I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

Mcoderators - my apologies if this is not in the correct forum, please move if required...
I purchased my Optiplex 5050 in May 2017.  It came in a sealed box and I had to do the usual set up.  My 3 year warranty runs until 22/05/2020.
A few days ago looking under saved logs in Event Viewer I was surprised to find ~400 combined entries under Application, Security and System.  These are all dated 13/02/2016 - 13 months before I got the Optiplex.  These presumably are the entries I see saved in Logs on my C drive.
Two things confuse me here - and I  ‘hope’  there is a logical explanation.
(a)  These logs relate to a date 15 months before I purchased the computer, and(b)  I’ve re-installed the OS on more than one occassion since I purchased the Optiplex so how can I have logs dating back to last year...?
I’m intrigued - and a bit concerned at this...

A:How old is my Dell Optiplex 5050 ???

Drives imaged at a specific time will have files dated to when they were created..  This is not the date that your machine was made. Either way its entirely irrelevant.  Your warranty is based on the ship date.

Hi,
I've a question regarding the M.2 on Dell Optiplex 5050 & 7050.
On the US website the M.2 only supports storage, but on the BR and PT websites the M.2 is for wifi. I'm guessing there's an error on BR and PT website, right?

I have an Optiplex 5040 with an i7 and a free PCI-E 16x slot. I want to add a Geforce 1070 in this machine but I need a larger PSU to support it. Can I remove the factory one and install a 800w PSU and just use a 24-pin to 8-pin adapter cable to supply power to the Mobo while having the connections for the new graphics card?

Hello,
I've just purchased a Dell OptiPlex 5050 to replace my aging Dimension 9150 - jumping from XP to W10 in one go!  The OptiPlex has an I5 7500 cpu, 8gb of ram and a 256 gb ssd and is a nice machine but the display is not very good...
The print on the desktop is not very sharp and I'm wondering if anyone here could give me some idea why this should be so, presumably there's an adjustment some where that needs tweaking.  Very obvious is the white lettering on background I get when I right click the Start button.  This lettering also has shadows or tails behind the words.
I've had a look around various settings but don't wish to tinker to much in case I cause problems - and the OptiPlex does not have a restore partition on the ssd...
Now I 'think' the desktop text may not have had this problem initially and I'm wondering if I've accidentally changed something though I have been pretty cautious.
A couple of things I have tried include adjusting the performance options in Visual Effects (system properties - settings) but there's precious little effect.  I've also turned on ClearType which was initially off.
The system is usable but doesn't look very nice, text appearing to be generally fuzzy and lacking vibrancy.  I've tried the monitor with another computer and it's ok so it's obviously the OptiPlex.
Anyone here any ideas please?

Hello,
A few weeks ago I acquired a DELL Optiplex 5050 running Windows 10 Pro and I’m still finding my way around the machine and the operating system...  Looking at the Event Viewer initially caused me some concern but various sites on the ‘net confirm that others are experiencing similar errors.
One of these issues relates to DELL and hopefully someone on here may be able to help.
When I run various diagnostic checks via the DELL UK Support webpages I then find that Dell System Detect brings up an error 0 in my Event Viewer.  Last night I uninstalled Dell System Detect and re-installed it but the errors still occur.  What is causing this?
Also every time I connect to the DELL UK Support site to check for driver updates I’m offered the Intel Management Engine Components Installer version 11.60.1047, A01.  I have downloaded and installed this on more than one occasion but it still comes up every time I check for driver updates.  I see this was a documented issue some time ago, was it ever sorted or does it still exist and if so I can presumably ignore it?
Thank you,
John

I'm getting a problem with my computer. Whenever i'm on it, anytime just randomly it will restart sometime before an hour and when it does restart i get a blue screen, sometimes green, purple, brown...etc.. I dont get the blue screen of death with all the info on it, i just get a solid different colours screen, not navy blue like the bsod (blue screen of death) but normal blue or other colours. After i get the screen the only thing i can do is turn it off by the power button. Does anyone know what the problem is?

I have deleted and reinstall the windows 10 on it with the hope that if its a software problem, all will be cure but no joy!

Hi,

Sorry if this is a really lame question, but I have almost no experience with computer hardware.
I just bought a new Dell Optiplex 780 to run a sound system in a theater, and I need to transfer the sound card from the old computer to the new (for reference, its a Delta M-Audio Audiophile 2496), but the new Dell came in a low profile case, and the card doesn't fit.
So the best option seems to be to just buy a cheap (20-30 dollar) full size case and transfer the computer wholesale over so the PCI card fits, but I've been told that the style of case matters.
Any suggestions as to a good case at a cheap price that the components will fit in properly would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

A:Dell Optiplex needs new case

Unfortunately you can't. These are proprietary Dell designs and they do not fit any standard case on the market.

So you need to use either a USB sound card, a half-height sound card, or buy a different computer.

I am trying to get an Optiplex 5040 build from a USB boot flash drive, but it just won't even get to the task sequence (SCCM 2007). It's OK if I boot from a CD (but after a few tries!).
The error I get, after "initializing hardware devices" message is: ‘Unable to read task sequence configuration disk. For more information, please contact your system administrator or helpdesk operator.’

I am making sure I use the USB 2 ports and not the USB 3 ones. I even disabled the USB 3 ones in the bios, just in case, but the result is the same. The smsts.log file, open with Trace32.exe, highlights these three errors:
"Failed to find the current TS configuration path"  (if I F8 during the process, I can't even get an ip address).
"Failed to find the configuration path. The system cannot find the path specified. (Error: 80070003; Source: Windows)    TSBootShell    25/04/2016 10:44:22    864 (0x0360)"
The USB Flash drive is set as removable (diskpart).
The Optiplex network drivers were added to the wim file.
Any ideas as to why this is happening?

I'm not aware it has ever been locked (although that facility is there).. and i certainly don't have any keys for it.

Has anyone out there come across this problem and found a way of getting into these cases. I have opened these types before without trouble..!

I know that Dell motherboards are proprietary and you cannot interchange ATX, mATX, uATX motherboards in dell Bx cases. However can you fit a 745 SFF motherboard in the larger desktop case. The IO panels appear to be the same.
I have a number of both types but the desktops are older GX110's and the GX745 will take a dual core or quad core (Q6600) CPU.
What the SFF case lack is the ability to add an additional hard drive. I can get an SSD and two 3.5" drives in a GX110 case if I dispense with the floppy drive. I don't have room in the proposed locations for towers and the larger case has better cooling and a larger power supply.
Many thanks

I have been looking at the OptiPlex Small Form Factors and I have been debating between two options. I have configured a 5050 SFF and 7050 SFF to the same specs (Intel i7-7700, 1TB 7200 rpm hard drive, 16GB RAM, Radeon R7 450), but I was wondering if there are any other hardware differences, such as fans (fans especially, since the 5050 is a mid-range computer vs the 7050 which is high-range), ports, internal differences (I'm planning to add a SATA SSD), or anything else.

Hi,
I have a new Optiplex 5040 for evaluation for customer rollout that is reporting approx 1G usable RAM less than our current Dell 7010's. Both system run win7 in 32bit mode.
When I use device manager on the 5040, view->'Resources by connection' and select the memory tab, I note the at physical address A4000000 - 7FFFFFFF there is a PCI bus, but the intel HD graphics 530 mapped in this space starts at E0000000.
I'm concerned about the gap between A4000000 and E0000000 compared to what I see on a 7010 or 7020.
Is it expected that HD Graphics card is mapped so far into the A4000000 range on a 32-bit system?
Maybe the gap between A4000000 to E0000000 is expected, if so, Where has the extra 1G gone?
Can I move the HD Graphics 530 closer to A4000000?
Any help or ideas would be much appreciated.
Regards,
Jason.

we have a batch of new 5040's
I have had SEVERAL users complain about flickering/blanking monitors-- the one I am looking at now--both monitors will blank out and return.  it was doing it probably every minute.
unplugging one or other monitor does not fix it.  will still blank existing monitor
no real commonality other than 5040's
bios / drivers are up to date
originally on a dell 19" on DVI (DP-DVI cable)-- blanked/flashed
new monitor--24" dell on DP (DP to DP)-- still does it
I am beginning to think there is a big problem with these display ports on the 5040's
also note that these users have two or three monitors each.
This is becoming a real thorn.

A:OptiPlex 5040 SFF video is flickering/ blanking

I'm seeing this this precise problem with Optiplex 5040 systems with HDMI and 2xDisplayPort connections on board. I'm using Acer monitors, very inexpensive no-frills model V246HQL; not sure that matters.
Symptom: system works OK with a single monitor, via HDMI or DisplayPort to HDMI. System will not cold boot with 2 monitors connected if the monitors are HDMI and powered on. Turning one monitor off lets the system boot OK. Switching to a DisplayPort to VGA adapter works around it; and using an HDMI/DVI adapter plug also works around it.
Notable: this was after BIOS upgrade to 1.5.7, and 1.5.9. This was working on BIOS 1.2.7... I should have left it.
Onboard ePSA diagnostics will hang at "Video Card" test if 2 monitors are connected.
My workaround: use DisplayPort to VGA adapters, and connect 2 monitors via VGA.
A motherboard swap fixed this on one system. I'm about to have the second system repaired too under warranty.
I think this might have something to do with HDMI and DisplayPort display handshaking. I'm betting a future BIOS update might finally resolve it.

My new (to me) OptiPlex 5040 SFF desktop can detect a 6TB 5900rpm SATA HDD but not a 10TB 7200rpm SATA HDD (HGST HUH721010ALE604). It has the latest BIOS, and the 10TB drive's operational wattage is only 6.8W so "power supply isn't powerful enough" shouldn't be the reason. The BIOS doesn't see this drive at all. Is there a chipset limitation? If I can never get the 10TB HDD to work, would an 8TB HDD work? I just want to have as much internal storage as possible. Thanks in advance for your help. BTW, this 10TB drive works fine in a 5-year-old HP 8300 Elite minitower. I refuse to believe that HP desktops are better than Dell's!

We have been replacing workstations at our college with OptiPlex 5040s. We are running Windows 8.1 Enterprise x64. We use SCCM to image and have the latest Deploy OptiPlex 5040 Windows 8.1 Driver Pack loaded so the audio driver is current.

There have been many reports of students not getting audio from their headphones in the labs that have been upgraded to OptiPlex 5040 model. When I would head over to a lab and test a few random PCs (because the reports I was getting didn't include actual station designations), they would all work fine. I would plug in my 3.5mm plug earbuds and would get the audio popup asking what type of device I plugged in. Headphones is the default and so I would click "ok" and a few seconds later, the audio controls in the Windows taskbar would re-enable and sound would work fine through the headphones.
What I discovered was that if a student used USB headphones and then left the lab then another student comes in and plugs in 3.5mm headphones, they will not work unless the run the "troubleshoot sound problems" option from the task tray.
Anyone else experience this issue? Hopefully Dell is aware of this issue. All of our previous OptiPlex models had two audio ports (mic and headphone) and never seemed to have this issue.

Hi All,
Looking at  towers in the current Optiplex range shows the 5040 is supplied with ddr3L 1600mhz ram  -  does anyone know if there's a particular reason for that older standard still being used?
On the outlet site there are 7040 towers (skylake cpus) advertised with ddr4 2400mhz ram  -  but won't those towers only be able to run their ram at 2133mhz?

A:Optiplex 5040 & 7040 - ddr3L & ddr4 (2400mhz)

The 5040 is positioned lower in the price scale, so less expensive DDR3L is used.
The CPU determines the memory speed -- so yes, the RAM will run at 2133 MHz with most CPUs.

I have an OptiPlex 5040 mid-tower.  This is the standard desktop / mid-tower provided by my employer, so I can't just swap it out for a better one - I can upgrade the components, but I can't get a different model.

It will be used for Adobe Premiere video editing.  I have purchased 32GB of RAM and a 1TB M.2 hard drive for it.  All that's left to do is upgrading the factory video card.

What's the fastest nVidia card I can put in it that will work with the power supply in the 5040?

Honestly, I'd rather just replace the power supply with something better (and with the additional power plugs for video cards) and put an nVidea GeForce® GTX 1080 Ti in it, if anyone knows where I can get a replacement power supply that has the extra wattage and power plugs.

A:What is the fastest nVidia card I can put in an OptiPlex 5040 mid-tower?

The answer depends on the card itself.  Don't expect to fit a 1080-level card in that system - these are just about all too large to fit the chassis, even with the power requirements met by a replacement power supply.
Without a PS upgrade, you're looking at a mid-range 1050 card -- these can be had without the additional power connectors that higher-end cards need.  Also remember that most of these require UEFI systems - not legacy BIOS systems -- so you need to make sure you're running in UEFI mode or that you're willing to reload the OS after changing modes.

I am using WDS to deploy my images. I know its a driver issues. I have managed to get the computer to half boot passing the driver error message in MDT but when I apply the network drivers to the WDS WinPE I have I am still unable to get this to boot it errors up about the network connection.
I know the drive that MDT loads is --> PCI/VEN_8086&DEV_15B8&SUBSYS_06BA1028. I know the windows driver is Intel(R) Ethernet Connection (2) I219-V.
I have tried the WinPE boot drivers and direct from Intel. I have download 5 different versions of the this drive and tried x86 and x64 and still not able to get the WinPE to boot.

I have a 5040 mini tower i7-6700. Manual in Specifications/External Connectors section there is a Parallel feature "25-pin connector (optional)".   I was hoping that mean I could plug a cable onto the motherboard  with a 25 pin parallel connector.  Have done that before with other motherboards.  But looking at the mobo, I see only two unused connectors.  One is labelled USB - INT.  The other label is unclear.
Does the motherboard have onboard parallel support?  I would prefer not to install a parallel port card in the PCI slot.

The documentation must be incorrect. I do not see anywhere on the motherboard to plug in a 25 pin parallel port cable. The internal parts page doesn't even mention 25 pin connector?

I am planning to purchase an OptiPlex 5050 Small Form Factor. I am getting it with an optical drive and a SATA SSD, and I'm going to install a SATA HDD. I have been told that the OptiPlex can handle 3 SATA devices, but I am wondering about the connections. The PDF for the owner's manual is broken, so I have been looking at the motherboard diagram for the 7050 SFF (which may be incorrect, and that's partly why I'm asking.)
What type of power connector for the SATA HDD will I need to connect to the motherboard? I know the hard disk (WD Black 1 TB) takes a SATA power connector, but how would I connect that to the motherboard? I saw on the motherboard that there was a port labeled as "HDD and ODD power cable connector" which I assume powers the ODD and the preinstalled storage drive (which I assume is not limited to just a HDD). There is also another port called "ATX power connector"  and I'm unsure to what that does. What do I need to connect to and how?

On a side note, I've noticed in my configuration settings that the media card reader option is set at "No media card reader option selected." I can't change this, but I was wondering if it still came with an SD card reader on the front panel.

Assuming
1) I set the bios to RAID (this is mentioned in the 7040 user's manual)2) I install the latest version of Intel Rapid Storage Technology Driver (Intel RST - this is an available download under support for the 7040)3) I have a second duplicate SATA internal hard drive installedMy sales contact at Dell says only the Precision series now supports RAID, but from my research on the optiplex, the bios setting is there, and the lastest intel RST driver that provides RAID is supported/installed by Dell on these machines.
This feature was available on the lowly (now obsolete) vostro 420 and 430 which I installed on several machines, and it worked beautifully.
Thank you

We recently bought 40 OptiPlex 5050 SFF and about half of them are connected to HP LA2205wg monitors via DP-DP or DP-VDI cables. The monitors are running at 1680x1050 native resolution. We're using Intel's HD 630 on the Kaby Lake chips.
We first noticed the the screen on the monitors will flicker when opening any office application file (running Office 2016). Sometimes the flickering will stay and sometimes it will go away. The screen flickering is bad as in seizure inducing. Disconnecting and reconnecting the DP cable will fix it. Also, switching resolutions will fix it and we can completely prevent it by running in non-native resolutions. We eventually found that disabling graphics hardware acceleration in Office 2016 fix this problem when opening any office files. While this has drop the frequencies of the flickers, it has not eliminated them. I believe this is probably due to graphics hardware acceleration from other applications such as Edge browser or Chrome. We can disable that in Chrome as that can be done in Chrome settings. However, since it seems like Windows 10 no longer can disable hardware acceleration globally (thanks Microsoft), we're at the mercy of any application that utilizes graphics hardware acceleration and no option of disabling it.
It appears there's a bug somewhere with Intel's HD 630 and HP LA2205wg monitors. Remember, my problem here is with 20 or so machines with 20 or so monitors, so it's not a defective computer or monito... Read more

A:OptiPlex 5050 SFF and HP LA2205wg Monitor

Hmm.. If its happening with the HP monitors and not other monitors using the same hardware, that would look to me like it was an HP issue.  Its possible there is a driver issue with the Intel 630 graphics solution.  Have you looked at the OptiPlex 5050 support site to see if they have updated drivers for anything?  I would also check with HP to see if maybe there is a firmware update or driver for the monitor?

Hello,
I'm using a new Optiplex 5050 / Windows 10 machine and on checking for driver updates I'm told the BIOS needs updating.
The BIOS I'm offered is version 1.2.0 last updated 6th February 2017.My already installed BIOS is version 1.3.5 dated 02/03 2017.
So it would appear that Dell are saying I should update to an 'older' version of the BIOS.
I'm always wary of updating BIOS files at the best of times, having had  an unfortunate experience years ago and I don't wish to try anything before I get some confirmation that my BIOS really DOES need updating (or backdating...?).
Can someone also give me some assurance of how reliable this will be when done via the Windows environment as I'm terrified of bricking a new machine !
Thanks for your help.

optijohn,If you have the latest bios, then disregard the update information. The updates do not know that you have installed the latest bios. They just suggest for your computer in case you haven't updated drivers.

Hi all,
I am trying to evaluate a new Dell OptiPlex 5050 for our needs.  Because of some custom hardware that the PC controls the OS needs to be a 32-bit operating system, but Dell only ships 64-bit operating systems.  I got around this with the 5040 by using an image from a 7020 then installing necessary 32-bit 5040 drivers.
I tried the same on the 5050, only the BIOS refuses to boot the image - I have legacy ROMs turned on, but it doesn't recognize it as a bootable device.  Does anyone have any suggestions on how I can get a 32-bit operating system (Windows 7 is preferred, Windows 10 is fine) to run on an OptiPlex 5050?

A:Windows 10 32-bit Profession on OptiPlex 5050?

Windows 7 will only work if your 5050 has a Skylake (6th generation) CPU -- if it has a 7th generation CPU, ONLY Windows 10 is supported.  Microsoft and Intel (and by extension, Dell) are not supporting anything older than Windows 10 on the Kaby Lake 7th generation CPUs;  even if you somehow get WIndows 7 to install, bear in mind MIcrosoft is disabling Windows updates for pre-Windows 10 on these CPUs very shortly.
Windows 10 32-bit should work just fine, subject to it being limited to 4G total memory no matter how much is installed.  You will likely need to do a ground-up install of Windows 10 32-bit on the system to get it to work, however -- due to the fundmental change of chipset and CPU vs. the older systems.

getting this on the 5050 (only so far)
we open up one of our business software programs and IE immediately crashes
this seems to do with an update, but not sure which one
if we re-image the PC, the program works fine.  its not till after our system pushes all the updates does it then crash at program opening

just throwing this out there to see if anyone else may have this
oce department thinks it may be related to adobe flash or something.  same dept found that is they open two tabs at IE startup, it crashes...so they changed it to one tab and it works
possibly this program is "opening two tabs" ...dunno

A:optiplex 5050 crashes on IE opening

This is not a Dell support Question.
"business software programs" depend on Java and Flash and Dotnet 2.0 3.5 etc.
So the "business software program makers need to support this."

So far, we have had four, reproducible issues (blacking out/flickering of monitor) with varying models of iPhones being plugged into the front USB 3.0 ports on OptiPlex 5040 small form factor PCs. iPhone 7, 6+, and 5S. Swapping cables does not affect result and upgrading BIOS to latest version also does not correct the issue.
There was also a user who had her screen blacking out with just her iPhone cable plugged in. This is the thunderbolt to USB cable. They use this cable to charge their phone and also to use their headphones with their Windows 10 PC. This cable is plugged into the USB 2 quick charge port.
These PCs are part of our Windows 10 deployment. I am unsure and have not yet tested this behavior on an OptiPlex 5040 running Windows 8.1 (the OS we currently have deployed).

Hi,
Trying to get to grips with the many errors I seem to be getting on my Optiplex 5050/Windows 10 combination… It seems that some of them are being reported by others on the net so obviously its a case of waiting and hoping MS will sort them out.

My agency is currently working on preparations to rollout Windows 10 on the OptiPlex 5050s and Latitude 5480 equipment with Windows 10. I'm currently unable to find any documentation on Imaging Recommendations for this equipment. Nothing that says whether they need to be configured in Legacy or UEFI modes, nothing. I'm trying to see if anyone else is having issues with getting their equipment imaged properly with Windows 10 Pro x64 version 1703. I'm using MDT 2013 Update 2 and I'm running into issues with the AutoLogin not working, for starters, and once I log in manually, the task sequence is not resuming properly. I've noticed that in order to make this work, I've had to go in and manually turn off the firewall and disable defender, then reboot the system. Once I've logged back in manually, the task sequence will resume. Any ideas?

When I installed a new 2.5 SATA disk in my Optiplex 5040 SFF, the front USB 2 connector with PowerShare stopped working.
When I uninstalled the disk, the front USB 2 connector with PowerShared started to work again.
Because the power supply just have one sata power-cord I used a splitter to supply the two disks with power.
According to the specifications it should be possible to use to hard disks in the Optiplex 5040 SFF.  I have just not been able to figure out how :-)
I have not been able to find a reason for this, can someplease help me :-)
