Preferred Solution: Adding external monitor to the computer

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

A:Adding External monitor

There is an HDMI output port at the rear of your PC. You will need a display with an HDMI input port and an HDMI cable. See the following image for the location of the port.

I plugged a HP monitor,(mfg date 2003, supported Win 2000, XP) into the VGA connector of my laptop computer but my computer does not seem to recognize that there is a monitor connected because the monitor screen shows message "check video cable". The cable is a VGA to VGA and is brand new. The monitor power cable is supplying power to the monitor. My laptop uses Win 7, I tried all 4 options in the display setting and none of them send an image to the monitor( duplicate, extend, projector). Besides no video image being sent to the monitor, when I tried the extend choice in the display settings, still no image being sent to the ext monitor and also my laptop screen goes completely dark and I have to unplug the ext monitor in order to get my desktop screen back on the laptop.
The monitor seems ok. It should be able to work with my laptop, right? If anyone can help with this I'd appreciate it.

A:Adding external monitor to laptop

See if Control Panel -> Windows Mobility Center -> Display tells you anything useful.

Try restarting the machine with the external monitor attached.

You might not get anything on either display, but give it a shot.
There's a key sequence to switch monitors, but I can never recall it.

I have a Dell XPS 13 9360. I connect it to an external monitor (HP LE1901w) through a Dell DA100 adapter. I use Ubuntu 16.04 LTS and as a driver for the adapter I use the latest given by DisplayLink.
If I want to use both monitors (the built-in display and the external one at the same time, the latter with VGA connection) I get problems with the size of the windows.
Just for information, for the built-in monitor I use a rescaling of 2, and I really need to do that otherwise it would be impossible for me to read it.
I figured out that, going into System settings-Monitor, one has necessarily to choose one option for  "rescale the contents of the window to match:" and then one has to choose between the monitor with smallest or biggest controls. Both choices are bad for me, because either the external monitor gets windows too big or the built-in montior gets windows too small.
How to fix that?

I just purchased a WD My Passport external hard drive. I already have 2 of them that work fine with my system. When I first plugged the new one in windows recognized it and tried to install. First 2 of the first 3 parameters went fine but I got an error message on the 3rd that read "WD SES Device USB Device - No Driver Found" but windows did recognize the drive. The SES (SCSI Enclosure Services) driver is a driver for some of the new optional features that I don't need.

But since that exact instant I now have several problems.

#1 - my keyboard now will not work through the normal keyboard port. Tried two different ones, no go. Luckily I had a usb keyboard that will work.

#2 - when I try to do windows update it hangs up after selecting install updates. It hangs at "downloading updates - 0kb total 0% complete".
Windows defender also hangs during update search.
There are a couple of other issues like a browser crashing, and such.
Device Manager is now giving me a yellow error icon for all 3 WD drives now as well. But they all work/are recognized.

Can someone please help?
thanks in advance.

A:Adding External Hard Drive (WD) messed up computer

Tell us what happens when the the computer is powered down, the 3rd WD taken offline, in fact, all 3 WDs taken offline; then a powerup/boot/startup in Safe Mode; if desktop comes to "parade rest," restart into regular boot/startup. If desktop successfully comes to "parade rest," add only one of the two formerly working WDs & restart. If all is well, then add the 2nd formerly working WD, restart. If all is well, I recommend returning the 3rd WD and getting a replacement.

What i want to do is re install the OS so i can start fresh, but can it be done with an external monitor and a usb drive?

Main questions :
Where can i download Win XP or Vista or 7 to get it on a USB drive?
Can I do it with an external monitor?
Thank you, any other suggestions such as how to fix the properties error (Rundll32) would be appreciated, thanks.

A:Formatting my computer with an External Monitor

As long as the computer is capable of booting from USB - you can install Windows from a USB flash drive. You would need a genuine copy of Windows.

There is a simple program out there that can help you with this..
WinToFlash - Install Windows from usb - Home page

You should be able to hook up an external monitor - the laptop probably has a VGA output.

My computer is a Toshiba Satellite A205-S5000 Laptop and when i try to connect it to my tv the only resolutions that show up that the tv can support are 1024x768 and 800x640. The TV manual states that using the VGA connection, the supported resolutions are 640x480, 720x400, 800x600, 1024x768, 1280x720, 1280x768, and 1360x768 but none of the resolutions above 1024x768 show up as a resolution i can change it to. The computer's display is of 16:10 format, could this be why 16:9 resolutions don't show up as an option and is there any way that i can force the graphics card to display 1280x720?

Hello,
I just bought an HP Envy 23" All-In-One desktop a few months ago and am just now attempting to pair it with an external monitor (TV) via the HDMI port. The computer doesn't even detect that it's been hooked up to anything and the TV still says "no signal". I tried the same HDMI cable and TV with my laptop and it works fine, so it must be the computer. Any suggestions? Is it a driver problem? I don't know much tech-wise, but am willing to try if anyone has any ideas on how I can fix this.

The operating system is Windows 8.1 and the monitor is an AOC Envision 22" TV, model number L22H998. I visited the AOC website in search of a driver and didn't see the model listed. Is there perhaps an equivalent I could use? I don't know much about drivers.

Thanks and let me know if any more info is required for an accurate diagnosis.

Hi Dejalive, welcome to the Eight Forums.

Couple of questions:
Is the TV signal input set to correct HDMI port (for instance if the cable is in HDMI2 in TV, the TV signal input must be set to HDMI2)?Does the Windows Screen Resolution Tool show the TV when HDMI cable is connected both to PC and TV?If Screen Resolution does not show the TV by default, does clicking the Detect button help?

A:Adding a 22" Dell External Monitor to 15" Dell M70 Laptop

Get a 22" Dell monitor and connect it to the vga port on your laptop. There is an Fn + (some other key) that will enable the external monitor. You can press the Fn+(some other key) combination so that either the laptop display is used, the external display is used or have it set so both are used for the display. Typically the combination is the Fn key plus one of the F keys at the top of you keyboard.

Old computer is HP ProBook attached separately to a ViewSonic LED 1080p 22" monitor.  I use Extended Desktop mode with Built-In Monitor + Monitor.  Works great with Built-In Monitor at 1366x768 resolution and external monitor at 1920x1080

at 2560x1440 on the built-in monitor, and while the external monitor says 1920x1080, it looks magnified by 10 times or 20 times bigger.  Any ideas how to get the external monitor to be normal sized?  I like using the external for large spreadsheets.

Hey all. I got a new laptop and it uses windows 10. My goodness things on windows 10 is a lot different than 7 and not in a good way.

First off, i tried to connect external Monitor to it. It connects without an issue. With my windows 7 laptop, i use my 24' external monitor as my main display and the laptop screen as the other one. Most of the time, everything is on the main display with nothing on the other screen.

My issue is I can do this... except if i want to drag something to the laptop screen... the laptop is on the left side of the desk, the monitor is on the right, i have to drag it to the right which is the complete opposite of what i want. I could fix this on windows 7 easily which i recall switching the 1 and 2 box. Im having tons of issues with this on this new laptop with windows 10. I did a lot of trial and error and can't fix this. I know its extend display and trial and error doesn't work. The other thing is if you look at the laptop screen, why are there icons and everything else in the taskbar? There should be none of that on the 2nd monitor. So why is it there?

The other thing is there is absolute no sound on my external monitor which is my primary monitor. I could fix this on windows 7 very easily. I have no idea how to with this.

Also when i click on a picture, with windows 7, you could just use the scroll mouse on the mouse to get a larger image of the picture. On windows 10, all that does is go to the next picture etc.... Read more

Hey Everyone! Trying to get an idea of what order to start throwing parts at this thing. Like the title says, my screen on the Yoga 2 Pro is blank. The computer boots and runs fine on an external monitor. I haven't pulled the bezel off the screen yet, but the video cable looks good on the mobo end. I am guessing I probably need to buy a new screen, but was wondering if I could have a cable issue before I spend $150 on a screen.  Couple of interesting things:In the device manager, only the external display is in the "Monitor" list. I don't have an option to mirror displays in the graphics properties or anything. My compupter just things there's one monitor, the external one.  I was having flickering issues leading up to the screen going out. Flickering only occured on battery.  Any thoughts?

I have an HP laptop and I have been running it with dual monitors. I finally decided to upgrade to Windows 7 and after I installed it I noticed that the built in monitor of my laptop looked strange and when I opened the display settings to change the screen resolution and set the external monitor as a separate monitor rather than a mirror I noticed that only one monitor was detected and it was the external one (Generic non-pnp monitor on standard VGA graphics adapter) and the built in monitor does NOT show up at all.

I've tried the detection button, in hopes that the computer would read the built in monitor and I could fix the problem. This did not help. I tried unplugging/replugging the external monitor to no avail. I tried restarting without the external monitor plugged in and it STILL reads the built in monitor as if it is the external one. Is there anyway to fix this? I have not tried re-installing the OS, not yet anyways.

Any suggestions ?

Recently my Yoga has begun to not work very well with external monitors and USB-C docks. Specifically, if I am plugged into a dock with working external monitors, then remove the USB-C plug then plug it back in again, the external monitors will no longer display. This can often be fixed by shutting the laptop lid and opening it again. Sometimes this is just fixed randomly by waiting. Sometimes a reboot will fix it. Suspecting that it is an issue with the drivers, I have gone to the downloads page and downloaded "Intel Graphics Driver (Version 1709 or later)". When I attempt to install these drivers however I get the error message "This computer does not meet the minimum requirements to install this software". I get this when I try to install manually OR when I try to use the Thinkvantage software to update my computer. Not sure why my computer would not meet the minimum requirements if this is the download specifically for my computer. How can I still this software or fix my external monitor issue? Thanks!

I am using a 22" screen for my primary screen and the laptop lid open for a secondary screen. The main screens resolution is 1680x1050, I can set it to anything I want and it's always using the full screen. The laptop screen on the other hand will only use the full screen if it's at 1400x1050 resolution (max for that screen, IBM Thinkpad T43). With the large 22" screen I have no trouble reading the screen at high resolutions, the screen is huge, with the little 14" screen though I have to strain to read the screen at 1400x1050.

The problem is when I set the laptop screen to anything lower than 1400x1050, it uses less of the screen. Preferrably I want it at 1280x1024 or 1024x768 (I dont know which I want yet as I can't see the freaking screen at that resolution). At 1280x1024 for instance the useable screen is just a box in the middle, so the "1280x1024" is still barely readable for me cause it's shrunk from full screen, plus it's just annoying only using a portion of the screen.

I have played with the ATI Control Center, the Thinkpad display settings and windows display settings and just cannot get this thing to go full screen at lower resolutions when docked and using the external monitor.

Anyway to resolve this?

Sorry if this is dumb question but I don't really understand the best way to add external speakers to my desktop setup. At the moment I use a monitor with in built speakers. It all goes from my 980ti hdmi output into the monitor. So I wonder where would I add external speakers. I believe the sound card is in built on the motherboard but if hdmi is supplying the sound then I presume the gpu is taking care of it (or does that sound silly).

i am just pondering to add a couple of slightly better speakers as the monitor in built ones are a bit tinny at higher volumes. Am not bothered or into any sub woofer stuff. Just two half decent speakers will do fine. So do I plug them into the headphone socket / aux out on the monitor? Or should they connect to the back of the PC somewhere or even the headphone socket of the PC itself? I see sockets labelled rear, c/sub, line in, line out, mic on the back. Obviously I know to avoid mic and in any case I think my case has mic and headphone jacks. Just pretty confused. If they were plugged into the back of the PC then would the sound output clash with what is being fed through the hdmi. Maybe the speakers would give out sound as well as the monitors in built speakers all at the same time? Just pretty confused. If it helps my gpu is nvidia 980ti and the motherboard is ASUS Z170 pro gaming.

A:Adding external speakers

Depending on the built in sound device on the MB. Some support 2.1/5.1/7.1 and also optical audio out. Just plug in the cable that comes with the speaker to it then switch the sound output for the speaker.
Sound input to speakersSome high end speakers support digital sound then you would use an optical cable.Sound input to TV using HDMI cable

However, once that is done, I want to connect my old HDD (which was Windows 7 Pro) and get the images and stuff off of it, so I can format it and use strictly for sotrage.

Is it going to cause a conflict? Is this even possible? I don't want to keep the OS on the old HDD. I plan on using that on a different computer.

A:Adding a HDD that already has Win7 on it as an external HDD?

I don't see it causing any harm since it automatically gets assigned a different drive letter so that no system path points to it anymore. You just copy over what you need, format it the way you want it and go about your business

Izzy6, welcome to the forum. When requesting help you should always include the make/model (i.e. p6-xxxx) of the computer and/or monitor.  This information is necessary for us to review the specifications of them.  Also, what is the make/model of the speakers? Before you reply, you should check in Control Panel / Sound to assure that your speakers are the Default.  This is a problem with Win 10.  Also, run HP and Windows Updates to assure that the software and drivers are up to date.

Fixed; was a driver issue. Problem seems exclusive to a Dell u2415 on DP port 1 only of the dock or to the laptop's DP port (at least for the couple monitors I tried). It's possible it could affect other monitors. My starting point: 9.18.13.4535 / 9.17.10.2843 (Nvidia /  Intel) The latest driver from Lenovo is 9.18.13.4535 / 8.15.10.2725. I'm not sure how i have a slightly newer Intel, but that's what it was. I couldn't install the Lenovo driver. I also couldn't install a newer driver from Intel (10.18.10.4276). In both cases Windows or the Intel installer stopped me saying the mfr provided the drivers and that the installed version was up to date. I worked around by first rolling back the Intel driver. The manual (.zip) install of the latest intel driver worked. This immediately fixed the Dell u2415 on DP port 1 and laptop's built-in DP port.

My issue at the moment is everything is way too big on the laptop screen. I want to have 1920x1080 resolution but its way too big. I googled what is my resolution on it and it shows 1536 x 864. Can someone tell me how to change this to 1920x1080? I googled what is my resolution on the external monitor and it does show 1920x1200 which is correct.

My external monitor which is my main monitor is fine at the moment with the 1920x1200. Its windows 10 but im assuming this should be very similar to windows 7 to fix this issue?

I recently bought an Averatec laptop and wanted to plug my DVD burner into it through USB. I installed all the software and when I plugged in the drive, Windows says "New CD-ROM Drive Found" then instantly restarts. I'm using the drive right now on my desktop so it can't be the drive malfunctioning. This same thing happens when I try to plug a DVD camera into my laptop. Any other USB device works on my laptop except external CD/DVD drives. I've called customer support but they were no help.

Here's what I've done so far:
1) Updated USB drivers
2) Uninstalled then reinstalled USB drivers
3) Performed full system recovery via recovery disk that came with laptop
4) Tried all three USB ports on laptop, same result

The laptop has Windows XP Home SP2. Any help would be appreciated! :approve:

try using other known good usb perhiprals on the laptop in question. if they don't work on the laptop, you're looking at a laptop with bad usb hardware.

I am looking to get another portable hard drive to be used for my Vista OS.

I have been trying to find an external hard drive that has an input for USB, firewire 400, and firewire 800, with no external power supply needed. I only need around 60-100gb, nothing more. One that is slim/small, and extremely portable..

I have been searching for a while with no luck... if anyone knows where I can find one, please let me know.

I have budget laptop that I use primarily as a desktop replacement and I've upgraded just about every piece that can be upgraded, RAM hard disk, OS... and now I would like to add a decent external monitor, and good wireless keyboard / mouse combo.

The laptop only has VGA output and a max. native resolution of 1280x800 on the laptop's display. I've used it before to watch dvds on my TV, but the resolution was something very low like 600x800, IIRC. I'm not sure why, though.

Anyway, for the new monitor, I am looking at 24 and 27inch 1080 HD LCDs, with 1920x1080 max. resolution. The 27 incher actually has really good price, so I am thinking to go for it, but I am not sure what other components I would need to be able to take advantage of it. I dont want to get it and be limited to 600x800 pixels due to the VGA output. The panel does support VGA and DVI-D interface types, so I presume I need some sort of converter to get from analog back to digital. But is VGA limited to the laptop's native resolution?

Thanks for any suggestions / input.

A:Adding an external display - questions

You should be able to use a VGA-DVI converter on either your video output or a DVI-VGA converter (might come with the monitor) on the cable input side. You may also wish to read the Intel report on some issues with this chipset at Graphics — Unable to use the native resolution, such as 1920x1080, 1680x1050 and 1440x900 I seriously doubt you'd be relegated to 800x600 resolution though.
