ComboFix Gives Error Messages And Won't Run

Q: ComboFix Gives Error Messages And Won't Run

Mods: If this is better posted somewhere else then please feel free to move it.

I had a Dell notebook which I had worked on before and after running CCleaner, MalwareBytes, Spybot S&D, Windows Security Essentials (each of which found a lot of really nasty stuff) and updating SpywareBlaster it still had some problems which none of the previous programs would detect, and after they all gave it a clean bill of health I knew something was still wrong. I then used my trusty ComboFix program which for the first time ever refused to run and gave a variety of weird error messages about "can't run on a 64-bit system", "can't run with AVG installed" and other similar things.

Well, since the computer had the Vista Home Premium SP2 32-bit OS on it and didn't have AVG installed I knew something was Rotten in Denmark so I went back to the BC forums and found the TDSSKiller, which I downloaded and ran. See the log below for the results:

Needless to say this nailed down the problem but I decided to run ComboFix once again just for the Heck of it and guess what? It ran flawlessly and did not detect any additional malware. I have used ComboFix on numerous occasions without any problem whatsoever, so the moral of this story is that if it doesn't work then try some other tool. It is still a great program but this shows that it can be suppressed by at least one other piece of nasty malware lurking around out there.

I hope this is of some help to someone else who may have a similar problem with ComboFix...

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

I was trying to install an HP Printer. It would not install. I called HP and an HP Tech accessed my computer remotely. He pulled up a bunch of error and stopped working messages. He said my computer was about to crash. He wanted a ton of money to fix it. I have no money, so here I am. I have attached a summary of my computer. I am really computer stupid so any help I can get will be truly appreciated.

I don't know where to begin. Let's start be deleting all old versions of Java in your control panel and updating at: java.com: Java + You
Also, stop using ToolWiz and Optimizer Pro These Registry Cleaners cause the kind of problems you're experiencing.

I am using Windows ME in a new Dell Dimension 4100 series, Pentium 3, 1.1 gig, MSN Office 2000 Professional.

I am having trouble saving a word document that was e-mailed to me. I did a "save as" into "my documents." Then I changed something in the document, and I saved it. Upon closing the document I was asked if wanted to save changes and I said yes.(this confused me as I don't normally get this when I do the normal 'save' under the 'file tab')
Later when I went to open this document, I got an error message, "Locked for editing by another user, click notify to open as a read only copy". When I clicked on notify, I got another error message,"Winword has caused an error in winword.exe. Winword will now close.Try restarting your computer."

When I tried to delete this document, I got the message "Cannot delete file. Access is denied. Source file may be in use."

I experimented and again saved into my documents, again made a change, hit save and closed the doc. When I got the message asking me if I wanted to save the changes, I said no. This procedure enabled me to reopen the document.

I don't understand what is happening and why the key seems to be how I answer the question, do you want to save the changes?

Can someone help?

A:Word doc-error messages: locked, winword error, source file

SOUNDS LIKE (tho I'm not sure), that Word didn't exit properly at least that one time. Next time it happens, and you believe Word to be closed, hit Ctrl-Alt-Del and see if "winword" is still in the task list. If so, click on it and hit End Task. Then delete your file.

If your programs aren't "really" closing down, you may just need to clean up your hard drive. Follow the instructions at:

A:safe mode and startup error and error messages

Have you tried going into set-up and resetting all controls to "default setting"?

You're computer is most likely going into default mode because there is something else wrong with it.

You most likely haven't ruined it........jus need to take this one step at a time

What were the first error messages you were getting?

What happened the first time your computer started in safe mode all by itself?

Okay, I'm just looking to pick up a couple ideas from the kind and wonderful people here.

I use combofix fairly regularly with my job, I'm lead tech for a small district of a large corp. and I was introduced to combofix a couple years ago and found that it simplifies the cleanup and removal of certain malware to where I can take care of them in mere moments.

And so I had a customer with sysguard on it, sysguard is not a new bug, nor is it exceptionly bad, just annoying. Program wise its actually very similar to smitfraud, and can be removed using some of the same tactics. But combofix can kill it in one fell swoop, unfortunately when I ran it this last time I received the error Not Admin when it started scanning. I went though everything I could think of to find where this permission error was coming from, but its WinXP MCE sp3, there are not a lot of choices inside the Administrator Account in SafeMode.

I went and manually removed the hoaxware, much more time consuming. I decided to try combofix again just to see if the bugger was what was stopping it from running, but I get the same error. Everything else I have runs fine, even the batch and com tools that I have.

So, anyone with information would be good. I unfortunately will not be able to post any logs as I do not have access to the computer anymore. I'm mostly looking for ideas that i can try in case I run into this again.

Ok so we are getting the following error on 20+ pc's on a domain based network. We get this error on basically every PC we log into and run combofix on. We have tried MANY rootkit removal utilities with no luck. (ie malwarebytes, combofix, sdfix, rootkit revealer, Trend rootkit, mcafee rootkit, superantispyware, etc...) The server has also been scanned... We've deleted the users profiles on the server and on the local PC's, we've even completely reloaded a PC and added it back to the domain and the message came back immediately after running combofix on a clean profile. After the error pops up it prompts us to reboot the computer and then it runs combofix again and finds nothing. If we wait a little while after that it comes back up again... If anyone has seen this or has any input it would be greatly appreciated!

Hello and welcome to BleepingComputer.I take it this is about a corporate network? If so, you really should consider a reformat or having the IT department taking this down. We cannot possibly work on 20 computers at a time in this forum. Besides, while cleaning one computer, malware would spread through the network and reinfected it, and so undo all our work.To have a chance to successfully clean all machines, you will need to isolate all of them, make sure all of them are completely clean as well as any removable storage and only after that reconnect the computers.

I recently was infected by a virus so I ran Malware Bytes which usually takes care of any viruses pretty well. After it scanned there was one that it said it could not be removed so I assumed it was one that would be cleaned upon reboot. I scanned again anyway after reboot several times but it comes back with nothing but my browsers keep redirecting to random sites. Previously to fix this, i've used ComboFix which has successfuly fixed that. I still had the Combofix file on my computer so I ran Rkill first (which only killed a Google Updater) then CombFix. My ZA firewall put up connection alerts several times for IE and Firefox, and either accepting or declining them, I get an error message from ComboFix that says "error - win32 only" in English and several other languages and it never starts. I have XP pro on my machine, i've downloaded the most recent one (combofix) available from here at BC and even tried to run it in safe mode. What is the problem? Can anyone help? Anyone experience this?

I downloaded the newest version of Combofix on 7/8/10. When it is run it detects a Rootkit. I say OK to reboot. XP hangs during shutdown. After 4 hours it still has not shut down and rebooted. If I do a cold boot Combofix then runs but finds no problems and deletes nothing upon completion. If I reboot and run ComboFix again the same thing happens (finds a Rootkit but hangs during reboot). I put a different hard drive with XP that I know if be malware free. When Combofix is run it has the same exact issue.

I recently moved and when I plugged my computer back up everything was a mess. I got the mouse and keyboard working and got rid of several viruses among other things. I believe that my computer is clean now; however the printer won't work, I get a "One Button Application" error message that reads, "The Service has returned a service-specific error code". Also, my Windows Media Player won't run. The error message is, "Cannot play back the audio stream:no audio hardware is available, or the hardware is not responding." I don't know what this one button application is. Thanks in advance for your assistance.

A:error messages HELP, HELP, HELP!!!!

First Question:

Are you running an HP computer?

I ask because HP has a One Button Disaster Recovery. If you are trynig to run the service as a user account and not a Local System Account you will get that error. Any service that tries to run as a user account can get a simular message.

Right-click My Computer and from the drop down menu click Manage.
From the Services and Applications menu, click Services.
From the right scroll down menu, double-click Task Scheduler.
Click the Log On tab, select the Local System Account and Allow Service to Interact with Desktop options, and then click Apply.
Click the General tab, click Start.

from Microsoft KB article 223170

I would also ensure you have all the latest drivers (NIC, Video, Audio and DirectX). Once you have them all downloaded:

Right-click My Computer, select Manage.
In the left side highlight Device Manager.
In the right side, expand (click the "+") Display Adapters and right click every adapter listed and choose Uninstall.
Do the same for Network Adapters.
Expand Sound Video and Game Adapters, find the one on the list that represents your Audio Card and uninstall it.
From the Action drop down list, choose Scan for Hardware Changes.
Once they have all been replaced, Update DirectX (never let DirectX have the last word on your drivers) then update the drivers (if you weren't prompted to do so during the 're-discovery')

Let me know how it goes

Everytime I try to open Adobe Premiere or Windows Movie Maker and import a file I get a message that "windows has encountered a problem" and when I click "don't send" it completely closes the program. Does anybody know anything about this?

A:Error messages

next time it happens. click SEND. this sends an error report to Microsoft. If a fix is available. It will show you. Then post back and let us know what happens. If that fixes the problem, fine. If not, we will have to work on it.

Hi, I've had a problem that I wasn't able to get any support for here a few months ago, but it seemed so similar to others I'd seen that I followed the steps of HJT and superantispyware as wel as combofix.
now I have three error messages at startup. I'm virus free, but don't know how to make them go away, they're different from others that I've seen in people's posts.

here's my hjt report

two messages come up when i log onto my user.

Error loading C:\WINDOWS\bsx5.dll

Error loading C:\WINDOWS\bs3.dll

how do i fix the problem??

A:error messages

Thats causes by adware.

Please do the following:

In IE go to Tools -> Internet Options -> and delete Files and Cookies.

To check for and remove any Spyware or Adware that may be installed on your machine download, update, run, and fix ALL problems found by either of the above mentioned programs. You may need to reboot and have the scan run at startup. Run it again to make sure all components have been removed.

Ad-aware and Spybot:

To check for a virus please visit one of the following sites for a free online virus scan. Even if you a virus scanner installed, this one gives you a second opinion, and it will be up-to-date which yours might not be.

Trend Micro:
If you have Kazaa, it has to go. Use Kazaa Begone to remove it and replace with Kazaa Lite. Kazaa is full of Spyware, Kazaa Lite is not. Both of these spread viruses.

Kazaa Begone:

Kazaa Lite:
Then post a Hijack This Log to have someone analysis it for further cleaning/recommendations.

I keep getting 2 constant error messages about 2 minutes after startup. They started after I defragged my computer.

One is:
textdirector.exe has stopped working

and the other is:directordirector.exe has stopped working.

I have got some other ones but at the moment these are the only two that have popped up. I can click "close program" but they just pop up again in 5~ seconds. I run Vista 32 bit

A:Error messages.

Can you find 'em in your task manager? I would suggest ending them when the are popped up, but I have no idea what they are or what they do. But since I can't find any information on them existing at all, I doubt they are very important.

Hello and welcome.

Before we start working with your log, you are running Hijack This from a temporary location. This needs to have its own folder. Please download HijackThis Self-installer

If each file exists, it will appear in blue under that window when you click on it. Click on Delete on Reboot. Next click on > "Delete on Reboot" and click on "All Files". Please do this even if this option is already checked. You will get a message saying "File with be deleted on next reboot, click "Yes". Process and Reboot now?" Click "Yes" to reboot

I recommend a system restore. Go to Start, type System, then click on System Restore (hopefully it comes up...). Follow the instructions to restore your system back to how it was a day or two ago. If that doesn't work then try this:

Click Start and type cmd into the search box, press Enter. Up pops the command prompt. Type in regsvr32 C:\Windows\System32\ExplorerFrame.dll and press enter. You might have to reboot; I'd do it anyway.

If that still doesn't fix the problem, I just found this patch from Microsoft:
Error message when you try to start Internet Explorer 7 in Windows Vista: "You must be an administrator to open Internet Explorer on this desktop"
It's not directly linked to your problem but I found someone who this patch had worked for.

Hope that helps

Can someone advise as to where I should specifically post a request for information regarding an Internet Expoler error message I am receiving?

Mike Fichtner

P.S. The message basically tells me that Internet Explorer has encountered a problem and will close, and offers a "send eror report" box. I then may get another message that an instruction at "0x01axxxe" referenced memory at "0x01dxexxx". The memory could not be read.

These errors appear when I close an on-line session with my Comcast service.

Coupla weeks ago I got a virus on my computer. My antivirus software found it in a scan, but couldn't remove the files for me. On the advice of my antivirus company (Bullguard), I manually deleted the files (from windows/system32).

The virus is gone, but every time I log on to my computer, I get three RunDll error messages, saying "the specified module cannot be loaded" (or something like that). I get one message for each file I deleted.

Is there any way to get rid of these messages? It seems that some remnant of the virus is calling for the files to be opened, but then finding the files are absent. Or something.

Any ideas?

Reading through similar problems posted by others it seemed like it might be relative information that very recently a hotmail e-mail account that I have had for a very long time was blocked by the system administrators. It was sending junk mail to a bunch of recipients that I don't know and in turn was getting postmaster delivery failure notices in the inbox for all of them.
