it jumps down a bit at first, then just keeps blinking endlessly). I'm aware that this can be a result of a poor shutdown or a crash or modified system files or program installation, or whatever. The thing is last night I was using the computer fine and I didn't install anything, modify anything, and it shut down correctly (as far as I know - after I clicked shut down I shut off the monitors and went somewhere else, and just when I came back it turned off so I assume it was fine).

I've tried a number of things already. First, I'm booting from an Ubuntu CD right now and my files are all fine and intact on the C:\ drive. Second, I tried running my Windows 7 CD to go into the recovery system and tried a bunch of things.

The recovery thing doesn't detect my operating system, first of all, but I've had this issue before. I remember that I got it to work somehow, but I don't remember how. I think it might have been a disc that I burned with a modification that allowed it to detect the system (I used some tutorials over at sevenforums.com, can't remember which ones now though). I'll look for the CD, I might have it somewhere.
EDIT: I found what I presume is the CD but it doesn't even want to boot. I'll try looking for whatever I found before and make another one, I guess. But if I could get it to det... Read more

A:Help - Windows won't boot, white dash blinking endlessly.

From what you have written, this should be impossible but I suggest you to press F8 right before booting into windows, and select 'Use last known good config'.
This issue sound really hopeless, but if you could manage to boot into any windows which is on another partition (if you have any), you could rebuild the MBR manually (master boot record) which stores the OS information.
Do you have another disk/partition?
If yes, the best would be to install W7 on it (takes 20mins) do the above things (I will explain it further if you have another partition) and then boot back into your original OS and would be able to delete the 'blank' windows 7 installation files from the orher partition.

First, i restarted my stupid computer
Then, i got that grub error.
I happily fixed that.
However, when I restarted it again,
I got stuck at black screen with stupid blinkking white dash.
So I use the Recovery Disc thingy
And i clicked that first option.
Then it says, something like
unable to fix it.
Then it says that the stupid missing boot thingy is missing.
Googled for solution.
Tried those command prompt like
Fixmbr or scanos
(it says theres an installation
I typed Y for yes and still,
That boot missing chkdsk thingy still pops up)
Remove hardwares (wait whats a hardware is it those usb thingy?)
Checked the BIOS which I googled again for its meaning.(and yes, it is in order)
But never worked.
So any suggestions or explain with more detail?
Because I have no idea about these computer stuffs.
Help me !

I used the regular procedures and shut it down correctly, but when i tried to boot it up earlier this morning, the only thing that comes up is a blank black screen with a flashing white dash in the upper left hand corner. I have already tried to remove reset the BIOS by removing the battery and then later restarting, but it did not help at all. Also, it wont even boot far enough for me to start in safe/real mode. Any suggestions?

Hi sherm12789 and welcome to TSF

Start up your computer by either tapping the F1, F2, F4, F6, F8, F10, F11, F12, or Delete keys to access the systems BIOS. For the exact information on what key to start up the System BIOS refer back to Original Manufacturer System Documentation.

After getting into the BIOS, look for a page that would have something like, eg. PC Health Screen or System Monitoring Page. When you have found a page similar to this post back what the BIOS says for your temperatures, voltages, and fan speeds.

I got my Radeon 6570 today and I installed it, but now Windows won't boot it just gives me the blinking white dash. So I removed the card, switched back to onboard from BIOS and it still didn't work. I tried a lot of other stuff but it didn't work so I reinstalled Windows with the graphics card removed (Hoping it would reinstall the drivers for the onboard video) it didn't. So then I tried booting from an old Linux disc I found and it worked (how I am typing) but Windows still won't. Any help? I ran a diagnostics text and everything is working, and I can even access all my personal files on my old Windows install from Linux so I know that it's active.

Hi! Sorry for opening a new thread but this is just so serious and I am so stressed out about it that I didn't have the patience to search if the thread is already open.
I have a black screen and white blinking dash problem. The thing is, I can't even type f2 or f4, or anything whatsoever. It is not reacting at all to the keyboard. It's the second time this is happening in 2 days, every time I turn it off (properly) and try to turn it on, it does that. After a lot of hopeless trying to turn it on or make f2 or f4 work, it just starts working again normally... And now I finally turned it on after I spent the whole morning trying and I'm working on saving all my files, but now I'm scared to turn it off. What do I do?? What is wrong with my computer?

First of all, sorry about my English.

Few days ago, I was working on my laptop (ASUS X5DI) and when I decide shuting down, I realize that needs to intall updates. I let him to shut down by itself and do it fine without any problems.

Next day, when I turn on the computer again, the show me this (its spanish but i think you'll know what screen is):

I thought then, that something in the update process went wrong, so I try to fix it. First, I tried it by click on the "Repair Startup" option in that image menu. A message box that wants to select a keyboard language appeared but after that and some comprobations of the process, It said to me with an alert box that it couldn't be possible:

Then..  this other screen appeared:

I click on the options, even in the prompt option, and tried to fix it with bootrec commands like /fixboot or /fixmbr but nothing fix the problem.

So... What I decided? the solution that "never fail" ... format all my pc again and get a "new" computer hahaha..

I get into the BIOS and change the boot order to start from CD/DVD. Save changes, introduce the Windows 7 disc and restart.

I realized that my computer cant start from cd/dvd because that white blinking cursor appears on the top left of the screen.

I tried with different CD/DVD even Ubuntu CD and always the blink cursor appears. So... if I use HDD boot in BIOS appears the screen on the top... Read more

Hello, I am trying to install Windows XP (because Windows 7 is damn slow) Corporate Edition 64-bit but after the Copying Windows Files setup portion, the setup wants to restart my computer, but after the motherboard logo, I just get the blacnk screen with white dash - if CD is inserted I get "Press any key to boot from CD....." and a white dash at the end with nothing happening. I've searched for a solution everywhere, but I didn't find my case. I have installed XP atleas 20 times on this computer, and I've never had such problem before. I thought it could be because of the 64-bit version, but after trying to install the 32-bit version I have got the same issue, which has never happened before. Windows 7 installs perfectly. I have: removed the CD from the drive; Updated the BIOS to the last version; Tried running in safe mode and nothing helped. My computer specs are: Processor: Intel Pentium DualCore @ 2.80 GHz, 4GB of DDR2 RAM, 650GB HDD SATA2, ATI HD 4770 512MB DDR5 Graphics Card, American Megatrends Inc. 0502 BIOS. I hope there's somebody out there to help me because I really want XP.

A:Black screen with white dash after first portion of Windows Setup?

Seems that Windows XP installation is not detecting or having problems with your SATA2 drive.

Try going to BIOS and Switching the SATA2 drive out of RAID mode if possible see if that helps.

Windows Xp has issues with SATA2 Drives.

Or you may need to slipstream your copy of Xp with sp2 or 3 if your cd is only SP1 for it to recognize and work with SATA drives. Also with SATA drives I believe Windows XP only recognizes 128GB 137GB SATA drives.

Hello,

Before reading the below paragraph NOTE: I used the windows 7 upgrade advisor to tell me if there are any compatibility problems and nothing came in.

I recently installed Windows 7 on my Acer Aspire 6530 and it worked great, no problems at all! I thought it was amazing due to microsoft's previous attempts. Anyway in the excitment I attempt to upgrade my other Acer Aspire 7720 which also is a laptop, and I boot it while on the computer so I can save my files, and then it booted with a black screen with a flashing white dash, so I attempted to install Windows 7 by simply booting it with a CD, after all of that, it has the same result.

Obviously all my files are gone, but I was smart enough to make a back-up which it is now on, but what I want to know is there is anyway to fix it so I CAN use Windows 7, there shouldn't be any problems upgrading my system, what has gone wrong?

Hello Nicole and welcome to Seven Forums.

Since you've already done a reinstall of Windows 7 and the problem has returned, I think I'd start looking at hardware issues. Perhaps a hard drive, RAM, motherboard, etc that's failing. One of the Forum experts has prepared a couple of troubleshooting guides that might help isolate the problem. I might start with the Memtest86 and HD Diagnostics test outlined in Steps 8 and 9, first tutorial.

NOW I'm sure what caused my problem. I had an automatic AVG update appear late Thursday night, needing a reboot. I accepted it, allowed a reboot, checked operation VERY briefly, then went to sleep. The next morning I was having exactly the same problem reported by other users of AVG - impaired browsing, have to refresh or start a new page to get the screen updates, etc.

I have Zone Alarm, but WITH AVG LinkScanner Active Surf-Shield turned off !

I tried a system restore to "last known good" from a few days before (no help), and now a new problem. I had a white bar (starts as "dotted" then goes solid) across the lower part of my screen during boot, and delayed boot. I then went back to original restore point, but NO LUCK on the browsing (still bad), and STILL the white bar!!!

I know hardware is ok, it works fine when I install a Linux disk and run from that. Windows is the problem. So... I think I can fix the browsing by either losing or fixing AVG, but HOW DO I GET RID OF THE WHITE BAR?!?

Thanks!

A:White Bar during XP boot, boot slow

Hello RogerDavis

I have never seen your "white bar" problem.

Uninstall AVG and see if it is gone.
If all is well try re-downloading and installing a fresh copy of AVG

Or try Avast free antivirus which is very good

Hi,
I wonder if anyone can help me please?

I’m trying to get an old MeshPC going.
It has an Asus 7ZXE-F8 Mobo
And an Excelstor J680 80GB HD. with XP Pro on it

I have cloned this HD disk from the PC I am discontinuing use of, and it works in this PC when tested.

However it will not boot up in the Mesh PC

I used to get messages about boot record and I rebuilt it (“successfully” it said) according to this.
http://icrontic.com/article/repair_windows_xp

Now it sticks at the screen after the “which system” choices.
The white bar fills out across the bottom and then FREEZES

I have successfully flashed the BIOS….no difference.
If I try Safe Mode it freezes when all the lines of script load
VGA mode also fails
I still get a brief message “searching for boot record from floppy”
Is it important the the black screen that asks which OS to load has three versions (ways of saying) XP Pro?

Many Thanks

Len

A:Why does my PC freeze on boot (at the white bar)?

So the installed version of Windows came from another computer? If so then that could be the problem. Windows wasn't designed to be moved from one computer to another without being reinstall. Boot from the Windows disc and reinstall Windows.

Also,

Three versions being listed suggests its been reinstalled several times or is/was multi-booted. If this is an older computer that you have already got all the data off it, then I would be booting from the Windows disc, deleting all the partitions and reinstall a fresh copy of Windows.

I have a compal el80 and last night it worked fine and ive never had a problem with my screen. Today i open it up and my screen is white. Well its actually like sorta grayish white. I can hook it up to a monitor and it asked me to do a recovery thing to restore to a earlier date. Im using windows 7 btw. So after all thats done it works fine when plugged into a monitor. I took it apart to check the ribbon cable and everything but nothing seemed loose. Is my LCD burnt out or the inverter bad? Maybe it could even be a cable still and I did a crappy job checking. Any would would be appreciated thanks.

Man, I'm going nuts!

I'm trying to install W7x64 onto a custom rig. Parts are a few years old but they're still good, however I'm running into a host of problems. I need some advice as to how to proceed.

Here are the relevant specs of my system....
-MoBo: Gigabyte GA-MA69GM-S2H (also has onboard ATI X1200, which doesn't officially support W7)
-CPU: AMD Athlon X2 6000+
-Video: GeForce 7200GS (PCIe)
-RAM: DDR2 800 2gb x 3chips (total of 6gb)

Here are the problems I'm running into

1) With all of the above hardware installed, W7x64 runs into a BSOD right before it loads. If I remove the GeForce card, Windows will load semi-properly. See item #2
2) With using the MoBo's onboard VC, Windows will load properly, up until the logon screen. At which point the screen is completely white, but I do have control of the mouse. Can't tell if keyboard works.
3) If I boot with the onboard VC and ONLY 1 stick of RAM (2gb, slot doesn't matter, nor does the specific chip), W7 will actually load correctly.

So.... I realize I pretty much have to invest in SOME new hardware. I just want to buy the minimum amount of components so I can run W7x64. Ultimately if I bought a new MB/CPU/VC/RAM I'd be in good shape, but my wallet would be a few hundred $$$ less.

Is my MOBO decent enough so I could just buy a new video card and be done with it (same RAM/MB/CPU)? The system's plenty fast enough (when I was running XP), it's just the headaches with W7 that's causing me to consider new parts... Read more

HI Guys
I have just bought a VICO MARCUS 5 dash cam which is not being recognized in my desktop but working OK in the laptop.

The same disk was used on both computers which is Win 7 home premium service pack 1, first of all both computers did not recognize the dash cam but after trolling the internet a suggestion was plug in dash cam first before turning computer on and it worked fine on the laptop but still not working on the desktop.

I have gone into device manager and all usb drivers are installed ok I have also gone in and done add a device but still the same problem it does not add the dash cam.

Any help would be appreciated because it is beginning to annoy now.

Cheers
Norman

Hi are you plugging it in the front or rear ports, I would suggest the rear as they have better power.

How does one automatically make a long (alt-0151) dash appear in fields that are a value of zero ion excel 2000?

A:Dash for Zero in Excel?

pick the entire spreadsheet with the little square on the upper left of the sheet. Right click - format cells - and go to custom and find this _(* #,##0_);_(* (#,##0);_(* "-"_);_(@_)

When you do this anytime you enter a zero in any cell you'll have the - you want.

How do I get rid of Dash? My dtr d/l it and I don't want it! It doesn't have an uninstall feature and it doesn't come-up in my add/remove programs files.

A:Uninstall Dash

Delete all the files in Windows Explorer associated with that program. The files will be in whatever folder you installed that program into. Hopefully you created a seperate folder to put that program into. That would make it easy to locate them.

What is Dash anyway? What's it do? Do you have a website link for it? Maybe one of us could download it and give you a list of the files to delete. Or perhaps you could email the program writers and have them tell you what files to remove.

Hi,

Are your specs right?

You are showing that you only 503MB of RAM or is that your hard drive space.

What is the exact model of your PC & do you have a internal or a additional graphics card? Also do you have the correct drivers?

Nvidia = Nvidia Autodetect

ATi = AMD Driver Autodetect

My Gateway computer froze up, so i shut it off by using the power butter. When i turn it back on, all a get is a blinking dash on the top left. I tried rebooting and pressing F8 in order to try a safe mode, but it just goes back to the blinking dash.

Hello freyjr

You will need an XP installation CD to fix this. It is OK to borrow one if need be just to run this fix.

Configure your PC to boot from CD if it isn't already set up that way. You may need to enter the BIOS to configure the PC to boot from the CD.
Set the boot order to
Floppy (if present)
CDROM
Hard Disk
SAVE and EXIT

Start your PC with the XP Setup CD in the drive. When you see the "Press any key to boot from CD..." prompt, do so and let the CD-based boot process begin.

When the Recovery Console option is offered ("Press R to start the Recovery Console"), do so. You may be asked which Windows installation to enter, in which case type the number of the Windows installation you wish to work on (usually "1").

When prompted, enter the Administrator's password for that Windows installation. If you did not set a password just press ENTER

At the command prompt, type
fixmbr
ENTER

Then type
fixboot
ENTER

Type
Exit
ENTER
to leave the Recovery Console and reboot the PC

My laptop is a IBM Thinkpad T40, which i had to rebuild using parts from another T40
It has a 1.5 GHz Processor Intel, Centrino Mobile
512MB of RAM
A 40GB HDD
and Windows XP Pro Completely updated
Upon a rexent start up, after turning it off last night normally, it ceased functioning.
Now after the IBM Thinkpad start screen it merely displays a flashing white dash in the upper left corner. I have some files on there that hadn't been backed up. (I back up every Friday it died on a Thursday of all the rotten luck.) Suggestions about what i can do to get it working again?

A:Flashing Dash

Take the drive out, mount it in an external enclosure, attach it to a working computer by USB cord and copy out files that you can access. After that run hard drive diagnostic utilities like hitach drive fitness test and check to make sure it is completely fine before reinstalling in the original computer. You can try booting into safe mode, or last known good configuration or you can try a repair install of the OS. If nothing else works, format and reinstall the OS from scratch.

Weird stuff is happening. Recently our expired domain was picked up by another company. As soon as that happened, no one could access exchange through VPN. You can ping the server by its IP, but no longer by it's name. After talking to Dell, they told me to go into the cleints PC and take out the mydomain.com from the suffix. That worked until the PC went into standby, then it could no longer access exchange. Had to reboot in order to get it back. Well, Dell said they can no longer help me, have to call Microsoft. But it still seems like this is a DNS issue with our old domain. When we ping our server by name, it resolves to the new owners of our old domain. So it seems like a pointer needs to be in place some how. Any thoughts on this. Thanks.

If your no longer have a public domain you can access everything by the IP addresses of the destination servers.

If the VPN clients were connecting to a DNS name, e.g. vpn.yourcompany.com, they will be able to connect to the old IP associated with that entry. The same goes for the Exchange server, if it was mail.yourcompany.com they will be able to connect to it with the current IP address.

It depends on what you have in place for the VPN if the netbios names will connect you to your internal server. Since you lost your domain name you'll have to either purchase a new one with a free DNS... Read more

Turn off system restore by right clicking on My Computer and go to Properties->System Restore and check the box where it says ?Turn off System Restore?. Click Apply and then OK. Restart your computer. After we are finished with your log file and verified that it?s clean, you may turn it back on and create a new restore point.

Go to My Computer->Tools->Folder Options->View tab and make sure that Show hidden files and folders is enabled. Also make sure that the System Files and Folders are showing/visible also.

Then, open Hijack this and click the ?config? button in the ?other stuff? area. Then, click ?misc tools?, then ?open process manager?. Please ?kill? the following processes (you must kill them one at a time):

I own an M58p 6209-D71 and want to upgrade to 16gb of RAM. The latest BIOS allows 4gb sticks and according to Intel, regarding the Q45 chipset, the mainboard allows up to 16gb of RAM on [email protected] (and up to 8gb on [email protected]), Will the 16 option be possible? Thanks in advance

A:M58p with 16gb of RAM

Check out both the Kingston and Crucial memory websites for your specific model for what is possible for memory upgrades.

Both companies have a 100% guarantee (and lifetime warranty) for system model specific memory to be compatible with that system and it's factory memory.

Hello,
I am trying to learn about Measured Boot in Windows Server 2012 (and Windows 8).  This page:

Refers to a whitepaper that is being written.  I would like access to this whitepaper and would be very happy to help review a draft of this document.
Kind Regards,
