Icon symbol issue when checking “use this app for all .*

Q: Icon symbol issue when checking “use this app for all .*

Icon symbol issue when checking ?use this app for all .* files?,

Please, have a look on the screenshots which better explain my issue

I have *.loc file, and I wanted to open it once in Note Pad and then to get its symbol back to its initial state (no symbol for the file icon).

Unchecking the ?use this app for all ** files? never gets the icon back to its original state!

Is there a solution to get the icon back to its initial state (no symbol)?

Thank you

Preferred Solution: Icon symbol issue when checking “use this app for all .*

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

A: Icon symbol issue when checking “use this app for all .*

hello ,I think you need to make changes in file association ,just checking the use this app for all .loc files in your second last attachment will not do it as there isn't even another app in the list, to need to re-associate to app it belongs to ,and if my Googling is correct its belongs to a GPS program ,in the second last image it shows a more options link ,if you click that do you get you gps program in the list of programs to open the file

I have DL'd some freebie stuff for X-plane. [Aircraft - airports etc]
I have used a recommended installer to ensure correct file placement.
None of the new stuff will open in the program although it is itemised.
In WinExplorer each new file has a little lock symbol on the icon.

Can anyone explain this and how to deal with it?

I know that if you go under properties there are a lot of icons to choose from. I want a picture that I downloaded since I accidently deleted the .ico file in my download folder. It's a shortcut to a program. Of course I emptied the recycle bin!

A:How do I change the icon symbol/picture on desktop to my own jpg?

Redownload the picture you deleted, then go to one of the many websites which change jpegs to icon files. Put your icon in a place which is safe, then do the change icon procedure which you know about, choosing your icon file.

After opening the case of my Lenovo T440s I got the "Bottom cover tamper detection" error and it wants me to enter the BIOS password after pressing "ESC". What makes me curios is the icon of a person / man next to the lock icon. Its unlike the supervisor password lock icon I was used too.It isnt accepting my supervisor password so is this different icon meaning that I need to enter the user password or something? For clarification: I know its my fault when I dont remember the correct supervisor password and in fact the mainboard needs to be replaced. I just want to know whats that icon about. Thanks in advance!

hi, i think my computer has a quite serious problem, yesterday i tried to install a few programs n maybe one of them contains a virus, when i did the virus scanning, i found there's trojan virus there.
i cudn't open my c: or my documents, and almost all.

i tried to cleaned them up using my antivirus program (AVG 7.5, free ed)
and it works

after that, i tried to do another scanning, and the result shows that it has no viruses anymore,

fyi- before there was 8 file were infected, most of them are from system32

the new problem is, even though i can open all my drives like normal, but the icon of my drive c now has changed into a red cross symbol, as shown in the attachments, "screen"

and when i turn my laptop on, there's a box appears, shown in attachments, "error1"

can u please tell me what is going on with my laptop?
and what should i do?

thanks a lot.
waiting for ur reply

A:why does the icon of my computer (drive c) is changing to a red cross symbol?

Save HJTInstall.exe to your desktop.
Doubleclick on the HJTInstall.exe icon on your desktop.
By default it will install to C:\Program Files\Trend Micro\HijackThis .
Click on Install.
It will create a HijackThis icon on the desktop.
Once installed, it will launch Hijackthis.
Click on the Do a system scan and save a logfile button. It will scan and the log should open in notepad.
Click on "Edit > Select All" then click on "Edit > Copy" to copy the entire contents of the log.
Come back here to this thread and Paste the log in your next reply.
DO NOT have Hijackthis fix anything yet. Most of what it finds will be harmless or even required.

Dear Techguy support, I'm guilty for not ensuring my defenses were adequate on my son's laptop. There is currently a small sheild on the turn off icon whenever I attempt to turn off the laptop. I don't think it is suppose to be there. There is a note under it that tells me to click to install important updates and turn off my computer. Also, for some reason Internet Explorer icon is no longer on the desktop and I can't find it on the program list on the control panel. Not sure what happened. Hello, so this problem has happened to me before, and it's gone away before, but now it's back and it's staying for longer than it has previously. So the first thing I noticed is that in the bottom right on the toolbar, my network icon has the loading symbol around it. It doesn't go away unless I right click on it, in which case it shows that I'm not connected to a network. I can still open and run my browser, however pages like pandora or youtube don't load. Any program that connects online (such as games), and some that don't, refuses to open. I can't open Network and Sharing Center, or any page in Control Center for that matter. I also can't run any troubleshooters. I've tried restarting my computer in various safe modes including with command prompt, where I ran sfc /scannow. This brought up a message saying that some files were corrupted but could not be fixed. I also restored my computer to a previous time when my computer was working fine, and that fixed the problem until I restarted my computer the next day, when the problem returned. I know it's not my network that is the problem, my wifi works fine and I've double checked all the cables to my modem, router, and the Ethernet cable which I tried switching out. Sorry for such a long post and thank you to anyone who took the time to read it, also thanks in advance to anyone who can give me some advice.

Hi, I bought my Yoga 910 on may and its battery was charging normally until 3 days ago. Suddenly the charging symbol/icon in the screen start to oscillate between showing and not showing the plug - plugged and unplugged - every 2 seconds. The icon was blinking together with the charging led light (as the movie attached). I checked the cable for possible lose connection, but everything was in place.I checked also the battery on windows device manager, looking for some update, but everything was already up to date. The battery was not charging and now it is completely drained. Any help? Thanks,Paulo

I'm running WindowsXP Professional on a Dell Latitude D600, and I recently swapped out my laptop base unit, due to a failure with the prior unit. I successfully swapped over all the peripherals from my old laptop unit (screen, drives, Wi-Fi, battery, etc.) and the laptop started up normally, with no problems.

While not a problem, I just now noticed that on Windows Explorer, under [file] Name column, I see that for everyone of the files listed, there a very small "green checkmark" or a "yellow exclamation mark" in the lower right-hand corner of the symbol that designates the file type (Word, Excel, PDF, etc.). I've never seen that under Windows Explorer before, working this laptop - or any computer for that matter.

Anybody have an explanation for the mysterious symbols that have shown up, all of a sudden? Thanks.

Good Morning/Afternoon/Evening, I've been browsing the forums to get assistance on my own infection after Microsoft security essentials wasn't effective in removing the virus. I saw a posted solution to run AdwCleaner which I did then I disabled MSSE and ran the Junkware removal tool. The issue comes where it attempts to check the registries and it states the access denied.
I am the sole computer administrator but I'm not sure what I have to do to fix the issue. I searched through the forums but couldn't find the right topic to get the answer. I'm posting from my phone at the moment as I don't really want to use the internet since that's how the audio adware starts. My OS is windows XP service pack 2. I do recall installing service pack three. Any guidance would be overwhelmingly appreciated.

Ok, so my customer starting having BSOD's starting around 9/18. I finally was told that they were having BSOD's so they hadn't been writing down what error codes they had been receiving. I then tried to run malwarebytes which was already installed on the system. When I tried to run it, a BSOD would occur, I tried several times without success and kept getting the BSOD. Which lead me to think we had a virus issue.

When I came into the business, I decided to do a system restore back to before the BSOD's started to occur. I was able to restore back to 9/18 and then I was also able to finally run malwarebytes and it came up with no issues.

I also uninstalled Avast virus protection and installed Kaspersky IS 2010 to see if that would find anything. Nothing found. Ok. So I figured that just by setting back the registry to 9/18 everything was good. So I left and not but a day later BSOD's again.

So I've come back to fix the issue and tried doing a hijackthis, one line seems to show up that I can't seem to get rid of, not sure if it is a virus but I'm thinking that we don't have a virus but a hardware failure issue here.

I've taken out half the memory now and we've had another BSOD since I did that, so I'm eliminating the memory from the issue.

I updated all outdated drivers to newer drivers just in case that was one issue also and made a complete backup of the system.

The line in question on the hijackthis report was... Read more

I'm having an issue with using the error checking process with Windows XP Home edition.
The issue is this: When I go to "My Computer" clicking on asking it to run the error checking program - it then asks if I want the error checking program to run the next time that the OS starts. I click on yes and then proceed to restart the machine.
What I encounter next is VERY disturbing. When the machine attempts to restart I get a blank screen that provides no information as to why it is blank - nothing. (long story longer, I'm very disturbed about this situation.) Acting as if it has not found the root directory to boot my XP program.
When I attempt to go to the Safe Mode - it will not load the necessary drivers.
When I click on 'Return to most recent working configuration' it is a coin toss if this resolves the situation of the computer successfully booting. However once the machine decides to successfully reboot (using the Return to most recent working configuration' it then will continue to properly reboot (warm boot up, cold boot.) untill i decide I'm ready once again to attempt a error checking fiasco!
Which once again starts the same as it initially did not start. Last piece of the puzzle for one to consider that has more computer savvy than myself is that prior to this occurrence I used a program call 'Ultra Defrag" I'm hoping this is not the cause for the issue but can't think of anything else that may h... W7 Update issue
Current behaviour ?Checking for updates? runs for many hours without detecting any.
Troubleshooting steps taken,
I installed MS ?fix? KB 3135445,
Ran Fix WU Utility v 1.0 ( This utility will re-register a total of 114 .dll,* ocx and .ax files which are required for the proper functioning of Windows Updates. )
Cleared Windows Update Cache, following correct procedure.
Ran Windows update diagnostic.diagcab which detected issues, (see attch result 1 & result 2) which flagged an error RC_DataStore code 0X800F081F. I have tried researching this to no avail.
I then ran a repair utility from the reputable ?tweaking.com? the log attch ?Repair_Windows_Updates? which may reveal info to those wiser than me .
I also attch a list of current updates in the system the last being Net Framework 4.6.1.
The Dell laptop is clean of infections / malware and stable. Security essentials updates do run well. So I'm out of ideas now and welcome your input .

Heya, all.

A family member recently deleted the Documents folder from my Vista Ultimate (x86, SP2) user profile. I was able to undelete the folder, but now the pretty Vista Documents icon has reverted to an ugly "standard" yellow folder.

I've followed [these instructions] on how to restore the desktop.ini file, but the problem persists.

Complicating matters, the "Change icon" button on the Customize tab is missing.

This is a very minor issue, but it's driving me absolutely crazy. Any suggestions - short of a total reload (that's coming when I get Windows 7 in my Action Pack :D ) - to restore this icon?

I'm having an issue with the Dropbox icon on my desktop that is driving me crazy. After I upgraded to Windows 10 from 7 an icon appeared on my desktop along with the normal smaller icon in the notification area of the taskbar. The desktop icon, though is NOT just a shortcut, meaning it's the icon for the program itself and I can't delete it without deleting all my files. After several frustrating days of working with it, I decided I would just change the icon to match all the other steampunk icons on my desktop, which I did by going into the registry and pointing to another icon I've made. However, every time the computer restarts Dropbox writes over the custom icon with its own ugly blue one and I have to hack the registry again to change it back. None of the other PCs I have using Dropbox have had this icon show up on the desktop, and I cannot figure out how to get rid of it. Anyone have any ideas?

A:Desktop Icon Issue

Hello Bells, and welcome to Vista Forums.

It looks like your shortcut arrow overlay on the icons was messed up. You can use the Vista Shortcut Manager program in this tutorial to change the shortcut arrow back to the default arrow. Afterwards, you can change or remove the shortcut arrow with the same program if you like.

Hope this helps,

I have noticed recently that my icons for my Microsoft Office programs look like that in the image. The programs work fine though. Any ideas on how to fix this or at least attach a picture to them?

A:Icon Display Issue

Right click the Icon > Properties > Change Icon

Navigate to the MS Word program files, and choose the correct Icon.

Let me know how it works out,

Before when you got the update Icon you click on it, update and everything is fine. Recently I get the same icon after the update that tells me the update was successful and lists what has been installed. I have to click on it and close it to make it go away until the next time.

I can't find anyway to prevent this"Successful Update Notification" icon from showing up after an update.

never mind. I figured it out.

I attempted to use my laptop this morning with no avail. My keyboard will not respond, when clicking the icons on the home screen they open to the properties screen, and when I try to click on the control panel my computer doesn't repsond.
I tried to restart and the option flashes on the screen, but not long enough to actually click on it. I have shut down and started it back about four time this morning without any luck.

On my win 7sp1 64 bit OS's DESKTOP, if I put either a shortcut to a PDF file or the file itself, after about a week the icon will lose its color and be difficult to discern, but it still works as an icon.

If the PDF icon (shortcut to the file or file itself) is in a FOLDER on the DESKTOP (or folder anywhere else) this does not happen! Also, if I move the DESKTOP's discolored PDF Icon (shortcut or file itself) into any folder on the DESKTOP (or anywhere else) its color reappears. Then If I move it back to the DESKTOP the revived color stays with the shortcut icon (for about another week), but does not revive at all for the icon for the file itself!

This happens solely with PDF icons, no other program or file icons.
Does anyone have a clue as to what is happening. There is no maleware or viruses on my computer and all colors are set properly. Seems to be an issue between the OS and ACROBAT READER but I haven't a clue how to fix it

Acrobat reader on x64 systems has had problems with PDF icon previews in the past. I thought they had got it sorted now but maybe not. I personally use Foxit which is faster, has more facilities and doesn't have any icon problems.

I am having a problem with my desktop icons moving constantly. I have had this issue before and don't think I figured it out then. Thought I might ask the experts this time.
I am attaching 2 screenshots, one of how my desktop should look, and one of how it looks when the icons reset.

I have no idea why this is happenning. No malware or virus. Settings are correct.

Hope someone can help...

I am experimenting with different icons for certain apps and functions. However, although the icon in the properties dialogue updates, the icon in the taskbar does not. The only way I know of to see the changed icon is to restart the computer. This is annoying. Is there a way I can update/refresh/etc. the taskbar w/o restarting the computer in order to see the changed icons?

(fwiw, I am using one of Mark's custom themes)

Hello MourningStar,

You might see if restarting explorer instead may work. If you like, the tutorial below adds "restart explorer" to the desktop context menu to make it easier to use.

Explorer - Add "Restart Explorer" to Desktop Context Menu

Hope this helps.
