Can't delete or trash file.

Q: Can't delete or trash file.

I have a file that I was downloading when the power went out. I now have an icon in my download folder that can't be deleted. Whenever I try to delete the file I get a message indicating that the file is in use by some application and that I should quit any programs that may be using it. I checked and there is nothing running in the background, and I've even restarted several times but am still unable to delete the file.
Just to be safe I had Nortons run a scan on the file and even tried the "Secure Wipe" feature in Norton System Works but still no go.

Anyone have any suggestions as to how I can trash this little MoFo?

Thanks in advance.

Preferred Solution: Can't delete or trash file.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Here's a question that has been posted probably thousands of times. Can item, files, pictures be deleted out of the recycle bin with no fear of loosing what you don't want to loose? I have hundreds of photos in my trash that I do not remember ever placing there. Vacation pictures that I don't recall deleting. This is why I have never emptied the recycle bin. Consequently there are over a thousand files there. I can see the files I intentionally put there but there are hundred more that I don't recall putting there.

Question: can I empty the recycle bin without any fear that I will delete an original image?

Brian

A:Recycle Bin, Trash Bin, etc. fear to delete

Emptying the Recycle Bin will delete all the items that are in it, but it will not delete files or photos that are located elsewhere on the computer.

If you have any photos in the Recycle Bin that you wish to keep you need to restore that item to it's original place. Once you have emptied the Recycle Bin all items will be deleted.

Hello,

System: Windows 10 Home, Version 1703, OS Build 15063.674, Outlook 2016 (all MS s/w fully updated).
Hardware: I7 chip-based laptop with 16 GB RAM

Issue:
I deleted two folders for which I had no further need. They went into the "Trash" folder in Outlook 2016. When I try to delete them permanently, however, I find that I cannot as they are recreated in seconds in the Trash folder.

Question:
How may I delete these folders permanently?

Thanks in advance for your help.

You need to give more information. Are you using a web-based e-mail service? If so, which one is it? If not, which application are you using? Outlook, for example?

Thunderbird 45 on Windows 10 displays trash cans 3 times:
One as a sub"folder" of the Inbox
one as a sub"folder" of Local folders
one as its own folder.

when an email gets deleted from, for example, the Inbox, it goes into the trash bin in that folder. when I empyty that trash, it goes into the main trash folder and when I empty that trash it may go into the local folders' trash which then also has to be emptied. It's an irrirating problem.

I cannot find an option to delete the extra trash bins either by right clicking or in the menus. when looking at the properties on the trash to determine its disk location, the pathname is a url-like address beginning with imap://

Any ideas as to how I can reduce the numer of trash bins to 1?

Thanks for your help.

Hello,

Is there a good free program to recover a deleted trash bin file?
I would feel a lot better deleting files if I could recover one in the future when I get a pop up saying it's missing.

A:Recovering A Deleted Trash Bin File

There are a couple of freebies: Network Recycle Bin Tool and one other [forgot the name]. I tried both, and I really wasn't comfortable with them after awhile, maybe just me being picky. Now, I have Resplendence's Undeluxe [pay for version], after I added some exclusions, the Undeluxe Explorer makes much more sense to me. It's possible that the freebie Network Recycle Bin Tool can be very useful, just might contain an exclusion box, if it does: you will have a great undelete tool, focused on files you can actually feel free to undelete.

do you know if he's doing this through the cache folder, or through the cache destination !!dir??

what i mean is that, if your using netscape, you can tell it where to store the files being viewed!
under the preferences!!
if it's IE, enable the password, unless he's gutsy enough to get rid of the ratings.pol file he's locked out of bad site(well most of them)
And if he does get rid of the file, then you've got him...you'll have to redo all the settings, not to mention take the belt out..heh heh
well, for netscape you can tel it to store the cache int a folder on c:\
but when your making it, rename it to this!
hold ALT, and renme to 255, this will hide it from anyone who doesn't know what it is!

I think the above is done right, if not post back an i or someone else will do it the right way..i'm just kinda in a rush!!

change the destination dir to the newfolder on C:\ ....hope it works!

I am trying to delete a large file that was used by PC Tools AntiVirus. I have uninstalled the PC Tools software, but a file remained. I have tried to delete it, but nothing I've tried has worked. The file is

c:\documents and settings\all users\application data\PC Tools\Temp

For some reason, the file is very, very large, and I don't understand what is going on with it. When I try to delete it, some members actually add space believe it or not (I have watched this happen). One went from a few K to 11 mb when I tried to delete it! Is there a "hard command" to delete this thing? I have "fired all my bullets". I am running AVG antivirus now to determine if a virus is involved. AVG runs for over 2 hours because of the size of this file. I need a "strong" command to get rid of this thing. Help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

OK, here's the situation...I had a folder which normally has some subfolders beneath it, say the structure is something like \..\uploaded\errors (the "\..\" is another folder or two). The folder structure was created by an app I use at work (It's only, maybe, 4 folders deep in total). By whatever demon, the folder structure now says something like:"\..\uploaded\errors\uploaded\errors\uploaded\errors\uploaded\errors\uploaded\errors\.............\"792 folders deep.I have no idea how this occurred since there's little to no activity in these folders at any given time. For the moment I don't care why but nevertheless, I can't delete the folders at all (because they far exceed the 255 character Windows limit). In factthe folder structure goes so deep, that I can't even tell whether the structure ends at a file OR a folder since I can't "see" down that far. More criteria (note this is in NTFS and I have ownership and full rights of the entire structure):-I do NOT get a "file is locked by another program" error-I can't delete it from a command prompt-I can't delete it in 8.3 mode-I can't delete it in Safe Mode-I can't delete it in Safe Mode with a command prompt-I did run a virus scan in safe Mode on the folders but it comes up clean (assuming the scan saw that far down but it seemed to terminate properly)-if I... Hi Saussure

Yes, you can fix that line. It does not appear to be a bad entry.

With all windows closed, rescan with HijackThis, place a check in that line and click Fix

It does appear to be a file from hp.com, should you ever need the file again while visiting hp.com, you will be given the option to download it to your computer again.

During a TrendMicro virus scan, it found an archive that was infected. A quick check of the archive (Which I'd grabbed months before, but never ran) showed it was actually an application, so I went to shift+del the file (No sense dumping a virus into the recycle bin), and poof it's gone.

Then I went to delete the folder it was in, but... it wouldn't let me. Told me I didn't have the permissions to do so. A quick check of the folder's contents revealed the virus/app was back, as if it had never been deleted.

If I try doing a regular delete, it tells me Destination Folder Access Denied.

So I started poking around the file's security properties.
"Unable to display current owner."

I tried changing the owner, but it wouldn't let me do that.
I downloaded Unlocker, right-clicked on the file and unlocked it, but nothing seemed to happen, and same results when I try to delete it.

I'm running Vista 32-bit, not connected to a local network (Just one computer), and I'd really like to delete this virus/app off my machine. TrendMicro was unable to get rid of it, and I can't seem to get rid of it either.

A:Solved: Cannot delete file / No Permissions - Unable to display current owner of file

Ha, nevermind. Unlocker just took an enormous amount of time in actually starting up, and turns out the virus scanner had a process linked to the file. So, problem solved. Nothing to see here.

I am wondering if anyone can provide the equivalent to this linux script. When run against a text file with one entry per line being the name of a directory, it deletes the named directories.

On linux, I run this against the text list.
#!/bin/bash
while IFS='' read -r line || [[ -n "$line" ]]; do
rm -R $line
done < "$1"

I am not sure how to make it do the same for Windows. I can do this, but I'm hoping there's a way to delete based on what's in the text file. Also, wouldn't want it to prompt for deletion of each, but to just delete.

@echo on
cd \
cd %USERPROFILE%
dir /D /N 0
pause
for /D %%f in (XX*) do rmdir %%f /s
pause
%comspec% /k
pause

Thank you

Basically the title. Almost every single time i move ANY file or delete any file, the window im in freezes and the progress bar freezes. Now when i create a new folder the window im in freezes also, but i'd say its only 50% of the time. The temporary solution i found was to go to the task bar, end explorer, and restart it using run. Now when i check back on that folder, whatever action I did (ie delete file) does do what i wanted, its just the freezing. I'm looking for a permanent solution to this and any insight would be greatly appreciated.

Hi erod49, try looking in your error logs. You have given a good discription of the problem. Tel us your system specs as well.

To get into your error logs,

Left Click on Start Menu.
Right click on Computer and choose manage.
Click on the event viewer.
You now have loads of options to try and pin down what is happening.
Expand the error tab.
Look for things in the last 24 hours.

Other things to look for are updates, has an update caused this. Has your computer autoupdated any of the motherboard drivers.
Have you tried to restore the computer before the error started or has it always been like that.

Problem: A while ago I emptied the recycle bin. After emptying, a folder remained that had 4-5 files in it. I don't recall exactly what the files were.

I tried to delete the folder, and got the message in the title.

No problem I thought, and I got out a handy file shredder and shredded that file to pieces. It was gone.

Except it's not. When I use CCleaner or other aps to clean my system, the "cannot delete file:..." message in the title pops up.

If I go to the recycle bin and empty it, I get the message. When I look in the recycle bin, it is empty, but if I tell it to empty itself I get the message.

So the folder is in the recycle bin, invisible. It was "shredded", but still remains.

I have entered safe mode, but is still get the message when I try to empty the recycle bin or use CCleaner.

I have read things that reference deleting the entire recycle bin (which then recreates itself), but am not clear on this or if it is a good idea.

My system runs fine, it's just an annoyance.

Any ideas from the experts here (you solved a big virus issue I had a while ago, and this is nothing in comparision, but hopefully somebody has seen this issue before...)

Thanks,

I have over 37000 files of duplicate songs I would love to rid my pc of. I did a search using *(2) and all the files show up but i get the 'cannot delete file:cannot read from the source file or disk' error.
I searched duplicate music files this way once before and it eliminated a ton of dupes in seconds but now it wont work.
I have a dual boot system. XP and 7 and since I couldn't get the search to work like xp in win7( every file with a 2 in it in any configuration or location in the file name, dupe or not, was listed) , I copy and pasted the entire music folder(317gbs) to the xp o/s hd and tried the search there and am where I am now. My search page with all the files listed with a (2) and ready to delete...
I haven't tried a safe mode attempt because I have read from many who've tried it didn't work.

It's driving me crazy seeing all those duplicate files just sitting there and I can't delete them!
Please help

Can someone point me in the right direction. I've been searching and attempting to fix this for a couple of days without luck.

My Problem
I have a file that I can not delete. When I try, I get the message "cannot delete file: cannot read from the source file or disk"
The file extension ends with a space and is reported a 0 KB in size.

Here is what I've attempted:
1. Normal delete and well as "Shift+Delete". I get the above message.
2. Tried to scan the file for a virus. Got the error message "Scan was completed with error. Error:The system cannot find the file specified."
3. Virus scanned the folder. Scan completed - no virus found.
4. Attempted to open the file in Notepad by opening Notepad then dragging the file. Got the error message "The system cannot find the file specified."
5. Attempted to create the same file name in the same location using Notepad. i.e. Hoping to replace the file. I got the usual message that the file already exists and I granted permission to replace it. However, I still cannot delete the replaced file.
6. Booted in Safe Mode and attempted to delete. Same result.
7. Ran "CHKDSK" No problems - still cannot delete.

Check the start => all programs => startup folder for related shortcuts, move them to another location and see if it helps.

Go to start => run and type msconfig. Check the items you'll find in the startup tab against bleepingcomputer's database. If you make changes there (and each time you'll make changes there) you'll get a warning about being in selective mode when windows restart. Tick the box and click ok so that it stays in that mode and doesn't bother you again. Make sure you don't untick your antivirus or firewall.

We're not big fans of registry cleaners at TSF. See post #2 here. you don't always know what they do, there's no way they know everything about all entries your programs need and they can do worse than good. Cleaning minor problems in the registry won't speed up your compter noticeably anyway.

Hi.

Whenever I try to delete my temporary internet files in bulks or by selecting all then deleting, it gives that "cannot delete file bla bla bla" message. HOWEVER, I'm able to delete them if I delete them one by one (ANNOYING!). I could also delete all the files the other way: choosing "delete files", but that's irrelevant.

I use IE 8, Windows XP SP 3 Media Center Edition.

A:Cannot Delete file: Cannot read from source file or Disk

First off why are you attempting to delete temporary Internet files manually? Internet Explorer has built in tools to make this easy. Windows XP has disk cleanup which also makes removing Temporary files easy.Should those two methods not suit you, I'd recommend this free utility http://www.ccleaner.com/Simply pick what you want, and it will do the rest. The reason you receive "Cannot delete file" is the index.dat file is always in "use" by Internet Explorer and can only be deleted on reboot.

I downloaded a file, didn't download correctly, size = 0 bytes.

Reports owner unknown. I can't change ownership, remove file properties, any of that stuff. Can't rename or delete. I'm logged in as administrator but it keeps asking for administrator permission.

??

Another question about file ownerships - I tried to do a backup once, during an OS re-install, many files came back garbled, with file names switched around, many picture files had a file size but would not open, even if I changed the extensions, etc.

It seems easier to just copy files to an external, then copy back, than doing the windows backup. Is this what other's have found?

Yo. This is my first post lets see what happens...

Here's the deal.

My buddy accessed a shared folder on my PC and uploaded some production tools to it. He uses a MAC.

So now I have this file called "._spooky tambo shake "

The problem is, if I try delete, rename, move, or do anything for that matter to the file I get an error message "Error deleting file or folder: Cannot delete file: Cannot read from the source file or disk."

I've tried using command prompt to delete the file but it doesn't even show up if I type "Dir"

Properties for the file are zero everything.

I've tried a program called KillBox but even that can't do it.

Help?

A:Cannot Delete File: Cannot Read From The Source File Or Disk.

But before you delete that we need to know about the file firstIm not sure if its malware or a system file So now I have this file called "._spooky tambo shake " Just want some more info on that file (for a close up) what does the icon look like?On what folder is it located?(And if possible, give us a screen shot of it)Also where did you get this file in the first place? What type of file is it (If you go back to properties)It really sounds to me more likely renamedAlso searched it in the internet,I can't find any info about it

I am going nuts here. I downloaded a file for work purposes last night & have been having problems ever since. I downloaded a .mov video off of a site. I wasn't able to download it directly, so I used RealPlayer recorder and saved it to my desktop. The file is 164 MB. I haven't been able to open the video with any program (they freeze up when I try). I downloaded the video because I wanted to convert it to an .MP3 so I could transcribe it easier, I was unsuccessful with that.I can't delete the file. It goes through the motions, saying it is sending to the recycling bin, but it never completes it. I tried going into command prompt and deleting it that way. It shows up in the directory, but when I type the request to delete it, it says the file is not found! I also tried deleting it from the desktop in safe mode. That didn't work either.I have scanned with McAfee, MalwareBytes, and SuperAntiSpyware. Those haven't picked up anything. I used ATF Cleaner. I did a System Restore, hoping that would solve my problem. That just seemed to make things worse, because now McAfee is disabled for computer & files, it won't fix the protection items because it says some components are missing (this might possibly resolve itself with a reboot, as I have had it do that before). [ --> The McAfee problem has resolved, it needed to download an update and reboot.]I just need to get rid of this damn file, but anything I try to do with it ends up freezing up. I can't ... Alright, so what I'm trying to do is list all the shortcuts & folders in the start menu and list all the shortcuts & folders on the desktop and put this into a text file. The reason is to get a full list of programs our teachers use before we re-image their machine and not all of their programs are listed in add/remove programs and not all programs make a folder in Program Files, that is why I'm trying to do it in this roundabout way. What I have so far is this:

@echo off
mkdir "p:\Program List"
DIR "c:\documents and settings\all users\start menu\*" /S/B/OD > "p:\Program List\%computername% Start Menu.txt"
DIR "c:\documents and settings\all users\desktop\*" /S/B/OD > "p:\Program List\%computername% Desktop.txt"

This works perfectly but the only problem is the file has these:
c:\documents and settings\all users\start menu\
c:\documents and settings\all users\desktop\

before each entry in the text file. Is there an easy way to remove these lines so the text files are easier to read? I've checked other sources and can't figure out how to get this to work...

A:[SOLVED] Delete text from .txt file in a batch file

I?ve got a file that seems to exist, but I can?t delete. I created it as a.txt with a long-ish file name (76 chars) as a reminder, but it now has no extension & is zero bytes. When I try & delete it I get the msg: ?Cannot delete ?. Cannot find the specified file?. I can?t open it and the properties doesn?t give me much info.

It?s on a drive (h:) that?s sync?d to a network and only appears when I?m not connected to the network. This makes it difficult to use things like ccleaner, deletefxpfiles, chkdsk etc.

I?ve tried deleting it from a command line (tells me it doesn't exist) in safe cmd mode (couldn't log on) deleting the folder and a bunch of other things ? but no joy.

Any ideas?

Hello All -

I've been around here a couple of time in the last couple of years with my Vista machine and you all always seem to have the answers for me. So here I go again.

Now I'm sure there is a simple fix for this, but I can't seem to find it. ....

I happen to have two files now that I can NOT delete. I keep getting the message;

Could not find this item

This is no longer lacated in C:\Users\RoyBoy\Favorites.
Verify the item's location and try again.
Now, you know I'm looking right at the file (both in Window Explore - the shortcut, and in it's file location) and the item is there. What's the deal! I'll tell you that these are both Favorite Folders file types and they both have files that I'm trying to delete. You see, I tuned up all me favorites & reorganized things alittle and I did this with Chrome. BTW Then, wanting to sync those newly organized favorites to my Favorite Folder, I created a folder caller "Bookmarks Old" and moved all the old favorites into that folder. I opened IE8 and imported the the exported file from chrome and thus repopulated my Favorite folder. Now wanting to delete that "Bookmarks Old" and it will not let me.

Come on - there has got to be a simple fix for this. Please don't even go to the 'complete re-install' line

Thanks All!
(was just one -been around for a week or so, then just today another one is acting the same way)

Welcome to the forum,

Try dragging to the recycle bin

Then try the following.

Go to the file, try to right click. If you have the option of going to a previous version, click on it. Then it may be restored to a location where you can delete it.

Hey all!

I have a .png file on my secondary hard drive, which I cannot seem to delete. When I try to delete or rename it, it tells me: "The selected file name is invalid or too long".

I came across the programs Delinvfile and Unlocker, but they did not seem to work for me.

Appreciate any help!

A:Can't delete file due to invalid file name

Try this: Open an Elevated Command Prompt. Change to the directory (folder) the file is in. You do this using the cd command.
For instance, if the file is in your Pictures folder, you would enter:

cd C:\Users\xxxxxxxx\Pictures (xxxxxxxx is your account name)

Once in the right directory (folder), use the del command as follows to see if you can delete it. If, for instance, the file starts with asdfg0000....... etc,

del asdfg000*

That will delete any file that begins with the letters adsfg000, so be careful. Make sure you use enough of the beginning letters so the del command will only delete that file.

I've got a pretty annoying issue with a file on my desktop:

mech2v11.exe

I can't move or delete it. When I try it gives me the error "Cannot delete mech2v11: It is being used by another person or program." I've tried booting up in safe mode, but get the exact same error. This is a file I downloaded to update one of my old games (mechwarrior 2, classic), so I know the origin. Any idea how to get this off the desktop?

Thanks
