Questions about ATA user behavior analysis time (21 days)

Q: Questions about ATA user behavior analysis time (21 days)

in this video Laura E. Hunter from Microsoft describes behavior analytics: https://youtu.be/hNZdboDvnuU?t=1251
She says that ATA will analyze the behavior in a domain for 21 days and declare this as normal behavior. After the 21 days ATA will report unusual user behavior based on the 21 days analysis.
I have two questions about this:
1. Can we see the progress of the analysis somewhere? I searched through the ATA-center but there is nothing. Is it possible to see it in some kind of logfile or the Mongo-DB?
2. We have started ATA with one DC. What happens if we add our other DCs later? Will the analysis recognize behavior from those, also when the 21 days are already over?
I did not find anything about this 21 days analys period in the documentation. I'm more than happy with a hint if I have overseen something there.
Thanks in advance

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

A few days ago I had some strange behavior on my laptop, I couldn't open any of my antivirus software that I have, McAffee (which I trash already) and Malwarebytes. Every time I tried to open any of the software mentioned, I got errors windows or blank windows… more less errors everywhere. Windows 7 became very unstable after that, so I decide to do a clean installation, now things are working normal, but at the back of my head I am wondering if this was some type of infection.
I would appreciate if someone could help me to check on this, please.

The problem started a few days ago with our browsers running slow and sometimes timing out. I then started to notice that icons and menus looked slightly different and that administrator shield icons started showing up on files and icons also when clicking on buttons on menus such as windows update the menu would flicker.
Was suspicious so checked processes and services and such and that's when I noticed that whenever something was downloaded off internet even just a web page link document under it's properties in the general tab at bottom it says this file came from another computer and has been blocked for your computers safety with a box to unblock it. I searched more and found a lot of files including my pictures that had three new users 2 named unknown with a long number beginning with S-1-0...... and another listed as UUID with a long number and ending saying Mcx1-my user name-PC which I know is my media extender for my Xbox but the other 2 users were never there. The last thing that has been happening is when I boot to safe mode with networking so I can try doing a scan with my main anti virus program the action center gives me a warning saying that Windows security center is disabled please enable it now, I go to services and click to start it and it immediately stops, I try to run a scan with my antivirus and it says it can't start without Windows security center being enabled.

Recently, while playing World of Tanks, I have had random crash to desktop issues. To my knowledge they only happen during match play ( my old computer roommate is using) when cpu and gpu load is probably heavy. Before moving on I put a 3.1 amd 64 x2 cpu init has full 8g memory and a 1g GeForce 210. I know the 250w PSU needs to be updated but was going to let the others do that. Would this lack of power cause a game to simply crash to desktop while everything else remained stable? My feeling is it is probably a driver (read NVidia has notorious conflicts with WoT) or setting or other software conflict. Have gone through the uninstall/reinstall, rolled back drivers a full three versions, disabled any hd audio conflicts route. I think if something wasn't getting the power CPU or GPU I would get blue screen of death or shutdown. Any help.

I just picked up a VivoTab RT and have many options on the thing thus far, so I wanted to make a thread for others in the market and for anyone to possibly help me around the shortcomings I see with the device.

Firstly, why I purchased it - I saw it on clearance for $250 with keyboard dock and couldn't pass up giving it a try at that price - been looking for something with a bright screen to use outside and something that could replace both my Nexus 10 and Win7 laptop with one device, to make things simpler, especially when traveling. I found myself always bringing both devices, because even though I much preferred using the Nexus 10 for the majority of things, some tasks along the productivity side were simply much easier with a Windows based laptop.

So Windows RT, I was expecting to hate it based upon the amount of times I have heard it trashed. Metro is not bad at all, a good interface and although the app selection is minimal all the major players are there, I haven't yet found myself needing something that isn't available. Overall, I like it, in some ways better than my loved Android, but now, the shortcomings:

1. I am greatly missing Chrome, I now know why I left IE years ago and never looked back.
2. Some websites display as mobile and I do not see an option within the browser to request the full site.

Any work-arounds for my issues?

If I were to look into getting a similar device running full win8 what would you recommend? If one of my requirements i... Read more

A:A few days with Windows RT - comments, questions

As far as a Tablet, I'm sure it's OK, there are just no good Store apps. There are a few, but most of them are wastes.

But Chrome, Chrome is in the store, it's free. Are you saying it's locked to IE? It shouldn't be, search for Google Chrome in the Store, and download it.

Are you sure this is an RT tablet - Because RT has NO desktop.

Hi guys,

I'd just like to ask how is McAfee McAfee AV / Internet Security doing these days...?

A friend was asking me the other day and I really did not know what to tell her because I have not been using McAfee since 1998.

May I have some inputs as to McAfee's performance today from you guys? Maybe some strong points and low points perhaps..What about slowdowns during usage?

It's AV(only) as compared to say, Avast's or AVG or Avira's AV..?

It's Internet Security Suite as compared to say, Avast IS 2016 or Emsisoft IS..?

Or if I'll choose an ALL FREE software config that can (well if it can) suffice for McAfee IS protection what will it be..?

AVG Free + TinyWall + ERP + MBAE free + HMP..perhaps..?

Any suggestions as to the all-free combo as well as the ideas on McAfee AV and IS performance is very welcome
Thanks a lot

A:How is McAfee AV / Internet Security doing these days and some questions

I would not advice you to use mcafee , but it is not great in my opinion , confusing gui and the price what you pay for the suite is way to high! I cannot comment on the way it performes on a machine , like any other security product it may vary on each different machine. what kind of user is your friend? does she have computer knowledge or is she a novice? there are better av's ou there and for free also! like AVG or Avast which are better detection wise. If she wants a paid product go for emsisoft internet security. a nice free setup imho would be : AVG free or Avast free ( Hardened mode ) and Comodo Firewall ( Cruelsisters settings ) and an anti exploit like Malwarebytes anti exploit free or Hitman Pro Alert ( Paid ) protect against browser and software exploits.

Also as always thanks techspot members you sure do make a great help

Of course, the 1.7 GHz Pentium M is better than the Celeron M, because 1.7 is larger than 1.6

Hi -

My 4 year old Dell Inspiron E1505 with Windows Vista OS has been running slow when I boot up (5 to 6 minutes before start up is complete). Once the start up is complete, connecting to the Wi-Fi in the house, takes a while to connect (another 5-6 minutes).

After the computer is booted up, I can close the laptop, and when I open it back up, it gets going without any hesitation. I have run the spyware (Ad-ware) and anti-virus (AVG) and receive a clean bill of health. When I ran HJT, I noticed some items that were considered suspect when researched. I cannot be for sure though, and it would be great if someone can identify what needs/can be moved to possibly help clean up the laptop.

Any help would be great. Thanks.

All of the attached DMP files are of the IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL (a) bug check.

This indicates that Microsoft Windows or a kernel-mode driver accessed paged memory at DISPATCH_LEVEL or above.

This bug check is issued if paged memory (or invalid memory) is accessed when the IRQL is too high. The error that generates this bug check usually occurs after the installation of a faulty device driver, system service, or BIOS.

I use an external firewire based sound card sometimes with my Z61m (PreSonus Firebox).  This last time I went to use it, the application software that I use would not recognize the card as being present. I went into system, hardware manager, and got a message that I was not signed in as an administrator.  Never happened before. I have 3 accounts on this machine.  Mine (an administrator account), one for my wife, and one for my son. When I press the thinkvantage button to and hit the 'system information' button it shows that my son is the current user! How can this be and does anyone know of a fix for it?

We need a way to be able to "switch user" on remote PCs connected to VPN for those rare times we need to logon with admin rights to uninstall software.  We use Remote Assistance most of the time to support off-site systems and it works for
everything except uninstalling since a UAC prompt will pause the RA session per Microsoft as expected behavior at https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ee844127%28v=ws.10%29.aspx.  If we RDP to a system that is logged onto VPN we can get logged
on, but during the process of "switch user" the VPN connection will drop.  Windows 7 appears to treat the RDP connection (while someone else is logged on) just like a regular "switch user" -- these both drop the VPN connection.
A fair number of articles say the VPN connection needs to have its properties configured to "Allow other people to use this connection" so that the connection will not drop.  Perhaps this worked years ago when Windows 7 was a little bit younger,
but it does NOT work today. Is there a solution to this issue that does not involved a 3rd party VPN solution?

Okay, this is a strange one. I have included all the troubleshooting steps I've tried, so please read through before making suggestions.

Last night out of the blue, after always working perfectly, my mouse pointer started to randomly freeze for a second or two. When it did move, it moved smoothly and normally; but every few seconds or so it would get stuck for a moment (you can check out what kind of mouse it is in my specs). The mouse wheel and buttons are fine, no problems at all; just the pointer is messing with me. The touchpad works perfectly as well.

It works perfectly after a reboot. But over time it starts to break down again. In fact, I left it alone overnight, and this morning the pointer would barely move at all.
I rebooted again, and noticed that at the blue "Restarting" screen the mouse pointer was instantly back to normal. But again, after reboot it would be fine at first but then start acting up, getting worse as time went on.

Troubleshooting I have already tried:
1. Replaced the mouse battery.
2. Removed the USB receiver and put it back in.
3. Uninstalled the drivers, rebooted, Windows installed generic HID-compliant driver.
4. Malware scan
5. Tried a different mouse

Oddly, after trying a different mouse and then switching back to the original, it worked fine for much longer before starting to break down again. At the time of this post, the pointer is sticking but not as badly, and taking longer to deteriorate.

I'm about to try a system ... Read more

Is this okay? I usually shut my laptop off every night before bed. But lately I have been having shutdown and start up problems. Something is causing Windows to hang during shutdown, and therefore I have to hold the power button down for it to turn off.
Doing this at night, then causes Windows not to want to boot up in the morning. It eventually boots up and loads fine after a few attempts. So instead of having to deal with the frustration of doing this every night, is it acceptable to leave it on for a few days at a time?

(And in regards to the problem my laptop is having, My CD-ROM is also broken..so at this time, I'm unable to use the Windows recovery disk :/)

A:Leaving Laptop on for a few days at a time.

It won't hurt it as long as it has enough ventilation. Don't stuff it into a corner or anything. You could also set it to hibernate, which basically turns it off without shutting down Windows. Of you could just put it in standby, which uses more power but basically does the same thing.

What part do I need to replace (because I know I need to replace something) in order to get my laptop back to its original condition? All the replys from other people about this type of situation always say use air to blow out dust but that is clearly not the case for me. I left my laptop on for days and it wasnt on a flat surface. I basically just need to know what i need to replace in my laptop and I can just purchase the new part and install it myself. I am aware of laptop cooling pads but I just want to fix the problem. I would really appreciate ANY help from anyone who knows which part is getting ho... Read more

Brand new user.

a. The new PC came with McAfee anti virus.
Should I use it ?

Is it as good as AVG, e.g., which I used on my old W7 PC ? Use them both ?

b. And, how do I turn on the "Defender" anti virus which I understand is part of
the W10 package ?

Would it interfere with McAfee or AVG ? How good is it ?

c. How do I turn on the Firewall; I'm assuming there is one like in W7 ?

Much thanks,

A:New W10 User Questions (Basic Questions, Please)

McAfee, AVG and Defender are all anti-virus programs and you should only run one. In fact Defender will get turned off when another one is installed.

Right click the Start button and select Control Panel.

Then select Security and Maintenance and under Security it will show your the status of the Firewall, Virus and Spyware and which program is running what.

Control panel also has links to Defender and Firewall.

That McAfee is a trial version and at some point you will have to buy it.

Jumping into the new year, we?re proud to announce the first significant update in our monthly release cycle that carries the major version ?2018?. The main goal for our development team this month was to streamline and improve the user experience of our most important defence wall against new and unknown malware threats: The Behavior Blocker.

When you open the main user interface of Emsisoft Anti-Malware, you?ll notice that we have merged the panel of the Application Rules with that of the Behavior Blocker. This was a logical move as the two are closely related to the same thing: Defining which of the active programs shall be monitored, are trustworthy, or should be prevented from starting up. Instead of manually creating rules for specific program paths, you can now easily double-click one of the active processes to define a new ?allow?, ?monitor? (default) or ?block? rule. The new application list also shows nicely which programs are excluded from monitoring as it integrates the Exclusions list too.

In the same set of improvements we?re launching a new feature to create application rule templates that professional users can now define via the Emsisoft Enterprise Console. In situations where a specific program needs to be excluded from protection across the entire network, or when a specific unwanted program needs to be blocked from running globally, it?s now an easy task to implement that with templates that also support wildcards and environment ... I am on Windows 7 32 Bit. And I recently had a malware attack. The symptoms are:

Within days, I could not shutdown, restart, move files (could copy though), cannot access hard disk drives. I also cannot run commands using cmd.exe as an administrator. Running cmd.exe as administrator and typing in commands, still gives "Administrator privileges required".
After a few days, now, profiles of google chrome, virtual comodo dragon and other softwares are malfunctioning.
The internet sign shows connected, though cannot surf the internet with any browser, except with Virtual Comodo Dragon.
An autorun virus places shortcuts and .exe files on flash drive, changing names of copied files and folders, after deletion of the old files from the flash drive.
Searching and Cleaning with Malwarebytes Antimalware, finds around 500 infections from Trojans and Virus Ramnit ONLY and the infections appear again after deletion and rescan.
I would like to know what virus is this? And though I am going to perform a clean installation, I would like to know what can be done, to get rid of this virus and prevent reinfection when I use the pendrive after reinstallation again.

Just want to start off by saying I'm a noob so bear with me.

Background: We have multiple fire stations running Vista Business where there could be 20 users logged onto the PC at any given time, thanks to "fast user switching" We encourage fast user switching its just, the users never log off and after weeks of not rebooting its starting to cause issues.

Goal: I' am trying to write a script or a task that will run that would log off users who have been inactive for 2-3 days. I do not want this to affect the others users who are already logged on the the PC.

A:Force user logoff after 3 days of inactivity

Hello Alex, and welcome to Vista Forums.

I'm not sure how to do what you are wanting, but as a workaround for now, you can use Task Manager in an administrator account to log off these users.

I just watched a YouTube video of a Win7 Image Restoration.
The author indicated he had trouble restoring a System Image that was over 30 days old, due to the fact that the 30 day activation period for Win7 had expired from the time the System Image was made. It returned an error message for an Image that was over 30 days old, whereas an Image that was restored within 30 days of making it did not. Can anyone definitively shed some light on this? Do I have to create a new System Image each 30 days to remain protected due to Microsoft activation requirements?

Hi everyone.

I recently bought a custom-made computer from a well established business in the UK.

The computer arrived and as I was installing everything onto it, the internet dropped out a few times. I thought nothing of it and continued. After a day or two, the dropping out happened more and more until after about 4-6 days, it become unusable.

I contacted the business, and they sent out a new network card. Whilst I was waiting for this to arrive, I tried using a USB adaptor instead of the installed card. This worked fine, until again, after 2 days or so, it started having the same issues and then stopped working completely after a similar amount of time.

The new network card has now arrived and after 2 days, the errors seem to start to be happening again. It has dropped out 3 times now and looks as though to be getting more frequent like before.

I have tried numerous attempts to fix the errors - resetting the adaptor, reinstalling the adaptor, pausing anti-virus, and all the other methods I could find online - but none have made any difference. Using the troubleshooter works okay for the first few times, but as the issue gets worse, it becomes less and less effective. The errors it reports change but most often it is related to a gateway not being available, or there being some form of IP issue.

Perhaps worth noting is that I use my phone as a hotspot as the internet signal is terrible where I have the computer. However, I've tested it, and it works absolutely fi... Read more

I previously had a topic opened on this. That post I bumped twice and didn't receive any answer to my questions, so trying once again.

I have an application infected issue that is preventing me from running any EXE files as well as the GMER and DDS applications outlined in the Sticky Thread. I received a response to run the Rkill application but that thread was closed out before I could ask any additional questions.

I'm not well versed when it comes this stuff so I wasn't sure if I was executing the Rkill application correctly because I'm still unable to execute the analysis tools.

Any help on this would be greatly appreciated, If I need to execute the Rkill on the infected machine please let me know and walk me through that process with a little detail if at all possible. Also, I'm not able to connect to the internet or boot up in Safe mode on the infected machine, just an FYI.

Again, any help is greatly appreciated.

A:Trying this one More time - Application infected issue unable to run analysis tools

Hi -

You've apparently been living with this for quite a long time. It might have been easier and certainly faster to do a restore from recovery disks or recovery partition by now.

It's very difficult for us to assist in this medium without any logs to work from. We just have no way of knowing what's on the machine otherwise. What operating system is this? Your profile indicates XP, but sometimes folks don't always post for the same OS as in their profile.

You said you tried to use rkill. Did you try all 4 versions? If so, what happened when you did so?

amateur's instructions here are really all there is to it

Did you see a black command window open when you ran the rkill tool? Did explorer.exe cycle (all desktop icons disappear and return)? Did you receive a message from the infection that rkill was infected? Did you leave that message open and ignore it, then run rkill again and again?

Does a browser open, such as Firefox ? It doesn't necessarily matter right now if the internet connects, I just want to know if it opens.

Please take your time, and try to answer all the questions as best you can.

I've been invaded!!! The mouse cursor is quite irratic. When performing a single click on a form, it is sometimes interpreted as a double click. When dragging a form the form doesn't respond or it will respond to the drag sporadically. When attempting to highlight text, image, etc., the highlight doesn't happen or only a partial highlight will occur. It is very annoying which is what I'm sure is the mission of the designer of this bug, virus, trojan, whatever. Also, at the same time this invader changed the format of the system date/time form standard time to military and month/day/year to year/month/day. I've ran the AVG anti-virus program and AVG root toolkit - they've both came up without finding any foreigners. I've ran Spybot and it to came up empty-handed. The operating system on this computer is XP sp3.

A:Abnormal Mouse Cursor Behavior, Date/Time reformatted

System manufacturer and model?

FWIW: System problems such as have (so far) described...may occur for various reasons...malware may be among them, but let's try a few things.

First...I'd like you to run the chkdsk /r command. Start/Run...type chkdsk /r and hit Enter. Type Y in response to onscreen query and hit Enter. Reboot the system and let the command execute, the system will boot into XP when the command has completed.

Second...I'd like you to enter the BIOS and check the time/date reflected there and ensure that all settings are still as they should be.

Third...if your mouse still behaves erratically, try a different mouse.

You can postpone it indefinitely I think by just ignoring the message and closing the window. If you want, you can uninstall the KB3035583 and simply upgrade via the Media Creation Tool whenever you are ready.

Some questions from a new IE9 user:

Is there any way to repeat your search query without constantly having to retype it into the address bar each time? In IE8 the last search query always remained in the separate search box making it easy to repeat the search, even in another tab. Searching from the address bar is driving me crazy, especially since I find myself retyping the same searches over and over again.

Is there any way to put Favorites back in the upper left corner where it belongs? Having it in the upper right corner is incredibly counterintuitive.

Is there an option to display a progress bar so you can see whether a site is loading slowly or not at all?

So far I'm regretting my decision to upgrade from IE8, but hopefully if I can solve the above issues I might start to appreciate it more.

A:Some questions from a new IE9 user:

If you don't find the improvements in speed of IE9 over IE8 too big or don't really care about them, I would suggest you revert back to IE8.
About your first question, I'm not completely sure, but it's probably a no; unless you do a search, then open results in new tabs while leaving the search results in the original tab.
As for the Favorites, if you're refering to the actual icon, no. The sidebar can, however, be pinned to the left.
It's also a very probable no for the progress bar; you can, of course, use a Network Meter gadget to check up on the internet speed at any time, assuming you use the gadget platform at all.

I finally installed XP on my very old laptop, and although it's working well for the most part, I have a couple of questions about some of the features and functions.

1) After installing all the software I use, I was left with only about 200MB of free disk space. This is not a problem in itself, since I shouldn't need that space for anything else, but when I tried to run the Disk Defragmenter, it said it needed at least 15% free space to properly complete. Does this just mean it will take a really long time with less space, or that it really won't work at all? Any way out of this dillema?

2) Some useful icons, such as the Volume Adjust, and the Safely Remove Hardware Icon, have dissappeared from the System Tray. I right clicked on it and went to "Customize Notifications," and clicked on "Always Show" for the ones I wanted, but they're still not showing up. Any suggestions?
