Intermittent shutdowns on T580 w/ Ultra Docking Station - Intel Thermal Framework issue

Q: Intermittent shutdowns on T580 w/ Ultra Docking Station - Intel Thermal Framework issue

I'm experiencing an issue with intermittent shutdowns on my new T580 (20L9) with the Ultra Docking Station (40AJ). The issue appears to derive from the Intel Dynamic Platform and Thermal Framework driver, as I typically see a corresponding error (DPTF Event ID 256 - Unhandled Exception) in Event Viewer, the details for which I'm including below. I'm running Windows 10 x64 1803 (Build 17134.81). It appears that certain CPU/GPU-intensive tasks will tip the driver to immediately put the system in sleep mode, so not technically a full system shutdown. Most recently, I attempted to restore a browser session in Chrome after an OS restart, opening a number of browser windows w/ multiple tabs each, which triggered the issue. Over the course of my daily use, it will happen anywhere from one to five times, and it's extremely annoying. I have not experienced the issue with the system undocked, however, my computer is docked about 90% of the time I'm using the machine, and I did recently update to Win 10 1803, which could be part of the problem (?) I am using **all** of the latest drivers available on Lenovo's site, including that for the Intel Dynamic Platform and Thermal Framework, version 8.3.10207.5567 as of the time of this post. I'm also running the latest BIOS, i.e. 1.10. I'm not sure if there's a BIOS setting available that could help with the issue or some power management setting? I'm including the full Event Viewer details below. Please advise. Preferred Solution: Intermittent shutdowns on T580 w/ Ultra Docking Station - Intel Thermal Framework issue

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

A:Random sleeps on T580 w/ Ultra Docking Station - Intel Thermal Framework issue

Did you ever get this resolved?  I have a user with the exact same symptoms, but we haven't done a lot of testing off the dock yet.  We've updated to the latest Intel Thermal Framework drivers from Lenovo (Just came out on 6/8) but that didn't help.  Updated to the latest drivers from Intel, no better.  Tried dock firmware, nothing.  Lenovo came out and replaced the system board - no better.  We push a clean corporate image to ALL machines, include a few hundred Thinkpads we have out there, and this is the only one exhibiting this behavior (Also the only T580 we have out there so far, everything else is T480.)  Lenovo wants their image back on it before we do anything else, which is tough because the user is a few hundred miles away.

I have a T440s presently with a T480s due for delivery this week - It seems that the docking platform for the T440s won't work with the T480s - correct?  I have looked for a similar dock for the T480S without success (though this doesn't always mean something isn't available, just impossible to find on the Lenovo website...)  Can anyone pont me to an Ultr Dock for the T480s - and/or confirm that the one for the T440s won't work?  Is the Thunderbolt 3 dock the closest I can get to the same functionality (without the usefulness of an actual docking base) for the T480?  Thanks for any assistance in advance.

Good Morning, First of all thank you very much in advance for your support... I have a problem with this product, I have plugged in an EliteBook HP, but unfortunatly when docked the VGA of the laptop could not be used. I would like to use the VGA embedded in the docking station AND at the same time the VGA of the laptop. Any solution? many thanks Solution already tried but still not working:1) I have already tried to move to the screen page on the control panel, but the monitor linked to the laptop VGA is not working (when the docking station is plugged in)2) sp65034.exe returns me an error "Faild to find synaptic mst dp hub ic" so I cannot install ithttp://h20564.www2.hp.com/hpsc/swd/public/detail?swItemId=ob_128239_1

A:HP ULTRA SLIM 2013 docking station

I don't know which notebook model you have, but I'm finding random posts online about HP notebooks only being able to drive one analog monitor at a time, so you may be out of luck there. That docking station firmware update is for Displayport hub built into the docking station.  It can only be updated if you're connected to at least one monitor using displayport.  And it has nothing to do with analog port anyway, so it won't help you even if you could update the firmware.

I have a new LG ultra wide monitor that has support for HDMI and DisplayPort that I cannot seem to get working.  I have tried connecting the displayport cable to the dock and montior and I do not get a signal at all.  I have also tried the HDMI connection but I cannot get the resolution to the recommended 2560 x1080. Any direction would be very helpful/.

A:Dell XPS with Docking Station and LG Ultra Wide Monitor...

DisplayLink can support that resolution, but the D1000 is a very old dock that uses a very old DisplayLink chipset, and that particular chipset probably doesn't.  However, even with a newer version of DisplayLink such as would be found in the D6000 dock, DisplayLink would give you an inferior experience at that resolution anyway if you ever did things like gaming or full-screen video.  You really want your display to be directly controlled by the GPU.  So, considering that you have a 9550 that has a Thunderbolt 3 port, you have two options:
- Buy a USB-C to DisplayPort adapter, which would tap into the native GPU DisplayPort output wired to that port.
- If you want to have everything connected to a dock, buy either a WD15 or TB16 dock.  Either one would allow the attached display(s) to be driven directly by your GPU rather than through DisplayLink, and unlike your D1000, these docks can additionally charge your system via their USB-C/Thunderbolt 3 cable, so you'd have a true single-cable solution.  The WD15 allows a single display of that resolution (or dual 1080p), and the TB16 allows up to dual 4K displays or three 2560x1600 displays.  Since you have an XPS 15 9550, with the WD15 you'd need the 180W adapter version and with the TB16 you'd need the 240W adapter version.

For my XPS 12 9250, under the power scheme, there is only one setting for Intel Dynamic Platform and Thermal Framework Settings, which is [email protected] This is the only setting for both on battery and plugged in.
The Intel m5-6y54 has a TDP of 4.5w and can be configured up to 7w or down to 3.5w. I believe in other mobile systems, users have the ability to select a lower power mode while on battery to extend battery life (at expense of performance).
Given that the XPS 12 has short battery life (when comparing to its peers), shouldn't it make sense for Dell to enter a setting within the chipset thermal framework to allow the cpu to operate at a lower power setting for longer battery life?
I certainly would want that option. Is that something that Dell can implement?

Sounds like the dock drivers you are using cannot be W7 compatible, that simple.

You'll need to check compatability and availability of driver updates with the maker.

It is running XP pro with SP2.

Hi All,  I have an EliteBook 840 G1 with a docking station. When I have the laptop connected to the docking station the network is fine.  If I leave the laptop connected to the docking station, turn the laptop off and then undock it, and then turn it back on, once the laptop has logged on, it runs incredibly slow, and the CPU has a 100% usage. If I then reconnect it to the docking station or connect a wired network connection to it, it suddenly starts working normally again and CPU usage drops to a normal amount of usage.  So it's a wired network issue. Can I fix this? No I don't seem to be able to.  I can only find A temporary fix, which is to uncheck LAN/WLAN switching. This is not ideal as we need to switch to LAN when docked to access certain shared drives. Things I have tried:  Updating Network driversUpdating Docking station driversUpdating BIOsUninstalling Network drivers and reinstalling them Disabling network card and re-enabling it Updating the Windows 7 image Turning LAN/WLAN switching on and off (restarting in between)Updating Various other drivers that were long shots at fixing the issue.  Any ideas? other than turning off LAN/WLAN switching?

Strangest thing happened suddenly.  I have a co-worker with two matching HP 24" monitors connected to her HP 2012 90W Docking station.  Once with VGA, the other with DVI.  Both monitors were working fine, but suddenly only ONE will display an image.  The other monitor keeps flashing that it is going into power saving mode.  MON1 = VGAMON2 = DVI If I unhook the VGA cable from MON1, MON2 displays fine. If I unhook the DVI cable from MON2, MON1 displays fine. If I swap the cables around (make MON1 connect via DVI, MON2 via VGA) the issue is the exact same.  I have 3 of these docking stations laying around and I've tried all of them and they all do the same thing.  I've tried differnet VGA and DVI cables and the issue persists.  I installed HP Support Advisor to download and install drivers and still nothing.  How here's the real kicker: If I remove one of the monitors and connect an old 19" HP monitor up, BOTH WORK FINE!!!!!!!!!!!  All of the troubleshooting I've done only confuses me more... I'm completely stumped.  Anyone give me any instruction or advise?

Hi, We have the Elitebook 1040 G3 and UltraSlim Dock using Windows 7. I am using 2 HP Compaq LA2205wg monitors that one monitor is connected to VGA and the other Monitor is connected to DVI that is connected to a StarTech display port. Display Adapters: Intel(R) HD Graphics 520.The firmware of the Docking station: 2.30 which is most current firmware. After imaging the laptop and we dock the laptop on UltaSlim Docking station you only get the one monitor which is the monitor that is connected by VGA. The DVI/Display port acts like it is not connected to a monitor or anything. When you go to Control Panel > Display > Change Display setting > you see that the laptop is set to mirror what the 1st Monitor has, then on the second monitor if you look at "Multiple displays" you see that it says "Disconnect the display".  When I change it to  "Extend desktop to this display" Then hit Apply and yes, I get all 2 Monitors working which is good, I can restart/shutdown the laptop and I will get 2 monitors. This is not something we want to do every time I dock my laptop. The next problem that relates to the problem above is when we undock the laptop and it falls asleep for 20 minutes or more we come back to the first problem which is when we dock the laptop to turn it on the lid open or close it still only displays one monitor which is the VGA. We have tried numerous number of things and everything that we have tried doesnt seem to be working so i... Hello Together

Have Docking Station D3100 connected via USB 3.0 to my laptop.
I recognized many times that when i touch or little bit even Move my dock station, or touch any wire connect to dock station- the second monitor immediately disappeared. And in some seconds or minutes it switched again.

it seems to me that docking station reacts to outer static electricity.

Does anybody has this issue?

Hi folks!I'm using my t430s in several areas, such as my parents house, or even at home, workplace, coffe shops, etc.... Well, at my parents house, i'm using a type 4336 docking station, with an old sharp FHD external tv hooked to the vga output.. And i used to activate it with fn+f7, when it's needed to show anything, when its necessary.... I have updated the windows lately, but after it the settings gone insane, and when i connect the laptop to the 4336 it sends the screen to the external, and need to change it back to laptop lcd by pressing the mentioned keys before. It is pretty frustrating, and i don't find the setting, which i was able to find before the update. It did the same way after the previoius update too.can somebody please help?I'm soo dissapointed in the new windows stuff by now. I used win 7 x64 for a looooong time, but.... the system came with win8 so its free os for me, and deceided to use it instead of 7. It was a mistake i know... Thank you in advance!carrEdit: I just noticed, if i close the lid, the secondary monitor is becoming the primary, and it turns itself on. How did this gone so bad?! :@

I have the new X1 Carbon 6th Gen with the ThinkPad Ultra Docking Station (40AJ0135US) and have noticed any time I lock my computer and my screens turn off or my screens just turn off from the computer being idle for the set amount of time that when it comes back up that all my windows have moved to the main laptop screen. I have two monitors plugged in with DisplayPort to the dock and I use the laptop screen as the main screen. Has anyone else noticed this same issue? Any fixes?

Hi!
I have a Latitude E7740 that runs Ubuntu Xenial (16.04). I dock it to a "Dell EURO2 Advanced E-port II" docking station.
If I boot it in the docking station, everything works fine, and I find all my two DVI-connected monitors.
However, if I undock, then put it into the dock again while running, it fails to enable the screens. I'm using a script called autorandr for switching between display modes - it uses xrandr. It tries to run:
xrandr --output DP1-1 --gamma 1.0:1.0:1.0 --mode 1920x1200 --panning 0x0 --pos 0x0 --rate 59.95 --reflect normal --rotate normal --output DP1-2 --gamma 1.0:1.0:1.0 --mode 1920x1200 --panning 0x0 --pos 1920x0 --rate 59.95 --reflect normal --rotate normal
But the X server responds with:
X Error of failed request: BadMatch (invalid parameter attributes)  Major opcode of failed request: 140 (RANDR)  Minor opcode of failed request: 21 (RRSetCrtcConfig)  Serial number of failed request: 48  Current serial number in output stream: 48
Running this exact command after booting in the dock is doing the right thing, but after undocking then docking, it doesn't work.
Any ideas here? I have updated to the latest BIOS version.
Problem also reported in launchpad with lot's of debug info, here:

Autorandr script is here: github.com/.../

Hello -  My x220 does not lock into  Mini Docking Station Series 3 that I bough recently. The rubber pads on the battery seem to be preventing the laptop from being docked. (Not sure if I am doing something wrong instead.) Also I am trying to set up a multi monitor display ( Dell U2415). Will appreciate some inputs on how I should resolve both the issues or a link if that has been covered before .

I have a ThinkPad T580 with the Ultra Dock (40AJ0135US) and I'm wanting to use two external 4k monitors. I found this post (https://forums.lenovo.com/t5/ThinkPad-T400-T500-and-newer-T/How-many-DisplayPorts-are-available-on-t...) that seems to indicate that this cannot be done, but it doesn't make sense since the dock utilizes two USB-C connections from the T580. Can a DP and USB-C on the dock be used for two 4k monitors? Is there any combination of ports that would allow the dock to support two 4ks? Will Lenovo be releasing a monitor compatibility matrix soon for their new laptop lineup, like this one: https://support.lenovo.com/ca/en/solutions/pd029622#USB-C%20dock ? I appreciate any help!

I got my new T580 today, and with it the Ultra Docking Station. It generally works fine except for some minor issues with my monitor still needing DVI, but that is easily solveable. The one big issue I have with it is my mouse:Moving it in circles shows freezes every few seconds, for up to a few seconds at a time! The mouse is practically unuseable as it is.It's a Logitech G500 mouse. Connecting it to one of the Laptops USB ports works makes it work just fine.Connecting one of our cheap default Microsoft mice to the dock also works just fine, but I'd really rather use my Logitech. I tried updating all the firmwares and drivers(OS in use is Windows 10 64bit), but nothing made any difference. The mouse is not only freezing, but judging by the constant device disconnect/connect sounds also completely reconnects every like 30-60 seconds. Using a USB event viewer confirmed that it is indeed the mouse being reconnected.

I have the Inspiron 5748 and the D3100 docking station.
Windows 10 creator update installed, all latest updates drivers etc.
DisplayLink Manager v8.0.762.0

I have an external HDMI monitor, the problem is simple.
When the monitor is plugged in the docking station anything using that HDMI screen DOES NOT use the NVIDIA GPU, it uses the on-board Intel chip.
When connecting the monitor directly to the laptop all applications on the external monitor use the NVIDIA GPU (I have this as default in the NVIDIA control panel)

Please advise on how I can get the D3100 to work with the NVIDIA GPU.

Many thanks.

Hello Everyone, I am having an issue with the NIC on the Ultra Slin dock 2013.  It will occasionally lose connectivity throught the NIC on the dock.  If I go into Device Manager, there is a bang on the Intel Ethernet Connection I218-LM.  I downloaded a fresh copy of the driver from the HP site and it installs without issue.  This reactivates the NIC on the dock and it will work for a period of time but then it will drop and show a bang on the NIC again. Also, there is a bang on the Intel Mnagement Engine Interface.  When attempting to reinstall the drive it fails and the shows a code 10 error in Device Manager. I am not sure if this is an issue with the dock or the laptop itself.  Any ideas, suggestions, input, or opinions are greatly appreciated.  Thank you all in advance for the time.  Have a fantastic day!  Respectfully, George D.

Hello,

I have an Intel NUC (D54250WYK) running Windows 7 Pro 64-bit and has been working fine up until a few weeks ago, and the issue is intermittent making it difficult to troubleshoot.

Every 2-3 times when the NUC wakes up, my remote control is no longer able to control the system. A simple reboot resolves the issue for a day or two, but then it comes back. One thing in particular that I found odd, is that the remote control is actually able to wake up the PC, but once Windows is up and running again it no longer accepts commands from the remote.

I've completely removed the drivers and reinstalled but it hasn't corrected the issue. And none of my searches so far have yielded any solution to fix the problem.

The Infrared receiver on the NUC is "Nuvoton Consumer Infrared (CIR) Driver for Windows 7 for Intel NUC"

I've got an odd problem with my office computer. It's a P4 2.8GHz, on an
Intel board, less than 1 year old. Just last week it would start shutting
off at night, and start up with a thermal error. After a week of doing
that, it began to shut off immediately after logging into Windows. I could
start it up and stay in the bios viewing the temps without it shutting off,
and the temps stayed just under 100 F.

First I cleaned all the fans and heat sinks. That didn't seem to help at
all. I pulled the heatsink and found the old thermal grease had dried up.
Cleaned it off, applied new, and seated everything. Also reseated the ram
just for good measure. Turned off bios control of the fan, and even flashed
the bios with the most recent update. Now the computer is back to staying
on all day, but shuts off at night. I installed the Intel monitoring
software for Windows, it never reports an increase in temperature above 95
F, and doesn't ever log an error of overheating. The heatsink is not at all warm to the touch.

The ps voltages are listed as just over 1/10 from the expected values.

My first thought was that the motherboard thermal sensor had gone bad, and I was going to replace the board. I did a little searching on this problem, and I see claims of bad boards, processors, heatsinks, ram, or power supplies.

Any suggestions on what might be causing this?

Thanks in advance,
-Michael

Recently I have been having trouble with my PC recognizing my Nvidia GPU that came with the laptop that I bought. Along with doing a clean install of the Nvidia drivers and software I also updated the BIOS from the HP website. Unfortunately the GPU is still not being recognized, but a more immediate problem that has arisen is that about 60 seconds after logging in and getting to the desktop, my screen fades to black and the fan goes into overdrive, then the computer eventually shuts down. When I turn it back on I receive a message saying a thermal shutdown occurred and normal operation has resumed. This repeats ad infinitum. More frustratingly, the PC itself doesn't seem to be overheating at all, and in my experience it has gotten a lot hotter in the past without it ever thermally shutting down. Additionally, this thermal shutdown happened when I was trying to reformat the system entirely, preventing it from completing the process. I know I've probably missed some system info that you might want to know and I'll try my best to oblige when I can. Thanks for the help.

File Transfer - Help Wanted

It will be from the old computer running Windows XP to a new computer running Windows 7.

The old computer has files which I have accumulated over a number of years, it is a mixture of those used rarely, used frequently and junk.

The chances are some of the files will never be used again, but they just might be wanted at some future date. I am therefore reluctant to scrap anything. Neither do I want to put a lot of possibly unnecessary files on the new computer.

I need to be able to search the old hard drive and recover a file if it is wanted.

The old computer is about 9 years old and is slow and may not be worth upgrading.

I now have two computers and one monitor and I am not sure what would be the best route.

I have not used a Docking Station before but thought this could be a possibility, on Amazon I found:

DUAL 2.5"/3.5" IDE SATA HDD HARD DRIVE DOCK DOCKING STATION IDE SATA eSATA USB ALL IN 1
By DX-MALL

Any ideas would be a big help. Thanks.
