I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

What version of Windows are you using? What Service Pack?

Boot into Safe Mode (press F8 during boot) and attempt a normal shutdown.

Check Device Manager for any driver errors and make sure all drivers have been updated.

Hello,

My mother was using my computer and she keeps going to this website that downloads malware (yeah, she not going to go on this website anymore... lol) on my computer. I have dealt with this several times and now I have a few things on my computer that I cannot seem to get rid of.

I had over 32 malware on my computer and managed to get rid of those. However, I am still having the NT Authority\System shutdown problem upon using my computer from hibernation. Also, whenever I reboot, I get the helper.dll in the common folder upon startup. I may or may not have other problems also.

I really appreciate anyone who can help me.
Thanks in advance.

DEP problems!!

My internet IE7 keeps stopping, citing DEP issues. As you know the DEP prevents the computer from allowing programs, which the system deems harmful, to start to protect the computer from these files.

The question is: How do I know which file(s) are trying to start that are causing the DEP to kick in? Does DEP keep a log? When IE7 is running, I have no other programs working so it must be something "behind the scene."

Thanks in advance.

Run your anti virus and check for problems.

Type event viewer in search and see what you can learn.

Try turning off your Anti Virus and fire wall

Download and test your system for malware. Then test once a week.
Malwarebytes.org

My guess is that there is something in your computer that you want to remove.

Everything is fine (well, except for this burning program or the CD RW drive). Anyway, everytime it comes out of Standby, it doesnt Shutdown. It comes to a point where all the icons are gone after it saved the settings.

What I do is hold down the power button til it shuts down. When booting up after, it doesnt prompt me that it wasnt shutdown correctly and doesnt go through the scandisk.

any suggestions what i can do from here?

A:Problem w/ Shutdown

I am having a similar problem in XP-Home. When I shut down or tell xp to shut down and restart, it hangs every time on 'windows is shutting down'. The only change I have made is to install a Compaq A1500 printer/fax/scanner. I have tried ending the resident progams that loaded with the Compaq software before shutting down, but no help. I have not changed anything else, so I am confused as to what is causing windows to do this. Also, when I reboot, it does not go through checkdisk, just boots properly.

i have problem with shutdown button.when i shutdown my laptop, that is not turn down.the power button stay open, and the laptop is like hibernate.so when i want to open it i must push the button first for some minutes to close from motherboard, and after i open it.i have checked the power options and the taskbar option ,and there is not problem.SORRY FOR MY ENGLISH.

A:problem with shutdown

It sounds like you've got the laptop's power-off button configured for "Hibernate" instead of for "Shutdown". If you continue to keep the button pressed down to force it to shutdown suddenly, you will cause errors in the Windows filing system which may eventually prevent Windows from starting.

Go to Control Panel > Power Options.
In the left pane, click "Choose what the power buttons do"
Where it says "When I press the power button.." click the down-arrow and select "Shut down"

Now click "Save Changes".

Now all you need to do is give the power button a quick push and Windows should shut down properly.

HI,

When inititaing shutdown/restart/standby there is a long (several minutes with an hourglass cursor displayed) time between the pwr button/start menu entry being pressed and the shutdown/restart/standby window being displayed. Once a selection is made then the process is quick. It's just getting the selection window up in the first place that is the issue.
I've tried to see what process are running during this phase but all apps stop being displayed when the button is pressed and resume when the window is cancelled.

Any ideas would be very much appreciated - thnx

When I go to turn off my computer or restart it, it tries to end task for the iexplore.exe. It will say the program is not responding and the computer won't turn off or restart like I asked it to.

Also, when I open up my task manager and look in processes I see that iexplorer.exe is still running when I don't have any IE windows open at all. And the strange thing is I can't end task it and there's multiples of them. As well, if I don't have iexplore.exe in the process it has a problem with ending sysfader.

Hi There!

Shut down problems can be caused by a number of different things.

Here's the first thing to try...

run MSCONFIG-
Choose "Selective Startup"
UNCHECK "Load Startup Items"
APPLY and reboot.

Test the system shutdown without all the startup items loading.

If everything works fine, then go back into MSCONFIG and go to the "Startup" TAB.
place a check mark in ONE ITEM at a time and apply/Reboot.

This will give you an idea of what in startup would be causing the problem.
Good Luck!

Hi magpie, There are so many reasons why Windows ME has problems shutting down, I would think everyone has experienced them at some time or other, the best place to visit is this site http://support.microsoft.com/defaul...port/kb/articles/Q273/7/46.ASP&NoWebContent=1 just click on it, I have found that holding down the control key when shutting down helps but its not a complete answer

Hi

Win 7 installed about a month ago from XP using Laplink PC mover upgrade assistant. Worked OK, no great problems.

About a week ago the computer started rebooting automatically after a normal shutdown. Only way out is to power off.

Any ideas anyone?

That is typically a bios setting. Have you updated your bios recently (that you are aware of)?

Hello,
i have instaled windows xp profesional sp3 on a desktop.
after that i realised that problem:
some times when i shutdown the pc and when it is in the last state in which it must shutdown,
it sticks at the last screen (save settings).
the mouse pointer sticks too, the power button doesn't work neither.

i updated all the drivers and the bios,
i changed the values in registry "CrashControl" from 1 to 0, and the "PowerDownAfterShutdown" from 0 to 1
i changed the value in registry of "WaitToKillAppTimeOut" from 20000 to 27000.

also in device managment, at the usb divice i choosed the properties, power managment and i unchecked the button: "computer can disable the divice....".

nothing of the above worked

there is not APM option in the Power options

Please help.
thanks

Actually you want to change twh WaitToKillAppTimeOut to 2000. Here's a list of simple things you can try. If none of these work, go to please go to my next post below:

1) Make sure "clear pagefile at shutdown" is not enabled:
start - run - regedit
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager\Memory Management]

Set ClearPageFileAtShutdown value to 0
2) Start - Run - Regedit
Navigate to the following Registry key:
HKEY CURRENT USER\Control Panel\Desktop
Double click on the AutoEndTasks entry and replace the 0 with a 1 in the Value data text box

For the next two, if the dword value indicated does not exist, create it:

Double click on the WaitToKillAppTimeout entry in the right pane and change the Value data to 2000

Double click on the HungAppTimeout entry in the right pane and change the Value data to 1000

Reboot

3) HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control
Right-click on WaitToKillServiceTimeout and change it to 2000

I run Windows XP had to recently restore my laptop. Things are getting back to "normal" except that now when I click on the "start" button and then "turn off computer", I have to wait about 4-5 minutes while the hour glass icon spins before I get the "logoff, shutdown, restart" menu. Once this appears and I select "shutdown" everything goes okay and shuts down pretty fast.

What might be causing this long delay?

Thanks a bunch,

Rob

A:Problem with XP Shutdown

Hi Rob,

Welcome to TSG!

I really don't know what is causing your situation, but here is a tip:
Tip 6: Force unresponsive applications to close at shutdown.

When it comes to balky PCs, few things annoy us more than the moment when we try to shut down Windows and it tells us it can't because some crashed application isn't responding, and that we have to do it ourselves by clicking the End Now button.

This registry hack changes that. Here's how it works.

1. Launch RegEdit (select Start > Run, type regedit and click OK) and browse to HKEY_USERS\.DEFAULT\Control Panel\Desktop

2. Find the string called AutoEndTasks. Right-click it, select Modify from the pop-up menu, and change the data value from 0 to 1. (If you can't find this string, create it by selecting Edit > New > String Value and set the data value to 1.)

Welcome to TSF.

Could be spyware. Please download HijackThis. Create a folder at C:\HJT and move HijackThis.exe there. Run a scan and save the log file. Post the whole log file here. Do not fix anything since most of them listed there are harmless (some are system required). This program will help us determine if there is any spyware/malware on your computer.

Could anybody help me please???????????????????

You probably have a permissions issue on the remote computer. If you don't have an account that matches your username/password on the computer to be shut down, it probably won't work.

Hello. I am having a problem with my PC. It shutsdown at random times as well it will not let me get into My Computer at all. I'm not sure if this is an OS problem or hardware. I have done every single spyware and antivirus program available. Got rid of all the spyware I had and it still continues to do it. It's so bad that when I go to try and format/reinstall XP from the cd it still shuts down. So I beleive this is hardware problem but I am not sure exactly. Any suggestions or help will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

How about filling in your User Profile (top left on any page).
Check the CPU-temperature, that all fans are working, that you don't have any dustbunnies.
Is your powersupply strong enough?

I have a problem when shutting down the computer. About 4 out of 5 times when I select shutdown, the computer hangs on the blue screen and I must force it to shut down by holding the startup button. Then on the next startup, about half the time, the system goes through a check.
I am using XP2. I was told by Circuit City that this could be caused by spyware. I brought it to them for a fix, among other problesm I have Spy Sweeper installed but even after a scan and the $100 they charged me, the problem persists. The recommended a clean install of XP2 but I am trying to avoid that route. One thing I do notice is that I have a constant correction on the startup scan with many files in a Temp folder of Spy Sweeper that are invalid. The system corrects itself, but then it happens again. Just to note, this shutdown problem was occuring before Spy Sweeper was installed, so I am thinking that it is not the cause.

Any suggestions on what I should do to correct this problem?

Thanks

It's been like this for awhile but now it's starting to get very old, everytime I shutdown my computer it doesnt shutdown it just restarts back up. My computers pretty clean now of anything that would harm it but It's still doing this. I havnt downloaded anything really weird that I can remember of. Any fixes or common problems to this? The only thing I can think of that may of changed anything to my comp was a new video and sound card. I can boot perfect, restart perfect, only way to turn it off's doing it hard.

-Thanks Mike

A:Shutdown problem

If you are using a PCI video card and the AGP motherbaord drivers are
installed,it can cause the computer to send a restart signal instead
of a terminate on some systems.
This can be resolved by going to the device manager, under system devices
and disabling the PCI to AGP bridge.
May be listed differently but will be similar.

Hello everyone,

Each time I want to shut down my pc using the regular way (shutdown menu), the application stop, the screen gets black, but the cpu remains under power. To shut it down I have to do it manually using the on/off button. After that, after putting it on again, a scandisk starts automatically and finds nothing. All these operations are time consuming. I suspect that there is sth (virus?) hidden constantly present and working on my pc. Btw, Norton doesn't detect anything wrong. I ran the spybot fix, but this has not changed anything. Anyone has an idea please? Many thanks in advance.

A:shutdown problem

The two most common culprits for hanging on shutdown are anti-virus programs and drivers. Since you have Norton AV installed and it's the worst offender, try shutting it down before you shut down the computer. If that solves the problem, look around on the Symantec web site to see if they offer any solutions. I don't use Norton so I can't be more specific than that, sorry.

If it's not the AV program, look in Device Manager to see if anything has a yellow warning sign (Control Panel>System>Hardware Tab>Device Manager button) If so, try reinstalling the drivers for that device.
