Lenovo Yoga 910 screen graphical glitching/flickering after BIOS update

Q: Lenovo Yoga 910 screen graphical glitching/flickering after BIOS update

Hey! Got myself a brand new Yoga 910 and installed the latest BIOS update to fix the fan noise issue: http://support.lenovo.com/se/sv/products/laptops-and-netbooks/yoga-series/yoga-910-13ikb/downloads/d... However, immediately after installing the update, the screen started having graphical glitching issues with artifacts flickering on the screen all the time. For example, if I'm on my desktop, I have the Trashcan and Spotify icon at the top of my desktop, and I will see "ghosts" of these icons flickering over the lower half of the screen. I tried updating the graphics driver to the latest version but it didn't help: http://support.lenovo.com/se/sv/products/laptops-and-netbooks/yoga-series/yoga-910-13ikb/downloads/D... The graphical artifacts that flicker on the screen seem to be based on what content I have on the screen currently. The computer was fine when I got it. My exact process has been: Getting the computer, everything is fineRunning Windows UpdateUsing the computer, everything is fineDownloading and installing latest BIOS updateNoticing flickering which never was there before the BIOS updateRestarting computerInstalling Intel DriverRestarting Computer But it's still flickering all the time. Needless to say this makes the laptop unusable.

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

My S1 Yoga, 20CD-00B1US, is stuck with the screen off and the power LED stuck on. When I try to push or hold the power button it beeps two short beeps and the LED stays solid. I was running the Lenovo Bios Update Software directly from their site. The power cord was plugged in and no other programs were running (aside from background programs). Now it is just stuck like this. Any thoughts or help would be great. I can't even get it to force shut off. Thank you in advance!

Hi there, First time poster, so apologies if I'm not 100% sticking to protocol here! The issue I'm having is one that has been posted about time and again on Lenovo Forums - the screen flickering/blackness of the Yoga 520 (I'm not sure if it's affecting other Yoga systems, too, but certainly the 520). I've had my laptop a couple of months, and from around 2 weeks I have been afflicted with this horrible issue. Essentially, the screen randomly starts flickering like crazy and going black sometimes. This makes the laptop completely unusable until such a time as the machine starts behaving itself again (this can take a longggg time). I have taken a video in case people don't understand the situation, and this doesn't even show the worst of it:https://www.dropbox.com/s/swa41r7u6g4ndot/20180214_173640%20%281%29.mp4?dl=0 When it starts flickering and going black, the system is almost entirely unusable. Sometimes I'm able to get use by scrolling down from the top of a webpage or zooming in. These methods occasionally sedate the screen flickering, but not always. I have tried pretty much every 'solution' that I have seen offered about this issue and have had no luck whatsoever. These include disabling and enabling the touchscreen and graphics drivers, uninstalling and reinstalling these drivers, resetting the whole system, cleaning all caches, doing a static discharge, searching for driver updates, adjusting the brightness, etc, etc. The list goes on and on..... For some reason my screen on my laptop spontaneously flickers and basically looks like it's having a seizure. I've tried updating the display driver and updating the system and neither worked. I've also tried the solution that requires you to go to safe mode to disable "Windows error reporting" and "Problems Report and Solutions" and it still hasn't stopped flickering. I bought the laptop about a month ago and the flickering started about a week/week and a half ago. I'd strongly prefer to fix it at home and I really don't want to have to return it to Best Buy to buy a different laptop. Any suggestions/solutions?

Hi Kaya,

Welcome to the Lenovo community!

This issue may occur due to several reasons. Let us start with opening Excel in safe mode. To do that, follow the steps below.

Hold the Windows key and press R, type excel /safe (note there is a space between excel and /).

If the application works fine safe mode, try disabling the add-ins for the application and check the result.
Click the File tab.
Go to Options.
Click Add-ins.
Clear all the options.
Hope this helps! Let us know how you get on.

Hello everyone, I bought a Lenovo YOGA 500 15 15ISK  only a few days ago and today I had finally the time to unbox it and turn it on.I have to say I was quite impressed with the design and how light the laptop is. However, my good impressions pretty much stopped there. Upon loging in windows (laptop comes with Windows 10 preinstalled) I came across a painful screen flickering and a problematic mouse pointer movement (both with the mouse and touchpad). When I carried out an initial google search I was shocked with the number of people that had similar problems to mine, literally thousands!I have a good day trying to sort out the screen flickering (I have fixed the mouse pointer movement) and eventhough I found a couple of suggestions and solutions that initially worked, the problem returned after a few minutes. Furthermore, when I was browsing a webpage and then moved on to a new one I could see an imprint of the previous page, as if the previous letters were imprinted on the monitor. I have also experienced 4 times in about 6 hours a lovely black screen (dark grey actually) where the only option was to switch the power off after a few minutes in order to manage to get the screen to work again. My first comment is that I find it discraceful that a company sells a product in such state, especially since the problem is well documented by thousands of user. As far as I am concerned, and the law dictates, a new product has to be in full working order and work to... Read more

How did you fix the mouse problem!? I bought the same computer and had these same problems.  I found the display driver issue online (screen flickering, seems to be be avoided if using Chrome instead of Edge or Firefox).  That was annoying but the biggest problem was the mouse.  With the trackpad or an external mouse (with updated drivers or rolling back) the issue persisted.  The problem can be described as the mouse not moving in a fluid motion, constantly getting stuck for just a small period, appearing jumpy or sticky.  It was incredibly frustrating.  I returned the laptop assuming it was defective, however the replacement unit had the same problem.  The problem only started after the computer performed its first Windows Update.  So I removed the security update (Windows wouldn't let me remove all the other updates), and the problem vanished.  However, a day later it did more updates and the problem was back.  Since I couldn't find documentation online, I wasn't aware if a fix was even being planned.  For a brand new laptop, it was pretty appaling.  It's a shame, because I like my old Lenovo laptop. On a side note - there are related problems with the Surface Pro 4 and Surface Book, so it might just be an Intel Graphics HD 520 / i5-6200U problem.  But at this point, I don't want a Lenovo OR any other laptop with that processor...

Use the NOVO button to boot into the BIOS screens. See if it continues to happen there. If it's stable in the BIOS screens, it's a driver. If it still flickers in the BIOS screens, it's hardware.

That periodical 5 - 30 seconds black flickering screen has tormented me on my Y2P ever since I upgraded to Windows 10. Just today in a Yoga 2 Pro tips discussion I read that the solution may be to disable Panel Self-Refresh in the Intel HD Graphics Control Panel (Power -> On Battery). Hi there, I bought a Lenovo Yoga 910, Intel Core i5, 8GB RAM, 256GB SSD 4K laptop in September 2017. I've had no major issues with it until the past few days. What is happening is that when I'm watching a video, on seemingly any player, after a while the screen starts going crazy, it's fairly hard to describe so I'll link a video to it. https://sendvid.com/eoi9k12k Once that starts to happen, any time I mouse over anything the screen flickers, and anytime I open anything (e.g. an internet tab/the start menu) it goes back to the original freak out style. If I manage to minimise everything and sit on the home screen with the mouse not touching any icons then the screen is fine.  I feel like there was an update fairly recent prior to this starting, so whether that is the cause or not I'm not sure. I'm a standard computer user, so for information that is required I'll likely need pointing out how exactly I go about finding said information or performing said task if it's not pretty basic.  Thanks in advance for any advice.

I just purchased my laptop about a month ago and when in normal use starting from log in the screen starts to flicker constantly and the screen would also black out here and there. When I boot it in safe mode everything runs fine and the screen doesn't flicker or black out so I'm guessing that it's a graphic driver issue and not a hardware?  I've updated everything in Windows 10.. the drivers are also all updated (Intel HD Graphic 620 and Nvidia Geforce 940MX). I've also tried uninstalling all the drivers and reinstalling them. I've disabled Problem Reports and Solution Control Panel Support & Windows Error Report Service from services in Task Manager. I've tried everything you can think of but can't find a solution!!! My screen has been flickering and glitching up for about two months now. It is getting progressively worse.  I think it is overheating, even though I'm using a laptop cooling board for airflow. This YouTube video demonstrates the same issue I'm having, except mine is more severe.  Is my computer dying? I  just bought it in Feb 2016. One of my hinges is also coming loose.  Additionally, I noticed my Spectre screen has a small crack in it as of today. I haven't dropped it or stepped on it or anything. I have been extremely careful, as this is by far the most expensive computer I've ever owned. Anyway, now the touch screen doesn't work on the side with the crack.  A lot of people are having the same issue (http://h30434.www3.hp.com/t5/Notebook-Video-Display-and-Touch/cracked-screen-on-spectre-x360/td-p/51...). Is this covered under warranty? If not, how much would it cost to repair and how long does it usually take.

December of 2016 I purchased a Lenovo for the first time in my life as a Christmas present to myself, having some bit of doubt I went out on a limb because it was a sale at Costco.   It was about February of 2017 that I first began to experience a disruptive flickering in the screen when I moved my laptop from one surface to another. In March 2017 the problem began to make the system barely usable. Requiring me to shut the screen and reopen it to get it working again. Sometimes that would work and I had to perform a hard shutdown. I contacted Lenovo support around this time to see about getting it repaired, the only options were to send it in or drop it off at best buy for repair. My preference was to send it in to Lenovo for repair, thinking that their repair facility would be better equipped.  Unfortunately this was the same week I was heading back to The Netherlands for 7 weeks and this laptop was the only way I could skype back and forth with my kids while away. I opted to deal with the problem as frustrating as it was. Flash forward to November 2017, I finally got around to being able to send it to Lenovo. I travel often and for the reasons above would rather have had an intermitting system than nothing at all however in after returning from over a month in Brazil, I was completely fed up! I finally was able to commit to backing up all my data and sending it off.   I received my laptop back in late November 207 just in time for my next ... Read more

Hello, I contacted a local Lenovo service center in Nigeria where I am and was told by the company that they were unable to order the parts necessary to switch my screen from the company even though I am still covered by 7 more months my warranty for more than. This is unfair as I recently got my laptop (purchased, 28th Septemeber at a Best Buy in Houston while I was visiting for GHC) but I have been unable to use it in peace since I bought it because the screen started flickering almost immediately after. I took it to an authorised Lenovo service center where they confirmed that the screen does have issues that are not software related. They were, however, unable to get it from you guys. I need to use it for school and am already behind on so much because my laptop screen is giving me a hard time. I have the receipt that proves I bought it legitimately and even will provide you other details you might need to prove its purchase.  Please send me the parts I need? I need this screen fixed and it's unfair that I should have to spend $200 on a new screen when I should be getting it fixed for free. I don't mind handling how it gets shipped here but I need my screen fixed. PLEASE.  Buying this Lenovo has brought me nothing but headaches and I regret this decision.

Back in September, I purchased a Y700-15ISK laptop, and up until about ten days ago I had no problems with it whatsoever. However, that changed when the screen started flickering intermittently. Initially, I wasn't too concerned, but when I turned my laptop on the following day, the problem became a lot more extreme. On this occassion, the screen flickered so wildly during the boot-up process, that I had great difficulty logging in. It was only after I'd rebooted my laptop several times, that it became stable enough to use normally. Over the next few days, the flickering became less frequent, but instead I started experiencing graphical glitching in the form of jagged little white lines which seemed to be triggered mainly by dark colours. Since then, I've had another awful session where the flickering has made my laptop unusable, and a couple more sessions where I've mainly been affected by the glitching. I regularly experience the glitching whilst the Lenovo logo is displayed during the boot-up process, and when I access the BIOS, so I assume I'm dealing with a hardware problem as opposed to a Windows 10 problem. Nevertheless, I did update my drivers, but this made no difference. The one thing I haven't tried is updating my BIOS. I'm still on CDCN28WW, but I'm aware that the latest version is CDCN52WW. The reason I'm hesitant to update is because the problems are usually at their worst when I boot-up or reboot ... Read more

(other topics similar to this are not pertinent to this situation) My suspicion is that it is triggered by soft ware - BIOS, but I can't quite roll that back. I would appreciate any help.

This is not a question, but really a suggestion to all of you who are about to update your BIOS. Lenovo released a new BIOS version for Lenovo Yoga 720 15 inches (BIOS Update - 10 [64] - V.4MCN24WW. This update brought back fan noise and frequently operation like it was before the BIOS update (BIOS Update - 10 [64] - V.4CN23W).  So the 24th version of the update is running fans as loud as the 22nd version. No good. If you know how to fix this problem then please let me know. Please do not update your BIOS because it brings back loud fan noise. I am hoping the fan issue thing will be fixed. The reason I did not want to purchase Lenovo Yoga model because they have been notoriously known for fan noise. The problem that was fixed with the 23 version of the BIOS update seems to be back with the 24 version.

Hi, this is a problem that has began in the last week

Basically I have an issue where the monitor on my laptop goes completely nuts. Often screen fragments and shows different tabs, or desktop icons appearing over the top of tabs that are open. Other times large parts of the screen go black or white. The charge/sound/internet icons may appear at the top instead of the bottom of the screen. Displays that shouldn't be visible unless the start menu or control bar are open can be seen.

Here are some pictures of the most recent episode of glitching: http://imgur.com/a/GgXKs

When this happens I can't click on anything to open new programmes/tabs. If I try to open things using the keyboard (like task manager or start menu) then the glitching gets worse and the screen goes black and white. I have no option but to switch the laptop off at the power button.

This happens episodically and seemingly is completely random. I can use my computer for hours before it begins to glitch. I have no idea what brings it on, or why it began to do this now. As such I don't know where to even begin looking for problems. I'm not even sure if this is a hardware or software problem. The only thing I could think to do was to scan for viruses and Avast couldn't find any problems.

I'll provide any details you think are important. I am using Windows 8 and a HP Envy dv7 laptop.

If someone could at least point me in the right direction that would be great.

Thanks,

Nothing helps, even rolling back to the earlier driver. It's a common problem with Creators update. Does Lenovo have answer for this issue?

Issue: Glitching & freezing BIOS screen.

The BIOS screen freezes when navigating through the settings and the mouse creates a lasting ?ghost? in its wake. The screen is steady on the loading screens and while running windows, it?s just the BIOS screen that does this. I am having issues installing the drivers and so on but that should all just be software problems while surely the BIOS issue must be hardware related.

It was all put together professionally except the SSD. I?m quite sure I?ve installed this correctly though as I have the OS installed on the SSD and it?s working fine.

I?m currently liaising with the company who put it together to find a resolution to the issue, but any advice would be much appreciated as they seem to be of the opinion that the issue is to do with the drivers while the greater internet community says it?s a GPU problem. I think the only other pertinent thing to mention is that the GPU is actually powering the display, only the pc isn?t recognising it (can?t tell if it?s not recognised in the BIOS because I can?t get much farther than the initial screen) which I presume is down to a lack of drivers.

I was wondering if it could potentially also be... Read more

Hi There, Sorry if this has been posted before but struggling to find. My laptop is around 9 months old and recently the screen has started displaying quickly flickering green dots across the whole screen. The green dots are visibile from boot when the lenovo logo is displayed and are particularly apparent on a green screen. In addition frequently the screen will go completely black with no dots and nothing displayed. These green dots are not displayed when using an external monitor. Obviously pretty frustrating as it is hit and miss whether I can use the pc ina mobile environement. Generally the black screen is temporarily resolved by restarting the laptop, although the flickering green dots are still visible upon restart. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Try updating the graphics driver first: http://support.lenovo.com/us/en/products/Laptops-and-netbooks/Yoga-Series/yoga-900-13isk/downloads/D...If that doesn't work, it seems to be a hardware issue (either the display cable that goes through the hinge or the display itself). Contact Lenovo support, they should sort it out for you. Visit http://support.lenovo.com/us/en/ for support contact options.

I have been suffering the, what seems common, screen flicker issue with my yoga 500 when on battery. After reading through some threads i discovered the problem was either, Drivers or Bios. After trying both drivers from lenovo themselves, and the latest from intel/nvidia the problem still remained.i then tried updating the bios. After windows shut down, the Phoenix bios updater stated a message that the bios had been sucessfully updated. The laptop then restarted and no longer posts or goes into windows. The Nova button also has no function and just causes the keyboard to illuminate and the fan to spins for 10 seconds before stopping.(Same as power button)Any advice?

Hi all, I just updated the BIOS (Initiated from Win10), after restart nothing than a black screen and the keyboard lighting up for a second. (Thinkpad Yoga, P40)  I tried to hard reset it (power button shutdown), again in combination with Shift-F8, drained the battery and tried again. But still dead as a dodo. Some ideas before I start the whole support procedure at Lenovo?  Many thanks in advance!

Hello, Today I receaved my Thinkpad X1 Yoga 20JE and after I did a BIOS update the Yoga had a black screen. I followed the instructions of the BIOS update and the battery was fully loaded and the Yoga was connected to the power. Now the screen is black and the LED in the power button is blinking green. The yoga is warm on the backside so it must be running. But I can't restart when I longpress the power button and the battery is inside so i can't put it out.I also installed some other drivers with the Lenovo update tool and maybe windows did also update.what could I do to make everything running again? Did I brick the BIOS?

So, when you press and hold the power button, it doesn't shut off?  It is a new machine, almost certainly with a warranty.  Don't mess with it.  Call support
