Multi PC Dilemma

Q: Multi PC Dilemma

Hi all,

I've been using Windows 7 since the release of the beta (now using RC) on my old Pentium 4 desktop - it runs a treat!

Then, a couple of weeks ago, I made use of a great offer from Dell (no doubt discounting PCs pre-Win 7 launch) and bought a laptop. The laptop is pre-installed with Vista 64 and so I've ordered the Windows 7 upgrade.

Ok, so the dilemma is, the licence on the RC version expires in May (I think) so what do I do at that point? Am I right in saying the Win 7 upgrade won't work on my desktop as it's 64-bit? Is there any way around this? Or do I have to bite the bullet and buy a 32-bit edition of Win 7 for my desktop?

Please advise,

Kev

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

A clean install would have no problems.
But why wouldnt the 64bit upgrade to a 64bit?

Hello everybody,

I'm reletively new on this forum and I've spent a lot of time reading posts here concerning innovative installation methods and various approaches to partitioning. This forum really has some great info and users!

I'm an old school guy going back to the days before PCs even existed. Electronics has always circulated in my bloodstream. I'm an old dog but open to new tricks.

I decided to overhaul my primary workhorse computer (See this thread for full description) by adding an SSD and rearranging my drivespace, as one of my drives was failing. I had an 80GB Vertex2 SSD scavanged from another system and thus I hatched my new partition scheme to use it.

Long story short is that after multiple trials I came to the conclusion the SSD was causing me much trouble, probably failing due to it's age. 80GB was a mighty tight fit anyway to boot 3 operating systems. So today I ordered a new SSD, a low cost 120GB Sandisk Plus from Amazon, paying less than $40 including shipping by using a discount coupon I had.

At this point I'm asking myself whether I should scrap all of the MBR partitioned disks and use only GPT disks. In reading this thread I see it's now possible to boot Windows installed on GPT using a non UEFI, legacy BIOS, which is good b/c that's all my mobo supports. That thread also requires at least a minimal MBR image, be it on a floppy VHD or other virtual image, or via some other clever "trick" to allow either winload.exe or bootmgr to live in... Read more

A:Pros / Cons of Multi-boot, Multi-Disk Partition Scheme With SSD

To the best of my knowledge MBR will work just find for drives smaller than 2 TB.
Drives bigger than that need to be GPT.

A little info from Microsoft.

https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/2581408

Quote:
In order for an operating system to fully support storage devices that have capacities that exceed 2 terabytes (2 TB, or 2 trillion bytes), the device must be initialized by using the GUID partition table (GPT) partitioning scheme. This scheme supports addressing of the full range of storage capacity. If the user intends to start the computer from one of these large disks, the system’s base firmware interface must use the Unified Extensible Firmware Interface (UEFI) and not BIOS.

The monitors I have are as follows:

Whenever one of these monitors are set as primary, all desktop applications displayed on the secondary monitor (doesn't matter which) has blurry text. Exceptions are the Windows Store Apps like Windows Store and Microsoft Edge, along with the Taskbar/Start Menu, the Taskbar/Start Menu settings screen, the Taskbar context menu, and the desktop context menu which passes the DPI test with flying colours, with crispy text on both monitors (occasionally a DPI switch bug gets in, but I can mostly ignore that). The problem is, as you can probably guess, is that >99% of the applications I use aren't Windows Store Apps.

Here are some screenshots. The "Taskbar and Start Menu Properties" text is what the text should look like while the Visual Studio 2015 text is an example of the text most desktop apps get. The blurry image is what happens when the UHD monitor is not the primary monitor.

I have a table that lists every MLS system, the state and coverage area. There are multiple entries for each county

I am trying to convert this to a table that has one entry per county and includes all the MLS that are active in that county.

I have attached a sample set of data to display the current and desired table structure.

Is there a way to do this in excel via a formula/s?

I have attempted multiple combinations of index and match but I can't seem to figure it out. I need to match on the state and then look to see if the county is in the range of County 1 to County 3. If it does exist I need to display the name of the MLS system.

Any guidance would be much appreciated.

Recently I reinstalled the OS on my computer. It was shipped with Windows XP HE SP2, but I formatted and put Win98 onto the system. Needless to say, it froze up at the Windows splash screen. So, I uninstalled it and put XP back on. My question here is, is there any possible way to put Windows 3.1, Windows 95, Windows 98, and Windows XP all on one hard drive, and it work? I know how to partition the hard drive accordingly for the deed, it's getting the computer to actually run 95, 98, and 3.1. I'm cheating fate here, since I know 3.1 probably won't run on my 32-bit structure system, but it's worth a try.

My system is a Dell Dimension 4700 with 3.0 gHz CPU, 256 mb of RAM, and an nVidia 64 mb video card. Any help is greatly appreciated.

A:Multi Partition Boot/Multi OS install

The XP boot loader will let you boot XP and one DOS-based Windows version (Win 9x or Win3.1). However, you can't run multiple versions of Win9x and Win3.1 on the same system -- unless there is potentially some 3rd-party boot loader that can do this, but I can't recommend one.

OK. My computer multi-boots to Windows 7 & 8 right now. 8 is on an SSD.

I am thinking about adding another HDD, moving 8 to the new HDD, and installing Windows 10 [Technical Preview] onto the SSD. If I disconnect the drives with 7 & 8 during the install, then add them to the boot menu after, can I make the computer boot to the HDD with 8, have that boot menu default to 8, with 7 & 10 as options, and if I make the computer boot off the SSD default to 10 with 7 & 8 as options?

A:Multi-Boot & Multi-Harddrive booting

Clone or image Windows 8 to a partition you create on the HD, boot into it or Windows 7 to add the other OS to a Dual Boot menu using EasyBCD (click Download - no Name or Email required).

Unplug the 7/8 hard drive, plug in the SSD to Clean Install Windows 10 Technical Preview.

After install plug back in the hard drive, boot it when needed using the one-time BIOS boot menu key, leaving the SSD as drive set first to boot in BIOS setup.

If this is not to your liking, then boot into the hard drive OS from which you set up the Dual Boot with EasyBCD, add Windows 10 to the Dual Boot menu using type Windows 8.1. You'll now have a Multi-Boot menu for all OS's, but the drives will still remain independently bootable, whereas if you'd installed TP to SSD with the hard drive plugged in, it will configure a Dual Boot which makes the SSD's boot entirely dependent upon the HD.

I've recently purchased a second 500GB disk for my rig already containing a 250GB disk.
I've read quite a bit about partitioning strategies and I've still got a few questions that I couldn't seem to find subjective answers for.
First off, I'm looking at have a multi boot system with at least 3 OS.
1 primary XP install
1 secondary XP install with only my CAD programs
1 vista install
then I'm also looking Linux/Ubuntu. one of my concerns in if I put a small partition at the beginning of the first disk then my 4th partition for OS ends up being a extended logical partition, no? I read somewhere that O/S can only start from Primary partition, But I also read at http://partition.radified.com/ that he's put O/S on Extended logical drives)

here's how I propose to setup my disks:

DISK 1 - 25OGB TOTAL (ACUTAL ~230GB)
P1 - 5 GB - FAT32 - for DOS based utilities/programs
P2 - 40 GB - NTFS - Primary XP w/most programs
P3 - 25 GB - NTFS - Secondary XP w/ only CAD programs
P4 - 30 GB - NTFS - Vista
E1 - 15 GB - FAT32? - Linux/Ubuntu
E2 - 5 GB - FAT32? - Linux swap.
E3 - 50 GB - NTFS - MULTI CD/DVD PROGRAMS
E4 - 50 GB - NTFS - RESERVE
E5 - 10 GB - BACK-UP IMAGES

DISK 2 - 500GB TOTAL (ACTUAL ~470GB)
P1 - 5 GB - NTFS - PAGEFILE
P2 - 30 GB - NTFS - BACK-UP O/S
P3 - 20 GB - FAT32 - RESERVE
E1 - 400 GB - NTFS - DATAT(MY DOCUMENTS FOLDER)
E2 - 15 GB - NTFS BACK-UP IMAGES

let me know what you guys think.

A:Multi hard disks, multi o/s partitioning

The Windows OS has issues starting from anything other than the C:\ drive, so you may have to load the OS in separate directories on that partition and utilize a boot menu to select which configuration you desire at boot.

As for Linux, I am not aware of any such limitations, but YMMV. Good Luck.

I have a 9800 GX2 card and always want to run two monitors. In the Nvidia Control Panel set-up under 3D settings and sub heading "Set Multi-GPU Config" I have the recommended option of Multi-GPU Mode, but if I select that, the second monitor stays blank. I assume because my card has two GPU's internally SLI connected and you (to date) can't run two monitors when SLI invoked?

Assuming that is correct

1. Is Nvidia working to overcome this major hurdle of SLI and 2 Monitors?
2. If I use Triple Head to Go, will this allow me to select Multi-GPU and still have two monitors and will I have better performance?

Kotuku

A:Multi GPU Mode Versus Multi Display

When you use SLI, the secondary GPU shuts the output off, so you can't connect a monitor to the second GPU. It's always been like this with Nvidia SLI. I'm quite sure if you use an external multi-monitor device, you could set multiple monitors up while still haveing SLI enabled.

Greetings, I was anticipating this to be a headache, since it only worked in Win7 by throwing spaghetti at a wall.

Essentially, I have a dual monitor display. The right monitor is primary, the left is to be used by art programs, movies, games, and other more specialized work (as well as workspace in a large project and running code next to blah blah).

So, my problem is getting the movies and 3d apps (especially games) to render on the left monitor, but keep all of the main functions on the right one, as it is now.

...

A side problem... I don't totally dislike the Start Screen; I think it can be useful putting it up on that left monitor when not in use as a live feed reader when not running a program there, while leaving the right monitor "classic". Any way that is possible?

Thanks in advance.

I couldn't find any info on Microsoft's web site regarding multiple licensing at all. Thanks in advance.

Hi, everybody. Please excuse my lack of knowledge on the subject I am asking about. As far as I know, you are not able to set up WPA encryption on your laptop in a wifi hotspot(unless of course the owner tells you the router's MAC address and passphrase). However, I was wondering what exactly the WPA does. I read that it supposedly encrypts all the so-called "data" that you send out(specifically for web browsing, downloading, etc.), and makes anyone trying to connect to your computer(and therefore your network) need to input the correct passphrase. If this is the case, isn't there some sort of software that could also encrypt your outbound data in the same way on a hotspot, but without actually setting up an encrypted network between your computer and a router(or access point)? I am guessing that if there is, then it would probably only encrypt outbound "data", and not protect you from people trying to access your computer. I have read about VPNs, TOR, etc., but as far as I can understand, these only try to mask your IP/identity. They also say that they "tunnel data," but doesn't all web traffic have to make "hops" anyway? So how would they "tunnel data," unless that company had a physical line running straight from your computer to their server? I welcome any number of responses on this subject, and I would appreciate any help anyone can offer. Thank you very much!

I have tried writing registry values as found in various forums, deleting other values, changing the binary code to 1 in D-Word entries to make sure that the toolbar menu is active...tried Alt, Alt+Spacebar, Alt+T, or any other combination of keys, and none of them work. I tried utilizing Kelly's Korner toolbar fix exe. and this did not work.

Right-clicking ANYWHERE on the top bar, only gives me the pop-up box which has 'restore', 'maximize', 'minimize', or 'close' as options to choose from.

Hello Everybody
An old XP PC we were using as a Minecraft server was having a printer driver installed when Windows unexpectedly rebooted. Since then it has been stuck in a boot loop. We get as far as the Windows startup screen then it reboots. In safe mode it hangs at the Mup.sys stage.
We have a Windows XP disc which we always used to use to get back to factory settings and I'm pretty sure we used it on this one when we acquired it but it tries ( I think!) to boot from CD but ends up booting from HD. It would not boot into Puppy Linux from CD so I did a Puppy boot from memory stick.
This worked up to editting the registry as described above but Windows is still stuck in the reboot loop.
I should say that I did ntfxfix on Windows partition 1 in Puppy as advised here: http://www.winhelp.us/recover-files-using-puppy-linux-page-2.html. On first reboot it did do chkdsk before the rebooting loop started again.
What else could I try?
thanks

Basically they are exactly the same RAM modules, except the CL7's are 'better binned' (higher individual quality) than their CL9 counterparts. Modules that can't tolerate tighter timings / voltages are sold as the 'slower' sets.

Am I right, therefore, in presuming that if I took a UK cable and used that with the PSU it would not blow up my house and/or my newly built rig ?!

Help appreciated !

A:EU / UK PSU dilemma

I assume and remember knowing that UK wall sockets give 230 V AC power? Therefore yes, it will work with a UK cable and will not break anything. Or then get an adapter instead of a new cable.

Guys, just days ago I purchased all the components needed to make a gaming rig.Well, most of the components[except my PSU] have been delivered. As I was talking to the guy who is going to assemble my CPU,he gave me a suggestion to use my old HDD with the new one,as it would give me and my family more space to put in new stuff in the new HDD.Well,I liked the idea and told him we would go through with it,but then, many questions popped in my mind as soon as I had finished my conversation with him.Well, first let me give you the specs:-
1)OLD HDD:-Western Digital Caviar Green-WD10EZRX-00D8PB0[ASIN number,I guess] and here is the link http://www.amazon.in/WD-Caviar-Desktop-Internal-WD10EZRX/dp/B00769WETS. Reason,I provided you guys the ASIN number is because when I saw the price of this HDD now,it is 12K bucks....I don't believe I paid that much amount in 2011-12,so check the ASIN number that i got in my devices list in the control panel.
NEW HDD:-Toshiba 1 TB 7200 RPM HDD.Link:-http://www.amazon.in/Toshiba-Internal-Hard-Drive-DT01ACA100/dp/B00A0KXK7U?_encoding=UTF8&keywords=1tb%20hdd%20toshiba&linkCode=sl1&linkId=b476891eb75940ea155299da093c4c89&qid=1481107684&ref_=as_li_ss_tl&ref_=sr_1_3&sr=8-3&tag=curse0d-21.
Now,here are my queries:-
1)I am intending to install win 10 pro 64 bit version[in my new HDD],will it somehow clash with the win7 OS in my harddisk.
2)I just do not have applications installed in the C drive, but also in other drives.Eve... Read more

A:Dilemma of using old HDD in new rig..

3)As the drive is like 3-4 years old[already reached its expectancy],would it be wise to have all the data stored in it?Click to expand...

Any data you want to keep, you make backups. If this is the ONLY copy of said data, you should expect to lose it at some point. ALL drives fail; it is only a question of when the drive failes.
4)As the old HDD is of Western Digital caviar series and the new one is of Toshiba, will they clash with each other?Click to expand...

No.
Here is what I would do;
1 First and foremost, make at least two copies of whatever data you want to keep. Do this on separate media; ie two external drives, two flash drives, NAS, whatever.
2 Build the system and install just your new drive. Do the windows install, updates, drivers, etc, etc.
3 Once completely finished with the windows install, shutdown and install the old drive. Windows will assign the next available drive letter to your old drive ie E, F, whatever.
4 As for access to your old disk, you can edit permissions to make it unavailable to some users.

Your link to your drive on amazon does not work.

Kaspersky Internet Security 2012 successfully blocked a malicious URL.
My concern is that within seconds IE9 crashed. Within 2 minutes I attempted a scan with Kaspersky and the scan was almost frozen. Scan was very, very slow. I aborted the scan.

A subsequent scan about 10 minutes later with Kasperksy and Malwarebytes was negative.

Any further steps to take to insure my system was not infected ? Seems to be normal since incident. I just felt the IE9 crash and slow scan were significant. Thanks !

i recently purchased a western digital my brook pro 500gb external hdd, and i wanted to back this up with another external hard drive just in case anything happens to the original, so

the my book pro hdd has Triple interface — FireWire 800, FireWire 400, and USB 2.0
the company i purchased it off has discontinued it, so ill need to get a different model
I need the extra one just to mirror the contents, on lets say a weekly basis , and be able to update both regularly with the same contents at the same time. i was looking at a Western Digital 500GB MyBook Essential unit , not the same but similar and only has a USB 2.0 interface, will this suffice and is there any guidelines and tips on easy mirroring and regular updates,, this is certainly not my strongest point, and with valuable data i don't want to get it wrong. thanks for any help in advance guys

A few weeks ago my son & I asked for assistance with removing the free McAfee that came with his new Vista laptop.

http://forums.techguy.org/general-security/678529-solved-easy-removal.html

The assistance received was right on the money, right down to the "successful removal" after completion of the extra step needed.

The free version of AVG had been previously downloaded and was installed. It was updated and a scan was run that came up clean.

Today, upon starting the computer a message came up that stated that MFC71.DLL failed to start and that AVG was not running. Windows suggested that the problem might be solved by reinstalling the program.

My son downloaded a fresh copy of AVG, to the desktop, and uninstalled the one had on the computer.

When he tried to install the new AVG he got a message that another anti-virus was already running and that he needed to un-install it, first. That's when he called me.

Not being the smartest guy on the block, I told him that, maybe, the MFC71.DLL was involved with McAfee, not AVG. Sure enough, he looked in the security section of his computer and under "Malware" it stated that McAfee Virus scan and Windows Defender were both running. After shutting off Defender that section still said it was running.

We're a bit far apart. He's in Seattle and I'm in St. Pete, FL area. I'm stumped, but that doesn't take too much.

Where do we start? I appreciate any help you can send.

Hi,

I originally used the sysprep method (from eightforums) to move my user profile to a different drive (E: drive) in win 8.1. My dilemma is do I move my user profile back to the C: drive (win drive) before upgrading to win 10 ? or just upgrade as it would seem this is possible if I have understood correctly.
Can any one tell me the pros and cons of both methods to help me to decide what to do please?
Thanks.

A:Win 10 upgrade dilemma

I can't think of any benefits in relocating it back unless you wanted to do it anyway irrespective of the upgrade. If you want your user folders to remain on the E drive, to move them back, upgrade, then relocate them back again is a lot of effort for no gain (and there is always the risk of making a typo and having to repeat steps).

If you look at this thread Users Folder - Move Location in Windows 10 - Page 8 - Windows 10 Forums there are plenty of people that upgraded without relocating back first. (There are a lot of comments to trawl through but no-one had a problem, including me).

Similarly once on 10 you don't need to relocate back before doing an in-place upgrade or upgrading the release build.

You would have to relocate ProgramData directory back if you had moved it though - but that was only possible on Windows 7 and earlier anyway as far as I remember.

( I only have 512mb sticks and I don't feel like spending the money to buy 2 1gb sticks )

A:Memory Dilemma

I'd think the 1.5GB would be better but the difference will likely be minimal either way. If you want to know for sure do some benchmarks with programs like PCMark and 3DMark and see what scores better.

So I'm having a bit of an Adobe Dilemma and looking for any advice or help related to the issue.

You see, years ago I purchased Adobe Acrobat on disc from my college. This was before all the licensing fees from Adobe started. I never had an issue using their software as the license had been purchased upon purchasing the disc. Again, this was at the time.

The problem arose when I purchased a new computer. While trying to transfer my program to my new computer it is telling me that I have to once again purchase the licensing for it. This would be via the once a year payment or the monthly payment for it. Is there anyway around this? Since the license I purchased was before all of this does anyone know of a grandfather clause that would allow me to continue using the software license I had already purchased or I am cornered into paying them regardless of when my actual purchase was made?

Thanks for any help ahead of time.

Ok heres my dilemma...

I was tinkering around with Vista last night ( was drunk and bored ) And then I went to bed and don't know what the heck I did to my laptop.

Right now ALL of my dang programs are set to open in wordpad by default...I have no clue on how to fix this

Seriously this is a major issue for me

My iTunes opens up in wordpad and all i see is jibberish, same thing goes for when I want to do a system restore, play ANY of my games, open any freaking program...All i get is my programs being displayed in computer jargon in wordpad

Please I hope someone can help me out soon because I really wanted to play Counter Strike Source soon =)

A:Wordpad Dilemma

Hi -

It sounds like you found an escape from the boredom!

Run a Vista system restore - choose a restore point prior to the mishap yesterday -
START | rstrui - select restore point

If you can't run the rstrui.exe file, boot into SAFEMODE and select "Safemode with Command Prompt" and execute rstrui.exe there.

People,

How in the heck does one find the doggone servers available for various Newsgroups in Outlook Express, so that they can be added into the News (NNTP) server window in the internet connection wizard...to then check out the newsgroups available (on that server)?

Or...am I going about this the wrong way? I am assuming I use the *Internet Accounts* dialog, as opposed to the *Newsgroup Subscriptions* dialog...'cause I've never been able to figure out how to search for newsgroup servers in the latter.

There are quite a few useful newsgroups from Usenet, for example...which I'd like to post to conveniently from my e-mail utility (Outlook Express)...(as opposed to Google, on the web.

Need some help on this...

Thanks,

A:OE (6) Newsgroup Dilemma

Hi mark4man

Your ISP most likely has some newsgroups servers you can access.
Also try a search on Google for Newsgroups.

Microsoft has some servers for Microsoft products:
news.microsoft.com
or
msnews.microsoft.com

Some newsgroups require subscriptions or a logon (like your ISP's servers will) or some, like Microsoft's do not.

Hi, Firstly, I'm so glad I've found this site and I really hope you can help me within the day.

I had a problem with Hotmail last night. I am on wanadoo broadband on a Packcard Bell computer. I was typing a lengthy and very important email last night. When I finished I ticked the box at the bottom so that it would be sent to my "send" folder. I then went up to the top of the page and clicked "send" but before I got a confirmation of my letter having been sent, I got the Packard Bell cannot find server page. Has my email been lost? When I pressed back in my hotmail account the email I had spent hours over had gone! It hasn't been sent to "sent messages" and it is not in the "trash can" either. It's just disappeared. I even checked the "history" pages to see if I could retrieve it from there. It's probably a lesson learnt the hard way - always save to drafts before sending!

But my real problem is that it was such an important and personal email that I want to know if the person I was writing to received it even though the confirmation message didn't come through to say that it had been sent and it's not in my "sent" messages folder.

It's not a problem rewriting it and sending a new one but I don't want to look foolish by sending a paraphrased version of the one that seems not to have worked, otherwise my email will not mean as much. Please help me solve this - do you thi... Read more

I am getting a new PC. The 64 bit OEM version of Home Premium is only $10 more, and I will have the hardware to run it.
However, there are many that warn against the 64 bit version, and the last thing I would want is to find out that some hardware does not work, or that there are problems with our home network. I am also worried about not being able to run 16 bit programs and bits and pieces without proper signatures. Apparently the 64 bit version rejects these.

The best alternative would be to buy the 64 bit version, but install and run it as 32 bit untill such time when I progressively replace hardware, the other PC's etc.

Is this possible? I have heard that it can be run as 32 bits, but is this across the system, or is it on application by application basis.

A:Vista dilemma

Hi Josef,

Welcome to Vista Forums.

16 bit programs are not supported at all in Vista. You can run 32 bit and 64 bit programs at the same time in the 64 bit version of Vista, but you must have 64 bit driver versions for all of your devices. 32 bit drivers will not work in the 64 bit Vista.

For more information on the 64 bit Vista, you might give this a read. It's pretty interesting.

64-bit: More than just the RAM

Hope this helps,
Shawn
