Solved: Unable to open application shortcuts on desktop

Q: Solved: Unable to open application shortcuts on desktop

Recently i used this program called ADW Cleaner and long story short, on reboot it seemed to have screwed up my registries or something because i am unable to launch programs like Google Chrome, Steam, Skype etc.. from the desktop.
I am able to "Open file location" and then launch the program from there, But when i double click the icon on the desktop nothing happens, not even a loading bar, just absolutely nothing. I can open folders on the desktop but that's it. I have tried searching for hours on how to fix this but i cant understand what the problem could be. This is really frustrating and any help would be extremely appreciated!

Thank you.

Preferred Solution: Solved: Unable to open application shortcuts on desktop

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hi,Recently i used this program called ADW Cleaner and accidentally clicked the "LOG" option rather than "Repair". Whenever I am fullscreen and try to use my shortcuts I made to start up other programs they don't work e.g Ctrl + Alt + p to open winamp while in fullscreen mode and it will not respond. As soon as I minimize or alt+tab it will work.

How can I get it to work while in full screen?

A:[SOLVED] Windows shortcuts wont open while in a fullscreen application

Which software did you use to make the shortcuts/macro?

When you are running a full screen application, such as a game, you usually want that application to take the keyboard input and not another application behind the scenes. The Windows key is the exception to this, although some keyboards come with an option to disable this, as many (mostly gamers it seems) do not want that functionality whilst playing a game (e.g., the game minimising when the key is accidentally pressed). Often, the same types of applications will keep the keyboard focus even when in Window Mode. The easiest way to achieve what you want, is to have a keyboard with programmable macro keys. There are keyboards with 50+ keys available just for running macros.

This means that custom shortcuts may not work. The ALT + TAB key combination may or may not work, as some applications that require keyboard focus might be preventing that combination from working, perhaps because those keys do something inside the application.

I am trying to help a friend who is TOTALLY non computer saavy. I have been helping him for a long time, but this time something got into his system that is horrible.

This system is running XP. About 2 weeks ago, all of his desktop icons vanished, so he had a blank desktop. When he went under Start>Programs, there was nothing there either. so I look and EVERYTHING in C:\Documents and Settings>NAME>Documents was hidden. AVG found a trojan, and system was cleaned using MalwareBytes, AdAware, and SpyBot S&D. I unhid everything and his desktop icons came back as did most of the Programs entries. But the start menu now is stuck with the 98 look and not the XP look (like the little user pic and all). But, icons and shortcuts worked. Then 2 days ago he calls again saying nothing works.

Now, the icons are there, but when you try to open a program the "Open With" dialogue comes up. This is true of desktop icons, Start Menu stortcuts, and even .EXE files selected in Windows Explorer. The only way to open a program and to right-click, and choose "Run As". It pops up a dialogue box with the current user selects and gives option to chosoe another user (there is non) and the program will open. So, I got the .EXE and the link repairs from the Doug Knox site and attempted to repair the associations. No effect. I have run CCleaner with no registry errors found. Have run AVG, Spybot S&D and Maleware Bytes in safemode and removed everything. I am not sure... Read more

I'd attempted to install XP Service Pack 3 via Windows Update. An error message occurred halfway through (can't remember the exact message at the moment) and the installation failed. The computer was fine after this and I continued to work on it until I shut it down.

The next day I booted up to find that all my desktop and quick launch shortcuts and desktop files had lost their icons. All shortcuts now have the extention .lnk. Nothing happens when I double click on any of files. This is also the case in the Start menu, where all program shortcuts don't work and neither does Settings -> Control Panel. I also cannot open any folders on my desktop, including My Computer.

I managed to open up the command prompt through Task Manager and I've been able to navigate to programs and execute them from there so I know the programs still work. This is the only way I've been able to get online and run programs to try to solve this. I can also open Windows Explorer via command prompt and navigate through folders that way.

Things I've tried:

1. I'd created a System Restore point before attempting the Service Pack installation. Ran System Restore through command prompt in the hope of restoring back to that point but there are no restore points available.
2. Ran an AVG scan. Found nothing untoward.
3. Ran HijackThis. Not an expert by any means on this but it didn't appear to show anything alarming.
4. My hours of searching online led me to Doug Knox'... Read more

This is my first post here.
Question is: How can I define keyboard shortcuts for different open application windows. This is something I do in Linux and it helps a lot when I have many windows open.
Example: I have Internet explorer open, I give it shortcut Ctrl+Shift+A
Then for example VLC player is open, I give it a Ctrl+shift+B

Then I can just press these keys and go from one window to another. This makes a lot of sense when I have 40 windows open. Pressing Alt+tab is not as efficient as this.

A:Defining keyboard shortcuts for different open application windows

[Alt]+[TAB] might not be as effective with that many windows open, but I prefer [Win]+[TAB] as you then get a visual.

Would you method work if for example there were 3 MS word windows, 4 Firefox windows, a regedit window, a res hacker window and 8 windows explorer windows? How would it know which of the 4 firefox windows you wanted?

I've tried making new desktop shortcuts because the old ones won't work. Unfortunately, I get the same message on the new ones as I did on the old, which is: "This file does not have a program associated with it for performing this action. Create an association in the Folder Options control panel." Before, all I needed to do was right click an item in Favorites and "send" to desktop. I went to Folder Options in Control Panel and have no idea what to do.

Earlier today I tried putting most everything on desktop in folders and put the folders into "My Documents". Things like Email sites, TV Guide, IMDb get the same message, but I am able to acess office tools such as new spreadsheets, etc. What have I done wrong?

I would also like to know how to list things to NOT delete from cookies. I've done it before, ages ago, and can't remember how it's done. And I can't find how to "accept cookies" which GMail is telling me I need to do. I never told anything to not accept them.

Hi TSG, I've got a strange problem. Oh, and my laptop does too.

I've recently deleted some things on my laptop, one of which was an odd icon in my start menu, and have since emptied my trash bin unaware of the problem I caused.

Now, the problem I'm currently having is:

- That I'm unable to open any shortcuts and programs via left click, and have to right click > open
- Unable to connect to my wireless connection.
- "My Computer" was not executable and that the "Programs" in my start menu was empty.
- Upon startup, I will also recieve a small window titled " Notification dll has not been registered, program will not work correctly." in regards to my wireless configuration.
- If I try to use System Restore, the window will stay blank.

This being touched upon, I'm not entirely aware of what else I'm unable to do. I'm also very certain my laptop isn't infected with any malware or viruses.

Whatever the problem is, it certainly wasn't related to the other items I had removed from my laptop, those being just games and pictures, so I'm almost certain the file I had deleted from the start menu is the source, or at least part of it. I deleted said file because it didn't have a name I recognized (an abbreviation of something important possibly) and didn't really seem like it belonged there. What I deleted seems to be a very major process or something that controls? some .dll's.

I am trying to fix problems on friends computer, but have run into a few problems trying to resolve them.

The first problem he has is that he is unable to open and desktop folders, my computer, or explorer.
When he tries to open them, after a few seconds all the icons disappear from the screen for a few moments, then reappear. After a pause a message saying that Dr Watson Debugger failed sometimes appears.

The second problem is that although the Internet Explorer home page is set to about:blank, it always displays a seach page and starts to redirect towards onemoresearch.net. It also displays a message about sspMydoom.cih ver 2.018 has infected my machine and click here to see how to get srid of it. Hi Guys,

Since the last win 10 update, my desktop Folder icons do not work right. When I left click I get this
when I right click I get this

The only way I can open a folder (such as Downloads) is to right click, then select open.

I have tried creating new shortcuts and they do not work. Regular program shortcuts work fine.
If I create a new short cut to a file, (ie a photo), I have to right click and select OPEN to view the file, then when I create a shortcut, it does not work unless I right click and select open.

I restored system to earlier date and all is well. When restarting computer I get force fed update.
Selecting NEW from context menu was not there. I fixed that. Why come I get cmd when I try to open a folder??

All assistance will be gratefully appreciated.

So I woke up this morning and tried to get on the internet but all Firefox did was show folder properties. So I checked all the other shortcuts and the same thing. I tried to get into the control panel from the desktop and it puts out an error that the properties for this folder is not available. Also I ran Avast to see if I had some type of virus and when I opened that under every option to click it also had a letter, pressing the said key would be just like clicking on the balloon option. I tried to look this up but I only found this problem for XP and 95/98 OS, which was usually a keyboard issue. I have a KVM with two other computers connected to it and use the same keyboard (this is how I am posting this) so I can't see how I would have a keyboard issue when it works fine with two other computers. Any help would be appreciated.

Let me start from the beginning. About two days ago I get a new internet service provider who graciously installed my new modem right next to my computer. Up to this point I was running on a wireless network so I didn't have to run cat5 cables across my basement. Anyways, I decide I want to change over to the cat 5 cable since it could be done so easily now, and I go to the control panel to open up "Network Connections", but when I double clicked on it nothing happened. No error messages or anything, just no response from the computer period with the exception of a the little hour glass appearing then disappearing next to my cursor. So next to the "Network Connections" icon is another icon labeled "Network Setup Wizard" and I run that. I go through all the screens and questions which afterward I am prompted to reboot my computer so I do so. When my computer reboots and comes back up I notice about 2/3rds of my desktop icons are gone along with a similar portion of my shortcuts on my start menu. My wallpaper reverted back to the windows xp default from the one I had it set to, and although there was an IE icon available whenever I double clicked it another shortcut to IE would appear in my desktop instead of IE opening as it should. I was able to get IE to run through my start menu, but it could not access the internet at all. So I went through "my computer" and was able to locate firefox which had been my main browser anyways,... Read more

I must stay with WIN7 and IE10 for now for various reasons so I need to find a solution.

I would appreciate any suggestions.

Every time I attempt to open Quicken I get this error message "The application failed to initialize properly (0xc0000006). Click on OK to terminate the application." Does anyone know what the problem could be and how I can get around this to open up the program?

A:Unable To Open Up Application

I'd suggest that you ensure that your system has all applicable Windows Updates, then I'd reinstall the program using a fresh download/copy to ensure that it wasn't corrupted when first installed.

Team, I think I have deleted some kind of software from C drive causing shows application unable to open.

Naming some apps:
Protected F Drive
System does not boot sometimes
Refresh takes long time than usual
Control panel not opening
System hangs in windows setting

Kindly help
Attaching screen message

A:Application unable to open

If you went around in drive C deleting stuff, the only hope is System Restore. Right click on This PC > Properties > Advanced System Settings > System Protection tab > System Restore button. Choose a date before you did the deletions; if there is one available.

If that doesn't work, you will have to backup your docs, photos etc to a USB memory stick and re-install Windows. You have too many core components gone bad - Control Panel and Settings. Download MS Media Creation Tool and run it It will Generate a Windows 10 setup DVD or USB memory stick. Boot with the new media and choose Setup.

I use a bridge scoring program, WinScore, with .sco as the file extention. WinScore is loaded on my machine. I am unable to open score sheets sent to me by others using the same program. I get the following message: c:\Documents and Settings\Millie\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\Content.IE\PJQOMEA7\Nov19.sco not a valid Win32 application.
Why, if I have the scoring program on my machine am I unable to open these other score sheets?

A:Unable to open application

Try opening WinScore, going to file>>open and then opening the file. I also noticed you are opening the files from a temp folder, I am not sure how you receive the files, but it is probably a download from a web site. If this is the case, when it says Open or Save, click save and save to a regular folder such as the desktop.

I have some kind of virus. My screen locked up mid-internet surfing and I had to manually restart. Since doing so I have been unable to open any application. I have restarted in safe-mode with commands and was able to restore but the only restore point I could use was on earlier this morning. Even the mouse won't work. If I get it to select something only the right side works if at all.
I have tried to run my mcafee and spyware but when I finally get it up it says nothing found but won't let me run it. The tab and enter key are the only buttons actually working.

Please help if you can...

Hi and Welcome,
What was it that led you to installing Quick Heal? Have you tried uninstalling that to see if that solves the problem?
If not,I suggest you post a HijackThis log in the malware/hjt forum here at TSG.

On my old Win 7 and Win Vista and Win XP laptops I've had no problems opening and viewing my old MPEG-2 video files. My new laptop running Win 8.1 will not allow me to view them.

Windows Media Player will only recognize them as audio files - not video - though the sound will play. Real Player is the same - the application will open and begin playing a file but only as audio file. I've tried the built in Toshiba media player and it shows errors and won't open the files at all.

Again - these are conforming MPEG-2 NTSC 760X480 video file (old analog home movies) captured using an ATI video card dongle to connect to my video source and an old version of capture application ULead Video Studio. These files conform in every way to MPEG-2 standard/format and will run on all of our PC EXCEPT the new one running Win 8.

I bought and loaded a video editing application from Corel and it will open and play these files perfectly so why won't Win Media Player and Real Player recognize them when running behind Windows 8?

Any and All suggestions very much appreciated.

A:Unable to open MPEG-2 Video Files Various Application

According to Wikipedia, the maximum allowed dimensions for an MPEG-2 video are 720x480(NTSC) pixels. It's possible the ULead software driver used to capture this video was not up to spec during recording. As a result it is not correctly recognized by other media players. Since Corel is the parent company for ULead Systems they are most likely aware of this inconsistency and have created software to render the files correctly.

My guess would be that if you re-encode the file(s) using another format the file(s) will play on other media players.

I was wondering if it was possible to open multiple instances of the desktop app or if there are any third party applications which could add such functionality. I would like to use the built in side by side app feature but for programs running in the desktop so I can have something like notepad++ or visual studio open on the left side of the screen and have a steam or twitch chat open on the right so I can free up my second monitor for full screen viewing of videos/games/websites. I know I can do this by resizing the windows manually but it is very clunky and harder to manage when I want to close a program or open new applications.

A:Way to open multiple instances of desktop application?

Right click on the Taskbar gives you multiple choices to arrange open windows (programs). Cascade, Stacked or Side by side.

Dear Techguy,

When i start my computer, after desktop screen everything takes time to open 2 - 4 minute....

please provide some solution for it...

A:Computer Desktop screen application open very slow

Hi and welcome to TSG.

With no knowledge of the system you are using it is very hard to make any realistic assessment. Please provide you exact system specs, either the exact make and model of the PC if its a pre-built system like a HP, Dell or Acer etc. If its a self / custom build what is the exact make and model of the CPU, motherboard, RAM, graphics card, harddrive, Power supply etc. The more info the better.

What operating system are you using and is it 32 or 64 bit?

If you are unsure, please use the TSG System Info utility which can be found in my signature.

Hi @terrya86
I found this on intowindows.com

It may be worth trying....

If for any reason, one or more Windows 7 icons are not showing correctly, you can repair by rebuilding the icon cache. To improve the performance, Windows caches all icons in IocnCache.db file and sometimes it gets corrupted, resulting in broken icons.

Icon cache is a hidden file located in the Local Folder. All you need to do is delete the IconCache.db file and restart your PC so that Windows creates a new IconCache.db file upon system restart.
This guide also works if Windows is showing custom icons even after uninstalling transformation packs and icon packs.

Complete the given below instructions to rebuild the icon cache in Windows:

Step 1: Open Windows Explorer (any folder/drive).

Step 2: As the IconCache is a hidden file, you need to enable ?Show hidden files? option to see the same. To do this, head over to Tools > Folder Options, switch to View tab, and finally enable Show Hidden files, folders, and drives option.

Step 3: Now navigate to C:\Users\username\AppData\Local folder and then delete IconCache.db file. Here username is your user profile name.

Step 4: Reboot your computer to rebuild the icon cache.

Step 5: All icons must appear as they should now. From now onwards, make sure that you create a manual system restore point before attempting to install those fancy transformation packs and icons packs so that you can quickly revert to the default Windows look with a few mouse c... Read more

In the course of making a friend's XP system easier for her to use, I tried to create shortcuts to programs and files present on her system. My goal is to get shortcuts displayed on her desktop, to make access as easy as possible. Her desktop was blank (without shortcuts), except for the background image when I started, and remains so. I tried doing this in several ways. First, via Start, where I clicked and dragged 'Notepad' from there to the desktop. When I stopped clicking and dragging, it was nowhere on the desktop. Then I tried via Windows Explorer, where I found some files of interest to her, right-clicked on each, and selected 'Create Shortcut' from the list. As before, that appeared to work, but the icon immediately vanished from the desktop as before. (I am not at her system right now, but I believe that each shortcut that I created may have been added to her 'Start' list.)

Is there some 'master' switch that permits depositing shortcuts on the desktop for XP?
