Establishing Scope of CERT/CSIRT

Q: Establishing Scope of CERT/CSIRT

Good Day to all. I hope you are fine and doing well.

I need your help about the Establishing the CERT/CSIRT

I am in phase of planning the CERT Process and Team. I will appreciate if you can help me for the following questions:

1. What Scope the CERT should have ideally it should address the incidents related to the information security i.e. Confidentiality/Integrity/Availability, but what will be the role of CERT in case of Physical Security Breach or Theft of Critical Hardware?

2. Should CSIRT also come in action in case of any IT Security Policy violation for example Pornography although it does not hit the three pillars of the IT Security CIA but it is against the company policy so who is going to take care of such policy violation?

3. How can I define the categorize incidents levels should I do it at high level for example DoS Attack, Hacking, Virus and Malicious Program and Unauthorized Access to Information or I should be more specific and define each incident in detail.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

2. Considering that porn sites are known to install malware, I think CSIRT should come and do a scan. If nothing malicious is found, the team could at least wag a finger at the user. But, porn surfing can also be taken care of with a content filter at the gate.

3. Are you trying to assign priority to incident response? What do you want to use the levels for?

Hey, I know this is a pretty random question, and I didn't know where to put it, since it doesnt really relate to anything. I was wondering exactly what the "scope" display on WMP 11 shows: just the amount of sound being made, regardless of timbre? Is the sound scrolling from right to left or is it showing all the sound at the moment you are looking at it?

I created a new scope on my widows 2000 Server. Everything is working great for all win98 machines. However my Windows 2000 machines can no longer log onto the network. I get the message "The system cannot log you on this domain because the systems computer account in its primary domain is missing or the password on that account is incorrect." This message appears no matter what account I try to log in under. Please help with any suggestions.

Greetings. I've been living with intensive cpu usage (and slow computer) for some time now but now I'm tired of it. Even as I type this, there is a latency between keypress and display. I'm not a tech newbie but must admit, I spent a lot of time trying to figure out what is happening and can't.

I look now to someone here to provide some advice. I've had this machine for a long time and don't want to wipe and reload please. I have a HiJxxthis log I can post and yes, you may roll your eyes when you see a few of the things running but maybe you will give me a pass on those.

Anyone have a couple of minutes to take a look for potential issues? I have tried MalWare, Spybot and AVG which all come back ok but something is not right. I am wondering if this could be a pretty high end logger that's really good at hiding? Or maybe a cheap one I'm just not bright enough to track down.
Platform: Windows XP SP3 (WinNT 5.01.2600)
MSIE: Internet Explorer v8.00 (8.00.6001.18702)
Boot mode: Normal

I'm up for feedback.

I have an XML parser that creates Objects. A pointer to this is then added to a binary tree, but when the parser goes onto create the next object obvesly the first object goes out of scope and is deleted. How can I get around this? The objects HAVE to be stored as pointers.
Code:

Vehicle *vehiclePointer = new Vehicle();
vehiclePointer = &newVehicle;
theTree->insertNode(vehiclePointer);
//fine here, still in tree
}
//in tree but null here

Thank you so much

A:Solved: C++ scope

I guess you could try to just create the pointer, allocate memory for it, and then assign the value to the pointer as opposed to creating an object...

A few months back I was running out of IP addresses so I created a new scope 192.168.30.1 to 192.168.31.255; I am running a parent domain with a child domain under it for a school; now when a pc receives an ip address from 192.168.31.x the network drives for the parent domain will not map and if it is not part of the parent domain it will not allow you to add it. However it the pc is part of the child domain and is assigned an 192.168.31.x ip the mapping works fine and you can join the child domain. When the pc received an ip from 192.168.30.x it works fine. Any idea on what I did to cause this? Is there a setting I forgot to check, etc?

Thanks in advance for any ideas of what I can check.

Q: A+ cert

Hey, im just wondering if ne one knows the answer to this:
(since there are 2 parts to A+ cert.)
I took the old core hardware A+ test, 220-301, last summer, and i have school so i didnt take the other one. Now i want to take it the other half (OS), but there are new A+ tests now, so im wondering if i take the old OS test i still get the cert? Or is it useless? Or do i need to write both new ones?
THanks

A:A+ cert

Likely yes. Ask them. It all depends on whether they gave you a time frame by which you had to take the second test?
How much did you spend for the test taken? Did you pass well with a good score?

How do we go and assign IPs for the users, provided they should be in the same network.

A:DOS attack and IP address given by router outside scope

I think you may be connecting to the Guest Network, your router has that feature. Maybe the Guest Network uses a different IP address range.

An ACK scan and FIN scan are both scans: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Port_scanner#ACK_scanning . Technically they are not DOS attacks, although they will affect your network use if the hacker is not trying hide his attempts to connect by scanning slowly.

The Start Button does not do much, or so it seems to me.

There is no Start/Programs, no Start/Control Panel, etc.

For example, to get to Windows Update I have to revert to the Metro desktop
then type Windows Update in the search box etc.

Is there a configuration option I have missed?

Cheers

Daniel

You could right click on the Start button for the Power User Tasks menu for more options.

Hi Everyone,

I have a strange networking situation. Let me start by saying this situation is on a Domain, and that I am using Windows 2011 SBS and Windows 7 clients.

My server has a DHCP range of 192.x.x.150 to 192.x.x.199 - and all other I.P. addresses are static.

On a workstation located at I.P. 192.x.x.13 I am seeing an address conflict.

When I perform an "nbtstat -a 192.x.x.13" command from the server I am given the logical computer name of a staff members personal laptop.

Investigation of the laptop reveals that it is set to DHCP, and clearly the address of 192.x.x.13 is outside of my servers DHCP scope, so this I.P. should never be assigned, let alone in duplicate.

I Googled this topic before posting, and it was suggested that IPv6 could be having an adverse affect. I determined this because I performed a ping on the laptop and only got a MAC address back rather than an I.P. address.

However after unticking IPv6, and rebooting, the laptop is still causing havoc.

I can set a static I.P. address on the laptop, however this is not ideal.

If anybody knows of any way that I can stop this from happening it will be greatly appreciated.

Kind Regards,

Davo

A:DHCP assigning address outside of Scope

Hi Everyone,

Further to my earlier post here is a screen shot of both ipconfig & Control Panel settings on the Laptop:

I have actually managed to fix this by -

1). Changing the IPv4 settings to static - and assigning the address in question (e.g.192.x.x.13)
2). Subsequently changing the IPv4 settings back to "Obtain an IP address automatically"

The laptop now reports an I.P. address of 192.x.x.174 (Preferred), which is actually within the DHCP scope of my Server!

Hello guys,

I use MS Excel 2010. In this app, I know that using Formulas > Define names > define name it is possible to name a cell (or range). At that dialog box there is a scope rectangle which if I choose the entire sheets scope (workbook) so it's said that this name is valid for the entire workbook. First what does this valid mean please? Then, OK, I think I understand it but why when I name cell A1 (in the worksheet1 for example) to "first" its name on that worksheet is valid, that is its name, here "first", is shown in Name Box, but although I've used workbook scope, when I change the worksheet (to worksheet2) and active cell A1, just A1 is shown there not the put name, "first"!?

A:Define names in workbook scope

If you name A1 "First" in worksheet1, the name is a valid name that defines the cell reference worksheet1!A1.

The name is not allocated to any other range of cells.

So, A1 in worksheet2 is still A1. Setting the scope of the name to global does define the same name for the same cell(s) in any other worksheets.

However, in worksheet2 you can reference the name "First" and it will use the contents of the named cell(s) from worksheet1.

An Example;

In Worksheet1 A!:A3 I enter the contents..

A1: Apples
A2: Oranges
A3: Lemons.

Then I define the name "Fruit" that covers that range of cells. I also set the scope of the name to be workbook (Which is the default)

Now I go to worksheet2 and I create a data validation list object and I tell it to use the "Fruits" named range. I create this list in Worksheet2 at B2 (any cell would be fine, just using B2 as an example).

When I click on the list drop down in worksheet2!B2 it will show me apples, oranges and lemons.

Had I not used the workbook scope I could not have used the name in any but the named scope sheets. Eg. If I had selected Sheet1 as the scope, then that name can only be referenced from within sheet1

Got Avast on a couple of PCs and I have a question about hardened mode. Anyone know what exactly changes with hardened mode on aggressive compared to moderate or off? Also, will alerts generated by hardened mode say hardened mode on the alert? Seem to remember seeing that once at some point a while back. I also have CyberCapture enabled btw.

I have this one PC rigged to the gills with Avast. Only thing not maxed is "Scan files with default extensions". I had backed off of "Scan all files" after reading some of you guys' comments in various threads.

After going through the settings, I have realized I have basically turned on everything else at the highest settings. It's kind of an old system w/ 4GB and a core2quad processor, so I wouldn't mind backing off on some things. Comodo Firewall is also on the PC (@cruelsister but HIPs on Safe), so I don't know how much of it I need. On the main PC, I've grown accostomed to using NVT ERP as a fallback for Comodo (CFW still only a moderate<->high trust rating for me so far reliability-wise), but it's not installed on the avast PCs. Because of this, I tend to go a little bit hard with protection when supplementing CFW.

A:Scope of Avast Hardened Mode

Found this Hardened Mode Avast thread from 2013 explaining hardened mode.

@RejZoR explained the 2 modes quite well.

Hardened Mode: Moderate
Under normal conditions, if avast! decides that some file is too suspicious by various characteristics, it then throws it into the DeepScren for further scanning. But if Moderate Hardened Mode is enabled, avast! automatically blocks files that are detected as suspicious by preliminary analysis.
In most cases DeepScreen checks the file and if it doesn't find obvious malicious problems with it, those files are started automatically after analysis. But Hardened Mode (Moderate) blocks it right there.

Hardened Mode: Aggressive
This mode behaves a bit differently. It actually relies on analysis on a very small scale and mostly relies on a huge whitelist database located in avast! Cloud. If file is located within the cloud and flagged as safe, it will allow to run it. If it's not found or marked as bad, it will block it. So, at least based on my experience, Aggressive Mode is actually much more secure and also a lot less intrusive. Only time that it will cause problems is with some very rare old software or very very new software that isn't used by thousands of users. Usually some very specialized programs used by only few users.
Moderate mode often feels a bit too paranoid (despite its name) because it often blocks safe programs just because they exhibit local suspicious file characteristics that are basically ignored by the... Read more

First off let me say that any help I find here will be greatly appreciated considering I have never seen a virus problem this bad before!

Imagine if you will a simple family pc (gateway, xp, p4... this is all I know) allowed to roam the net without one antivirus program or one user with the knowledge to stay away from certain things when surfing the net. This is what has been happening to my good friends family computer. They were having a problem with their pc and asked if I could take a look at it. I have been able to research several problems of my own in the past and figured that maybe I could get somewhere on their pc.

As I sat down at the computer with my friends sister sitting next me. (She was the prime user (and abuser) of the pc.) I waited for the pc to boot up and she tells me that the last time this happened her father brought the pc to a "computer guy" who fixed it but had told them he had never seen so many viruses, worms, trojans, and other assorted malware. She also said that he would not bring it back to him because of the amount of money he paid to have it fixed the first time!

Now the problem with the computer!

It boots up windows only to have explorer crash immediately and a window keeps popping up directing me to use system restore to fix whatever is happening. I hit ctrl+alt+del and a ridiculous unending stream of processes are controlling the computer. It was impressive! I go back to the window about the system restore and after s... Read more

Hello Tavo McDouglas and welcome,

Quote:

My question is without being able to scan or view anything or execute any kind of program on this pc, is it possible to obtain, create, or conjure a disk that upon start up would start the process of cleaning this disaster or put the computer in state so I can start to disassemble the tangled virus web inside this thing.

Today's infections are much too intertwined with the OS, and often interfere or target tools. So, while I can appreciate your desire to help this friend, for any of us to provide you with any instruction whatsoever, without seeing proper diagnostic scans beforehand, would be nothing but reckless and irresponsible on our part.

Don't they have Windows Installl disc? Generally speaking, given their past and current surfing habits, I've no doubt the security of the system has been severely compromised and can't be trusted. One is better off reformatting and reinstalling the OS.

If they do any banking or other financial transactions on the PC or if it should contain any other sensitive information, they need to get to a known clean computer and change all passwords to accounts, from that clean machine. It would also be wise to contact those same financial institutions to apprise them of the situation.

We have a working DA environment using a single server, we are planning to go NLB  and Multisite but MS advises not to use a self signed cert for NLS which we currently do use.
I have created a Web server cert for our NLS server following the below issued by our internal CA
https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-server/remote/remote-access/directaccess/add-to-existing-vpn/step-1-configure-da-inf-davpn

I add the NLS cert on our DA server, click next and then go to apply the DA settings.
When I do this it says DNS name does not exist. I can create this manually before adding the cert but it gets removed. If I tick use self-signed cert the DNS name gets created automatically.
I can't understand what I'm doing wrong and why DA will not accept our CA issued NLS cert

Hey all,

We've just set up a Cisco 3000 series VPN on our network, and are using an internal server here as the certificate server for the VPN clients.

Just one problem. I'm still fairly new to doing new things on Windows 2000.

So I've been going through Microslop's site trying to figure out exactly how to set up the certificate server here. But I haven't found anything which explains everything, or if I need to install something, (besdies Cisco's VPN client) on the client computers.

I've created a couple keys through Certificate Server, but have no idea how to go about using them, or how to view the keys like in NT, like;
---------
dsfjsfhajalf
asfsfghsgjhf

lashg9hgw
---------
You know, that big encrypted key.
So if anyone knows a quick explanation of this, or where to find a description of what I need to do, I will be forever indebted to you.
Thanks.

A:Setting DHCP Allocator IP address scope

I do see a discrepancy in the IP address:

192.168.137.0
255.255.255.0

192.168.2.x
255.255.255.0

The 255's mark which portion of the IP address is reserved for network routing and which portion is for computers/devices.

Basically, your DHCP server is handing out IP addresses for the 192.168.137.x network, but the Network card of the server is configured to be on the 192.168.2.x network.

I recommend changing the DHCP server scope to remove 192.168.137.0/255.255.255.0 and to hand out IP addresses for 192.168.2.0/255.255.255.0

Hopefully this makes sense.

Hey guys, I was just wondering if anyone knew how to fix a problem that I've been having with the sniper rifle scopes on Hitman: Contracts. The scopes work fine on the training level and the first level, but after that whenever I try to use the scope, it shows up as either completely black or extremely blurry. Please, someone help me!

Our Nessus vulnerability scanner has been flagging our computers with the following vulnerability: SSL Certificate Signed Using Weak Hashing Algorithm

Basically what it's telling us is that we need to upgrade the local Remote Desktop Certificate from SHA1 to SHA2.

These certificates are self-signed and self-generated by the local machine. If you look at the certificate you'll see that theIssued to: and Issued by: fields show the name of the local machine.

The question is: how do these auto-generated, self-signed certificates, which are currently SHA1, get upgraded to SHA2? Remember, these are not created by the local Enterprise CA, they're auto-generated by the local machine itself for Microsoft-branded software such as AD and RDC.

Looking for ideas/suggestions on how to do this.

Hey guys,

I have a few questions about how Windows 7 handles checking the internet for new certs and CRL's. We are looking to run Windows 7 Embedded in an offline configuration that still relies on creating a secure SSL negotiation with an in-house web application.
We're exploring options such as opening the our network's firewall to allow outbound access to GoDaddy\Microsoft CRL's and Microsoft's cert repository that it can get new Trusted Root certs from

1. When and how often does Windows check for new root certificates?
2. When and how often does Windows check the CRL's for cert revocations?
3. What websites does Windows look at for Microsoft's CRL and cert repository?

Thanks!

My computer had blue screened twice, done a check disk for errors spontaneously and can't successfully restore a previous windows restore point... although i think the windows restore issue is not related. I've had that issue since I bought the computer and even when it was put in for warranty for the issue it still couldn't update windows when they gave it back to me >.< I've backed up all my data. Hi,

I'm getting an error msg on my own website after installing my Verisign SSL Seal. Certificate itself works fine, but the seal (click here to verify) is giving errors on one IE browser and not another.

Can you guys please help me by telling me if you see an error msg displayed on the IE information bar when you visit my page:

http://applesofgold.com/test.html

I'm getting an error with my new Verisign SSL cert on my computer at work but not at the one at home. Using IE on both computers, same version, v. 7.0. I don't get this error on FireFox on either computer.

The error I get is:

To help protect your security, IE has blocked this website from displaying content with security certificate errors.

I don't understand why it's showing up on my work computer and I'm hoping it's not showing up on other people's computers.

I would love it if I got a lot more computers checking to see if they get the same error.

Please help!

Thank you,
Afshin

I did not try the link but I will offer a few words of advice though.

You do not want to go into any restricted sites at work and should wait till ya get home but if you cannot do that then here ya go.

Open IE7

Click Tools
Click Internet Options
Click the Security tab
Click the Internet icon
Click Custom level
Locate Display mixed content
Click the radio button next to Enable (the default setting is 'was Prompt'
Click OK to save your changes

Have fun!

I installed ATA with the self signed certs as i was having trouble getting it to work.  Now that I have it working i want to put a real cert on the management site.  What is needed to complete this?

Do i simply go to iis and change the cert?
Do i also need to change it in the configuration page where it references it by ip address?
When i do that, do i need to redeploy / update the gateways?

I am on 1.6 as of an hour ago.  Please reference the version number you are familiar with in your responses.  I would imagine that they are the similar if not identical but i want to be sure we are on the same page.

I recently read that a Netherlands CA, DigiNotar, had been hacked so updates are coming out to remove it from the CA list but that it should mostly affect Iran. So today I got an error message trying to access my bank (neither it nor I have any connection with Iran). The error message said "Peer's certificate has been revoked".

It seems too much of a coincidence for this to be unrelated so my question is whether the problem is wider-spread than the article said, or did one of the updates revoke a wider range of certificates than was needed, or did I just get unlucky?

Does anybody know what's going on with this problem? Thanks.

I am attempting to run a (legitimate) ADCH++ hub from my computer. I am trying to restrict access to few certain IP blocks. The problem that I encounter is that the auto-created firewall rules Windows creates are not able to be changed.

In Windows Firewall with Advanced Security, when I attempt to change the scope to allow only the IP blocks I want, Windows Firewall states,

"Error: The parameter is incorrect

Status: 'Defer to user' setting can only be used in a firewall rule where program path and TCP/UDP protocol are specified with no additional scopes."

This problem also happens when I attempt to allow only a certain TCP or UDP port. These rules are in place for TCP and UDP traffic, for only Private and Public Networks.

I naturally tried to create my own rules for those programs, replacing the auto-created ones, but Windows Firewall blocked traffic trying to get to my hub, even though the settings in the rules were the same.

Is there something I am missing? What would be a good alternative so that only those IP blocks can connect?

A:Firewall Rule: Unable to change scope for TCP and UDP rules

Perhaps Comodo Free Firewall shall be a good alternative to the Windows Firewall. Please try it out.

Hi,

I have a problem with Windows 7 Firewall
I added an exception for port 1433 and I set the scope as follows:
- Local IP Address: Any IP Address for my local LAN
- Remote IP address - These IP Addresses where I added my home IP address.
I can access the port from my home, but I cannot access the port from local LAN.
What can I do?

Many thanks,

Hello good people of techguy

I've just formatted my hd, and I'm back to the newest version of Windows XP. I'm currently connected through my WLAN, since I can't seem to be able to establish my LAN connection.

My PC is connected through a LAN cable to the Router, which is connected to the modem in turn.
Now Windows Help says that all LAN connections are established automatically. Furthermore, when I try to create a new connection with the wizard, and I choose permanent broadband connection, it says the connection is already active and ready to be used - yet it is nowhere to be found.

This is what my "Networks" or "Network connections" (whatever it's called in English) in Control Panel looks like. As you can see, Wireless Connection (= "Draadloze netwerkverbinding") is listed, and LAN is nowhere to be found.

A preemptive thanks guys!

A:Establishing LAN Connection @ XP

something's missing in your screenshot. 'Local Area Connection' (or whatever it's called in Dutch) is not shown here.

check your device manager and see if your Network Controller is listed, you may have to install the drivers.

Thanks you for your replies to "joining a network". I have started a new subject for clarity.

First an apology. I have now worked my way through Networking for Dummies and although I am still a dummy, I at least understand now what an SSID is! I realise that I went off half cocked because I did not really know what I was asking. Thanks for your patience.

Back to basics, have I heard that before somewhere, My son-inlaw has recently moved house and all the computers concerened were used in the network he had established in the old house and his office, which was a hard-wired system. He is using windows XP Pro with an NTFS file system on all computers. Another friend connected up his essential computers "to get him going" but he is not availble to help now. My son-inlaw has recently joined Orange and taken up their broadband pckage, which supplied the Router.

The wireless router, supplied by orange, is a Livebox EA50 model DV 4210-WU.

The present set up, in the new house, is as follows:

Orange EA50 router connected by its orange cable to a Corega FSW 5PM switch. Connected to the Corega, by Ethernet cables, are the following..

Davidís Computer
Maurenís computer
An Office Computer (The Office computer was the computer that was designated to hold the shared files in the old network and has been connected to allow them access to those files now.)
A Belkin 2.4ghz 802.11g (NIC?)

The Router, Corega and the computers are all in the same room and this works... Read more

I have a HP Pavillion a6700f PC.

1. I am the administraotr. I have established an account for my wife and child. PROBLEM: I am receiving internet connection, but I am unable to establish an internet connection for their accounts. I need a solution so they can connect to the internet and web sites on their own accounts instead of having to go into my account to use the internet. Please give me steps I need to follow to establish internet connections for each of their accounts.

2. Second tag: I am unable to forward (email) websites or pages of websites to others using my MSN hotmail account. How can I email these sites?

3. Third tag: When I receive an email with a U tube or other type video attached to view, I can view for a few seconds, it then cuts out the video and sound, then starts up again. This interupts the whole video. What do I need to do so I do not experince these anoying outages?

4. Fourth tag: I receive HP updates intermittently that ask me to download them into my PC. Each time I try to download the updates, the download fails. What gives? Thanks.

Many thanks, James1111

A:Establishing two more accounts

1. Having no knowledge of your ISP, network, or the problems being experienced about all I can offer is to "establish internet connections for each of their accounts" the same way you are "receiving internet connection."

2. You can't forward websites or pages of websites. You can only forward email that you've received. If you want to call attention to a website the best and easiest way is to just send a link to it. That also avoids any question of copyrights.

3. The first thing to do is determine the cause--slow video servers? Your internet bandwidth too low? Underpowered computer that can't keep up? ...

4. From my experience (and advice a long time ago from one of their tech support people) I'd say that automatic updates is not one of HP's strengths. Best to avoid their auto updates, turn it off if possible, and go get the updates manually when/if you are having a problem.
