USB 3.0 Ports Not Working - Y580

Q: USB 3.0 Ports Not Working - Y580

Y580, Win10 I just purchased a used Y580 cheap because it has non-functional USB 3.0 ports. The USB 2.0 port works fine. When I plug in a USB cable, it doesn't register anything, as if there's no power to the ports. Which leads me to believe it's not a driver issue...but I could be wrong about that. My thought was that the controller on the motherboard might be bad, but I don't know much about laptops, honestly. I'm more of a desktop guy when it comes to hardware. I'm not even sure if the USB controller is onboard or a separate board in the laptop. Any ideas on how to fix this, or am I just out of luck? Thanks. - Brian

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

My front left USB 3.0 ports stopped working a few days ago.  They can still provide power via a USB to Micro USB adapter cable, but will not recognise or power my mouse or headset. My device manager indicates that my Intel(r) USB 3.0 Extensible host controller cannot start (code 10).  I've tried reinstalling this driver, but that didn't sovle the problem. My rear right USB 2.0 port functions regularly.  My front right USB 3.0 port does not work because it has been physically damaged. I'd really like to have at least 2 functional USB ports to work with.  Can anyone help me figure out what's wrong with my left ports, or how I could replace the right front port?  Thanks.

Vista Ultimate 64-bit, ASUS Rampage Formula motherboard, USB mouse and keyboard connected in back ports.

Two things happened: Avira antivirus warned me of some threats which I either ignored or deleted. Windows Update had some updates ready (although I'm not sure if it updated).

I turned off my PC for a couple of hours, turned it back on and realized that my USB keyboard was not working on the password screen.

I eventually unplugged it from the back and plugged it into the front, where it worked. However, my USB mouse did not work when plugged into the second front port, nor did it work when plugged into the front port in which the keyboard worked.

I accessed System Restore using my keyboard and restored to one day previously. When it finished, both keyboard and mouse worked, although I got a pop-up message alerting me that the "drivers for your device could not be installed." When I clicked "OK," the mouse stopped working again.

I have checked BIOS and both mouse and keyboard are recognized, so it does not appear to be a hardware issue.

From what I read online it might be just a fuse or the display itself. I was not able to locate the fuse on the motherboard, if someone can help me find the fuse would be great. At first I was thinking of ordering the display but some people changed the display and the problem was still there. Any advise would be appresiated.P.S. Greetings! I'm currently working on reinstalling win on my cousin's y580 with following specs:Intel(R) Core(TM) i3-3110M CPU @ 2.40GHz8GB RAMGEFORCE GTX 660M Everything went smoothly until the part where I want to install USB 3.0 drivers (responsible for 2x3.0 USB and 2.0 USB port). I tried everything from installing win7 drivers, uninstalling and reinstalling them with Windows Update to forcing INTEL drivers intalation. So far no luck. Browsing the forum I happened to find the topic: https://forums.lenovo.com/t5/Lenovo-P-Y-and-Z-series/USB-3-0-Ports-Not-Working-Y580/m-p/3457050#M149... , where the guy assumes that motherboard is broken cause he bought it with "broken USB ports". That is not the case, ports were working just fine on win8 until the moment win10 was introduced. In the device manager the driver shows the error 10. I also came for advice to my friend using the same notebook with better specs(i7) and they are working fine for him. So my question finally is: have anyone solved this problem for the given spec already and/or is it the case of the 64bit system(not fully supported with those specs)? I am frankly out of ideas rn. Cheers, Hubert

If I plug the drive in the rear ports it detects right away leading me to suspect the case's ports might be defective but I don't have another USB 2.0 card lying around to confirm.

Based on this info does it seem likely that the front ports themselves are faulty?

You might check to see if the case end of the USB cables are properly plugged into the front panel holding the headers. Some board need more than one brand of USB drivers, Renesas, NEC, etc.

Hey guys, brand new kid here. Fairly computer literate but not a whiz by any means. I had to do a Windows XP System Recovery on my HP desktop PC a few weeks ago and since then my USB 2.0 ports haven't been themselves.

Before when I used my Kingston 4gb SDHC card in my front USB 2.0 ports (as they're labeled) it worked at full speed with no problems. After the System Recovery, when I plug in the card it gives me a message saying "This device could perform faster if it were plugged into a High Speed USB 2.0 Port." The problem is, my Device Manager lists a high speed port and hub on my computer, but I get the same message on all the ports on my computer. I tried updating the drivers and uninstalling and reinstalling them but to no avail.

Is there any way to fix this?

Today i just bought some ear phones, with a connected mouth piece. Problem is that my two front ports are dodgy for the microphone and headphones. So if i put the jacks from my headset into the back, i have to take out my speaker input.. Is there any way i can have the speakers in, and the headset and revert back to each without going at the back and changing them? Any help appreciated

A:Headset not working, front ports not working

First, its possible inside your computer case, there is just a loose cable that is causing the problem with the front jacks on your computer. Check inside, right behind where the earphone jack is for a cord running to somewhere on your motherboard or Sound card.

If that dosn't work,
Do you have a CD/DVD player with a earphone jack and have you tried that?
Assuming its the port that is bad itself and not just loose, you could check in at radio shack, bestbuy, or newegg.com for a cord that splits the output. If you get lucky you might find one with a chanel select that will allow you to swap which recieves the output.
The other option, from radio shack I got a Bluetooth USB adapter for $20 and a good pair of BT earphones, again purchased online for cheap (I recommend samsung BT500 earphones).

Another alternative, my speakers have a earphone jack in them as well (the computer speakers, as well as the reciever I currently have my sound card plugged into).

If you have a quality home theater set up, for $80 on new egg you can pick up a good soundcard with optical, Coax, and AV out which you plug into your home entertainment center that again will allow you to use headphones.
Good Luck

I have a Toshiba Satellite pre-loaded with Vista. I have had this laptop for approximately 3 years.

About a year ago my SD card reader stopped working. When I say it stopped working, I mean that if I inserted a disc into the slot, the entire machine would freeze and I would have no choice but to reboot. Then I started to use the USB cable to transfer my photos to the laptop rather than using the SD disc.

Now, all 4 of the USB ports are doing the same. It freezes only when I select 'My Computer' to open up whatever I have plugged in.

The funny thing is that if I plug in my cell phone or iPod, it will charge them ... but if I try to open up the device, the laptop freezes and I have to physically hold down the Power Button to turn off the laptop.

I have run several scans and there is no virus/trojan/malware on my laptop.

I checked Device Manager and there are no yellow exclamation marks. The drivers for the ports are up to date and everything is installed properly. I have checked the BIOS settings and it is all normal.

What else can I do to make this work?

I have six USB ports. One of the ports in the back of my CPU work when I plug my dell printer in it. I plug a flash drive in the same port, the cpu recognizes it, but it does not show up in my computer. I have uninstalled and reinstalled all usb ports and that did not fix it. I tried all of my 6 usb ports with this flash drive and I get the same problem, it is recognized but I cannot see it in my computer. I cannot save to it or retrieve files. I also have an ipod shuffle and I get the same problem. My itunes will not recognize my shuffle.

Here is what is killing me...they work on my laptop, with no problems whatsoever. I tried the "Fix.reg" file I found in one of these threads and that did not work. I also repaired my windows xp because I kept receiving an error each time I would access my device manager. I hope someone has a solution for me. Thank you guys. P.S. Hi there...

So, my USB 3.0 ports are not working with my USB 3.0 ext-HDD. It's an ADATA Nobility NH13
I don't have any other USB 3.0 equipment to test, but the ext-HDD works perfectly on my laptop and on my TV as well, so it's definitely not the HDDs fault.

When I plug in USB 2 devices, they work perfectly and at maximum speeds. Even the HDD does work when connected with a USB 2.0 cable instead of it's own 3.0 cable.

This behaviour is present on front as well as the rear ports.

In the Device Manager there IS a USB3.0 driver:

Intel(r) USB 3.0 eXtensible Host Controller - 0100 (Microsoft)
Universal Serial Bus controllers
Generic USB xHCI Host Controller
PCI but 0, device 20, function 0
This device is working properly

Hardware IDs:

P.S. The specs are all up to date, so feel free to check them out.
P.P.S. In case you are that lazy, I am running Windows 8 Enterprise x64, and Gigabyte GA-Z87-HD3 motherboard

I have a desktop PC which has USB ports on the front and the back sides. I tried plugging in a flash drive (works well on other PCs) on both sides but there is no response. i checked on the device manager the properties of the USB ports and it says its working properly. i checked at the BIOS to make sure its enabled, i shut down and removed the power cord, plugged it back in and restarted the pc, uninstalled and reinstalled my USB controllers. i was still not successful. i opened the CPU and the physical connections inside and there seem to be no problem.

There is though this one suspicious Unknown Device under the Universal Serial Bus Controllers. Its properties says that there are no drivers installed for the device. I ran DriverGuide Toolkit to get more details on this device but this is the only info i could get:

Class: USB
Version: 5.1.2600.0
Date: 07/01/2001
Manufacturer: (Standard USB Host Controller)
Capabilities: 0
Class: USB
ClassGUID: {36FC9E60-C465-11CF-8056-444553540000}
CompatibleIDs: USB\UNKNOWN
ConfigFlags: 0
DeviceDesc: Unknown Device
LocationInformation: USB Device
Mfg: (Standard USB Host Controller)

I'm not sure if this device has anything to do with all the ports that are not working but if you have any idea what might be going on with my PC, I am dying to hear from you. Thanks!

i have had this problem before, and i ended up doing a full format to fix it along with a few other problems at the time, but now its doing it again!

when i try my usb stick in any of the usb ports, it just wont recognise it. it doesnt even pop up with a message or anything, nothing happens at all. when i turn my printer on it wont recognise that either, and the cable for that has never been taken out.

i have a wireless keyboard and mouse which use a single usb reciever, which still works fine. my usb wireless networking adaptor still works ok, and i also have a 3d mouse which i use for CAD which also still work ok. (non of these cables are ever removed from there ports)

i have tried a system restore back to when it was working fine, but it hasnt fixed it.
no drivers appear to be out of date.

i also run ubuntu as a dual boot, and the usb's work fine in that. so its definately just a windows problem.

i am running windows 7 64bit.

Windows 7 64bit
Motherboard: ASUS p8p67-M PRO
Just bought a fancy new USB stick with high speed USB 3.0 transfer rates. So I decide to use it in my USB 3.0 ports on my computer, I've never used these ports before because I haven't had any USB 3.0 hardware.

So I plug it in only to find that NOTHING happens - USB stick doesn't light up - no sounds in windows - no auto play and nothing in "my computer" window where my drives are. I've also seen that none of my USB hardware works in any of the USB 3.0 ports.

So I went to my motherboards website thinking that I didn't have the drivers for USB 3.0(this website: Motherboards - P8P67-M PRO ) downloaded what looked like the USB 3.0 drivers and installed them and still nothing is happening when I plug this USB stick in.

The drivers I downloaded have an icon in my start menu now so I decided to click on that to see what happens, but it presents me with an error box saying "USB 3.0 host Controller Not Found" (I believe the name for the drivers are something like "Renesas").

I have a look in my device manager and see this:

http://oi59.tinypic.com/91jhmp.jpg - I have attached an image to this post if you cannot click this link.

There is a warning triangle next to "other devices"

And there is no mention of USB 3.0 in the Universal Serial Bus Controllers section.

I ask if anyone could help me fix this problem so that I can start using the USB 3.0 ports on my computer,

Hello, so i recently installed windows 7 Ultimate x64 on my HP Pavilion g4-2235dx Notebook PC. The laptop originally came with windows 8 but i prefer windows 7 so i decided to install that. Well, not that they aren't working, they just aren't installed/functioning.

In my new computer is a Gigabyte mobo GA-MA790XT-UD4P.

I updated the bios, and just about everything including the chipset.

Yet when i plug in USBs to the usb ports on either the front of back of my case, OR the media reader I have, it says

This USB Device can perform faster if you connect it to a Hi-Speed USB 2.0 port.
For a list of available ports, click here.

When i click on it, none of them are high speed ports, yet this motherboard is good quality from what i see.

Anyway to fix this?

Also, XP Professional SP3 doesnt recognize that i have 4GB of ram, it says I only have 3.25, is this some kind of Cap?

Please forgive me in advance as I am new to the forum.

I'm no computer expert but I can get around a bit. I don't know my way around the BIOS screen though. I would say I'm an intermediate user I suppose?

I recently got some software/hardware for transferring VHS and copying DVD's. I decided to hook up my DVD player last night and in the process, I mistakenly unplugged my PC while it was still running. I've done this once before a year or so ago and had no problems.

After I turned the PC back on, I noticed that my mouse was not lighting up. I tried another mouse and it didn't work either. I then took the original mouse and hooked it up to my wife's laptop. It works just fine. I then tried the devices in my other USB ports and none of them are working. I can't even charge my iPod.

I have checked my Device Manager and everything seems to be functioning properly. I disabled and re-enabled all of the USB listings under Device Manager. Still nothing. I searched for updated drivers. All are up to date. I tried a couple of restore points and it they wouldn't function/complete correctly.

The only thing I did on my PC yesterday was update my iTunes to the latest version. I've had someone tell me that by unplugging my PC, I may have burned out my USB ports. Wouldn't that show as "device not working" under the Device Manager if that was the case? I have rebooted numerous times.

Any help would be GREATLY appreciated! Please let me know what other inf... Read more

Go back to device manager, look for little yellow warning markers. If you see any uninstall those drivers and then go to the website and update them.
If there are no yellow warning markers, uninstall the mouse driver but leave mouse plugged in, then boot. Lets see if you get an updated driver.
If you have the DVD that came with the mouse, uninstall driver and use the DVD, again.

Uninstall all the drivers for the USB ports and then boot the computer, see if that works.

Hello.  I own an older laptop, HP DV6T and recently the USB ports have stop functioning.  There is power from the ports, however the hardware does not register on my Devices with Removable storage.  I think I may have accidently unistalled the drivers.  Where can I find the software to install to make my ports work again?  Thanks to anyone who can help.

WinXP home

Asus P4S800D-E with WD external FW/USB (USB 2.0) or Easydisc 64 MB thumb drive (legacy USB). Neither Work, but do work on other systems.

System/Hardware shows all USB devices "working properly."
+5 vdc present on connectors.

All Bios USB finctions enabled.

Board connections triple checked. Everything else on boaard works.

I've emailed ASUS support. As usual I haven't heard from them.

Thanks, Bill

Try to remove them in Device Manager and restart.
Are they running at 500mA or less?
Check the disk that came with the motherboard.
There may be driver updates or some other type of update on it.
Or try http://www.asus.com.tw/support/down...ModelName=Tools for the update.

Is it the front, back, or all USB ports?

Today all 3 of my USB ports stopped working. They will still charge a peripheral, but they do not show up in "My computer" when I have a memory stick plugged in, and I cannot do a backup onto a memory stick.

I have tried switching off and on again, run a full system scan with Bitdefender and checked that all the drivers are up to date. I have also tried a variety of different Memory sticks. I run Win 10 0n a Acer E5-573.

Any other ideas?

Have you looked in Device Manager towards the bottom where the USB controllers are listed?

So I shutdown my computer and when I turned it back on again 5 out of 6 usb ports aren't working, i have a usb mouse and keyboard so I need to get at least 1 more port working. when I check in device manager it shows them all working but i have an "!" on something called PCI Simple Communications Controller, will fixing this fix my usb ports and if so where can i download the drivers for this, i dont have the original CDs or anything. If this wont fix the problem can anyone help me or point me in the right direction, I have tried almost everything I can think of.

a few things to note is that i get power to my mouse in only 1 of the usb ports but none of the others, Im running windows xp and have never had this problem before

A:5 out of 6 USB ports not working

Do you have PS2 ports on your machine? If so, borrow a keyboard and mouse with PS2connectors and make sure they work before you try this fix. If you don't have PS2 ports, Google "boot to Windows without logon screen", then set your machine up to boot to Windows without the logon screen. Test the machines booting a couple of time to make sure it boots to Windows without logon.

Next after you are sure the machine is either working with a PS2 mouse and keyboard, or is booting to Windows without a logon screen. do this.

USB drivers are in Windows. Unplug all USB devices. Go in to Device Manager, expand Universal Serial Bus Controllers, you should get a drop down menu of all USB controllers and hubs. Right click on each item individally and click on uninstall until all the controllers and hubs are uninstalled. Reboot the machine, and Windows should re-install all the USB drivers.

After Windows reinstalls all the USB drivers if USB devices still do not work, then you very likely have a motherboard problem.

Yesterday I plugged my cell phone into the computer and enabled it to use as usb. Immediately after that I noticed my usb mouse wasn't working and then realized the usb keyboard wasn't working. I tried a different mouse.....and still none of the ports on the computer would work. (They do however work on my laptop) Then I took the following steps.

1. unplugged my usb mouse (and everything else) and tried all the different ports.
2. tried both a different usb mouse as well as wireless mouse (which needed a usb to connect. Nothing was recognized
3. unplugged everything, shut the computer down. Unplugged the computer. Left it like that overnight.
4. When got up turned on the computer then tried to plug in....nothing recognized

A:USB ports not working

Hi, well we have to guess, since you didn't tell us much... did you run the MB chipset drivers after you installed windows?

Using xp sp1. Device manager says the ports are enabled and working but they definately aren't.
They were working last week. Removed some viruses from my system today. Could that be the problem?
These ports are hardwired to the motherboard however when we attached an external usb device it wasn't recognized either.
I totally confused, please help.
If you need more info let me know. I've been working at this for hours now and my head hurts.

Hi, I just joined here becuase my Dell Windows XP Computer's USB Ports at the front aren't working. The ones in the bac are working just fine. am a newb here, so I don't know what anything is called, so please don't flame.

You know how every USB Port has a little thing in it? It only has one of them? Then there's another one in the cord you plug in, only it's on the opposite side? It's inside the metal at the end of the tip of the cord. Anyways, one of those things from my computer got stuck in one of my USB Cords so there was none in the USB place on the front of the computer. I got the piece out with a knife, I think. But now when I go to put ANY USB cord in it doesn't do anything. There's 2 USB places on the front of the computer. One is perfectly normal (like there's the normal thing inside it). The other one doesn't have the little thing and I can't even fit any USB cord into it. I think that USB place is making the other one not work, because when I try to put the cord in the normal one it fits but it still doesn't recognize anything. If anyone can tell me what these things are called, and tell me what to do, that would be great.

Also if you don't understand what I mean, I can take pictures of it.

hello & welcome to TSF

what has happened is that the connectors in the female part of the usb port has broken off

now it is useless

since they work off of the same cable inside your pc the other one won't work either

what you neeed to do is order a new set up for those front ports from the manufactor of the pc or go (http://www.tigerdirect.com) and look to see if they carry that part , it may be a factory part only !!! you may have to get an exspansion kit to have external one that connect to the back to have that luxgury back

I've tried:

though the only thing under "Universal Serial Bus Controllers" is "Intel Device"?

I uninstalled on old USB monitor program. All was OK until the uninstaller asked whether I should reconfigure USB ports using (something I can't recall now). Anyhow, both the mouse and the keyboard were not responding obviously because this uninsteller somehow switched off the USB ports. So I had to force a shutdown by pushing the power button. Now - naturally - I can't log in to my original OS without mouse/keyboard. Obviously there are no physical problems with USB ports: I can log in to my PC using a linux or winpese-x64 usb stick. With those two there are no  problems with USB ports. A idea how can I get USB ports live again?

Greeting to you.
about two weeks ago.
When I plug in anything into my USB front or back the black icon with three arrows pointing to the right comes up on the task bar. I click on that and abox comes up showing USB root hub{6 ports} and showing a list of them all 'unused' exect one that states 'unknown device' AT top states "one of the USB devices attached to this computer has malfunctioned and windows does not recognise it"
this happens whatever I plug into the USB, flashdisks, external harddrives, scanner, external DVD player, etc.
Except for one , the Brother HL-2040 laser printer, that works fine.
I am running WinXP pro with service pack three
AMD athlon 3800.
Asus A8N.VM motherboard
2 gig ram.

Have tried using the Motherboard masterdisc to reinstall the USB 2.0 drivers but comes up with this message. "Please using Windows XP SP1 (Service Pack 1) or later versions, you DO NOT need to
install this driver, because they already contain software support for USB 2.0."

Also on the taskbar has appeared the icon a small grey box with green arrow above sloping down to the left. this used to only appear after I inserted a external USB device. hovering over it It states " safely remove Hardware".
when double clicking it the details that come up show it is referring to
Generic volume - [C:]
Generic volume - [E:]
I presume this is referring to my sata harddrive which I have partitioned into 2.

I am considering formatting the C: drive and... Read more

A:All USB ports not working.

With a device plugged into the USB port, go to Start/Run and type devmgmt.msc and press enter. In the Device Manager are there any devices with Yellow flags? Or under Universal Serial Bus Controllers is there an Unknown Device? If so, right click it and Uninstall it. Unplug the USB cable from the computer end.
What is the make and model # of your computer/motherboard? Go to the manufacturers support/download drivers site. type in your make and model# and download the Chipset Driver for your model.
Go to Start/Run and typed SFC /scannow and press enter. Put the XP CD in and it will replace any missing files from the CD.
When that is done plug in your USB device into the Back USB port of the computer. You should get the new hardware wizard.
