laptop sound bugging out + strange twist (sound card?)

Q: laptop sound bugging out + strange twist (sound card?)

my lenovo laptop was running fine, but all of a sudden the sound started freaking out and about every second or so, the sound would cut out, and cut back in,

ex. im playing a video and the people are talking, but it sounds like
"th--- is h--- fin---- compu----" or something like that.

the weird part is, the speakers arent working, but when i plug in my headphones, sound starts working, out of the speakers, while the headphones are plugged in with no sound coming out of the headphones, and thats pretty strange. but it gets stranger, pretty much anything plugged into the audio jack would make the speakers start working, even if it is just an adapter for another thing, and not even a headphone...

so i checked the sound in the control panel, and i said that it "could not detect sound card, restart and it will try to find it" or something, so i restarted and the problem still happened, but this time, the control panel says that "your device is working properly" when its obviously not.

ive looked on the microsoft support page and followed the instructions, no help. lenovo support? no help.

ive tried running a troubleshoot on the audio playback, but it said that it could not detect the problem,

ive checked the device manager and under the video, sound and game controllers, it has listed "Conexant 20671 SmartAudio HD", and "Intel(R) Display Audio" and they both are listed as "working properly" (nope)
im guessing one of these is the integrated audio processor, because laptops dont normally have "sound cards" but the they do have the above.

not sure what to do, ive consulted some of my more tech minded friends and they consistently say its probably an audio card error, but dont know how to fix it. *sigh*

hopefully i can get some help here.

Preferred Solution: laptop sound bugging out + strange twist (sound card?)

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

A:Aureal Vortex 8810 Sound card running XP keeps bugging out

Hmm, maybe you need updated drivers, i remember that the Vortex sound cards had little problems with XP, Vortex main website doesnt exsist any more so try:

http://www.soundcard-drivers.com/

and search for your sound card, update the drivers to the latest you can, and try again, sorry i can't help more

http://www.soundcard-drivers.com/drivers/63/63192.htm <-- i think this is yours?

EDIT: im not even sure there was a solution to this XP issue, if above doesnt work try maybe rolling back the drivers to 2000, or let the card install the drivers itself though plug and play...

Ultimatly if none of this works, a new Sound card won't be far from the solution, Vortex have problems with XP unfortunatly...

I recently purchased all new components and built a new PC. I have everythnig installed, all of the latest drivers, and everything seems fine... Until I try to run ventrilo on my PC.

Ventrilo will work for a minute or two, then all the sound on my PC will stop working. The only way to get the sound back on is to either restart the computer or reinstall the sound driver.

I am using onboard realtek sound, and an intel DP55KG mobo. Windows Vista Home Premium x64 updated completely including SP2.

Does anyone have any tips to help me get this issue to go away? Thank you in advance.

Howdy,
I've never worked with 5.1 surround sound on my PC before and it's proving to be a headache.

I recently bought a Dynex 5.1 surround sound card (VIA Envy24 family, so it can't be that bad) to supplement a Creative Creative SBS 5.1 speaker set. The install went great, and when I got to the config screen it seemed that everything was working correctly. It has a utility that gives me a diagram of my speakers, and when I click on one, the respective speaker makes a drumming noise. All of my speakers work fine in that config screen.

...But only in that config screen.

In XP, only the front two speakers work. The rest are silent. I have tried changing the speaker type in XP to 5.1, still no-go. Half-Life 2 does play sound from all my speakers, but in the sound test, the same sound comes out of each speaker. (For example, when the voice says "front right" I'll hear it out of every speaker.) Otherwise, no program in XP that produces sound will make noise from any speakers but the front two.

My question to you, friends, is this:
Buh?

Hi.

I have a problem:
Yesterday when I was playing a game on my PC a strange sound started coming form my graphics card. I have never experienced this before.
I have an ATI Radeon HD 5870.

At first I thought it was one of the fans, so I removed the graphics card and cleaned the cooler and the fans as much as possible. I also cleaned the side fan of my chassi. The sound is still there.
I tried controlling the graphics cards fans manually and setting them to 100%. I could hear the fans speed up, but the annoying sound was gone.

Whenever I start a game, movie or other thing that makes my graphics card work the sound returns.
I filmed a video using my cell phone to illustrate the sound:

Strange sound - YouTube

Does anyone know what the sound is? Is it possible to fix it?
Can I be certain that the sound is coming from my graphics card?

Thanks in advance.

A:Strange sound coming from graphics card

other suspects could be the CPU cooler.

try using a finger (or a pen) to momentarily stop (a second or so, not much more) the graphic card fan, then cpu fan and then chassis fan when you hear this noise. if it stops when the fan is stopped, then you found the device responsible of the noise.

fans do similar annoying sounds when getting older.

Hi all... i have an unusual sound issue. After much searching and reading of various posts on various computer related forums, not finding an answer, i have decided to post up.

i have a newish (about 12months old, althon 3000) computer. recently i have been running into some issues with sound. At first i thought the sound just 'dropped out'. after rebooting the computer it comes back on again. after playing some music and video files it will 'drop out' again. and the only way to restore it is to reboot.

The funny thing is that the sound doesnt actually stop altogther. i have discovered that if i turn my desktop speakers all the way up i can actually just still hear all the sounds. they are barely audible but if you listen carefully, they are definately still there... its like it defaults to some preset really low level...?! i dont get it?!

i have checked the device manager, it informs me that all the drivers are current and working. there doesnt seem to be an error anywhere.?

if anyone has any suggestions it would be greatly appreciated. it doesnt seem to affect the running of my computer, its more annoying than anything.

thanks for taking the time to read...

OK.

I have a Dell Laptop and just twice heard a sound that resembled expelling compressed air from the back, sort of like when you squash a cardboard drinks carton. The sound both times was very brief ie less than a second, not something sustained.

The laptop is up on a stand, so there is no heat build up, either under or behind it. I put on a Youtube vid as that usually makes the fan/s spin up ... and they did so with no problem.

No other faults as far as I can tell, either with the display, sound, no slow downs or reboots of any kind.

- Any ideas what the sound could be ?

I just Googled but all similar issues were caused by heat / blocked air vents which is not the cause in my case.

Hello. My dell latitude D505 laptop was making a loud winding noise underneath(facing me) the left side closest to the screen. Underneath that location is a fan. Why it was making such a loud winding noise, It sounded similar to an old tape player rewinding a cassette. I don't know but I do know it's never done that before.

Does anyone know what this could be and is it safe to use my computer even though the winding noise stopped? It lasted for at least a few hours, then suddenly stopped.

Thank you.

A:My Dell Latitude D505 laptop was making strange winding sound

Is it warm or hot in that location? It's either the HDD or CPU Fan?
If it's the CPU Fan that needs to be replaced.
If it's the HDD then backup your data or clone the HDD as the HDD is starting to go.
Normally if it's the HDD it will make clunking noises.

Here is a real dumb question.

can I buy an external sound card for my laptop?

Whenever I try to record any sounds from ( shoutcast, web streams, realplayer, etc ) the mic records all the sound from the speakers and the sound in the room.

I don't want to pay $50 for an mp3 recorder and all the ones I have tried do not record from the soundcard only from the mic.
I have read somewhere that it's an issue that is blocked from gateway.

attached is all the portable apps I have and the radio sure app.

radio sure works great ( no mic record ) I don't know how it's done but it records direct to MP3. however, many stations are unavailable. same with screamer. I use M.E.S.S.E.R. on my XP tower for years but it won't work on vista ( even if I run as xp sp2 )

thank you soooooooo much,

Hello and welcome to Techspot.

First. Go into your bios, and disable your onboard sound, and save and exit bios.

Once your computer has booted up, go into contol panel, and double click the sounds and audio devices icon.

Click on the audio tab, and set the sound playback device to your new soundcard.

Do the same for the sound recording device. Click on the voice tab and do the same. Click apply/ok.

Make sure you have the correct drivers installed for your new soundcard, and that your speakers are plugged into the new soundcard.

Ever since I got my second Video Card and went SLI I have had crippling sound problems. After playing for a while all sounds get replace with a high pitched squeal. This is only with games, not music (using WMP), DVDs (using WinDVD), and only with my sound card, not the (crappy) onboard sound (which has no problem). Some games may play for three minutes, others for close to fifty before this consistently happens. It seems to be simply subsistuting all sounds with this annoying noise. I quit the game it goes quiet, but music is now affected and DVDs have NO sound. Single GPU works fine (either card, either PCI-E slot), sound card in either PCI slot still causes the problem. I recently got a newer, better sound card but it does the exact same thing. I think it may be either a video card issue, or the motherboard. Is it something to due with the way the video card handles sound? Or the motherboard? HELP!! I really like the improved graphics (on a relative budget) that SLI brings, and don't like being hobbled like this.

Hi,

I recently purchased the Creative Sound Blaster Audigy FX and am having problems getting it to actually play any audio or record any sound.

I've browsed other threads with similar issues on this board and as such have disabled my motherboards onboard audio in my BIOS settings, have reinstalled the drivers from disc and from the Creative website, and even attempted to use Driverpack Online to download any missing drivers. However my problem still persists.

I can see that the Sound Blaster Audigy FX is present on the sound option on the control panel, but it never actually plays any sound. Additionally, whenever I try to play a test sound in the speakers advanced properties I am returned with the error "Failed to play test tone".

I've included a few screenshots that might help make things a bit more clear, and I'd be very appreciative of any help I can get with this issue.

A:Creative Sound Blaster Audigy FX Sound Card, no playback/recording

First thing, I assume you have correctly attached your speakers to the new SoundBlaster.

As you have a separate sound card, did you disable any on-board (on the motherboard) audio in the BIOS? If not, that is the first step. The on-board, is still enabled, can conflict with the SoundBlaster.

Also, temporarily disable the AMD HD audio in the Device Manager for testing (the AMD is for HDMI audio). Reboot after doing this.

Finally, although this has may not have any affect on playback, the default recording device should be the SoundBlaster "What You Hear". In the Recording sound panel, RIGHT click in an empty area and then check to show Disconnected and Disabled devices. If the SoundBlaster was installed correctly What You Hear should now show up and you can enable it and make it the default recording device.

I recently purchased a 5 1/4" multimedia panel for my computer. I have no manual for the card and unable to find anything online on how to hookup the individual pins to my sound card. Can anyone help??

A:Connecting sound pins from front panel to sound card

I can't find any detailed information. In any case, I don't know why you would want separate speaker outputs on the front panel. Most of the bay panels I've seen have standard features like mic in, headphone out, and misc other connections like USB, Firewire, etc.. I've not seen any with individual (ie: left speaker, right speaker, center speaker) connections, and it would clutter your front panel having all of the those cables hanging.

Hey everyone!

I'm having some serious problems with my sound card over here. I have an Asus P4SDX motherboard that SUPPOSEDLY has an integrated sound card, but it doesn't seem to be working. We're talking no headphones, no speakers, NOTHING. I downloaded and installed the AC97 sound drivers and it's STILL not working. Windows Media Player gives me an error that says "Windows Media Player cannot play the file because there is a problem with your sound device. There may not be a sound device installed on your computer, it may be in use by another program, or it may not be functioning properly."

I've tried Microsoft's troubleshooter, too, and it didn't tell me anything that I hadn't already tried.

I'm new to this whole taking care of my own computer thing b/c I'm off at college now and it's really starting to frustrate me. I know more a/b computers than most girls do but apparently it's not enough! Any help would be GREATLY appreciated!

Thanks!

A:distorted sound in vista/createiv x-fi titanium sound card

I had a Creative X-Fi XtremeMusic in my rig and I constantly had distorted audio - manifesting in the form of 'crackly', echoing sounds. Really frustrating, I tried all kinds of solutions including a clean uninstall of the audio drivers, replugging the sound card in a different PCI slot, etc. For a while everything would be fine, and then back into crunchy-sound-land...

My rig used to have Windows XP Pro as the OS, and the sound card worked perfectly. It was only after I changed the OS to Vista that the woes began.

This is probably not the solution you want to hear, but after 2 years of despair I flogged the card on eBay and bought myself an Auzen X-Fi Prelude 7.1 card. Although that is still an X-Fi it works beautifully in Vista, absolutely no problem with the sound since.

Hi! I just installed a new mother board and cpu. Its an ECS 755-A2 mother board with a 3200+ AMD Sempron/64-bit CPU. It's not the best, but i was trying to save money.

Before, I had a soyo and a 2800+ AMD Athlon XP and i had the Sound Blaster Live 5.1. Now with this ECS mb, the sound card doesn't get detected anymore, even in device manager. I downloaded the new driver for the Sound Blaster Live 5.1 from their official website and when I came to install it... it said that there were no Sound Blaster cards detected on my computer even though it was securely pushed in IN a pci slot!!

Then I decided that I don't need sound blaster so i installed the driver for the integrated sound card on my mb (realtek AC-97) and everything LOOKS fine according to their program and the control panel (sound and audio options) but i dont receive any sound from anything at all. I was planning on buying a NEW sound card but then i decided to test this Sound Blaster Live 5.1 on my bro's computer. Ironically, it was detected on his 1.2 ghz AMD Athlon Thunderbird and now i'm puzzled as why it wasn't detected on mine.

What solutions have I tried?

I installed numerous drivers for both the sound blaster and the integrated sound card repeatedly and there wasn't any hope.

I re-installed the OS twice (I'm willing to do a third though)

I don't know what else I can try.. can anyone help and please don't say the mother board :[?

The problem might just be the new board, it may not support the sound card, or maybe it really isn't plugged in all the way.

Happened to me with my Firewire card took me forever to put the dump thing in I keep pushin and pushin, but not to hard because you'll break the card and you don't want to do that.

so just keep pushin slowly it may look like it is in but it probably really isn't

I hope creative can help you with your problem.

Or ot may be the new processor/ board combination, why didn't you just get the Atholon 64 instead of the Septeron 64.

I don't think many cards are compatible with that

Been having major issues playing GTA IV.

First, the sound kept getting cut during gaming. When I exited the game, there was no sound in Windows either. I had to reboot to get sound but after a couple of minutes, the sound cut off again and I wasn't even gaming then. Video playback became really laggy (YouTube played videos as if in slow motion) and there was no sound.

I had to reboot the PC several times. Unisntalled sound card (through Device Manager) and then reinstalled it as well as the latest drivers. Still had same issue when I tried playing GTA IV.

Today, I got consecutive BSODs while playing GTA IV. I've had several issues with GTA IV like missing textures, no sound, freezing (at loading screens), CTD (crash to desktop) etc. Tried reinstalling the game several times from scratch and even tried different hard drive but none of them work(ed).

I'm playing GTA IV heavily modded (Gionight ENB mod with several custom cars/weapons etc.) but my computer is a beast and it should be able to handle it easily.

My specs:

CPU: i7 990X
Mainboard: Asus P6T7 WS Supercomputer
Memory: 12GB Corsair Domintar 1600MHz
Hard Drive: 32GB SLC SSD x2 (RAID-0)
Video: EVGA GTX-580 3GB Tri-SLI
Sound: Creative SoundBlaster X-Fi Titanium HD
Power Supply: PC Power & Cooling 1200W
OS: Windows 7 Ultimate x64 SP1

The first BSOD was STOP code 0x124 and that was with stock clocks for the GPU. The second BSOD was STOP code 0x1000007e and that was with GPUs OC'd to 850MHz.

I have installed Win XP Pro SP2 (had Win 7 installed and couldn't run half my games). Now the games run fine but no sound! I know this is because I'm relying on the on-board sound on the (I have been told by my brother-in-law who used to own the pc!) Realtek motherboard as the soundcard broke 6 months ago (was a Creative Soundblaster 16 or AWE 32 Compatible (WDM)) and was removed.

When I installed Win XP yesterday everything runs fine but no sound. In the Device Manager I have problems with the:

I don't understand why it's even picking up the sound card when it's not plugged in!

I am so close to having my new audio system established. On the headphone side, all I need to do is place my order. However, I've run into a bit of a snag considering the sound card.

I was originally recommended the Sound Blaster Z to pair with my headphones. Exact card here, the one with the external microphone since I'll need it. Unfortunately, this sound card specifies Windows 7 and 8 as supported operating systems. I asked if it would still work for Vista, but the other forum (headphone forum) seemed to think that it wouldn't, unfortunately. I'm not looking to upgrade my OS. As horrible and clunky as it is, I've made it work for me.

IF it would work with Vista, than just let me know and read no further. If not, I'd love if I could get some recommendations for a comparable card.

I'm looking for the best sound card possible, given my physical and operational specs. I have PCI-E slots 1x and 4x free, and my OS is Windows Vista Ultimate 32x. The card will support both gaming and music, though I'm more concerned with gaming than music at this point. I'm not looking to drop a bundle (the SB-Z was a little on the expensive side) but as high as 70 or 80 is acceptable. Please let me know if you have any suggestions. I'm raring to place my orders, haha.

I'm looking to buy the Creative Lab Sound Blaster Audigy Platinum eX sound card, but I'm not sure how compatible it is with my current system, which is an HP Pavilion 7960. It says you need an available adjacent slot to the PCI card for the Audigy extension, which I don't know what it means.

Also, I saw a picture of it online and I see that it comes with two cards and a black box. I figure that one card is supposed to be the actual sound card, and the other is this mysterious Audigy extension. But what is the black box?

I've been having problems with my sound card (in the title) and that problem is that I cannot hear any sound come out of it but the strange thing is the little green bar that indicates sound is coming through and how loud it is keeps going up and down as I play music.

Anyway the strange thing is the windows default sound thingy works perfectly fine, if any of oyu kind people could help me that would be fantastic!

Hi,
I'm working on husband's pc, it is an HP Media Ctr. set up. Pavilion 4100e. We had to do a System Restore when pc was over run with virus/trojan infections. SR resulted in some lost Driver/Controller files, including ethernet and sound card. I have recovered all Driver/Controller files-- and everything is working except for sound.

I have uninstalled Creative Audigy Audio Processor (through Device Manager) and reinstalled (through Found New Hardware). I have run dxdiag, only to find "device cannot start" under problem devices/sound card.

Any suggestions on how to get this to work again? I cannot use System Restore to go back to when it was working, because that would take me back to all the virus/trojan infections and nothing was working.

Any help would be appreciated~

Thanks,

Tricia

I've got an Asus Crosshair V Formula motherboard that I couldn't get any sound on my Onkyo HT-R550 receiver via the onboard optical output (Win 7 Ultimate 64 bit OS) I was planning on getting a nicer sound card anyway, so I bought the Asus Xonar Essence ST.

Installed that sound card but alas, I still have the same problem.

Speaker and headphone outputs work, but no signal is recognized by the receiver via the S/PDIF. I know that the cable and receiver are fine, I still have my previous computer which is running Win XP and it has been sending audio via the same cable to the same receiver for years. It still works if I hook it up. It has an Asus M2N-SLI Deluxe motherboard and an HT Omega Striker 7.1 audio card. Both the onboard and sound card optical output work with the optical out to the receiver.

With my current computer the Win 7 "Sound" window displays signal on the audio meter when I play audio or when I use the "Test" function. But no signal is recognized by the receiver. I've tried every format and sample rate. I've uninstalled all drivers and reinstalled. I've used DH Driver Cleaner to sweep out all previous existing audio drivers. I've also had the onboard disabled since I originally installed the card. I've tried everything I can think of and manipulated all the settings in the Xonar Essence ST Audio Center software that are relevant. I think I've tried everything, but I'm hoping I'm wrong. I've submitted this to Asus technical, but it's been... Read more

although the xonar panel will control almost all functions for that, make sure that windows has it's default audio device set to the spdif card you want. If it's set to speakers HD AUDIO (hd audio being one of the cards you want) will only output through analog. Control Panel>hardware and sound>sound. Select the card that you want and make sure u select one of the options that also says spdif. Click set default, apply and it should work. Sorry if you have already tried this. But it's the first thing that comes to mind right now.

Hi there guys. I came to this forum a while back and i was really pleased with how helpful you guys were when i was building my computer. Uh, in that regard, my specs are

EVGA 122-CK-NF68-T1 LGA 775 NVIDIA nForce 680i SLI ATX Intel Motherboard

Thermaltake Purepower W0100RU 500W ATX 12V 2.0 Power Supply

Intel Core 2 Duo E4600 Allendale 2.4GHz LGA 775 65W Dual-Core Processor Model BX80557E4600

CORSAIR XMS2 2GB (2 x 1GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 800

The rest is irrelevant i think... geforce 8800GT graphics card, 200gb HDD.

Anyway, i don't have a sound card. I Recently got a headset/mic (Altec Lansing AHS515) and when i put the headphone/mic jack into the back of my computer (in the mobo connection) the line out or headphones work fine. However, the microphone or mic out isn't working so great. When i try to talk with it i get a really, really quiet signal if anything at all. It doesn't pick up anything at more than an inch away from my mouth, and to get a loud noise i have to put it literally in my mouth.

I'm using the realtek HD Audio Manager as it came with my mobo. I tried changing the jacks around, but it always comes up as some sort of device incompatible or some similar error.

Regarding the headset, i'm sure it's not broken- i tried it on a laptop i have and it worked fine.

So as i obviously don't have a sound card, i'm wondering if i need on... Read more

The reason for this is, that multiple posting about the same issue tends to confuse the issue; especially when they are in two different forums.
Not many of the Windows Tech Team Members venture into the Sound Forum, and vis-a-vis with the Hardware Tech team.

It's the most suspicious sound I've ever heard. It sounds exactly like fat, felt tip marker making a quick check on paper. It can also be compared to a rat sniff or a piece of paper being turned. I wear headphones and can hear this noise occasionally for up to 15 minutes. It likes to happen at night, when 'they' are active ( humor me ). Because of the sneaky, low volume, discreet, low down, creepy, stalky, shifty sound I am disposed to imagine that someone is looking through my files for credit information and they are unaware of these sounds from my sound card, or they don't care about the sound because they are safe from being caught.

Sound like I'm crazy? Just paranoid. I did say it makes me imagine. The kind of person I am is the same kind that will run system restore at a moment's notice for anything that looks suspicious or a NoScript violation. Because that sound is clearly designed to resemble a sniffing rat doing something sneaky on my computer. I tried to record the output with Audacity 1.3, but it had stopped before I had recorded anything.

My setup:

Windows XP Pro 64 bit Service Pack 2
Verizon High Speed Internet
Marvell Yukon 88E8056 PCI-E Gigabit Ethernet Controller
LinkSys Router routing to a Windows 7 laptop, WPK-PSK, TKIP
Soundblaster Live!
Avast!
SUPERAntiSpyware
NoScript
Mozilla FireFox

A:Solved: Suspicious sound coming from sound card output.

It was that Windows XP search dog. When you ctrl + f to open the search side bar in a window there is an animated dog that seems innocuous. Every 15 minutes or so it will scratch itself and make that noise twice. As long as that search side bar is open, minimized or not, that noise will persist.
