Error caused excel file to file in Use and read-only

Q: Error caused excel file to file in Use and read-only

I've got Excel 2000. (Win98)
The PC froze / hung-up while in excel. Could only power off to restart.
Now when you access the file you get a message that the "file is in use" and can only be opened in read only mode.

"When you open a file that is in use, you'll get a message that tells you the file must be opened in read-only mode. In some cases, you may get this message even though the file is definitely not in use. This can be caused by an Excel crash, in which the file was not released."

The file was being accessed on another PC via a basic household network.
Our work around at present was to access the file in Read-only mode and save it as a new file. The old file still exists. I can't delete it as I get the same file in use message.

But, I'm still working on the older file to see if I can unlock it some how.
Tried the following:
1) Check/deleted temp files on the editing PC.
2) Checked the file attributes on the file (Note: the file did not have the "Read-only" attribute ticked)
3) Now checking the source PC for temp files.

Any direction greatly appreciated.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

A: Error caused excel file to file in Use and read-only

Save yourself some time.
Open the old file.
Right-click a sheet tab and hit Select all sheets.
Right-click again and hit Move or Copy.
Choose the create a copy box, and from the dropdown, choose New book.
Save the new book. Make sure all is well. Delete the old book.

In SAP portal we are running reports.
With IE8 we export a report to excel and then change the layout of the report and export the same report again. Every time we export the report to excel we get the another version of the filename. The first time ReportBudger is made and then ReportBudget
(1), ReportBudget (2) and so on.
We have upgraded to IE11. But now with IE11 the version of the files are not consequently incremented. So we get the errors: "File with the same name already exists" and "Unable to read file".
With Firefox it works also properly. We do not have that problem.

In Excel 2010, I opened a Read-only file, made a lot of changes, and tried to File-Save As.

Nothing happens.

A web-search I got some info, maybe the MS Office update tool was recently installed? Not in my case.

go to explorer, the read-only file and check off Read-only in Properties. Can't, its not saved to anything, and Excel gives a message the file is read-only, please save under a new file name.

I tried File Save As, but nothing happens, no dialog box to input a new file name.

BTW, this is a large excel file, around 27 MB.

A:Excel file read-only, but can't File-Save as

Offhand, wondering if the Save As dialog box is opening behind the Excel program window. Maybe reducing the size of the excel window, then trying save as again? (it may be visible if that is happening) Also a possibility is to just try Save. That should produce a message and also offer the opportunity to Save As. Any additional info you can acquire will be helpful for resolving this.

While in excel, I would like to open another excel file and read some information.

The file I am reading from, will have a row with "Avg." in Col A with data in Col B through L in that row that I want to extract. The data line will be in a different place in all excel files and there may be 2 lines to read.

At this time, I have used the Open command successfully to find the file but do not know how to proceed (?the open structure may be wrong?).

I am familiar with loops and variables but can can not figure out the rest unique to excel.

Any help would be appreciated.

This is my first time posting here... first time I can't figure something out myself, here it goes:

So starting off I decided to upgrade from SP1 to SP2. I have an 80GB hard drive as my C drive and a Samsung SP1614N 160GB drive as my F drive where I keep most of my mp3s and videos, no installed programs just media files mostly. So when I installed to SP2 everything seemed to work fine except when I opened up any mp3 or video on my F drive the file would open but the media was garbled. It was more garbled with the video with alot of green pixels and messed up audio. When the mp3s played they would get alot of clicks and hisses and stuff meaning that there is some data that must be missing. The weird part is that small files like txt documents would open just fine. Exe files on that drive would not work at all. When I copied a video from the C drive to the F drive then it would automatically become garbled. When I copied a video from F to C then it wouldn't be as garbled but still some data loss.

But I found that the data wasn't really "corrupted" because I did a system restore back to the point before I installed SP2 and all the media was there and worked just fine. Sounds like some sort of read error where it can't read all the data off of the disk? I'm not too sure what this problem might be. I found a website where someone had sort of the same problem as me. The link is here: http://graphics.stanford.edu/~mcammara/sp2woes.html

A:Read only file -EXCEL

All recipients are losers.

Not really.
But SOME people DON'T understand SOME things.

For one, if you're sending the file as a zip file, they could be opening the Excel file within the zip file and not extracting it first.

For another, they could be opening the file directly through the email message and expecting to be able to then save it.

For another, make sure you're SAVING your file before sending it. (Less likely of an issue.)

Next time they complain, I'd find out if they're inside their email message or not. You can ask them to hit File-Save as. If the folder is one they don't recognize, then it could be, for instance, Outlook's message store folders.

Have you tried forwarding their email messages (from your sent items) to yourself to see if you get the same problem? If you're not, likely it's the recipient at the other end.

The total number of nurses at the side is read from another excel file called 'Input file for # of nurses'

Now the problem is that if clear a schedule then the number of nurses used is not getting updated at the side.....if I clear a schedule then the number of nurses at the side should also get updated....for example(If I create a schedule with 3 nurses and if only a total of 3 nurses are available then..... the used number of nurses for that specific time at the side will get updated to 3 from 0 and if I clear that schedule then the used nurses for that time should again become 0)....

The other problem is that if I schedule a surgery then all details of the surgery will be saved in another excel sheet called 'input file for patient details' so if I clear a schedule then all the details of that surgery saved in that excel sheet should also be cleared......

I'm hoping someone with a fair understanding of Excel and VBA can give me a hand here

I don't really use Excel much, even less the VBA side of things (more web type things).

Here is the problem, I receive a file of tabulated data in Word format which I need in Excel, with the data in the correct cells. Currently someone is transcribing this manually which is taking about a week every month

It is a fixed file format (columns always start in the same place) so can be saved as a txt file, but being fixed format there is no delimiter so Excel dosen't know what to do with it and just sticks the whole thing in cell A,1.

I have read that there is a funtion workbooks.opentext which might be able to help but i'm unsure of the parameters and how to implement this

I'm using Excel 2000 with the built-in VBA 6 (I think).

A:Can't read an Excel 2007 file on one computer

Have you determined whether it is just a specific Excel 2007 file that won't display data on this machine ... or if other Excel 2007 files also won't display? That test should reveal whether the problem is with the file on this machine ... or with Excel on this machine.

If it is just this file ... how is the program accessing the file (over a network? or from the machine's hard-drive?). If the file is located on the machine's hard-drive ... perhaps it was corrupted when imported ... and you might want to try re-importing the file from a machine on which there is currently a working version?

I've got a small Excel file I've tried to save to a diskette, but, after the one time out of many tries it finally did write it, it won't read when I try to look at it, gives me an error message, So, I saved it to a CD-RW, everything went okay, I can read it, but now when I want to update it, it says "Cannot save the file xxxxxx. The file exists and is marked read only. Save the file with another file name or another location." And a couple of times it told me I did not have rights to access this file. I'm the only one on this computer, and I'm listed as the administrator, so I don't understand that either.

All I want to do is overwrite the file to update it every now and then. But I can't. I've always been able to do this on a diskette, but can't even do that now. Is it not possible to do this on a CD-RW? I don't want to write a new file every couple of days. The diskette would be fine if I could get it to work. Can anybody give me some advice?

I'm just using what came on XP Home to burn disc's and always have, because I don't do any music coping and this has always worked fine up until now. Just did a reformat of my computer about three weeks ago, but I can't see why that would be a problem, I put it back just as it was to begin with.

Thanks in advance for any help. And if this info is to be found somewhere else here at TS, I couldn't find it.

A:Cannot save Excel file, marked read only

If you leave the disc open, you can overwrite files as long as the disc is a -RW disc and not a standard -R disc. Honestly I've had bad experiences with -RW and leaving discs open. That was ages ago and CD-Rs are so cheap now. O've been told that OfficeXP doesn't like floppy discs. I have no proof of this. I haven't used a floppy in quite some time either.

Excel is my weakest area of office programs so I was wondering if anyone can tell me if this is possible and possibly offer any advice on how to implement it.

I have a spreadsheet with a list of names and dates and what that person is doing on each day. I also have a text file of whenever each person is away, which I export from a calendar. What I want to do is have excel read the text file and write to the correct cell based on what the text file says.

Example text file
Tom - Holiday 13/07/2010 14/07/2010
Harry out 14/08/2010 16/08/2010

Attached is an example spreadsheet.

So based on this text file I would want to fill in cell C3 with "Holiday" (the second date is the first return date) and cell D5 and E5 with "out"

Is this possible to do?

I converted a large addin from excel 2003 using DAO to access several workbooks.

Now using excel 2013.

The addin works in both Update and read-only modes. A 2nd user logging on will open the workbooks in read only mode automatically.

The conversion to 2013 went well but DAO will not work when the workbooks are opened in read-only mode. I get the error "external table is not in the expected format".

The exact same code works fine when the workbooks are opened in update mode.

Very puzzling - can anybody help?

I am really frustrated as I have a lot of users depending on the outcome. They have to continue using 2003 for the moment.

The line in the code that fails is ...

Hi everybody

I need help for reading data from text files and saving it under different columns in the excel file using vba macro.

For example: I have many text files in the following format

File 1:
1 2 3 4
1 3 5 7
1 3 1 8

File 2:
1 2 3 4
1 3 5 7
1 3 1 8

In excel file the above files should be saved one below the other seperated by the name of the text file, in seperate coumns as found in the text file.

I found an example online but it saves the data under a single column only. I tried changing it to my requirement, but I couldn't. I have attached the example that I found online.

I have a Windows 2003 server R2 Sp1 and XP SP2 workstations with Office 2000. Occasionally 2 users are able to access the same excel 2000 spreadsheet at the same time without receiving a file open notice until the second user tries to save the file. Then they receive a message stating that the file is in use and that they can do a save as. Usually if a user tries to access a file that is already in use, they receive a file in use popup and they are given the choice to open read only, notify or close. This issue does not happen all the time and is not specific to one particular file. And the file was never setup for sharing. I've checked my security and permissions for the shares and I don't see a solution. I've suspected file corruption and copied the data into a new file and replaced the old file thinking that would solve the problem and no luck. Is there something I'm missing?

I have been using this same Excel file for many years. I viewed on my new home laptop 2 days ago, using a 2010 Excel Version. It was created on 2007.

I opened it on my work computer, version 2003, and now get the above error message on both machines. The file can no longer be opened.

I have tried emailing it, still won't open.

I have chenged the file type to both .xls and .xlxs neither open.

I downloaded the program on the home page of this site, and it said no file issues, no known problems for this file.

When I click Open File, it still shows where I had the file opened (the file name in lighter gray font - but cannot open.) The original file is in black, and I can open. But, get that message.

I also tried to open and fix - and I tried both options, with formulas, and without formulas, and all it opened was foreign characters.

Any other suggestions? Or is this file gone? Unfortunately, my most recent back up is 3-4 months old...

Hi there,

I am trying to use SQL.REQUEST to pull data from one excel file (a master data file) to another one, and I can't get it to work. I think I don't have the correct connection string specified.

I'm using Excel 2002 on Windows 2000.

The task is, I need to build dynamic queries based on other cells in the "output" spreadsheet, such as, get a count of all records in the master file where the date field is equal to [cell reference] and the ID field is equal to [another cell reference] and a third field is equal to [third cell reference]...
So that, if the values in those referenced cells change, the records that match (and get counted up) will be different.
Also, there will be at least 10 different queries (I do a sum on a field that is a time duration, an average on that same field in another, etc) in different places on the spreadsheet.

I was able to get a simple query to work in Microsoft Query if I used static values, ie, I typed them directly into the criteria... however, these need to by dynamic so that when the same spreadsheet (a report template) is "saved-as" and new values for the criteria are input, the queries don't have to be re-created.

So, using MS Query, I can connect to the master data file and get the correct result... but I believe what I really need to use is SQL.REQUEST, so I downloaded the ODBC add-in and installed that.
I just can't seem to figure out what my connection string argument needs to be.

at about the same time, my boyfriend finally took a look at it, and he came up with this result: http://www.devlist.com/ConnectionStringsPage.aspx

I used the syntax in this example
Provider=Microsoft.Jet.OLEDB.4.0;Data Source=C:\MyExcel.xls;Extended Properties="Excel 8.0;HDR=Yes;IMEX=1";
(I almost got up and danced, I was so happy)

Just thought I'd come back and post the solution, in case anyone else ends up finding this thread in the same position I was in.

Now how do I mark this thing solved?

I was on an OptiPlex 330 running XP sp3. It was using IE7 as its default browser. I attempted at upgrading it to IE8. I installed the correct drivers for the network adapter but then was getting a Code 39(cant start hardware, driver might be corrupt). I reinstalled the drivers countless times before doing more digging.
I found that the NDIS.sys file was missing from the system32 folder. I attempted to copy this file from a working machine to this OptiPlex. I restarted the machine and got the BSOD. Restarted a couple more times and now I'm getting the Black/Blank screen of death. When booting in safe mode, it freezes at the ISAPNP.sys driver. I've booted from CD and did a Repair Installation with no luck. I went into the Recovery Console and run CHKDSK which didn't help any.

This has to be somehow connected to that NDIS.sys file...

I am concerned about running FIXMBR or FIXBOOT, i don't want any data to be lost if at all possible.

I installed a Sony Ericsson MD300 wireless modem successfully on my Vista machine but on my desktop XP, the "Wireless Manager" installs fine but an error message is sent when trying to read (and install) the modem initialization files--- i.e. cannot read setup initialization files... very frustrating and tech support is useless.

The result is that the modem appears invisible/absent to the "Wireless Manager" program.

Problem: A while ago I emptied the recycle bin. After emptying, a folder remained that had 4-5 files in it. I don't recall exactly what the files were.

I tried to delete the folder, and got the message in the title.

No problem I thought, and I got out a handy file shredder and shredded that file to pieces. It was gone.

Except it's not. When I use CCleaner or other aps to clean my system, the "cannot delete file:..." message in the title pops up.

If I go to the recycle bin and empty it, I get the message. When I look in the recycle bin, it is empty, but if I tell it to empty itself I get the message.

So the folder is in the recycle bin, invisible. It was "shredded", but still remains.

I have entered safe mode, but is still get the message when I try to empty the recycle bin or use CCleaner.

I have read things that reference deleting the entire recycle bin (which then recreates itself), but am not clear on this or if it is a good idea.

My system runs fine, it's just an annoyance.

Any ideas from the experts here (you solved a big virus issue I had a while ago, and this is nothing in comparision, but hopefully somebody has seen this issue before...)

When I use the XCopy command in Windows 2000, I can copy any file I like; however, when I use copy-and-paste or drag-and-drop in either Windows Explorer or PowerDesk, I get the following error:

Cannot Copy File: Cannot Read from the Source File or Disk

I searched the Microsoft Knowledge Base and came up with only one article, Q224378. This article seems not to apply to my situation because it applies to Windows 2000 Server. I am running Windows 2000 Professional with Service Pack 2. I did attempt to install the fix that article Q224378 suggested anyway; but, I got an error message that I was attempting to upgrade a program that didn't exist on my system.

I have also learned that this error applies when copying from either of my SCSI CD-ROM drives, not when copying from hard disks or floppies.

Any Suggestions?

If the image files you're unable to open were obtained via download to a folder name that includes certain special characters (for example, the symbols seen in "【Pictures】") this creates a file path that, although acceptable to the operating system, is not recognized properly by IrfanView (or other apps), yielding the somewhat misleading "Can't Read File Header, Unknown file format" message (should really say "File Not Found"). Simple solution is to rename the download folder, or move the image files to another directory with a name that's recognized properly by IrfanView. Hope this helps some who are encountering this confusing error!

Hi friends,

Suddenly one files has appeared on my desktop which i am struggling to delete. On each action it gives me same error i.e. Cannot delete file: Cannot read from the source file or disk.

If if try to cut/move the file it shows - Cannot move file: Cannot read from the source file or disk.

I have performed following troubleshooting steps
1) CHKDSK on my C: drive, but no luck.
2) Windows repair 'chkdsk /r' but file still exists.

Please help me a way to get rid out of this issue.

System suddenly shut down whilst online. When re-started said system recovered from serious error.

I have located the .dmp file, but have no idea what to do with it. Incidentally, it was not where I expected to find it. It was in C:\Windows\Minidump and I have yet to find where the sysdata.xml is located!!

I have only just (literally less than a week) recovered from a complete hardware meltdown of my laptop.
I have just transferred everything onto an old one and now this! Panicking to say the least.

A:Serious System Error BSOD - Read .dmp file

The minidumps did not load correctly but,
Probably caused by : tcpip.sys
First thing to check - update, are the network card and maybe the wireless drivers.
Check Event Viewer.

Check under Applications and System.
For Errors - not information or warnings.

Under both Application and System - look for Errors.
Double-click each error one at a time - then click on the icon that looks like two pieces of paper.
These will be saved in the Clipboard.
The Clipboard can be hard to find.

Start > Run > Type

In Clipboard.
Click on File top toolbar > Save As.
Save to Notepad
Copy and paste the errors into notepad - then paste them here.
Device Manager
Click the + sign to expand all entries.
Check for exclamation marks.
If a driver is needed - always go to the manufacturers website.
Antivirus: PC Cleaner Pro - not the best Anti-virus to use and has been known to cause problems.

Hi All

I have an interesting problem that I would really appreciate assistance solving.
I have the following simple code in a VBA Excel module:

Set BookResults = Workbooks.Open("C:\MVAA\trial.xls")

This code always used to work fine no problems in Office 2007. Then all of a sudden I started occasionally getting an error "Error 1004 - unable to read file"

A few days ago I upgraded to Office 2010. Now every time I run this code the first time it works fine...but then if I try and run it again I get the same error! The only way around this is to restart my PC!

I am really scratching my head about this one

Any ideas?

Thanks a lot
