USB 3.0 Ports Not Working - Y580

Q: USB 3.0 Ports Not Working - Y580

Y580, Win10 I just purchased a used Y580 cheap because it has non-functional USB 3.0 ports. The USB 2.0 port works fine. When I plug in a USB cable, it doesn't register anything, as if there's no power to the ports. Which leads me to believe it's not a driver issue...but I could be wrong about that. My thought was that the controller on the motherboard might be bad, but I don't know much about laptops, honestly. I'm more of a desktop guy when it comes to hardware. I'm not even sure if the USB controller is onboard or a separate board in the laptop. Any ideas on how to fix this, or am I just out of luck? Thanks. - Brian

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

My front left USB 3.0 ports stopped working a few days ago.  They can still provide power via a USB to Micro USB adapter cable, but will not recognise or power my mouse or headset. My device manager indicates that my Intel(r) USB 3.0 Extensible host controller cannot start (code 10).  I've tried reinstalling this driver, but that didn't sovle the problem. My rear right USB 2.0 port functions regularly.  My front right USB 3.0 port does not work because it has been physically damaged. I'd really like to have at least 2 functional USB ports to work with.  Can anyone help me figure out what's wrong with my left ports, or how I could replace the right front port?  Thanks.

Vista Ultimate 64-bit, ASUS Rampage Formula motherboard, USB mouse and keyboard connected in back ports.

Two things happened: Avira antivirus warned me of some threats which I either ignored or deleted. Windows Update had some updates ready (although I'm not sure if it updated).

I turned off my PC for a couple of hours, turned it back on and realized that my USB keyboard was not working on the password screen.

I eventually unplugged it from the back and plugged it into the front, where it worked. However, my USB mouse did not work when plugged into the second front port, nor did it work when plugged into the front port in which the keyboard worked.

I accessed System Restore using my keyboard and restored to one day previously. When it finished, both keyboard and mouse worked, although I got a pop-up message alerting me that the "drivers for your device could not be installed." When I clicked "OK," the mouse stopped working again.

I have checked BIOS and both mouse and keyboard are recognized, so it does not appear to be a hardware issue.

From what I read online it might be just a fuse or the display itself. I was not able to locate the fuse on the motherboard, if someone can help me find the fuse would be great. At first I was thinking of ordering the display but some people changed the display and the problem was still there. Any advise would be appresiated.P.S. Greetings! I'm currently working on reinstalling win on my cousin's y580 with following specs:Intel(R) Core(TM) i3-3110M CPU @ 2.40GHz8GB RAMGEFORCE GTX 660M Everything went smoothly until the part where I want to install USB 3.0 drivers (responsible for 2x3.0 USB and 2.0 USB port). I tried everything from installing win7 drivers, uninstalling and reinstalling them with Windows Update to forcing INTEL drivers intalation. So far no luck. Browsing the forum I happened to find the topic: https://forums.lenovo.com/t5/Lenovo-P-Y-and-Z-series/USB-3-0-Ports-Not-Working-Y580/m-p/3457050#M149... , where the guy assumes that motherboard is broken cause he bought it with "broken USB ports". That is not the case, ports were working just fine on win8 until the moment win10 was introduced. In the device manager the driver shows the error 10. I also came for advice to my friend using the same notebook with better specs(i7) and they are working fine for him. So my question finally is: have anyone solved this problem for the given spec already and/or is it the case of the 64bit system(not fully supported with those specs)? I am frankly out of ideas rn. Cheers, Hubert

If I plug the drive in the rear ports it detects right away leading me to suspect the case's ports might be defective but I don't have another USB 2.0 card lying around to confirm.

Based on this info does it seem likely that the front ports themselves are faulty?

You might check to see if the case end of the USB cables are properly plugged into the front panel holding the headers. Some board need more than one brand of USB drivers, Renesas, NEC, etc.

Hey guys, brand new kid here. Fairly computer literate but not a whiz by any means. I had to do a Windows XP System Recovery on my HP desktop PC a few weeks ago and since then my USB 2.0 ports haven't been themselves.

Before when I used my Kingston 4gb SDHC card in my front USB 2.0 ports (as they're labeled) it worked at full speed with no problems. After the System Recovery, when I plug in the card it gives me a message saying "This device could perform faster if it were plugged into a High Speed USB 2.0 Port." The problem is, my Device Manager lists a high speed port and hub on my computer, but I get the same message on all the ports on my computer. I tried updating the drivers and uninstalling and reinstalling them but to no avail.

Is there any way to fix this?

Hey
Today i just bought some ear phones, with a connected mouth piece. Problem is that my two front ports are dodgy for the microphone and headphones. So if i put the jacks from my headset into the back, i have to take out my speaker input.. Is there any way i can have the speakers in, and the headset and revert back to each without going at the back and changing them? Any help appreciated
Thanks

A:Headset not working, front ports not working

First, its possible inside your computer case, there is just a loose cable that is causing the problem with the front jacks on your computer. Check inside, right behind where the earphone jack is for a cord running to somewhere on your motherboard or Sound card.

If that dosn't work,
Do you have a CD/DVD player with a earphone jack and have you tried that?
Assuming its the port that is bad itself and not just loose, you could check in at radio shack, bestbuy, or newegg.com for a cord that splits the output. If you get lucky you might find one with a chanel select that will allow you to swap which recieves the output.
The other option, from radio shack I got a Bluetooth USB adapter for $20 and a good pair of BT earphones, again purchased online for cheap (I recommend samsung BT500 earphones).

Another alternative, my speakers have a earphone jack in them as well (the computer speakers, as well as the reciever I currently have my sound card plugged into).

If you have a quality home theater set up, for $80 on new egg you can pick up a good soundcard with optical, Coax, and AV out which you plug into your home entertainment center that again will allow you to use headphones.
Good Luck

Or under Universal Serial Bus Controllers is there an Unknown Device? If so, right click it and Uninstall it. Unplug the USB cable from the computer end.
What is the make and model # of your computer/motherboard? Go to the manufacturers support/download drivers site. type in your make and model# and download the Chipset Driver for your model.
Go to Start/Run and typed SFC /scannow and press enter. Put the XP CD in and it will replace any missing files from the CD.
When that is done plug in your USB device into the Back USB port of the computer. You should get the new hardware wizard.

Hello! I have a bit of a problem. I have an Acer Aspire 5733Z-4633 and upon receiving it, I reinstalled Windows 7 to get rid of all the bloatware and useless things that were taking up space on the hard drive. Upon doing this, two out of three of my USB ports stopped working for some reason. When I look at Device Manager, it says everything is up to date:
I didn't really care about this, considering I had the one that did work. By a stroke of horrible luck though, that USB stopped working too (completely a hardware problem though, no software involved with that breaking. I plugged something in and it literally ripped something out of the USB after I took the plug out). Now, I have these two USB ports that really should work, but they don't. I am almost certain that they worked fine before I reinstalled windows, so that rules out a problem with the hardware. But everything that I've read suggests that its a hardware problem, so I'm a bit confused with what could be going on.

A:Two USB ports not working

Almost a coincidence that my previous laptop was an Aspire 5735Z. Unfortunately I never encountered this issue when I did a clean install of Windows 7.
My first thoughts are wondering if you have installed all the drivers for your laptop? Windows Update does not always find up to date drivers concerning your model of laptop.
For the drivers, click here and enter your model.
The most important drivers are the ones in the category AHCI, AMT and Chipset.
Install the drivers, restart your PC and tells us what happens.

So, I shut down my computer last night, it's a Toshiba Satellite a215-s5837, got up, went to work, came back, turned my computer on.. or at least tried. Apparently the damn thing had not shut off after closing the lid, and since It was not plugged into the wall the battery died. When I plugged it back in and it charged for a bit I turned it on, and suddenly the two remaining USB ports are not working. Two of them were not working prior to this new issue.

So, I disabled and re-enabled legacy usb support in BIOS, updated BIOS, Disabled and reenabled all the usb hubs all items inside the device manager under the Universal Serial Bus section. Uninstalled and reinstalled all the drivers, checked system services to make sure that nothing was wrong in there, restarted the system, tried other usb items such as a flash card and webcam, none of them work.

However, all the items light up, as they are indeed receiving power from the usb ports that were working prior.

Hi. .

USB is Plug-N-Play meaning that Vista will find the drivers for you automatically, unless you have installed software for that specific USB device.

Perform a system Restore using a restore point prior to the loss of the USB.

Then check these areas:

? The Device Manager
START | type dev man into the Start Search box | right-click on Deice Manager that appears up top | select Run as Administrator | look for any red/yellow flags - pay specific attention to the USB area.

? Problem Reports and Solutions -
START | type wercon.exe into the Start Search box | right-click on wercon.exe that appears up top | select Run as Administrator | view "See Problems to Check".

? The Event Viewer -
START | type eventvwr into the Start Search box | right-click on eventvwr.exe that appears up top | select Run as Administrator | view the various logs starting with the Administrative logs.

? Reliability and Performance Moniter -
START | type perfmon into the Start Search box | right-click on perfmon that appears up top | select Run as Administrator | view both the Performance Moniter and the Reliability Moniter.

I'm having a very weird problem with my computer. I think it's driver related, but i don't know.

The problem is that my usb ports aren't working for some devices. I have 4-5 free usb ports that just don't work. And they apparently died one by one, don't know what.

So basically, i put my mouse in port 1 and in the day after, port 1 stopped working. Changed it to port 2, same thing, the next morning swapped to port 3.

What's weird is that it applies only to the mouse and my playstation controller charger, if i connect a pendrive there it works, and my tiamat headset connects just fine (i'm not sure if the USB is just for power).

I have tried updating the intel inf thingy, and searched for a renesas usb controller driver, but i couldn't find it for windows 10 and found on several websites that it already comes included with windows 10. So what do i do? Right now i'm running sfc /scannow to see if it works, but i'm just not sure anymore.

Do i re-install rapid storage from intel? The usb 3.0 as well as the 2.0 don't work. It's not specific.

I have also tried disabling the power settings that controls usb suspend, but that also did not work. Any ideas?

edit: oh, and here's what i see on device manager

I fried my CPU and after installing a new one none of the ports on the back of my box work. The USB ports do not work nor do the PS2 ports and it also appears that none of the expansion slots on the mobo work either. Fortunately the USB ports on the front of the box still function.

I tried deleting the USB drivers and reloading them. I tried reloading the motherboard drivers.

My board is a Biostar TA790GX XE.

I also have a couple of further questions.

1) I know that you usually cannot switch out a motherboard and use the same hard drive unless you through a process to make it all work. Is this still necessary if you install an identical motherboard? Can you put everything back on an identical motherboard and fire it right up?

2) Can somebody direct me to a good guide to doing back ups?

Thanks!!!

A:ports not working after new CPU

1) If you use an identical motherboard and nothing else was damaged then yes it will work.

2) I would make an Image rather than a backup, this is a very good free Imaging program :- http://www.macrium.com/reflectfree.aspx

I am working on a friends laptop, a Dell Inspiron 9200 running Windows XP Pro with SP3. I have it working well now except the USB ports do not work.

The laptop was in pretty bad shape when I started. I remove Norton Antivirus (subscription expired 3 years ago), removed a few trojans and viruses using Malwarebytes and Combofix, and installed AVG Free. I also cleaned up the temp files, compacted the registry using NTRegOpt, and defragmented the drive.

I have tried uninstalling the USB controllers and let Windows reinstall them, verified working status in Device manager, and disabled USB device power management. I also plugged in a USB mouse and verified the ports are supplying power.

I should add that the USB ports did not work before any of the above, but I know they worked two years ago. Ideas?

I have Windows XP and having been using this laptop for well over a year now but suddenly as soon as I plugged in my iPod the other day, (Which I have done many times before without a problem) I get a message at the bottom of the screen telling me there's a power surge in my hub port. I also noticed that my iPod wasn't being recognized. So I unplugged my iPod, afraid that it would fry it or something and haven't used the laptop for a few days now.
Well, now I've decided to move all my files to a new computer seeming as how this one looks like it's going to have problems but the thing is, my USB ports won't recognize anything anymore! I need to be able to plug in my flashdrive one last time to transfer all my files but my computer won't recognize it. It's like the drivers are shot. I have no idea what to do, I really want to be able to transfer all these files before I ditch the computer. Help?

The following items are not recognized when plugged into any USB port:
Camera card reader, digital photo frame, external hard drive (for back-up).
PC using Windows XP. Do not know brand of PC or manufacturer of mother board. Any suggestions ??

A:USB ports not working

More than likely, it's not that the ports aren't working, it's probably because Windows does not come with the drivers for those peripherals. You will need to download the drivers from the manufacturer of the products.

What is the exact error you get when you plug them in? Nothing at all? Not recognized? Cannot locate drivers?

Sheesh, since I put together this new PC, I sure have been to this site a lot.
Anyways, I put my jumpdrive into my PC, but it wouldn't pick it up. I tried both ports, but nothing. I checked the mobo disk, and one of the options is for USB, but when I clicked on it, it said I need the SP1 because the drivers are included. I checked the disk in Explorer and clicked the USB icon and it said I already had the USB drivers from SP1.

A:My USB ports don't seem to be working

You mentioned SP1 but not which OS. I assume XP. Get SP2 and try again. If running 2000, get SP4.

Also, be sure all USB is turned on in the BIOS.

I have 4 USB ports total on my laptop. 2 on the right and 2 on the left. The 2 on the left work fine, and the 2 on the right used to work fine and now they don't work at all. No matter what device I plug into the 2 USB ports on the right, I get: "USB Device Not Recognized" I can put the Installation Disc in and run it from that as well and it still can't recognize the USB Device. (Even when using things that are ALREADY installed on my computer and they work just fine when plugged into the left USB ports. In my device manager, under my USB folder, there are no yellow flags or issues. No matter what the device, when I plug it in, I get a new folder made in my Device Manager called "Other Devices" and that has a yellow flag and under that there is a yellow flag and an exclamation mark next to "USB Device". How can I fix the USB ports on the right side? What's the problem?  Angie

A:2 USB ports not working.

Update: I did get the 2 non working USB ports 2 finally start working. I unplugged my computer from the outlet and took out the battery and put it back in after 30 mins and booted it up and they worked. However... I still cannot get my Logitech wireless keyboard/mouse combo to install. I know it isn't the device itself because I plugged it into another computer and it installed right away and worked fine. Everytime i plug it in, nothing happens. I open up Device Manager and see it is under "unknown device" - "usb receiver" with a yellow flag and an exclamation mark next to it. i click properties, it says: The driver for this device is not installed. (code 28) To reinstall the driver for this device, click reinstall driver. So I do, and it pulls up the hardware wizard and it always comes back saying it cannot locate the necessary software. It does this with the software disc in my computer or with it not in. It should install without the disc, but even with the dis and even with me downloading updated software it keeps always saying it cannot locate the software. Help???  What do i need to do to fix this? Angie

So I have 3 USB ports. My mouse occupies one of them. I'll use another one to charge my phone. One USB port is vacant, but I couldnt use it if I wanted to because it has completely stopped working, I think this is a fixable issue however.

So I have the two working USB ports. But if I have my mouse and phone charger both plugged in, one port will usually stop working, or both will decide not to work. Therefore I have to only utilize one usb port at a time.

This was a n issue that started happening every now and then, and now is happening all the time. It must be something in my settings, right? What is the fix here? Drivers are up to date according to my system.

Oh dear, what have I done now?! I have a 6(ish) year old laptop running Windows XP pro. I've always used a hub to add USB ports, and have never had a problem until now. I think it was the phone that did it. I just got a new phone, and it has a USB charger (which plugs into a wall unit) but I assumed that also meant it could charge via computer (after all, my iPod does.) It seemed okay, though I kept getting little connect and disconnect sounds as if I were plugging and unplugging devices. It wasn't until I unplugged the phone that I noticed my keyboard wasn't working. Investigating, I found that my 7-port hub had no lights on but the little red power light. I plugged the keyboard directly into the computer and it works. Okay, I thought. I fried my hub. Dang. So I ran into the next room and retrieved my spare that I don't like so much because of the really bright blue light. Plugged it in. Same thing that happens with the other hub--I got a pop up window saying "USB Device Not Recognized-One of the USB devices attached to this computer has malfunctioned, and Windows does not recognize it. For assistance...click this message." I click the message and get a box with a list of ports that starts with "USB Root Hub 6 ports" and below that is a list of ports each with a USB symbol in line. The first is bold, and just says "Unknown Device" and all the others say "unused Port".

I have no idea what to do with this informatio... Read more

My Laptop is refusing to recognise devices plugged into the USB ports, although it has done so in the past.My Kindle and Flash Drive, both listed under Other Devices on the Device Manager, both have the yellow troubleshooting triangles alongside them and are insisting that their are no installed, if they were ever needed, drivers again even though they must obviously must have been for them to work just this morning.(The PC obviously knows the devices are attached but is refusing to work with them)When I try to Update the Drivers the PC insists that they do not exist. And yes I have tried running a System Restore, 3 times, to no effect. It cannot be the Removable Disk or the Kindle since the work when plugged into my ancient Desk Top PC.And for some reason my Wireless Mouse, which operates out of a USB plug in, and yes I have tried the one to which it is normally attached, still works ... so the failure to recognise other devices is particularly puzzling?

Have a desktop, Acer Aspire model M5640 and running windows 7. Power supplied is 300 watts. Upon boot, got a black screen message saying "warning, keyboard not found." In addition a BSOD message indicated that the "usb drivers were not found."

Prior to these messages, the computer was fine except the 5 usb ports(4 in rear, 1 in front) sometimes worked and other times not. When they didn't work, I would restart the computer. If that didn't work, I would go into the device manager and check to see any yellow highlighted ? next to a driver, etc. If I didn't find any, I would shut down computer then unplug power source and open the case. I would check if anything looked peculiar such as a loose usb hub or connector, then look inside the usb ports if any of the pins looked loose or mis-aligned. What I found was the following:

1. One usb port behind the computer had two pins that were shorter than the other two. Because of this, my theory was that there wasn't a good connection between the usb cable for the keyboard and that usb port. For the usb port in the front of the computer, the same problem was visible like the rear usb port but this port was for the usb cable for the mouse.

2. What I did for both usb ports was use a fine twizzer tool to pull the pins forward and after doing so, those pins were aligned with the other two pins that weren't mis-aligned. My other curiosity was why the other three usb ports behind the computer were... Read more

OK, I connected my digital camera as usual through the usb port and it is not reading my camera at all. Usually it pops up on the screen as soon as it's connected and now it's not working. I got down and actually looked into the port and found that some of the connecting little gold rods are bent out of place. I have 2 other usb ports on my computer however, & they are not working either. Could the problem with the one port be effecting all of the usb ports on my computer? I really need to fix this problem and any information on how to go about it would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance for any help received.
