I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

When I try to open a local html file (either by right clicking on it and opening with IE, or by loading IE and then dragging and dropping a file onto it), IE immediately crashes.
Specifically, it will come up with the crash popup window "Internet Explorer has stopped working". You click "Close the program" and it does it a second time (which is normal behaviour for how IE will try only twice, to avoid an infinite loop), and then you end up still in IE on that page that says "We were unable to return you to the page you were viewing."
It is not an issue with the code or content of the html file. Even a file that just says "hello" in it will crash this way.

My Issue:

As of 4th July 2009 weekend my system has been operating quirky and buggy. In my troubles I've installed Avast Anitvirus. Now around that time, one day I can recall returning to my computer and it had shutdown on its own, although my system remains on idle the majority of the week by the way. Upon turning on the computer and booted up I got a notification window stating that Windows had been updated and restarted (turned off). At that point, when attempting to open a program (by clicking on any of my icons on the desktop) the computer would quirk and reboot. After several attempts, eventually it resulted in a continuous reboot, window would repeatedly restart. If I can remember correctly, in the process I got some prompts then eventually a dreaded blue screen perhaps something about windows couldnt find or load a file, i think it had a .dll extension. Well, in conclusion, thats when I decided to perform some tech procedures, check boot sequence, BIOS, the usual troubleshooting. Threw in the Windows XP for a Install repair. Hi Unicorn76,

Welcome to Vista Forums!

Go to: File association fixes for Windows Vista and click on the html option and fix the file association for html files. Once done, I believe IE should be able to open them.

I hope this helps. If not, post back and we'll try to find another solution.

Hello and this is my First Post

Can you help me with an annoying dialog that pops up when running shortcuts please?

I have (portable) applications located on E:

I can run those applications directly from E: without a problem - i.e. I don't get any warnings.

However if I create a shortcut to one of these applications and place the shortcut on the desktop ( on C: ), then running the shortcut causes an open file security warning (see attachment). The warning dialog claims it can't determine who created the file, because it comes from "a location outside your local network". Which is really strange because it is a locally installed hard drive.

The only explanation I have is I've used E: with a previous windows 7 installation on the same hardware, then I reformatted & reinstalled my Windows 7 partition, but kept E: untouched.

Couple of things I've tried are:
1) there is no "Unblock" button on the shortcut's properties dialog
2) Group policy editor changed to not preserve zone information
3) I couldn't find an exact match for this particular open file security warning when searching here and other forums

When I used IE, whatever information I downloaded as an html file, it just opened.
Since I use Firefox and Kaspersky, Kaspersky asks each and ever time for every file if Allow or Deny. This is very annoying.
Is there a way either in Kaspersky or somewhere in Windows XP to set this up that Kaspersky doesn't asks or block html files?

IE on my system often hangs when I attempt to open a file that I saved to my hard drive. It seems that it always happens if I save a page that contains a shockwave file. The page opens fine if I navigate from the internet, but if I attempt to open the file from my hard drive then the page hangs for ~25 seconds. After that everything works fine.

To reproduce the issue navigate to www.yahoo.com. Next, follow one of the links under "In the News". After the news page opens, save the file by clicking on the File - Save As... menu item and then under "Save as type" select "Web page, HTML only". Then click the Save button to save the file. Finally, open the saved file by clicking on the File - Open... menu item. On my system the text will appear immediately, but then IE will hang for a while, after which the advertisement will appear.

Any ideas?

Thanks a lot for any help!

I have a Hewlett Packard Vectra desktop pc
Pentium 3, 930 Mhz, 128MB ram
Windows XP home edition upgrade
This is a very strange problem, it may have to do with my registry.
After running a registry scan and fixing errors, I noticed that all
my software programs that display any kind of html, such as
Outlook Express, my html editor, my keyword research tool, and
my webpage design software, will no longer display, but instead,
a windows screen pops up prompting me to either open the file
in my browser or save it, thus, rendering my software programs
useless. I have no idea how to fix this and I don't have the technical
knowledge for this type of problem. If need be, I will reformat
the hard drive and just start over, but would rather fix the problem.
I scanned the registry twice (mistake), so I don't think I can go back to the way it was.

Any ideas? Thanks.

We use Exchange 2010 Standard and Outlook 2013. I got a new computer and made a copy of my email archive that was being stored on my Windows 8 computer under c:\users\UserName\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Outlook . Now I want to open the archive to look for an old message. Outlook 2013 won't open the file.

Error, "The file you chose is not an Outlook Data File. You must select a new file of this type."

Outlook 2013; File Menu; Open & Export; Open Outlook Data File - that will open the file browse window with the file type of Outlook Data Files listed. To show the archive, I had to change it to All Files. The file extension is hidden, but the details of it show the Type is "Outlook Data File". If I try to open it, I get the error above. Looking at the properties of the file, it is an .OST Outlook Data File.

I know that Outlook wants to open a .PST file, but I need to open an .OST file. The Exchange Server did not change. The network user did not change. The only thing that changed was the old computer was removed from Active Directory and the New Computer was added - and the network user properties was updated to the new computer.

I'm currently in the process of testing/deploying IE11 in our environment and I've begun testing on the IE11 Enterprise Site List manager.
I've read that there are a few different ways to configure the XML file to apply via GPO per the article below.  HTTP, Local Network, Local File. (https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/Dn640699.aspx)
In my isolated testing I've chosen to use the local file method which is very easy to setup and use on a testing machine.
It looks like we have the flexibility to choose how we apply the XML file, and I was curious what the best options are and why?  Also are there examples of each setup being used and the benefits/downsides to each?
Here's the options that I can see using:
1. HTTP - setup an IIS website to host the XML file.
2. Local Network (UNC) - setup a UNC path on our DFS where we store the current XML file and users would have read only access to that location.
3. Local File - We could just deploy the XML file via SCCM package/application when updates to the list are required.
Could anyone please point me towards some articles, etc, explaining the pro's and cons of these methods and why I might want to choose one over the other?  I'm leaning towards just using a DFS share and option #2 because it doesn't require us to maintain
an IIS site for it but I am curious to hear if there might be any downsides to this method, or benefits to going with another method.

I am using Windows XP SP3.

I am trying to add an "edit" action to the .html file type. I have .html associated with Firefox. I go to Tools>Folder Options>File Types> and .html isn't even listed! (Nor is .htm) So I click "New" and add the .html file type. Then I click "Advanced" and fill in the action info and hit "OK". Then I hit "Close".

It doesn't work, and then when I go back into "File Types", html is not listed anymore. Basically, Windows is ignoring my attempts to add the .html file type.

I created the .xxx file type and added actions to open with Firefox and Word. It worked perfectly.

So what is it with the .html file type that Windows won't create it or list it?

Hi frdprodsup,As I know, it is a security warning to make sure that the user really want to take an action. It's a safety feature, why don't you want to get rid of it? As a work around, I would like to propose the following suggestions:1. Change User Account Control Settings.1) Click the Start button and type: UAC in the Search box.2) Click "Change User Account Control Settings".3) Drag the slider to a lower setting.4) Click OK.2. Configure Group Policy Settings.1) Click the Start menu and type: GPedit.msc in the Search box.2) Click on gpedit.3) Navigate to the following entry:User Configuration\Administrative Templates\Windows Components\Attachment ManagerIn the right panel of the Local Group Policy Editor, find the entry: Inclusion list for moderate risk file types. Double click the entry and check "Enabled".4) Under 'Inclusion list for moderate risk file types', type the file types: .ink (shortcut types)5) Click OK and restart the computer.Best RegardsDale

hello all, i hope you'll help me out with a problem (or remnants of one) that i've been having.

earlier today just in the middle of ordinary document writing (an html file with notepad) AVG (free edition) popped up with a malware warning. the apparent culprit was an old installation file (.exe) which i thought was weird since it had been sitting on my disk for over a year with no trouble or even use beyond the first time i used it.

later i found that local html files were causing an active-x warning to pop up whenever i opened them, which is even stranger since the files are very basic, just text and a little formatting such as tables, and occasional images. although the messages were annoying i decided to leave fixing the problem till later in the day, and continued with my documents and the occasional net browse to check facts etc.

later still suddenly another AVG warning came up, this time saying that iexplore.exe was infected with blackhole. AVG cleaned up, but the active-x warnings from local pages that have no active-x or any script of any kind are continuing which has left me worried. my guess is that my iexplore.exe file got infected, but i don't what infected it, how to fix it, or if the infection is completely gone. i find it hard to believe that the original culprit was an old installation file.

i ran a full malwarebytes scan which turned up nothing, ran hijackthis also which showed nothing i couldn't identify, looked thru the current version - ... Read more

Hi all,

A new program (Autodesk Revit architecture 2009) I have installed opens an HTML file on startup (a recent files page named index.html)

When it comes to starting the program, I get a pop up informing me of a file download and whether I want to open or save it.

Problem is that it should just open it automatically...

When I click 'open' internet explorer does nothing with it. (I have managed to open it from here in firefox ((which proves the file is valid - but is useless in firefox)), but it still won't open automatically in Revit).

The html is created on the fly in the C:\temp folder.

When I close this message and move on to try and register the program,
another html attempts to open and I get the same problem... Which means the programme is totally un-usable!

Why does my XP all of a sudden not recognize html files from this program???

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

I just upgraded to IE 8 on Vista Business SP2 and I can't open any HTML emails that I receive in Outlook 2007. I looked at the settings but I can't see anything to allow these. Any ideas out there, I'm sure it's a simple option somewhere?

Hello and welcome to TSF!

From your Outlook 2007 verify that HTML is the Default format. Tools => Options =>Mail Format.

I am trying to make a website for a friend who passed. I would like to make a type of open forum so that people can leave pictures and stories and what not. I got the domain name and all that. I was looking around to find some html code to make a open forum and could not find any. Any help would be much appreciated. I will be using notepad or frontpage or similar programs.

A:HTML Open Forum

I would recommend that you use phpBB as a good way to help post pics, etc, for your friend. I'm sorry to hear about this.

I'd recommend you use http://www.bluehost.com/ or http://www.servage.net/ for your hosting needs. I would personally recommend Servage.net.

If you need help setting up the forums, etc, the support staff at either one of these places should be able to provide adequate help. I'm sure someone here would be willing to help, and I would be willing to more than help you out if you need any help with setting these forums up.

I have a student video disk for a class I'm taking online (GO! for Microsoft Office). The videos are in html format, and a week ago, I was able to open and view them. Now, the disk autoruns, and I can view the list of videos on the disk; however, when I click on a video to watch it, I get this message - "cannot locate the application for this file type". If I go into the disk folder, right click on one of the files, and click "open with", it shows Internet Explorer as the recommended application to open with. If I click ok, it then opens a window, but it's just blank. I don't get the error message this way, but it still won't play the video.

Windows 7 (64 bit)
Internet Explorer 9

Thanks for any assistance you can be.

A:Cannot open html files

html is for webpages. There may be video links embedded in the webpage or links to the videos, but the html files are not the videos.

With that said, I would expect something has changed one or some the file associations. See the following links:

Win XP (SP) preinstalled with IE6 working well since about 2 years but without using any WWW access.
Starting IE 6 with off- and online HTML pages opens the program in the taskbar but refuses to open as window
Upgrade to IE 7 didn t resolve the problem, but everything works well in protected mode

Other efforts that didn t help:
Resetting the IE to default, starting without add-ons, cleaning temp files, deinstalling antivirus software, deactivating firewall, host file seems OK with just the entry of the local host

Firefox works well on and offline ...

It seems strange that IE seems to read the page (gives its correct name in the taskbar) but cannot open the window. If I right mouse click on maximize nothing changes.

Hello so I have this situation regarding my windows 8.1 machine and how it connects to my Windows Server 2012 machine.

I have my Windows server machine directly connected to the internet on one ethernet port and the other is on a private network.

My windows 8.1 Machine is also on this private network( and whenever I attempt to take files from my Windows server machine using its Local ip address it begins a connection from the Windows Server 2012 machines WAN IP to the local even
though the established connection happened via file sharing by direct network ip address. This connection uses up all the throughput from my router causing every machine on the network to experience lag online.

I also have Windows 7 machines and this issue does not occur when taking files from the server machine as it does it through LAN.

I don't understand how the Windows 8.1 machine can even know my Server 2012 machines IP address or why its deciding to do these file transfers over the internet rather then LAN.

Here's an example since its a very difficult issue to explain.

I have a Private network ( this network reaches the internet from WAN

In this network I have machines Windows 8.1 ( and Windows server 2012 (

I have a Windows Server 2012 Machine which reaches the internet directly from WAN This machine has another nic located on the private network as stated abov... Read more

Hello everyone,

I have a bat file that is launched when a torrent finishes downloading on my laptop which launched robocopy to copy it to my server computer.

I want to have the server run a few programs to extract the file and move it to the correct directory structure.

I want to launch a bat file on the server from the first bat file using the call command, however I am not sure if this command will cause my server to execute the bat or my laptop to execute the bat.

Is there a way to get my server to run the bat from the bat that is run on my laptop?

I think that if I use the call command that it will run the called bat on my laptop even though the bat is located on my server.

Thanks in advance

A:Starting a bat file on networked computer from local bat file question

Your exactly correct that the batch file will run on your laptop. The only way to run from the server is to use Remote desktop RDP from your machine to the server which will allow you to run the program in the server's memory.
Or, you could have a planned event (Task Manager) on your server which would check to see if the file exists at some point in time and then run the batch program in the servers memory space.

Hi all,

Since many years we are using custom BMP files as icon for one of our programs. That has always worked correctly, until Windows 8 (and Windows Server 2012) came. When we create the shortcut on our desktop and we browse to the network location where the BMP
file is and we click ok, we see the icon correctly in the "preview", but as soon as I click OK twice and I go back to the desktop, the shortcut is white, with no icon.

But when I place the BMP file on the local drive and I browse to it, it displays correctly in the previewer AND on the desktop.
This behaviour occurs on both Windows 8 and Windows Server 2012. Who knows how to resolve this?

Hey guys,
